Many legislators are seeking Elder care within the communities

Judicial recounts will be required in two tight territorial election races.

Incumbent Joelie Kaernerk held off challenger Solomon Allurut by only three votes in the riding of Amittuq in the Oct. 25 trip to the polls.

In Cambridge Bay, Pamela Gross, who unsuccessfully challenged incumbent Jeannie Ehaloak in 2017, overtook Ehaloak by just nine votes this time around.

Five other incumbents won’t get the chance for another term: Cathy Towtongie, Patterk Netser, David Qamaniq, Emiliano Qirngnuq and Calvin Pedersen were all defeated, although Pedersen was not elected in the last election. He filled Kugluktuk’s vacated seat by acclamation in 2020.

MLAs will travel to Iqaluit for an orientation session that will run from Nov. 8 to 20. That will include the Nunavut leadership forum, scheduled for Nov. 17, to select the premier, who will choose

cabinet members.

George Hickes, who prevailed in Iqaluit-Tasiluk by a wide margin, said he has no intention of seeking the premiership, despite entering his third term as MLA. However, he said he’s open to continuing to serve as a cabinet minister.

“It feels great! The recognition of all the hard work the past eight years, especially through the challenges of the past two years, is incredibly humbling,” Hickes said of his re-election. “I will continue to do my absolute best in whatever role I’m in.”

Tony Akoak, who is also embarking on his third term after emerging as the top vote-getter among five candidates in Gjoa Haven, said he will need to talk to other MLAs prior to deciding on whether to pursue a cabinet post.

He said his priorities over the upcoming four years will be to keep Elders at home, getting a larger care home for Gjoa Haven, tackling the housing shortage and helping those with mental health issues as well as the people who assist them.

In Cambridge Bay, Gross said she “heard from a couple people that it would be a close race.”

She’s planning to ensure that Elders from the Kitikmeot return closer to home until the new Elder care facility is reinstated. That project was held up by the last assembly. Her other main priority is to work on the pavement and expansion of the community’s runway, she said.

Craig Simailak cruised to victory in Baker Lake last week after serving one year in the legislative assembly as an acclaimed candidate in a byelection.

“My first priority is to address the need for more Elder care. There is a need for an Elder care home in Baker Lake. We have always had a high population of Elders,” said Simailak. “The Elder care home we had before was closed in 2018 by the Government of Nunavut.”

P.J. Akeeagok, who won Iqaluit-Niaqunnguu by wide margin, said, “I’m very humbled by the confidence the electorate gave me, and I really think it gave a strong mandate in terms of the platform I campaigned on and that was always about children and families.

“My experience is something people are aware of but this campaign really centred around what the residents wanted,” said Akeeagok. “I really

tried pushing hard to ensure as a candidate for the territorial election the platform directly came from our friends and our neighbours here. I don’t know how much of a factor my experience had.”

Bobby Anavilok, who triumphed in Kugluktuk, said he felt it worked to his advantage that he campaigned in both English and Inuinnaqtun, and he used both languages during the candidates’ debate.

When he arrives in Iqaluit for the beginning of the sixth legislative assembly, he said securing an Elders care home for his community will be his main concern — an ambition that Kugluktuk has fought for in the past.

Karen Nutarak, who became the new representative for the Pond Inlet riding of Tununiq, said she couldn’t put her finger on what made her the preferred candidate. But she knows exactly what she’ll be pushing for as a legislator: a homeless shelter and more residences, an Elders facility and improvements in mental health care.

In Netsilik, which comprises Taloyoak and Kugaaruk, Joseph Quqqiaq Jr. said he took advantage of the local radio station, Facebook and Tiktok to disseminate his campaign messages. He said housing is his top priority, along with mental health, education and employment.

“I believe in a lot of great possibilities when everyone works together,” he said.

NACA’s Iqaluit office shut down; board hasn’t met since pandemic started

The heavily indebted Nunavut Arts and Crafts Association is in disarray, if not unofficially defunct.

The non-profit organization’s office in Iqaluit recently closed. Its telephone number is no longer in service.

A board member, speaking off the record, said there hasn’t been a board meeting since prior to the Covid-19 pandemic and no information has been circulated to board members during that entire period.

Board chair Jesse Tungilik couldn’t be reached for comment.

The Department of Economic Development and Transportation (EDT), which used to provide $550,000 in core funding to the Nunavut Arts and Crafts Association (NACA), isn’t giving any money to NACA from the 2021-22 budget, nor did it in 2020-21.

Asked for insight on NACA’s status, the GN department stated: “EDT has not been made aware of a change in NACA’s legal status as an organization. EDT has been informed that NACA is no longer maintaining an administra-

tive office in Iqaluit.”

