Iqaluit

Annie Buscemi's uplifting and lifeaffirming messages delivered via TikTok videos have become a daily must-see ritual for some of her 10,800 online followers.

Buscemi, an Iqaluit resident, who was born in Kimmirut, regularly greets her fans with an enthusiastic: "Ullaakkut! Good morning!"

As of Feb. 17, she had delivered 116 daysworth of reasons to stay alive, many of them with Inuit-specific references.

On Day 49, she encouraged people to keep living for the glorious sight of a vibrant orange and yellow sunset that looks like it's on fire, which also means tomorrow's going to be a beautiful day.

On Day 70, she encouraged her supporters to remain alive to write in their journals so they can later look back and see how much they've grown.

Her positive dispatches also caught the attention of Pauktuutit Inuit Women of Canada, who named her the organization's first Young Inuk Woman of the Year award winner on Feb. 11.

"Buscemi's engaging and encouraging manner incorporates aspects of Inuit culture into her daily affirmations," Pauktuutit wrote.

Because Buscemi knows some Inuit youth who are struggling with their identity, she seizes the opportunity to "point out aspects of our culture that we can find strength in."

She began the positive practice after an injury sidelined her pursuit of completing her apprenticeship as an electrician.

"It was really tough in my first month of my injury. I was really hard on myself," she admitted in regards to being forced to take time off of work.

"It was a little bit scary ... but I have a lot of support around me that kind of helps keeps me calm and reminding me that healing isn't linear."

Buscemi receives numerous messages from followers who thank her for her constructive tidings, but she also fields requests for advice from struggling individuals.

"I usually respond from my heart. Sometimes I tend to internalize a lot of things like that, so usually I have to debrief after I have a conversation with someone," she said, adding that she also has a list of links on her social media for contacting professional resources.

"It is a little bit overwhelming sometimes."

Iqaluit's Annie Buscemi plans to keep on delivering life-affirming messages online for as long as she can, highlighting aspects of Inuit culture that build strength.

Despite that, she said she's usually in a good mood because she's grateful to be alive – although receiving mail, dancing and coffee give her an extra boost.

"It's fun making different kinds of coffee drinks. I love coffee," said Buscemi, 23. "It makes me feel calm and it makes me feel happy."

Most of her inspirations come from within, although some are sparked by conversations with her grandparents or friends.

Receiving accolades for her efforts was a pleasant perk.

"Pauktuutit's recognition of me with this award means the world to me," she said.

"When I started listing reasons to stay alive, I never realized it would have this much of an impact, on myself and on others."

There's no end in sight to her positive vibes either. Buscemi said she plans to keep communicating her messages "for as long as I can."

Politicians tell of how they cope with internet critics and cyber-bullying

Many politicians espouse Pink Shirt Day and its associated anti-bullying message.

Some of those politicians themselves are subject to harassment, particularly online.

"In this day and age, cyber-bullying is a reality, especially during elections," says Cathy Towtongie, MLA for Rankin Inlet North-Chesterfield Inlet.

There have been occasions when not only was she attacked on the internet – often by anonymous individuals – but her family members were made victims as well.

"That is painful," she said, adding that such aggressive tactics have periodically made her reconsider remaining in politics. "Other times, defamation of character is used. At times, lies appear to be the whole truth. There is a cost to running in an election.

"It seems, we cross an invisible border – then we become a target, like (a) free for all. Nunavut is so small – it can ruin a person's life."

Towtongie has raised the

issue in the legislative assembly, searching for ways to ensure people cannot unfairly smear political candidates online without having their names appear alongside their posts for the sake of accountability. The cost of anonymous vilification can be that some would-be candidates won't run due to intimidation, she added.

"I wonder how we can unmask some of these virulent attackers who would be forced to reveal their names if they attack candidates anonymously behind a keyboard, or to have comments only with real names during candidate forums and questions, which I would prefer," Towtongie said in the legislative assembly last September.

Elections Nunavut 'monitors social media' Dustin Fredlund, Nunavut's chief electoral officer, responded that Elections Nunavut monitors social media but it's the responsibility of the RCMP to conduct investigations based on complaints from the public.

Fredlund explained that the Nunavut Elections Act prohibits candidates from

telling lies about their political competitors "and that's basically where it stops.

