Two Nunavummiut receive Order of Canada Veteran administrators and negotiators awarded honour

Two Nunavummiut were honoured with induction to the Order of Canada during a Dec. 29 ceremony, where Canada’s Governor General Mary Simon announced 135 appointments to the order.

Kugluktuk’s Asger Rye ‘Red’ Pedersen was recognized for his contributions to the growth and development of public government in Canada’s North.

Born in 1935, Pedersen said he has seen significant change take place in the North over the his many years as the area administrator for Kugluktuk, Pangnirtung and Behchoko, NWT. “The North has gone from traditional fur trading economy where people in Nunavut still lived in snow houses and built dog teams to hunt,” said Pedersen, to what it is now.

“Inuit have gone from the stone age to the space age in one generation,” he adds.

Cambridge Bay’s Charlie Kakotok Evalik was also awarded the Order for his leadership as a chief

negotiator in the Nunavut Agreement and architect of social and economic development in Nunavut.

“I’m particularly pleased to be inducted into the Order at the same time as Charlie Evalik from Cambridge Bay, who I knew since he was born,” said Pedersen.

Millie Evalik, Charlie’s wife, added her pride in her husband’s achievement, congratulating him “on this great and humbling honour to recognize all the tireless work, effort and determination it took to further the causes of our Inuit people and Nunavut as a whole.”

Created in 1967, the Order of Canada is a way for Canada to honour people who make significant contributions to the nation. The Order’s motto, Desiderantes Meliorem Patriam means “they desire a better country.”

“Each of you has made an outstanding contribution to Canada’s well-being through your achievements, accomplishments and discoveries,” said Simon, in a video message announcing the new appointees.

“Enjoy this moment with your loved ones, who have supported you along the way.”

Arviat hunter loses hands to frostbite after surviving five-day blizzard ‘I can’t wait to see my steel arms so I can go hunting again when I get back home,’ says Ernie Eetak

He lost both hands to frostbite after breaking down on the land during a hunting trip outside of Arviat, but Ernie Kiinaalik Eetak is all smiles and laughs as he prepares to return home and resume hunting.

“I can’t wait to see my steel arms so I can go hunting again when I get back home,” said Eetak from a Winnipeg hotel.

Both hands were amputated. Eetak will be getting prosthetics with a hook to retain some functionality of his arms.

He went caribou hunting for what was supposed to be just one day early in December. He was about 48 km from Arviat when he lost track of a group of caribou he was following.

“It was getting dark so fast,” said Eetak. “I went back home and saw Arviat’s lights, and my snowmobile stopped.”

He searched his equipment and found a new sparkplug, which let him drive a bit longer, but his machine broke down again outside of town.

Tired from a day of hunting, he walked from his snowmobile toward Arviat and took a rest by a rock. After falling asleep, he woke up to an angry wolverine. He quickly grabbed his lighter and looked for his foot trail back to his snowmobile, but the weather had changed.

“It was really windy, about 100 miles per hour, like a blizzard,” he said.

He initially tried to build an iglu, but his caribou mitts flew off in the wind.

Eetak propped up his snowmobile and used his tarp for protection from the elements.

“I died for five days because of the bad weather,” he said, remembering his brutally long experience hunkering down next to his snowmobile and under his tarp. “Negative 50, so cold.”

His hands froze, sticking to the tarp.

At one point, he remembered bright lights filling his vision, and he could hear gospel songs, “like somebody singing on the sky and somebody carrying me and wearing all white,” he said. “I went back to my life. I had a big breath.”

Finally, the weather cleared and the sun came out.

He credited his traditional caribou-skin clothing and Inuit sunglasses for keeping him alive. On the way to town, he was found by a rescue team and taken to the health centre.

“I was so happy that day,” said Eetak. “The traditional clothes I wear survived me.”

His right eye had been damaged by ice and his hands were severely frostbitten. He was eventually medevaced to Winnipeg, where both hands were surgically removed.

Eetak, who will turn 42 this month, said he’s still going hunting again when he gets back home to Arviat.

He has lived a life of hunting and sharing country food with the community, and he looks forward to continuing that tradition, even without hands.

