Black Press Media acquires NNSL, Canarctic Graphics ĪØflî

Deal, in works for months, closes March 31

After almost 40 years of independent publishing, Northern News Services Limited (NNSL Media)'s six newspapers will soon be under Black Press Media's ownership.

After months of negotiations, Black's purchase of NNSL and its printing subsidiary, Canarctic Graphics, will close April 1.

A B.C based publisher, Black operates more than 170 community newspapers and news sites across Canada, as well as Hawaii, Alaska and Washington State.

News of NNSL/Black Press negotiations surfaced last month though no agreement to purchase had yet been reached.

"I don't expect that there will be any

change whatsoever beyond what we've always done, which is report the news and express our opinions about what's going on locally," NNSL Media publisher and CEO Bruce Valpy said after addressing the companies' employees.

Owing to the public health limits brought on by the pandemic, Black purchased NNSL without a site visit, a new experience for the publisher.

Karen Sigvaldason is president of NNSL and Canarctic and the daughter of founder Jack "Sig" Sigvaldason, who passed in 2018.

"My father, Sig, believed passionately in the strong role of NNSL and Canarctic in serving the people of the North," she said.

"I am confident that Black Press Media will

continue that tradition."

Included in the deal are NNSL's two weekly Yellowknifer newspapers, Nunavut News, Kivalliq News, the Hay River Hub, Inuvik Drum, News/North and the NNSL.com and Nunavutnews.com websites.

Black Press Media president and CEO Rick O'Connor said the group has had a favourable experience with community papers in Canada's North following their 2013 purchase of Whitehorse based Yukon News.

"We look forward to supporting these newspapers, their associated digital operations and printing plant as we move forward out of the pandemic," O'Connor said. "These papers and digital platforms provide an extremely valuable service across the North."

Jack Sigvaldason launched the Yellowknifer newspaper in 1972 after being fired from News of the North, the now 75-year-old weekly paper servicing the territory. Starting the Yellowknifer from his kitchen, Sig later bought the paper that fired him in 1979 and acquired Canarctic Graphics 10 years later.

While Valpy emphasized that the editorial focus won't be changing with the new ownership, he said that NNSL would be able to offer a larger market to advertisers under Black Press's improved digital capabilities.

"It's a digital world out there. People love reading newspapers, but they also like going on their phones, tablets, and home computers," he said. "We'll be in all of those places, with more muscle."

Inuit and women, however, continue to earn less

The territorial government's workforce expanded by 132 positions in 2019-20 and the average salary reached $95,984, up by $384 from 2018-19.

The average annual salary for Nunavut Inuit, who continue to comprise half of the public service, was $86,478.

For non-Inuit it was $106,997.

Female employees, who comprise 65 per cent of the territorial government's staff, earned an average of $94,841 while male employees were paid $98,634 per year, on average.

"The differences between salaries can be attributed to employment categories, because Nunavut Inuit and

female employees hold fewer professional and management positions than their non-Inuit and male counterparts. The GN is making every effort to ensure this imbalance is addressed through various career development training programs targeted at Inuit employees," states the 2019-20 Public Service Annual Report, which was tabled in the legislative assembly earlier this week.

In total, salaries cost the GN $418.2 million.

Overtime added another $27.2 million.

However, 1,471 of the total 5,142 GN positions were vacant as of when the report was published.

The Qikiqtaaluk region hosted the most government jobs: 3,188.5. The Kivalliq came next at 1,189, while the

Kitikmeot region offered 739.5 GN positions.

At 2,112, Iqaluit remains the community with the most territorial government jobs.

Rankin Inlet was second at 526 positions.

The average length of service for public service employees was 8.6 years.

Two hundred casual employees moved to indeterminate status in 2019-20, with 101 of them being Inuit. Of 61 direct appointments, 60 were Inuit.

In 2019-20, the average time to fill a position was approximately 154 days, rising from 141 days the previous year.

The GN was named one of Canada's Top Employers for the third consecutive year, specific to young people and recent graduates.

CPHO cites concerns with misinformation; communities with low vaccine uptake may experience shame, stigma

The Government of Nunavut (GN) will not be releasing community-specific vaccination levels, citing a number of concerns, namely misinformation and stigma around the vaccine.

