Walrus hunter recounts harrowing story of survival êêΩËîΩÇéíÇÀî á·∆¿ÖÀî

On Oct. 18, 1994, 10 Inuit hunters set out on a journey from Iqaluit that would tragically affect the lives of many family and community members.

Eight hunters would end up dying in the icy waters of Frobisher Bay, leaving only two young survivors. Now 25 years later, 53-yearold survivor Pitseolak Alainga is sharing a detailed account of this dark tragedy.

At the age of 12, Alainga began hunting with his father Simonie Alainga, a prominent hunter in the Iqaluit area. He learned many skills while helping to provide food for their community.

From his father, Alainga would also learn survival skills. This knowledge would one day end up saving his life.

relatives embarked by boat and headed onto Frobisher Bay to hunt walrus.

They reached their first outpost camp on Oct. 18 and settled in for the night. Early the next morning at around 4 a.m. the group travelled toward a second outpost camp. They remained there and visited some relatives for a few days until Oct. 25.

As they continued on their journey, the hunters encountered strong winds and had to return to the outpost camp. They tried again the following day and successfully anchored their boat closer to a walrus colony.

With harpoons and rifles ready, four older men and six young men went out to catch walrus. They hunted late into the evening until they caught and butchered 13 walruses.

The joy of the hunt however, would not last long. A crisis was looming on the horizon.

Simonie Alainga perished Oct. 29, 1994 after the boat he was travelling in took on water in high seas.

Seven of his other relatives also died. His son, Pitseolak Alainga, who was 28 at the time, survived the tragedy, along with Billy Kownirk.

Four days in the water Walrus, from page 2

The next day, the hunters woke up to heavy winds and radio warnings informing them that the tail-end of a hurricane was going to hit Baffin Island. They decided to immediately head back but on the night of Oct. 29, their keel broke in heavy seas and the boat started taking on water.

"We had an electric hand pump to pump out the water but the water was flowing faster than we were pumping," explains Alainga.

Eventually the water reached the engine and "killed" it.

A distress signal was sent out by radio.

The communities of Kimmirut and Pangnirtung heard the call.

With the boat now starting to sink, all 10 men boarded an 18-foot canoe they had brought with them. They made it through two big waves but the canoe did not survive the third. The smaller boat capsized and everyone went overboard.

Eight of the men drifted away into the dark waters except for Pitseolak Alainga and Billy Kownirk.

"In just a matter of few minutes, the eight men perished," recalls Alainga.

"It was approximately 11:30 at night. I remember because I had my watch on and it had a little light button so I could see what time it was."

Alainga was wearing winter clothing, ski pants and boots. He thought he was going to sink but knew he could swim.

"So, I was about three feet underwater and then I said to my mind, 'it's not time for me to go, I could swim.' So, I got my head out of the water and started breathing."

Swim for survival Despite swallowing some saltwater mixed with diesel, he swam the approximately 15 to 20 feet to the big boat. It was three-quarters sunk, remembers Alainga.

Kownirk, who had been wearing a "floater suit," had made his way to the wreckage before Alainga. Once on board, the two men shouted out for the other hunters but to no avail.

Both survivors remained on the boat for four days and three nights while it snowed.

"We were wet all that time. If we had to go to the washroom we peed in our pants. We had no drinking water," says Alainga.

For a drink, they scraped off the snow that had accumulated on the boat and let it melt.

Alainga explained that his father always told him never to chew the snow or swallow it right away. It was important to let it become warm water before swallowing it.

"Every night we couldn't sleep. Altogether for the three nights and four days we slept 15 minutes."

Each night both of them would see a little girl in a milk crate if they fell asleep.

"The little girl would say, 'Come here where it's good and dry.' But every time that little girl was getting closer, we were getting closer to the water, almost falling in."

The young men turned to prayer and tried to maintain a positive attitude.

"I kept telling my buddy not to fall asleep.

I told him to pray with me and just sit beside me and we'll get through this," says Alainga.

The following day, on Oct. 30, they could see planes searching for them and even hear a search boat from Iqaluit.

Rescue at last On the second to last day before their rescue, Alainga even recalls seeing a boat about 10 kilometres away.

"My feeling was we're gonna get rescued."

His feeling turned to reality, when on Nov. 1, a Hercules search and rescue aircraft spotted them.

When Alainga noticed the plane in the sky, he quickly found a piece of glass from the wreckage. As soon as there was an opening in the clouds and the sun was shining on the boat, he pointed the glass skyward to make it flash. This attracted the pilot's attention and the plane began circling around them.

A life raft was dropped for the men. They were rescued from the life raft and loaded onto another boat. Within a few hours they were at an outpost camp, where they boarded a helicopter for Iqaluit.

"Before we got transferred to the helicopter all those nights me and my buddy couldn't cry. We prayed to God. We tried crying. We

couldn't cry. I lost my dad, three uncles and four cousins."

Upon seeing the location of their submerged boat from the helicopter, the survivors were finally able to cry Today, Alainga's eyes become teary as he remembers the moment he was reunited with his wife and two sons at hospital 25 years ago.