The department added that it’s “assessing NACA’s situation and exploring options to move forward.”

Janet Pitsiulaaq Brewster, who served as NACA’s executive director for close to two years until last September, said she discovered “significant debt” that the organization had run up in the past. Although she said she couldn’t go into detail publicly for confidentiality reasons, she disclosed that there was enough money owing that it impacted day-to-day operations and “the ability to stay afloat.”

She briefed EDT about NACA’s difficulties prior to her departure, and that included “governance issues,” which is a similar challenge that many organizations face across the territory, she said. She referred to it as a “systemic issue,” not something that’s the fault of any individual. But a lack of oversight from the territorial government played a role, she contended.

Covid-19 was another major factor in NACA’s decline, she suggested, as the lockdowns made it even more difficult to “rally board members.”

NACA was formed in October 1998 to promote and work on behalf of the territory’s visual artists. The annual Nunavut Arts Festival was its centrepiece event, along with various workshops

and conferences.

Former Iqaluit-Niaqunnguu MLA Pat Angnakak, while speaking in the legislative assembly in March, inquired about NACA’s footing. She noted that the last time she asked about the association in 2020, EDT Minister David Akeeagok told the House that the organization was not in compliance with the terms and conditions of its GN contribution agreement.

“Sadly, there is no update. It is still ongoing. I want to assure this House that there is no partnership agreement in place until all that is settled with the (NACA) board. Right now, there is no resolution to date with the Nunavut Arts and Crafts and their board. Right now it is in a limbo,” Akeeagok said at the time. “We would like to continue to work with them, but when you don’t have that, you don’t have (an agreement). I want to assure this House that what’s been approved for our partnership program, when terms of conditions are not being met, we do seize that. At this point, as sad as I am, we have seized that.”

Arts organization needed Brewster said it’s important that Nunavut maintain an arts and crafts organization that can support Nunavummiut artists.

“Well over thirty-five per cent of adult Nunavut Inuit self-identify as artists and many of those artists come from multi-generational families of artists,” she said. “There are so many economic drivers for having an arts organization.

There are really, really important mental health drivers because we know when we’re creating art that we’re healthier and happier… I speak as an artist when I say that.”

She added that the art from Nunavut has helped raise the profile of the territory across the country.

“Inuit art is part of the Canadian psyche,” she said.

Although EDT stated that it’s not “able to comment on the financial position of an independent organization like NACA,” it noted that “when EDT enters into an agreement with an organization like NACA, the department does not assume or accept responsibility for debts that the organization may have incurred.”

The department added that it “remains committed and continues to work to ensure that Nunavut artists, arts organizations, and communities have access to programs and services that support the arts sector,” adding that more than $5 million has been committed to support the overall arts sector in 2021-22.

Quassa takes on senior adviser role with Baffinland

Paul Quassa has taken a role with Baffinland Iron Mines, the company announced Thursday morning.

Quassa will serve as senior adviser to CEO Brian Penney, effective immediately.

“Mining and mineral development across Nunavut is a foundation of the Nunavut Agreement. The vision of becoming ‘self-sufficient’ becomes the pillar of development,” Quassa stated. “It was what we as negotiators fought

to control so we could ensure Inuit benefit from resource development. Baffinland is benefiting Inuit and the affected communities through training and career opportunities and their commitment to greater opportunities with the approval of the phase two proposal.

“I am pleased to join the team at Baffinland and look forward to ensuring that Inuit voices continue to be at the centre of Baffinland’s decision making processes.”

Quassa resigned as Aggu MLA in August with several weeks remaining in his term.

He was also premier for a brief period, president of land claims organization Nunavut Tunngavik Incorporated and was a chief negotiator of Nunavut Agreement, the basis upon which Nunavut became a distinct territory.

Penney said, “Inuit perspectives have always been critical to Baffinland and Mr. Quassa brings decades of experience to our team to help us continue to ensure that Inuit play a key role in our decision making.”

Soil contamination likely to blame for Iqaluit water crisis Residents, businesses to receive water rebate for October; no clear timeline when water will be safe to drink again

The City of Iqaluit’s investigation team has found what is believed to be a historical underground fuel spill adjacent to the water treatment plant, located in an “inaccessible, below-ground void,” city hall stated Oct. 26.

Testing is being done to confirm that this is the source of the hydrocarbons that contaminated the city’s north clear well. There are two clear wells at the site.

The municipality has reported the spill to the Government of Nunavut and has hired a professional firm to manage and remove the contaminants.

In addition, the city’s engineers are developing a site remediation plan.

The first phase of the environmental site assessment has finished and phase two has started as of Oct. 22.

Also being implemented is an online, real-time monitoring station that will focus on detecting hydrocarbons. The station was installed on Oct. 22.

