Up until this summer Cynthia Tunguak had never worked with seal skin. Being from Baker Lake, Nunavut’s only inland community, Tunguak said the marine mammal isn’t traditionally used as a material for making clothing. That changed after she attended the Somebody’s Daughter program in Rankin Inlet this summer.

“It was a good learning experience,” Tunguak said.

Somebody’s Daughter was developed by Rankin Inlet’s Bernadette Dean when she was the social development co-ordinator for the Kivalliq Inuit Association in 2003.

The idea behind the program is to empower women who may have experienced intergenerational trauma as a result of residential schools.

Dean, who returned to help with the program as an instructor this year, said the goal is to mix traditional skills with more modern forms of healing like journaling and group discussions.

“The Elders at the time wanted to teach traditional skills and we incorporated the literacy and writing as healing components,” she said. “With the exercises we use we

ask them to focus on their early memories, the good and the bad ones. When you’re honest with yourself they’re very effective in helping you heal.”

Tunguak said the experience of working on the kamik and getting to talk with the other women was beneficial for her.

“There’s been lots of healing and lots of laughs,” she said. “We talked about what we’ve been through, how we grew up and what we’re planning for the future.”

The women came from every community in the Kivalliq and were as young as 19 all the way up to 63 years old.

This year’s program was held in two phases. During the first phase, which ran from July 13 to 22, women from the region travelled to Rankin Inlet where they learned how to prepare seal skin.

“I’m a total inlander so I didn’t like the smell but it was a good learning experience,” said Tunguak.

During the second phase which ran from Aug. 13 to 22 the women worked on making the kamik. Although it didn’t smell as bad, Tunguak said that sewing the bottoms of the kamik was the hardest part of the workshop.

“When I first started I almost cried. I had to keep taking it apart,” she said.

Dean said the between working on the

kamik and sharing stories, the program can get pretty intense. However, by working through the process together the women end up building a support network.

“It can be very emotional but it’s very rewarding when you’re in touch with your culture,” she said.

Former MLA for Iqaluit-Niaqunnguu and territorial health minister Pat Angnakak is running

under the Liberal banner for the upcoming federal election on Sept. 20. She is seeking to turn the seat back to red following Mumilaaq Qaqqaq’s win for the NDP in 2019.

Among her priorities if elected

are housing, mental health, senior care and food security.

As to why she chose the Liberals, she cites continued federal investments toward Nunavut despite not having a seat at the table, such as Iqaluit’s deep-sea port.

“Over the last few years, Nunavut has not had a voice at that table and still the Liberal government’s eye was on Nunavut.”

Housing The biggest matter on Angnakak’s plate, she says, is largely housing. A matter which has received quite a bit of attention from Liberal leadership.

On Aug. 30, during a very brief visit to Iqaluit, Liberal leader and prime minister Justin Trudeau announced a $360 million housing investment for Nunavut as part of a national $2-billion commitment towards Indigenous housing in Canada.

When it comes to her overall approach to housing, working with other Nunavut groups is one path forward.

“I have some ideas on how we can approach this, I really do believe that partnerships are the way to go. We have more than 3,000 units that are needed,”

Angnakak said.

She also hopes to develop a strategy alongside the government of Nunavut and regional Inuit Organizations. Angnakak sees it as a problem for all Nunavummiut which should be addressed by Nunavummiut.

“I think everybody’s priority in Nunavut is housing, it affects everybody very personally. It’s something that needs to be addressed.”

Mental health, Nutrition North and senior care Another matter she hopes to address if elected is mental health supports in Nunavut.

“Everyone knows in Nunavut that we have a lot of people that require help and they have no place to go.”

She’d like to see a more local approach outside of Iqaluit alongside the new Nunavut Recovery Centre, Angnakak says, with wellness hubs at the community level.

Better access to healthcare is also going to be one of Angnakak’s priorities, particularly when it comes to expanded home care service for seniors and even more so for those who have de-

mentia, “where our Elders with dementia can be cared for in Nunavut and not be sent away.”

Angnakak’s plan for food security includes expanded school food programs with more community involvement.

“This needs to be done in conjunction with the community. It would be great to get parents involved with feeding their own children at the school,” said Angnakak.

She also wants to see Nutrition North overhauled, to find out how it can work better for Nunavummiut.

