The Qaujigiartiit Health Research Centre (QHRC) was tasked by the Government of Nunavut’s Department of Health to undertake a needs assessment to better understand maternity care experiences of women and their families in the Kivalliq.

“The information obtained is one tool we will use to guide future programming decisions for maternity care services,” stated Danarae Sommerville, communications specialist for the department, in an email.

“The information gathered from the

surveys and key informant interviews conducted by QHRC will provide us with valuable information regarding the experiences of childbearing women and their families, which in turn will be incorporated into recommendations for strengthening the overall delivery of maternity care services.

“It will also help inform the department of the necessary actions required to implement a sustainable healthcare workforce.”

The GN continues to be actively involved in discussion with southern universities to determine appropriate education and training opportunities for Inuit midwives, she added.

Nunavut’s plan for climate change Permafrost research and renewables part of strategy

The onset of climate change, bringing gradual change to average weather patterns across Canada each year, is having a big impact in Nunavut and the wider Arctic.

These include but are not limited to the melting of permafrost, glacial retreat, shifting animal habitats, coastal erosion and increasingly unpredictable weather.

“Climate change is a global issue,” said Sara Holzman, climate change program specialist with the Government of Nunavut’s (GN) department of Environment.

The GN Climate Change Secretariat (CCS), under the department of Environment, was es-

tablished in November 2016 to coordinate the various departments within the GN and was created to help form partnerships, develop policies and aid Nunavummiut in adapting and mitigating the impacts of climate change.

Two departments the Secretariat often works and cooperates with are the Nunavut Housing Corporation and Qulliq Energy Corporation (QEC) to help spread awareness through campaigns on how Nunavummiut can save more energy.

QEC’s net-metering program allows homeowners to create their own renewable energy while adding more electricity to the grid and getting it back in the form of energy credits for future bills. The department of environment also incentivizes cabin owners to utilize renewables through the Renewable Energy Cabin Grant.

The best way to tackle climate change, says Holzman, is together.

“Everyone has a role in taking action on climate change, whether it’s reducing their carbon footprint by turning off their lights, putting solar panels on their cabins, or planning for unpredictable weather and changing travel routes when out on the land.”

The federal government also takes part in advocating for clean energy in the North, one example being supporting a community energy plan for Kugaaruk through Natural Resources Canada’s Indigenous Off-Diesel Initiative and Catalyst Program, expected to run through to 2024.

Community energy plans help identify the best opportunities for energy projects, the plan in Kugaaruk involves solar panels for its arena.

CCS has also partnered up with Sakku Investments Corporation to help develop community energy plans for Naujaat and Coral Harbour in Kivalliq, as well as Nunasi, Kitikmeot Corporation and Polar Knowledge Canada for Cambridge Bay. Research is also being done on the impacts of thawing permafrost in Kugluk Territorial Park near Kugluktuk, which is experiencing significant changes due to melting permafrost and soil erosion. The GN actively takes part in the permafrost monitoring network PermafrostNet. “All regions in Nunavut are already experiencing climate change impacts, though it’s unclear which regions and which sectors are being impacted the most,” said Holzman.

More details needed on federal budget, says Nunavut senator Nunavut businesses optimistic on tax cuts

Northern Affairs Minister Daniel Vandal touched down in Iqaluit on April 12, showcasing Budget 2022 –introduced the previous week – and the benefits it has to offer to Nunavummiut.

Sixty million dollars earmarked for housing projects for each territory will have “very few” conditions to it, meaning each territory can use it to help complete or fund other existing units under construction.

“There’s also other pots of housing money, Indigenous Services has $845 million over seven years for Inuit Nunangat housing,” said Vandal, adding there’s billions in additional national housing funding that “Nunavut has a right to get.”

Joining Vandal at the Aqsarniit Hotel in highlighting the budget were members of Iqaluit’s business community who praised the budget’s focus on tax cuts for small businesses, housing and clean energy.

Harry Flaherty, president of the Qikiqtaaluk Corporation which helped build the Aqsarniit Hotel, welcomed Budget 2022 as being perfect for the Corporation’s future plans for the hotel.

“I’m extremely proud when I heard what the federal government announced for clean energy with the support of Natural Resources Canada,” said Flaherty.

