Covid-19 stings travel and tourism sector news

Not all is lost for 2020, but toll will be substantial, industry representatives say

Kevin Kelly was in Nunavut during the painful 2008-09 recession, but the immediate damage wrought by Covid-19 has been more disastrous for Nunavut's travel and tourism industry, he says.

"I'd definitely say that this is worse," says Kelly, CEO of Travel Nunavut, a non-profit membership association consisting of 140 businesses.

"Our hotel is basically empty of short-term guests ... that doesn't cover the bills," says Alariaq, who has run Huit Huit Tours and has expanded tourism offerings with her husband Timmun since 1989.

"All the tours are cancelled for the summer ... I don't know how long it will last."

In Nunavut's smaller communities, Kelly says Co-op hotels are "pretty much shutdown" due to a

75 per cent of businesses in Nunavut travel and tourism sector indicated that they may have to shut down during the second quarter and 13 per cent reported that they may have to close their doors permanently.

Nearly a quarter of travel-related businesses saw a decrease of more than 50 per cent in sales revenue during the first three months of 2020 compared to a year earlier.

Close to 40 per cent of businesses realized a 25 per cent decline in revenue during the first quarter of 2020.

41 per cent of Travel Nunavut's members laid off some employees while another third reduced work hours during the first three months of this year. The Nunavut travel industry provided income for approximately 3,000 people in 2019.

In the upcoming three months, 61 per cent of business operators say they're anticipating lay offs and 43 per cent foresee a risk of being unable to pay wages to staff.

Three-quarters of Nunavut industry members stated that they will require government assistance to continue or to restart commerce after the crisis from the coronavirus has passed.

The hits started coming in March when Transport Canada put a stop to the summer cruise ship season in the Arctic for 2020.

Kelly and Alariaq agree that the remainder of 2020 could be partly salvaged when the threat of the pandemic has passed and government is able to scale up operations.

Business travellers comprise a significant portion of airfare bookings, stays at hotels, meals at restaurants and purchases of local artwork.

"It all depends on what happens with the travel restrictions," says Kelly. "Our hope is that government and people go back to work and some possibly some community travel happens ... if business travel starts picking up again, there's an opportunity for the tourism industry to move forward."

Kelly says the amount of financial aid needed to assist Nunavut's $300-million travel and tourism sector can't yet be quantified due to the unknown factors lying ahead. However, a fraction of businesses in the territory have indicated that they are facing permanent closure, he notes.

Alariaq says she looked at applying for the Government of Nunavut's $5,000 support grant but it's only available to businesses with income under $500,000. Federal aid in the form of wage subsidies also isn't going to help because it's geared towards workers in place before Covid-19 struck, not the hiring of seasonal staff.

One thing Nunavummiut can do to assist the industry, Kelly suggests, is to dine locally and travel within the territory once some semblance of normalcy returns.

"That's how the industry is going

On April 7, Patterson had signed a medical directive to expand testing to anyone, who exhibits symptoms consistent with Covid-19, whether they were mild or severe.

'Can't believe my baby's gone' Kugluktuk man calls for change after son dies in Yellowknife hotel while in self-isolation

A heartbroken father from Kugluktuk wants the Government of Nunavut to rethink its self-isolation orders after his infant son died recently while the two were quarantined at a Yellowknife hotel.

Jason Agligoetok's son Jackson began treatment at Stanton Territorial Hospital for medical issues in early March. A month-long hospital stay followed.

Agligoetok and his son were directed to self-isolate for two weeks at Yellowknife's Explorer Hotel when Jackson was discharged from the hospital, he said on April 15.

As per Nunavut's Covid-19 orders, travellers coming back into the territory must first self-isolate for two weeks at one of four designated city centres – Yellowknife, Edmonton, Winnipeg or Ottawa – before returning home.

About halfway through the mandatory isolation at the downtown hotel, Agligoetok said he put his son to bed. When he awoke, his son was unconscious.

CBC North first reported on the death earlier this week. The broadcaster reported Agligoetok wished the Nunavut government would have let him and his son come home immediately after being discharged from the hospital, instead of having them self-isolate in the capital.