Residential schools This summer, starting in Kamloops on May 20, ongoing searches continue to locate bodies of children at former residential school grounds all over the country.

“I really feel deeply for people who are going through that, for people who lost loved ones and didn’t know where they were,” Angnakak said.

Angnakak says she believes further investigation is needed, but also discussion on where to go from here and what the path to healing looks like.

NDP candidate Lori Idlout says Nunavut is ready for better Liberals making ‘same promises as before’

Lori Idlout is seeking to be the next MP for Nunavut under the NDP banner, having won the candidacy Aug. 10 as outgoing NDP MP Mumilaaq Qaqqaq chose not to run again.

Originally from Iglulik, Idlout is a practicing lawyer and business owner, having represented the Nuluujaat Land Guardians when Baffinland filed an injunction against their protests at Mary River Mine. She also has been elected to the Iqaluit District Education Authority Board twice.

The NDP’s slogan in this election is Ready for Better, which comes with promises of better healthcare, action for climate change, reconciliation, inclusion, and infrastructure.

Ready for Better, Idlout says, is Canada’s and Nunavut’s best path forward.

“We’ve heard too many broken promises by the Liberals and Conservatives. With Ready For Better we’re stating why we’re the best party to govern, based on our commitments to have more supports for communities, not focusing on making the rich rich, but taxing them,” she said.

She adds she wants to bring better resources and services in priority areas, “like more housing, renovating and retrofitting existing housing. Making more housing available for seniors and addressing the mold crisis.”

Playing to strengths Infrastructure, environmental protection and better access to water are also among Idlout’s priorities, among these infrastructure plans she specifically mentioned improving internet access for Nunavummiut.

While representing Nunavut can be a challenge with just one representative, Idlout

says she plans to focus on a “strengths-based approach” to shift the conversation on who Nunavummiut are.

“Nunavummiut have great strengths,” said Idlout, “being able to thrive in the Arctic and making sure (our) strength (is used when) we’re negotiating with the federal government, rather than Nunavummiut basically begging for more resources and more services.

“We’ve got to acknowledge the federal government also wants resources from us, that puts us more in a position of power.”

Idlout has been campaigning steadily since August, visiting various communities including Iglulik, Pond Inlet, Clyde River, Pangnirtung, Rankin Inlet, Kinngait and Iqaluit. She has further plans to visit Arviat and Baker Lake, along with more visits to Rankin and Iqaluit.

On Aug. 30, Liberal leader and prime minister Justin Trudeau visited Iqaluit, the first federal leader to do so, making promises to invest in mental health and a $360 million promise for housing in the territory. Promises that were both hollow and familiar to Idlout.

“For him to repeat the same promises again is disappointing,” she said, “it’s frustrating, it’s still not enough for Nunavummiut.”

“I was given figures when I was in Pang (on Sept. 2),” she said. “Those figures that were given to us by the Liberals would result in three new units per year in Pangnirtung … they’ve got at least 50 people on waiting lists.

“They’re promising Nunavummiut will remain on waiting lists.”

While representing Nunavut in Ottawa is expected to be a tough job, Idlout has complete confidence the NDP will be supporting her and Nunavummiut while in the south.

“I’ll have great colleagues to support me and to make sure we have better supports and benefits coming back to Nunavut,” she said.

Conservative principles align with Inuit values, MacKenzie says Housing crisis, mental health, Elders care and resource royalties among MP candidate’s priorities

Rankin Inlet’s Laura MacKenzie says she plans to fight for all Nunavummiut if she is voted in as the next MP for Nunavut in the Sept. 20 federal election.

MacKenzie was announced as the candidate for the Conservative Party on Aug. 16.

In her campaign launch speech, MacKenzie said she decided to run for the Conservatives because the party’s values align with Inuit ones.

“The similarity between Inuit Qaujimajatuqangit and Conservative principles is why I chose to run as a Conservative,” she said. “Inuit believed in pijitsirniq, which means ‘to serve others in order to improve the common good.’ This aligns with the Conservative Party’s belief in representing all northern Canadians.”

Among the issues she hopes to address, if elected, are Nunavut’s housing crisis, mental health, Elders care and sharing of resource royalties.

In an interview with Kivalliq News, MacKenzie said tackling the housing crisis will require a multi-faceted approach.

