Outgoing National Inuit Youth Council (NIYC) president Crystal Martin-Lapenskie has had a number of issues on her mind after an “eventful” two years in the position, but the top one is youth mental health and well-being.

NIYC represents the interests of Inuit youth in Canada, under Inuit Tapiriit Kanatami (ITK). They participate in a number of committees, sub-committees and working groups on various issues, generally helping in policy advancement and advocacy.

A part of helping inform this is the National Inuit Youth Summit, where the main focus and priorities of the youth council are decided each year.

“For the last two years we had to postpone it because of COVID, so we are looking at a virtual summit, we’re hoping to have a virtual summit for Inuit youth to come together to identify those priorities,” said Martin-Lapenskie.

That’s not going to deter the NIYC any longer as they are going online this time.

Some of Martin-Lapenskie’s main focuses these past two

years have been youth mental health, community infrastructure and climate change.

“Housing is a huge issue, there’s also issues with, for example, brick-and-mortar type of buildings for Inuit youth to either rent (or own) spaces if they want to become entrepreneurs. There’s a lot of things that are lacking.”

The most pressing issue from her perspective however, is the mental health and well-being of Inuit youth.

“It’s mental health, especially right now. Mental health is such a huge component, ensuring their voices are probably represented at these tables.”

“The concerns Inuit have with regards to high suicide rates, or what has helped mental health, for example like on-the-land programs, when COVID first occurred there was on-the-land programs so that families can go out onthe-land and self-isolate for two weeks.”

She adds that the program really helped drop suicide rates and alleviate mental illness.

One of the main things Martin-Lapenskie advocated for during her term was ongoing funding for the on-the-land initiatives.

“Inuit youth and families

are out together, they’re out on the land and they’re sharing knowledge, sharing practices, they’re hunting, fishing.

Practicing our traditions have a huge healing impact as well,” she said.

Following Inuit traditional knowledge, or Inuit Qaujimajatuqangit (IQ), like going out on the land, is helping people during stressing times.

“Colonization has been so recent for us, we’re looking (as recent) as 50, 60 years ago, but then if you’re looking at the closure of residential schools, that was in the ‘90s, and the forced sterilization ... was in the 2000s,” she adds.

“With all of the historical events that have happened to our people, traditional knowledge has almost been silenced.”

Martin-Lapenskie says this is the first generation that is essentially seeing the greater impacts of the loss of culture due to the effects of colonization.

As Inuit move past the times of residential schools and the generational trauma which followed, there are increasing opportunities to heal from that, she says, and today’s youth are a part of this.

“This generation has been essentially opening these doors

up again and reawakening our practices and asking questions. (They) are really hungry to learn, better understand proper ways to sew, traditional songs, drum dancing ... All of these play a huge role in our healing process. Culture really provides you with a sense of belonging, a sense of identity.”

The impacts of COVID19 within Inuit communities has also exposed a number of problems on a wider scale that have impacted Inuit youth.

“The pandemic has shown the general Canadian population how badly we need infrastructure, how badly Inuit need homes, proper health care, access to food, food sovereignty,” said Martin-Lapenskie.

“Inuit have been bringing forth these concerns for a number of years now and finally since COVID happened I think there’s been a realization that, yeah, we need to do something, this is a serious problem.”

The NIYC president is a twoyear term position, the incumbent acts as a representative of Inuit youth across Inuit Nunangat, sitting on the ITK and Inuit Circumpolar Council Board of Directors.

The next elections will be held June 18, nominations closed May 25.

Nunavut RCMP is seeking feedback from the public on the body camera pilot project that has taken place in Iqaluit over the past several months.

As the project moves to the evaluation phase, Mounties in the capital city will no longer wear body cameras as of June 1.

to share the results of the body camera pilot project publicly.

The recording devices are used during mental health calls, when people are in crises, when crimes are in progress, for investigations and to maintain public order.

Bystanders who are filmed will have their faces and licence plates blurred and their voices will be distorted to protect their privacy, so long as they were not directly involved in the incident.

Clearing runways and a path for the future with ‘determination’ Christalyn Kaiyogana is Kugluktuk’s first female airport maintainer

Christalyn Kaiyogana is Kugluktuk’s first female airport maintainer and, like her grandfather Richard Kaiyogana, she’s a heavy equipment operator.

The two of them occasionally “talk shop.” From the 1970s until semi-retirement in 2019, Richard worked on winter roads, the diamond mines, gold mines and oil rigs.

“He’s proud of me,” she said of her grandfather. “He’ll give me advice about some stuff to improve my skills. That helps

a lot too.”

Kaiyogana said she doesn’t know of any other certified female airport maintainers in Nunavut.

“When I heard, I couldn’t believe it,” she said of the gender imbalance.

Among her duties is driving the length of the runway at the beginning of her 8 a.m. shift and again before the end of the day at 5 p.m. She does a patrol before and after each flight to ensure the gravel surface remains in good shape.

If the conditions are slippery, Kaiyogana will climb into a grader and run the large blade over the airstrip to create

some friction. When a large snowfall occurs, she gets in the plow truck and clears the area.

She also checks to ensure that runway lights aren’t burnt out and watches for nearby wildlife that could endanger a landing plane. Sometimes she has to send birds flying away with a few honks of the pickup truck’s horn.

