When Nunia Anoee decided to move from Sanirajak to Arviat for a teaching job in 1999, she thought she’d only be there for two years.

More than 20 years later, Anoee is being recognized for her accomplishments and commitment to education with Nunavut’s Council of the Federation Literacy Award.

The award is presented to a teacher in each province and territory to celebrate exceptional achievement, innovative practice and excellence in literacy.

“After my two years I asked if I’m going back to Hall Beach or am I staying. I ended up buying a house, having a child and having a baby. So this is home now,” said Anoee.

“I feel really lucky to have been working with really supportive people.”

On Sept. 13, Premier Joe Savikataaq recognized Anoee’s accomplishments in the legislative assembly “Nunia is dedicated to meeting students where they are at and helping strengthen stu-

dents’ Inuktitut language skills at all ages, and she encompasses all the qualities of a leader of literacy promotion,” said Savikataaq. “While her studies and work have taken her to different communities across the territory, she recognizes the importance of learning different dialects of Inuktitut to facilitate more meaningful communication with Elders, community members, students and family.”

Anoee told Kivalliq News she didn’t think the award was such a big deal at first.

“When I read it in an email, I thought that’s great. Then my sisters and family were happy about it and it made me realize it is exciting” she said.

“I’m very grateful for the people who have submitted my name.”

Anoee started her career off as a classroom assistant in 1987. After a couple of years in that position, Anoee decided to pursue further education to become a teacher.

“We had a principal who was really helpful and encouraged assistants to achieve their Northern Native Teacher Certificates,” said Anoee.

Her studies took her to Iqaluit where she worked towards her

degree, taking a brief break to return to Hall Beach so one of her children could attend kindergarten.

‘From there I went back to Iqaluit to finish the BA program,” she said.

When she finished school Anoee ended up working alongside Nellie Kusugak to develop Inuktitut language programming for the territory. Following that she headed back to Hall Beach where she taught different levels of school until she applied for the job that would take her to Arviat.

“I moved to Arviat after seeing a job advertisement in Nunatsiaq News and a friend told me I would enjoy doing the work that was advertised. I got interviewed but then through the summer I went camping from my parents. Then when we got back my mom wrote to me to let me know I got the job I wanted,” she said.

Throughout her school career Anoee has taught at all levels, from kindergarten to high school. She has also taken intermittent breaks to work with the department of education on improving the Inuktitut programming for the territory.

She is currently the Grade 2

teacher at Levi Angmak elementary school.

Although she spent her first few years in Arviat teaching Inuktitut in high school she later decided to return to working with primary school children because she thought she could have a greater impact on younger students.

“If you want the best for your students, no matter what program you have, how good it is, you have to adjust it to the students. We have kids with short attention spans now, so you have to come up with ways to keep their attention,” she said.

“Sometimes it’s challenging but it’s rewarding when you see the progress.”

Although Anoee has been teaching for more than 30 years she isn’t showing any signs of showing down. She said she loves what she does and working with the students keeps her busy.

“Sometimes I feel like I’m ready but then again as long as I’m able-bodied I don’t think I want to retire. There’s just so much to do,” she said.

“Sometimes it is tiring and challenging, but the reward of seeing the change is awesome.”

Iglulik Co-Op, Baker Lake daycare, Iqaluit weather station impacted by flames this year

This week is Fire Prevention Week in both Canada and the United States, a week of which to take note and remember ways to prevent fires, which can often cause great damage and result in injury as well as financial loss.

Iglulik Co-op - Jan. 20 Fire tore through the Iglulik Co-op on Jan. 20, putting one of the community’s two grocery stores out of commission.

“The building is a complete loss,” said Landis Carmichael, deputy fire chief of Iqaluit Emergency Services, who also described seeing a column of smoke rising into the sky as their crew approached Iglulik to assist.

Soon after the Co-op quickly renovated its convenience store within the community, turning it into a mini grocery store and maximizing the limited space they had.