“Aqsarniit Hotel and Conference Centre will soon be the host of a clean energy micro-grid, providing independent heat and power to the facility,” he added, with a

Nunavut senator cautiously optimistic Dennis Patterson, Nunavut’s senator, was present for Vandal’s visit and spoke about what his appraisal of Budget 2022 has been so far.

With over $6 billion budgeted for defence priorities, the independent senator hopes to see the Canadian Military take a more active role in the North, however Patterson is going to be waiting until those details are hashed out.

One particular part of Budget 2022 Patterson particularly was ex-

cited for was the $228 million announced for trauma-informed, culturally appropriate Indigenous-led services for mental health, which was “tailor-made for Nunavut” and

the issues the territory faces.

However, Patterson reiterated the need to wait for specifics to be broken down, saying “the devil is often in the details.”

During his visit to Iqaluit, Northern Affairs Minister Daniel Vandal held a public appearance alongside Nunavut premier P.J Akeeagok, Nunavut Tunngavik Incorporated (NTI) President Aluki Kotierk and Iqaluit mayor Kenny Bell to reaffirm the federal government’s partnership with them to work on Nunavut housing.

A portion of $845 million earmarked in the April 7 federal budget for housing in Inuit Nunangat will be coming to the territory in addition to a $60 million “down-payment” toward Nunavut housing over two years.

“Our government will continue working with partners like NTI, the Government of Nunavut and mayor and the City of Iqaluit to address important issues of housing availability and quality which disproportionately affects Northerners,” said Vandal.

All levels of government Kotierk referred to a letter from Vandal last May, addressed to her and Akeeagok asking to form a working group on Nunavut housing as an example on how a real partnership can help address long-standing issues

impacting Nunavummiut.

“I was very encouraged by that and we’re working in a tripartite fashion in relation to housing,” she said, adding that tripartite partnerships have been “very effective to be able to address the needs we have in Nunavut.”

Akeeagok expressed his optimism on what he has described as an important collaborative effort.

“I was really pleased right from the beginning as a new government to involve Inuit Organizations and regular members. Our partnership with NTI is so crucial,” said Akeeagok.

“It’s exactly these very important issues such as infrastructure, the housing issue, where we’re going to have to pull our limited resources to address long-standing issues.”

Bell, who is also the president of the Nunavut Association of Municipalities, added that “having us all work on housing for our citizens across the territory, not just Iqaluit, is extremely important for all of us.”

Vandal echoed this emphasis on partnership, who says the input of Nunavummiut is valuable in addressing housing needs in the territory.

“Part of our journey is to listen to people on the ground who far better understand their needs.”

While there isn’t a clear end to Nunavut’s housing crisis, Akeeagok said that “it’s going to happen through these partnerships.”

Science and experience don’t match up on snow levels Environment Canada says this is one of the snowiest winters ever, perplexing those on the land

According to data sourced by Environment Canada, the Kivalliq region and Nunavut as a whole have experienced one of the snowiest winters on record.

But anecdotal evidence from hunters and travellers on the land says almost the complete opposite.

And Environment Canada even agrees.

“I’m just at a loss to explain it,” said Sarah Hoffman, meteorologist with Environment Canada.

She has heard the same stories of lack of snow from people on the land, but perplexingly, her data doesn’t back it up.

“I’ve heard a similar story around Nunavut, but I have looked into the numbers and it seems like the numbers don’t really support the experience of the people on the ground,” said Hoffman.

“Most of the observations, especially around the Kivalliq, are actually a wetter than normal winter.”

In fact, Baker Lake’s winter has been the second wettest in Environment Canada’s 72 years of history. In Resolute, it’s the wettest winter in 75 years of data. For Rankin Inlet, it’s the seventh wettest in 40 years of data, and in Arviat, it’s the sixth wettest in 30 years of data.

Hoffman floated the possibility that blizzards and strong winds could be pushing snow toward Hudson Bay, noting that Environment Canada gets its measurements from places inside communities, usually the airport.

“I don’t know exactly why we have this discrepancy,” said Hoffman. “But I do want to

say that the experience of the people on the land is valid and they could be right. It’s just that our numbers don’t support that.”

Nathan Tulugak, a hunter in Rankin Inlet, is also at a loss.

“It’s just a headache,” he said, trying to provide for his family, friends and Elders in town in the 10 or so hunting trips per month he takes.

His sled even broke down on his last trip, and his brother had to haul him back to town, which took seven hours.