One of her suggestions is to hire more workers in the North in order to lower the construction costs for new home builds. She also said she would like to see more communal retirement homes built in the territory. Offering care earlier for Elders would allow them to transition into a space where they are comfortable before they develop critical health issues, she said. It would also have the added benefit of freeing up more homes for younger generations.

“Before they get into a high level of care, they should be able to live together. It would be similar to retirement homes down south,” she said.

One of her biggest plans is to keep more resource royalties in Nunavut. She said this would give Nunavummiut more control over funding and would make more money available for infrastructure and housing.

“If it’s our money and it’s in our territory, we’re

going to be careful,” she said. “It’s all about devolution and bringing that back to Nunavut.”

In order to address Nunavut’s mental health gaps, MacKenzie said culturally sensitive resident counsellors need to be available to provide around-the-clock support to those in need.

“I really believe if we can do trauma-informed therapy delivered by Inuit in a culturally sensitive way, I think it would really work,” she said.

When it comes mandatory vaccinations, MacKenzie said while she is vaccinated and recommends others do so, she’s in favour of allowing people to make their own choice.

“You can’t force people,” she said. “Remember there was a whole residential school system where people were forced. I don’t believe in that.”

With the growing number of graves being uncovered at former residential school sites, MacKenzie said she would like to look into the possibility of offering funding to Nunavummiut who want to visit the graves of people buried

outside the territory.

“There might be families that might want to visit their remains. There might be patients that had TB, who left and never saw their family. We have to look at that moving forward and say what will we do collectively to make sure that a person can visit that grave,” she said, adding that such visits would go hand in hand with trauma-informed therapy.

MacKenzie has more than 15 years experience working for the territorial government, most of which has been in her role as director of economic development and transportation.

She has also run several small businesses in addition to being involved with several non-profits, including Rankin Inlet daycare and shelter.

MacKenzie said her experience with government and running a business make her well-suited to get things done in Ottawa.

“It’s all about being able to sell what you want to do,” she said. “It’s being able to pitch as a politician but also as an insider from within.”

10 and only one week to go before e-day, it’s important that we look at our priorities as individuals and as a territory in the lens of the swiftly-arriving federal election.

Inuit Tapiriit Kanatami (ITK) sent their Christmas list to the candidates, Aug. 24. Topping that is the completion of the Inuit Nunangat Policy and implementation of it within the first three months of a new government taking office.

The organization lists many recommendations, including building on existing COVID-19 relief measures and introducing new poverty reduction measures, addressing violence amid and against Indigenous communities and in the healthcare system, as well as for the government to “pledge major new and sustained investment in Inuit Nunangat to uphold Canada’s human rights obligations and support economic development.”

The most pressing part of all these issues is that all potential solutions must be Inuit-led and respectful of Inuit self-determination and governance.

The interconnected effects of the housing crisis affect food security, mental health, suicide risk, healthcare related to tuberculosis and

COVID-19 and more, so it is no surprise to see that as a major plank in each party’s campaign platform.

Liberal candidate Pat Angnakak said during the prime minister’s Aug. 30 visit to the capital that “We all know very, very well what our housing needs are,” and believes partnerships with other Nunavut-based groups are the way forward to deal with the deficit of more than 3,000 housing units.

NDP candidate Lori Idlout wants to bring better resources and services in priority areas, “like more housing, renovating and retrofitting existing housing. Making more housing available for seniors and addressing the mold crisis.”

Rankin Inlet’s Laura MacKenzie, who is running as the Conservative Party’s rep, said tackling the housing crisis will require a multi-faceted approach.

She said she would like to see more communal retirement homes built in the territory to better support Elders before their care becomes critical and relieve some of the public housing need.

It’s also worth considering just how people will be able to get out their vote, especially when ballots still aren’t written in the territory’s language of majority, despite NDP MP Mumilaaq Qaqqaq’s recently tabled bill to that effect. Parliament was dis-

solved before the legislation could be passed.

Qaqqaq stated in June, “Reducing barriers must include respecting our languages.”

“I know that the federal government would say they’ve made advances in terms of the Indigenous Languages Act and I recognize how it talks about within Nunavut the federal government needs to provide services where there is capacity,” said Aluki Kotierk, president of Nunavut Tunngavik Incorporated. She added, though, it shouldn’t be reliant on capacity, it should be reliant on need.

“There certainly is a need within Nunavut when the public majority language is Inuktut.”