On Aug. 4, charges were laid on two young males in relation to the Iglulik Co-op fire, the names and ages of those charged were not revealed.

Baffin Correctional Centre - March 18 On March 18 at around 3 p.m. a blaze evacuated inmates and staff at Baffin Correctional Centre (BCC), no injuries were reported.

While the damage to the building wasn’t significant, the fallout from the fire saw the need for 60 prisoners to be moved out of the capital. Thirty were sent to other Nunavut correctional facilities and another 30 were sent down south to the Joyceville Institution in Kingston, Ont. At this time BCC is being renovated and is going to be folded into the larger, newer Aaqqigiarvik Correctional Healing Facility, where it will be turned into programming space, additional offices and it will also serve as a new, larger kitchen for the rest of Aaqqigiarvik.

Iqaluit, upper air weather station operations building - April 5 On April 5, the Iqaluit Fire Department responded to a fire west of the Iqaluit Airport at the Environment and Climate Change Canada’s (ECCC) Upper Air weather station operations building, a flame which ended up completely engulfing the

The fallout from this fire led to ECCC temporarily suspending its upper air monitoring program in Nunavut’s capital at the time. No injuries were reported, a smaller building has since been erected in its place.

Baker Lake daycare - Aug. 17 The Baker Lake Fire Department was called at around 2:30 a.m. to the Baker Lake daycare, which was destroyed in a late night fire on Aug. 17.

“As soon as I saw the flames I knew I had to go live,” said Baker Lake resident Freddie Oovayuk who recorded the fire on his phone.

Other incidents this past year There was a small fire at the DJ Specialties store in Lower Iqaluit on the morning of May 12, emergency services responded quickly and the store was open again the next day.

On May 18 the Baker Lake Fire Department responded to a fire that broke out at the Magnetic Observatory, by the time the police arrived on scene the blaze was extinguished.

There was a ‘suspicious fire’ which took place at a home in Kinngait on June 8, which saw moderate damage to the house according to the Kinngait RCMP. No injuries were reported.

woke up to a fire on July 7 in the 2200 neighbourhood in Iqaluit, the fire was contained quickly according to the City of Iqaluit thanks to the quick action of neighbours with multiple fire extinguishers. At the time, the City advised people to keep exterior stairs, landings and fire escapes clear.

Walk from Four Corners to Iqaluit Square held

Iqalummiut look at legacy of residential schools on new national holiday

The first annual National Day for Truth and Reconciliation, also known as Orange Shirt Day is Canada’s newest federal statutory holiday, it is a day meant to honour the victims and survivors of residential schools, their families and communities.

It is also meant to serve as a public commemoration of the legacy of residential schools, the creation of this day was made through a bill in Parliament, Bill C-5, which received Royal Assent on June 3.

Premier Joe Savikataaq wrote a brief statement saying Sept. 30 is “about listening, learning, growing, working and committing to better.”

In a joint statement, Carolyn Bennett, minister of Crown-Indigenous relations, Jonathan Wilkinson, minister of Parks Canada and environment and climate change Canada, David Lametti, minister of justice/attorney general, Steven Guilbeault, minister of Canadian heritage, Dan Vandal, minister of northern affairs and Marc Miller, minister of Indigenous services said, that on this day, “all Canadians have the opportunity to come together to ensure that we commemorate the history and recognize the harmful legacy of residential schools.

“Residential schools are a shameful part

of damaging racist and colonial policies that removed First Nations, Inuit and Metis children from their communities families, languages and cultures,” the statement read.

On Wednesday afternoon, Nunavut Tunngavik Incorporated (NTI) and the Qikiqtani Inuit Association (QIA) organized a Sept. 30 walk in the capital, walking from the Igluvut Building to Iqaluit Square. At 1:30 there was a moment of silence and soon after the walk began, with Iqalummiut donning orange shirts in commemoration of the stolen Indigenous children who never found their way back home.

“It’s incredible to see such a large sea of orange. We really appreciate how important this day is, it’s the inaugural day of Truth and Reconciliation. We all have been affected, all of us, whether we’ve been to residential school, whether our parents have been to residential school, whether our grandparents have been to residential school.