He expanded on the comments to Nunavut News.

"It would be fair enough to not go through isolation before we came home," said Agligoetok.

In general, Agligoetok said he felt supported by the Government of Nunavut during his quarantine in Yellowknife.

But he wants change.

If a father or mother were to be left in the capital with their children in similar circumstances, Agligoetok said the government should allow them to come home immediately – then self-isolate at home.

Nunavut health minister George Hickes told CBC North that Jackson's death isn't being deemed a death while under the care of the government because it occurred at a Yellowknife hotel not operated by the government.

NWT chief coroner Cathy Menard confirmed an investigation into the death is underway, but stressed it's not related to Covid-19.

"We are following the same process that is followed for every death that occurs when a person is outside of their own territory, province or country," stated Menard in an email April 15.

"Given that the investigation is ongoing and also to ensure that people are not alarmed without substantive reason, I encourage you to not speculate that this death investigation is a result of the current health pandemic."

"I will be looking at all aspects and factors of the case including the supports the family received during their mandatory self-isolation time period," she added.

Menard said a postmortem autopsy has been ordered.

Agligoetok said that will be taking place in Edmonton.

"They're waiting on the preliminary report right now," he said.

The heartsick father, who was granted a return home in the middle of his self-isolation order, is now back in Kugluktuk, where he's been receiving condolences and messages of support from friends and family over Facebook.

Agligoetok said he's completing the selfisolation at home. He's been asking residents not to visit, going as far as to make the request online before returning to Nunavut.

"I'm following my procedure; not letting anyone come visit."

In the meantime, Agligoetok is taking to Facebook to share photos of his beloved son Jackson.

"Home but still can't believe my baby's gone," he wrote.

Nunavut's longstanding infrastructure gaps made more glaring by Covid-19 crisis, Qaqqaq contends

The Covid-19 crisis is affecting Nunavummiut's social interactions, mental health, education, employment status and more.

Nunavut News asked Nunavut Member of Parliament Mumilaaq Qaqqaq to share her thoughts on the impacts and the government responses.

Nunavut News: What are your greatest concerns in regard to preparations for Covid-19? How adequately has the federal government helped Nunavut be positioned to react if/when Covid-19 begins to spread within the territory?

Mumilaaq Qaqqaq: Like a lot of Nunavummiut, I have felt that the federal government has made promising announcements, but we are not seeing those commitments reflected in our communities. I think territorial and local officials have taken the lead on making sure everything is being done to best of ability to prevent Covid-19 from arriving in Nunavut.

However, we need the federal government to step up and provide more support for our health resources. Issues including a lack of housing, insufficient health infrastructure and access to clean water yearround leave our communities more susceptible to infection.

These issues require meaningful investment from the federal government, but for decades has failed to deliver for Nunavummiut.

NN: Seeing as the territory has gone so long without a positive test, do you feel the authorities and Nunavummiut themselves have responded very well to date?

MQ: Dr. Patterson and his team have done a great job during this difficult time to guide the response.

I also think mayors and the Government of Nunavut have worked hard to make difficult and timesensitive decisions for across the territory. I know this has been an incredibly challenging time for everyone, but we must continue to support one another.

NN: What are your impressions of the self-isolation centres established in southern cities for Nunavummiut returning home?

MQ: Self-isolation before people return to the territory is an important step to keeping Covid-19 out of Nunavut. We need to make sure that people in isolation are having their needs met and are treated respectfully throughout a very stressful and difficult time.

It's also vital that staff and security at the centres are adequately tested to make sure they are not carriers of Covid-19 and potentially passing it along to individuals in self-isolation.

People who are coming home want to be part of the solution.

NN: Has Ottawa offered sufficient financial aid to businesses and laid off workers who are suffering through this pandemic?

Do you think mining companies should be entitled to federal assistance during this crisis?

