Dog slaughter, financial support and vaccines among topics raised at first ever Qimuksiqtiit gathering

The Qikiqtani Inuit Association (QIA) welcomed dog teamers from across Qikiqtani at the first ever Qimuksiqtiit Regional Gathering, which took place in Iqaluit from Nov. 16 to 18.

From the high Arctic to south Baffin, Inuit dog mushers gathered at the Frobisher Inn to discuss bringing dog teaming back to the territory after facing numerous hardships over the past seven decades.

One of the more notable of the topics raised early on were the dog slaughters of the 1950s to the 1970s, in which the RCMP killed hundreds of sled dogs in the eastern Arctic in order to force Inuit into the communities they largely live in today.

That was the first order of the day for Qimuksiqtiit Gathering, said QIA’s director of social policy, Hagar Idlout-Sudlovenick.

“Every community, it always comes up. We wanted to address that right away, to get it dealt with so we can move on to less heavier topics and look more into the future. Dog teaming, what that is going to look like,” said Idlout-Sudlovenick.“We want to know the best way we can help dog team owners.”

Mental health supports provided by Tukisigiarvik for dog teamers were available says Inukshuk Aksalnik, the Qikiqtani Truth Commission (QTC) implementation and programs manager, given many are still around to remember the dog slaughter.

“It’s a lived experience, it’s a lived memory, it wasn’t that long ago that dogs were killed,” said Aksalnik.

The Qimmiit Revitalization program under the QTC was also launched as another part of the effort to bring back dog teams to the territory. Originally started to financially support teams during the Nunavut Quest, Covid-19 has forced QIA to direct these funds to the dog teams themselves.

While the support has significantly helped Qikiqtani dog teams, the cost of living in Nunavut has led QIA to look into increasing the support they give to dog teamers, something that was made

clear by those attending Qimuksiqtiit.

“The overall messaging I heard was the Qimuksiqtiit project that we have, the $3,000 grant we have for dog teamers is super-helpful, but it’s not enough. A bag of kibble in Arctic Bay is close to $200, if you have a team of 16 (dogs), then that can add up very quickly,” said Aksalnik, so increasing the amount of money the grant gives out is definitely an option looking forward, she adds.

In areas where there are more seals available, there was discussion on possibly supporting hunters for a more readily available supply of dog food in communities which feed their dogs country food instead of kibble.

“If it’s working then why change it? Some communities have a lot more seals so they can work with local hunters, others may not have as big a seal population,” Idlout-Sudlovenick said, saying they could work with each community to see what works best for them.

Vaccine support for dogs was another topic dog teamers were also interested in getting, either through a travelling veterinarian program or by shipping the vaccines up directly to the teams, “there’s a need and a want for vaccine support,” said Aksalnik.

Revitalizing dog teaming in Nunavut is important to language revitalization as well, often connecting into the language, says Idlout-Sudlovenick.

“A lot of (the Inuktitut language) is connected to the environment. The cultural activities we do like (dog teaming), there’s different terms for everything … like for the harnesses. It’s not just about revitalizing dog teams but also connects with language and it also connects with culture,” said Idlout-Sudlovenick.

Another takeaway from Qimuksiqtiit was getting youth interested in becoming dog mushers.

“Elders are always open to teaching, the youth have to not be so shy and just go ask,” said Aksalnik.

While QIA doesn’t plan to make this an annual gathering they hope to keep hosting Qimuksiqtiit at least every two or three years. This first gathering, they say, has given a much more clear approach on how to help out Qikiqtani dog teams.

Rankin Inlet advocates rally on heels of Iqaluit suicide protest

How many times can you share your pain without making progress to heal?

That’s what Nunavummiut youth are asking themselves, their communities and the Government of Nunavut.

Upwards of 100 youth marched through Iqaluit demanding suicide prevention and mental health programs on Tuesday, Nov. 16.

A group of passionate teens organized the protest, after continued losses of their peers became unbearable.

“It’s an ongoing epidemic that we’ve been facing,” said Joseph Ashoona, one of the organizers. “We’re trying to put that to an end because we’ve lost too many lives to suicide. We’re all really hoping to make a change.”