His Ski-Doo has been constantly overheating, and it’s forced him to spend about $3,000 more than he would in a normal winter to repair and maintain his equipment.

“The majority of the lakes have no snow,” said Tulugak.

It’s the first time he’s seen such a lack of snow in his 27-odd years of hunting.

There’s more snow on the land and sea ice, but on the lakes, Tulugak has to be careful to try to trace around the powdered and snow-packed areas on the sides and not run his machine over the bare ice for too long. Tracking animals has been made harder because of this too, he added.

He can’t explain the discrepancy between people’s experiences and the government’s data, but he knows it hasn’t been good for hunters.

Natasha Angajaaq Tattuinee said even the roads in Rankin Inlet have seemed to melt early.

“I needed to change my skis because the roads melted too quick,” she said. “And not just the ski rods.”

Environment Canada looked into whether winter melts could have played a role in the lack of snow on the ground, but at least between December and February, there appeared to be no significant heatwaves to cause that.

Caribou stewardship may be best path forward The fate of the herds cannot be left up to chance Northern News Services

The fact that caribou numbers are declining sharply despite efforts to either slow the losses or, with luck, increase the numbers of the vulnerable species is one of the biggest challenges we face in light of a changing climate and economic advancement.

There have been a number of strategies employed to help bolster Northern caribou herds, as declining numbers set off alarm bells for the future of what is a key species for humans and animals alike in our ecosystem.

Concerns abound with Baffinland’s proposed Mary River Mine expansion, the decision for which is expected from Northern Affairs Minister Dan Vandal in the coming weeks. These aren’t new concerns either — for much of the last decade the potential impacts of this decision have been discussed, at length.

In the second quarter of 2021, World Wildlife Foundation Canada published concerns from Paul Okalik, the organization’s lead Arctic specialist, who stated that the mining road that serves the Agnico Eagle mine near Baker Lake is not benign when it comes to wildlife.

“Studies have shown that when there’s constant traffic on that road, the migratory patterns of the caribou

are affected. But when the road is shut down for a two-week period, the caribou can travel back and forth freely. In the years when there has been no shutdown, the caribou have been unable to migrate to their wintering or summer areas.

“Considering these impacts, a permanent railway with ongoing traffic and rail cars (at the Mary River Mine) is a real concern.”

The impact of mining activities is only a small part of the overarching caribou problems, however.

Loss of habitat in southern ranges, impact from other resource extraction activities, environmental changes impacting food sources, increased predation from wolves – and in some interesting cases, polar bears – and other factors are combining to create a perfect storm of extirpation and extinction.

There is hope, however, in a piece of good news that comes from the West Moberly and Salteau First Nations in northern B.C., who have seen some serious success with their one-of-akind project in Canada to protect caribou mothers and calves in birthing pens.

The findings from the last eight years of research were laid out in two papers published in the journal Ecological Applications on March 23.

By proactively culling wolves – a practice already employed in the NWT and Nunavut – they found populations of caribou could hold stable, however, with the addition of supervised birthing pens they have managed to increase the population of the decimated Klinse-Za caribou herd from 38 animals in 2013 to 114 at the most recent count, an increase of 12 per cent per year.

Here is a project that bears expansion if we want to improve the odds of survival of these vital herds.

The Beverly and Qamanirjuaq Caribou Management Board just missed getting a badly needed increase in funding that would aid them in communications with Indigenous partners, as well as address broader problems – including climate change – facing the herds that they say partner governments cannot dedicate as many resources to.

Could an increase in funding also give these caribou management boards and hunters and trappers organizations the backing to build a prosperous future for the animals?

Ongoing, proactive recovery for caribou is the only strategy worth employing, and working together with industry, communities, our neighbours and governments could see lasting benefits for all.

Brent Nakashook and Amory Wood travelled more than 800 km from Yellowknife home to Cambridge Bay by snowmobile Northern News Services

If you need a snowmobile, you go buy one! But these two brave young men made a plan, a very amazing plan to bring home their new snowmobiles!

Amory Wood and Brent Nakashook of Cambridge Bay, Nunavut flew to Yellowknife, NT on regular scheduled flight. Upon arriving they bought their snowmobiles but now needed to get them home, so they planned a journey to bring them home – not by air cargo, but by driving them home by land and sea.