If something urgent arises that she can’t take care of herself, she issues an electronic notification to Nunavut Airports and the community aerodrome radio station (CARS) observer/ communicator, who is in contact with the pilots.

Kaiyogana attained a heavy equipment operator certificate in Kugluktuk in early 2020, and she also has a class three driver’s licence with an air brakes endorsement.

She initially started out as a quarry labourer last July. She moved over to operating heavy equipment with the municipality.

“There’s a lot of challenges relating to the working conditions, like weather and road conditions, but with determination, I work through those challenges. Whenever I complete a task, I ask myself how can I do it better next time to improve my skills,” she said,

adding that she’s constantly mindful of vehicle speed and keeps an eye out for pedestrians and motor traffic.

She also performs routine checks of the heavy equipment before operating the vehicles, such as the oil level, tire pressure and makes sure that hoses are connected.

Kaiyogana started as a relief airport maintainer in May, after finalizing that certification. In the past, she’s also filled a role as a mill operator at the Hope Bay gold mine and did some construction-related work as a housing maintainer.

“I like being out in the field.

I can’t see myself sitting in an office all day,” she said. “Everywhere I’ve worked, it wasn’t hard for me to get along with everybody.”

Although she’s been in several male-dominated occupations, she said she hasn’t encountered barriers due to her gender.

“Everyone’s been supportive and encouraging,” she said.

“The crew over at the hamlet are awesome.”

She added that her heavy equipment instructor and friends and family have also boosted her confidence.

“I can’t thank them enough,” she said.

Nunavut Sivuniksavut’s first online class celebrates weird, fun year with graduation Despite challenges with online learning, the 2020-21 class pulled through

On May 20, Nunavut Sivuniksavut (NS) celebrated the graduating class of 20202021, with a virtual graduation broadcast on Isuma TV and Facebook live on NS’s page.

It was here the various graduates came together to celebrate NS’s first year with online learning.

For many of the students at the virtual graduation, this was a school year they saw themselves gain a greater understanding of their own Inuit culture and of the history of Inuit and Nunavut.

“It has been crazy learning about Inuit history and Inuit government relations and my rights underneath the Nunavut Agreement,” said Aakulujuk Stephens, an NS graduate from Iqaluit.

“I believe this is all valuable information and it has been

amazing to learn all of this at home.”

The online classes “didn’t stop us from learning our Inuit identity, our land claims and our history,” added Ashton Mannik, an NS graduate from Baker Lake.

In some of the graduates’ communities COVID-19 made it’s presence known during the school year, however they were able to get their work done despite what was happening in their own communities.

“It’s kind of (a) weird and fun year because everyday we’d connect as a class through Zoom, but it was hard when Arviat was struck

by COVID and I had to be home with some complications with the internet,” said Damaris Nutarasungnik, an NS graduate from Arviat.

COVID-19 brought a different type of classroom than what is normally the case prior to the pandemic.

Despite that Nutarasungnik

managed to pull through, and it had even helped her persevere during the outbreak.

Having to juggle school and work, she said, was a good way to keep herself busy while learning about Inuit history and culture.

“I felt like I started living my owned identity as Inuk,” she said. “When I started studying at Nunavut Sivuniksavut, even though it was virtual learning, I learned a lot about Inuit culture.”

The students also took the time to thank their teachers and instructors for helping them through this unusual year.

“I’d like to take the time to thank our instructors, (for) educating us on what we learned throughout the year,” said Mannik.

“Something that’s inspired me this year, is all the support of classmates, teachers, family and friends,” said Liam Qammukaq, an NS graduate from Gjoa Haven.

For others it was something that completes their journey into better understanding

what it’s like to be Inuk.

“I always felt like I already understood, but it always felt like something was missing and NS brought that missing piece,” Mariah Erkloo,

a graduate from Pond Inlet.

“Not only it was a great chance to learn about history, I got to share the learning experience with amazing people.”

Graduation day for Nunavut Sivuniksavut students has been a poignant occasion for Morley Hanson for 31 years, but on May 20 it was particularly touching because it was his last as the Inuit post-secondary program’s executive director.

“I’m feeling all kinds of emotions, I guess.

It was such a special time,” Hanson said the next day.

He’s witnessed many a transformation over three decades, and even within each academic year as students grasp the weight and inequity of a colonialist history and how far their people have come in a fight for rights and recognition.

“For students to learn about their story and how there was a group of (Inuit) people who were determined to reverse the negative impacts of all of that colonial history … yes, it’s a story full of heartbreak and tragedy and shameful occurrence,” Hanson said, “but for students to see that that’s not the end of the story as it has been for so many Indigenous peoples around the world, I guess that was the biggest thing for me.

Realizing how important this story was to them and how meaningful it was … to see students stand up and say things like, ‘I’m no longer ashamed to say that I’m an Inuk,’ or ‘I’m so proud of who I am and where I come from.’”

Hanson started with Nunavut Sivuniksavut (NS) in 1988, the program’s fourth year of operation. He and his wife and two young children packed up and moved from northern Saskatchewan so he could build his career in Ottawa.

His initial knowledge of the plight of the Inuit was admittedly limited. He’d learned bits and pieces from watching televised Constitutional conferences in the early 1980s, what he’d seen of a 1960s National Film Board series and some informal reading.

