Beating addiction by reclaiming Inuit culture Piita Irniq shares how he overcame his battle with the bottle

What began as a desire to "explore the idea of drinking," became a 28-year addiction with alcohol for Piita Irniq.

At the age of 21, Irniq drank alcohol for the very first time while living in Ottawa.

His curiosity for alcohol eventually turned into a coping mechanism for dealing with a dark past.

Irniq was born and lived in an iglu in Naujaarjuat for the first 11 years of his life. He grew up in the traditional Inuit way, speaking Inuktitut, living off the land, travelling by dogsled and learning how to hunt. With his parents, he went fishing for Arctic char and trout, and hunting for caribou. During his childhood, "the land" provided Irniq with a sense of "freedom" and happiness.

In 1958 however, everything changed.

Without consulting his parents, the missionaries sent him to residential school.

Between 1958 to 1963, Irniq attended Sir Joseph Bernier Federal Day School in Chesterfield Inlet. It was during this period, his "childhood was taken away" from him.

Irniq experienced sexual, mental and physical abuse.

With the abuse, young Irniq was stripped away from his Inuit culture, language and traditional beliefs.

It was in 1967, when Irniq first moved to Ottawa to seek a higher education, he began drinking alcohol.

"We would go out drinking every weekend for years that I was down here (Ottawa), and it continued on to the time when I went to Yellowknife in 1971 and the following years when I got into politics."

During his time in politics, Irniq explained it was "so easy" to go to a reception and start drinking.

"I wanted to be like white people who drank at various receptions and in bars," said Irniq.

However, hidden underneath the social aspect of alcohol, the truth was Irniq did not want to remain sober.

Irniq admitted he eventually turned to alcohol to deal with the pain and trauma of residential school.

"I started to drink alcohol to erase what happened at residential school."

"When I was drinking I forgot what happened in residential school, but when I became sober the memory of what happened came back. Over the course of many years, it came back," explained Irniq.

Quitting alcohol to reclaim culture as a sober leader After drinking for 28 years at least twice a week, Irniq found the willpower to quit drinking alcohol.

On Aug. 17, 1995 while in Toronto, Irniq made the decision.

"We just finished a leadership conference.

And here I thought I am one of those leaders, but I'm hiding behind the bottle. I'm hiding behind the booze, trying to be a leader, and at the same time drinking to get drunk."

At the time, Irniq had a major role with negotiating the Nunavut Land Claims for the Inuit people. He was also serving as a member of the Legislative Assembly.

"I got also tired of hangovers and missing important meetings when we were negotiating Nunavut Land Claims. I wanted to get away from all that."

Although the need to act as a leader for Nunavut was a motivating factor, Irniq also wanted to set an example for his children by becoming a good family leader.

"I wanted to be a sober leader."

Irniq talked about his father, Athanasi Angutiaq, with respect. He described him as a 'role model, an inspiration and a strong believer' of his Inuit culture.

He recited the story of how his father's company would always offer an ounce of whisky each day after work to his father.

Despite this, his father never fell in love with alcohol, explained Irniq.

Instead his father had said, "I didn't fall in love with it (alcohol), as long as I can have seal broth, caribou or Arctic char."

This particular statement was the biggest inspiration for Irniq to quit his addiction.

It made him think that he should consider taking back his Inuit culture, which he lost during residential school.

"I wanted to become who I have 'always' been. An Inuk, who believes strongly in my

past, in my culture, in my Inuit language, in my ancestry, who survived for many thousands of years, without ever having alcohol," said Irniq.

The determined political leader was tested during an Air Canada flight when he was offered alcohol.

"I thought to myself, if I could say 'no thank you' for the first offer on that airplane.

The rest will become easy to say, 'no thank you.'"

He mustered the strength to decline a drink and since that particular moment he has never drank again.

Today, it has been 24 years since his last alcoholic drink.

Healing through the land: 'the psychiatrist' According to Irniq, the land is very peaceful, harmonious and healing.

"I've always wanted to heal from what happened at the residential school, and I tried to spend as much time as I could on the land because the land is always healing," said Irniq.