He was thankful for his wife, Angeline, who supported him through his recovery.

Next time, he said, he will be sure to bring a GPS device, extra gas, a Coleman stove, warmer tent, more clothing and as many tools as he can carry, just in case.

NTI facing logistical challenges in two regional hubs delivering isolation kits More than 1,000 requests for kits flood in during current outbreak; Nunavummiut say help is appreciated

Nunavut Tunngavik Incorporated (NTI) is continuing to provide isolation kits to Inuit beneficiaries diagnosed with Covid-19 who are required to isolate. This is meant to help support Inuit families who are taking part in a full 14-day isolation.

Unlike other outbreaks, NTI is facing a larger demand now more than ever for its isolation kits, says David Kunuk, acting COO (Chief Operating Officer) of NTI. The contents of an isolation kit will depend on the information provided, such as numbers of adults and children in a home, dietary needs and infant-specific essentials. For most communities these isolation kits will be sourced from local grocery stores, as well as the local Northern/NorthMart and Co-op buildings.

Only one household member can apply for an isolation kit at a time.

“We have utilized local stores as well where it was possible, said Kunuk, “it was based on different approaches depending on who’s available.”

For Inuit outside of Nunavut and in communities with no active confirmed cases of Covid-19, a signature will be required from your healthcare provider.

In communities with active Covid no signature is needed.

“We have had to find other sources to deliver,” Kunuk said, adding they have seen over a thousand applications come through over the phone and via email since this current outbreak started.

111 dogs sent south for rescue in 2021

Though they’re no longer being destroyed when caught by bylaw, Rankin Inlet’s dogs still deserve proper care from owners.

“We do have a lot of dogs here that I would say are somewhat neglected, that live their lives on the end of chains,” said Mark Wyatt, director of protective services with the hamlet.

When they get loose, bylaw catches them and keeps them in one of two pounds in the community - one outside for bigger dogs that can handle the low temperatures, and a heated indoor pound for smaller dogs.

The indoor holding area was built in the fall using a seacan, framed, insulated and sheeted with plywood and is kept warm by circulating air from the garage next door and supplemented with an infrared heater. The outdoor pen has shelters and space for six dogs at any given time.

Wyatt will usually post the dogs on Facebook or try to contact the owners by another means.

“There are a lot of good dog owners in town,” he said, adding that he tries to reunite dogs with their owners and provide education on making sure their pets don’t get loose.

In the recent past there was little alternative for the dogs whose owners don’t come to collect them – those animals would be shot. The hamlet used to destroy about 150 dogs per year because of this, roughly one every other day.

“It’s the standard practice in a lot of different communities,” said Wyatt.

“Stray dogs are generally tied up for a couple days and then if the owners don’t claim them, they’re just shot.”

Since Wyatt took over in 2017, abandoned dogs are now rehomed in the south, at no cost to the hamlet, thanks to connections he’s made and fundraising efforts.

Bylaw works closely with Kangiqliniq Sapy, Neuter and Rescue, an organization run by Wyatt and Page Burt. The group raises funds to run spay and neuter

clinics and provide some veterinarian services.

The group also gives aid to a rescue group in Baker Lake run by Andrea Robinson, helping get dogs from the community vaccinated and with the occasional rescue that finds itself overnighting in Rankin.

In 2021, 111 Rankin Inlet dogs were sent south. In the first week of 2022, another four were destined for lower parallels. Bylaw is currently raising two puppies until they’re old enough to be sent out - the other nine in the litter had frozen to death.

“They all go south, they all get new homes,” said Wyatt, except for aggressive dogs, which still get destroyed.

Bylaw also provides vaccination for dogs it captures, as well as for dogs owners bring in.

Many communities in the territory have been seeing a rise in foxes lately, including Rankin Inlet. Rabid foxes tend to either be aggressive or super friendly, said Wyatt, but either way deadly to unvaccinated dogs.

Confirmatory testing reduced as healthcare system struggles to keep up

Effective immediately, confirmatory testing for Covid-19 will now only be done to validate that Covid-19 is present in communities reporting a first case and in higher-risk settings, such as Elders homes, and other congregated facilities, such as critical service areas, Nunavut’s Health Minister John Main announced Jan. 6.