"If a candidate or someone in the community believes that someone is spreading lies about another candidate, that is against the law and those people can definitely either call our office and we will help them with the forms to fill out or go directly to the RCMP to lodge the complaint.

"The RCMP was very helpful during the election of doing the investigations," said Fredlund.

Since being elected in October 2019, Qaqqaq said she has kept a distinct line between her professional social media accounts and her personal ones – the latter have been neglected, she added, because she just doesn't have the time for it.

Dept of Education sharing resource guide with activities adapted to health regulations

Feb. 24 is Pink Shirt Day in Canada, also known as AntiBullying Day and the Department of Education is invititing Nunavummiut to join in on this occasion.

People are encouraged to wear pink on Feb. 24 and to show their support online using the social media hashtags #Ajunngiitunga and #PinkShirtDay, to share stories online about taking

a stand against bullying and to speak to family members about bullying.

"This year, the Department of Education will be sharing with schools a made-in-Nunavut Ajunngitugut! Pink Shirt Day: Schools resource Guide with activities that have been adapted to meet the health and safety measures for any stage a school may be in," said Minister of Education David Joanasie.

The day is celebrated in schools all over Canada and takes place during the last Wednesday of February each year.

During last year's Pink Shirt Day, Premier of Nunavut Joe Savikataaq took to social media and wrote, "respecting one another, standing up to bullying and working together show that kindness, encouragement and positivity will win in the long run."

"This year," says Joanasie, "we will be celebrating Pink Shirt Day on Feb. 24 to raise awareness by taking a stand against bullying.

"I encourage all Nunavummiut to wear pink on Feb. 24 to show that bullying will not be tolerated in Nunavut."

Housing, high-speed internet top senator's pre-budget priorities Nunavut deserves greater share of federal government's existing funds, Patterson says

Nunavut Senator Dennis Patterson has submitted his list of priorities for the territory ahead of the next federal budget, which is almost two years in the making.

Housing and high-speed internet remain the most pressing concerns, Patterson said, but further aid for Covid-ravaged small businesses is also critical.

"Housing always is on the top of everyone's list because it is so integral to so many other issues of concern in Nunavut, especially during this pandemic – overcrowding, its implications on health, on education, on employment," said the senator.

Broadband internet "must be urgently addressed," according to Patterson, who noted that the Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission (CRTC) has yet to announce any decisions for Nunavut despite awarding funds to the Northwest Territories and Yukon.

"We're still waiting," said Patterson.

of the Investing in Canada Infrastructure Program, which earmarked $151 million towards the construction an undersea fibre optic cable project to connect Nunavut to high-speed internet, expected to be complete by 2024.

Tremblay also mentioned a $49-million contribution to NorthwesTel to connect the Government of Nunavut and all 25 Nunavut communities in Nunavut to satellite internet. As well, he cited a $600-million Government of Canada agreement with Telesat for low-earth-orbit satellite high-speed internet capacity that's expected to be available in the North next year.

Billions for broadband "Our government recognizes that fast, reliable and affordable high-speed internet is a necessity, not a luxury, for all Canadians, including those living in rural, remote and Northern communities. Canadians need access to highspeed internet to telework, to access online medicine, to participate in online classes and more," Tremblay stated, adding that applications for the national $1.75-billion Universal Broadband Fund are being accepted until March 15.

Patterson said many of the priorities that he's identified wouldn't require new funding,

but instead a portion of existing pots of money that Ottawa has already announced, such as $180 billion over 12 years for national infrastructure and the creation of the Canada Infrastructure Bank in 2017, which seeks institutional and private-sector investors for projects that are deemed to be "in the public interest."

"I'm strongly advocating that Nunavut gets its fair share of those existing allocations," Patterson said.

In addition, the senator is calling for a greater percentage of fishing licences to be granted to Nunavut from adjacent waters.

Federal investments in Nunavut's natural resources – mining in particular – would yield "enormous benefits" of taxes, royalties and jobs, according to Patterson.

"That's another area where an investment can actually produce dividends to help tackle the deficit that everybody's concerned about," he said. "I think Nunavut has a huge opportunity to contribute to the economic recovery because of our resources and because of our regulatory regime, which involves Inuit fully in the evaluation of resource development projects and in assuring of the revenues."

Patterson added that he engaged in extensive consultations across Nunavut over

the past few months in arriving at this list of priorities.