The Canadian Armed Forces is offering support. The military is looking for a suitable spot to place a mobile water treatment plant that the Government of Nunavut has requested.

“I met with Maj. Scott Purcell this afternoon (Oct. 22) via Zoom … they’re looking at mul-

tiple different locations and making sure they fall under our emergency water licence,” said Iqaluit Mayor Kenny Bell.

It is taking longer to flush Iqaluit’s water than the expected 48 hours mentioned in a recent municipal update. Residents were asked to start running their taps on Oct. 28 to flush their water tanks, and to run their dishwashers for one cycle while empty.

Iqaluit’s drinking water crisis has been ongoing since Oct. 12.

The City of Iqaluit is waiving all of its water fees for the month of October, after passing a unanimous motion during the Oct. 26 city council meeting.

Allison Drummond, senior director of corporate services brought forward the motion, which gave three options: 1: To provide a full rebate for Oct. 2021; 2: To provide a certain percentage back per week for the duration of the declared emergency; 3: To provide no water rebate.

Council went with option one and will be providing a full rebate to residents as they were unable to provide potable water for an extended period of time and required assistance from citizens in flushing their pipes which resulted in additional water use.

“For now obviously we’ll do the month that we know, but we’ll see what happens in the next month and if we need to, do a week, two weeks or a month and we’ll just do it then,” said Bell.

However, the City won’t be footing the bill for people cleaning their water tanks because of the water crisis.

“Water tanks should be cleaned once a year anyways, there’s no real special equipment required … we’re not proposing it at this time,” said Amy Elgersma, Iqaluit’s chief administrative officer (CAO).

“Most of us are probably due to start with,” noted councillor John Fawcett, suggesting a large number of Iqaluit residents don’t clean their tanks often enough anyway. He later added that it should be a separate item for another city

council meeting for those who do clean their tanks and have to do so again.

Despite the circumstances, Bell said he couldn’t be any prouder of the community’s response to this.

“It’s a rough situation to be in but we’re pulling together well. Businesses have come together – even outside businesses and organizations have come to our aid. The City of Iqaluit staff are unbelievably fantastic. It’s honestly an honour to serve with them.

“The Government of Nunavut and Dr. Patterson’s office have been a great help,” Bell said. “This is very important to us, and we’ll get this work done as soon as we can. But thank you for your patience.”

NACA had strategy, but little follow-through

Arts association must overcome governance problems; artists need support Northern News Services

The territory’s premier arts association is in limbo, at best, doors closed in Iqaluit after more than 20 years supporting artists across the territory.

In its heyday, Nunavut Arts and Crafts Association (NACA) hosted not only an annual festival showcasing the works of talented Nunavummiut, but facilitated smaller workshops and conferences to bolster the art economy.

Now it’s unclear whether the heavily-indebted organization will even be able to resume operations, as there have been no board meetings for more than a year and a half and a board member says no information has circulated during this time either.

NACA was formed in 1998 to help visual artists promote and sell their work.

It also served as a networking tool for artists.

While other arts associations and organizations fill the gaps as far as performing arts and music are concerned, visual and traditional artists may find themselves left to self-promotion with no central hub in the territory.

“Well over thirty-five per cent of adult Nunavut Inuit self-identify as artists and many of those artists come from multi-generational families of artists,”

says Janet Pitsiulaaq Brewster, who headed NACA for nearly two years as executive director until September 2020.

This means that there is a significant population base within the territory that could benefit from a properly functioning arts organization.

The GN, in a 2010 economic impact study on arts in Nunavut, stated that “Through its multiple stages from material supply, to product creation and wholesale and retail distribution, the sector generates a total economic impact of $33.4 million annually,” or more than 1,000 full-time equivalent jobs.

NACA outlined a number of threats to its ability to function as an organization in a 2009 strategic plan, including damage to its reputation; climate change issues; the continued, decades-long difficulty in locating and quarrying stone stock for carvers; the looming threat of the European Union’s seal products ban – now extended to more than 30 countries – and availability of tools and the ability to purchase them.

Brewster also brought up “governance issues,” which the strategic plan alludes to in the form of a lack of presence in the communities, a lack of direction, as well as a need to update and strengthen bylaws and policy.

The organization seemed to have had

plenty of good ideas in its plan, but did it lack the will to see it through?

An arts curriculum from kindergarten through to college, potentially developed to be delivered in Inuktitut, would have been an amazing, culturally relevant initiative between the departments of Economic Development and Tourism and Education. It would also engage youth, a target demographic for NACA, which stated in 2009 that fewer and fewer youth are choosing a career in the arts.

