Joamie School's new principal reflects on teaching journey 'I knew that Nunavut was a place that I wanted to live' says Scott MacDonald

Almost a decade ago, Scott MacDonald's curiosity for teaching in Nunavut would set the wheels in motion, leading him to eventually become a principal in Iqaluit. This school year, MacDonald will continue his journey as an educator, but this time as the leader of his school.

During the final year of his Bachelor of Education program at Mount Saint Vincent University in Halifax MacDonald took a course about the history and education of Nunavut.

"I thought I'd try it. I didn't know much about Nunavut," explained MacDonald, who was raised in Springhill, N.S. As part of the university course, he was encouraged to apply for a one-month teaching placement in Nunavut during the spring of 2010. With his travel and accommodation expenses covered, he accepted a teaching opportunity in Pangnirtung.

While teaching in the community, he began applying for teaching positions in Nunavut for the upcoming school year.

"I just sort of applied for every job because, like anyone, I needed a job. But, I didn't even apply to jobs in Nova Scotia because I knew that Nunavut was a place that I wanted to live," said MacDonald.

In addition to the desire for a job up North, it was the outdoors and "slower paced" lifestyle that attracted him.

Within days of returning to Halifax, before even graduating, the 25-year-old was offered his first teaching job as a Grade 7 generalist teacher in Pond Inlet.

"I just felt so lucky," he said.

"I'm fresh out of university, a job in a place that I want to go experience ... a lot of my classmates were setting up for substitute teaching and here I am walking into an indeterminate job in Pond Inlet – a beautiful community."

MacDonald spent the next five years in Pond Inlet teaching middle and high school students various subjects including math,

science, English and social studies.

The "biggest challenge" for him was to "meet the needs of every student." In a class, "there's such a wide range of learners and different abilities," he explained, adding creating lesson plans to accommodate every student is challenging.

In 2015 he decided to head back to Halifax and earn a Master's of Education in leadership at Acadia University.

During that one year away from Nunavut, MacDonald said it made him appreciate living and working in Nunavut even more. The "hustle and bustle" of Halifax made him miss the "slow-paced" lifestyle up North.

After returning to Pond Inlet in 2016 and teaching for a year, MacDonald applied for a vice principal position at Joamie Ilinniarvik School.

"I almost didn't apply, because ever since I thought about becoming a teacher high schools (and) middle schools were where I wanted to teach," he said.

However, within a month of being a vice principal at the elementary school, "all my

apprehensions were gone," said MacDonald.

The students are excited about learning and they have energy, explained MacDonald. "It's just a lot of fun."

In addition to being the vice principal, MacDonald taught students physical education and literacy over the years.

In Feburary 2020, he stepped up to serve as the acting principal for one month before schools closed due to Covid-19 on March 17. With support from his school staff, MacDonald applied for the position.

"I had lots of support from all the staff members, implicitly and explicitly saying, 'You have to become principal,'" he said.

"If I didn't feel they wanted me to be principal, I don't think I would have applied.

But, I really felt comfortable that the teachers supported me and embraced me. And in turn, I can embrace them."

According to MacDonald teachers have "hardest job" in the schools. "They're the real work horses in the school," said the principal, adding he is looking forward to helping teachers help students and welcoming his students back to school.

Nunavut's newest school, Iglulik High School opened its doors to students and staff on Aug. 17.

The 3079 square metre facility has 12 classrooms, including six standard classrooms, two reading resource rooms and a classroom

Iglulik also has two other schools: Sivuniit Middle School, previously known as Ataguttaaluk High School and Ataguttaaluk Elementary School. The latter was built in 1968, making it one of the oldest schools in the territory.

According to the Department of Education, the age, condition and utilization of the current facility are the main factors used to determined whether a new school will be constructed.

Utilization refers to the school's total student teaching area capacity and the students attending the school, explained the department. "It is represented as a percentage of the school's enrollment figures divided by the teaching area capacity of the building," said the department.

During the 2018-2019 school year, the utilization at the Ataguttaaluk Secondary School, which served Grade 8 to Grade 12 students, was at 115 per cent.

The new high school has the capacity to serve 229 students; enrolled in Grade 10 to Grade 12. The department estimates a utilization rate of approximately 82 per cent for the

2020-2021 school year.