"These recommendations are grounded in Northern voices," he said.

Nunavut MP Mumilaaq Qaqqaq agreed that housing remains the number one issue in Nunavut. She contends that the federal government should increase taxes on corporations "that make a lot of money here in Canada."

"It will be great to see what (the Government of Canada promises in the budget) but how that actually happens and what it looks like is something usually completely different," said Qaqqaq, who added that delays in delivering promised government funding is another concern.

Small businesses need help The Canadian Federation of Independent Businesses released a report in late January indicating that one in six independent business across the country is in danger of closing. Patterson said there are signs that the numbers could be even worse in Nunavut, especially in the tourism industry, where up to 60 per cent of territorial operators are contemplating shutting down, Travel Nunavut's research shows.

Federal loan programs have not been helpful, said Patterson.

Housing: "That the Government of Canada work with municipalities, developers, and not-for-profit organizations on innovative strategies for construction and delivery of affordable housing units."

Broadband internet: "That the Government of Canada facilitate the immediate flow of funds to improve broadband services and infrastructure in Nunavut from the various funding mechanisms currently available."

Infrastructure: Support for Grays Bay Road and Port, Kivalliq Hydro-Fibre Link, a new long-term water supply system for the City of Iqaluit and a deep water port in Qikiqtarjuaq.

Energy: "That the Government of Canada invest in the creation of green infrastructure including renewable energy projects with long-term community benefits led by Inuit and/or private industry" Businesses: "That the Government of Canada explore alternatives to business loans when creating monetary supports for Northern businesses throughout the pandemic."

Mining: "Invest in supports for mining in the North of critical minerals; create an enhanced and competitive North of 60 mineral exploration tax credit; provide funding assistance for specific Canadian resource projects as Canada once provided."

Equity for Inuit: "That the Government of Canada put in place co-developed mechanisms that would

allow for federal contributions resulting in Inuit equity/direct Inuit participation in future developments."

Fishing: "Repatriate shrimp and turbot licenses in the waters adjacent to Qikiqtani Inuit communities; engage with the Government of Nunavut and the QIA (Qikiqtani Inuit Association) on a fisheries reconciliation agreement to equip Inuit with the financial resources needed to increase Nunavut's ownership of adjacent resources in a manner that equitably reflects Atlantic jurisdictions."

Training: "That the Government of Canada engage with municipalities/hamlets throughout Nunavut and Inuit organizations to create training and retention programs; and that it expand the list of eligible expenses under infrastructure funding programs to allow for the training and retention of a local labour force, with particular incentives targeted toward Inuit employment."

Mental health: "That the Government of Canada continue to invest in the creation of mental health and addictions treatment centres in Nunavut; and that it invest in the training of Inuit mental health workers, based in the Nunavut, for more consistently available and culturally-appropriate mental health supports throughout the territory."

"Businesses that are underwater (financially) and facing challenges again in the coming season, businesses large and small are not willing to take on more debt. So there's got to be a better and different way of providing support," he said. "And hotels are essential services."

Patterson gave Ottawa credit for its assistance to airlines during the pandemic, however.

The federal government has been holding pre-budget consultations but, as of press deadline, had yet to announce a date for the delivery of Budget 2021.

In this digital age, it's easy to let the perceived anonymity we have online lead us astray.

People become armchair experts on a multitude of issues and rather than have a respectful conversation on subjects that they are passionate about, some choose instead to make cruel comments that detract from the original argument and really only serve to alienate people they were trying to sway to their viewpoint.

Cyber-bullying affects people of all ages, from youth in text messages and other forms of online communication all the way up to politicians being attacked for sharing their views on social media.

Anyone trying to use a position of power – whether that's social status in a peer group, or a position of authority in a community – to intimidate, upset or otherwise harm another person physically or emotionally is bullying.

We know from many years of studies that bullying has serious effects on the people who are treated in such ways.

Moving forward with a brighter vision In my View Harry Maksagak is a Cambridge Bay resident, former underground miner at the Lupin gold mine, now retired from the Government of Nunavut. He has been married for 50 years and has five children and numerous grand- and great-grandchildren.

It has been some time since I submitted an entry under my by-line of In My View. I will not attempt to give an explanation other than to say, "life happens."

A lot has happened since my last entry.