MQ: Nunavummiut need to see the federal government move more quickly to provide support to workers and businesses who've been impacted. While recent announcements have been a step in the right direction, a lot of them have been patchwork fixes for the shortcomings of earlier announcements. The delays people are experiencing getting relief now will have a lasting impact.

My New Democratic colleagues and I are still calling on the federal government to provide direct support of $2,000 dollars to everyone to make sure seniors, students and people who are still working reduced hours are not falling further behind.

The federal government needs to focus on supporting workers and communities first during the Covid-19 crisis. If the federal government is creating specific support for sectors, like mining, those supports need to also benefit impacted workers and local communities.

NN: Education is essentially provincial/territorial domain. However, if you were living in Nunavut at present and you had schoolage children, would you be comfortable sending them back to school this spring, should the GN decide to reopen classrooms?

MQ: Whether I have kids or not isn't the point here. My job as the MP for Nunavut is to work for parents and families in Nunavut who are concerned about the future of their children during this pandemic.

It is really important that our youth and their families have access to strong education resources while they are at home. Right now I think we need to find ways to make sure educators can create and share resources – while making sure that people remain physically distant.

Dr. Patterson and the entire GN has shown an abundance of caution during this pandemic and have worked hard to minimize the risk of Covid-19 spreading in Nunavut. I believe they will use the best information available to decide when it is appropriate to open schools again. I'm confident that they'll listen to Nunavummiut's concerns and make sure reopening schools does not pose a risk to our communities.

NN: Do you choose to wear a mask in public? Why or why not?

MQ: Many people do not have the access to health equipment needed in the territory and across the country. I do not currently wear a mask in public.

I have worked hard to limit my time outside and have been very strict about physical distancing. I want to make sure personal protective equipment is prioritized for those who urgently need it like health-care workers. Local efforts to create masks for vulnerable individuals have been incredible to see.

NN: Beyond health, business and employment, what are the other concerns you're hearing from community leaders these days?

MQ: I have heard from a lot of people that they're missing their family and loved ones. People are missing birthdays and other significant milestones, which absolutely takes a toll. It's a challenging time for everyone and making sure we find solutions to help connect people is critical.

Community leaders have also expressed concern about internet connectivity. Making sure everyone can stay informed about Covid19 or apply for the benefits they're entitled to quickly will make a huge difference for many.

NN: Has it been possible to make headway on any federal matters unrelated to the coronavirus over the past month?

MQ: I always try to make sure my work is reflecting the needs of my constituents first and foremost.

In the last month that's predominately been focused on making sure Nunavummiut have the support and information they need regarding federal programs and announcements.

Covid-19 has highlighted how the federal government has failed to close the health infrastructure between Nunavut and other parts of Canada.

I've been working to make it clear to the federal government that tackling Covid-19 isn't just about acting today but also making sure that we see real investments in housing and expanding our local health-care infrastructure.

Project Naming is a trilingual Web exhibition and searchable photographic database available in Inuktitut, English and French. The goal of this project is to identify Inuit in the photographic collections of be able to enjoy the warmer weather these days, especially when we are all staying indoors to keep safe from Covid-19.

Every year Cambridge Bay holds it's annual spring carnival Omingmak Frolics, but this year it was announced by the hamlet office that is has been cancelled due to Covid19. Once we have been cleared safe from the virus, perhaps there will be events and family activities scheduled. But the community has been busy with projects for all ages to practice social distancing by having contests such as sewing stuffed animals, community wall hanging for unity and togetherness and more.

GN spends about $2 million for self-isolation $4,328 per individual for 14-days of self-isolation

On April 15 the Government of Nunavut (GN) released some figures that reveal the costs of self-isolation for Nunavummiut down south amid Covid-19.

Since March 25, Nunavut's residents, including students and medical travellers, have been required to undergo a mandatory 14-day self-isolation period in a GN designated hotel before entering the territory.

These hotels are situated in Yellowknife, Edmonton, Winnipeg and Ottawa.

Estimated costs indicate $115 per room per day, $75 for three meals per day and $112 for daily security service.

During a two week period, for each individual, $80 is being spent on laundry service and $20 for a shuttle bus service.