The protest’s turnout was uplifting, added Ashoona.

“There were a lot of people who came together as one. The amount of support we had from the community, our friends and our family was unreal.”

Kim Canlas, another organizer, said the group ran a survey in the high school and middle school in Iqaluit asking students if they or friends experienced mental health issues. The majority of respondents affirmed that they did.

“That speaks about the disease going on here,” said Canlas.

Now the group wants to expand that survey to all schools in Nunavut, as well as getting mental health education in elementary-school classrooms.

“A lot of kids don’t really get exposure to this kind of issue at that age, because society perceives them as too little to learn about it,” said Canlas. “We hope that it’s going to be part of the curriculum now.”

Kivalliq contingent Rankin Inlet residents will be holding a rally of their own. The mental health movement was originally scheduled for Nov. 20, but was postponed due to weather. It is now scheduled for 2 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 28, in front of Turaarvik

Inns North.

“Mental health care in Nunavut is very poor,” said Meagan Akumalik Netser, one of the organizers of the Rankin Inlet rally.

“I’ve experienced it myself. Trying to speak with a mental health nurse is hard because the mental health nurses are always so transient.

There’s always a new one coming in. We have to re-tell our heartbreaking story over and over again. And the suicide rate in Nunavut is so high … I’m just tired of our people dying.”

Glenn Woodford, Kissarvik Co-op Retail Store Manager, knows how difficult dealing with mental health issues can be due to the transient aspect of support staff.

He said he doesn’t intend to criticize anyone and the job that health care staff do in Rankin Inlet is admirable, but he too felt let down after sharing his story with a nurse, only for that person to leave town.

When a new one comes in, “now you’ve got to start right from the beginning,” said Woodford, “and start over again because someone new wants to know you and try to help you. And their intention is admirable, their intention to help is real, but they don’t stay around long enough.

So that in itself is nothing but frustration to the patient. So why bother? And then there’s that feeling of let-down.”

Though the recent protest in Iqaluit was led by youth, Woodford knows these struggles affect people in all walks of life.

“I have a number of staff working with me, and I have to be professional,” he said. “But being professional and running a business doesn’t mean that I’m not human, because I am. And like everybody else, I feel pressure too. There are times I need help and I don’t mind saying that.”

When he saw Netser’s post on Facebook about the upcoming rally, he let her know the Co-op would support her cause. Netser said the Co-op is providing refreshments, coffee and space outside of Inns North for the demonstration.

“I thought, that’s awesome she’s doing that,” said Woodford, who afterwards found out one of his own staff was helping to organize the event, adding to his desire to support the cause.

Sammurtok suggested more activities beyond sports are needed, like sewing, beading carving and hunting. Providing more activities and outlets for people so they don’t turn to drugs or alcohol could help address the root problems, she said.

Amy Akumalik, another organizer, said the suicide rate in Nunavut is evidence that current mental health supports are not enough.

“We’ve lost five people to suicide in one year,” said Akumalik. “We had to bring awareness into government and show them that the mental health programs you’re providing us with are not working.”

Akumalik said there are options like a mental health hotline, but that’s not enough, especially when people are often not comfortable to share personal issues on the phone with a stranger.

Though Akumalik was happy with the turnout, the youth is not thrilled that these protests even have to happen.

“We shouldn’t have to do a protest every year to show the government that we need support and mental health programs,” said Akumalik, adding that stress can come in many forms, from lack of housing to food insecurity.

The Grade 11/12 teen left with a message to anyone reading this from a dark place: “There are people out there who love you, and there are people who care about you.”

Mary Simon opens 44th Parliament with Throne Speech ‘Already I have seen how Canadians are committed to reconciliation’

Canada’s first Inuk Governor-General Mary Simon has delivered her first speech from the throne, formally opening the 44th Parliament of Canada, speaking in Inuktitut, French and English. All the while a qulliq was lit alongside Simon.