Over the years, it has been Alainga's wife and siblings that have helped him cope with the aftermath of the tragedy. When he occasionally struggles with the thought of losing his father and relatives, his family is always there for him.

"Every time I tell the story, the burden that I'm carrying becomes lighter and lighter.

If I had not talked about it, I probably won't be here today."

With time, Alainga has come to terms with what happened.

"It was a tragedy that happened but I have to move on. We can't go backwards and bring them back to life. No, we can't do that. We have to move forward. One step at a time."

Today, Alainga is a traditional Inuktitut instructor. He teaches students about the land and boat safety. He continues to pass along the knowledge that was once taught to him by his beloved father.

Despite the tragic disaster, he continues to go hunting for walrus.

"Thinking about that accident will never stop me from going hunting," smiles Alainga.

The eight hunters who perished on Oct. 29, 1994 were Simonie Alainga, Johnny Shoo, Sammujualie Kootoo, Jopie Panipak, Epeebee Peterloosie, lola Nooshoota, Ooletoa Pishukte and Kellypiak Pishukte.

Nunavut News was unable to reach the other survivor, Billy Kownirk.

Grandparents survive terrifying plunge into icy waters near Cambridge Bay

A grandmother and grandfather are recovering after falling through the ice when their snowmobile and qamutiq hurtled into a river near Cambridge Bay on Saturday.

Annie Egotik is being flown to Edmonton for health tests, her husband Adam tells Nunavut News.

She was initially medevaced to Yellowknife for treatment.

The Egotiks were near the rear of a family convoy of snowmobiles and qamutiqs heading back to Cambridge Bay on Saturday. It was evening and dark. The temperature was around -14 C. Adam and Annie veered slightly off the trail of the snowmobiles ahead of them and their machine broke through the ice.

"The grandmother was in the qamutiq and trying to stay out of the water," said Cambridge Bay fire chief Keith Morrison, who was among the responders to the subsequent call for help. "The grandfather was standing on the snowmobile.

"The water wasn't that deep but because of the ice, you couldn't walk through the water," he continued. "It wasn't thick enough (ice) to really

support weight."

Annie Egotik compared the ordeal to a "bad dream" in a Facebook post. She said she and Adam tried not to panic.

"I went underwater a few times ... we kept talking to each other but slowly started to get stiff," she wrote, noting that it was emotionally wrenching to hear worried family members shouting and crying nearby.

A couple of family members attempted to rescue them while others raced off to summon help.

"We didn't know how long (we were) waiting. The water seems to be getting hot. My husband said he took his mitts off and wanted to take his parka off. I told him don't take it off," Annie wrote.

"Our family shouting at us, 'Help is coming soon.' So happy heart when you hear people are coming. They wanted us to catch the rope. I guess we couldn't make it ourselves. Our son Adam Jr. jumped in, pulling me out. After that I was in shock.

My husband said our grandson helped pulled him out of water."

Annie was still shaken up days later.

"I crying thinking about it like a dream, but it's real. I just want it to go away. I know it will take

time to heal – just thankful we still have each other with our family," she wrote.

Adam remains grateful to everyone involved in the rescue.

"We thank all people that helped us out – a special thank you to our son Adam Jr. He went in cold icy water to help his mom and to our grandson Anthony to help me out," Adam wrote. "To our community that pulled together and all the people that are praying for us, thank you everyone."

Morrison said about a dozen people – including members of the local search and rescue team, hamlet staff and firefighters – rushed to the scene. Rescuers used ropes and a boat to help bring the Egotiks to shore safely, according to the fire chief.

The time from the rescue call – around 7 p.m. – until the grandparents were brought into the Cambridge Bay health centre was around an hour and twenty minutes, Morrison said.

Thin ice remains a concern in the Kitikmeot.

"This year actually it's been warmer than usual so the ice is a bit thinner," said Morrison.

"There's still open water in the strait ... at the mouth of the bay."

Nunavut children's personal information stolen from Winnipeg hospital

Some Nunavummiut who are registered as patients at the Winnipeg Children's Hospital are among 54 people whose health records were stolen last week.

The specific number of Nunavummiut affected won't be revealed publicly due to privacy concerns, stated a spokesperson with Manitoba's Shared Health, a provincial health care organization.

The information, which was kept in a

locked file cabinet, was taken during a breakin at the hospital between Oct. 22 and 23, sometime in the night or early morning hours, according to a news release from Shared Health. The stolen records relate to two days' worth of scheduled surgical procedures.

Patient information contained in the stolen records could include the following: • Patient name and medical record number • Health identification numbers • Date of birth • Patients' phone number and address

•

Contact person's name, phone number, address and relationship • Diagnosis and type of procedure • Name of surgeon • Allergies Shared Health stated that anyone affected by this breach of privacy will receive a letter from Shared Health's chief privacy officer.

"At this point, there is no indication that patients need to take any further action to guard their personal health information as a result of this breach," Shared Health's news release reads.

Ronan Segrave, chief operating officer of the Health Sciences Centre, added, "We want to assure our patients and their families that we are taking every measure to ensure this type of incident does not happen again in the future. We can provide families with our assurance that we have no evidence to indicate this was a targeted event and offer our sincere apologies for the concern this information is sure to cause."