Each and everyone of us has been impacted,” said Aluki Kotierk, president of NTI. The event saw around 500 people, many of whom were wearing orange shirts, join in the walk - one of the biggest gatherings in Iqaluit this year.

There were 14 residential schools in what is now Nunavut, operating from 1955 to 1995.

Nunavummiut are no strangers to community spirit and working together to get things done. This is exemplified in Nunavut’s cadre of firefighters, a great many of whom are volunteers.

It was a group of dedicated volunteers that responded to the fire in Iglulik that ravaged the Co-op in January, working heroically in the bitter cold for 12 hours before help arrived from the capital.

Local Rangers assisted with crowd control as a growing number of residents arrived at the scene.

Firefighters flew in from Iqaluit to assist in controlling the fire — a continued example of co-operation between communities, as in 2018 when firefighters from Kinngait and Pangnirtung came to Iqaluit when the NorthMart warehouse was fully engulfed in flames.

Iglulik has only a single fire engine — a 1999 model — the municipality’s four water trucks were also pressed into service during that incident. The vehicle froze while responding to the fire around 2 p.m., unable to withstand the -40 C temperatures.

That fire truck is due to be replaced in 2022, a little past the Office of the

Fire Marshal’s stated life expectancy of 20 years for such emergency vehicles in Nunavut. The office has released a replacement schedule, from 2020 to 2028, at a rate of two vehicles per year for community fire trucks across Nunavut “based primarily on age and condition.”

Grassroots operations are the backbone of many successful Nunavut organizations, and emergency services are unfortunately no exception.

Mark Wyatt, fire chief in Rankin Inlet, said last year that his department reached the point where it was fundraising about $200,000 per year, raising more than $500,000 under his watch.

Those funds went toward things like uniforms for all members, building garages, and replacing equipment that the Office of the Fire Marshal couldn’t supply.

“Anything, equipment-wise, that we can’t get from the Office of the Fire Marshal we buy ourselves,” Wyatt said.

“We’re going to start raising money to go towards an aerial truck. Our original fire marshal said there’s no way we’re ever going to get a ladder truck in Rankin, yet we have three-storey build-

ings here that you wouldn’t even be allowed to build down south without the proper fire protection.”

That particular piece of equipment will run the community $650,000 to $1 million.

Still, Wyatt had nothing but praise to offer his team, with everyone in the department working toward common goals.

Rankin Inlet also opened a new fire training facility last year, with plans to offer courses from the Office of the Fire Marshal and to develop advanced livefire courses to better prepare firefighters across the territory for the sorts of structure fires they may encounter.

This is of great benefit to the entire territory. To be able to offer this level of training without having to go down south is an achievement that will empower anyone interested in learning such a vital trade.

And let’s not forget that our first responders are often the first to lend a helping hand in keeping community spirits high, leading parades throughout the pandemic for birthdays and other special events, creating outdoor rinks and working hard to make a difference wherever they can.

Pressure MLA candidates for union talks, NEU leader urges Last collective agreement expired three years ago; strike vote ‘next step’

The Nunavut Employees Union (NEU) is urging its members to pressure MLA candidates for a new collective agreement as the last one expired three years ago as of Sept. 30.

The next step after that will be a strike vote, union president Bill Fennell said.

The NEU hasn’t gone on strike during the COVID-19 pandemic despite enduring the longest period without a negotiated agreement in the organization’s history.

“Putting the public at risk by pulling service … ethically, it wouldn’t be right,” Fennell said, explaining the reluctance to take job action over the past year and a half. “Is it OK now?

That’s questionable. But they (the Government of Nunavut) have not given us any more choices at this point.”

The union represents more than 5,000 workers, or about one out of every eight Nunavummiut, which the NEU describes as a “sizeable voting group” heading into the Oct. 25 territorial election.

“Hopefully there will be a more compassionate group of MLAs in the next government,” said Fennell.