Over the years, Irniq has visited the North to feel refreshed and rejuvenated.

Irniq even referred to the land as a "traditional psychiatrist."

"It's really good for your mind and your body when you spend as much time as you can on the land."

Irniq believes you have to be very determined to quit drinking alcohol.

"It takes a very strong person to quit drinking," he emphasized.

He encourages people to learn and connect with their Inuit culture, history, customs and traditions in order to help recover from addiction. Talking to people you trust about your addiction and seeking help is also very important, said Irniq.

"To want to quit drinking, it's nothing to be embarrassed about."

"You gain a great life if you decide to take that route and I encourage people to do that."

Irniq, who continues to live in Ottawa, said he still has no desire to drink again.

As long as he has caribou, seal, arctic char, and fresh water from the Arctic, "it's goodbye to alcohol forever," said Irniq.

Addiction-free musician serves as a role model for Nunavut youth

Daniel Monkman, a musician by trade, began drinking alcohol and taking drugs at the age of 15. He grew up in a small town close to Winnipeg called Selkirk and also lived on a Brokenhead Ojibway Nation reserve.

"It (alcohol) was like this 'magical potion' or something that helped me disassociate from issues that were going on in my household or at school."

His mom was not present much due to her busy work schedule. His father, a residential school survivor, had anger issues that were taken out on him. As a single child, Monkman spend his adolescent years surrounded by other Indigenous youth, who were also involved with alcohol and drugs.

Living in poverty and being neglected by teachers also added to his pain and anger.

"I think a lot of my issues came from not thinking I was good enough," said the Hamilton, Ont.based musician.

"I was the wrong person. Getting told 'you're dirty' all the time, you begin to think you're dirty."

Alcohol and drugs served as an escape from all this negativity.

However, his life situation had gotten out of control when he witnessed a considerable amount of

gang-related violence and his best friend died from a drug overdose. He ended up being in several 'life and death' situations that eventually led him to his 'awakening'.

He realized that he was emotionally hurting his family members with his addiction habits.

He says it was at that point he thought, "I cannot be so selfish. I'm just hurting everyone around me."

He ultimately came to an understanding that he really had to work through all of his problems and traumas.

After battling with his addictions for years, in 2014 Monkman moved to Vancouver for rehab.

The 'earth shattering moment' for Monkman was when he was told to give up all his coping mechanisms (drugs, alcohol, toxic relationships) by the rehab centre. He needed to deal with his past traumas without masking his emotions through lifethreatening addictions.

Free at last by defeating addictions After several months of rehab and a few relapses, Monkman succeeded at beating his addictions.

For the past four years, the 28-year-old musician has been addiction-free.

This year, working with organizations such as Taking it Global and Connected North, Monkman has found time to serve as a role

model for youth in Nunavut.

In April 2019, over video, Monkman talked about his addiction as well other mental health related issues to students at Paatsaali school in Sanikiluaq.

He hopes to get in a couple more sessions with the youth before the end of this year.

Monkman also wants to visit Nunavut to play his music and speak to the youth.

"I want to do a tour of the reserves and go to the different schools and talk about my story."

When it comes to addiction, he encourages Indigenous people to not be ashamed of who they are.

"A lot of my problems came from me no being able to accept who I was."

He believes it is important to hear cultural stories and to "try to remember that our culture is very cool."

"True happiness is inside our culture and preserving it within inside ourselves.

"As soon as I accepted who I was and got my culture back, true healing happened."

Monkman also emphasized the importance of asking for help.

"Humility saved my life. Asking for help saved my life.

ISC defers counselling to five communities Citing budget concerns, there is no definitive date to when these services will resume

Earlier this month mental health counsellor Mark Kelly informed the residents of five Nunavut communities that his counselling services have been deferred by Indigenous Services Canada (ISC).

According to Kelly, the Indian residential schools and Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women & Girls (MMIWG) counselling services he provides have been postponed to sometime in early 2020.

The communities of Resolute Bay, Arctic Bay, Pangnirtung, Pond Inlet and Grise Fiord have been affected by this decision.