Winnipeg Police Service is investigating the incident.

On Oct. 28, 2019 municipal elections were held throughout Nunavut.

Nunavut News reached out some of the mayors to learn about their priorities.

Kenny Bell was elected as the new mayor for Iqaluit. Bell, who has lived in Iqaluit since the age of six, was a member of city council from 2012 to 2015. One of his first priorities as mayor ᑲᓂ ᐱᐅᓪ, ᒪᐃᔭᑖᕆᔭᐅᓵᖅᑐᖅ ᐃᖃᓗᖕᓄᑦ ᐸᕐᓇᒃᐳᖅ ᒪᓕᑦᑎᐊᕐᓂᖓᓂ ᐱᓕᕆᑦᑎᐊᕐᓂᐅᔪᒥ ᑐᙵᓇᖅᑐᒥ ᑲᑎᒪᔾᔪᑎᒃᓴᒥ.

Kenny Bell, the new mayor of Iqaluit plans on following a business friendly agenda.

is to ensure city staff feel appreciated.

"I plan on making a pretty big splash," he said. "I want to make sure that they realize that they're appreciated."

Bell is also aiming to support and celebrate businesses in the community. He wants to be very transparent with them so they can understand how all the policies, procedures and bylaws work.

"I plan on being very business friendly," he said.

The mayor plans on working with community leaders, city employees and council to make sure that everyone can thrive together.

Meeka Kiguktak, the newly elected mayor of Grise Fiord, has a full agenda of priorities for her small community. Her first priority is to deal with the transportation situation. She wants to bring down the cost of flights for residents.

According to Kiguktak, most flights in and out of her community stop in Pond Inlet. As a consequence, the number of seats available for residents of Grise Fiord are limited. To remedy this, she hopes to establish direct flights from Grise Fiord to Ottawa.

Kiguktak's second major

concern is to provide more daycare services within the community. There are many parents who cannot work because they do not have a babysitter, she said.

The third major concern for Grise Fiord is climate change. It is greatly affecting the community, said Kiguktak.

Due to warmer temperatures, the ice is not freezing as early as in past years. This makes it very difficult for the residents to hunt seal and polar bear. This is a community that relies heavily on these animals for food, she said.

About 75 per cent of the voters, elected Harry Alookie as the mayor for Qikiqtarjuaq. With three years of working experience in the community's hamlet, Alookie has a long list of issues he wants to tackle. The housing crisis, economic development, municipal infrastructures, judicial system, education, elders and youth involvement are all on his list.

More specifically, Alookie wants to build a new municipal garage. According to Alookie, its location is not ideal since it is located in the middle of the community.

Harry Alookie, the mayor of Qikiqtarjuaq has a long list of issues for his community. development the new mayor wants to build a fish plant with a cold storage unit as his community boasts a fleet of three fishing boats.

He also wants to involve the elders and youth more in the community. Although he did not mention specific plans, he did state, "Our youth is our future and we ought to bring opportunities for their future endeavours."

David Audlatak Nivingalok won the mayoral race in Kugluktuk by a single vote over Darren Ihumatak, his half-brother. Nivingalok says he's determined to get a long-term care centre established in Kugluktuk, an initiative started under the previous mayor, his cousin Ryan Nivingalok.

David Audlatak Nivingalok won a razor-close decision over Darren Ihumatak on Oct. 28. Nivingalok garnered 161 votes to 160 for Ihumatak.

"It's incredible how close the race was," Nivingalok said.

He and Ihumatak not only shared the ambition of becoming mayor, they also share they same father.

In addition, Nivingalok is related to the man whose job he's taking: outgoing mayor Ryan Nivingalok is his cousin. They were raised together like brothers by their mothers' parents, David said. David and Ryan are both housing maintainers with the Kugluktuk Housing Authority. Ryan chose not to seek a third term in office, stating that he had to concentrate on his family and his health.

David resolved to step in and carry on with some of the initiatives that his brother Ryan and the previous council began, namely trying to establish a long-term care centre for Kugluktuk.

"It's really sad and it's hard to see that our elders always have to leave home to be taken care of. It's 2019 and that shouldn't have to happen anymore," David said.

While David was concluding his successful quest for the mayorship, thousands of kilometres away in Iqaluit, Health

Minister George Hickes was informing his colleagues in the legislative assembly that Kugluktuk's proposal for a long-term care facility – based on a fee-for-service arrangement with the GN – is still being examined.

Jobs also a priority David said he would also like the hamlet to become a greater source of training and employment opportunities for local youth who complete high school.

There are plenty of jobs available through TMAC Resources' Hope Bay project, 125 kilmetres southwest of Cambridge Bay, but some young people are encountering a barrier to finding work there, he said.

"Everybody's testing positive for marijuana in their system and can't land those jobs," he said. "We have to find new ideas and pathways for these (youth) to be successful and acquire these jobs and lead a good life afterward."

David served as a hamlet councillor several years ago.