Therefore, the cost is approximately

$4,328 per individual for 14-days of selfisolation.

On April 14, Premier Joe Savikataaq had announced 230 Nunavummiut have returned to the territory since April 10; the first day of self-isolated residents returning home.

The latest information from the GN indicates that 302 Nunavummiut were selfisolating down south as of April 8.

Since April 7, the Department of Education has requested all teachers returning to the territory must also adhere to the 14-day self-isolation down south before entering the territory.

There are presently, 93 Nunavut teachers down south. On April 14, Health Minister George Hickes revealed, 24 or 25 teachers have either started their isolation or have registered in hotels down south.

Nunavut schools will not reopen

Nunavut All schools in Nunavut will remain closed to students for the rest of the 2019-2020 school year.

This decision has been supported by Nunavut’s chief public health officer, announced Minister of Education David Joanasie at an April 17 press conference.

Teachers are expected to start work on April 21, regardless of the schools being closed.

There are presently 93 teachers in the south, who need to selfisolate for 14-days before returning to the territory.

Teachers will be developing learning packages for students.

These learning packages will take many forms including paperbased, activity-based and electronic-based. The purpose of these learning packages is to provide students with an opportunity to further develop their learning, explained Joanasie.

Beyond creating student learning packages, teachers will be asked to check in with students weekly, allowing teachers to track students’ progress and provide them with any extra resources.

Based on the needs of students and families, teachers could potentially communicate with them through phone, text, online portals or GN email.

Byelection date set

Kugluktuk The byelection for a new MLA in Kugluktuk is scheduled to take place on Aug. 24, the same day that Baker Lake will hold its MLA byelection.

Mila Kamingoak announced her resignation as Kugluktuk's member of the legislative assembly on March 31, telling Nunavut News that her children come first.

The GN originally planned to hold Baker Lake's byelection on April 27 but postponed it by a few months due to the coronavirus pandemic.

"Covid-19 has changed so much, so quickly. We must all adhere to the advice of our chief public health officer and allow our communities to prepare for an election in this new reality," said Premier Joe Savikataaq. "I thank Ms. Kamingoak for her time in the fifth legislative assembly of Nunavut and wish her and her family all the best moving forward."

Former Baker Lake MLA Simeon Mikkungwak informed his colleagues in the legislative assembly in late February that

he was stepping down because his wife's health was a greater priority and he needed to "focus all of my energy on being with my family at home."

Iqaluit man charged with pointing firearm at RCMP

Apex A man was arrested and charged following an incident in Apex Saturday where the RCMP say officers were confronted by an individual with a firearm.

Qaluraut Shaw, 33, faces charges of pointing a firearm, uttering threats, mischief under $5,000 and violating a probation order.

He's being held in jail, but he has a judicial appointment scheduled for April 20. The incident occurred at a residence in Apex during the afternoon.

The RCMP indicated that their investigation is ongoing, but also revealed that Ottawa Police Service has been engaged to conduct its own investigation of the Mounties' actions in relation to this incident.

Sanikiluaq is 'fairly calm' amid Covid-19, says MLA

Like many communities in Nunavut, the people in Sanikiluaq have been adhering to the social distancing protocols.

Stores have arranged designated times in the mornings for elders to shop. The number of shoppers permitted inside the store at any given time is also limited.

"They are doing what they can to help with social distancing," said Hudson Bay MLA Allan Rumbolt, referring to the Co-op and Northern store.

However when it comes to restocking the shelves, the stores are doing "OK," admitted the MLA, who represents Sanikiluaq. There are times when bread is not available, he explained.

Cargo planes, Air Inuit and Calm Air, continue to fly into the community on a regular basis.

The hamlet has also been providing food hampers for residents amid Covid-19, Rumbolt said.

Considering there is no case of the novel coronavirus presently, Rumbolt said, "I feel we are adequately staffed at the Heath Centre at this time."

The community has been preparing for a potential outbreak of Covid-19. Sanikiluaq has designated the Wellness Centre building as a location to screen patients if deemed necessary. In other words, the space will be used to determine whether an individual needs to be self-isolated or referred to the Health Centre for further evaluation.