They planned their trip from a map, carefully looking at some rough terrain, ice, snow and weather conditions were all laid out. Planning their rough route involved studying previous travelers’ trails, mining company roads and ice road routes to bring home their new

toys. Now they needed alliaks (sleds) to carry their supplies and gas, so from scratch they both built two sleds.

The journey of roughly 850 kilometres took 11 days, with an extra four days waiting for snowmobile parts. They waited it out at Kingaut (Bathurst Inlet) in houses more like mansions after days on the land, equipped with oil stoves, kitchenettes, and a power grid which was hooked up to a honey bucket, which was a nice change for them.

Wildlife was seen along their amazing trip – muskox, foxes, wolverine, wolf tracks, caribou, also seen this early in the season were ptarmigans and other migratory birds at Kingaut. Since Brent grew up on the land hunting and fishing, he noticed evidence of climate change happening, such as steam rising where there is open water along their trail.

Brent remembers boating only till September each fall time, but now this past fall they were boating till November.

He was happy to share his experiences and stories and photographs to teach the younger generations living their dreams and aspirations. While growing up with grandparents living a traditional cultural lifestyle was where he began his lifelong love of Inuit life.

With youth facing changes such as suicide, depression, trauma, abuse, addictions, alcohol and drugs it was time to try and make a change to help his fellow youth and Inuit, to show youth fun can be had being sober and clean and by this trip which they did to show the kids they can do like what Brent and Amory did.

It is time to reconsider the development of Resolute Bay Editor’s note: This article originally appeared in the March 25, 2022 edition of The Hill Times. It is reprinted with permission.

The Russian invasion of Ukraine has increased the need for Canada to review its security posture in the Arctic. Even the territorial leadership is now concerned with the government’s ability to provide security in the Arctic.

They have requested a meeting with the Prime Minister.

Although our critical Arctic domain awareness has improved over the years with the deployment of the RADARSAT Constellation, improvements to the Canadian Ranger capabilities and the recent deployment of Arctic Offshore Patrol Ships, other areas are lacking.

Most of the North Warning System air defence radar sites use obsolete technologies and there is no plan or funding at the moment to replace it. It is doubtful that the present system would even be able to detect the Russian advanced weapons such as hypersonic cruise missiles or glide vehicles. Our F-18s need replacement and a winner of the competition to replace them has not yet been announced. Our ability to monitor underwater activity in the Archipelago, especially when ice covered, is sadly lacking. Additionally, there is no deep-sea port in the High Arctic to support operations.

It would be useful to review once more why Resolute Bay should be developed as a security hub in the Arctic. It is centrally located in the middle of the Arctic Archipelago and sits on both the classical Northwest Passage and the most used of the seven possible transit routes.

It would plug the 2,900 kilometre gap between our CF-18 Forward Operation Locations in Inuvik and Iqaluit. Being further North, it would be better able to support fighter operations up to Canadian Forces Alert at the Northern tip of Ellesmere Island. From Resolute Bay it would also be easier to monitor activity in our Arctic

as well as support search and rescue, environmental response, safety and security operations.

Deployment time of resources from Resolute Bay would be approximately the same in all directions.

On several occasions I recommended that Resolute Bay be further developed to host a multi-departmental facility that would be anchored on an all-seasons paved runway supported by modern instrument approaches and a long-range air defence radar to support fighter operations. The facility could also host a network of sub-surface monitoring devices, a polar orbit satellite download farm, a protected docking facility and a ship and aircraft refueling capability. This multi-purpose facility would operate on a seasonal basis. During the active shipping season, the facility would see a peak in operations. Some personnel would be permanently stationed in Resolute Bay while others would be added to deal with increased seasonal activity.

The Canadian Forces could use the facility to support fighter operations, long range maritime patrol aircraft and unmanned aerial vehicles (drone) used for Arctic surveillance. A longrange air defence radar would add to the North Warning System. The enhanced runway and related facilities would support the Canadian Forces’ and Coast Guard’s Search and Rescue Operations and increase our ability to deliver under the Arctic Council’s Agreement on Cooperation on Aeronautical and Maritime Search and Rescue. Underwater sensor monitoring devices in that natural choke point would allow the detection of submerged vessels. The Resolute Bay location would also facilitate the deployment of boarding parties ready to deal with rogue vessels attempting to run the Northwest Passage such as that New Zealand sailboat that ran the Northwest Passage despite a prohibition due to Covid risk to Inuit communities.