"The concern was raised (that) if we do that, then certain communities, that for whatever reason have a low-uptake, will get shamed or it'll contribute to misinformation and stigma," said Dr. Michael Patterson, Nunavut's chief public health officer, during a Covid-19 update on March 9 at the Nunavut Legislature.

"We can see that there's a lot of shame and stigma with the numbers around infection. That is unfortunate and we need to work on that, because that's counterproductive. It doesn't help and it definitely creates harm."

Patterson added there is "no public health rationale or reason to communicate that level of information."

Last week, Nunavut's Health Minister Lorne Kusugak spoke to the legislative assembly with regards to vaccine hesitancy and the stigma around it.

"I understand that there are people who will not be vaccinated because they don't want to be. We understand that there are people who cannot be vaccinated but who

wish they could be," said Kusugak.

"Our Department is doing the best we can to put out facts and as quickly as we can."

"There are people on the other side that are trying to misinform. I think it is a battle we won't win, but I think it's a battle that we will not give up lightly on."

Currently the GN's Covid-19 vaccine dose statistics reveals the amount of first doses, second doses and total vaccine doses administered territory-wide.

As of March 9, there were a total 14,943 vaccine doses administered, with 9,426 first doses and 5,517 second doses administered.

"There's 24,000 adults roughly and 9,400 people have received one dose, and of those 9,400, 5,000 have received their second dose," Patterson said.

The second dose numbers are being used to count the percentage of overall people vaccinated in Nunavut, which now sits at roughly 39 per cent.

Covid-related restrictions are being eased in Arviat and the success of the community's vaccination campaign was cited as one of the reasons for that change.

With the majority of highest-risk adults in Arviat protected from severe Covid disease by inoculation, "the impact of Covid19 on the health of Arviat is much different than it was in November, December," said

Patterson.

Starting on Monday, March 15, vaccinations will be open to everyone in Iqaluit 18 or over. The opening to make appointments starts on March 10.

Currently the Iqaluit vaccination campaign is going steady, with nearly 100 people per day receiving their first or second dose.

While the GN has been able to meet the logistical challenges associated with the vaccine rollout, there have been challenges with regards to other factors out of their control, namely that of the amount of Moderna Covid-19 vaccines they will be getting any given shipment.

"That's dependent on decisions that are happening at the company's level in Europe, that has created some challenges, but we think within the next week or two, we'll have our final shipment to meet that goal of having enough doses for 75 percent of adults by the end of March," Patterson said.

"Right now there's five or six communities that have not completed its first dose, there's two that are starting today (March 9)."

Patterson says his office is hopeful that by late April they will have finished the "majority if not all" the second dose clinics.

"We will continue to work to ensure that all Nunavummiut that want the vaccination will get one," said Kusugak.

On International Women's Day, March 8, the Law Society of Nunavut in partnership with Pauktuutit Inuit Women of Canada launched the Access to Justice Family Violence Prevention public awareness campaign at the Astro Theater in Iqaluit. The goal was to build a better understanding of the legal barriers facing Inuit women dealing with family violence and their needs.

Over four months, data was collected through 38 interviews from all over Nunavut with individual Inuit women, to help understand their lived experiences and to inform the development of this awareness campaign.

Social media, radio, video, print and digital advertising will be a part of this, as well as two podcasts being developed with the Government of Nunavut's dept. of Health, focusing on mental and sexual health.

Stephen Jackson, assistant deputy minister speaking on behalf of Nunavut's Health Minister Lorne Kusugak said, "this campaign is an important step towards the goal of addressing the harms family violence causes to all Nunavummiut."

The Department of Health has also joined the campaign's advisory committee which Law Society of Nunavut CEO Nalini Vaddapalli described as "core to this project." "(It reflects) the importance of addressing the abuse and family violence holistically, the committee represents a wide range of organizations, both government and nongovernment," said Vaddapalli.

The RCMP were also present to support the launch, with a number of female RCMP officers present including Amanda Jones,

"We the RCMP and I, their commanding officer, fully support Pauktuutit and the Law Society of Nunavut in this Access to Justice Campaign," said Jones.

John MacLean, president of the Law Society of Nunavut, also spoke, saying that everyone knows someone who has been affected by family violence.

"Each of us can identify someone in our lives who has been affected by family violence, maybe it's a member of our family, maybe it's someone we love, someone who's loved us, maybe it's a colleague who comes to work with a bruise they didn't have on Friday night, each one of us knows someone," MacLean said.