Elections Canada strives to hire workers from within their own communities who speak Inuktitut or Innuinaqtun, and interpretation services can also be arranged up to Sept. 14.

Voters can bring their own interpreter to the polls if they choose, but Kotierk is right in saying it shouldn’t be the responsibility of voters to find interpreters to help them.

No matter whose views you align with, the only way to ensure they’ll be heard is to use your right to vote, however you’re most comfortable. And then do it all again in a little more than a month when we return to the polls for the territorial election Oct. 25.

Guest Column As traditional people, we Inuit never belonged to any political parties, let alone were we able to vote at elections. We did not know anything about them. And we Indigenous People were only given a RIGHT to vote in 1960 in Canada by our Canadian government.

Prior to that time, we Inuit were not even considered “Canadians” by our Government.

In those days, we always used to say: “Kanatamiut” “Those who live in Canada.” Meaning all southern Canadians.

However, we became involved in politics in the 1960’s, only because we knew people who were in power, such as Jean Chretien, when he was Minister of Indian Affairs and Northern Development in 1968. We became involved with federal parties, not knowing much about them. We only knew them as Isumataaluit - “Big Bosses.” And then, from there, many of us became Liberals. Some joined Conservatives but not many became New Democrats at that time, as it was less known. When it came time for elections, we voted for the best person. Today, most of our

people are more educated and informed and have a better understanding of these parties, and they run for a party of their choice.

At 74 years old, I have seen a lot of changes from iglu to federal elections. I hope, this helps to make people understand a bit more of how we Inuit got here. Today, I don’t belong to any party. I am free to choose, and endorse who I believe will represent Inuit interests best in the Parliament of Canada. And Nunavut interests as well. I also look for someone who will represents Inuit culture.

These stories about moving from iglu to internet in less than 60 years, must be told, must be educated with, and informed with by Canadians. The Canadian government only discovered us Inuit 60 years ago! And they started sending us to residential schools and then to southern Canada for vocational training such as mechanics. The government used to have a saying: “Those Eskimos are good mechanics.” You know what, I agree with the government on that statement! Inuit are very good mechanics, we are very good with our hands. My son Ted is a very good mechanic and a good role model.

Kinngait’s new health centre celebrated by community

New 1,792 square meter facility built with future needs in mind

Kinngait’s new health centre opened its doors to patients on Aug. 3, and on Sept. 7 there was a special celebration where a number of Nunavut’s ministers and community members took part in the opening ceremonies of the new facility.

The new 1,792 square meter, $33-million building boasts dental, emergency, x-ray, prenatal and mental healthcare facilities, along with improved clinic space in comparison to the old health centre, which was built back in 1982.

It was built by the department of community and government services.

When it comes to providing healthcare services to Kinngarmiut, it is “much easier” in comparison to the old health centre, says Michael Blake, nurse-in-charge at the Kinngait Health Centre, while giving a tour of the new facility.

It was built with Inuit Qaujimajatuqangit, or traditional knowledge in mind, according to health centre staff, featuring large open spaces and plenty of windows.

Included among the expanded facilities are prenatal/obstetric emergency care, mental health, additional dental space, pharmaceutical and emergency services.

The expanded emergency services include a new ambulance service, a

welcome change to the community according to Kinngait resident Olayou Charlie.

New “calming rooms”, designed as a therapeutic space for clients who may feel overwhelmed or agitated are among the new mental health spaces for the residents of Kinngait.

“We have two beautiful (new) dental clinics, which is a whole lot better than the closet we had back at the elementary school,” said Blake.

There is room to grow in this new building, as it was “built for future needs”, according to Kinngait mayor Timoon Toonoo, who says, “it’s a lot more than we need right now. We will have good services for a long time.”

South Baffin MLA and education minister David Joanasie, whose home community is Kinngait, echoed the sentiment that Kinngait is a fast-growing community and needs the additional space.

“Looking at the community’s size, there’s a lot of growth happening …

I think the health centre’s size will be a great complement to support that,” he said.

The opening ceremonies took place at Kinngait’s community hall, where

there was a ceremonial qulliq lighting and speeches by the mayor and visiting ministers.

“I am proud of the role the Department of Community Government Services has had in the planning, design and construction of this outstanding health care facility. This is much needed critical infrastructure in the community,” said Jeannie Ehaloak, minister of community and government services.