“The ridiculous thing is that the people that they’re hurting … are their brothers and sisters, parents, neighbours, cousins. Those are the people who are working and providing quality public service and getting nothing in return.”

The NEU and the GN are not far apart on wages — approximately one per cent, according to Fennell — but

remain at loggerheads over Northern allowance, and the union wants five paid days off for government employees who suffer from incidents of domestic violence. The GN currently offers up to 17 weeks of leave in such circumstances, but all unpaid.

The Northern allowance, which helps cover the cost of living in the territory, hasn’t increased in 13 years, Fennell said. A mediator tried to bring the two parties to a resolution on Oct. 28, 2019 but the GN changed its Northern allowance offer to $16.5 million in total, far less than the $33.8 million proposed months earlier. The government claimed the previous offer was so much higher due to a mathematical error, according to Fennell.

“You can’t offer something and then take it away. If they made a mistake then they should have eaten it,” he said. “I don’t see how any judge in any courtroom in this country could say that’s good-faith bargaining.”

Furthermore, Fennell said the government’s proposed hike in Northern allowance would disproportionately benefit the Qikiqtani region, leaving the Kivalliq and Kitikmeot with sparse gains.

“Giving stuff to one region and not the others, that’s clearly an attempt to divide the membership,” he asserted.

“Now they’re trying to drive a wedge between the members. We can’t allow it.”

The union filed a statement of claim against the GN in the Nunavut Court of Justice in November 2019, accusing the territorial government of violating the Public Service Act by bargaining in bad faith. The lawsuit seeks $50,000 in damages for allegedly failing to

COVID-19 has caused delays in the legal process because the courts are backlogged. However, the parties were at an impasse prior to the pandemic, the NEU president noted.

The union has been open to binding arbitration but the GN has been opposed, Fennell said.

“They don’t want it because what they’re doing is unfair and unjust, and they know that an arbitrator is going to

give the union more,” he contended.

Human Resources Minister David Akeeagok was asked in the legislative assembly on Sept. 14 about entering into binding arbitration to settle a collective agreement.

“Having reached a negotiated agreement is an outcome that we want to see,” he said. “Having been told to go through the arbitration, which basically you’re being told what to do, is not the right way.”

Akeeagok encouraged the NEU to return to the bargaining table.

“They’re waiting on a court case.

They don’t want to sit with us until that court case is done. That has dragged on far too long and I encourage them to come back. We’re prepared. We’re ready to have an agreement with our collective agreements,” the minister said. “I do applaud our hard-working public service and I hope that we do come up with a collective agreement that both parties can agree to.”

The union doesn’t yet have a date for the resumption of its legal action against the GN. Fennell’s position as president is up for election on Oct. 7.

Inuk author Suzie Napayok-Short speaks about releasing her second children’s book Published in 2020, Kits, Cubs, and Calves meant to help kids learn about how wildlife sustains itself

Iqaluit-born and Yellowknife-based author Suzie Napayok-Short has published two children’s books since 2015, the year her first children’s book Wild Eggs was published.

Her second book geared toward a younger audience, Kits, Cubs, and Calves: An Arctic Summer, was published on Sept. 1, 2020, right as the second wave of COVID-19 was beginning to rise.

“It was a scary time last September about a year ago, I was also battling cancer and I continued working on it to keep my mind off my cancer. It probably would have been better-known

had there been no pandemic,” she said.

Nonetheless, she has had friends and colleagues praise Kits, Cubs, and Calves, and while she couldn’t host a book signing this time around, it was encouraging to see the reception.

“People would say how much they love the book and I find it was well-received, it was just not the same as the publication of Wild Eggs,” Napayok-Short said.

“The illustrations are interesting to look at, we tried to present different views from my mind and we had a really good illustrator,” she added.

Montreal artist Tamara Campeau worked on the book’s illustrations.

The book is about a girl named Akuluk who is visiting her family in Nunavut. Surrounded by her family

on her uncle’s boat, Akuluk gets to experience the sights, sounds, and animals of the ocean and along the coastline.