One of the governor-general’s constitutional duties is to ensure Canada has a prime minister and to ensure the government in place has the confidence of the Parliament, the governor-general is also considered to be the British Queen’s representative in Canada.

“In each of your own ridings, I encourage you to seek out the truth and to learn about the lived realities in First Nations, Inuit and Metis communities. Although each community is distinct we all share a desire to chart a way forward together towards reconciliation,” said Simon in her speech.

With much of southern Canada realizing the number of unmarked graves of children found at former residential schools across the country, Simon urged a better path forward from past governments and institutions which placed those same children in those schools.

“They open deep wounds, despite the profound pain there is hope. Already I have seen how Canadians are committed to reconciliation,” Simon continued, “Non-Indigenous peoples are coming to understand and accept the true impact of the past.”

“Together,” with Indigenous people, she said, “they are walking the path toward reconciliation.”

Simon also acknowledged the hardships

Canadians went through during the Covid-19 pandemic.

“This year has been hard on all of us,” said Simon, “I want to thank all the workers across Canada, especially those in healthcare. For their efforts to keep us safe and healthy, and to offer my deepest condolences to those who have experienced loss of loved ones during the pandemic.”

She also praised the national response to the onset of the coronavirus, saying, “we adapted, we stayed true to our values. Values like compassion, courage and determination, values like democracy.”

Simon went on to add the Government of Canada is with the people of southern BC in this time of flooding.

“In a time of crisis, we know how Canadians respond, we step up and we are there for each other. The government will continue to be there for the people of British Columbia,” Simon said.

Prior to her first question of the session, Nunavut MP Lori Idlout applauded Simon delivering part of her speech in Inuktitut.

“First I wanted to say how incredible it was to hear a part of the throne speech delivered in Inuktitut,” said Idlout, “Canada is richer for it and my sincere congratulations to Her Excellency, Mary May Simon.”

Nunavut Premier P.J. Akeeagok welcomed the direction the governor-general gave in the speech.

“I was pleased to hear the emphasis on action on reconciliation, mental health, housing, infrastructure and affordable childcare,” said the Premier.

The matter of climate change was also raised in Simon’s speech, another priority for Nunavut’s

“Nunavut has a proud history of partnering with the Federal Government to address climate change, including work on the Tallurutiup Imanga National Marine Conservation Area,” the Premier added.

Pauktuutit: Inuit Women of Canada was also welcoming of Simon’s speech on the matters of reconciliation, climate change and gender equality. President Rebecca Kudloo is hopeful this government will follow through on implementing a plan to bring systemic change for

missing and murdered indigenous women, girls and 2SLGBTQQIA+ people.

“Inuit women’s voices and leadership must be at the forefront of this work for Inuit - at the national, regional and community levels,” said Kudloo.

The Pauktuutit president said they plan to meet with newly appointed cabinet ministers to share the organization’s recommendations on public policy, program areas which affect Inuit women girls and 2SLGBTQQIA+ people across Inuit Nunangat and the south.

Two teachers at Iqaluit’s Inuksuk High School have won the Prime Minister’s Awards for Teaching Excellence and Teaching Excellence in STEM (Science, technology, engineering and mathematics). Joey Rhodes and Mary Piercey-Lewis have been recognized for their efforts in teaching science and music respectively.

Piercey-Lewis is no stranger to awards this year, having won the 2021 MusiCounts Teacher of the Year award in June.

A teacher in Nunavut since 2001, she first started out in Arviat before moving to the territoral capital in 2008, where she currently teaches Inuksuk High School’s music program.

She published her first textbook in 2016, helping collect Inuit music for Inuit Inngiusingit: A Collection of Inuit Choral Music.

“We were both shocked and excited,” said Piercey-Lewis.

While being a teacher is a lot of work, she says it never quite feels like work when she’s in her element.

“I totally love my job, I do get up in the morning excited for what I’m going to be doing. I keep planning all those gigs and performances for the kids, there’s always excitement about getting into school, knowing what we need to work on and then working with the kids so they can also get excited about doing a great performance and sharing music, usually it’s in Inuktitut, or it’s drum dancing or throat-singing and sharing culture as well.”