Following a ceremonial ribbon cutting at the health centre, a community lunch was held back at the hall.

“This new facility demonstrates our government’s commitment to delivering high quality health services to Nunavummiut across the territory,” said health minister Lorne Kusugak.

Free Labour Day barbeque held at Elders Qammaq

Iqaluit On Sept. 6, in celebration of Labour Day, Public Service Alliance of Canada Nunavut, the Northern Territories Federation of Labour and the Nunavut Employees Union hosted its annual Labour Day barbeque, in support of union workers.

Free coffee, hot dogs, hamburgers and juice boxes were given out and there was face painting for children.

Labour Day in Canada has been a public statutory holiday for the first Monday of September since 1894, following legislation introduced by then prime minister John Thompson.

Pinnguaq gets ready to return to in-person learning

Nunavut The Pinnguaq Association has announced digital workshops for adults to take place in September, which will be taking place in various communities.

“Over the past 18 months, Pinnguaq has been fortunate to be able to deliver virtual programming that has been embraced by adult learners,” said Robynn Pavia of Pinnguaq. “However, both our staff and the communities we work with, are eager to return to safe, in-person learning, where we can connect with each other, learn together, and ensure we can listen well to the needs of our participants.”

It will consist of four-day workshops which will focus on supporting adult learners to improve their skill and comfort with technology, whether for work, fun, or connections with friends and family.

The workshops will take place in the following

communities: Whale Cove: Sept. 13 to 17, 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Grise Fiord: Sept. 14 to 18, 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Pangnirtung: Sept. 14 to 18, 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Resolute Bay: Sept. 21 to 24, 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Coral Harbour: Sept. 21 to 25, 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Veterinary clinic coming up

Rankin Inlet The Rankin Inlet Fire Department will be hosting a vet clinic at the new arena in Rankin Inlet from Sept. 27 to Oct. 3.

The clinic will be run by veterinarians from the Grant Park Animal Hospital in Winnipeg.

They will be offering services including checkups, vaccinations and deworming.

The will also be able to spay, neuter and do minor surgical procedures.

There is a small number of subsidized spay/ neuters available for pet owners with a limited income.

Appointments are required and so are masks for those attending the clinic.

Pauktuutit launches new resources for Inuit on World Sexual Health Day

Nunavut Pauktuutit Inuit Women of Canada on Sept.

7 launched two new resourced related to Inuit-specific sexual health and wellness strategies aimed at healthcare providers, policy makers and researchers, to help mark World Sexual Health Day (Sept. 4).

“For close to 40 years, Pauktuutit has led the

way in advocating for and producing Inuit-specific resources related to sexual health,” said Pauktuutit president Rebecca Kudloo. These resources “promote a holistic, life-long approach to sexual health.”

Created under the direction of the National Inuit Sexual Health Network, the first is an updated and expanded Ikajurniq: A Cascade of Care Framework for Sexually Transmitted and Blood Borne Infections (STBBIs), and Uuktuutiit: Inuit Sexual Health Indicators.

Ikajurniq, first published in 2018, is conceptualized as a tool to inform Inuit of the various steps involved in sexual heath education, testing, diagnosis and treatment, as well as a cultural and regional guide to inform Inuit and healthcare providers.

Uuktuutiit, informed by Ikajurniq and the 2017 Tavva, touches on the efforts described in Ikajurniq and goes further into other aspects which affect sexual health, such as reducing sexual violence, gender and sexual diversity and mental health.

Traditional names map prjoect seeks photos

Arviat Inuit Heritage Trust is looking for photographs to use on a large map with traditional place names of the land surrounding Arviat.

The trust is interested in images of people, wildlife or the land to decorate the back of the map.

All photographers whose images are selected will be credited but will not be paid.

Once completed, the maps will be given out for free to all Arviat households.

Anyone is interested in contributing their photos to the project should contact the Inuit Heritage Trust.

FASD and suicide awareness walk takes place

Ikaluktutiak/Cambridge Bay In partnership and solidarity with the community, the Kitikmeot Friendship Society, Embrace Life Council and the Huqqullaaqatigiit Drum Dancers organized an FASD (Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder)/Suicide Awareness Walk on Sept. 9.

The walk was to remember and commemorate the people whose lives were taken or impacted by suicide or alcohol abuse.

The walk started and finished at the community hall, where there was a country food giveaway.