He was a vice-president with the Kitikmeot Inuit Association up until last year. He also sat as chair of the Kugluktuk Hunters and Trappers Organization in the past.

There's quite a few newlyelected members of the new hamlet council, but David said many of the newcomers possess at least board experience from other organizations.

"We'll be able to make strong and good, sound decision for the community, for the people," he predicted.

No money to help build new hunters and trappers buildings

Quassa pressures Savikataaq to make Inuit language dominant in government

The aging and deteriorating condition of hunters and trappers buildings are a source of "ongoing frustration," Hudson Bay MLA Allan Rumbolt said in the legislative assembly on Wednesday.

The Department of the ᐋᓕᓐ ᕋᒻᐴᓪᑦ Environment's 2019-20 main ᖃᐅᔨᔪᒪᕗᖅ ᖃᓄᒃᑲᓐᓂᖅ estimates include $223,000 in operations funding for the ᓄᓇᕗᒻᒥ ᒐᕙᒪᒃᑯᑦ three wildlife organizations: the ᐱᓕᕆᔪᓐᓇᕐᓂᖓᓂ Qikiqtaaluk Wildlife Board, the ᐃᑲᔪᖅᓱᐃᓂᕐᒧᑦ Kivalliq Wildlife Board and the ᓄᓇᕗᒻᒥ ᐊᖑᓇᓱᒃᑎᓂ Kitikmeot Wildlife Board. ᐊᒻᒪ ᒥᑭᒋᐊᕐᓂᐊᖅᑎᓂᑦ Rumbolt wanted to know ᓇᑉᐸᖅᑎᕆᓂᖏᓐᓄᑦ what more the GN can do to aid ᓄᑖᓂᒃ ᑎᑎᕋᕐᕕᓂᑦ.

Nunavut's hunters and trappers in constructing new offices as well as install radio repeaters to improve communications and enhance safety.

He noted that a new HTO office in Cambridge Bay soon to open, but that funding came through the Nunavut Inuit Wildlife Secretariat.

Environment Minister Joe Savikataaq acknowledged that the GN doesn't have any designated capital funding for HTO buildings.

ALLAN RUMBOLT: "We are struggling ourselves wants to know what more just to replace our own office the GN can do to aid needs, so we just don't have any Nunavut's hunters and extra money for infrastructure," trappers in constructing said Savikataaq. On a day when Culture and Heritage Minister David Joanasie cited statistics about a growing number of Inuit language speakers in Nunavut and 82 per cent of Inuit being bilingual, Aggu MLA Paul Quassa took aim at Premier Joe Savikataaq, urging him to make Inuktut the working language of government.

"Does the premier remember why we got Nunavut or was he just newborn when Nunavut was created?" Quassa said Wednesday. "The government was supposed to run in Inuktitut and people are still expecting it ᐹᓪ ᖁᐊᓴ: "ᐊᕐᕌᒍᑦ 20− today but still nothing." ᖑᖅᓯᒪᓕᖅᐳᖅ ᑕᐃᒪᙵᓂ Quassa said Greenland proᓴᖅᑭᑎᑕᐅᓂᖓᓂ ᓄᓇᕗᑦᑎᓐᓂ vides a good example to follow. ᐊᒻᒪ ᓱᓕ ᑕᑯᕙᒃᐳᒍᑦ ᒐᕙᒪᒃᑯᑦ "When I go to a store in ᐃᓕᒃᑯᐊᖓᓂ ᐊᑐᐃᓐᓇᖅᐳᑦ Greenland, they use their lanᖃᓪᓗᓈᑎᑐᑦ ᐱᓕᕆᓂᐅᔪᒧᑦ guage. Can he learn from these other jurisdictions so that within Nunavut our government headquarters can run in Inuktitut?"

Savikataaq said Nunavut is unique. He noted that the GN has made money available to train bureaucrats in Inuktitut – although Quassa argued that the government must compel non-Inuktut speakers to provide service in the Inuit language, PAUL QUASSA: "It's been not make it voluntary.

MLAs chastise minister over lack of funds for community learning centres

Absence of cannabis outlets in Nunavut 'unacceptable,' Arreak-Lightstone asserts

Repairs and replacements for community learning centres need to be a higher priority, said several MLAs to Patterk Netser, minister responsible for Nunavut Arctic College, on Monday.

Netser presented the college's $10.6 million proposed 2020-21 capital budget for approval in the legislative assembly.

The largest single allotment – $8.5 million – will go toward ongoing construction of the new Kitikmeot campus building in Cambridge Bay. While some MLAs lauded that initiative, they urged the minister to fix eight community learning centres in various communities, some very old, some overcrowded.

Aggu MLA Paul Quassa pointed out that the regular MLAs made that concern clear during last year's budget cycle.

Netser replied that he only took over the Nunavut Arctic College portfolio in June.

"I informed the staff that we would look into the local facilities and our priority should be replacement facilities," Netser said, adding that Grise Fiord and Whale Cove have new buildings.

"When the government is making capital estimates, there's usually quite a large request being made to our department and we can't satisfy everybody."