Kelly, who is a Canadiancertified counsellor with the Canadian Counselling and Psychotherapy Association, has been providing counselling services since 2011 through an

approval process by ISC. "I am not an employee or contractor to ISC, I am designated as an approved service provider," explained Kelly.

"Which means that each of the counselling clinics I provide to Nunavut are approved or denied by Indigenous Services Canada without guarantee of any future clinics."

First time denied For Kelly, this is the first time an application to provide services to residential school survivors has ever been denied.

He had planned a counselling clinic from Nov. 11 to Dec. 4, 2019, but was unapproved due to budgetary concerns.

"These concerns were primarily due to the cost of travel to and from the communities on my caseload," he said.

The counsellor points out that ISC is obliged to provide health support services and counselling to all survivors

of residential school and their families.

"Services are available at health centres that are located in every community," stated Rola Tfaili, media relations officer for ISC. These aforementioned services include those provided by the territory-wide Quality of Life Secretariat, Ilisaqsivik Society in Clyde River, Pulaarvik Kablu Friendship Centre in Rankin Inlet, the Iqaluit Community Tukisigiarvik Society, Hamlet of Cambridge Bay and Hamlet of Kugluktuk.

"These sites all have resolution health and cultural support workers that work daily with Indian Residential

School clients and their families," stated Tfaili.

"The IRS Program will approve travel for clients to access counselling services as needed, to the nearest point of service within their region."

Individuals seeking help could also use telephone counselling services that are available through the Hope for Wellness Help Line.

Resuming counselling When Nunavut News asked about when the counselling sessions will start up again, no definite date was provided.

"Once ISC has approved the request and the provider has availability, counselling

services will resume," stated Tfaili.

ISC is seeking out more information on how to "most effectively manage services" in

the Baffin region, considering the recent flight cost increases, flight schedule changes and the travel time required by service providers.

Complex trauma is what drives some people to become addicts, says an addictions treatment expert in Iqaluit.

Repeated exposures to domestic violence, abuse and neglect would be examples of causes for many cases of addiction, according to Adrian Perez Ara. "Complex trauma commonly develops during childhood and adolescence but can also affect adults," he said, adding that underlying reasons for addiction are numerous and complicated.

The GN hasn't been tracking the overall number of Nunavummiut who seek treatment locally for addictions, but the Department of Health is working towards updating the ways it collects data and those figures should be known in the future, Perez Ara noted.

The department has a better handle on the number of Nunavummiut sent south for addictions programs since 2016/17, although not exact figures. It estimates the number at between 32 and 37 people each of those three years.

Treatment programs range between 28 days and six months and the GN covers costs associated with attending.

"If the client discloses that they are experiencing problematic substance use and would like to access intensive in-patient treatment, our staff will do its best to match them with the appropriate program for them as soon as possible," Perez Ara stated.

Continued support, or aftercare, is admittedly "currently limited" in the territory, Perez Ara acknowledged.

"Mental health staff in each community are available to support clients post-treatment, no matter how much time has passed since the client accessed the program," he said.

One-on-one counselling "This support oftentimes takes the form of the standard one-on-one counselling that is available to all community members."

Each Nunavut community has designated GN positions for mental health and addictions. __In total, there are 36 positions for mental health consultants and mental health nurses in the territory, of which only four are vacant, according to Perez Ara. There are also close to 55 new positions for paraprofessional mental health and addictions staff in the territory – essentially mental health assistants.

Of those, 12 are filled by Inuit, Perez Ara added.

When support staff are not available, the GN can arrange for remote support from Homewood Health, a mental health and addictions services company with locations across southern Canada.

As well, mental health and addictions help is available through several communities such as the Pulaarvik Kablu Friendship Centre in Rankin Inlet and the Department of Healthy Living in Cambridge Bay. While the Government of Nunavut, Nunavut Tunngavik Incorporated and the federal

government have committed to establishing a treatment centre within the territory, it's anticipated it will take five years.