Goals for the 2013-14 fiscal year included providing current and accurate information about the arts sector, but that must have been when the buck stopped, as anything online relating to Nunavut arts seems to be sorely lacking after the GN’s Sanaugait arts strategy wrapped in 2013.

Sanaugait stated more than 10 per cent of Canadian art sold internationally is Inuit art, and that was nearly 15 years ago.

With such large contributions to the social and economic fabric of the territory and country, it’s a shame artists are being left to fend for themselves. While featured heavily in the Winnipeg Art Gallery’s Qaumajuq exhibit, Nunavut artists deserve more opportunities to market themselves domestically and internationally, and greater support to do their work.

much warmer temperatures on the Island.

The Arctic Ocean has not fully frozen over ye , but the few lakes and rivers are slowly getting thicker ice for now. Many hunters and fishers travel by land instead of the ice to be safe. It is much different from years ago. Caribou have been seen traveling which is unusual as we have not seen much caribou nearby Cambridge Bay, Nunavut for a few years. Their migration routes have changed also.

With not much caribou around the local Ekalututiak Hunter’s & Trapper’s Organization have passed a motion in the board meetings that caribou tagging system will be used, where beneficiaries can submit their names to the EHTO for one of 24 tags, which is the allowable quota this season.

This decision was made due to the decrease in population of the herds around our area.

When hunters get their harvest it is often shared within the community and to make sure Elders get some meat. This is very important part of the Inuinnait tradition that this happens, to look after our Elders. Many

stories are told when our Elders and Inuit go without eating traditional foods, they get sick and weak, but once they have eaten the food such as caribou, muskox, fish, or seal their energy levels are back to normal and they tend not to get sick physically. This still happens, especially for our Elders who are in hospitals and Elder homes, or who are unable to fully live a normal life.

We have Inuit who now have cancer, and Elders who are being sent to other Elder care facilities either within Nunavut and now I see Elders being sent to the Embassy in Ottawa, which is so very far away. This causes a lot of stress and weakness to our Elders, and it also causes stress to the families who are unable to be with their loved ones. We hope the Government of Nunavut will seriously consider building more Elder facilities within Nunavut and in most communities. This will be such a much needed service which is so important to the Inuit.

Our Continuing Care Centre in Cambridge Bay is often already at full capacity, so Elders who need to be cared for are now being sent away, for example, to Gjoa Haven’s CCC or further from home. Visits by family members are allowed which is good, but the Elders want to be home in their hometowns to be able to see their loved ones. It is now time to let our leaders prioritize this important issue which we as Inuit in Nunavut are facing. We must look after our Elders.

Cambridge Bay residents went to the voting polls on Monday to elect a Member for the Legislative Assembly and three candidates were up for election. Jeannie Ehaloak, Pamela Gross and Peter Ohokak, all from Cambridge Bay. Since the votes were so close between Pamela and Jeannie, both have the same Inuinnaq name Hakongak, there will be a recount. There was a 9 vote difference so automatically a judicial recount has to be done.

Once the recount is completed, then they will declare the winner of the election for Cambridge Bay’s MLA. It was so close between all three candidates. It was won-

derful to see everyone supporting each other, which is as it has always been in our community. I am a proud Inuk when we see leadership at it’s full power and at each candidate doing their best to serve their constituents. Showing respect in our communities is something we have always been proud of as Ikaluktuutiakmiutat. Let us support our new MLA whoever it may be and give them reason to be proud to be from Cambridge Bay, Nunavut. Good luck to each Hakongak.

Continue to wear your masks in public places and to continue to keep washing your hands, even when traveling out of town. Take good care of each other. Rapper Jocelyn Arreak, known as Aocelyn, eager to perform live, tour, attend college and become a priest

Friday, Nov. 5 marks a big day for Inuk rapper Jocelyn Arreak, who performs under the name Aocelyn.

That’s when her first album,

titled Lovely, will be released.

Of the eight tracks, she’s partial to a tune called Wrong Guy, formerly titled Adore You. “It’s for couples. It’s got a nice beat, pretty good lyrics, probably the best one I ever had,” she said.

Aocelyn — pronounced “Aw-slin” — wrote most of the lyrics for the album.

Thor Simonsen, CEO of Hitmakerz, the label that signed Aocelyn, did the arranging and mixing of the songs.

The project was in the works since 2020.

“I can’t wait for it to come out. It’s my very first album,” said Aocelyn, 22, who resides in Pond Inlet.

Chief among her musical influences is rapper Eminem.

“I remember when his (first) album came out, no one knew about him. It gives me hope. If (my album) doesn’t succeed, it still gives me hope. That’s what I learned from him.”

Eminem was bullied, she added. That’s something she can relate to.

“I look like a white person to some people. I’m part Black, so they would be racist against me and say stuff about me,” she said. “My dad made me tough — sticks and stones may break my bones but words will never hurt me.”