“As Covid-19 cases rise across Nunavut, we must make necessary changes to protect the continuity of health services across the territory,” said John Main.

With the return of holiday travellers from the south, Main fully expects Covid-19 will be in “all our communities” over the next month.

“With that in mind, and recognizing there is a staffing shortage, we must manage our resources to balance Covid-19 response with Nunavummiut’s access to other essential health-care services,” said the minister.

Once Covid-19 is in a home — determined by the appearance of symptoms — all members of the household with symptoms will be assumed to be Covid-19 positive and testing will not be required, although rapid tests may be an option. In these cases, a household will be cleared of active Covid-19 and eligible to come out of isolation once everyone in the home has been asymptomatic for two to three days.

“This necessary change will reduce the risk that our health system will be overwhelmed, which will put Nunavummiut with other health conditions

at risk. We have seen how fast Omicron spreads and it is essential that all Nunavummiut follow public health measures and isolate when told to. It is everyone’s responsibility to protect our communities,” said Nunavut’s chief public health officer, Dr. Michael Patterson.

“If the volumne of Covid tests continued to increse as it has in the last two weeks, something had to give,” he said.

Further travel restrictions introduced Kinngait had six confirmed coronavirus infections as of Jan. 4– that number jumped to 23 by Jan. 6, according to Patterson.

“The new cases indicate a high risk of community transmission in Cambridge Bay and Kinngait, which cannot be ignored,” Patterson said. “These travel restrictions are necessary to reduce the risk of the virus spreading to other communities.”

In total, 244 active Covid-19 cases have been registered across the territory. Iqaluit has had the highest number, peaking at 86 cases and currently reporting 72 active cases. There are 48 in Arviat, 45 in Rankin Inlet, 20 in Pangnirtung, 18 in Iglulik, 17 in Sanirajak, six in Qikiqtarjuaq, two in Chesterfield Inlet and one each confirmed in Baker Lake, Cambridge Bay and Pond Inlet. There is also a presumptive case in Sanikiluaq.

The majority of these cases have been identified as the Omicron variant.

On Jan. 6 there were eight further recoveries announced, making for a total of 24 recoveries thus far.

There have been six hospitalizations from Covid19 in the course of this outbreak.

Requests for personal protective equipment and rapid antigen tests have been made to the federal government, said Nunavut Premier P.J. Akeeagok, a shipment of the latter is expected to arrive within the “next few days,” he said, with enough tests for four per person. These will be available at gateway airports such as Edmonton, Winnipeg, Ottawa, Yellowknife, Sanikiluaq, Rankin Inlet and Iqaluit.

Travellers are to take the tests on days 6 and 14 of their isolation.

A negative Covid-19 test does not replace a 14day isolation.

The Department of Health has procured 250,000 to 300,000 masks which will be given out to communities, which will be sent directly to the hamlets when it arrives.

Government asking for daycares to reopen for critical workers Premier Akeeagok is also asking for Nunavut’s daycares to reopen, as people who still have to go to work are facing an “unsustainable” problem with managing kids and work.

“I am asking that you reopen your doors to help keep our critical services operational. Our healthcare workers, store employees, water and waste management workers must go above and beyond to help our territory during this severe wave of Covid-19. Many of these critical services are close to the breaking point. Staff are exhausted, balancing work as well as childcare,” said Akeeagok.

Minister of Education and Deputy Premier Pamela Gross will be spearheading the effort to help provide daycare facilities with incentives

to open their doors.

Non-critical workers to work at home Human resources minister Adam Lightstone has also given an update for Government of Nunavut employees.

Effective Jan. 4 to 17, the Government of Nunavut has transitioned to a work-from-home protocol. All public servants, including essential service positions are encouraged to work from home if possible.

Workers are to only go to the workplace if required to do so and those workplaces are to keep staff numbers minimal.

“Government of Nunavut employees are encouraged to contact their supervisors to determine if they are critically essential and attendance is required at the workplace, or if they are essential and can work from home,” said Lightstone.

To help with this transition, the GN will be assisting with laptops, internet access, remote access to work emails, video conferencing, access to shared network drives and other software applications.