Overheating Ski-Doo leads to rescue Andrew Alerk advises never leaving your machine while in a perilous situation

With visions of caribou in his mind, Andrew Alerk left Baker Lake just before 7 a.m. on March 28, heading toward Judge Sissons Lake.

But as he went across the lake, his snowmobile overheated due to the lack of snow on the ice.

“I stopped for a moment to cool it off and added a bit of antifreeze,” said Alerk, who took off again north of Princess Mary Lake hills.

His Ski-Doo overheated again, and just past Aniguq hill, he parked it to let it cool and added some antifreeze, but the machine became stuck in the snow.

“I was tired, exhausted and hungry as I left town early in the morning without eating as I had no food,” said Alerk.

“Just when I gave up, wanting to walk back to town, I decided to try to get the Ski-Doo out one more time. I cried out to God, ‘If you love me, I need your strength to get me out, God.’” While holding down the throttle, he finally managed to budge his machine.

Alerk reconnected the sleds and began travelling again near Princess Mary Lake, but his Ski-Doo overheated more than a dozen times along the way.

It was nearly 6 p.m. and Alerk decided he needed to get home, even though he was anxious for a catch.

He was down to his last jug of antifreeze to fend off the SkiDoo overheating, but the machine wasn’t lasting long in the conditions. Going through Pitz Lake Hills – which his cousin Russell Toolooktook had told him provided a faint bit of internet service – Alerk heard his cell phone ring.

He quickly went on Facebook to alert his friends and family to his situation, but he kept losing connection. He texted Toolooktook that he was cold, tired and hungry and his Ski-Doo needed antifreeze, and then he lost internet service.

“I thought of putting up the tarp, then use my sleeping bag to try to warm up and sleep, but it was too cold, so I decided to try to start the Ski-Doo once more,” recalled Alerk. “Whoa, it started. Then (I) went down the hill before it got completely dark.”

He stumbled upon fresh tracks from another hunter – Lars Qaqqaq – and followed them in the dark until his Ski-Doo gave out.

“I was a bit scared ‘cause I couldn’t see anything in the dark, and I had less than quarter of antifreeze, so I put in my last drop,” said Alerk.

His Ski-Doo made it about a half mile before he heard Toolooktook calling, saying search and rescue was on the way with antifreeze. Toolooktook told Alerk to stay put.

But exhausted and starving, Alerk tried to push on just a bit farther, even seeing search and rescue’s Ski-Doo lights in the distance. He cut off the fresh trail and his Ski-Doo got stuck in soft, deep snow, forcing him to wait it out.

“I kept turning on the Ski-Doo every few minutes to let them know my position,” said Alerk.

Search and rescue finally made it to Alerk, offering him hot soup to warm up and helping him get out of the deep snow, eventually following him back to town to make sure he arrived safely.

“I was scared but I learned not to panic,” said Alerk, remem-

He learned from that trip not to leave his machine while in a perilous situation.

Alerk finally made it home just before 1 a.m. on March 29.

“While being stuck out there, a lot goes through your mind,” said Alerk. “Scary at first, but try to stay calm no matter what, be patient with the search and rescue team, as they will eventually find you, and never panic.”

Always bring a sleeping bag and a pana, he added, and even extra sleeping bags and food and drinks.

“Always dress warm too,” added Alerk, “as your equipment won’t tell you it’s going to break down.”

Finally, he suggests hunters and travellers always inform their friends and family where they are headed and for how long, so that search and rescue will know where to look.

No new funding this year for caribou management board

Executive director says funding partners expressed support, problem was timing of request

A Northern caribou management board has failed to secure its desired funding boost for the current fiscal year despite an enthusiastic response from the federal, provincial, territorial and Indigenous governments.

The Beverly and Qamanirjuaq Caribou Management Board oversees the health and conservation of both the Beverly and Qamanirjuaq caribou herds, whose combined range spans the NWT, Nunavut, Alberta, Saskatchewan and Manitoba.

At the last of its twice-annual annual meetings in December 2021, the board requested a doubling of its funding over 10 years, to $250,000, from its government partners, including the Government of Canada and the GNWT. The board also requested $10,000 in additional funding from each of the five participating Indigenous governments, which would bring its total budget in 10 years to $300,000.

The board’s executive director, Tina Giroux-Robillard, said it’s been about a decade since the organization’s funding has increased.