But she’s aware of how harmful bullying can be. She got to know the late singer Kelly Fraser, whose family revealed after her death that she was tormented by relentless online harassment.

Aocelyn, 22, shared some of her own struggles with Fraser years ago.

“She’s the one who discovered me,” she said. “She called me strong one time because I was going through so much bullying. They would laugh

at me and things like that.”

So the accomplishment of releasing an album is a major milestone and a way to overcome her detractors. While her current ambition is to rise to prominence as a musical superstar, she has plans to become a priest by the time she’s 30. Religion is an important part of her life, and part of what gives her strength.

“I only care about what God thinks,” she said.

Her short-term goals include enrolling in the music program at Algonquin College in Ottawa in January. She aims to grasp the foundations of media, film and music through the eight-month program.

She also has ambitions to go on tour across Nunavut, and she’d like to do it with Hitmakerz alumni Shauna Seeteenak and Angela Amarualik.

“Angela is my childhood friend,” she said of Amarualik, as they both grew up in Iglulik.

Of Seeteenak, a fellow rapper from Baker Lake, she said, “I like her. She’s cool.”

The tour would give Aocelyn an opportunity to perform in front of a live audience, something she has yet to do.

I Wish I was a King, the first

single off of Lovely is her second release overall. It follows Adventure Awaits, which hit the airwaves in 2019.

In September, Aocelyn was one of several artists to attend the Hitmakerz compound in Ottawa for a week of training as an entertainer. While there, she also shot the video for I Wish I was a King, which sees her and her backup dancers flaunting their moves.

“They were so nice, professional, welcoming. They were really good people. I miss them already, I miss hanging out together,” she said of her time in Ottawa.

Simonsen refers to Aocelyn as a “unique artist, not only in Nunavut but in Canada.”

“She doesn’t have much professional training, but she’s got a great ear and very interesting ideas,” he said. “This helps make her songs sound very different from anything else. Jocelyn is also extremely driven, focused, and open to new challenges. I think that’s something that all artists need if they want to make it pro.

“Drive is way more important than skill – you can teach skill, but you can’t teach drive, perseverance, and determination.”

New ambulance arrives on sealift for Sanikiluaq ‘Every community should have one’ says SAO

Sanikiluaq finally has an ambulance, with a new-tothem unit arriving via sealift to the community. Now residents can expect to have another basic medical service available to them.

“My understanding is the community has been wanting to do this the last few years,” said Ronald Ladd, senior administrative officer for the Municipality of Sanikiluaq.

Previously residents of the Belcher Island community had to rely on the generosity of others for lifts to the health centre or airport for medevacs. Various departments relied on one another to each provide their share of picking people up.

“It was kind of a scattered approach,” he said.

Four years ago, Ladd was the SAO of Pangnirtung and brought his experience setting up a similar contract to buy a used ambulance for that community to Sanikiluaq. He adds that every community, no matter where you are, should have some kind of ambulance and be able to provide fundamental patient services, such as being able to stabilize a patient while they are being transported.

“These are basic services, these are ambulances,” said Ladd, “every community should have one, either public or privately ran,” he said.

Ladd also adds there is a more involved partnership with the GN compared to other communities due to the Municipality having to deliver many of the services the GN would normally be doing.

“We don’t have a GN building, we don’t have a GN presence. They’re here but we deliver a lot of the services for them, we’re not a centralized community

like Iqlauit, Cambridge Bay or Pond Inlet, we don’t have the regional office here,” explained Ladd.

“We do a lot of the things typically the GN would be responsible for, but are working in partnership with the GN to try and have basic services.”

The newly arrived ambulance is a used 2014 model, uses diesel fuel and will serve the community for the foreseeable future.

“It’s a great day for residents in Sanikiluaq,” said resident Miriam Arragutainaq.

Youth cast ballots in Student Vote program

Nunavut At around 9 p.m. EST on Oct. 25, nine schools in Nunavut had reported the results of its Student Vote project for the 2021 territorial election.

More than 500 students cast votes for their preferred candidates after learning about territorial government and the electoral process.

The project was organized by CIVIX, a non-partisan, registered charity according to its website, dedicated to building the skills and habits of engaged Canadians toward increased participation in democracy.

Both elementary and high school students took part in nine constituencies, the results of the mock election are as follows: • Rankin Inlet South: Lorne Kusugak elected, 106 total votes • Netsilik: Emiliano Qirngnuq elected, eight total votes • Iqaluit-Tasiluk: James Arreak elected, seven total votes • Aivilik: Solomon Malliki elected, 28 total votes • Iqaluit-Sinaa: Christa Kunuk elected, 77 total votes • Cambridge Bay: Pamela Gross elected, 44 total votes • Iqaluit-Niaqunnguu: P.J. Final Covid-19 cases recover in Coral Harbour

Salliq/Coral Harbour On Oct. 21, the first three of Coral Harbour’s

seven active cases of Covid-19 were considered recovered. The next day Nunavut’s chief public health officer, Dr. Michael Patterson announced the easing of measures in the community.