Iqaluit RCMP gives tips for preventing theft from vehicles

Iqaluit The Iqaluit RCMP noted Sept. 7 an increase the theft of and from vehicles in Nunavut’s capital.

Police are asking assistance from the public in reducing opportunities for thieves.

The tips made from the RCMP include: • Locking your vehicles all the time, even if parked at home; • Never leaving your vehicle unattended if it is running or the keys are in it; • Remove valuable items such as wallets, purses, phones, money and hand sanitizers from your vehicle.

A public service announcement by the RCMP also noted personal safety and health take priority over belongings, and to not put yourself across someone committing a crime, if you see someone committing a property crime at your home, call the police.

Time to celebrate in Cambridge Bay, Nunavut! No matter how the rainy season is.

Weather has been different this past summer, a very short summer, with lots of winds, rain, and lots of potholes on the roads. With so much wind this past short summer, there were not many days of mosquitoes, which was one good thing. All the rain left the roads with lots of potholes which made it difficult for residents to drive their vehicles and ATV’s.

Boating season was busy for those traveling to their homeland, camps and to enjoy the beautiful peaceful time out on the land. Most of the campers are back home as the school students are back in school. This past summer Anaana’s Camp did not operate due to the pandemic. For the safety of wellness of our Dear Elders.

Quana for fresh maktaaq Felix and Peter Norman! Two young whale hunters harpooned a beluga whale in the Bay in Cambridge Bay, Nunavut. Usually whales do not come around near Cambridge Bay, but on Friday, Sept. 3,

2021 two young hunters were able to share their harvest with many residents who were so happy to be able to have fresh maktaaq. While many residents came out with their boats, a navy ship happened to be anchored in the Bay during the long weekend. The navy crew must have wondered what the heck was going on, but began assisting with the whale hunt by going on their loudspeaker/pa system directing the hunters where they spotted the whales from the ship. It was so cool for the navy to assist in the whale hunt. Quana Felix and Babe for making the community happy and everyone was so excited to see young whalers having a time of their lifetime, something they will never forget. A time to celebrate and share, that is what Inuit do. So proud of My Grandson Felix! School-time now.

Also one more beluga whale was also harvested by Roland Emingak and Dennis Kaomayok. Congratulations to all. Made our community happy.

Another reason to celebrate in our community is because the annual sealift barges have arrived and it is like Christmas in September.

The annual sealift barge has finally arrived into the community delivering goods such as food and supplies for the stores, residents and businesses, with heavy equipment, vehicles, building supplies and much more.

Rankin Inlet installs solar panels on arena System will make community largest independent power producer in Nunavut

Rankin Inlet will soon become the largest independent power producer in Nunavut thanks to the installation of solar panels on the community’s new arena.

The hamlet planned to develop the system as part of Qulliq Energy Corporation’s new Commercial and Institutional Power Producer program (CIPP), which is designed to allow existing commercial and institutional customers to generate electricity using renewable energy systems and sell it to the corporation.

“Rankin can now pride itself to not only be the first to take part in the CIPP but also the largest solar system in Nunavut,” said Klaus Dohring the president of Green Sun Rising Inc., which installed the panels.

Once up and running the system will be capable of generating a total of 110 kilowatts. Kugluktuk, which has plans to build a 500 kilowatt system is currently the largest producer with 60 kilowatts worth of solar panels on their arena.

“Rankin has dethroned them with this new system,” said Dohring.

The new system has been in the works ever since a meeting between Flynn, the president of QEC and Dohring at the Kivalliq Energy Trade Show in 2019.

It was supposed to be installed last summer but COVID19 led to delays in materials being shipped up.

According to Rankin Inlet SAO Darren Flynn, the electricity generated by the panels will be sold to QEC. “All the electricity entering the building goes into an inverter then goes up to a 600 volt transformer that allows you to plug into the power grid,” Flynn said.

Crown-Indigenous Relations and Northern Affairs Canada covered the majority of the more than $500,000 price tag for the solar panels through a grant, with the hamlet picking up a small fraction of the remaining costs, according to Flynn.

Flynn said the power bill for the new arena is approximately $400,000 per year. The hamlet estimates it will be able to sell $40,000 worth of power to QEC, annually.

In order to save energy the system is designed to put itself to sleep when it is working at less than 10-per-cent capacity.