“It was a brand new world to me,” he said.

But it was a pivotal time. Being only a few streets away from where the Tunngavik Fed-

eration of Nunavut (TFN) – the precursor to Nunavut Tunngavik Inc. – was negotiating the Nunavut Land Claim Agreement, Hanson and NS students would sometimes sit on the sidelines and listen to discussions in the TFN boardroom or have negotiators come to NS as guest speakers.

Hanson said he recalls being accepted by the Inuit he met and he rapidly developed an appreciation of how Inuit demonstrated a “persistence, solid perseverance and patience and determination … to seek a just relationship with Canada, and that was just so remarkable.”

He has also witnessed revolutionary changes within NS. The program became incorporated in 1999, forming a board of directors, with tremendous support from the late Jose Kusugak, former president of Nunavut Tunngavik, Inuit Tapiriit Kanatami and the Kivalliq Inuit Association.

Most of the board members today are former NS students, Hanson noted.

The curriculum became more refined – with significant input from students – and an affiliation was formed with Algonquin College, which brought greater academic accreditation.

Hanson, who earned the Order of Canada in 2013 for his work as an educator, has seen more than 500 students go through NS, with as few as 12 per year in the early days but as many as 42 in more recent times.

The number of staff also grew and more Inuit instructors were hired, including former students, and Hanson is hoping to see more graduates become NS educators.

His successor as executive director is Lynn Kilabuk, who’s from Pangnirtung.

“That feels very good,” he said of turning over the reins to a Nunavummiuq.

Moved to tears Another highlight that he cited was the student cultural performances, which became a popular feature at graduation ceremonies and at Ottawa events, such as Winterlude.

He recalled a memorable moment when a prominent Inuit-rights leader observed

one of the early student performances of traditional Inuit songs and dance in 1999.

“I looked over and I could see tears coming down his face because here he was seeing young people practising something which had for so long been repressed and not celebrated among youth,” said Hanson. “It brings them pride and confidence.”

There were also numerous student demonstrations against the international seal ban as they tried to educate others on Inuit culture and myriad trips to global destinations where the students acted as Inuit ambassadors.

Although the first year away from home is stressful for many students – and NS strives to provide psychological supports – the studies and interactions build knowledge, confidence, passion and inspiration, according to Hanson.

“That’s what allows them to want to be engaged in furthering and bettering the future of Nunavut and their communities,” he said. “They always get to the end of the year and say, ‘Gee, did that ever go by fast.

We don’t want it to end.’”

Pond Inlet’s Jena Merkosak, who was enrolled in NS from 2010-2012, thanked Hanson for his years of dedication and wished him well in retirement.

“I am both happy and saddened to hear he is leaving NS as he has always been there and made NS such a special program,” said Merkosak. “I remember I would look forward to attending his classes and listen to his speeches. His enthusiasm held such strength and wisdom that it was contagious and inspiring. He and the NS program helped me realize many things which created a foundation to stand firm in both my cultural identity and academia, which I believe other students can attest to.”

Hanson’s retirement plans include devoting time to various projects around his home, such as a finishing a kayak in his workshop, and more travel.

“I’ve got to figure out what my purpose now in life is,” he said. “It’s like starting a new phase of life, I’m going to have to figure it out.”

Emphasis on education has led to prestigious role with emerging company

It’s a long way from Cambridge Bay to running a copper exploration company that the stock market values at around $17 million.

But that’s what Nolan Peterson has done.

Peterson took the job as CEO of Vancouver-headquartered World Copper Ltd. on April 26.

Although his parents – Keith, a former territorial finance minister, and Sandra, a longtime GN director of finance – still reside in Cambridge Bay, his wife’s parents live in Vancouver, as does his brother, so they have family in the B.C. metropolis, too.

Nolan was already familiar with the city, having attended the University of British Columbia, where he earned a bachelor of applied science degree and a master of busi-

ness administration. He said his first year of university, in 2001, was challenging, but he had achieved good marks in high school and he applied himself.

He grew up in Cambridge Bay until age 17 and there was a great deal of emphasis placed on the value of education in his household, he recalled. He would have to do 60 math questions in a minute before going out to play at age five or six. There were bookcases lined

with books in the home, and trips to book stores whenever the family passed through Edmonton.

“My father said, ‘You can lose money, you can lose partnerships and relationships but nobody can ever take your education away from you,’” Nolan recounted. “He said, ‘It’s your passport to anything you want in life.’ My mother was the same way.”

He also warmly remembers days of ice fishing with his parents, climbing Uvayuq (formerly known as Mount Pelly) and visiting his uncle, who lived next door.

“It was a lot tighter with my family and friends because we just so close together in this small community, so those are the things that I look back fondly on,” he said.

He returned to Cambridge Bay for a visit in 2014 to show his wife and daughter the place where he and his brother were raised.

“You kind of see it through the lens of somebody’s who’s now spent a lot more time down south,” he said of his brief return to the Kitikmeot community. “You recognize the beauty in some of the simplicity of life up in the Arctic – nobody’s as rushed or hurried, everyone’s got time for other people, and (they’re) smiling and happy … I now appreciate more that type of lifestyle and why people would embrace that and enjoy it.”