“Current cases of Covid-19 in Coral Harbour are isolated to household transmission,” said Patterson on Oct. 22. “As the risk of community transmission is low, it is safe to slightly ease public health measures and lift the travel restrictions in place for Coral Harbour.”

Over the following week the remaining four active cases would continue to make recoveries, with the final two cases recovered by Oct. 26.

Hunting limit set for Bluenose East caribou as herd continues to decline: GN

Nunavut A maximum of 170 Bluenose East caribou can be harvested within the Nunavut Settlement Area, the Government of Nunavut announced Wednesday.

The total allowable harvest is necessary because the herd is continuing to decline, creating a conservation concern, according to the Department of Environment. The number of Bluenose East caribou was estimated at 19,000 in 2018, down from approximately 120,000 animals in 2010.

The herd’s range includes a vast area around Kugluktuk and extends south into the vicinity of Great Bear Lake in the Northwest Territories.

The Department of Environment has also established a sex-selective harvest ratio of one female caribou for every male caribou harvested.

Hunters must acquire a tag from the local wildlife office before hunting.

By comparison, in 2017, Kugluktuk had a total of 340 tags available for Bluenose East caribou.

Cannabis’ impact on territories being evaluated

Nunavut The University of Waterloo’s School of Public Health and Health Systems has recently launched a three-year study to help measure the impact of of cannabis in all three territories. The study is being led by Dr. David Hammond of the University of Waterloo and Dr. Erin Hobin with Public Health Ontario.

It has already started with a survey beginning on Sept. 7, it will be running until Nov. 15.

During this time, anyone 16 years of age or older can take part in English, Inuktitut, Inuinnaqtun or French. Users and non-users of cannabis are welcome to take part.

It includes questions on use, related risk behaviours and social norms.

“Cannabis is now legal in the territories, yet there is little evidence regarding if and how people are using cannabis and the impacts of cannabis on key health incomes,” said Hobin.

“We are grateful for the participation of the territorial governments, Indigenous partners, and communities.”

RV Ludy Pudluk returns from Qikiqtani voyage

St. Johns, Newfoundland The Qikiqtaaluk Corporation’s research vessel (RV) Ludy Pudluk has returned from its summer research voyage to the Qikiqtani region as of Oct. 13, returning to its home port of St. Johns, Newfoundland and completing a three-month voyage to the Arctic.

During this time inshore fishery research was conducted in Kinngait and Sanikiluaq with future plans to travel to Sanirajak and Iglulik in

2022. There were 13 Inuit land-claims beneficiaries who were hired throughout the voyage, Qikiqtaaluk noted.

The research was conducted with assistance from local hunters and trappers organizations.

“Inuit were provided with experience in the operation of the vessel, as well as doing research in the communities.

“I look forward to the day when the research is carried out by a 100 percent Inuit crew, in both the operation of the vessel and doing the research,” said Ted Irniq, an Inuit crew member of Ludy Pudluk.

Artifice to premiere Nov. 11

Iqaluit Iqaluit’s latest performing arts group, the Nunavut Theatre Company now has a set date for its debut production Artifice. It will be taking place at the Aqsarniit Hotel starting on Thursday, Nov. 11, there will be additional shows the following Friday and Saturday.

Artifice is a comedy starring Bibi Bilodeau, Jill Bonnet, Bridget Campbell, Hillary Casey, Marlene Letkeman-Holst, Mollie King, Aloka Wijesooriya and David Venn.

The majority of the shows will be taking place in the evenings and will be for people ages 19 and over and there will be a 14-plus matinee on Saturday.

Tickets will cost $50 general admission or $20 for Elders. Those who can’t make it to the show but still want to support the Nunavut Theatre Company can also buy community tickets, which will be held for lower-income individuals who can’t afford to buy a ticket.

Masks and social distancing will be mandatory and a full bar will be available for the evening shows.

Iqaluit’s thrift store finds new temporary location Community support has been ‘incredible’ says Piviniit chair

True North Property Group has reached an agreement with the Piviniit Thrift Store to have building 778 serve as its new location.

In mid-October, Piviniit had to leave its 655 location due to the Qajuqturvik Community Food Centre which operates the building, wanting the new space for additional programming.

The new location is only going to be a temporary solution as True North has plans to demolish 778 and construct new structure in its place in a few years time.