Quassa, who said some facilities are in such poor condition that safety could be an issue, insisted the minister and his staff should quickly finish visiting the learning centres in every community to assess the structures.

"I want you to work a little bit more diligently," he told Netser.

More than a year after cannabis was legalized in Canada, Nunavut still has no retail outlets within the territory and that's 'unacceptable,' Iqaluit-Manirajak MLA Adam Lightstone said in the legislative assembly Tuesday.

"Right now, Nunavut is reliant on the black market to supply cannabis sales in the territory. With the amount of cannabis consumption in the territory and the fact that all that money is being funnelled out, siphoned out by the black market, I find that unacceptable," Arreak-Lightstone said.

"I believe that every other jurisdiction has been able to figure this out but us. I believe it is time that our government starts putting merit to its words. I believe it's time for the government to stand up and get some work done on this front and start producing regulations that will allow the private market or the public sector to step up and open up some alternative options including over-the-counter sales."

Finance Minister George Hickes, who oversees the alcohol and cannabis sales file, acknowledged that GN's share of revenue from legal online cannabis purchases have been low – just $12,000 between the end of March and now.

That's despite the GN lowering its markup on dried cannabis to $1 per gram from $4 per gram in July.

Hickes warned that "there are unsafe materials being put in illicit black market cannabis," which is why Nunavummiut should choose legal options.

However, the minister still wouldn't provide a timeline of

when cannabis retail outlets will be a reality in the territory.

"I would love to get this done tomorrow, but I also want to make sure it's done properly," said Hickes. "My entire goal and I know the staff's goal in these regulations, is to make sure it's done right. So, we don't have to keep going back and forth (or put) unforeseen challenges in front of our potential retailers or licensees."

North Baffin deserves its own longterm care centre, Qamaniq contends

As the debate rages over the GN's plans to build three new long-term care centres in the coming years, Tununiq MLA David Qamaniq raised another point for consideration Wednesday: residents in North Baffin communities should have their own facility.

"If plans were developed for both the North and South Baffin, then this would allow more care equitably, especially if you look at the per capita numbers," Qamaniq said.

The GN's current plan is to build a 108-bed long-term care centre in Iqaluit, a 24-bed facility in Rankin Inlet and another 24-bed facility in the Kitikmeot.

Health Minister George Hickes, having already faced many questions and critiques from regular MLAs relating to long-term care over the past week, was succinct in his responses to Qamaniq, with no hint of accommodating his request.

"We currently do have one in North Baffin in Igloolik and we are looking at supplementing that with a facility here in Iqaluit in the south," said Hickes.

Keep Inuit children in Nunavut Northern News Services

Canada has a history of childsnatching.

For decades, kablunaat forcibly separated Indigenous children from their families, putting them up for adoption by non-Indigenous families or placing them in foster homes.

It was known as the Sixties Scoop and an estimated 20,000 Indigenous children were taken from their homes due to a series of disastrous policies that were in effect from the 1950s to the 1980s.

These children were carried off, separated from their loved ones and transported to alien environments where – it was thought – they'd be better able to learn modern ways and values.

They lost their families, languages and identities and some were left hollow shells due to the tragic loss of everything they knew.

It has been labelled a cultural genocide, it was a trauma that will echo through the generations and it remains one of the most heinous crimes committed by our government in the history of this nation.

That's why it was troubling to hear that a Nunavut couple's efforts to adopt a child have been frustrated, even while Inuit children have been sent out of the territory.

During that time, 69 Nunavummiut children were removed from the territory to live with adoptive parents while 32 were adopted within the territory.

According to Family Services, 97 per cent of the adopted children were Inuit and 97 per cent of them who were moved out of Nunavut are now living with non-Inuit families.

That this scenario is still occurring despite all the hand-wringing in recent years is truly tragic. When it comes to the delicate task of finding adoptive parents for some of our most vulnerable children, placing them with non-Indigenous families outside the territory should be the option of last resort.

It seems that this non-Inuit couple has been unfairly passed over, even after undergoing all the requisite steps. They allowed a social services worker to inspect their home. They are already parents to their own children. They did not impose any restrictions on the adopted child's age or gender and they were fully

prepared to ensure their adopted child would be exposed to Inuit culture, tradition and language.

Despite this, the Government of Nunavut ignored them for years, even as Inuit children were being sent out of the territory.

Joanne Henderson, regional director with Family Services, told Nunavut News that there are cases where non-Inuit families outside Nunavut are given priority. Sometimes children are sent to particular homes to join their previously adopted siblings. In other cases the birth parents make personal connections with individuals whom they think will make good guardians for their children.

But this does not explain why this Nunavut couple has been ignored for so long.

To remedy this situation, the government should heed Pat Angnakak, MLA for Iqaluit-Niaqunnguu, who noted that the Department of Family Services has yet to fulfill its promise to review the Aboriginal Custom Adoption Recognition Act. The process of adopting can be a long, complicated and emotional ride, filled with legal roadblocks.

Making the process as fair and painless as possible for both parents and children, while recognizing the need to preserve an adopted child's connection to its culture and homeland should be the number one priority.