President of Pauktuutit, Rebecca Kudloo, also gave remarks, however she was unable to make it to the event from Baker Lake.

"The goals of this Family Violence Prevention Initiative and International Women's Day will be achieved when women and men work together to end domestic violence and gender inequality," said Joanna Awa, speaking on behalf of Kudloo.

"The collaborative approach to this project has given us a unique road map to explore ways to break the silence and work better together," said Vaddapalli.

'Many flaws' in GN's housing policies, MLA says ĪØflî

More generous staff housing subsidy disproportionately benefits highly-paid and non-Inuit employees, according to Arreak Lightstone

The Government of Nunavut's staff housing policy suffers from "systemic" issues that disadvantage lower-paid Inuit staff, said Iqaluit-Manirajak MLA Adam Arreak Lightstone.

"My analysis has identified that the Government of Nunavut's housing programs have many flaws," he said on March 4, the day he tabled his own report on the issue after asking numerous detailed questions of the government over the past couple of years.

He said the $1,500 monthly staff housing subsidy is only available to 1,600 government workers, who represent less than half of the GN workforce. As well, 70 per cent of staff housing units are allocated to the territorial government's highest-paid workers, such as senior managers and executives.

Inuit, who represent half of the GN's employees, are only one quarter of staff housing

occupants, Arreak Lightstone pointed out.

"I continue to address the issue in the hopes that cabinet will address the systemic flaws which will require a government-wide approach. I do have high hopes that the situation can and will be corrected," he said.

He also critiqued the Nunavut Housing Corporation for changing the way it reports income levels of public housing tenants.

He referred to past annual reports that showed tenants earning more than $100,000 per year grew to 350 in 2019 from 277 in 2017. But he couldn't determine the equivalent figure for 2020 due to an alteration in methodology.

Housing Minister Margaret Nakashuk replied, "If we look at the number of people that are tenants in public units, 4,911 and over are in threshold of $27,000 income to $80,000 to $100,000.

The numbers that he is requesting is very minimal when we look at the number of tenants in

these public housing.

"What the member is failing to understand is a lot of these tenants are in smaller communities and we lack housing. I don't think we should be asking people 'You have to move out because you have a high income.' We can't do that, especially in the communities that don't have housing," said Nakashuk.

Arreak Lightstone said his intent is not to encourage anyone to leave public housing, but he wants to continue to monitor the ratios under the previous reporting method. Nakashuk said she could provide that detail.

He also asked the minister to create an income chart for staff housing tenants.

"I just find it odd that the housing corporation provides annual income of one group of public housing tenants and not the income of the staff housing tenants," he said.

Nakashuk responded, "We know that many of the tenants pay a lot of money to rent and

not all of the houses are in very good condition. I like it when people try to get jobs even though it is going to raise their rent, so I thank them. People who pay rent to the government, that can be looked at. I don't know whether we will be presenting (the data) here or not.

I cannot commit to that right now."

Terry Audla, president of the Nunavut Housing Corporation, explained that the corporation obtains information from local housing organizations on whose name appears on leases for public housing units and helps assess tenants' income through the Canada Revenue Agency.

"We don't have that authority with staff," said Audla, who added that staff housing rents are based on the size of the units and the monthly amount owing is deducted from the GN's employee's pay.

The Nunavut Housing Corporation is currently undertaking a review of its public housing rent scale.

Anybody following the ongoing saga between Baffinland's Mary River iron mine and the Qikiqtani Inuit Association (QIA) has to be suffering from whiplash, as the Inuit organization has shifted its position on support for the mine's operations a few times over the past few years.

In 2018, QIA supported – and lobbied the federal government on behalf of Baffinland – a production increase in iron ore output to six million tonnes per year (Mt/a) from 4.2 Mt/a, despite the Nunavut Impact Review Board recommending against it. With support from the Hamlet of Pond Inlet and Mittimatalik HTO, federal approval for that increase came Sept. 30 of that year.