“We’re hopeful and it looks like we’re be able to stay for about three years in this location,” said Kira Bychok, chairperson of the Piviniit Thrift Store.

In the long-term they are looking to either purchase their own building or to get a long-term lease for a location.

It was quite a tight fit at the food centre, Bychok adds.

“It was only about (1,000) square feet and the building that we’re moving into is (around 2,500) feet and that is more of what we need.”

Other companies had also offered up space to Piviniit, such as Northview, R and R Paints and Arctic Co-operatives.

Long-term they are looking for a location with a similar amount of space.

At the moment, Piviniit says that True North, and the community as a whole, have been gracious and supportive.

“I think (True North) recognized the need for a thrift store in the community and they wanted to do their best to help and they certainly did,” said Bychok.

Bychok recognized other groups and organizations who helped in the thrift store’s time of need, including the Qikiqtani Inuit Association which provided funding, the Uqsuq Corporation in providing subsidized fuel for the new location, Nunavut Moving Company who helped Piviniit move locations, as well as the Anglican Church, MLA Adam Lightstone and former duputy mayor Janet Brewster.

“The community was incredible, we received an outpouring of support from volunteers and former shoppers and we got a petition that got over 850 signatures on it. We’ve had people constantly asking us if we can help. The community support was overwhelming and we are incredibly grateful for it.”

A look at Coral Harbour in the 1980s ‘When I reflect on all the places … I’ve had an opportunity to visit and work, I feel extremely fortunate,’ says photographer

As Nunavut News reported last week, Darryl Gershman, a retired dentist and avid photographer, spent decades working in Indigenous communities across Canada, his trusty camera always by his side.

Gershman worked and travelled across the North during the 1980s and 1990s, capturing an amazing treasure trove of thousands of images of daily life in the North.

“When I reflect on all the places throughout Northern Canada that I’ve had an opportunity to visit and work, I feel extremely fortunate,” Gershman said.

“I think of the stunning geographic regions I’ve seen, the people I’ve met, the experiences I’ve had and the body parts that froze,” he quipped.

In the weeks since his daughter digitized a number of his old slides, Gershman has shared dozens of the pictures online. There, they have proved a sensation for residents of Naujaat and Coral Harbour who have helped piece together when they were taken, identified the people in the photographs and shared their own memories of those times.

“The comments I read on Facebook by the people in the photos and those who know the people in the photos are priceless to me,” Gershman stated. “Even if people don’t even remember who I am, and there are comments asking who I was, I realize how important these photos are to the community. I’ve seen comments that this is the only photo there is of someone as a child. I think that people are enjoying seeing themselves, family and friends from years ago.”

The photographs offer a glimpse of daily life in Coral Harbour in the 1980s – friends cooking a meal, a view of a polar bear skin hung on an old fishing boat and youth playing sports.

“I found it interesting that so many Inuit alive when I first visited lived traditional lifestyles within their own lifetimes before settlements were established in the 1960s and 1970s,” Gershman stated. “They were living the history of their ancestors and living in the modern western world. They went from kudlik to microwave in one lifetime.”

Vandal returns as minister of Northern Affairs as Trudeau names new cabinet

A few familiar faces are shuffling seats among the Northern and Indigenous portfolios as Prime Minister Justin Trudeau named his new cabinet on Tuesday.

Dan Vandal remains minister of Northern Affairs, but he adds responsibility for the Canadian Northern Economic Development Agency, formerly held

by Melanie Joly.

Marc Miller becomes minister of Crown-Indigenous Relations.

Miller’s previous post, minister of Indigenous Services, is now in the hands of Patty Hajdu, who served as minister of Health in the past.

Conservative leader Erin O’Toole, who heads the official opposition, quickly issued a response to Trudeau’s cabinet picks, accusing the government of not giving enough priority to the economy.

“With inflation at a near twenty-year high, causing gasoline, grocery and housing prices to skyrocket, and businesses suffering from major supply chain interruptions, it is clear from today’s appointments that the Trudeau government is not serious about addressing Canada’s economic challenges,” O’Toole stated.

Iqaluit foursome ready to take on country at Canadian Mixed Curling Championship

And so begins another season of what we hope will be plenty of curling for the country and the national championships that come with it.

Nunavut’s first foray into the national championship season will kick off on Nov. 7 as the Canadian Mixed Curling Championship gets underway in Canmore, Alta. The territory’s entry will be from the Iqaluit Curling Club made up of skip Peter Van Strien, third Meredith Penner, second Greg Howard and lead Lena Chown. They qualified for nationals after winning the territorial playdown earlier this year.

The expectations for Van Strien are simple: stay positive and keep curling.