Amittuq MLA Joelie Kaernerk would like to see that timeline expedited.

"I believe the Nunavut government needs to step up and make this happen quickly," he said.

"The service that they're (currently) providing is just for pretty much Iqaluit people and not for the rest of Nunavut so I'm not very satisfied."

because they don't know what support is available, they're worried about confidentiality and "most of all, the harsh stigma associated with mental health treatment and asking for help."

Some individuals need to consult counsellors many times before realizing longterm success, according to Perez Ara, but he said defining success when it comes to conquering addictions can vary from one person to the next.

"For some clients, complete abstinence might be a form of success, while for others it might be abstaining from using before or during work, or around their family," he stated.

Addictions can be found everywhere in Nunavut. They affect all walks of life, from the homeless on the streets to the politicians railing for a fix in the legislative assembly.

Everyone knows somebody addicted to some degree to alcohol, drugs or tobacco. All social issues – suicide, poverty and family violence, among them – are intertwined with the plight of addictions.

Try as they might, the powers that be have not had spectacular success in lowering addiction rates in the territory.

While Nunavut has relatively low rates for overall alcohol consumption per capita, it simultaneously holds the second highest rates for hospitalizations relating to substance abuse in the country, with alcohol being the substance most responsible. This suggests heavy binging behaviour when alcohol is available.

Crime rates, meanwhile, which in Nunavut are almost invariably tied to alcohol consumption, are the second highest in the country after the Northwest Territories. Nunavut's

Judges, lawyers, doctors and other health professionals, police officers and social workers, not to mention the armies of bureaucrats required to administer over all of these professionals, have to be coaxed from down south – at great expense – to ensure there is a system in place to deal with Nunavut's addictions.

What Nunavut has is not so much a healing system but a process and management system. This is where the system must change.

The Nunavut government has at least recognized that an in-house solution is required and has taken a "made-in-Nunavut" approach in

commissioning a 2018 report by NVision Insight Group which has outlined the need for better on-theland healing services and a Nunavut treatment centre.

Right now, Nunavummiut must leave the territory to access residential treatment programs.

This report highlighted the fiveyear timetable for an addictions treatment centre based in Iqaluit, workforce development for the centre and some on-the-land programming at $55 million. In contrast the cost of treating substance abuse for Nunavummiut in 2014 was tabulated at $96 million.

The more resources the territory has at home to combat addictions, the more Nunavummiut themselves are involved in treating people, the more likely there will be success.

The fight against addictions is a fight Nunavummiut themselves must lead.

It will be with the helping hands of families, friends and neighbours who care, with knowledge based in Northern knowledge and values, that will lead the way in curbing addictions in Nunavut.

The silence of freedom lost The hot topic of conversation across the hockey-mad Kivalliq region during the past week was, of course, centred around the dismissal of Don Cherry from Coach's Corner on Hockey Night in Canada for his "you people" reference to those who weren't wearing poppies in this country as Remembrance Day approached.

It will come as no shock to regular readers of Kivalliq News that I am a Cherry fan, but that comes from his knowledge of the game of the hockey and his 'every fan' persona.

Although I believe he meant well, he was off with the words he chose.

But, the three things that bother me most about Cherry's dismissal are, first and foremost by a mile, what has become of free speech in our country, followed closely by how we pick and choose who to punish for falling outside the boundaries of this politically-correct-gone-mad era and, finally, how one person is persecuted to the max for their slip, while another says much more and escapes with barely a whisper as long as they reside in, or are speaking-out against, the proper demographic.

The timing of the Cherry dismissal was more than a little ironic when you look at what Remembrance Day stands for, and how many

people paid the ultimate price so that we could retain that very same freedom Cherry was persecuted for.

And, apparently, the term "you people" is more disparaging to many in this country than a prime minister who, as an adult, heads out for a night of merriment dressed in his "black face" best.

Strange times indeed.

While pundits across this nation were falling all over each other to get their digs in at Cherry – many of them have never understood Cherry's popularity with the public and have resented him for it for decades – one panelist on the TV program, The Social, took it a step further and attacked hockey players and their parents en masse.