I have retired from Minerals and Petroleum Resources in the Government of Nunavut. I still have a few more months as chair of the Cambridge Bay Housing Association and that has proven to be a real challenge. I have had some health issues and I hope these will be resolved over the next few weeks.

As a former underground miner, I recognize the volatility of the industry and how the change of management can disrupt operations for a short spell then the site will pick up and move forward with a brighter vision and continued success of the extraction of the ore body.

Our Northern land will continue to be

quite mobile with people being transferred from one jurisdiction to another and bringing with themselves a perceived impression to transfer. Our Inuit, Metis and Inuvialuit can attest to people moving in from the south or from another region and somehow can make remarks or observations during a short stay without trying to absorb the history and development of that community. As Indigenous peoples moved in to an organized situation, the freedom of rights and movement and even a way of speaking are now scrutinized and has to be politically correct or acceptance.

But history has shown we (Indigenous

people) are resilient and strong. We should not hold it against individuals who choose to assume and belittle a community who accepted them into our lives and tried to make them feel invited, comfortable and accepted. We are more than happy to share our stories with anyone who asks.

With today's fast pace, there should be that concern by our professionals in justice, education, social development and so on to always be aware and cognizant of those who have not chosen to learn for whatever reason.

A sentiment that I like to express, "Where there is no justice, there is no peace; where there is no peace, there is no justice."

Baffinland fined $170,000 ĪØflî

Mining company must pay after heavy equipment operator died on the job in 2018

Baffinland Iron Mines has been fined $170,000 by the Nunavut Court of Justice for a 2018 incident that resulted in fatal injuries to a heavy equipment operator at the Mary River mine.

The penalty, under the Mine Health and Safety Act, was handed down Feb. 15 after the company pleaded guilty.

A victim fine surcharge of $25,500 was also imposed. That money will go to the Workers' Protection Fund under the Workers' Safety and Compensation Commission (WSCC).

The mine site worker died as a result of too little training in regards to operation of loaded heavy equipment in specific conditions at Mary River, according to the agreed statement of facts.

A combination of factors including speed, load weight and downhill gradient resulted in the Dec. 16, 2018 death.

Following the incident, mine operations were shut down and a report was submitted to the WSCC. "Baffinland co-operated with the investigation and immediately implemented several interim orders that have remained in place following restart of the mine.

Upon completion of Baffinland's investigation into the inci-

dent, additional measures to improve worker safety at the worksite have been identified and put in place," the WSCC stated in a Feb. 18 news release.

news Briefs Standoff ends after 18 hours Kinngait Police officers in Kinngait spent 18 hours negotiating a peaceful conclusion to a standoff with a man who had barricaded himself in a residence in the 1000 block of the community on Feb. 17.

The Mounties said they were responding to a residential disturbance call around 5 p.m. when the incident began.

"RCMP have been able to make contact with the male and have spoken with him on several occasions this evening. Additional specialized RCMP resources have been deployed to the community to assist in resolving this incident peacefully," the police stated in a news release.

Residents were asked to avoid the area and, if living close by, to remain in their homes.

Shortly before 11 a.m. Feb. 18, the man gave himself up to police.

The man was arrested, remains in police custody and is facing a number of Criminal Code of Canada offences relating to this incident. The police did not disclose his identity.

The RCMP called in support from the Nunavut RCMP Crisis Negotiation and Containment Teams and the Ottawa RCMP Emergency Response Team.

Nunavut RCMP also thanked residents of Kinngait for their support in bringing this incident to a successful conclusion.

GN advises people from NWT flight to self-monitor The N.W.T announced a positive case of Covid-19 related to domestic travel and the Government of Nunavut (GN) is taking precautions. On Feb. 12 the affected individual flew on Canadian North Flight 238 from Edmonton to Yellowknife, NT. health officials are contacting people who were seated between rows three to nine.

Any Nunavummiut who were on that flight seated in those rows are advised to contact their local health centre. Any other Nunavummiut seated outside of those rows are advised to selfmonitor for 14 days. The GN’s Department of Health notes that "the risk of transmission on domestic flights is quite low, but it is appropriate to take reasonable precautions."

Nunavummiut may be exempted from self-isolation in NWT Public health officials in the NWT say travellers from Nunavut can apply to skip the mandatory 14-day self isolation period.