When the mine was applying for the increase to six Mt/a, it claimed employees' efficiency had allowed them to produce more than their allotted production at the time, but would have to lay off employees if the elevated rates were not allowed to continue. Land of snow and ice and the beautiful Inuinnait who sing and dance to the pihiit and qilaut of our ancestors. The weather this time of year brings snowstorms, winds and blizzards. It is when the seal pups are being born on the snow drifts on the ocean and sea. The sun is bringing more daylight after the few weeks of darkness, which is very welcoming.

When there are blizzards the community shuts down, no water and sewage trucks out, all offices, schools shut down, no airplanes, and when you wake up to no storms, everything is full of fresh snow everywhere. The heavy equipment operators have been busy clearing snow making way for vehicles to get around in our community. We see many rabbits also as Easter approaches, it reminds us that spring is soon to arrive.

Legislative Assembly briefs with Derek Neary

Will millions in student loan debt be forgiven, MLA asks The Department of Education is owed $7.3 million in repayments for student loan debt but the bulk of that – $5.6 million – falls into the "doubtful accounts" category.

Arviat North-Whale Cove MLA John Main asked in the legislative assembly on March 4 whether the Department of Education is prepared to write off those outstanding loans.

Ibrahim Suleiman, the department's director of financial operations, acknowledged that the overdue amounts represents a "significant balance.

"We're looking at different collection possibilities and how we can gather this money, but if those steps don't achieve success, then we will be approaching the Department of Finance to figure out what would be the best steps to move forward," said Suleiman.

Main wanted to know how many years the amounts owing date back, but Education Minister David Joanasie didn't have the information on hand. He could only say that "they go quite a ways back."

Main also asked whether any of this "confusion or mess" could be attributed to the "out-of-date" computer or database systems in use at the Financial Assistance for Nunavut Students office in Arviat.

"I wouldn't be able to answer that question as well," Joanasie said.

Netser questions the wisdom of full-day kindergarten; wants parents consulted first A move toward full-time kindergarten lost momentum when Covid struck, and now a decision on a pilot project isn't expected until fall or winter.

"The department fully supports the concept of full-day kindergarten. I believe that's the same across the House," Education Minister David Joanasie said in the legislative assembly on March 3. "With that, we're looking at options on how we can move forward with implementing a full-day kindergarten in Nunavut. If we are going forward, it would likely have to be phased in over a period of time, given our resources and the building capacity of our schools."

Aivilik MLA Patterk Netser expressed some reservations about the concept, however.

"Children at the kindergarten level, some are five years old, some are four, if I'm correct, and they do get tired and take naps during the day when they get tired. They're still at the growing stage. Should they be required to attend the full day? I'm a little bit concerned," Netser said. "I'm sure that they will have in-depth discussions with the parents to see if they would like their child to attend full-day or half-day. Have you canvassed the parents to see what they think about their kindergarten age child attending all day? Have you talked to the parents? If you haven't, I'm urging your department to canvass the parents of the children to see what they think."

Joanasie said the department will be open to input.

"I'll commit to providing an opportunity for the public. I don't think we can reach every single parent, but they'll have an opportunity to provide feedback," he said.

When asked which communities would most likely to be part of a pilot program, Joanasie replied it would be schools that have enough space available.

"I do appreciate that providing support and benefits is absolutely necessary to ensure that Nunavut residents are not left destitute. However, I am concerned that many of our youth find it so easy to access income assistance without trying to consider other options," she said.

Raise age of eligibility for income assistance soon, Towtongie urges

Hamlets across Nunavut will be eligible for grants of $15,000$75,000, depending on population, and hunters and trappers organizations and other non-profit organizations can receive up to $5,000 under a new extension of the territorial government's essential worker wage premium program.

Finance Minister George Hickes said the GN expects to pay out $800,000 in total through these grants, which he announced in the legislative assembly on March 9. The money should begin to flow in the coming weeks, he said.

"All grant recipients will be able to decide for themselves how and when to best use these funds in support of the essential work they do related to Covid," said Hickes.

Through the Nunavut Essential Workers Wage Premium, the territorial government has paid out more than $2.8 million to 1,848 employees working for 64 different employers across Nunavut since June, according to the finance minister. In addition, more than $250,000 has been allocated to help employers cover their own administrative costs.

"Thank you to all who continue to provide essential services," said Hickes.

Income assistance should be available to 19 year olds and not 18 year olds as soon as possible, Rankin Inlet North-Chesterfield Inlet MLA Cathy Towtongie said in the legislative assembly on March 8.