Travel restrictions have been added for Kinngait and Cambridge Bay as of Jan. 4 due to the spread of Covid-19.

Travel restrictions also remain in place for Arviat, Iglulik, Iqaluit, Pangnirtung, Rankin Inlet and Sanirajak. Only residents of those communities and those fulfilling an essential purpose are permitted to enter. Travel between any Nunavut communities is discouraged at this time, according to the Department of Health.

Other strict Nuanvut-wide public health measures will remain in place until at least Jan. 17.

Cambridge Bay high school bids farewell to longtime teacher ‘We’re not leaving just because I’m done teaching,’ says educator Patti Bligh

As classes resume at Kiilinik High School in Cambridge Bay, something is different.

Patti Bligh, a pillar of the Kitikmeot education community for more than two decades, is no longer there. She has retired from the profession, taking a job in Yellowknife on a one-year term as Northern studies and social studies co-ordinator with the Government of the Northwest Territories. She said it will allow her to embrace her “history geek” side and spend more time with her daughter, who lives in the NWT capital.

Bligh and her husband, Gordon, came to Cambridge Bay in July 1998, after Gordon accepted a position with the Royal Bank. The plan was to stay for 18 months.

Patti, who hails from Saskatchewan, was preparing to start her first full-time teaching gig back then, but the high school burned down that summer.

A scramble ensued to offer classes from the new Nunavut Arctic College community learning centre, among other buildings.

“You learned very quickly to be flexible,” she recalled, adding that the emphasis was on making the entire community the school, including the outdoors. “It was exciting and interesting and challenging.

“It changes how you teach … I would have said that’s probably the richest way to teach in the North, is the community is the campus,” she said.

A combination of creeping “southern legalities” over the years and, particularly, the emergence of Covid-19 since 2020 has put much greater limitations on how lessons are taught. Many classes have moved online and use more technology.

“It is a learning curve for me,” she admitted. “It’s time for me to not be teaching.”

She added that she yearns to see more continuity among educators, less turnover. For that reason, she fought to get the Nunavut Teacher Education Program back in Cambridge Bay.

She also encourages more parental support for their children’s education.

“We need to move that up a notch,” she said. “The kids’ success at school comes from the teachers but is driven by the parents.”

Patti said she has no regrets about staying in Cambridge Bay, which she has found “very welcoming,” and her three children went through the school system there, getting a quality education. She also acted as a foster parent to close to 40 children over the years.

“Cambridge Bay is home for us. We’re not leaving just because I’m done teaching,” she said.

It quickly became clear that the admiration for her dedication was widespread as word of her pending retirement spread prior to Christmas and words of praise spilled over social media.

“I have been overwhelmed by how kind people are. I am very confident that there are people who are not saying anything (negative), and I appreciate that too,” she said, laughing. “If everybody loves you, I don’t think you’re a good teacher. You’re somebody that created a world that was having them live in false illusions.”

Students know her for her penchant for poetry and her love of history, which saw her chaperone six school trips overseas to Second World War battlegrounds where Canadian soldiers fought.

Mia Otokiak was one of Patti’s students, and the relationship has grown far beyond teacher and pupil as Otokiak reached adulthood.

“I met Patti because her daughter (Siobhan) and I are the same age and we met in Grade 1. Since then Patti has been a second mother to me. Even my mother calls her my second mom,” said Otokiak.

“She has done so much for me, from teaching me my manners, to getting me into so many amazing programs all over Canada; to not only helping me realize how important school is, but helping me get through and graduate high school.”

Patti was also involved in many extra-curricular activities such as curling and Beavers. Otokiak referred to her as a “non-stop volunteer.”

“I could write a whole book about how much Patti has amazingly influenced my life,” she said. “I’d just like to add that Patti is an amazing teacher, mother and friend. I love her so much and truly can’t thank her enough for all she’s done for me.”

Charges laid in Iqaluit break and enters, liquor thefts One man faces 17 criminal accusations; two others also arrested

After a month-long investigation, Iqaluit RCMP made three arrests related to several break and enters where large amounts of alcohol were stolen between Nov. 22 to Dec. 4, resulting in

the theft of almost 700 litres of liquor.