This includes Nunavummiut isolating in the NWT right now, but you have to apply to ProtectNWT and must be asymptomatic.

The Office of the Chief Public Health Officer (OCPHO) says those arriving in the NWT from Nunavut will still need to submit a self-isolation plan and exemption request through ProtectNWT. They must receive an approved exemption letter from the CPHO before they can be exempt from self-isolation.

Anyone who has already arrived in the NWT from Nunavut can also apply for a retroactive exemption by contacting ProtectNWT. – Craig Gilbert

Rankin and Arviat strong ¥∂¿ú

Communities keep upbeat for mental health as Covid battle continues

Spirits remain as high as can be expected as the second round of the Moderna vaccine against Covid-19 makes its way across the Kivalliq region.

Rankin Inlet Mayor Harry Towtongie was proud of his community using its entire initial allotment of the vaccine and expects nothing different as the vaccine's second shot is delivered to the community.

Towtongie said once was enough for the community when Covid made its first appearance in Rankin and everyone is doing their best to keep the virus on the outside looking in. He said being in total lockdown is no fun and the number of people being vaccinated in Rankin shows how dedicated to the fight against Covid the community truly is.

"At first, a lot of people were saying they weren't getting the vaccine but then they decided they were once it was actually here," said Towtongie.

"I knew a lot of people who did that.

Whatever the reasons why they changed their minds, we used every shot sent to us the first time around and I expect it to be the same this week."

Towtongie said the hamlet has been doing everything it can to keep spirits up during the pandemic.

He said he's seen the effect the pandemic has had on people and that's a struggle that will continue until the virus has been defeated or brought under control.

"This has been hard on a lot of people, especially single mothers and people who live alone through all this.

"That was especially true when we were on total lockdown. We're not on lockdown anymore and it's a little different now, but I'm sure this has been difficult on many families also.

"We've been out of the lockdown for awhile and it doesn't seem quite as bad right now, so I think we've been very lucky that way to only have been under total lockdown for that one time.

"We had Covid here and then we got out of it. I think that had a lot to do with us believing we can deal with it by helping each other, communicating well and being vigilant in our efforts to protect each other and our community."

Towtongie said the financial support and food vouchers the community has received have gone a long way towards keeping the mood positive in Rankin.

He said it feels like the hamlet did a lot to help, but that came about due to a lot of help it received from government and a lot of different organizations and associations.

"We had our taste of it once and we don't want it back, so people are still doing their best to not let the coronavirus back into our town again. We had it and we don't want it anymore. Simple as that.

"We've lost a bit of our identity to Covid because we're so used to a lot of stuff happening in Rankin. It never stops here. We're almost like a little place that never sleeps.

"Things will get back to normal one day.

And when they do, the events will come back, maybe bigger than ever, and the crowds will come back, as well. I'm sure of it."

With a full lockdown continuing in Arviat, the vaccination clinics wrapped up in the community earlier this month with now more than 900 Arviarmiut immunized against the virus.

Mayor Joe Savikataaq Jr. said the community has done a wonderful job in keeping its spirits up through all that it's endured.

He said the hamlet has helped out with food baskets, cleaning supplies and game packages to help keep the kids occupied while forced to stay at home, but it's the people themselves who have made all the difference in keeping Arviat positive throughout its battle with Covid-19.

"Arviarmiut are very reliable, patient and persistent and they're showing that now that we're in the 90s in the number of days we've been in lockdown since the virus first found its way into our community," said Savikataaq.

Savikataaq said there's no doubt the flow of the community has been badly affected by the lockdowns.

But, he said, local radio is going above and beyond in trying to fill some of that void and

keeping Arviat's sense of community is strong and vibrant.

"Everyone's still being entertained by our local radio station, which has become quite the thing during our lockdowns.

"And our second round of the vaccine ended (Feb. 13), so we should be in a much better position in two weeks from now.

"You look at the delays in the south with the various vaccines and we've been very lucky to have had the access to it that we have had.

"The community is holding up well and all I can say to that is that's Arviarmiut for you."

Reminder to exercise caution around power lines Nunavut The Qulliq Energy Corporation (QEC) made an announcement Feb. 16 to remind Nunavummiut to be more cautious around power lines in the territory, especially while operating motor vehicles, including ATVs and snow mobiles.