Flynn said the average between the 24 hour sunlight summer months and the dark winters will even out over the course of the year.

“In the winter we’ll probably have six weeks where it’s dormant,” said Flynn. “In the summer months … should be pretty close to 100 per cent.”

The community is still waiting on an electrical inspection from QEC before the system can go live. It is expected that should happen within the next few weeks.

Forum unites Inuit women looking to make a difference Participants call week-long leadership workshop a ‘success’

Women from across Nunavut, who want to build a better future for themselves and the territory, are hailing the Arnait Tulliningit Inuit women’s leadership forum as a success.

The name Arnait Tulliningit refers to a women’s trail in a traditional camp, which mirrors the journey of women attending the forum.

“It was very exciting to have Inuit get together to try and plan a better future,” said Taloyoak invitee Elizabeth Lyall.

Lyall was one of several dozen people who took part in the women’s forum Aug. 23 to 26.

She grew up in Rankin but now lives in Taloyoak where she is the Aboriginal Head Start coordinator, an Iliatisniq Council board member (as well as one of its founders), as well as being involved in a women’s group. Lyall said her hamlet encouraged her to attend the forum because she is involved with so many different local organizations.

“I try to be active in what matters to me, which is helping other people better themselves,” Lyall said.

The program was originally supposed to be hosted in Rankin Inlet but bad weather meant the course ended up being divided between the Kivalliq and Iqaluit.

Throughout the week the women, who were linked between Rankin and Iqaluit via Zoom, were led through a series of workshops meant to empower and support them.

Among the topics covered were how to enhance women’s leadership at a community level, how to build capacity for new programs and seeking resources to provide such programs.

A group of Elders was also supposed to make presentations, however due to difficulties with communicating via screen, they could not.

Lyall said one of her main focuses is trying to build up women’s self-esteem.

“You have to feel good about yourself to help others,” she said.

“I know we’re good at everything in our sewing and our art, so we want to encourage each other. We can do anything when we don’t feel alone.”

Kugluktuk’s Keisha Westwood echoed the sentiment that it can be hard for women to make positive changes in their communities because they are put down or ignored by men.

“I see young women and older women belittling themselves for men but I’ve also seen the same women pack up and go hunting all by themselves. I want to help them find their voice and empower them,” Although Westwood is not sure what kind of program she wants to start she said being on the land has helped her with her own

healing process. She added that being at the conference made her feel less alone in her mission.

“I personally suffer from anxiety and being able to hear that it’s not only me wanting to make a change in the mental health system that really stuck out to me,” she said.

Tamar Mukyunik from Arviat has run a taxi business for three years and is hoping to open a photo studio in her hometown in the near future. She also helped start up a women’s group in Arviat earlier this spring.

Taking part in the leadership forum made her realize how important it is to develop more programs to teach Inuit language and culture.

“We need to strengthen it, practice it, promote it, use it, speak it write it, keyboard it. Make it a priority.” she said.

She added that one of the biggest gaps in programming for Nunavummiut in need was for orphaned children.

“Everybody is into the rich and the famous and the well-educated and supporting all those people but I want to speak for the orphans. These ones are left all by themselves,” she said. “I want organizations to support them, to comfort and to feed them.”

Fuel spill cleanup underway New Covid-19 after truck rolls on road to case detected Meadowbank mine in Rankin Inlet Investigation underway to identify the cause

Emergency spill measures are being implemented by Agnico Eagle Mines after a tractor-trailer owned and operated by Arctic Fuel, rolled onto its side along the All-Weather Access Road (AWAR) from Baker Lake on Sept. 8.

According to a statement provided

by Agnico Eagle Mines the incident occurred approximately 5 kilometres south of the Meadowbank Complex.

The truck was carrying two sea containers resulting in a spill of coolant fluid, along with an oil spill and a fuel spill.

At this time no product has entered any freshwater system and exact quantities of materials lost is being assessed. Remediation actions are ongoing, according the statement.

The driver and the passenger, both from Baker Lake, are being treated at the Meadowbank Complex clinic for minor injuries and their families

have been notified.

The incident did not impact mining operations but traffic is reduced on the AWAR. Agnico Eagle has notified the appropriate Federal and Territory au-

thorities as well as the Kivalliq Inuit Association of the incident.

An investigation to identify the cause of the incident is underway and further updates will be provided as more information becomes available.