With Igulik High School as the most recent addition, Nunavut now has 45 schools.

Future plans for building schools The Department of Education is presently in the design phase for two other school building projects; the expansion and renovation of Sakku School in Coral Harbour and the expansion of École des Trois-Soleils in Iqaluit.

The construction on both projects is anticipated to begin next summer.

The department added, "Our target is to tender for construction in January 2021."

Built in 1979, Sakku School was last renovated in 1995. The plan is expand the building to include more classrooms and a large gym and new portable classrooms. The school will get a 10,764 sq. ft. addition.

Iqaluit's École des Trois-Soleils, built in 2001, has never been renovated. It will grow by 16,146 square feet to accommodate classrooms for high school students and a spacious gymnasium.

According to the department, Covid-19 has not impacted the design schedule for either school.

School year begins with apprehension, reassurance GN, DEAs, teachers and parents try to navigate uncertainties wrought by Covid-19

Covid-19 caused the cancellation of classes from mid-March into June, but it hasn't stopped the resumption of schools for 202021.

While there are precautionary measures in place to diminish the potential hazards of the pandemic, parents like Janell Kamimmalik of Gjoa Haven can't help but feel a little uneasy.

"I know I shouldn't be worried but it's the kids, young kids. Some kids have problems with their health and never know what (might) happen," said Kamimmalik, who has children in kindergarten and Grade 1 and younger siblings in various grades.

She said she wishes students and teachers would wear masks.

The Department of Education, in consultation with Nunavut's chief public health officer (CPHO), isn't requiring children under age 13 to don masks. Students over age 13 may need to wear non-medical masks in certain situations, such as while riding a school bus and those masks will be provided by schools.

In Naujaat, district education authority (DEA) chair Asina Angotingoar said some parents were apprehensive prior to the Department of Education's back-to-school plan being released, but many have since been reassured that safety will be maintained.

"They were nervous first and (now) they're settled down ... they're comfortable now," she said.

Alan Sim, chair of the Cambridge Bay DEA, said his DEA "is happy with the direction provided by the department."

He added that the only feedback he's seen from parents so far has been on social media and it has been positive, which is reflected in increased attendance at the primary school.

Feedback from teachers is more difficult to obtain, at least publicly. John Fanjoy, president of the Nunavut Teachers' Association, said his organization is withholding comment until the Department of Education forwards a summary report of DEA plans in September.

The Department of Education has devised a four-stage plan. The territory is in stage one because there are no cases of Covid-19 in Nunavut. Despite that, steps are still being

Students are to sit at their own desks, which "must be set up with an equal space between all desks or tables to maximize the space between students without lowering the number of students in the classroom," accord-

ing to the Department of Education.

If Nunavut enters stage two or three, staggered attendance can be introduced, whereby students come to school during different times of the day or alternating days.

Educational facilities will shut down if Nunavut reaches stage four and remote instruction for students will ensue.

In the meantime, it's mandatory for parents to send their children to school unless they've registered for a formal home-schooling program under the supervision of the DEA.

Nunavut will receive $5.75 million through the federal government's Safe Return to Class Fund announced Wednesday. The money was divided among provinces and territories based on the number of children ages 4 to 18 within each jurisdiction.

The funds will be used to support adapted learning spaces, improved air ventilation, increased hand sanitation and hygiene and purchases of personal protective equipment and cleaning supplies, all made necessary by the Covid-19 pandemic.

By Tuesday morning, students across the territory will have headed back to classrooms that have sat dormant since March 17.

A healthy dose of caution and quick action from health officials and Nunavummiut alike have kept the territory Covid-free, but it doesn't ease all the worries of parents as we head into an unprecedented school year.

Welcome to fall time weather already and Christmas in 4 months and less. Where has the spring and summer gone? It seems time just flew by and now fall is here.

Weather has been cooler and with rain and winds and at times it was perfect to go for few more boat trips to mainland to go hunting and berry picking. Heard there were those darn grizzly bears, such a nuisance, getting at people's camps, tent frames and cabins. They do make quite a mess in search of food. It is almost time to have full-time bear monitors out there to keep residents and campers safe.