They want people to remember the following to avoid power outages or serious injury or death: • Keep a minimum distance of three meters from power lines; • Keep a safe driving distance away from the base of power poles – QEC has installed bright orange coverings on guy wires in certain high traffic areas. Equipment supporting power poles like guy wires or cribs may be covered in snow; • Do not push snow towards the base of power poles or create high snow piles near overhead powerlines.

Road closure and traffic detour in Plateau Iqaluit Residents of the Plateau are advised by the City of Iqaluit of a road closure that started on Feb. 17 and will last until Mar. 3 to allow repairs to the water infrastructure.

Pingua Street from buildings 5016 to 5020 will be closed to traffic both ways.

Residents are advised to detour around the affected area and the affected area itself will be open only to local residents as crews work to make repairs.

Nunavut Food Security Coalition calls for proposals Nunavut The Nunavut Food Security Coalition is now accepting proposals for projects that will address food security in Nunavut for 2021-22.

Societies, municipal organizations and non-profit organizations can apply for funding for projects that: • Contribute to the development and/or continuation of a food security project; • Aim to increase the ability of Nunavummiut to improve their own food security through life and food skills development; • Encourage parents and children to learn and build food and life skills together; • Reduce barriers to food access.

Women Playing Hamlet set to hit the stage March 11 Iqaluit Tickets are now on sale for the Iqaluit Community Events' production of Women Playing Hamlet, by William Missouri Downs, starring and directed by Bibi Bilodeau.

The majority of the shows taking place from March 11, 12 and 13 are for ages 19 plus, however there will be an all-ages matinee show on March 13.

They will be hosted at the Frobisher Inn with doors opening 7 p.m. and the show itself 8 p.m. each night. The all-ages matinee show on March 13 will start at 2 p.m. with doors opening at 1:30 p.m.

Camosun College offering bridging program for physical education Nunavut The Northern Compass and Camosun College offering a bridging program for the Exercise and Wellness Access Program, specifically for Northern Grade 12 graduates between 18 and 25 years of age who are interested in recreation or physical activity related post-secondary education.

The program will run full-time remotely for 16 weeks starting March 15 and will give students one-on-one support to help them prepare for said program. Camosun College can help those who do not have internet access at home.

Work stalls on school calendars Iqaluit The Iqaluit District Education Authority (IDEA) would like to inform people that the Government of Nunavut's Department of Education's work on the 2021-22 and 2022-23 school calendars for Inuksuk, Joamie, Aqsarniit and Nakashuk schools cannot be finalized as proposed as of Feb. 18.

With the approval and ratification of Bill 25, the determination process for school calendars has been removed from District Education Authorities (DEA).

The Department of Education will now propose three calendar options to the DEAs to adopt with parent approval.

These options will dictate when schools open and close for the holidays as well as determine the days professional development will take place.

The newly proposed calendar options won't be available "until a few weeks from now," according to the IDEA's Facebook page.

Second time lucky for IMAA, Like this Iqaluit Music Society wins $1 million Arctic Inspiration Prize, seeks to train Inuit youth as music instructors for young children in a number of communities

The Iqaluit Music Society has a million reasons to celebrate after it was announced late Friday night they were the winners of this year's Arctic Inspiration Prize (AIP) – and they have high hopes in terms of what to do with their winnings.

The Society hopes to utilize their prize money in a long-awaited expansion project known as Imaa, Like this: Children and Youth Expressing Themselves Through Music.

Earlier in the week, the Iqaluit Music Society spoke to Nunavut News about what they would like to do if they won the AIP. "If we were to win this million-dollar prize, the proposed project is an expansion project for us," said Darlene Nuqingaq, project leader and co-founder of the Iqaluit Music Society.

Fellow project leader and music camp director Naiome Eegeesiak said, "if we win the money we want to train youth to become music leaders in their communities.

"We're looking to have all of Nunavut have music programs."

For 25 years the Iqaluit Music Society has been offering opportunies to Nunavut youth, including summer music camps and a fiddle club.

As a not-for-profit organization in Nunavut, Nuqingaq says "we can only get yearby-year funding so you're always chasing money so you can't grow."

With regards to the $1-million, "for us it's allowed us to dream of what might be."

The hope now is to expand beyond Iqaluit, as well as "to have more intentionally trained youth leaders from other communities and assist music camps happening across the territory,"

Due to the Covid-19 pandemic, they were unable to host their regular summer music camp with as many people as they would have liked.