With each animal they encounter, they also see a family, including a polar bear and her cubs, a family of belugas and an arctic fox with her kits.

Kits, Cubs, and Calves, Napayok-Short says, is meant to help kids learn about how wildlife sustains itself.

“If you take a really close look it’s very similar to how we try to survive too. They have their own ways of caring for their babies,” she said.

Kits, Cubs, and Calves: An Arctic Summer was published by Inhabit Media and can be found on their website and other sites books are sold online.

Iqaluit Bernice Clarke, the owner of Uasau Soap Inc. has emerged as the territorial winner from the Indigenous entrepreneur competition Pow Wow Pitch. The territorial, US and Youth semi-finals were live-streamed

by Pow Wow Pitch on Sept. 25.

Ten business owners from across the North took part in the semi-finals, including five Nunavummiut, mostly from the capital.

For winning the semi-finals, Clarke has won $500, along with runners-up Emily Joanasie, owner of Miqsuqta! in Iqaluit, and Joella Hogan of Yukon Soaps (Nacho Nyak Dun First Nation).

“As Inuit, we are reclaiming our traditional wisdom and strength and reconnecting with our ancestors in the modern world,” said Clarke.

Joanasie hopes to use the prize money to contribute and invest toward the online end of her business.

Nunavut limits exemptions for isolation to only fully vaccinated people

Nunavut On September 27, the Government of Nunavut’s Department of Health announced it will be limiting travel exemptions for unvaccinated workers, this will include workers who have yet to receive a second dose of a Government of Canada approved COVID-19 vaccine.

Previously it was possible for outside workers to forgo isolation in a southern isolation hub under a worker exemption, now the only circumstances partially vaccinated or unvaccinated workers can come to Nunavut is when there’s a sudden and severe damage to critical infrastructure, or if you can’t get vaccinated for any of the medical reasons approved by the Government of Canada.

“As vaccines are widely available in Southern Canada, workers now have the option to get vaccinated,” said Dr. Michael Patterson, Nunavut’s chief public health officer. “Minimizing the number of unvaccinated workers traveling to the territory on exemptions will help reduce the risks of COVID-19 coming to Nunavut.”

2021 Cape Dorset Annual Print Collection released

Kinngait The West Baffin Eskimo Cooperative on Sept. 21 announced the launch its 62nd Cape Dorset Annual Print Collection.

This year’s collection features 32 prints by Kinngait artists Saimaiyu Akesuk, Pee Ashevak, Ohito Ashoona, Shuvinai Ashoona, Olooreak Etungat, Nuna Parr, Malaija Pootoogook, Quvianaqtuk Pudlat, Qiatsuk Ragee, Ooloosie Saila, Pitaloosie Saila, Padloo Samayualie and Ningiukulu Teevee.

Nunavut On Sept. 28 the Government of Nunavut highlighted World Rabies Day, rabies is a preventable but deadly virus which can infect animals and humans. Many animals can carry rabies, including foxes, wolves

and dogs. The virus is passed on when an infected animal bites, scratches or licks an open wound.

For Nunavummiut, the greatest risk when it comes to catching rabies is from domestic dogs.

Rabies awareness and safety tips include: - Don’t tease dogs - Do not approach or feed dogs you do not know - Avoid stray dogs - Supervise children around dogs - Vaccinate your pet regularly - Keep your pets tied on a leash/chain when outside - Contact your local health centre immediately when bit or scratched by an animal that may have rabies.

A Nunavut man who pleaded guilty to two charges of sexual interference, one charge of indecent exposure, one charge of sexual assault and one charge of possession of child pornography has been sentenced to 845 days in jail.

The man’s identity and the community in which the offences occurred cannot be revealed in order to protect the victims and complainants.

The offences occurred between September 2018 and June 2020.

At the age of 28, while his girlfriend’s nine-year-old daughter was sleeping with her brother in the grandmother’s room, he touched the girl on her bum.