"I find it very disheartening to hear from our youth who should be using their final years of high school to get the best out of their education so that they can move on to productive career choices, saying instead that they can't wait until they turn 18 so that they can sign on for income assistance," said Towtongie.

Changing the age of eligibility to 19 was one of several income assistance reforms that the Department of Family Services proposed in 2016. Towtongie inquired about the status of that particular amendment in October 2019 and again earlier this week.

On Saturday March 6, the Pitquhirnikkut Ilihautiniq/Kitikmeot Heritage Society (PH/KHS) in celebration of their 25th anniversary launched a $250,000 goal fundraising campaign for Inuinnaqtun renewal.

"Today, on the day that the Kitikmeot Heritage Society was officially incorporated 25 years ago, we want to reconfirm our commitment to reawakening our language and culture," said Pamela Gross, executive director of PH/KHS. "The campaign will run the duration of our 25th year. We are all in for Inuinnaqtun. Support received through the campaign will help us reawaken the language of our souls and support healing through the revitalization of our culture."

Elders and staff of the PI/KHS reflected on what they have accomplished over the previous two-and-a-half decades.

"I am grateful to be witnessing this 25-year anniversary, celebrating our Inuit culture, history and heritage" said Jimmy Maniyogina, a Cambridge Bay Elder.

"The cultural centre is a place where people gather to learn the Inuit history, culture and language."

Gross said that while they were incor-

porated this month 25 years ago, the Society's work goes back further than that.

"We were running projects starting in the early 90s out of the old library. These early projects saw us interview Elders in the community to document their stories, experience, and Inuinnait traditions that we wanted to preserve for future generations."

Over the years they have grown, from just having a part-time librarian back in 1996. The PI/KHS today has a number of staff under its umbrella, including four Elders-in-Residence.

Emily Angulalik, board president at PI/KHS and one of the co-founders, was grateful to be present for the 25th anniversary.

"I am so honoured to be witnessing the 25th anniversary of the Pitquhirnikkut Ilitauhiniq/Qitirmiut Heritage Society, as one of the co-founders of the PI/ KHS, along with my late mother Ekvana Angulailik, Reverend Keith Todd and Kim Crockatt."

QIA rejects Baffinland's plans to expand Mary River Mine President of Inuit association says he's aware of risk to mine's economics, but worries more about environmental and cultural impacts for Inuit

"There's already existing impacts (from the mine) that I think were being disputed at the hearings in terms of the baseline data," says P.J. Akeeagok, president of the Qikiqtani Inuit Association.

and dust and the low rate of Inuit employment at the mine site are factors too serious to overlook.

"The fundamental questions that are still there, a lot of them weren't being answered right at the impact review board ... there's already existing impacts that I think were being disputed at the hearings in terms of the baseline data and the ... incorporation of Inuit qaujimajatuqangit (traditional knowledge)," Akeeagok said, adding that the proposal to double production to 12 million tonnes per year from six million tonnes at the mine exacerbated matters because the pace is too great.

The Hamlet of Pond Inlet has proposed that the expansion, if approved, be limited to an annual increase of 1.5 million tonnes of iron ore over four years.

Baffinland officials have warned that the economics of the mine may not remain viable without the expansion, which Akeeagok acknowledged.

"I think we're all aware of that potential risk. It's something I think we all take seriously," he said. "We want to see Inuit trained. We want to see Inuit employed. But there's also a balance that we must take in terms of the potential impacts to the livelihoods of Inuit, whether it be to the wildlife or way of life, whether it be tied to the culture. We have to always look at these proposals from a holistic viewpoint."

During the last round of regulatory public hearings in Pond Inlet in late January, Baffinland's Megan LordHoyle, vice-president of sustainable development, said the use of trucks to transport iron ore substantially raises the cost of operations. A proposed

110-kilometre railway to the port at Milne Inlet is expected to lower Baffinland's expenses over the years ahead.

"The company has already operated through a number of fluctuations (in iron ore prices), and, ultimately, we need to reduce the cost per tonne and we need to attract investment. Therefore, the current operation as is is not a viable one for the long-term," Lord Hoyle said.