“We’re hoping to not let the nerves get the best of us,” he said. “I’m sure we’ll all be nervous at first but we’ll try to stay positive and see what happens.”

Nunavut will be in action in the opening draw as they take on Nova Scotia with a big game the following day against the NWT, who will be skipped by Yellowknife’s Jamie Koe, someone who has

scores of national experience at both the Tim Hortons Brier and mixed nationals.

He’s a two-time medalist at this event, narrowly losing in the final in 2015 to claim silver and beating Manitoba to win bronze two years ago.

Van Strien said that’s a game Nunavut always looks forward to, no matter the event.

“Jamie has a lot of experience and that’s going to be a tough test for us,” he said.

“It’s always good to have a Northern battle.”

The format sees the 14 rinks split into two pools of seven for the round-robin.

The top four teams in each pool will move on to the championship round, taking their records with them, to play the four teams from the other pool they haven’t yet played while the bottom three teams will move into the seeding pool to determine final placings. The top four teams from the championship round will move into the playoff round to determine who wins what.

“We know getting a top-four finish will be tough so we’re going to take it game-by-game,” said Van Strien. “If we can win one or two, we’ll start thinking about that next round but whatever hap-

pens happens. It’s all about playing every shot but a win or two would be great.”

The foursome does have experience at prior national championships. Van Strien teamed up with Angela Dale to play at the Canadian Mixed Doubles Championship inside the bubble in Calgary back in March while Howard most recently played at the Tim Hortons Brier this past March, also inside the bubble in Calgary, with skip Peter Mackey of Iqaluit.

Back then, the Covid-19 rules were very strict with players only allowed to leave their hotel room to either go practice or play; no sightseeing or dining out of any sort was permitted.

Van Strien said he hasn’t heard of anything like that for Canmore but that doesn’t mean the team won’t still be taking care.

“I haven’t been told of a bar-code tracking system or anything like that but the same rules apply with masking and distancing,” he said. “It looks like we’ll be able to go out and have a meal and maybe see a bit of the town so that’s a big change. It doesn’t sound like it’s too restrictive.”

The rink will be leaving for the event from the capital on Nov. 5.

Remember when Daryl Morey committed the sin of tweeting support for the people of Hong Kong? He kicked a hornet’s nest with that one and the Chinese regime responded by blacking out the Houston Rockets on Chinese T.V., followed by the NBA and some of its players tut-tutting him for having such nerve. Apparently, the Rockets are still not being broadcast in China two years later.

Enter Enes Kanter of the Boston Celtics, who not only decided to take on the issue of Tibet but has doubled down, even tripled down, on stuff the Chinese government doesn’t like hearing. It began earlier this month when Kanter posted a video calling for Tibetan independence and labelling Xi Jinping, China’s leader, as a brutal dictator. That was enough for Tencent, a streaming service based in China, to pretty much cancel the Celtics in the country. Kanter’s response was one of ‘so what?’ and he’s now moved on to Nike and its perceived slave-labour issues.

Kanter’s latest offering deals with how Nike apparently hasn’t yet proved it doesn’t employ forced labour at its manufacturing locations. I can’t say for sure if Nike does such things but Kanter seems to think they do and he wants an answer. Anyone who knows anything about the NBA will know that Nike is the official apparel company of the league and plenty of players are clients of Phil Knight’s juggernaut.

But here’s something you may have noticed as well: the NBA has been awfully silent on this whole episode.

It’s had no problem supporting players’ stances in the past so why hasn’t it come out and said anything on this?

My guess is because it depends on the hundreds of millions it gets from China – don’t bite the hand that feeds you, right? – in order to keep up with the way things are going. The NBA would never admit this but the longer it keeps its mouth shut, the worse it’s going to get.

And Enes Kanter apparently wants it that way.

You’re sorry for that?

Game one of the 2021 World Series featuring the Atlanta Braves and Houston Asterisks (yes, that’s what I call them) kicked off the Fall Classic on Oct. 26 and the Braves won the opener, 6-2. But it was Braves pitcher Charlie Morton who was all the talk of the opener.

Morton lasted until the first out of the fourth inning and not because he was pulled. He ended up leaving due to a fractured right fibula after wearing a comebacker in the bottom of the third inning. He finished that inning and then struck out Jose Altuve to get the first out of the fourth before finally succumbing to the pain of trying to push off the rubber. In case you’re wondering, Morton threw 16 more pitches after being plunked.

Following the game, people offered well-wishes to Morton and I add to those who want him to get better soon. His response? An apology. No joke – Morton said he was sorry he wasn’t able to finish the game. Son, you have nothing to apologize for. I know almost every other human being would be limping off the mound had that happened to them, myself included.

Don’t say you’re sorry because you did more than what anyone could have asked for.