Aaron Akulukjuk, 39, was arrested and charged with 17 offences, including three break and enters to a business, theft over $5,000, theft under $2,000, three failures to comply with probation orders, three charges of uttering threats, a theft of a motor vehicle and being unlawfully in a dwelling. He is being kept in jail and will return to court on Jan. 25.

A second man, unnamed by the RCMP, was charged with one count of break and enter to a business, one theft under $5,000, possession of a break-in instrument and mischief. His first court appearance will be Feb. 24.

The third man arrested, also unidentified by the police, is facing one count of break and enter to a business and one count of theft under $5,000. He is scheduled to appear in court on March 10.

Quana to all the volunteers who have made it possible to enjoy as much as possible holidays events. Finally, a big, big Quana also goes out to our municipal services operators who continually deliver water and sewage services, even in the cold weather, and also to our Housing Association maintenance workers who go out after hours to help tenants who have no heat, frozen pipes and more. ‘Visionary leader and patriarch’ Bill Lyall memorialized Cambridge Bay resident championed Co-ops, served as MLA and had a passion for fishing

Tributes are pouring in from across Nunavut, the Northwest Territories and elsewhere in Canada for business leader Bill Lyall, who died on Dec. 28.

“His passion for the Co-op will be kind of hard to emulate,” said Charlie Lyall, Bill’s younger brother, who also reflected on Bill’s love of fishing and his eagerness to assist others.

“He helped out lots. For example, when somebody died in the community, he was the first one to bring food and such,” Charlie said.

Bill ran a seasonal fishing lodge, B and J Flyfishing Adventures, located about 80 kilometres west of Cambridge Bay. “You couldn’t find a better man to operate it,” Charlie said, adding that his brother also enjoyed playing cribbage.

In 1975, Bill was elected as MLA for the Central Arctic, serving in the 8th NWT Legislative Assembly prior to Nunavut becoming a separate territory.

A few years later, having already served on the Co-op board of directors, he began his pivotal tenure as president of the Ikaluktutiak Co-op in Cambridge Bay. Shortly thereafter, he became founding president of Arctic Co-operatives Limited. He devoted more than 40 years of his life to the Co-op movement, retiring in 2019. During that period, the Co-op expanded, ultimately reaching 32 communities in Nunavut, the NWT and Yukon.

Bill published a book touting the benefits of the Co-op in 2014.

It was titled Helping Ourselves by Helping Each Other: The Life Story of William Lyall.

In paying homage to the Co-op champion, Arctic Co-operatives described him as a “visionary leader and patriarch.”

“Through Bill’s work, dedication and vision the people of the North have developed, using the Co-operative model, the strongest and most diverse group of aboriginal-owned businesses in Canada. We will always be extremely grateful for the leadership that Bill provided Arctic Co-ops and the Co-op System,” Arctic Co-operatives stated.

The Kitikmeot Inuit Association (KIA) also eulogized Bill, offering condolences to his wife Jessie in the process.

“We will all miss his passion for the outdoors and fishing, and we know that he is now resting in peace as he had to deal with the sickness of cancer over the past while,” KIA President Stanley Anablak stated.

Charlie Lyall has long been a key role-player in economic development with the KIA. Like Bill and Charlie, brothers Dennis and Pat Lyall were also business-oriented.

“We like to see Inuit get ahead, and private enterprise is the way to do it,” Charlie said of the brothers’ drive to expand enterprise throughout the Kitikmeot and the North.

Duane Wilson, vice-president of stakeholder relations at Arctic Co-operatives Limited, said Bill’s words and approach left a lasting impression on him.

“I heard Bill speak on a number of occasions and he spoke about how co-operation was the way that Inuit survived for centuries on the land so there was a natural alignment between Inuit societal values and co-operative business,” said Wilson.

“That sentiment, plus the obvious pride in the amount of assets and equity that Co-op members had retained in the North, always resonated with me.”

Toy drive brings joy in Rankin More than 500 gifts distributed before Christmas

More than 500 toys found their way into children’s hands in Rankin Inlet, thanks to a Christmas toy drive initiative organized

by Leonie Sammurtok.