For nearly two decades Rhodes has worked in various positions involving education. He was secretary treasurer for the Central Qikiqtani Regional Executive branch of the Nunavut Teacher’s Association, local union representative

for Inuksuk High School and is currently the vice-president of the Teacher’s Association.

Rhodes was a founding member of the Nunavut Science Educators Committee in 2015, co-ordinated the high school’s annual science fair, all the while serving as the department head for the science and math departments.

In his classroom you can find a boa constrictor, two geckos and a robotics shop, helping keep students engaged in the educational setting.

Rhodes says he was surprised and honoured to be recognized with the award.

“Teachers have a hard time knowing if they actually have an impact on a lot of students. It’s rare to get that student feedback years down the road, anytime you get something that was recognized by somebody it’s definitely a rewarding feeling,” he said.

He said while there have been ups and downs like any other job, “there’s never been a day where I thought, this is it I’m done with teaching, never, there’s never been a difficult day like that.”

“Joey goes above and beyond a regular teacher,” said Piercey-Lewis. “He’s one of those teachers that really has a lot of hands-on science and math for his kids, you can see his kids are really excited about learning that way.

“It takes a special kind of teacher to spark that curiosity and to get them all engaged in a fun but yet learning way,” she added.

The Prime Minister’s Award for Teaching Excellence has been recognizing teachers in various disciplines since 1994 for helping their students receive the best education they can. The Teaching Excellence in STEM award is given out to teachers who help foster an innovative culture to help Canada move toward the future.

Most of these items were already goals of the previous assembly and many of the expanded goals in the document have seen some progress, though completion looms long for most.

Our newly elected MLAs will now have the task of creating this assembly’s mandate before the first sitting in February 2022. They have progress to build off of – there are houses scheduled to be built, an addictions treatment centre coming, and the new Aaqqigiarvik correctional facility shows great promise in integrating Inuit Qaujimajatuqangit in dealing with trauma and justice – but there is still a great deal that remains to be done.

Following his appointment, Akeeagok said, “Nunavut is ready for new leadership,” adding that the territory “is at a crossroads.”

While this premier may have less experience in government than some of his colleagues, he has plenty of knowledge in governance from his years with the Qikiqtani Inuit Association.

Perhaps, with the pandemic receding to a part of everyday life and less a full-blown emergency, we can move beyond the cusp of progress.

On Sunday, Nov. 28, 2021 at 2:30 p.m. we will be having a Mental Health Movement in Rankin Inlet for all of Nunavut in front of Turaarvik Inns North.

I got involved in the movement because in the other two territories and the 10 provinces of this country, the average causes of death are accidents or natural causes. The main cause of death in Nunavut is suicide.

We are having the Mental Health Movement to raise awareness to this issue. It affects nearly all of us Nun-

avummiut, it is a cycle that needs to be broken.

There are so many issues that Nunavummiut have gone through or are still going through, such as the lack of mental health services. There aren’t enough therapists in any of our communities and most people must be sent out of their community to be able to receive mental health care.

The majority of Nunavummiut don’t have the proper resources that are needed.

Most of the mental health therapists are transient workers, meaning that access to mental health services is very limited or near impossible.

Having to do the same therapy sessions repeatedly could

feel like the trust and bond is broken to a lot of people; it can be hard for a person to do all over again.

There are many people that are living with mental illnesses, and it needs to be addressed.

Bringing awareness to this topic is important for Nunavummiut to understand.

This topic dates way back to residential schools. What happened in that time has made a major ripple effect to today.

I strongly believe that intergenerational trauma plays

a big part in Nunavut’s main cause of death. The last residential school in Nunavut closed in 1997, known as the Kivalliq Hall (Arctic college) here in Rankin Inlet.

It has made Nunavummiut resilient. In 1999 our Nunavut territory was built, we have our own territory due to resiliency.

Our Inuit culture is very important. I live in a generation where I am in between the older generation and modern generation. Creating a balance between the two worlds while maintaining our Inuktitut language and culture

is crucial for future generations. Personally, I understand Inuktitut more than I can speak it.