The friendly people and the peaceful tranquility of tundra may lure him back someday, he said, but for now he remains focused on his career.

His company has an ambitious plan to begin producing copper there in three to four years.

“In mining it’s like tomorrow, very fast,” he said, adding that he anticipates strong demand for the red metal to be sustained due to its abundant use in electric vehicles, other renewable energy resources and housing.

Prior to starting with World Copper, Peterson spent three years as operations controller with TMAC Resources and the former company’s Kitikmeot Hope Bay gold project, although he worked from Toronto. Agnico Eagle has since bought out TMAC Resources.

While working with engineering firm SNC Lavalin in the mid-2000s, Peterson helped to establish the infrastructure construction plan for Newmont and was contracted by Miramar prior to that, when those companies owned Hope Bay. “I’ve had an extensive history with the project as well, from the early days,” he said of Hope Bay.

Three Inuit finalists in Indigenous Voices Awards Nominees among 27 published and unpublished emerging Indigenous writers

The Indigenous Voices Awards are once again celebrating emerging Indigenous writers and this year there are three Inuit finalists in the categories of poetry, unpublished prose and published works in Inuktitut.

Over the past three years the Indigenous Voices Awards have awarded more than $70,000 to Indigenous writers. For 2021 there are 27 short-listed emerging Indigenous writers across 9 categories with both published and unpublished works.

Zacharias Kunuk, who lives in his home community of Iglulik, is the finalist in published work in an Indigenous language with his story The Shaman’s Apprentice, illustrated

The Shaman’s Apprentice is a children’s story published by Inhabit Media, based on Kunuk’s short film of the same name and is written in Inuktitut, set in a time before colonization.

“This story happened long before the Europeans came, it’s a story of teaching new shamans to help the sick,” said Kunuk.

This is his first time being a finalist in this category and he hopes to “learn from it.”

“I love touching this area when Inuit lived as their forefathers before them,” he says. “When

shamans were around, when we had sky goddess, land goddess, and sea goddess.”

Back when there was a “Day heaven, middle heaven and the one below. This book goes to the one below.”

Norma Dunning, who wrote Eskimo Pie: A Poetics of Inuit Identity, is one of the finalists for published poetry in English. Dunning was born in Quebec, lives in Edmonton, Alberta and is of Inuk descent.

What Dunning hopes to explore in her collection of poetry is what it’s like being an Inuk who hasn’t quite grown up in a traditional Inuit environment.

“I also grew up in a house where we didn’t talk about it, we didn’t talk about being Inuit,” said Dunning, who spoke of Inuit relatives visiting, but there was never a discussion on what being an Inuk meant, “it was very quieted, very, very silent.”

At a point in her life, she started looking at her deeper identity as an Inuk.

“It sort of starts from that point of discovery, and the questions that I’m asked. The expectations of non-Inuit people, of what Inuit people are.”

As someone who doesn’t quite fit the mold of an Inuk she is often faced with those questions.

“This happens to me a lot, in the mainstream ideation of what Inuit people should be, and we’re always supposed to be in the

North. We’re always supposed to be next to that seal breathing hole. It’s like we can’t be everyday people.”

On being nominated for this year’s Indigenous Voices Awards, she is simply happy to be one of the finalists, and that Indigenous voices have a platform to be recognized, saying “I’m just pleased for it and I’m pleased that this award exists, because there’s just so many of us Indigenous writers.

“We don’t get the promotion, marketing or visibility that non-indigenous writers get and we write equally as good, if not better.”

She is currently working on her non-fiction book on the Inuit identification system, and hopes to publish another collection of short stories.

The third Inuit finalist in this year’s Indigenous Voices Awards is Deanna M. Jacobson, who is one of the finalists in the unpublished prose in English for her story Hockey and Hot Chocolate.

It is described as “A warm and uplifting look at family support structures,” by the jurors, and as a story that “deftly navigates the challenges and victories of youth” with strong character relationships.

Jacobson was unavailable as of press time.

This year $39,000 will be given out to award recipients on National Indigenous Peoples Day, June 21.

Building a greener future Green infrastructure projects across the territory are promising initiatives to build on Northern News Service

It was announced earlier in May that the Pitquhirnikkut Ilihautiniq/ Kitikmeot Heritage Society (PI/ KHS) is teaming up with the Southern Alberta Institute of Technology’s (SAIT) Green Building Technologies Lab on a prefabricated green building, to be shipped up to Cambridge Bay on this summer’s sealift and reassembled in the community.

While the final function of the building – which will be under 1000-square feet – hasn’t yet been decided, the goal is to create something scalable that can be used as a model for larger and more complex builds as time goes on.

Construction is hoped to begin in September this year. It will be completed with help from the SAIT team, who will also train local partners and community members during the build.

This is fantastic – a great example of capacity building and forward thinking.

Whether this building gets used as a living space, or a cultural hub, or it finds some other use, there will be real benefits to be reaped for future projects across the territory.

“We all know how the housing crisis has affected not only Nunavut but other areas as well – I think having innovative ways to model and learn more about how we can be climate conscious is very exciting,” Cambridge Bay Mayor Pamela Gross said.

Building in harmony with the environment, as the Nunamiutuqaq project proposes, is also an admirable goal, and something all provinces and territories could stand to learn from.