The plan is also to use the hotel and a construction company's units as places to quarantine people.

The atmosphere in Sanikiluaq is "fairly calm", said the MLA. For the nearly three weeks, there have not been any passengers from Quebec flying into the community. He also believes it has been about two weeks since any passengers from Winnipeg have entered Sanikiluaq, said Rumbolt on April 14.

"That being said, I am not sure how many medical patients have returned from Winnipeg after their quarantine there," he said.

After a mandatory 14-day self-isolation period, the first wave of quarantined patients from Winnipeg started arriving into the territory since April 11.

Iglulik Mayor Merlyn Recinos knows what he'd do if his hamlet could get enough financial aid during this Covid-19 crisis.

The first thing would be to secure medical equipment. Iglulik has established a field hospital in its community hall in case of a virus outbreak.

"But we're lacking quite a bit of equipment," he said, adding that calling upon the Canadian Armed Forces' field hospital team would be a possibility if a crisis ensues locally.

Another initiative would be to set up a program to feed local children.

"Kids are not going to school. A lot of them used to get their breakfasts there and their lunches. We can definitely see a huge need in it," he said.

The third idea that Recinos would like to make a reality is multi-faceted.

It would entail counselling resources for local youth and improving

internet capacity and affordability so that young people could enjoy virtual activities.

"We continue to ask people to remain home, remain home and sometimes home is not the greatest place," he said, noting Nunavut's high suicide rate.

The hamlet has applied for funding to get electronic tablets in the hands of local youth and there's been discussions about various online games and internet performances by ArtCirq – an Inuit circus group – that young residents could enjoy from home.

"Even one to two hours a day to allow them to share and have that support there I think would be phenomenal," the mayor said.

Among the things that the hamlet has been able to accomplish is supplying cleaning products for local households to sanitize and clearing roads to various cabins so some residents can self-isolate. Council also passed a motion to redirect $15,000

a week from operations budget to go toward food vouchers.

"We've been working with the food bank to ensure that anybody that needs it is able to secure a food voucher to provide them food," said Recinos.

The hamlet has also been able to take advantage of food security funding offered through Nunavut Tunngavik Incorporated (NTI) and the Government of Nunavut, as well as water delivery money through NTI, Recinos noted.

"That is the only funding that we have been able to get into," said the mayor.

Recinos was able to get Northern Affairs Minister Dan Vandal on the phone a few weeks ago and he urged the minister to ensure municipalities are not overlooked.

"As the money is flowing and they're making decisions, (I asked Vandal) not to forget to ask the communities what they need to make sure there is no gaps," Recinos said.

In the midst of Covid-19 people in the Kitikmeot have been keeping busy while keeping their distance whether it be learning traditional skills at home, entering contests put on by the hamlets, travelling out on the land and sending birthday greetings

Spring festivals such as the Nattiq Frolics have been cancelled for this year as well so residents are getting creative to find ways to spend time.

As promised earlier this month, we shall begin a search of great proportion.

Nunavut has had several athletes who have made us proud over the years but it's time to find out which one stands out.

Which one has provided us with the most pride? Which one has towered over the rest?

Who is the Greatest Nunavut Athlete Of All Time?

In the April 6 edition of Nunavut News, we threw out some names to you for suggestions and asked you to come up with others for the competition. The response was quite good and from that, we present to you the six contenders for the title.

They're being presented in no particular order because that's where you will come in.

Here they are beginning with the obvious: Jordin Tootoo The only Inuk to ever play in the National Hockey League to this point, several of you felt he was the No. 1 choice. It would be hard to argue with that because he would be the top choice of any southern-based poll.

Why? Easy – Tootoo is the only Inuk athlete southerners know. Good thing Nunavummiut know him better.

He left home to go play bantam in Spruce Grove, Alta., before being drafted by the Brandon Wheat Kings of the Western Hockey League. From there, he got the chance to play at the World Junior Hockey Championship in Halifax in 2003, where he helped Canada to a silver medal.