I have been discouraged many times because I am not fluent in my mother tongue.

Despite that, I am learning more about my language and Inuit culture and I strongly encourage everyone to keep learning, no matter what comments are made.

Our land, identity, culture, and Inuit are very important.

Nunavummiut need more and reliable resources. Understanding that not a lot of people find it easy to speak about their experiences, I believe that more activities for our isolated communities needs to

be provided.

We need recreational activities that aren’t sport-based, as not everyone plays sports.

More sewing programs, which create warmth for families during our long winter months and teach essential skill sets for people. More baking and cooking classes for men and women would be appreciated by many.

Programs for all ages.

With the co-operation of everyone, I believe that we can put an end to suicide that affects Nunavummiut. We are strong, resilient and caring.

Our land, language, culture and Inuit are important and we all matter.

Government’s mandate to be defined prior to winter sitting

The Speaker of Nunavut’s Legislative Assembly, Tony Akoak, announced on Nov. 22 the assembly will be reconvened on Feb. 21, 2022 for its winter sitting.

Prior to the House reconvening, all members will be meeting as a full caucus to begin defining a mandate for this term of

office. Premier P.J. Akeeagok stated, “I look forward to tabling a government’s mandate statement at the earliest opportunity.”

Newly-elected members will be completing their orientation during the last two weeks in January, said caucus chair Joe Savikataaq.

“All regular members will also be considering the government’s draft 2022-2023 capital esimates prior to their introduction in the winter sitting,” said Savikataaq.

A blizzard was sweeping through the Kivalliq region the weekend starting Nov. 20. Driving change together during National Addictions Awareness Week

Nunavut Nunavummiut were invited to join Nunavut’s Department of Health in recognizing National Addictions Awareness Week which runs from Nov. 21 to 27.

The theme for this year is “Driving Change Together”, and people were invited to talk about prevention, treatment/recovery and drive forward new ideas to reduce the stigma around problematic alcohol and/or drug abuse.

People dealing with an addiction are invited by the Dept. of Health to seek out help in overcoming substance abuse problems by calling your local health centre, talking to a trusted friend, family member, Elder or wellness counsellor.

Counselling services are available through the “Healing by Talking” program at 1-888-648-0070 or emailing healing@ gov.nu.ca.

There is also anonymous support available through the Nunavut Kamatsiaqtut Health Line (1-800-265-3333), the Indian Residential Schools Resolution Health Support Program (1-866925-4419), the Isaksimagit Inuusirmi Kataujjiqattigiit Embrace Life Council (1-866—804-2782) as well as other helplines such Crisis Services Canada, Kids Help Phone, and Youthspace.ca.

Walrus tests positive for trichinella

Iglulik A walrus in Iglulik has tested positive for trichinella, the Department of Health advised residents on Thursday.

The animal was harvested on Sept. 14.

Anyone who has consumed uncooked walrus meat recently and suffered from stomach pain, diarrhea, swollen eyelids, sweating, muscle pain or weakness might be infected with trichinella — a parasite — and should inform a health-care provider of the situation, according to the department.

Walrus meat can be tested for trichinella. For more information, contact environmental health officer Gary Nelson at 867-645-6660.

Canadian Food Inspection Agency issues recall on flavor crystal products

Canada Nunavut’s Department of Health is issuing a warning about food recalls which were issued by the CFIA (Canadian Food Inspection Agency).

Country Time brand Original Lemonade Fruit Juice Substitute Drink Mix (2.4 kg, Best Before 23 SE 15) and Tang brand Orange Flavor Crystals (2.2 kg, Best Before 23 AU 20, 23 AU 21) are being recalled by Kraft Heinz Canada due to the possible presence of glass.

Beer and wine store almost ready

Rankin Inlet Construction is complete and the Nunavut Liquor and Cannabis Corporation (NULC) has hired and trained eight employees and

two administrative staff for the upcoming beer and wine store in Rankin Inlet.