As our communities grow more with population, many more cabins and tent frames are being built all over the island and out along the Northwest Passage and at mainland. Our land is so precious and beautiful we need to keep protecting and looking after it well.

With climate change happening it seems more wildlife coming to the arctic and crossing the Arctic Ocean to get to the island.

There have been whales seen out at Gravel Pit on the ocean, so exciting. Not many whales come our way to Cambridge Bay area, but you never know nowadays what will show up on our land and waters.

During this pandemic there have been ways to keep safe from the virus and one way was to encourage residents with their families to go out camping to the cabins and tents and tent frames, which makes sense as it is a way of social distancing and not having to stay in town. Inuit already camp all the time, any chance they get, they are out the door and gone camping.

So far, there are no positive cases in Nunavut and let us all keep it way by practicing new rules and less crowds at functions such as Northern Games, Omingmak Frolics, Nunavut Day and feasts etc. which has changed our daily lives. Hopefully soon we can get back to our routine days of our lives.

School has now begun in Cambridge Bay, Nunavut and our elementary school has made their record number of students, with more than 240 students registered at Kullik Ilikhakvik Elementary School! Good luck to all our wonderful children in school, have a great year.

preschool program starting and they even have a bus program for their students! Just too cute to see all our beautiful children all excited and happy to go to preschool.

Now that school has started up again all our youth programs and camps and Anaana's Camp are all closed till next summer again and at this time we wish to thank all the hard working staff who kept our children safe and happy and busy during the summer months.

The youth also have great programs under the alcohol and drug programs offered by the Hamlet.

In order to ensure the health and safety of students, food programs in Nunavut will be modified depending on the Covid-19 situation, says the Department of Education. The changes will take place based on the different stages outlined 2020-21 Opening Plan for Nunavut Schools: Health and Safety.

During the school year, every school in Nunavut has a food program, said Troy Rhoades, communications officer with the Department of Education. This may include breakfast, snack and lunch programs depending on the school's capacity, needs and resources available, he said.

In Stage 1, the food programs, which are run by school staff and community volunteers, will run as normal with increased personal hygiene measures for participants.

In Stages 2 or 3, the participants in food programs must adhere to physical distancing orders as required by Dr. Michael Patterson, Nunavut's Chief Public Health Officer (CPHO).

"Increased measures must be taken to protect food program participants," said Rhoades.

During Stage 4, the final stage, the food programs may be reduced, adapted or eliminated.

The Department of Education along with the CPHO will work

with each community and school to determine how food security can be addressed.

In Nunavut, food programs are essential for supporting the food security and providing students with the energy to focus on learning.

A hungry student cannot learn, explained Everett Igobwa, who was Inuujaq School's principal last June.

"We are cognizant of the fact that there is food insecurity in Arctic Bay," he had said and that is why "we are going well beyond the call of duty to provide at least one meal for them."

When school closed on March 17, 2020 due to Covid-19, Igobwa and his teachers continued their food programs until June. The program was run by the District Education Authority and fed over 200 students.

Although food programs are available to all students in Nunavut, the Department of Education estimates about 75 to 85 per cent of students access the programs offered at schools.

Financial Support amid Covid-19 On April 3, 2020, the Government of Nunavut and Nunavut Tunngavik Incorporated (NTI) collaborated to invest $2 million in community food programs for children and elders in response to the Covid-19 pandemic.

"School closures have left too many of Nunavut's children without the breakfast or lunch programming that helped alleviate food security issues in our communities," Premier Joe Savikataaq had said during the announcement.

Over $2 million in funds were distributed to hamlets to deliver community food programs that met the specific needs of each community, said Rhoades.

He added that food programs are supported by Community Wellness plans. These plans are funded by the federal government through the Department of Health.

They are administered by sponsoring agencies such as hamlets or district education authorities (DEAs). Some schools, hamlets or DEAs may also seek other thirdparty funding or donations to supplement their food programs.

Jason Rochon, a student support assistant at Joamie Ilinniarvik School, ran Iqaluit's Breakfast in a Bag program when schools closed in March. He obtained $25,000 from NTI for the program. Additionally, he received donations from across Canada to feed the hungry students in Iqaluit.

The program ended in June, costing $91,455 all told.