She said the current budget “has really not met the demands of growth — even inflation hasn’t

kept up. So in order to modernize the management agreement, and to bring it to modern times, we assessed a really modest budget of what we would need to really be able to capitalize on where we’re at.

“I think everybody understands, and has expressed to us, how much the board does and how it’s needed,” said Giroux-Robillard. “And the work that we do is valuable. For this year, we weren’t able to reach those deadlines.”

The board received positive responses from the Indigenous governments about making their own contributions, she noted.

As Giroux-Robillard explained, the failure to secure additional funding was not due to a lack of interest, but because the request came too late in each party’s budget planning process to be added to their 2022-‘23 fiscal plans.

“So we are continuing to get funding this year. However, we’re not getting the increase in funding that we had hoped for, but we are pretty hopeful that we will be getting that moving forward, next fiscal year and on,” she said.

According to the management board’s website, the population of the Beverly herd decreased from approximately 136,600 in 2011 to 103,400 in 2018. The Qamanirjuaq herd decreased from about

With additional funding, Giroux-Robillard said the board would be able to improve its communication with its Indigenous partners.

“We need to increase our communication and our support for our board members that are in the Indigenous communities that really depend on the caribou,” she said.

She also said the board is in a position to take a broader view on some of the challenges faced

by the herds, such as climate change, that each of the partner governments alone may not be able to take.

A spokesperson for the territorial government said, “The GNWT is committed to working towards a funding agreement with all partners on the Beverly and Qamanirjuaq Caribou Management Board,” but did not elaborate further.

The board’s next meeting is scheduled to take place in Winnipeg on May 3.

nous peoples. The Inuvialuit, Dene, Metis and Inuit/Innu were not the only affected groups but also the Australians, South Americans and many other groups. The ramifications behind the genocide and attempted assimilation has damaged several generations and we are still here but deeply wounded.

The biggest cover-up that is very visible today is the numbing approach with alcohol and drugs. This only works for the moment but adds more pain and complication to the mental and emotional state of each individual, not to mention the side effects of these substances on the health and well-being.

Soon cannabis becomes familiar and acclimatized within the metabolism and stronger substance is looked for further disabling the user. As caregivers, we need to be vigilant in constructive measures and not allow destructive activity in defeating survivors.

When we mention a user or survivor, it is not saying one person only, we are talking about their partner, spouse, child, children, parents, grandparents and those they call friends.

Nominations open for Commissioner’s Arts Award Nunavut On April 13, Eva Aariak, the Commissioner of Nunavut announced the opening of nominations for the 2022 Nunavut Commissioner Arts Award. This is an opportunity to acknowledge artists within the territory who bring recognition to Inuit culture and support Nunavut’s economy.

“It is a privilege to recognize Inuit artistic expression. Our artistic ability is revealed in the original tools, clothing and implements for daily living that we have developed,” said Aariak.

The Award’s prize of $10,000 will be presented to an established Inuit artist who has made a significant contribution to the arts. These may include visual arts, performing arts or literature.

Past winners include Iglulik’s Susan Avinnaq and Pangnirtung carver Jaco Ishulutaq.

Nominations will be reviewed by a committee who will then make recommendations to the Commissioner, members of this committee will be chosen from the art sector of Nunavut.

Deadline for nominations is June 30.

Applications open to Ajunngi Anaanas Kangiqliniq/Rankin Inlet Ilitaqsiniq is accepting applications for its Ajunngi Anaanas program, which will offer mothers 20 three-hour sessions from late April to June to gather together.

The sessions will take place Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday evenings, with babysitting compensation available.

Participants will engage in activities such as sewing, baking, cooking, beading, traditional parenting knowledge, self-reflection, self-love and Inuit Qaujimatajatuqangit learning.

The exhibit, featuring drawings, prints and sculptures, is called New Inuit Art: Contemporary Art from Kinngait and is taking place from March 15 to May 29. It showcases art created within the last 10 years from the West Baffin Eskimo Cooperative.

“The artists participating in this exhibition are primarily unknown to Polish audiences,” said Pauloosie Kowmageak, the president of West Baffin Eskimo Cooperative, adding that it’s a new opportunity to introduce Kinngait art to more people.

“This exhibition is a cross-section of approaches and generations, providing us with a dynamic snapshot of what’s happening in contemporary Inuit art.”