“Our inventory is stocked and ready for us to open,” said Dan Young, director of the NULC. The public-facing side of the store is about 550 square feet and will have three tills to serve customers.

The NULC will be working with newly named Minister of Finance Adam Lightstone to set a firm date for opening and will be communicating those plans with the public.

Part of the goal of the store is to shift drinking behaviours around hard alcohol.

“The NULC looks forward to making it easier for consumers to choose low-alcohol beverages over higher-alcohol spirits,” said Young. “We are excited to work with and get to know our new store team members. We are confident Rankin residents will see us working hard to serve the community professionally and responsibly.”

Hydrocarbons not detected in latest water sampling, do not drink advisory remains

Iqaluit The City of Iqaluit has released its latest weekly water sampling results undertaken between Nov. 7 and Nov. 15.

The results have all returned with a non-detect result for petroleum hydrocarbons.

Testing was undertaken for BTEX/PHC[F1-F4] which tests for petroleum hydrocarbons in the water using 11 parameters, according to the City.

Samples are taken from 13 total locations: six within the water treatment plant as well as seven spread throughout the water distribution system in Iqaluit. This is meant to provide an overall picture of the city’s water quality.

Iqaluit remains under a do not consume order, issued by Nunavut’s Department of Health Oct. 12.

One Nunavut and six NWT residents among AIP nominees Multiple on-the-land projects proposed among nominees

The Arctic Inspiration Prize (AIP) on Nov. 24 announced its 2021 finalists, among them are six NWT residents and one Nunavummiuq aiming to win up to $500,000 and the honour of being recognized by AIP. Diana Selguero is the one Nunavut nominee up for the prize. The project she hopes to develop is a mobile app for Nunavummiut for people in remote communities to better access mental health resources and reduce mental health crises, especially among youth.

Among the NWT nominees include Diane Koe, who is proposing to host a traditional camp offering young people, Elders and others the opportunity to learn traditional activities, among which include fishing and making dryfish.

Peggy Day hopes to use the AIP money to fund Hope House in the Inuvialuit Settlement Region, which would provide clients experiencing homelessness with counselling and referrals to rehab, social housing and job opportunities.

Yellowknife’s Rachel Cluderay is proposing to develop a training program to provide tools and resources to people who deliver on-the-land programming, to better prepare people to assist those dealing with mental health challenges in remote environments.

In Tuktoyaktuk, Kendyce Cockney is hoping to help prepare the community to make difficult decisions regarding climate change, which might include a possible relocation of the community.

Kendyce hopes to help empower residents to build climate change capacity for future generations.

The AIP is the largest annual prize in Canada, with one $1-million, four $500,000 and seven youth prizes of $100,000. It is led by the AIP Charitable Trust, which consists of many partners north and south, and has various Indigenous, government, industry and philanthropic partners.

Compete to learn Skill-development volleyball tournament invites all

The junior girls need practice, and that’s where Rankin Inlet residents come in.

Coaches Robert Kabvitok and Holly Mercer are inviting men and women to compete in a casual volleyball tournament Nov. 22 to 28, with the aim of helping develop the junior girls team’s skills.

“The main purpose is to get the kids to develop their skills and see how a tournament feels,” said Kabvitok. “These kids are playing soccer tournaments, hockey tournaments, but they’ve never really played a volleyball tournament. After the mini-tournament, we’ll see what we have to work on with the girls.”

He said the girls will be working on their volleying, bumping, communication and serving, plus bonding as a team.

The pair of Kabvitok and Mercer have been coaching for years, though they recently took a break to spend more family time.

Kabvitok is particularly proud of his past volleyball alumni who went on to compete in the Arctic Winter Games and Canada Summer Games.

“That was our goal,” said Kabvitok. “We wanted to see volleyball players representing Rankin and to have fun.”

Kabvitok found his love of coaching through his coach in junior high school.

“He was always with us and teaching us how to play,” he said.

“He was true to us and that’s what I wanted to do – help kids out. I love coaching.”

He thanks the senior men’s and women’s volleyball committee for allowing the girls to use their volleyball time.