Hopeful new season Northern News Services

As we begin a new season it is hoped that health and well-being will be at their best.

Elections have happened and we also hope that those in positions of authority and leadership will attain a deeper awareness and vision.

As a society we have a general sense of direction but we need strong inclusive guidance to accomplish the best for the people. This takes thought and cooperation.

Any relationship that aspires to grow and mature needs effort and engagement. The effort is when each individual considers what was said and applies goodwill and the willingness to listen more closely. The engagement is where each individual is allowed to express themselves without fear and to know they have been acknowledged and accepted in good faith.

There are times when this simply cannot be done with comfort and ease. Some of the housing units in town are the original dwellings of our growing and expanding community of Cambridge Bay. They are small and showing their age.

During the Cold War era, Cambridge Bay had a tower built in 1957 or 1958 that stood 639 feet above sea level and was used as a navigational device for the aircraft that were flying to Alert and Eureka, which were two major military camps that monitored the high Arctic and beyond. When our airport came under a different authority, several engineers came up to inspect this tower and determined they had to demolish it for public safety reasons. If our leadership would stop and consider the absolute health and well-being of our people, they would look at the condition of our current housing units and have the technical team inspect each public house for stability and safety. There are standards in place for the amount of people permitted to occupy a unit. A single young man or woman is given a bachelor's apartment while a young couple can enjoy a one-bedroom apartment or house. We are governed by a national tenancy agreement within the federal government that issues these regulations.

In my view, our planners and administrators are not paying close attention to the situation.

Our law enforcement personnel are pushed to their limits as they respond to calls for help, our family services division continues to seek safe homes for children in jeopardy.

Our health and well-being is not a commodity that can be allowed to fluctuate with whims of our politicians and leaders. Our health and well-being is what drives us forward with stability and growth.

From Oct. 21 to 25, it was education week at Joamie Elementary School in Iqaluit.

As a treat, the students decided to make tea buns for their teachers.

In less than 45 minutes,

Name-change plebiscite on hold

Ikaluktutiak/Cambridge Bay A planned community name change plebiscite to be held in conjunction with the municipal election on Oct. 28 was withdrawn.

Based on input from residents, including elders, during community planning meetings, the Hamlet of Cambridge Bay was prepared to allow residents to vote on switching the community's name to Iqaluktuuttiaq, a traditional Inuit name meaning, "place of many fish."

However, there was some disagreement from other residents who insisted that Ikaluktutiak is the proper spelling.

Mayor Pamela Gross, who was re-elected last week, said it was decided that broader consultations should be held on spelling and pronunciation.

"That's one of the key areas, to have more discussion of what's changing in terms of government standardization (of language)," said Gross.

Asked for her personal preference on the name-change issue, Gross said it would be "evolving with our culture to better suit the needs of the longevity of our language."

Cambridge Bay is named in honour of Prince Adolphus, Duke of Cambridge. Adolphus (February 24, 1774 – July 8, 1850) was the seventh son of England's King George III. Other Nunavut communities have reverted to Inuit names over the years such as Naujaat (formerly Repulse Bay), Qikiqtarjuaq (formerly Broughton Island) and Kugaaruk (formerly Pelly Bay).

Planning for first-responder training

Iglulik Now that Iglulik has an ambulance – donated by the Region of Peel in Ontario and delivered during sealift – there's a desire to train a couple of community members as first responders, said Greg Morash, the hamlet's senior administrative officer.

The training would entail how to properly transport an injured patient and how to administer needles, among other skills. A couple of individuals who have a background in first

aid and possess necessary licences have already been identified, said Morash.

"So they'll have a little more ability than just picking up a patient and driving (the ambulance)," Morash said, adding that the basic first-responders' course takes seven to 10 days.

He's hoping that Clyde River and Taloyoak, which also inherited ambulances recently, will join in the training. It's still to be determined whether the instruction will be arranged in Nunavut or in Ottawa, Morash said.

Fiddle workshops for youth

Mittimatalik/Pond Inlet Saskatoon fiddler Kim de Laforest and Nova Scotia musician Greg Simm, spent Sept. 29 to Oct. 30 visiting four communities in the Qikiqtaaluk region. They facilitated fiddle workshops in Hall Beach, Pond Inlet, Pangnirtung and Qikiqtarjuaq.

“The workshops are not only fun for students, learning music is therapeutic and provides a positive, creative outlet for many of our students, which also supports mental health and well-being,” said Julie Lohnes, a former teacher.

Through these workshops, Lohnes wants students to feel a sense of pride and accomplishment that comes with learning to play an instrument. A feeling she hopes that students will carry into other aspects of their lives.

For the past 11 years, the workshops, called Music for the Future, have been organized by the Tusarnaarniq Sivumut Association.

Taking witches home

Ikaluktutiak/Cambridge Bay Close to a dozen youth got into the spirit of Halloween during an after-school craft session at the May Hakongak Community Library on Oct. 23.

The youths made some spooky witches out of paper, said assistant librarian Peter Evetalegak. Some of the youngsters took their handiwork home while others allowed their frighteningly decorative art to be displayed at the library.