Compare "you people" being said on the air in context to not wearing a poppy on Remembrance Day in your new country, to Jess Allen's comments on The Social.

Allen first admitted that she doesn't worship at the altar of hockey, then added a certain type of person comes to her mind when you're talking about those who do.

Allen described 'those people' (ironic, eh) as all tending to be "white boys who were, let's say, not very nice.

"They were not generally thoughtful. They were often bullies.

I agree with those who submit that Allen's rant was worse than everything Don Cherry has said collectively during his 38-plus years on the air.

To me, if we're going to slowly, but systematically, give up all the rights and freedoms that so many gave their lives to protect, let's at least persecute everyone equally who falls outside our artificial boundaries of offensiveness.

More and more topics are now forever banned from being discussed in the public forum, and what you can say, and what you can get away with, now depends far more on who you are and what demographic you originate from than what you actually said.

There is no more equality in this country. It is gone forever, if it ever truly existed at all.

Another freedom lost of our own free will.

Square dancing is a 'big deal'

Kangiqliniq/Rankin Inlet Lindsey Qanguq,has been square dancing since the age of 4 and continues to love it, especially while squaring off with dance partner Sapaattiaq Gamie Oqallak.

Qanguq stressed that square dancing is a "big deal" for her.

For 2020, Qanguq is looking forward to a square dance competition in Rankin Inlet.

Although the details of the competition are unknown at this time, she hopes to form a team.

She is welcoming anyone who is under 20 years of age to reach out to her. Ideally she is seeking nine girls and nine boys.

Voters in Hall Beach going back to the polls after mayor resigns

Sanirajak/Hall Beach The newly-elected mayor of Hall Beach has resigned and a byelection will be held early in the new year to find his replacement.

Jayko Simonie earned 81 votes to Jason Kaernerk's 68 in the Oct. 28 municipal election but Simonie notified the hamlet that he is stepping down for personal reasons. Hamlet council subsequently passed a motion to hold another mayoral election in February, although the date is still to be confirmed.

Only four people allowed their names to stand as councillors and they took their seats by acclimation in October: Peter Siakuluk, Roger Beaudry, Timothy Kuppaq and Valerie Curley.

The remainder of council was appointed.

Voter turnout in Hall Beach was 35.9 per cent for the municipal election.

Hunting activity picks up in Iglulik as sea ice forms

Iglulik The sea ice that allows passage from Iglulik Island to the

mainland has gradually been forming and it has given passage to hunters in pursuit of prey – at least via carefully selected routes.

"Some of the ice is still very thin," warned Jacob Malliki, manager of the local hunters and trappers association.

Some harvesters have been fishing while others are already gone in search of caribou on the mainland, he said. Caribou are sometimes located in the direction of Hall Beach and sometimes towards Naujaat, he noted. "(They manufacture) good snow machines now," a chuckling Malliki said of the long distances travelled to hunt ungulates.

In addition, four polar bears were killed north of the community by different hunting parties earlier in November, said Malliki. The community still has seven polar bear tags remaining, he added.

New fire halls going up in Arctic Bay, Kugaaruk

Arctic Bay/Kugaaruk Fire hall construction is progressing in Arctic Bay and Kugaaruk.

Each structure has a budget of $4.8 million, supplied through the Government of Nunavut, according to the Department of Community and Government Services (CGS).

The exterior structure is complete in Arctic Bay and work on the interior will continue until a winter shutdown takes effect, likely in December, according to a CGS spokesperson. In Kugaaruk, the foundation is complete and work on the building will begin in the spring.

Each measuring 2,430 square feet, both fire halls are expected to be finished by summer 2021. They will feature training areas, space for firefighters to roll out and dry their gear and equipment, and office space.

The GN is in the planning phase for fire halls to be built in Arviat and Whale Cove. Those two projects will join others in the "planning portfolio" and a decision is expected to be made in fall 2020 as to which communities have the highest priority ranking for future construction, the department's spokesperson said.