The tournament will be held Monday, Nov. 22, Wednesday, Nov. 24 and Sunday, Nov. 28 in the evenings.

Nunavut back at nationals Iqaluit Curling Club sends men’s and women’s teams to Canadian Curling Club Championships in Ottawa

Wade Kingdon and Denise Hutchings are two of the more well-travelled curlers that have had the chance to represent the territory over the years.

They will get that chance again at the very same event they led Nunavut in two years ago.

The 2021 Everest Canadian Curling Club Championships kick off today, Nov. 29, in Ottawa and both rinks will be in action on opening day as the women take on Northern Ontario while the men will play Prince Edward Island.

Both teams left on Nov. 25 to take advantage of some extra ice time in the nation’s capital before everything begins because of the Iqaluit Curling Club being used by the city as the pick-up point for bottled water during the state of emergency.

Kingdon said he was able to get the bonus time for both teams courtesy of the RCMP Curling Club.

“They were really generous because they heard about our situation,” he said. “We’re trying to get in as much practice as we can. We had a few days on the ice (in Iqaluit) before it got shut down. We tried to fight it by telling them we’re practising for nationals but the emergency took precedence.”

Kingdon’s rink will also be playing in a funspiel to get more time but Hutchings’ crew won’t get the chance.

“Wade took the last spot,” said Hutchings.

“We got in as much practice as we could. The last night before the city took over the club, we were there as late as we could be. They told us we had to be out by midnight.”

A total of 14 teams from every province and territory will be in action and they’ve been split into two pools of seven for the round-robin.

Following that, the top four in each pool will advance to the double-knockout playoff round and from there, the last four left standing will play it out for the medals. 2019 was the last year this event was held as the 2020 edition fell victim to Covid-19 cancellation.

In addition to Northern Ontario, the women will be playing Newfoundland and Labrador, Prince Edward Island, Saskatchewan, Manitoba and Alberta while the men will square off with Yukon, Alberta, Quebec, Saskatchewan and Ontario following their opening contest.

“It’s game-by-game for us,” said Hutchings.

“We’ve seen some of these teams before so we know they’re going to be tough. You just have to come prepared to play every game.”

Kingdon, who managed to hit the win column two years ago by beating Saskatchewan, said there are some big names that will be showing up.

“Some teams don’t play in their Brier playdowns because it’s just too much work for them,” he said. “You take a province like Manitoba and it takes months to get to the provincial playdowns, if you’re lucky to get that far.

“This is a bit more structured and players like this format a bit better.”

This latest iteration of the USFL has some solid footing with Fox Sports behind it because it already has a TV contract so no need to go chasing one. According to Fox Sports, it plans to spend as much as $200 million getting off the ground with the hope that rich people will shove in at least that much through buying up the teams. There is also word that the league will be based entirely in Birmingham, Alabama for at least its first season inside a bubble.

I wish them well but don’t be surprised if it falls flat after Fox Sports realizes it plans on spending $200 million.

Oh, look … another one Has spring football in the United States ever worked? No, but several people have stepped up to the plate to take a swing at it. Fox Sports is the latest slugger to enter the ring with a rebirth of an old idea.

Jamal Ford-Robinson is a rugby union player with Gloucester in the English Premiership and had himself a hell of a time earlier this month after getting his nose bent out of shape. Someone was even kind enough to film it.

Ford-Robinson’s nose appeared to be signaling for a left-hand turn after getting it knocked sideways against the Exeter Chiefs in Premiership Rugby Cup action on Nov. 22. He went into the locker room for repairs with a trainer in tow. If you’ve had a broken nose, you know what that feeling is like and this trainer was trying his best to snap it back into place. Ford-Robinson was obviously uncomfortable after about 15 seconds of this guy literally trying to muscle it back into joint.

What Ford-Robinson didn’t appreciate was some laughing in the background and I don’t blame him one bit, never mind the trainer looking into the camera and asking if it looked good. Yeah, there’s someone I can trust with my nasal health.

No word on whether the nose was returned to its normal resting position but take it from me: there is no feeling quite like something being put back into joint.