Another year, another crop of folks in sports and recreation get their just due.

The Recreation and Sports Awards Gala was held in Iqaluit Oct. 26.

Martin Joy, who won Coach of the Year as head coach of the inaugural Canada Winter Games boys hockey team this past February in Red Deer, Alta, said he was surprised to be singled out.

That it came courtesy of his work with the Canada Winter Games made it that much sweeter.

"That was a whole different level of hockey," he said. "We created a good plan, we stuck to it and we were a resilient group. You look back at the journey we all had and the commitment we all made and it's just such a great award and I'm very fortunate to have won it."

Joy has previously served as the bantam boys hockey coach at the 2018 Arctic Winter Games and will be the bench boss for the midget boys next

year in Whitehorse.

Speaking of the Canada Winter Games boys team, they, too, were recognized as the Team of the Year for what they did in Red Deer.

Joy said being that it was the first time the territory had entered a team, it couldn't have gone any better than it did, especially defeating Newfoundland and Labrador.

"We accomplished what we set out to do," he said. "We held ourselves well but we just lacked the experience. It's created that impact now where you have the next generation that can't wait to get the chance to put on that uniform and get their turn. They're seeing players from their communities getting on the ice at a high level and that's how you inspire others. You never underestimate where you come from."

One thing which came from the experience in Red Deer is a best practices handbook for future coaches, something Joy said will be a road map of sorts for those will take over.

The other sporting awards included Maxwell Joy, who was named Male Athlete of the Year for hockey, while Shawna Kyak won Female Athlete of the Year for her exploits in soccer, badminton and volleyball. She's featured on Team Nunavut rosters many times over the years, most recently with the girls volleyball team at the Western Canada Summer Games this past August.

The Official of the Year went to Ian MacDonald of Iqaluit for soccer.

The Recreation and Parks Association of Nunavut also handed out its annual awards on the evening.

Kim Masson of Iqaluit was named the winner of the Canadian Parks and Recreation Association Award of Merit, which goes to someone who has influenced the parks and recreation sector in a local or regional capacity.

Nunavut hits the ice Saguenay, Que. The 2020 Canadian Mixed Curling Championship gets going today in Saguenay, Que. and Nunavut will have skin in the game.

The Iqaluit Curling Club will represent the territory with Wade Kingdon, Alison Griffin, Dennis Masson and Megan Ingram flying the flag. They get going with pool play this afternoon, Nov. 4, with two games against Saskatchewan and Ontario

A true territorial championship Iqaluit Inuksuk High School's gymnasium will be full later this month – literally.

The Nunavut Badminton Championships are set to hit the capital beginning on Nov. 8 with half of the territory's communities sending players of some sort: Iqaluit, Taloyoak, Grise Fiord, Baker Lake, Arviat, Pond Inlet, Qikiqtarjuaq, Iglulik, Naujaat, Rankin Inlet, Whale Cove, Sanikiluaq and Pangnirtung.

There will be three divisions in play – juvenile, junior and open – with male and female singles, male and female doubles and mixed doubles in all three.

Tryouts on the horizon Iqaluit Hockey Nunavut is beginning the march to the 2020 Arctic Winter Games in Whitehorse.

The tryouts for the midget boys and junior girls teams will be happening at the Arctic Winter Games Arena in Iqaluit from Nov. 8 to 10 with the teams being selected shortly after the tryouts end.

Mike McPherson, president of Hockey Nunavut, said there will be an estimated 35 players for each of the tryouts.

The bantam boys tryouts were also supposed to be held on the same weekend in Rankin Inlet but McPherson said those have been pushed back to the end of November due to the ongoing issues with the new arena in the community.

The new dates are scheduled for Nov. 29 to Dec. 1.

Taking the next kick Sixth level black belt works with Arviat taekwondo students

Students in a new taekwondo club began learning from a sixth-degree black belt in Arviat recently.

Taekwondo is the Korean art of self-defense.

Jim Ripley of Amherst, N.S., was brought to Arviat

by Don Peters, who started the taekwondo club with his spouse, Joanne, this past February.

Peters said the Arviat club has been funded through the Government of Nunavut's Sport and Recreation Division to hold a number of workshops to help develop the local club.

He said he was very fortunate Ripley's schedule allowed him to visit Arviat conduct the workshops, "We conducted workshops on taekwondo introduction in the elementary, middle and high schools this past week," said Peters.

"In addition to that, Mr. Ripley has brought his exper-

tise in to work with our students who are all at, or about, the while belt or yellow belt level.

"We have 27 students in these gradings, so we're quite excited about that."

Ripley said there are 10 different levels of colour belts in taekwondo starting with the white belt and going all the way up to black stripe, which is the last step before becoming a full black belt.

He said among the Arviat students, some will be tested to move from white belt to yellow stripe, from yellow stripe to yellow belt, from yellow belt to green stripe and from green stripe into their green belt.

"We put them through setrequirement testing," said Ripley.

"They must perform selfdefense, proper techniques of kicking and what we call three-step sparring based on the specific patterns of each belt level."

He said over the years, the sport side of taekwondo has been developed and participants now compete in the ring with sparring.