But it was in 2001 where Tootoo made the biggest noise of all when he was drafted by the Nashville Predators, becoming the first Inuk drafted by a National Hockey League team. He would go on to spend 11 years with the Predators organization before signing with the Detroit Red Wings in 2012. That stint lasted two years before he was bought out of his contract and he moved on to New Jersey, where he spent two seasons.

His final NHL stop was with the Chicago Blackhawks, who waived him in 2017 before he officially hung up the skates in 2018.

In all, Tootoo played in 723 regular season NHL games and tallied 161 points overall, but more than that, he showed Nunavummiut that yes, you too can play in the NHL if you work hard enough and want it bad enough.

Drew Bell What hasn't Arviat's Drew Bell done in his Arctic sports career? He is Nunavut's most decorated male Arctic sports athlete at the Arctic Winter Games and is always a force to be reckoned with whenever he decides to enter any sort of competition. He was set to go into the 2020 Arctic Winter Games as the defending gold uluit in the open men's triple jump and open men's one-hand reach, the event in which he set the new world record of 5 ft. 7 in. at the 2018 Games in Fort Smith, NWT. His other world record? A leap of 11.49 metres in the triple jump, a mark he set at the 2016 AWG in Nuuk, Greenland.

Something else which makes Bell a great athlete: he's always learning. If you find his biography page from the 2018 AWG, you'll see a large paragraph where he describes how weight training has helped him with his vertical leaps.

He is, in essence, a student of his craft, even after all of his success.

Kiviaq He was known as David Charles Ward for many years but he won back the right to be called his traditional name in 2001.

The name he was given by his mother when he was born in Chesterfield Inlet in 1936.

Kiviaq moved to Edmonton in his younger days and became quite the boxer both as a way to work out his emotions and to protect himself from those ignoramuses who took shots at him simply because of who he was.

His first big triumph came when he was 13 years old as he won his first Golden Gloves title. From there, he would go on to win 108 of 112 fights as an amateur boxer. At the age of 19, he would try out for the Edmonton Eskimos and make the team but would never play a down of football for the club. He was injured when he slipped on the turf and was subsequently drilled by three other players.

His football career continued at Northwestern State College in Louisiana, which gave him a football scholarship. He was eligible to play college football in the U.S. because he never earned a dime playing with Edmonton.

From there, he would become a two-term city councillor in Edmonton and would go to law school, eventually being called to the bar in 1983 as Canada's first Inuk lawyer. But it would be in 2001 where he made his mark.

Kiviaq died in 2016 after losing a battle with cancer but he will forever live on as one of a kind in both sport and in life.

Susie Pearce Susie Pearce of Iqaluit is one of those athletes who has been athletic for so long, you often forget she's been representing jurisdictions in some way, shape or form since the age of 10.

Her first foray into the Arctic Winter Games came in 1990 when she made Team NWT's gymnastics team (the NWT was still one giant land mass at that time) and would do so again in 1992. She would transition into Arctic sports for the 1996 AWG and would compete with Team Nunavut on seven different occasions, the last time being 2016 in Greenland.

And just for good measure, she played with Team NWT in outdoor soccer for the 1997 Canada Summer Games.

She has been that good for that long and there's a good chance she isn't finished yet.

Eugene Dederick Remember when I told you Eugene Dederick held a special place in Nunavut sporting lore? Exactly, I didn't. I said it was Louis Nutarariaq.

I made a boo-boo and I'm correcting it with this because Eugene Dederick of Iqaluit makes this list for one very simple reason: to this day, he is the only Nunavut athlete to win a medal at either the Canada Winter Games or Canada Summer Games.

Dederick turned the trick in judo in at the 2007 Canada Winter Games in Whitehorse and beat Scott MacAdam of Nova Scotia to do it in the boys 100-kg and over category. He lost just one match on the way to making history.

From there, Dederick would hit the podium five more times between 2007 and 2009, including wins at the Quebec Open and Edmonton International Judo Championships.