More than a year later, a 10-year-old victim told the RCMP that the offender had touched her on two occasions, once

in the vaginal area, on top of her clothing, the second time on her bum.

Several months after that, the man pulled down his pants and held his penis in front of a 10-year-old victim while at his girlfriend’s home.

About a month later, the offender touched his cousin’s vagina while she was sleeping.

After the man was arrested, his common-law partner informed police of disturbing pictures on a laptop he used. The police obtained a search warrant, seized the computer and found 192 pornographic images of children. Some of the pictures were downloaded from the internet while others were taken in Nunavut.

“The images generated in Nunavut are 15 images of an erect male penis near the hands or face of young children,” the Nunavut Court of Justice sentencing document states. Only one of the child victims in those particular images could be identified.

provided a statement to the court that reveals she “is clearly traumatized and experiences ongoing fear as a consequence of the offence.”

The offender is now 31 years old and he’s a Grade 12 graduate. He worked for a mining company as a driller’s helper and working on DEW line site cleanup. He has a teenage daughter from a previous relationship. She lives with her grandmother.

He divulged to the court that he was sexually abused beginning at age seven by an older female, who later became his common-law partner.

“It may be that this sexual activity at such a young age impacted on (the offender’s) perception of what is normal for young children and what constitutes an appropriate relationship, but I am unable to make that link without further information,” Justice Susan Cooper stated.

He has been in jail for over a year while awaiting the conclusion of his criminal court case. This is his first time in custody.

Cooper ordered him to serve 455 days for possession of child pornography, 180 days for committing sexual assault, 90 days for each of the sexual interference charges and 30 days for the indecent exposure.

The guilty party’s 434 days in jail as of his Aug. 19 sentencing earned him 651 days credit for being in pretrial custody. He had 194 days left to serve of

his sentence.

He will be on probation for one year after he gets out of jail and will not be allowed any contact with the victims.

For a period of 10 years, he will not be permitted to be around anyone under age 16 or use the internet unless a sober, responsible adult is present in either circumstance.

He must also submit a DNA sample under the Sexual Offender Information Registration Act.

Outgoing Nunavut MP accuses premier of ‘major intimidation tactics,’ which Savikataaq denies; restates skepticism of Jones’ Inuk identity

Outgoing Nunavut member of Parliament Mumilaaq Qaqqaq accused Premier Joe Savikataaq of using “major intimidation tactics” in a Facebook post on Sept. 26.

Savikataaq says he’s shocked at the allegation, which he denies.

Shortly after midnight on Sunday, Qaqqaq stated that about six months after she took office as MP, Savikataaq started emailing her outside of work, attempting to make her feel “unknowledgeable and not knowing what ‘the GN has done for the territory.’”

She said if she forgot to tell her staff to put “federal” in front of “government” in a communique, Savikataaq “was immediately messaging me or my office, extremely upset,” even though she insists that she never intended to make implications about the GN. She added that the New Democratic Party (NDP) “never backed me enough to feel safe enough to speak truth. I couldn’t ever be my complete self in my term if I wanted to be re-elected… so much makes me anxious.”

Savikataaq says there is no validity to Qaqqaq’s assertions against him.

“I want to assure Nunavummiut this is not the case,” he told Nunavut News. “All correspondence with Ms. Qaqqaq have been in a professional capacity, through our respective offices… I did write to her about the Government of Nunavut (GN)’s response to COVID-19, and the ways the GN communicated with Nunavummiut throughout the pandemic. I also wrote about our government’s vaccine roll out early this year, when they were first approved and ready for distribution.”

The premier, who will serve another term as Arviat South MLA by acclimation, said he’s made a point of being accessible to Nunavummiut, including Qaqqaq.

“I would have welcomed the opportunity to hear from Ms. Qaqqaq about her concerns directly, instead of using social media to spread concerning and incorrect information,” he stated.

Rekindling a past quarrel In a separate post in the wee hours of Sunday morning, Qaqqaq revisited a battle she had with Labrador Liberal MP Yvonne Jones, whom she accused of not being an Inuk.