In the second week of February, however, they hosted a music camp at Nanook School, something that went quite well according to Nuqingaq.

"Those kids are just loving it, we had our first day (Feb. 15) and it just went so well just to see what could happen if kids could be exposed on a more regular basis towards cultural opportunities."

The society sees a gap in music education among Nunavummiut who live outside of Iqaluit.

"Other schools don't usually have one, I know Pangnirtung has a fiddle club," Eegeesiak said, adding there might be one in Taloyoak.

"We're pretty excited about the ceremonies and finding out if we won and if we get to do our project for Nunavut," Eegeesiak adds.

Second time lucky Nuqingaq expressed excitement at the opportunity to be finalists for the Arctic Inspiration Prize once again having been finalists last year.

The pandemic has placed a greater emphasis on the society's goal of training local music educators as travel to and from the south may not always be a sure thing.

"We've always wanted to train more formally local music educators and Covid has taught us that we have the potential here to provide more music education opportunities for youth and not to rely so much on southern music specialists," said Nuqingaq.

Nunavut food sovereignty project Another Nunavut-based winner of the Arctic Inspiration Prize was announced that night as well.

Jimmy Oleekatalik, the manager of the Spence Bay Hunters and Trappers Organization in Taloyoak was awarded $451,000 for Niqihaqut, a project to "develop a new model of social economy and food sovereignty anchored in sustainable and innovative harvesting," according to a press release from AIP. Niqihaqut hopes to provide local incomes, contribute to healthier diets, and help preserve local knowledge.

Baffinland Iron Mines was in court Saturday morning to request an order preventing Nunavummiut from once again blockading the Mary River mine airstrip and tote road, as occurred from Feb. 4 to 10.

Lori Idlout, the lawyer representing the protesters, contended that Baffinland's requested order from the Nunavut Court of Justice should not be granted because the defendants have already dispersed, they are law abiding and because the "relevant facts are not yet all before the court.

"It is extraordinarily premature" for Baffinland to seek a legal injunction so soon when the facts are not agreed upon, the legal issues are so complex and the materials are not all available to the defendants,

according to Idlout. For the court to grant the injunction at this point in the legal proceedings would be "in the Canadian context ... somewhere between unprecedented and extraordinary," she stated.

The protesters – comprising hunters from Pond Inlet and Arctic Bay known as the Nuluujaat Land Guardians – left the mine site during the evening of Feb. 10, in advance of a written interim injunction issued by the court on Feb. 11.

They had parked snowmobiles and qamutiiks and erected tents and barriers on the airstrip and tote road for several days before that, according to Baffinland.

Some Inuit have expressed environmental and wildlife concerns as the mining company seeks to expand production, build a railway and increase shipping.

The Hamlet of Pond Inlet has

also raised a demand for a greater share of royalties to be directed to North Baffin communities.

Nunavut Tunngavik Inc. and the Qikiqtani Inuit Association sent a joint letter on Feb. 10 agreeing to meet with the protesters over their "environmental goals" relating to the Mary River project.

In court on Saturday, Baffinland asserted its authority to operate the Mary River mine under the Nunavut Land Claims Agreement and stated that it has all the required permits.

"These provisions are important because the protesters claim that the (mining) project is on Inuitowned land and they are exercising Inuit rights when blockading the airstrip and the tote road," Baffinland stated, adding that the protesters' actions thwarted critical flights and "had the potential for creating difficulties relating to the health and

safety of the people" at the mine.

The defendants contested the "tenor and accuracy of the facts" in the legal statements filed on behalf of Baffinland. Cross-examination is scheduled for Feb. 18 to 19.

The defendants in this case are identified as Namen Inuarak, Daniel Inuarak, Tom Naqitarvik, Jonathan Pitula, Christopher Akeeagok, Andy Kalluk, John Doe, Jane Doe and "for all other persons unknown to the plaintiff at a blockade at or near Mary River."

No matter what community you call home in Nunavut, there is always a need for sporting gear for youth to be able to play.

In Gjoa Haven, that problem was solved somewhat late last month as plenty of new youth hockey equipment was delivered courtesy of the Canadian Tire Jumpstart program.

And it was all a case of sheer luck as you'll see.