Food bank continues to feed 100 families biweekly

Mittimatalik/Pond Inlet Since Feb. 2019, the Mittima Food Bank Society has been regularly distributing different kinds of food to Pond Inlet community members. For example, last weekend hamburger meat, sandwich meat, hot dogs, pizza dough, lettuce, tomatoes, bananas, apples, kiwi, bread, milk and soup were handed out.

The bulk of the money for this program comes from the grants provided by Qikiqtaini Inuit Association. Volunteers set up the food for distribution, while board members order the food and track expenses.

"Every second Saturday, we receive the food delivery from a co-op and we get it organized, bagged and ready to distribute," explained Wayne Olson, the treasurer of the organization.

This is followed by an hour of "pretty intense" activity and cleanup afterwards.

Biweekly, the food banks helps out about 100 families.

It is open to helping anyone who is need of food.

"We have enough funds at the moment, either in hand or committed. We can see doing distributions every two weeks through to the end of August, maybe a litter longer," stated Olson.

Nunavut's MP makes it official

Mumilaaq Qaqqaq of Baker Lake was sworn-in as a member of Parliament on Tuesday.

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau revealed his cabinet on Wednesday. Carolyn Bennett, a Toronto MP, returns as minister of Crown-Indigenous Relations.

Her department oversees the Inuit-Crown relationship with an aim to “enable Indigenous peoples to build capacity and support their vision of self-determination,” according to the Government of Canada.

Dan Vandal was named minister of Northern Affairs while Marc Miller takes over as minister of Indigenous Services.

Vandal hails from Manitoba and served five terms as a city councillor in Winnipeg. He also served as the city's deputy mayor. As Northern Affairs minister, he will have a hand in issues such as the effects of climate change, infrastructure, transportation, energy and economic development in Canada's Arctic region.

Miller, who represents a Montreal constituency, is a lawyer who was parliamentary secretary for CrownIndigenous relations in the previous Liberal government. He is tasked with addressing housing, education and water quality in Indigenous communities.

Nunavut MP Mumilaaq Qaqqaq was welcomed to her new role in Parliament on Tuesday while surrounded by her parents, Pia and Jimmy, and NDP leader Jagmeet Singh. "Special shout-out to my amazing parents that travelled over 2,400km to be here," Qaqqaq wrote.

High praise for Jim Kreuger Baker Lake coach receives First Air President's Award of Excellence

Leave it Jim Kreuger to think of others when accepting an award.

The Baker Lake coach was named the winner of the First Air President's Award of Excellence by the Recreation and Parks Association of Nunavut during a recent ceremony in Iqaluit.

The award – for Kreuger's work with local amateur sports in Baker Lake – is for the period covering April 1, 2018, until March 31, 2019.

Kreuger was quite humble in his acceptance of the First Air President's Award of Excellence and said, upon hearing he had won the award, the first thought he had was that there are so many people more deserving of the honour.

He said he really had to wonder if they got it right in naming him as this year's winner.

"In town here, there are a lot of people I work with who have worked longer and do more for sports than I do," said Kreuger.

"I was very honoured and grateful for the award, but I feel quite undeserving because since I do volunteer in sport, I'm aware of people who do so much more."

Kreuger coached indoor soccer in Baker for about four years and has worked as an elementary phys-ed teacher for the past three years, spending a lot of time on after-school sports on top of his regular duties.

His biggest contribution to local amateur sports, however, comes from his dedication to minor hockey, which he has coached and been involved with at the executive level for a quarter century.

He continues to coach at the initiation-andnovice levels, which he took over with other local people about seven years ago.

Kreuger said he hasn't coached hockey at the older levels for quite some time, preferring, instead, to concentrate on kids just entering the game.

He said there are 31 kids registered for initiation in Baker this year, as well as 33 registered for novice.

"The biggest change I've seen, especially with the younger kids, is the level of parental involvement with the game today," said Kreuger.

"When I first started to coach, it was to help one of my neighbours, Frank Tootoo. He asked me help and, since my son was just a little toddler playing hockey at the time, I agreed.