Being able to construct more cultural hubs and performance spaces in communities could be another perk from this project.

Qaggiavuut has been advocating for a cultural hub in Iqaluit for over a decade now, and for good reason.

Arts centres are a lifeline for communities, revitalizing them and providing a space to celebrate, protect and promote language and culture.

The central hub must be built first – the feasibility study completed in

February 2020 shows that the proposed Qaggiq Hub would support 408 full-time jobs and inject an estimated $41 million into Nunavut’s economy over its first five years.

“The new Qaggiq Hub will provide significant benefits in five key areas: society, health and well-being, education, innovation and economy,” a 2019 Qaggiavuut news release states.

“Cultural, community, government, and business stakeholders agree that investment in cultural facilities will make Iqaluit more livable and drive tourism and economic growth.”

Then-executive director Ellen Hamilton stated, “In other words, we are strengthening the Nunavut economy through the arts, as much as we are strengthening language and culture.”

This too, could be scaled to smaller communities, where full- and parttime jobs in the arts and culture sectors could be generated.

“Of course, there would be socio-economic benefits, as well,” said Hamilton. “It costs $350 a day to keep a man in prison. The performing arts are one of the ways you reduce risk. It’s also a very effective way of educating people, keeping them motivated.”

Building a green future together that makes it easier to promote healthy communities is a step closer with this Cambridge Bay project.

MP Qaqqaq won’t seek re-election Rookie New Democrat changed tune after second leave ordered by doctor

Nunavut MP Mumilaaq Qaqqaq announced May 20 that she won’t be seeking a second term in office.

“I’m incredibly thankful for this opportunity to be able to bring a voice to the House of

Commons that speaks truth and reality,” she wrote in the statement, which she shared on social media. “Even though I will not be running again, for the remainder of my term, I will continue to fight for Nunavummiut.”

Qaqqaq recently returned from two weeks sick leave as recommended by her doctor.

Her leave of absence came a few days after she issued an apology for claiming that Liberal Labrador MP Yvonne Jones is not Inuk on social media.

Earlier this year, Qaqqaq announced she would run in the next election after the Prime Minister suggested Canadians could be heading to the polls

as early as this fall.

However, she backtracked from those comments with her recent statement. An election date has yet to be set but the latest it can by held by legislation is Oct. 16, 2023.

Although she’s not seeking reelection, Qaqqaq said she will continue to fight for basic human rights of Nunavum-

miut. She said she hopes to continue working with leadership to ensure the expansion of the Mary River Mine respects all stakeholders and that COVID-19 assistance meets the needs of Nunavummiut.

She also plans to table legislation to have Indigenous languages included on federal ballots.

“In Nunavut, 64.5 per cent of individuals’ first language is Inuktitut or Inuinnaqtun. As a step toward reconciliation and to ensure democracy, Indigenous languages should be included on election ballots,” she wrote in her statement.

Qaqqaq, who was raised in Baker Lake, was elected in 2019 at the age of 25, capturing 40.8 per cent of the popular vote as the NDP candidate.

She has been open about her own mental health struggles since being elected to office. Last year, she took two months off work under the recommendation of her doctor due to extreme burnout, depression and anxiety.

That break came following a grueling housing tour of Nunavut, in which she documented the neglect and overcrowding that Nunavummiut face. Her report on Nunavut’s housing shortage was tabled in the House of Commons earlier this year.

“From raising awareness with my housing tour to raising issues in the House of Commons in question period, and in committees, I have

taken every chance I could to fight and speak out,” she said.

In her statement, she acknowledged all the constituents who have been kind and open to sharing their stories of resilience.

“From the first day of the campaign until today, I could not have done it without all the support and encouragement.

Together, we have been able to show the reality we face in the North – the rates of death by suicide, the low availability of housing, and the struggles people face every day just for their own basic human rights – to the rest of Canada,” said Qaqqaq.

She has been vocal in sharing her frustration over the federal government’s indifference to the pleas of Inuit, particularly over housing.

In her statement, she said that just because she has decided the House of Commons is not the place for her to continue her fight, she doesn’t want other young Inuit and Nunavummiut to be discouraged from trying to make a difference.

“As we know, federal institutions like the House of Commons, aren’t easily changed and governments don’t help Indigenous peoples without an immense amount of pressure,” she wrote. “Change is possible and our voices matter. You can do anything you set your mind to, and if you have room in your life to try to help others, please do so.”

Fun for all at the Frolics Northern News Services

Quana to all the volunteers who made the 2021 Omingmak Frolics a memorable one during pandemic. There were many events cancelled to keep social distance, but many outdoor events happened as well as virtual challenges by video. So many residents participated, both young and older.

About 100 or so went on the fishing derby and camped overnight, the whole weekend or week. Kids had the most fun with being allowed to enter certain events. Weather was so amazing, so now you see everyone tanned and brown.

We are so grateful and thankful for all the hard work the frolics committee and Omingmak Racing Committee and Ambrose Aknavigak Memorial Fishing derby committee did for their community in order for the festival to be successful. Quana to the community of Cambridge Bay for all your support and to the local businesses and organizations for your donations so many to list. It was a beautiful time to be outdoors and staying safe and healthy. Big quana to Zach Cziranka-Crooks and his gang.