That dispute seemingly ended on April 22 when Qaqqaq apologized to Jones after demanding that Jones “validate your Inukness.”

Qaqqaq wrote on Sept 26: “(NDP leader) Jagmeet (Singh) and NDP refused to back me in the Yvonne Jones situation.

You all saw my break down in April. It was because NDP would not back me up and let Yvonne Jones bully me in many ways. Work wise and personal. Still I’m intimidated by her by her even tho [sic] she’s so in the wrong it’s completely disgusting.”

Qaqqaq took two mental health breaks while serving as Nunavut’s MP: once for several weeks in late 2020 and later for a couple of weeks in late April, following the controversy with Jones.

“I didn’t run again for many reasons. Mostly because I didn’t feel safe,” Qaqqaq wrote in her Sept. 26 Facebook post.

The NDP didn’t comment on the situations involving Savikataaq and Jones, instead sending a statement reading: “The NDP worked hard to support Mumilaaq Qaqqaq as a candidate and as a member of Parliament. We believe that the House of Commons and every political party must do more to get Indigenous people elected and support them in those roles. We are committed to continuing this work.”

As of press deadline, Qaqqaq didn’t respond to further questions about the conflicts with Savikataaq or Jones.

Neither was there a reply from Jones’ office.

The Canadian Coast Guard’s inshore rescue boat station has wrapped up another successful season in Rankin Inlet.

The program was started four years ago as a way to serve communities as far North as Chesterfield Inlet and as far south as Whale Cove, while encouraging Indigenous students from across Canada to get experience working for the Coast Guard.

The Rankin Inlet team is made up of two crews of four, a total of eight students, six of whom are Indigenous including two Inuit.

“Those students have been very important in teaching Inuktitut,” said Emma Moore, senior officer with the Coast Guard’s Search and Rescue program.

This summer the station was operational from June 16 to Sept.

7. The students completed pre-season training in Perry Sound from May 3 to May 30 before relocating to Rankin Inlet where they received electronic navigational training, medical training, and courses on local knowledge.

Most of their training is based on being prepared for any situation which might arise, according to Moore. The students also spent a great deal of time learning about popular hunting places and safe havens where they can go in the case of an emergency.

“A lot of the areas are uncharted, so they’ll go in their and mark them themselves. We mark them for ourselves because we obviously don’t have the ability to say there’s a shoal here,” said Moore.

“We have a partnership with the Canadian hydrographic services.

They have had chips into our vessels. They track all of our data on the vessel. Basically we’re doing a sounding for them. They use that data to update the charts for the area.”

Koonoo Arreak-Mackey was one of the two Inuit students to be a part of the team this summer. The 21-year-old from Kuujjuaq

was returning for her second year after taking part in the program last summer.

“I enjoy being out on the land and the water and helping people.

It’s a pretty fun summer job,” she said.

Arreak-Mackey said that COVID-19 restrictions made it more difficult to work with the community last summer.

“It was still really interesting to get on the water and go on all these adventures and see all this land around Rankin,” she said.

“This summer the restrictions weren’t as harsh so it was really nice to be able to get know people in the community and get involved.”

In total the crew carried out carried out a total of four training exercises, one of which was a joint exercise with the Rankin Inlet Fire Department.

“We would task them to search for a an overdue vessel, then they would come across the person in the water and then they would do a person in water recovery, then they would treat them, then package them for transport then do a hand-off on shore for EMS.” The crews also had to respond to three real life search and rescue scenarios this summer.

“They have responded to calls every year. So they work together as a team to make sure the outcome is as beneficial as possible,” said Moore.

Although the details of the calls are confidential, Arreak-Mackey said having to perform actual rescues comes with the territory.

“It’s stressful but it’s also an adrenaline rush when you get on the water. And it’s really rewarding to help people and they’re really grateful for you and the program,” she said.

Moore said the Coast Guard is hoping it can recruit some students from the Kivalliq to get involved in the program for next summer.