'Considerable losses' Iron ore prices ranged from $40 to $180 per tonne between 2008 and 2020. Udlu Hanson, vice-president of community and strategic development for Baffinland, cited an analyst's report stating that the Mary River mine "experienced considerable losses" between 2016 and 2019. She also referred to the report's finding that the phase two expansion would make the project more financially stable and robust during periods when iron ore prices are low.

Baffinland wouldn't answer questions from Nunavut News following the QIA's March 5 announcement, but the company issued a news release on March 6 noting that the QIA is still open to receiving Baffinland's proposals to address concerns.

"We will continue our community outreach and seek to meet the QIA and others as soon as practicable to discuss their concerns in order to find a mutually agreeable way forward," said Brian Penney, CEO of Baffinland.

Akeeagok declined to speculate on whether the Nunavut Impact Review Board (NIRB) and the federal government would endorse Baffinland's expansion proposal without a green light

from the QIA. "I can't speak for whether it will be approved or not.

We're going to continue to work hard to put the evidence before NIRB and we'll work extremely hard to ensure that Inuit voices are respected all the way through," he said.

However, the QIA's influence was seemingly demonstrated in October 2018 when the federal government authorized a temporary increase in Baffinland's production to six million tonnes per year from 4.2 million tonnes. NIRB had advised the federal Department of Northern Affairs against the higher limit due to potential impacts on marine life and increased dust.

The QIA, having just renegotiated its Inuit Impact and Benefit Agreement with Baffinland at the time, wrote to the Northern Affairs minister and, with added support from the Hamlet of Pond Inlet and the Mittimatalik Hunter and Trappers Organization, the federal government overruled NIRB's recommendation.

Last June, the QIA signed another major deal with Baffinland known as the Inuit Certainty Agreement. It would provide numerous upfront benefits as well as milestone payments to the QIA as the mine expanded. Akeeagok said he has no regrets about negotiating that arrangement.

"As a DIO (designated Inuit organization) it's our duty and our job to ensure Inuit have the best available information to make an informed decision ... I think we all heard loud and clearly that's there's no consensus (from the affected communities)," he said, adding that he listened to some strong comments from individuals of various generations while vis-

iting Pond Inlet recently.

"There's very powerful statements that were said and those are what we've got to keep ourselves grounded in and to continue to keep doing better. That's something that we really want to continue to push is to ensure that the

Inuit voice, the Inuit experience and the Inuit vision is right there in the beginning of anything that we work on."

Baffinland's regulatory public hearing extension is scheduled to resume in Iqaluit from April 12 to 21.

Akausivik continuing vaccine distribution Ottawa Last week, the Akausivik Inuit Family Health Team surpassed 1,000 doses of the Covid-19 vaccine delivered at their clinic.

The former president of Inuit Tapiriit Kanatami, Mary Simon came to Akausivik to get her shot.

"I realize that the pandemic has put a huge strain on everyone.

You have answered the call of duty in this time of great change in our lives," said Simon when she was at Akausivik.

"Today I saw and experienced a place where people cared for each other and looked out for one another ... individuals working hard every day to meet the needs of our community."

Inuit in the south can contact Akausivik to book an appointment in their Ottawa clinic at 613-740-0999, clinic hours are from 10:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

All Inuit adults are eligible, including family and caregivers.

Family Resource Worker training available Nunavut The Department of Family Services, in conjunction with Nunavut Arctic College, is introducing the Family Resource Worker Certificate Program.

This program is a pathway to the Social Service Worker Program, graduates will also earn credits which will go towards the Social Service Worker Diploma.

The first intake will be running rom March 22 to 26, with additional programs to be announced at a later date.

Family resource workers, foster care co-ordinators and clerks/interpreters are encouraged to apply.

Canada, Nunavut and NTI reaffirm commitment to support Inuktut education Iqaluit Canada's Minister of Canadian Heritage Steven Guilbeault announced on March 8 that the Government of Canada, the Government of Nunavut (GN) and Nunavut Tunngavik Incorporated (NTI) have signed a memorandum of understanding to help support and strengthen Inuktut language and education.

The Government of Canada said its reaffirming its commitment to invest $42 million over five years to support this agreement.

"Through initiatives such as this, we are ensuring that educators have the resources, skills and experience they need to teach Inuktut and strengthen Nunavummiut pride in their shared linguistic heritage," said Guilbeault.