Andy Attagutalukutuk You simply can't have a debate about Nunavut's best athletes and not include this man.

Andy Attagutalukutuk of Iglulik has arguably been one of the best dog mushers in Nunavut for many years and one of the best in the North. He made the Nunavut Quest his own for much of the decade of the 2010s and has been a frequent participant many times over.

His key to success? Training his dogs with a heavy qamutik.

After winning the 2017 race, Attagutalukutuk spoke with Nunavut News and said he likes to train his dogs to be strong first and he does by loading up his qamutik with ice.

The qamutik is also made heavy as well, he added.

In any event, Attagutalukutuk deserves to be included among any list of great Nunavut athletes.

Here's how the voting will be conducted: All six will go into a round-robin of sorts where they will be put into a group in no particular order. Your job will be to rank the group from one to six in order of where you think they should be on the list. For example, if you want Susie Pearce to be at the top, you would put her at the top. Your second choice would go under Pearce and so on down until you come up with your sixth choice.

The voting in the round-robin will open up

on the Nunavut News Facebook page April 21 at 11 a.m. and will continue until April 28 at 11:59 p.m. EDT. Following the close of voting, the top four from your votes will go into a playoff round of sorts and will face off in a single-elimination bracket over three consecutive weeks.

The athlete who is named first on the most amount of votes will be the top seed, followed by the athlete who receives the most amount of second choice votes as the second seed and so on. The top seed will take on the fourth seed and the second seed will square off with the third seed. The winners will advance to the final in a winner-take-all battle and in all three playoff match-ups, your votes will determine the winner.

Everyone needs to get through this with their vices, right?

Right.

Take Olive Veronisi, for example. The 93-year-old is housebound at her home in Pennsylvania and wanted beer. She wanted beer so badly that she held up a sign saying 'I need more beer!' while holding up a can of Coors Light. Molson Coors answered Olive's plea for help by dropping off 150 cans of Coors Light to her front door on April 13. Well done, Molson Coors and hope you enjoy the beer, Olive. She's just given us all a great idea, right?

Anyway ...

Actual baseball actually happened Yes, gang, it's true: Belarusian soccer isn't the only game in town anymore when it comes to professional sports.

The Chinese Professional Baseball League in Taiwan opened its 2020 season on April 11 with the Chinatrust Brothers taking on the Uni-President 7-Eleven Lions. With a name like that, I can get behind them no problem. Anyway, the game took place behind closed doors because of the Covid-19 scare and that's how every game this season will be played.

Plenty of firsts in that big game, including Kai-Wan Cheng of the Lions becoming the first player to hit a home run in any sort of professional baseball game in 2020 when he went deep in the second inning so congrats to you, sir. Tzu-Hsien Chan tied the game with a solo blast of his own in the fourth inning to tie the game at 1-1.

Some super defence as well as Lions catcher Chung-Yu Chen caught Wei-Ta Su of the Brothers straying too far off of first base in the sixth inning and pulled off one of my favourite plays in sports: the backpick. That's where the catcher snaps a throw down to first base to get a napping baserunner and is the opposite of a pickoff.

In the end, the game went into bonus baseball with the Lions coming out on top, 4-1, in 11 innings in a game which took more than four hours to play. To put that into Major League Baseball terms, the same amount of time it takes the New York Yankees and Boston Red Sox to play six innings of regulation baseball.

No fans to speak of Even though there were no fans to speak of, there was an atmosphere as robots were playing on drums and making some sort of noise to at least give the impression of a pulse.

So there you have it. Slowly, but surely, we are getting some action in place and there's now a second option for you if Belarusian soccer isn't your thing. Guess who's a 7-Eleven Lions fan now?

We all heard about the death of Colby Cave of the Edmon-

Here's Tainan Municipal Baseball Stadium, home of the Uni-President 7-Eleven Lions of the Chinese Professional Baseball League in Taiwan. The league is underway with its 2020 season, albeit behind closed doors with robots and mannequins providing the in-game entertainment. ton Oilers earlier this month. He succumbed after losing a battle with a brain bleed at Sunnybrook Hospital in Toronto on April 13 and if he was going to survive it, he would have the best chance at the best hospital in the country, hands down.