"I hope breakfast programs are back better then ever and delivered in the safest way possible," said Rochon.

Elders welcome despite Covid concerns Schools will continue to call upon Nunavut's senior citizens

While parents and guardians are strongly discouraged from entering schools unless making arrangements in advance, Elders will continue to be welcome within the halls of learning during the 202021 school year.

Public health orders are in place to reduce the risk of transmitting Covid-19, meaning school visitors are being kept to a minimum. Exceptions will be made for Elders who are delivering educational and cultural benefits to students during scheduled hours, according to the Department of Education.

School staff are required to keep a log of Elders visits.

The documentation will outline when Elders came into the building and who they visited. This will assist in contact tracing, should cases of Covid-19 arise.

Elders will also be asked self-assessment questions pertaining to Covid risk and possible virus symptoms and they may not enter a school if they answer yes to any of the questions, the Department of Education stated.

District education authorities each determine their own rate of pay, but the Department of Education recommends at least $30 per hour or $250 per day. That guideline jumps to $500 if Elders supply their own equipment such as snowmobiles, qamutiik, tents and the like.

In 2019-20, there were 205 Elders who were certified as DEA employees across the territory.

Asina Angotingoar, chair of the Naujaat District Education Authority and Alan Sim, chair of the Cambridge Bay District Education Authority, said they plan to call upon the wisdom of Elders in their respective communities despite the pandemic.

"If they want (an) Elder, we let them," Angotingoar said, adding that an Elder addressed Naujaat students on the opening day of school, which was Aug. 10 in her community.

Security guard tests positive for Covid-19 at Nunavut isolation hub in Ottawa

Ottawa A security guard at Ottawa's Residence Inn, an isolation hub for Nunavummiut, has tested positive for Covid-19, according to Ottawa Public Health.

Ottawa Public Health informed the GN of the positive test on Wednesday and indicated the staff member was likely infectious while working shifts on Aug. 16, 17, 18 and 19. The GN's Department of Health is working to identify any possible exposure between the staff member and clients who were in isolation during that time.

"We are currently establishing what risk, if any, there is to Nunavummiut and we will begin contact tracing in territory if necessary," said Dr. Michael Patterson, Nunavut's chief public health officer.

There's a possibility that those currently isolating at the Residence Inn in Ottawa will be delayed in returning to Nunavut.

"We will make all decisions based on the best medical advice and take the necessary steps to keep everyone safe," said Health Minister George Hickes.

Any Nunavummiut who were in isolation between Aug. 16-19 at the Residence Inn in Ottawa and have since travelled home to Nunavut are asked to monitor for symptoms of Covid19. It is recommended that these individuals also maintain strict social distancing.

Symptoms of Covid-19 include a fever, cough or difficulty breathing.

Young women to explore working in trades

Kangiqliniq/Rankin Inlet Young women from all over Nunavut will be coming to Rankin Inlet this week for special program dedicated to exploring work in the trades.

The three-day workshop is being put on by Skills Canada.

It will feature 30 students between Grades 9 and 12 from 16 communities. The participants will get to try their hand at carpentry, machine operation and more. The program will be run at the NAC Trades Centre from Aug. 24 to 26.

Federal government commits $82.5 million to enhance Indigenous mental health supports

Nunavut The Government of Canada has announced $82.5 million to boost mental health and wellness supports for Indigenous communities.

Stress and anxiety caused by the Covid-19 pandemic was cited specifically as an impetus for the funding in a statement attributed to Minister of Indigenous Services Marc Miller on Aug. 25.

Cheesecake, cinnamon buns and cream puffs, oh my!

Pat-a-cake, pat-a-cake baker's man, bake me a cake as fast as you can!

This isn't a problem for Jessie Ann Kaosoni of Cambridge Bay, she can whip up a cake in no time at all.

Kaosoni had watched her mom cook and bake ever since she can remember and was taught to bake from her mother-in-law, the late Rosie Tologanak, who was taught to cook and bake at the DEW Line Site.

"I remember living in Coppermine and my mom got all my ingredients together for me to make cookies, I remember stirring it all together and when my mom came back to check on me I had eaten all the cookie dough," said Kaosoni.