Dancing souls with our ancestors Northern News Services ᐃᓄᑐᖃᖅ ᑲᑯᓚᒃ ᐊᕙᓪᓗᒃ ᐃᑭᑦᑎᔪᖅ ᓄᑕᐅᙱᑦᑐᒻᒪᕆᐊᓗᖕᒥ Pitquhirnikkut Ilihautinniq/Kitikmeot Heritage Society celeᖁᓪᓕᕐᒥ, ᑐᓂᔭᐅᓯᒪᔪᒥ ᐊᒪᐅᖓᓐᓂ. ᕿᑎᐊᓃᑉᐳᖅ ᐊᕐᕌᒍᓄᑦ brated a very special day on Saturday, March 6, in Cambridge 300 ᐊᒻᒪ 400–ᓄᑦ Burnside ᑰᖕᒥ.

Bay, Nunavut. Twenty-five years ago a vision and dream began

for Emily Angulalik, Reverend Keith Todd, Kim Crockatt and Ekvanna. At the time there was very little or no Inuinnaqtut books, information and a need to record Elder's stories.

From there the society began the important work of preserving, teaching and restoring the almost lost Inuinnaqtut. Today we have the Elder In Residence program where Elders sew, teach the language and tell stories at one of the most beautiful cultural centers in the circumpolar countries. There is traditional clothing, crafts, carvings and tools on display and recordings and videos of the stories of living out on the land with our ancestors.

Inuinnaqtut is still spoken by all our Elders, it is now being taught for few minutes a day in school, and there are college courses being held in Kitikmeot. As we celebrated the pihiit and huqullaaq was in our souls healing. Together our ancestors and namesakes were reunited in our souls as it was always meant to be. Let us keep Inuinnaqtut alive and strong as our ancestors are giving this message to carry it on.

Hockeytown rides again Rankin Inlet hosts youth tournament for U10 and U13 age groups

So about that pandemic stopping sports in its tracks … you knew it wouldn't affect hockey in Rankin Inlet, right?

Hockeytown, Nunavut hosted another youth tournament, this time for the U10 and U13 age categories from March 5 to 7. The age group would normally have been for the Powerful Peewees but that tournament isn't happening, much like the other annual tournaments that have been given the hook for this season due to Covid-19.

The players were divided up into four teams with the U10 division fielding its own all-star team while an all-girls team featured in the tournament.

Robert Kabvitok, who's helped to get things going event-wise this year,

In the final, the Wheat Kings would emerge victorious and exact a bit of revenge on Qavviit for the round-robin loss as they won by a score of 5-2 to claim the gold medal.

Kabvitok was a little worried before the final, though.

"I went into the dressing room and they were really quiet," he said.

"I wanted someone to say something or make a noise, something to ease their minds, but they were just focused."

The Jets won the bronze medal game by beating the Rockettes.

Next up is a planned senior tournament which Kabvitok said will incorporate the senior men's league, oldtimers, junior C, U18 and U16 teams in the community.

He said that should be a huge weekend.

"Everyone's excited for that," he said. "We're so lucky here to have hockey and (recreation co-ordinator) David Clark has done such a great job. We're lucky to have him. There are other places around the country where you either can't play or it's really limited and here, we're able to have games and tournaments. We just have to make sure we don't mess things up."

Walter Gretzky is perhaps the most famous hockey dad in ᕿᒪᐃᓚᐅᖅᐳᖅ ᓄᓇᐅᔪᒥ ᖃᐅᔨᒪᔭᐅᓛᖑᔪᒥ ᕼᐋᑭᒧᑦ history. There are others who are well-known but few could ᐊᑖᑕᐅᔪᒥ. hold a candle to this man's class.

Walter Gretzky was everything you could ever want in a sports parent: understanding, supportive, tough when he had to be. But at the end of the day, he was a father who wanted his kids to be successful.

He died on March 4 and the hockey world gave him the send-off he so deserved: sticks out and a fond farewell to a man who was beloved by everyone who got the chance to know him. I wasn't one of the lucky ones who had that chance, unfortunately.

Even his hearse procession had a true hockey tribute with hundreds of people lining the route to tap sticks, hockey's version of a standing ovation.

Wayne Gretzky delivered the eulogy and did it as plainly as it could have been because that's who his dad was. His father never went looking for the limelight because he never wanted it. He knew he was a parent and that was it.