Katlyn Chaloner, who works at the community learning centre, grew up playing hockey and was wondering if there were any women who played in the community.

"I put up a post on Facebook asking if there was any interest in a drop-in night for women's hockey," she said. "I had so many responses about people who used to play and how there used to be a women's team here."

In all, Chaloner estimated that around 30 women were interested in playing but there was one problem: lack of gear.

This is where our story really begins.

"I was told to get in touch with Tracy Starnes, who does community relations with Sabina Gold and Silver, and I was told that they're always looking to sponsor community projects," said Chaloner. "They were on board and some other companies were as well."

In all, Chaloner was able to get $10,000 worth of donations toward getting adult equipment and jerseys flown in. She got in touch with Kyle Kugler, Hockey North's executive director, to see if there was any way he could help.

"I talked with him and he helped get our order ready," she said. "We got the jerseys first and the equipment was a bit behind so I called him to get an update on how that was going."

That's when Chaloner was thrown a curveball of sorts and where the youth gear comes into play.

"He asked me if I would be interested in having some youth equipment sent up," she said. "He told me that Jumpstart had sent two large donations and there was some largersized gear in there so the women could be partially equipped."

It was a win-win in Chaloner's eyes because the kids were in need of gear as well, she added.

"I told (Kyle) I would make it work," she said.

The gear arrived in the community earlier this month: 25 bags packed full of gear, enough for 45 full youth sets, and three boxes of hockey sticks.

Chaloner said it arrived faster than she thought it would, causing a bit of a headache as to how she was going to transport it.

Enter the Gjoa Haven RCMP. "My husband is stationed here and he and the other guys got everything gathered up," she said. "It took a couple of weeks to sort it all out into sizes."

Chaloner then went to talk to Matt Gee, who chairs the community's recreation committee, to see what to do with the gear.

"In smaller communities, kids don't always get the chance to play and so this would be a great opportunity to get kids out on the ice who wouldn't get that chance," she said.

With the help of volunteers, 38 sets of gear were loaned out on Feb. 14 for the duration of the arena season. To help get the players out learning the sport, the community arena is now holding learn-to-play sessions for players between the ages of four through nine every Sunday until the ice is taken out of the arena.

"There was so much excitement and we were there at the arena for hours," said Chaloner.

"Everyone waited patiently, there were no mass groups and we did it properly under

The community is currently at stage one of re-opening at the present time. Once the season is over, players will be asked to return the gear and it will be sanitized and stored for the following season, said Chaloner.

Gee said he wished every child in the community could be outfitted but there could be more opportunities in the future.

"The hope is, if everyone shows up to practice and takes care of their gear, we can continue to source more charitable donations in the years to come," he said.

Gee also said in lieu of a thank-you, he'd like to see something a bit more tangible.

"When people say thank you, I want to say 'The kids can thank us themselves in 10 years when they win the Kitikmeot Cup'," he said.

One of my favourite things to marvel at are those groups who try for world records for the longest continuous game in a chosen sport. A group of curlers in Yellowknife tried to set the world record one year for the longest game ever played and by the time day three rolled around, they didn't even know where the four-foot was.

This story out of Alberta, though, has a very happy ending because there's a very good chance 40 players just set a new mark in terms of game time and raising a ton of money in the process.

The group of took to the ice in Edmonton and began on Feb. 4. (Oh, I should add that everyone isolated before hitting the ice just in case someone feels like tattling on a bunch of people trying to raise money for cancer research.) It was all in support for the Cross

Cancer Institute in the Alberta capital, in case I didn't mention it earlier.

It was Team Hope vs. Team Cure when the puck dropped. They played. And played. And played. And played. And played some more.

And played a bit more. All in the comforting temperatures of roughly -26 C on average each evening. They finally stopped playing on Feb. 15 with Team Hope squeaking out a 2,649-2,528 decision on the scoreboard but the important score is yet to come.

Here are the official stats from the game: 252-plus hours, 572 volunteer shifts, hundreds of pucks shattered because of the cold, most amount of blistered feet in a hockey game.

Simply amazing but the statistic that means the most is the tally. As of press time, the game raised in excess of $1.84 million and it's still climbing.

Guinness World Records had better give this the seal of approval. Plain and simple.

Good Idea: A group of 40 people coming together to set a record and raise a ton of money for cancer research.