In 2002 Kaosoni was selected for a camp cook training program that took place on site at the Lupin Gold Mine camp being taught by an instructor from the Northern Alberta Institute of Technology.

It was a success for her, "All my tests scored 100 per cent, even my overall score was 100 per cent. Lupin Mine hired me right after the course was done," Kaosoni said.

"I began selling baked goods when my friends would see me post pictures of my baking on social media and began making orders. I have been selling baked goods for over five years now.

"Preparing and cooking your own food is so much healthier than buying processed or boxed food. If I can teach anyone to cook or bake it would help them and their families financially. I love feeding people good food

and everyone should feel the same, I know I'm not right without a good meal," said Kaosoni.

She gets a mix of all ages wanting her to show them certain recipes and what techniques she uses with her own collection of over 40 recipes that she makes from scratch and has added or omitted her own ingredients.

Her favourites to make are cheesecakes, cinnamon buns, angel food trifles, cream puffs, breads and cakes.

"Baking is my passion, when I am down I bake to uplift myself and it works every time. I praise Martha Stewart and all of her efforts but I can show her a few things!" she said with a laugh. "Living way up North you don't have a fancy kitchen and fancy equipment so you really have to improvise with some recipes and techniques. I really wish to show her my cooked pudding compared to hers," said Kaosoni.

Kaosoni would love to start and own her catering business, but in order to do that she needs a business licence and being of Inuvialuit status and living in Nunavut has her running into many roadblocks.

"I am not eligible for any type of business grants and loans and when I tried to apply through my beneficiary I was not eligible as well because I live in Nunavut.

"This is the same with my sewing supplies application, I wanted to buy supplies to clothe my family but was denied from both Nunavut and Inuvialuit. I refuse to change my Inuvialuk status as both my grandparents are of Inuvialuit descent."

Despite her challenges Kaosoni continues to bake and teach those who want to learn.

Baker Lake's 11 graduates share pre-recorded messages and a parade

The community of Baker Lake has always embraced the celebration of its graduates. Although the enthusiasm is still there, this year things will be a little different due to Covid-19.

Like other schools across the territory students at Jonah Amitnaaq Secondary School took part in a socially distanced ceremony when they accepted their diplomas on Aug. 28.

"Obviously because of Covid-19 protocols we've had to adapt what we do," principal Chris Snow told Nunavut News.

There are 11 students graduating from Baker Lake's high school in 2020. Snow said that in order for safety measures to be met, the school would be having an individualized ceremony for each student.

This means that each graduate was to take turns getting their diploma with their immediate family present.

During the ceremony, each student had pre-recorded messages played from the education minister as well as the class valedictorian.

"It's our way of still being able to pro-vide the ceremony for our grads the way we deserve," said Snow.

Following the graduation ceremonies there was a parade planned through the town.

Then between 6 and 8 p.m. the school and the hamlet teamed up to do a radio call-in program so that extended family members and friends who could not attend the ceremony could offer their well wishes.

The hamlet has also chipped in to provide an opportunity for the graduates to celebrate among themselves.

Normally there would be a community feast and square dance at the community hall to celebrate the achievement of the graduates.

Because that won't be possible, the hamlet has planned to throw a small outdoor jigging event at the local baseball diamond on Aug. 28.

Snow said he was especially proud of this year's graduates, considering half of the curriculum had to be completed remotely due to Covid-19.

"They've definitely overcome adversity given that our school year was interrupted. We are definitely very pleased to and proud of those students," Snow said.

"We are looking to celebrate that success with their families."

Nearly half of women in territories experienced unwanted sexual behaviours: Statistics Canada In Nunavut, 25 per cent of women and 11 per cent of men said they endured such behaviour

Close to half of women (48 per cent) in Canada's territories and nearly one-third of men (32 per cent) experienced inappropriate or unwanted sexual behaviour in a public space, in the workplace or online, according to 2018 data that Statistics Canada released on Wednesday morning.

In a public space, such as on the street, in a bar or restaurant or while using public transportation, 35 per cent of women in the territories said they had experienced at least one undesired sexual behaviour towards them. By comparison, 16 per cent of men reported the same.

Twenty-seven per cent of women and seven per cent of men reported being targeted by unwanted sexual attention defined by actions such as whistles, calls, gestures, stares or suggestive body language. Twenty-two per cent of women and 10 per cent of men said they had been subjected to unwanted touching.