As someone who has done it twice Arreak-Mackey said it’s worth it to put your name forward.

“It will take a little bit of time to get through all the application forms but it’s totally worth it in the end. It’s fun to meet new people and cultures from across Canada.”

Running and putting for a good cause Arctic Bay hosts annual golf tournament and run in support of Terry Fox

They say that in life, there are only two guarantees: death and taxes.

In Arctic Bay, there is a third and that involves helping continue the legacy of the late Terry Fox. The community hosted two events earlier this month: the Terry Fox Run itself on Sept. 19, joining thousands of other communities around Canada, and the annual golf tournament, which brought together nine players to play the sand course.

The golf tournament usually takes place the day of the run but Thomas Levi, Arctic Bay’s recreation co-ordinator, said it had to be held one day early due to narwhals near the community, which also explained why there were less players in the tournament than last year.

To enter the golf tournament, players had to pay a $10 entry fee but Levi said some players paid $20 and when everything was tallied up, $130 was raised while the run added an extra $96 for a grand total of $226.

Jack Willie, last year’s champion golfer, began the tournament with a speech and then hit the ceremonial first drive to officially begin play. Willie wouldn’t lift the trophy this year; that honour went to Tagoona Willie as he got the trophy and a brand new set of tools donated by the Taqqut Co-op. Dominic Qaqqasiq finished

second and got himself a $100 gift card to the Co-op while Jack Willie ended up in third, winning a 15-gallon gas slip.

The tournament also has a fun prize for the last-place finisher, usually a honeybucket, but Levi said there were none available this year.

That meant some improvisation was needed so instead of the traditional prize, Levi Barnabas won a five-gallon gas slip and a toilet seat.

When the players finished up their round, Levi said everyone tucked into some Arctic char and maktak, cooked with heather plants, along with some boiled tea courtesy of Irene Willie and Crystal Natanine.

In addition to the donated prizes from the Co-op, Levi said GoldTech, the company which operates the sealift each year, donated a set of golf balls and a hat to each player while the foundation itself sent plenty of T-shirts for both the golfers and runners.

As for the run, it began on the afternoon of the 19th and Levi said a fire truck went around reminding people that the run was happening.

Everyone who took part in the run got themselves some temporary tattoos, a ribbon and a certificate saying they completed the run. Hand sanitizers were made available at both the start and finish line and everyone got a bottle of water once they finished.

Levi said 70 people registered to take part and for the first time in a long time, it didn’t snow on run day but the cold conditions were still there.

Seventy Kivalliqmiut will have the chance to take in a CFL game in Winnipeg to mark Canada’s first ever National Day for Truth and Reconciliation.

In September the Winnipeg Blue Bombers, together with the Assembly of Manitoba Chiefs (AMC), Exchange Income Corporation (EIC), and the Edmonton Elks, announced a partnership to mark the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation.

At the Blue Bombers Oct. 8 home game against the Edmonton Elks, 1,000 members of the Indigenous community will be flown in and hosted for the game.

Seventy tickets have been allocated to the Kivalliq with 10 tickets available to each of the seven communities in the region.

This invitation is being extended to residential school survivors in the Kivalliq Region, and to children 12 and over who are vaccinated.

Although the National Day

for Truth and Reconciliation is scheduled to take place on Sept. 30 the game will happen on Oct. 8.

During the pre-game warm-up the Blue Bombers and the Elks will wear special orange New Era jerseys to recognize Orange Shirt Day. The jerseys will be made available for an online auction after the game, with funds raised donated to each team’s charity of choice.

The Bombers have chosen Winnipeg Aboriginal Sport Achievement Centre (WASAC), a foundation that helps to remove barriers for thousands of children annually and is Canada’s largest employer for Indigenous children and youth. The Elks will be donating proceeds to Spirit North, a national charitable organization dedicated to improving the health and wellness of Indigenous children and youth through the transformative power of sport and play.

Kivalliq residents that qualify to attend the game can apply for tickets on the Kivalliq Inuit Association’s website.