A new case of Covid-19 has been confirmed in Rankin Inlet. According to a news release from the territorial government, the individual arrived in the community on Sept.

7 from southern Canada and was working in Nunavut with a vaccine exemption.

“The new case was identified on Sept. 8 in Rankin Inlet and is now isolating,” said Dr. Rosann Seviour, Nunavut’s acting chief public health officer.

Contact tracing is complete and the risk to the community is considered low at this time. The Department of Health is also advising of possible exposure to COVID-19 relating to this new positive case on Canadian North flight 300 departing from Winnipeg on Sept. 7 at 9:35 a.m. and arriving in Rankin Inlet at 11:30 a.m. and Calm Air Flight 232 departing from Rankin Inlet to Naujaat at noon on Sept. 7.

The flight did not land in Naujaat due to weather and returned to Rankin Inlet.

Unvaccinated and partially vaccinated individuals who were seated in rows 3 to 9 on Canadian North Flight 300 or the last four rows of Calm Air Flight 232 should call the hotline at 1-888-975-8601 between 10 a.m. and 6 p.m. EST to arrange for testing.

Vaccinated individuals may call for testing 72 hours after the flight.

Everyone on the flight should monitor for symptoms for 14 days and anyone who develops symptoms must isolate immediately and call the hotline for testing.

Anyone who has symptoms of COVID-19 is advised to call the COVID-hotline to arrange testing or notify their community health centre right away.

There will be no other changes to public health measures at this time.

As the individual is not a Nunavut resident, the case will not be counted in Nunavut.

According to supervisor Rachel Tagoona-Tapatai, this year nearly 100 youth registered for camp. They were led by eight staff who split the kids into four groups of 23 kids with two staff to monitor each one.

“I think this year’s camp was quite successful. The kids looked forward to coming

to camp daily,” said Tagoona-Tapatai.

Tagoona-Tapatai said running the camp was made harder than usual due to the strict COVID-19 guidelines that were put in place. The windy and rainy summer also made outdoor activities more of a challenge but the counsellors and participants persevered.

“Some days it definitely was a challenge but we pushed through and we did indeed have a successful summer camp” she said.

Youth-led day camp wraps up in Baker Lake

Baker Lake’s Get Happy Summer Day Camp wrapped Aug. 13. The aim of the program, which was started by the Recreation and Parks Association of Nunavut 2015, is to have you between the ages of 15 and 21 plus lead at least four weeks of day camps for children aged 5 to 12 years-old.

Remember the Monday Night Wars?

If you were around in the 1990s, you will remember the Monday Night Wars. It was professional wrestling’s version of a ratings battle featuring the World Wrestling Federation (now WWE) and World Championship Wrestling hosting competing shows on Monday nights and giving high school boys with plenty of testosterone – such as I – a reason to turn on the T.V. each week.

Both sides did what they could to try and put the other out of business with WWE coming out on top in 2001 as Vince McMahon eventually buying what was left of WCW for pennies on the dollar. Fast-forward 20 or so years and we have the makings of the next great battle and this time, it looks like it could be here to stay.

All Elite Wrestling (AEW) is the latest company to take a swing at the McMahon empire and it has not only thrown down the gauntlet, it’s picked it up, slapped McMahon in the face with it, thrown it down again and continues to slap McMahon in the kisser.

AEW has the financial backing of billionaire Shahid Khan, whose son, Tony Khan, runs the operation with several wrestlers

And what’s been WWE’s answer to this?

Bring back Brock Lesnar, Goldberg and John Cena. Yawn. Three guys who have had their day in the sun and aren’t exactly the stuff I would tune in to watch. It’s come to the point that I can’t even watch WWE programming anymore because it’s so stale and predictable.

They could bring back The Undertaker and I wouldn’t even watch. But here’s something to chew on: do you think The Undertaker would ever do an AEW show? Guaranteed McMahon would kick in his T.V. if that ever happened.

The legendary Mick Foley even said himself in a recent video blog that young talents shouldn’t consider WWE right now as a career option because the creative department will most likely screw things up. The sad part is he’s right. There’s now a very viable second option on the table and it’s one where a young talent will probably have a better shot at some decent storylines, decent training and a place to grow among guys whose egos don’t dominate backstage.

WWE is slowly becoming WCW circa 1998 and if it keeps going the way it is, we’ll be watching AEW buy what’s left of WWE.