One in four women and one in 10 men in the territories experienced this type of unwanted sexual behaviour more than twice in 2018.

"Compared with people who experienced one or two unwanted sexual behaviours in a public space, people who experienced them multiple times were more likely to report emotional or psychological impacts, or changes in their habits or behaviours," the Statistics Canada report states. "Although no direct causal link can be established, they were also more likely to rate their mental health as poor or fair, to have low satisfaction with their lives and

to have seriously considered suicide."

Yukon residents were the most likely to have been the target of unwanted sexual behaviours. In that territory, 41 per cent of women and 19 per cent of men said they experienced it. In the Northwest Territories, 38 per cent of women and 18 per cent of men reported that they had experienced unwanted sexual behaviours in a public space, whereas in Nunavut, 25 per cent of women and 11 per cent of men said they endured such behaviour.

The incidents were more common in the capital cities of each territory, with the proportion of victims rising to 46 per cent in Yellowknife, 44 per cent in Iqaluit and 42 per cent in Whitehorse. The study attributes this to higher population density, a greater degree of anonymity and a greater number of public spaces.

Across the territories, 41 per cent of non-Indigenous women, 39 per cent of First Nations women, 41 per cent of Metis women and 29 per cent of Inuit women reported being the target of unwanted sexual behaviours. There was no statistically significant difference among men, however.

The lower rate among Inuit women was attributed to two possible factors: 83 per cent of Inuit women live outside the capital city, in small communities where most residents know each other. As well, some studies have suggested a "normalization of violence among some Inuit women" in a territory where the rate of sexual assaults is high, so some less serious unwanted sexual behaviours may not be perceived as having a violent nature, the analysis states.

Thirty-five per cent of women in the territories said they had experienced at least one undesired sexual behaviour towards them in a public space in 2018, according to data that Statistics Canada released on Wednesday.

In the workplace, 31 per cent of territorial women and 16 per cent of men said they were the targets of sexual jokes, touching, sexual attention or comments or insults because of gender or sexual orientation in 2018, the study revealed.

vious 12 months, 24 per cent of territorial women and 16 per cent of men had experienced unwanted behaviours online.

Threatening or aggressive emails as well as sexually suggestive or explicit images or messages were the most common forms of online harassment.

Kinngait man shot to death was wielding knife, police reveal Nunavut Coroner Services will conduct an inquest

Nunavut RCMP have made public some details pertaining to the shooting death of Attachie Ashoona, who was involved in a confrontation with a police officer in Kinngait on Feb. 26.

On that evening, Kinngait RCMP received a report of a man dragging a woman by her hair as she was screaming for help. A second call indicated that Ashoona was inside a residence fighting with a relative.

The police arrived at the residence and spoke with the relative outdoors. The man had blood on his face and appeared to have been engaged in a fight, according to the RCMP. Ashoona was then heard yelling from inside the household that he was getting a

knife. The police were unaware of whether the woman they were called about earlier was also inside the residence.

Two officers entered the home and saw Ashoona with a knife in hand, which was raised above his shoulder.

"Mr. Ashoona told the officers he was going to kill them and to shoot him and proceeded to move toward the officers," the RCMP stated in a news release issued Wednesday afternoon.

The officers drew their pistols and gave commands to stop and to drop the knife. Ashoona approached one of the Mounties and reportedly made stabbing motions. The officer, while walking backwards, continued to order Ashoona to stop.

The Mountie was eventually cornered and Ashoona closed the gap to within three feet, according to the RCMP.

The officer then fired a pistol twice, striking Ashoona.

The police said Ashoona was provided with immediate medical care. Further assistance was requested from health centre staff. However, he was pronounced deceased at the scene a short while later.

Ottawa Police Service conducted an independent investigation into the actions of the officer and found no reason to lay charges.

Nunavut Coroner Services will be conducting an inquest into Ashoona's death.

"This was a difficult situation for the Ashoona family, the police officers involved and Mr. Ashoona, who lost his life. Our thoughts are with the community of Kinngait and all affected by this event," said Supt. Amanda Jones, commanding officer of Nunavut's RCMP.