"If you've seen the Olympics, that is the World Taekwondo Federation style of sparring which is mainly just kicking," he said.

"In the International Taekwondo Federation system, we use hand-and-foot techniques.

If you make a punch and score on a specific point of the body, you get one point. If you make a kick between the waist and shoulders you earn two points and if you can score one on the helmet you score three points.

"At the end of the match, the one with the most points is the winner."

The Arviat club has grown to more than 40 youth members since having seven its first night and has since been opened-up to the entire community.

The club now boasts family members and senior members,

with its youngest member being five years old.

Ripley said he sees great things for the club moving forward. He said the Arviat students are dedicated, eager to work and quick to learn.

"It's amazing to see how far they've come in such a short period of time, especially when they don't practice with the club over the summer.

"If I can share my passion for taekwondo with someone to help give them better insight and understanding into what we actually do, I'm fulfilling my part in honouring our founder, Gen. Choi (Hong Hi), who passed away back in 2002 and helping to spread taekwondo throughout the world."

Ripley said one of the golden rules with his students is that he does not allow street fighting of any kind and he has expelled two of his taekwondo students for breaking that rule.

"If you just show-off to your friends and they go out and try it, they could actually hurt someone quite badly," he said. "So, if someone breaks my golden rules, my doors are closed to that person.

"From day one, taekwon-

do is strictly self defense; defending yourself, your family members, or someone desperately in need of assistance because they are unable to protect themselves."

Ripley, 65, started with taekwondo 35 years ago and said he plans to keep on practicing it until his body won't allow it anymore.

Stephen Strasburg was a big reason the Washington Nationals won the World Series as he became the first pitcher in Major League Baseball history to win five games in the post-season. these days and its latest stunt didn't do anything to repair the reputation.

The BDO has hosted the World Masters tournament since 1974 and it's the oldest major tournament still in operation. This year's edition was held in Purfleet, England featuring players from around the world that qualified to be there. Including those who didn't even exist.

It all began with all qualified players being forced to pay an entry fee to play. What tournament on the planet forces its participants to pay an entry fee for what they've qualified for?

Ridiculous. Some of the international players didn't pay the fee (because they weren't told they had to) and weren't in the original draw.

Because of that, Des Jacklin, the BDO's chairman, announced there would be a redraw of the players.

Jacklin took the blame. Alright, fine. Mistakes are going to happen but then the fake name business came in. The apparent reason why is because they could be replaced with

real players if too many showed up. Anyway, the redraw occurred, which caused more confusion because no one knew what board they were playing on and there were no scorers at each board either, causing more confusion.

And imagine Keith Way of Yellowknife had the chance to play in this dosh but turned it down. He went to Romania instead for the World Cup, where at least organizers there had a clue.

It finally got sorted out and the tournament actually happened with a real winner in the end – John O'Shea of Ireland – but the BDO has been mercilessly mocked and harangued because of this. Can't wait to see what its version of the world championship will look like.

The Professional Darts Corporation, where anyone who has any sort of skill plays, will be dishing out more than $4 million in December.

Welcome to Cambridge Bay, Nunavut.

Weather has been so mild and much warmer than usual. The ocean has not completely froze over yet, so be careful not to travel on ice yet if you're going out hunting and fishing. It seems that the fall weather is here to stay a bit longer The nuna and ice is so beautiful in fresh white snow all over. Very nice to take photographs, makes a beautiful memory to remember.

Congratulations to all the candidates who were elected to council and our various boards.

We look forward to the successful work you will do to serve our wonderful and growing community of Cambridge Bay! The Inuit Qaujimajatuqangit Conference was held in Iqaluit on Oct. 29 and 30.

Approximately 100 delegates gathered together to listen to Our Elders speak of Inuit ways that were practiced by our Ancestors before western lifestyles were introduced to the Inuit. Before Christianity arrived, shamanism was active. This was the Inuit way of dealing with many issues including childbirth, the naming of babies, adoptions, arranged mar-

riages, hunting and so many traditional laws that were unwritten but powerful.

It was most hurtful for me to hear how much pain our parents, grandparents and ancestors went through when their children were all taken away to attend residential schools, many of whom did not return home from hospitals also.

The camps were silent except for the crying of our Mothers and Grandmothers for their children who were forced from their homes.

I was one of them who survived residential school. The language is very strong when we listen to everyone speaking Inuktut, even children, it is so beautiful to hear this.

Inuinnaqtut is slowly disappearing and the need to revitalize and teach it and make every effort to make it strong again in every aspect of our lives must be done to bring back our dialect before all our Elders pass away.

It was repeated throughout the conference that I.Q. needs to be implemented into the education curriculum. Today our Elders are still so strong in every way of life, we need them, we must look after them and listen to them.

Record and document all their teachings and practices must be done immediately, no matter the cost.

Let us all unite to keep Inuit culture and traditions alive and to begin our healing journeys to have a peaceful and proud people. We have a beautiful way because of our Ancestors, quana for this. Quana to our Elders for caring for us, looking after us, teaching and talking to us, being patient with us. We love you and we will be there for you.