Canadian astronaut Joshua Kutryk has been dreaming of going to the moon ever since he was in Grade 6.

On May 19, he joined Grade 11 and 12 students at Jonah Amitnaaq Secondary School in Baker Lake on a Zoom call to educate them about his long journey to realizing his dreams.

“As a kid I used to dream about going to the moon,” he told students. “It’s still one of the coolest things that technology has achieved.”

Kutryk was invited to speak to students as part of the Canadian Space Agency’s junior astronaut program.

The presentation was originally supposed to be an

in-person visit last spring but due to Covid-19 it had to be postponed until this year.

“He was an amazing speaker. How often do you get to talk to a real astronaut?” said career transitions teacher David Applebaum, who was one of two teachers present for virtual session. “It was a great opportunity and the kids really enjoyed it,” Baker Lake’s senior physics class enrolled in the program last year. As part of their application, senior students had to organize a series of fun challenges for the rest of the school over the course of the year.

“They were STEM (science, technology, engineering, math) activities – building a hovercraft was one, landing a space rover was another one. They also participate

in a virtual tour of the solar system on NASA’s website,” said substitute teacher Corey Casey, who sat in on the presentation.

The focus of Kutryk’s talk was his own journey to become an astronaut and his role in NASA’s next mission to the moon. He was actually rejected as a candidate to be an astronaut when he first applied in 2009. When the next opportunity arose in 2017, he was successful.

He told the students that his trajectory is an example of why it is important to be persistent.

Following a rigorous selection process, the Canadian Space Agency chose Kutryk to be a part of the Artemis program, which is NASA’s plan to return to the moon by 2023.

“That’ll be the first time any human beings will have returned to the moon since the Apollo missions,” he said.

Although he has been training at NASA headquarters for four years, Kutryk has yet to go to space.

“Life as an astronaut is more about the work you do on Earth than in space,” he said during his presentation.

Students were able to ask Kutryk questions. One asked about the logistics of going to the bathroom while in orbit.

Although he didn’t get into the details, Kutryk explained that most human waste becomes recycled.

“It’s kind of a funny question but it’s also a serious question,” he said. “It’s a very small component that ends up as pure waste. A lot of the urine is recycled. It’s processed until it’s water again.”

Student Olive Duval actually ended up stumping Kutryk when she asked him what Artemis stands for.

The astronaut knew that it was named after a Greek deity but did not know that Artemis was the Greek god of the moon.

Duval said she knew being an astronaut wasn’t easy but she was surprised to find out just how much work it takes.

She was also interested to find out that astronauts need to learn to speak Russian in order to go to space.

“I always knew that being an astronaut doesn’t mean just going to space. I knew about it but I didn’t know it took that much time to go space,” she said.

Even with all his training, Kutryk is still not guaranteed to be one of the select few to go the moon, as the selection process for that phase of the Artemis mission has yet to happen.

However, he said if he is chosen, he would make sure to remember Baker Lake while in orbit.

“If I get up to the space station in the next few years, I promise to try and take a picture of Baker Lake and send it to you.”

QIA providing $744,000 in food security supports

Kinngait The Qikiqtani Inuit Association (QIA) is supporting food security in Kinngait with $744,000 worth of funding from the federal government in the form of $250 grocery vouchers for Arctic Co-ops. Delivery of the vouchers began May 24.

QIA president P.J. Akeeagok stated “QIA is thankful for the federal government’s continued support for communities affected by COVID-19, and ACL’s (Arctic Co-ops Limited) ongoing excellence in delivering this programming alongside QIA for affected Qikiqtani Inuit.”

Beginning this week, May 31, QIA and Arctic Co-ops are providing food hampers in addition to another $250 voucher, as well as another hamper and voucher the week of June 28.

Inuit beneficiaries with multiple families in the same household are encouraged to apply to with their local QIA community liaison officer.

Youth leadership camp accepting applicants

Panniqtuuq/Pangnirtung Youth interested in becoming leaders in their communities are invited to apply to participate in online Zoom sessions with Pauktuutit Inuit Women of Canada.

The organization will be hosting Ikajuqatgiiniq (Helping One Another): Inuit Youth Violence Prevention Leadership Camp on July 19 to 22 from 9 a.m. to 1:15 p.m. EST each day.

The main goal of this camp is to improve the resiliency, leadership, and life skills of youth through enhanced self-awareness and self-reliance.

Those who complete all four days of the program will receive swag and a $100 gift card.

There are only 15 spots and registration must be completed

City reminds people to share public spaces

Iqaluit With the weather getting warmer and warmer, the City of Iqaluit would like to remind people to be courteous to others when sharing public spaces.

This includes following public health measures such as not gathering in groups with more than five people, wearing a mask when around people, keeping six-feet apart.

It also includes choosing another outdoor space if a spot is already taken, refraining from sharing equipment such as bicycles, helmets and balls with those outside of the household as well as carrying and using hand sanitizer after touching frequent touch spots like door handles.

“As you go outside to find peace, let others find theirs too.

Angulalik’s history with PI/KHS predates the Society, she is one of the founding members and has worked as a teacher, translator and ambassador for Inuinnait culture.

The Kivalliq witnessed its own real life version of Homeward Bound earlier this month when a dog travelled 70 km across the tundra to be reunited with its owners.