Alas, he didn't. But the hockey community is like no other, just like we saw with the outpouring of support for Humboldt, Sask., two years ago after that horrific bus crash that claimed the lives of 16 members of the Humboldt Broncos. Cave was from Saskatchewan – North Battleford, to be exact – and his hometown rallied around the family with a tremendous show of support.

Cave's family returned home and waiting for them was a line of cars, estimated to be around 15-km long on Highway 16 leading into North Battleford and almost everyone had a jersey, sign or piece of art in support of the now-late Oiler.

But in every sad story comes a bit of good as the Oilers have created the Colby Cave Memorial Fund, which will raise money for community programs with an emphasis on mental health and providing access to less-fortunate children who want to play sports. I can get behind that because every child deserves a chance to play anything they want.

And finally ...

Good Idea: WWE continuing with its regular programming during the Covid-19 pandemic.

Bad Idea: WWE being labelled an "essential service" by the Florida state governor.

WWE has garnered a reputation of being the quickest of all sport/entertainment organizations to get back to business after a tragedy. Kind of like the Waffle House of showbiz, if you will.

The company is still operating during the Covid-19 pandemic, which is great because we all need some sort of release from the stress being put on us all because of this. But isn't it interesting that WWE has been declared an essential service

by Ron DeSantis, the governor of the state of Florida? You see, because crowds can't attend WWE live events, the company is doing its shows at the WWE Performance Centre, its training ground, in Orlando, Florida.

Those shows include Monday Night Raw, Friday Night Smackdown, NXT and 205 Live plus any and all pay-perviews. WrestleMania was done in Orlando after the original plans for Tampa Bay, Florida, were scrapped. Because of no crowd – rumoured to be between 60,000 to 70,000 – and no merchandise sales and no income of any kind off of its annual showpiece spectacle, the company reportedly lost revenue in the neighbourhood of $22 million.

Now, so long as everyone associated with the company tests negative for the virus and everyone associated with the company stays together under the same roof, there shouldn't be any worries about Covid-19. As for the essential service designation, I'm not so sure. I like watching professional wrestling but there's more important and essential services out there.

Territory receives $35.8 million for Covid-19 from Ottawa

The GN wants more money from the federal government to help airlines during Covid-19.

On April 14, Premier Joe Savikataaq announced that $35.8 million in funds will be given to Nunavut by the federal government for the territory's health system, airlines, Nutrition North and small businesses.

"While we welcome these funds and the relief it brings, Nunavut needs more and we need it now," said the Premier. "Nunavut is chronically underfunded and we cannot be

expected to deal with this new global reality from behind the starting line."

The GN views this initial fund as "a solid foundation", but plans to work with the Government of Canada to obtain more money for the territory during Covid-19.

Four weeks ago, the GN had requested $42 million, said Savikataaq, adding "there's quite a lag in getting our answers."

Savikataaq expressed his disappointment to Dan Vandal, minister of northern affairs, about not receiving the requested funding and lengthy wait time for the response.

To date, the GN has already

spent $20.4 million of its own money, revealed the premier.

Currently, the GN is spending $2.25 million weekly on airlines in order to maintain basic scheduling and keep the airline industry in operation.

"We need more investment from the Government of Canada in this area. Air travel is our only link between communities and the rest of Canada. It is vital that we maintain this service and ensure its viability after this pandemic," expressed Nunavut's premier.

"We can't continue to fund the airlines at an indefinite rate because we don't know how long this Covid-19 stuff is going to go on."

The GN officials are working out the "exact details" on what is being funded, said Savikataaq, noting that "the bulk of the health funding portion has been funded."

As of April 17, there were still no confirmed cases of the novel coronavirus in Nunavut.

Presently, 288 people are under investigation for Covid-19, while 181 have been cleared.

"We can't continue to fund the airlines at an indefinite rate," says Premier Joe Savikataaq.