New Inuit Art is presented in partnership with Fundacja Kulury i Dziedzictwa and was made possible with support from the Canadian Embassy in Poland and the National Ethnographic Museum in Warsaw.

Nukik logo chosen Kivalliq Tracy Wallace won Nukik Corporation’s logo contest with an artistic rendering that displayed a renewable energy symbol, lightning bolt for energy on the other end and a fibre optic cable.

The colours matched the ones currently used by the Kivalliq Hydro-Fibre Link website.

Nukik Corporation is the partnership between Sakku Investments and the Kivalliq Inuit Association, tasked as the project developer for the hydro-fibre link.

The ‘nation-building’ project is planned to be a 1,200-kilometre, 150-megawatt high-voltage transmission line, providing power and internet to the Kivalliq region.

The project is forecast to cost $1.6 billion to build and provide internet upload speeds 10 times faster than currently available, with 30 times faster download speeds.

Second Covid-19 booster shot now available for those 50 and older Nunavut In response to the National Advisory Committee on Immunizations new recommendations,

Nunavut’s department of health has started offering a second booster shot (or fourth) dose of the Covid-19 vaccine to all Nunavummiut 50 years of age and older if they had their last shot at least four-and-a-half months ago.

First booster shots (or third doses) continue to remain available for all Nunavummiut ages five and up, most recently becoming available to immunocompromised children ages five to 11.

Masks remain mandatory in Nunavut’s health facilities and must be worn to vaccination appointments.

Boys team prepares to suit up for 2022 National Aboriginal Hockey Championship

The National Aboriginal Hockey Championships (NAHC) are back after two years of cancellations due to Covid-19 and that means Team North is also back.

The 2022 edition of the championships will be held in Membertou, N.S., next month and it’s just a boys team that will be making the trip this time. There will be no girls squad this year due to timing, according to Kyle Kugler, Hockey North’s executive director.

“We didn’t feel it would be realistic and the coaches made the decision to hold off for a year,” Kugler said. “The boys team asked to wait on making the decision for 2022 and they were able to get things together. Going forward, the goal is to have a girls team ready for the 2023 tournament.”

Ryan St. John of Arviat is the team’s manager for this year and he said putting everything together came down to the wire.

“It was an 11th-hour decision on whether we would have the team,” he said. “I jumped in to take on the role and put together the coaching staff, help select the team and try to get as much funding as we could to make it happen.”

Half of this year’s roster of 20 players will feature from the territory with the bulk coming from the Kivalliq region. David Clark of Rankin Inlet will be the head coach and he’ll be assisted

by Jamie Savikataaq of Iqaluit and Michael Tuton of Whitehorse.

Alyssa Ross of Inuvik, NWT will serve as the team’s trainer.

St. John said with the coaches and players in place, the job now is to tie up the loose ends as best as he can.

“We’re finalizing all of our travel arrangements, getting the logistics taken care of, making sure all of the proper paperwork is in,” he said.

“It should all come together in the next couple of weeks.”

When it came to picking who would be on the team, St. John said he received around 80 resumes from players all over the three territories.

He was impressed with what he saw.

“The first thing I noticed was the amount of kids playing AAA or AA down south,” he said. “A lot of kids are playing in the south now and so that made the decision easy on who to select from that. For the other spots, we looked at who from the North could best fill in those gaps we had and that was the tougher part of the final decision. I think we have a really competitive team and our goal is to go there and win some games.”

Having Team North return to the tournament was up in the air after the Aboriginal Sports Circle of the NWT, which had organized every facet of the outfit, announced in 2019 that it would no longer look after the day-to-day operations. The main reason was the cost; the budget for the 2019 championships was a little under $200,000, with no assistance from either Yukon or Nunavut.

Aaron Wells, the Aboriginal Sports Circle’s executive director, said he’s quite pleased to see Team North back in the saddle.

“We worked with Kyle on handing over the uniforms and the logo,” Wells said. “Kyle has been sitting in on the (NAHC) meeting calls and we worked with Ryan as well. I’m happy that there’s a Team North at that tournament and hopeful that we can build a relationship with those in charge of running the operation.”

There won’t be any training camp in the North before the team leaves, said St. John, but the boys will all meet in Winnipeg on May 3 for some team-building activities and a bit of on-ice work.

“We’ll just do the best we can in terms of getting the kids to come together,” he said. “After that, we fly into Halifax on May 6 and get ready for the tournament.”