Sammurtok had revived the toy drive this year after organizing her last one in 2018.

The initiative received a boost of $10,000 funding through the Agnico Eagle Charity Ball program, which handed out cash to non-profit and community organizations

in December.

Kevin Lagacé was on hand to play Santa Claus and pose for pictures with children who received gifts.

Iqaluit ushered in 2022 with style, as fireworks were lit at Hospital Hill in the evening and midnight. Iqalummiut gathered around the city to watch the night sky light up.

The event was sponsored by Iqaluit Community Events, Arctic Co-Op and the City of Iqaluit.

In Rankin Inlet, fire chief Mark Wyatt challenged residents to post their best photos from the fireworks and vehicle parade. The most-liked photos earned gift card prizes.

Aggressive fox spurs another warning

Sanikiluaq An aggressive fox has prompted a warning to Sanikiluaq residents about the animals and the potential for rabies.

The Department of Health issued the advisory on Wednesday afternoon, asking residents to be vigilant in regards to foxes.

Anyone who has been scratched or bitten by a fox or a dog is encouraged to go to the health centre and report the incident.

Because rabies infections can be fatal, seeking treatment quickly is vital.

The Department of Health also urged people to closely monitor dogs that are tied up outdoors. A change in behaviour could be a sign of rabies. Watch for frothing at the mouth, choking or making strange noises, or other strange behaviour.

If this occurs, avoid the animal and contact the regional environmental health office or conservation officer.

Sightings of foxes or wolves should also be reported at 867645-6660 or 867-226-8098.

Rabid foxes have been confirmed in Iqaluit and Iglulik and suspected in Baker Lake and Arctic bay over the past several weeks.

Elders at Ottawa seniors home test positive for Covid-19

Ottawa/Nunavut Five Elders at the Embassy West seniors home in Ottawa have been diagnosed with Covid-19, a development that Nunavut

Health Minister John Main says makes him “very concerned.”

“This is the first outbreak the facility has had in its resident population since the pandemic began, and we are monitoring and supporting our Elders,” said Main. “To ensure our Elders receive the best possible care and support, my department has sent a bilingual staff member to Embassy West, to help with communications and response efforts. There have also been added provisions to allow family members to assist with caregiving, under strict Covid-19 safety protocols.”

Regular updates will be provided to the Nunavut Department of Health and the minister’s office, according to Main.

“I want to let the Elders and families know that my heart is with them during this difficult time and assure all Nunavummiut that we are doing everything we can to support our Elders,” he said. “While these cases are not captured under Nunavut’s official Covid-19 case count, we will continue to closely monitor and report on our Elders receiving care outside of the territory.”

Nunavut Arctic College Kitikmeot campus building officially opened

Ikaluktutiak/Cambridge Bay While in Cambridge Bay for a caucus retreat during the week of Dec. 6, members of the Nunavut Legislative Assembly participated in an official opening ceremony for the new $19.2-million Nunavut Arctic College Kitikmeot campus building.

The 15,800-square-foot facility contains six classrooms, four of which can accommodate 15 students while the other two can fit up to 12 students.

There’s also a multipurpose space that can be partitioned to host classes or meetings of up to 50 people.

Construction began in May 2019 and the building was in use by April 2021.

Stantec/Illutsataarvik was the contractor for the project.

None injured in New Year’s Day fire

Qamanittuaq/Baker Lake A house fire in a single-family residence on New Year’s Day in Baker Lake thankfully left none injured.

“We got the call Jan. 1 at 7:30 p.m,” said Deputy Fire Chief Inukpak.

“When we arrived to the residence, there was smoke coming out of the main entrance and fire in the bedroom window. We started suppression, and the neighbours were telling us the homeowner wasn’t home, so luckily the house was empty at the time.”

The fire was limited to one room and its contents, but smoke damage was left throughout the building.

“It can be repaired,” said Inukpak, adding it would be up to the building owner about how to deal with the damage.

He said the cause of the fire is still under investigation, but he wouldn’t say it was suspicious.