"Back then, it was just a couple of us out on the ice with a bunch of kids but, today, while

there are two of us signed up as coaches, at any given practice we could have as many as six parents out on the ice, a number of moms and dads in the penalty box or bench areas helping out, and plenty of grammas and grandpas in the stands watching.

"The amount of parental and family involvement with hockey in Baker Lake is the biggest change I've seen in the past 25 years and I see that as huge, positive change."

The game of hockey has undergone significant changes in Baker during the past two decades, with interest at the older levels waning for years and then starting to strongly rebound.

Kreuger sees that pattern as the result of body checking in the game, which may have turned-off some players who just wanted to have fun playing hockey.

He said there have been strong enrollment numbers at the initiation, novice and atom levels for the past seven years.

"For a while, our numbers took a dip when players entered the peewee and bantam levels and body contact came into play," said Kreuger, noting that body contact has since been removed from peewee across Canada.

"Our kids at the older levels now have the same people coaching from year to year and they're starting to meet with success.

"That has encouraged, I believe, more kids to continue on through peewee/bantam into midget, where our numbers used to be sparse and we'd often have to team up with other communities to participate in tournaments.

"We're soon going to reach the point where we have enough homegrown talent to fill out teams in years to come and that's because the volunteer coaches now commit to it, meaning it's no longer a one-and-out thing in Baker Lake."

Kreuger said, by his definition, the future of minor hockey is bright in Baker.

He said he defines that future as kids simply having fun and enjoying playing hockey.

"We have our share of talent now and that talent will soon start to show itself at the territorial level, so, by that standard, other people will soon start to see the quality hockey players we have here.

"We've always had a love of hockey in Baker Lake in terms of participation, kids practicing, playing on our Sunday game days and things of that nature.

"The love of hockey has always existed in Baker Lake and that love continues today, possibly even more so."

tion right on up to midget. The off-ice activities are happening at Simon Allaituq School and include workshops on personal growth and dryland training.

Everything is set to wrap up on Nov. 27 with games happening for each of the divisions.

When it comes to the arena, it received its official grand opening on Nov. 23 at 1 p.m.

Arctic Winter Games team selected following Nunavut Speed Skating Championships

Another team is set to go for the 2020 Arctic Winter Games and it's one which could make a lot of noise like it did in 2018.

Team Nunavut's speedskating team has been confirmed following the Nunavut Speed Skating Championships in Iqaluit on Nov. 16.

Mike DeMaio, vice-president of the Nunavut Speed Skating Association, led the organization of the meet at the Arctic Winter Games Arena

and said a total of around 30 skaters, all from the capital, hit the ice for the annual competition but not everyone was trying for the big show in Whitehorse this coming March.

"About half were competing for a spot," he said.

From that group, 12 in total managed to make it onto the team along with one alternate but there's one group notable by its absence. There are juvenile girls, juvenile boys and junior girls but no junior boys.

DeMaio said that all has to do with the numbers.

"It's just a struggle to try and maintain those boys in the 14-16 age category," he said. "We're competing with hockey and other sports for that age bracket and there's also the population barrier. We just don't have the numbers like the larger centres do."

Running the event took plenty of volunteers to pull off, he added, from the timers right on down to the lap counter.

"I don't think there were too many parents who had the chance to be just a spectator," he said with

a giggle. "We rely on volunteers to make sure it's done well and we had a lot of parents who stepped up."

The head referee for the event was Chris Gauthier, a Level III official from New Brunswick, and his designation means he can referee anywhere in Canada.

It also allows him to run clinics and that's what happened prior to everything getting underway as Gauthier hosted an officials training workshop on Nov. 14 to get everyone ready for the main event.

"It was a good, long seminar,"

said DeMaio. "Everything was done in-house and he made sure everyone knew what they were doing."

With the team now picked, DeMaio said those skaters will continue training but the focus will also turn to the younger skaters for the remainder of the season.

"We're going to make sure they get the proper training because they are the future Nunavut speedskaters," he said. "They can look at what the Arctic Winter Games skaters are doing and think to themselves 'I can do this'."