The boys will kick things off in the very first game of the tournament against Saskatchewan on May 9 and St. John said he knows it will be a tough test right off of the bat.

“I’ve had a look at Saskatchewan’s roster and they have a very formidable team, lots of kids playing AAA and junior,” he said.

“That’s the advantage those types of teams have — a bigger pool of Indigenous kids to pick from but we have a lot of kids who have played down south as well. Twelve of our kids have that experience at an elite level and I’m hoping more of our kids from the North can get that chance to play in the south. It’s going to make them better players and give them a better chance to follow their dreams.”

Leave it to Toronto Blue Jays fans to show us how it’s done.

Opening day at Rogers Centre (SkyDome because it’s still the Dome!) on April 8 was eventful in the 500 Level, which is another way of saying it’s Tuesday in downtown Toronto, so three cheers for the fireballers in the value-priced seats. Anyway, a couple apparently rubbed some of the bleacher creatures the wrong way and that was enough for security to come up and check it out. It escalated to Toronto Police heading up the stairs to get involved and that’s where the fun began.

As the dastardly duo was being led down and out of the building, the male half appears

to push the female half down a couple of steps. The female, thinking it was the cop, decided to turn around and slug the officer.

Yeah, we know how that ended.

As an old colleague once told me: stay off the booze and out of the news. Obviously, these two looked as if they had been saucing it for most of the evening and the woman, who’s been identified as a 27-year-old but no name, was carted away with two new bracelets.

Capacity restrictions were still in place at the Agnico Eagle Arena, but the Hometown Hockey tournament to end the season in Rankin Inlet showed a flash of the hockey-crazy culture that the community has been missing through the pandemic.

“It’s nice to see hockey back in Rankin Inlet, because this is a hockey town,” said Sidney Nichol, who played for the A-Division-winning Team Aliyak in the weekend tournament that wrapped up April 3.

“The games were all very close. Teams were all even. That’s what makes it fun.”

Team Aliyak faced off against Team Kusugak in the finals, with the game tied 2-2 heading into the 3rd period.

A clutch hattrick from Tisten Dias helped propel Aliyak to a 5-3 lead late in the game, when Kusugak brought it back within one with a powerplay goal. Despite the final press, Aliyak held on to win 5-4.

“He was our locker room MVP,” said Nichol about Dias, adding that goalie Ethan Makpah shut the door as well.

In the B Division, Team Karetak beat Team Misheralak in the finals.

“The B side had some really close games,” said Nichol. “It’s nice to see a bunch of older guys playing with a bunch of kids.”

One line on the B side had a combined age of 172 years, he added.

Nichol was glad to see the hockey season end with a bang after all the Covid restrictions.

“Rankin’s got a lot of good organizers,” he said, saying the tournament was run well. “It allows us to do these kind of things.”

Seven players from Rankin Inlet and five from Iqaluit play on national stage

Seven players from Rankin Inlet are joining five from Iqaluit in the 2022 Canadian futsal championships in Gatineau, Quebec this month.

They’re going to be facing some stiff competition in the south. The pandemic has cancelled the last two events, but in 2019, the Rankin Inlet team was outscored 75-12 in four games.

“Passing is probably the most important skill down there and positioning offensively,” said Paulusie Nakoolak, one of the players headed south.

“The teams we challenged (last time), they made us exhausted from all their good passing. We thought it was their endurance but they were the ones making us run instead.”

He and other Rankin Inlet players have been practising regularly this winter. In addition to Paulusie, the Rankin Inlet players headed south are Chad Graham, Airo King, Kris Okpatauya, Jeffrey Niviatsiak, Allen Curley and Nolan Sammurtok.

Futsal is slightly different from soccer, explained Nakoolak. Futsal is played on an indoor court with no walls and uses a low-bounce ball.

“We have four new players I believe that still don’t know the rules,” said Nakoolak. “We’re going to have to explain it to them before we go down there.”

Without setting his sights too high, Nakoolak is hoping the Nunavut team can make progress by competing with teams from the Yukon and Manitoba this time.

“I’m just focused on the teams that we’re trying to beat right now and try to get some sweat in, get my legs going,” he said. “Besides that, we want to have fun too and we hope we keep doing this every year with different generations and try to go higher.”

He would like to see more people get into futsal and soccer, and he encourages people to jump at opportunities to play and go to tournaments.