Christmas games spread holiday spirit

Everything was looking clear for a backto-normal Christmas in Rankin Inlet, until Covid-19 re-emerged two days before Christmas and the community was swept into lockdown again.

“Once we heard about the Covid, the whole town, it felt like Christmas is over,” said Wesley Innukshuk.

Along with gatherings being banned as of Dec. 23, Christmas games were looking to be cancelled just before they began.

Hamlet council, senior staff and Innukshuk met to discuss hosting games on Facebook instead.

“We were like ‘Aw, it’s not going to be the same, it’s not like people gathering,’” said Innukshuk.

But they went ahead anyway, and the response was thunderous.

“It turned out really awesome,” said Innukshuk. “People enjoyed it and our Christmas spirit lifted again. I’m getting phone calls to my home saying you’re doing great, don’t stop.”

Social media games centred on challenges for community members, such as putting on half-man, half-woman makeup, jigging or taping your face to look silly. The posts with the most reactions won cash prizes.

Hundreds of people submitted photos and videos of themselves competing, and hundreds more reacted to each post. Everyone from children to Elders participated, often having fun at their own expense.

“The games are fun to watch,” said Innukshuk, who was thrilled with just how many people participated. “Doing the demonstrating was the shy part.”

His favourite game was a challenge for people to dance to the song Gangnam Style, which he had to demonstrate first.

As cases of Covid continued to rise in the community, he said people were worried about the virus, and so were he and his wife, who helped run the games. But the sacrifice of arranging the games and getting prizes to the winners was worth it.

“It’s what me and my wife love to do, let the community have a great time during Christmas events,” he said.

Innukshuk hopes 2022 is finally a better year.

“This 2021, I’m saying it’s the hardest year for everyone all over the globe,” he said.

“I said to my wife, the year 2022 looks so sexy. I hope it’s a good year for everyone.”

Interest and competition high among Baker Lake students

Players were gathered all around but everything was quiet while finals matches were played, except for the smacks of the ping pong ball and rackets.

“All the other athletes who are watching were respectfully being quiet but then when the matches would be over there would be an eruption of cheering for whoever won,” said Jonah Amitnaaq Secondary School teacher Isaiah Lansdowne, who coaches table tennis and helped organize a weekend tournament for students in Baker Lake just before Christmas.

“The tension was quite intense during the matches.”

Seventeen players competed in four categories between juvenile and junior age groups. Each category came with three cash prizes for the top players, and everyone who attended for both days of the tournament received a gift certificate. A round robin on Saturday led to finals on Sunday, where top players were put in the spotlight.

“Rather than having players play at multiple tables at the same time, we had one centre table where we had each of the finals and everybody was around the outside watching, which was pretty neat, especially for the younger ones having the older ones watching them,” said Lansdowne.

Orlando Kalluk won the junior boys category, while Laura Pupik-Highson took top spot for the junior girls. Tegan Tunnuq came out on top for the juvenile boys, with Jayna Kingunkotok

winning the juvenile girls division.

“They’re incredible,” said Lansdowne about the players and their skill level. “They’ll be wailing it really hard, having some heavy topspin to bring the ball down to hit the table instead of going out, and then you think the point’s over and the other player gets on defense, gets it back and they’re just moving all over.”

His players practise twice a week at the school, Mondays and Wednesdays. Some have competed in other communities, “and it’s definitely a serious thing,” said Lansdowne.

Hand-eye co-ordination tends to be a natural gift, but players can still work on it, added the teacher. Practices serve more to keep athletes on their toes and learn to make the quick movements necessary to keep rallies going.

The uncertainty around Covid-19 means Lansdowne is unsure if any tournament travel is in the students’ future this year, but either way, he is planning another tournament at the school for March.

“We’re hoping that we’re going to be able to travel more next school year and be able to compete with other communities,” he said. “Regardless, we’ll be back at it and plug away and see where we’re at the next tournament.”

Just from the round robin on Saturday to the finals on Sunday, he saw substantial improvement in some players, especially among the juveniles.

“It was great seeing excellent sportsmanship,” added Lansdowne. “We didn’t have any disagreements or issues. The kids were all being respectful to one another. We just got to enjoy it and they got to enjoy it. It was a great experience.”