The Iqaluit Speed Skating Club has been looking to get new crash mats for a long time. The cost was what was

holding them back.

The club was named winners of the Intact Insurance Club Excellence Award by Speed Skating Canada on

Aug. 24. They beat out four other clubs, including the Yellowknife Speed Skating Club, to take home the honour and the $10,000 prize that came with it.

Because sneaking women into the bubble is such a great idea, right?

Can it really snow chocolate? It can if you live in Olten, Switzerland.

The Lindt and Spruengli chocolate factory is located there and the plant which makes it sprung a leak, causing cocoa nibs to rain down on the town. The company said it all happened following a minor defect in the cooling ventilation which, combined with some wind, saw the town become covered in a light chocolaty coating. Why can't that happen here?

All we get is frogs.

Anyway: Play stupid games ...

Look, I have no doubt living in the professional sports bubble can be a drag. I mean, just look at LeBron James who, when not extolling the virtues of how we should all live and how we should think, has to struggle with a $500-per-night suite or the $79 meals or the other free stuff they have to put up with.

But what about some togetherness? It gets lonely, especially for those who don't have a family. So what do you do?

Easy – you invite some company back ... so long as you can sneak them into the bubble. That's the tough part and there have been some athletes who have tried to be creative.

Take Kemah Siverand, for example. Siverand, who is now a former member of the Seattle Seahawks, did his best with James McCarthy earlier this month to hide a lady friend of his by dressing her up in team merchandise in an attempt to trick surveillance video. Didn't work and that's why the team cut him loose.

Siverand mea culpa'd on Aug. 24 in a statement (totally written by him, of course) in which he said it was a lapse in judgment, he wasn't thinking, he let the team down, it's a learning experience, I'm sorry etc. It was all he could do because he got caught.

Now, should this incident ruin his life? No. We all do dumb things and I stress "all". Don't you tell me you haven't done something you wish you didn't do. We are fallible by nature. Siverand screwed up.

It even happened down under as Elijah Taylor, who plays with the Sydney Swans of the Australian Football League, got caught with his girlfriend while the team was in the bubble in the city of Perth earlier this month. Lekhani Pearce is her name and she reportedly crossed a golf course and hopped two fences to be with her man.

A couple of players caught Taylor and Pearce together and went to tell the team's head of operations about it. Taylor has been suspended by the team for the rest of the season but it shouldn't be a life sentence. He screwed up.

Hell, there are even reports that NBA players are sneaking women in and players have clammed up due to an informal agreement to not use the snitch line the league has set up to report breaches of the bubble.

If anything, it's nothing but a case of the classic "Rules for thee, but not for me" song and dance athletes and celebrities like to flaunt. You little people need to be locked down and masked up to the throat but us? We're elites, don't you know?

We're special like that.

Maybe we'd take them a little more seriously when they spoke if they didn't commit hypocrisy every time they took a step.

Has it come to this?

The Canadian Football League won't have a 2020 season owing to the pandemic and no loan from the federal government to help pay the bills. I'll have more to say on that later.

So with no revenue for teams – and in a league which depends on the gate more than most, that could be certain death – the league is coming up with a way to raise money.

You, too, can be part of the Grey Cup Fan Base and have your name engraved on the league's championship trophy.

I'm not kidding – you have the chance to buy a spot on what will become a permanent fixture. It will measure 1.23 metres, be made of Canadian maple and aluminum and will be the base in which the cup sits upon when it makes appearances around the country.

If you're a season ticket holder – and there's a good chance a lot of you aren't living here in the North – it will set you back $349 while the rest of us plebs will have to shell out $399. Listen, I love the CFL and it's a noble idea. In a time where money is tight for a lot of people, you have to try and find any sort of revenue stream out there. I'm just not convinced this is the best way to do it.

And as for the federal government, this was where it could have come through. If Prime Minister Justin Trudeau was willing to fire off nearly $1 billion to the Kielburger brothers in that silly, stupid WE charity scandal, surely there was

$30 million to give to the league in a loan situation. Trudeau's been handing out free Bordens from the magic money tree behind the west block of Parliament Hill like candy. Why not allow a 100 per cent-based Canadian business to run its operations?

Priorities, I guess. That's all I got for this week.