The Adams family was getting ready to leave Rankin Inlet for Whale Cove after hearing about a death in the family on May 2.

Flights were cancelled the next day, so they planned to head to Whale Cove by snowmobile the following morning.

While they were getting ready to go, the family noticed their 10-year-old German shepherd Pepper was frantic and eager to join them. That was out of character for the aging dog, who has bad hearing and spends most of her days sleeping. Her desire to travel was even more unusual given that Pepper hadn’t joined the Adams on the land ever since an incident about eight years ago gave her a scare.

“She doesn’t go anywhere anymore. Bylaw doesn’t even bother her,” mother Donna Adams, told Kivalliq News.

However, as the Adams were grieving the death of their family member, Donna said Pepper seemed to be especially energized and affectionate.

“We were in such shock and trauma and grieving she felt that, because she was determined to go with us. She even jumped on the sled,” said Adams. “I attribute it to her knowing that something was wrong and she knew we were traumatized and griev-

When the family finally took off, Pepper tried to chase the sled but she eventually returned home where the Adams’ youngest daughter was staying behind.

The next day, the daughter ended up getting on a rescheduled flight to join the rest of her family in Whale Cove, leaving Pepper all alone.

The day after the funeral, the father Willie Adams headed back to Rankin Inlet by snow machine with his eldest son because he had to go to work. When they got home, they were devastated to find that Pepper was gone. They searched around the community for a while but she was nowhere to be found.

Donna said there was already so much grief over the death of a family member that they eventually accepted that Pepper was gone for good.

“It wasn’t really a priority.

We just let it go. We were sad but we had so much going on,” she said.

A few days later, a hunter travelling between Whale Cove and Rankin Inlet told the Adams he thought he saw a German shepherd wandering on the tundra.

“We just figured she was a goner for sure. Like she took off and it’s wolf hunting season and there’s a lot of traffic between the communities this time of year,” Donna said.

With Willie back in Rankin Inlet, Donna stayed in Whale Cove with her youngest daughter and granddaughter to spend time with family for the week.

On May 10, Donna decided to take her granddaughter down to check out Whale Cove’s games in celebration of Hamlet Days.

As she drove down to the ice where events were taking place, she saw her youngest daughter running frantically

with her coat unzipped with her cellphone in hand.

When they met up, her daughter told her she thought Pepper was in town.

She said Molly Okalik, the community’s recreation coordinator, had texted a blurry picture of what appeared to be a German shepherd walking around.

They drove around town as fast as they could, yelling the dog’s name. Then, out of nowhere, a skinny version of their family pet emerged.

Once Pepper recognized her owners, she jumped into Donna’s arms.

“She nearly knocked the glasses off my face,” said Donna. “I don’t think in my life I’ve ever burst into tears instantly like that.”

Donna said Pepper looked 10 year younger because she lost so much weight and her eyes were swollen shut due to snow blindness.

That night Pepper didn’t eat and she didn’t even go out to pee because she was so tired. After everything the family had been through, they were ecstatic to be reunited with their beloved dog.

“By then we had completed the funeral and we were in lighter spirits and it brings some closure,” Donna said.

“We were just on cloud nine and beyond.”

Willie ended up getting a co-worker to bring a kennel from Rankin Inlet to Whale Cove the next day.

By Wednesday, Donna and her grandkids were all on a flight back home with their family dog.

Now that they are back in Rankin, Donna said Pepper is “back to her lazy old self.”

Although Pepper is not normally allowed to lie on the carpet, the Adams have now made an exception for their determined dog.

“We were all elated and proud of her more than anything,” Donna said. “We’re so relieved we didn’t lose her after all.”

Big prizes at Arviat and Coral Harbour derbies Hundreds of participants joined in on cod, pike and trout competitions Northern News Services

The annual spring fishing derbies in Arviat and Coral Harbour drew hundreds of participants over the May 15 weekend.

“It’s great family time,” said Ryan St. John, chair of Arviat’s trout and pike derby committee. “Other than weather being a little on the cool side, the sun was out.”

In Arviat, Tabitha Manik ended up taking home first place and $5,000 in the pike category with a fish measuring 40 1/16 inches. In the trout category, Dorean Arloo took home first place and $5,000 with a 36 1/8 inch fish.

derby, Sandy Jr. Sakiakjuk won a brand new Honda ATV and a $500 Calm Air gift card for coming in first place.

Bridget Pingwartok, the treasurer for Coral Harbour’s cod derby, said the committee had to arrange extra prizes because so many people registered.

“Luckily our cod derby committee saved a little bit more money,” she said.

Pingwartok said Coral Harbour’s derby also started off with bad weather but finished on a warm note.

“It was fun. Thursday and Friday we had a blowing snow weather, and kind of a whiteout. Other than that it was pretty good,” she said.

This was the sixth year that Arviat organized a big derby with cash prizes. For the second year in a row, Arviat’s hamlet stepped in to provide funding so that registration fees could be waved for the derby.

“They did that last year as well because we’re dealing with COVID-19,” said St. John.

Because registration wasn’t required this year, the committee isn’t sure how many people participated. But St. John said there were definitely hundreds of people out on the land over the weekend.

Lisa Otokiak turned in the biggest fish at the Ambrose Aknavigak Fishing Derby in Cambridge Bay over the Victoria Day long weekend and earned $7,500 in the process.

Otokiak’s 30.4-pound trout was the heaviest of the entries by five pounds.

In the Elders category, George Angohiatok earned $750 and first place for an 11.7-pound fish.

Among the children, Brooklyn Peterson took home $500 and top spot for her 8-pound catch.

The remainder of the results were as follows:

Nav Bhatia is now in the Basketball Hall of Fame … and it’s about time Northern News Services

Anyone who has ever watched a Toronto Raptors game will know Nav Bhatia. Even if you don’t know who Nav Bhatia is, you know of him because of his association with the Toronto Raptors.

ᕕᐅᓪ ᒪᐃᑯᓪᓯᓐ ᓵᓚᖃᓚᐅᖅᐳᖅ PGA ᓵᓚᖃᕋᓱᐊᕐᓂᐅᔪᒥ ᑕᖅᑭᐅᑉ ᐱᒋᐊᕐᓂᐸᓗᖓᓂ ᐅᑭᐅᖃᖅᖢᓂ 50–ᓂ, ᐃᓐᓇᐅᓛᖑᓪᓗᓂ ᐊᖑᑎᓄᑦ ᓵᓚᖃᕋᓱᐊᕐᔪᐊᕐᓂᐅᔪᓂ ᐱᓕᕆᓂᐅᔪᒥ. ᐃᓱᒪᒋᔭᐅᓪᓗᐊᖅᐳᖅ ᐊᔪᙱᓛᖑᖃᑕᐅᔪᓂ.

Phil Mickelson won the PGA Championship earlier this month at the age of 50, becoming the oldest winner of a men’s major championship in the process.

He deserves to be considered one of the greatest.

He’s the Superfan, a title bestowed upon him by Isaiah Thomas, former general manager of the Raptors, in 1998 and it’s a name that’s stuck. It’s because he has never missed a Raptors home game since day one at the SkyDome (not the Rogers Centre ... I still call it the Dome) in 1995, ever-present in the same courtside seat, always cheering, always doing his thing, no matter how bad or how good things are going.

(Full disclosure: I was a Raptors season-ticket holder from 1995 to 1997 and saw the great man do his thing every game ... it was also an easy date night in high school).

He’s now a member of the Basketball Hall of Fame after being inducted earlier this month as part of the Superfan wing.

His turban, replica jersey, replica championship ring – yes, he received one when the Raptors won it all in 2019 - all a part of history and none too soon, either. Bhatia is everything that makes humanity great: someone who literally started from the ground up, busted his ass, fought real racism and is now a success story while making sure no one gets left behind.

Bhatia has literally spent hundreds of thousands of dollars of his own money over the years to get kids in to watch a Raptors game and they come from every background: rich, poor, black, white, doesn’t matter. He purposely sits those kids together so they can talk and learn about each other. That’s how you do it. You don’t point fingers and point out what’s bad about people because that literally solves nothing.

You sit, you talk, you listen and you learn.

Plenty of adults - even here in the North can learn something from this.

We should all be a bit more like Nav Bhatia because Nav Bhatia is who we should want to be.

Score one for the old farts Phil Mickelson was never my favourite golfer. I always wished for him to lose every time I watched him play. I could never explain why. I just never liked him as a golfer.

But everyone loves to cheer for the old guy and I admit - I cheered a bit for Mickelson on his way to winning the PGA Championship on May 23. He became the oldest men’s golfer in history to win a major title, knocking the legendary Jack Nicklaus off his pedestal. Nicklaus, who’s now the second-oldest, was 45 when he won the Masters for the sixth time in 1985.

There’s something about seeing the old guys give it to the younger players, kind of like that master still showing the pupils they can still get the job done. Sure, the pupils may be the future and win more often but you never count the old guy out because they still know the tricks.

Now, the crowds were an issue and I will say that having that rush of fans onto the 18th was a bit of a surprise. Normally, security is pretty good at keeping fans behind the ropes but they got too excited.

Thankfully, no one did anything stupid and even Mickelson thought it was amazing to see. It was amazing to see because any gathering of the public right now is marvellous.

So is Mickelson one of the greatest ever?

Sure, why not? Some people have been debating it but six major championships, many other tour wins and second all-time in career earnings is a pretty decent resume.

Good Idea: Belittling the Houston Astros as cheaters.

Bad Idea: Hearing another team get called out for stealing signs.

As the world continues to kick the Houston Astros (Asterisks) in its collective scrotum for being cheaters in winning the 2017 World Series*, we hear of another team being called out for stealing signs.

Former Major League Baseball catcher Erik Kratz was on a talk show in New York recently and insinuated that a team which has been to the World Series “often” has been doing the same thing the Astros were caught doing: using cameras and trash cans to tip off batters about pitches.

Many people clued in that Kratz was referring to the Los Angeles Dodgers and it isn’t the first time the Dodgers have been fingered as potential cheats. An article by Robert Murray in The Athletic from 2018 featured the Milwaukee Brewers “concerned” that the Dodgers were using video to pick up signs.

What does this prove? Absolutely nothing because the Dodgers are innocent until proven guilty but there’s an obvious problem in Major League Baseball if the accusations keep on flying. Thanks, Houston.
