Tagaq's Split Tooth nominated for first novel award Northern News Services

Nunavut

Inuk performer Tanya Tagaq's first literary contribution, Split Tooth, is up for another award.

Amazon Canada and The Walrus Foundation has the book as one of its nominees for the 43rd annual First Novel Award, a prize meant to honour the achievement of Canadian authors and their debut novels.

Little Fish by Casey Plett, Johnny Appleseed by Joshua

Whitehead, Reproduction by Ian Williams and The Amateurs by Liz Harmer join Split Tooth.

Tagaq's first book was previously longlisted for the 2018 Scotiabank Giller Prize and won the 2018 Alcuin Society Awards for Excellence in Book Design for Prose Fiction.

He never took no for an answer – remembering Joe Enook MLA and Speaker was a professional, polite and stern man who put Inuit first

Joe Enook's death the evening of March 29 – made public the next morning – devastated his friends and colleagues and saddened many Nunavummiut.

The following Monday, when the Nunavut Mining Symposium opened, it couldn't be business as usual.

Baffin Region Chamber of Commerce president Victor Tootoo held a moment of silence before guest speaker, Bank of Canada Governor Stephen S. Poloz, was introduced.

A pained hush blanketed the room.

Minister of Finance George Hickes then stood before those assembled and spoke of Enook.

"He was a very close friend and it's been a rough couple of days," said Hickes.

"I probably wouldn't have been in cabinet, at least as early as I was, without his guidance and direction. He never took no for an answer.

I said no many times about joining cabinet and look where I am. Obviously, he's very persistent and very loved."

Professional, polite and stern, he never took no for an answer when he believed in something.

Enook was 15 years old when Fred Hunt, then an adult educator, met him in 1971.

Hunt and Enook would go on to work together, building the Tununiq Sauniq Co-operative, then its hotel. Enook was the hotel's first manager.

"Even though he was quite half my age ... he was like my younger brother.

"I started pushing him, at a very young age, into the world of Inuit politics. I urged him to go as far as he could. When he became chairman of the board of the Baffin Divisional Board of Education, he was very, very proud of that. But I continually hammered at him

that this was step one," said Hunt.

"I said, 'This is step one, buddy. You can go all the way to Ottawa if you want to and represent your people in the federal government.' I never stopped pushing for that."

Hunt says what drove Enook was his passion for his community and his people.

"He was driven from a very young age to preserve the culture of the Inuit and the language and the way of life. He was very driven to dedicate his life to making sure that was retained in whatever was going

to happen. That thread ran through everything he did."

A time away from Pond Inlet Enook first left Pond Inlet for Iqaluit in 1994. He worked at Nunavut Tunngavik Inc. as president Jose Kusugak's executive assistant, then rejoined Hunt, who had taken on the task of turning the debt-laden Nunasi Corporation around.

Enook would become vice-president of Nunavut operations and head up the head office in Iqaluit. He also served on several boards.

Once a year, Enook returned to Pond Inlet to live a more traditional, relaxing way of life, according to Nunavut News archives.

"I try and do some Eskimo living for a couple of weeks every year," he said in August 2001.

"I go home, leave my cell phone behind and eat, sleep and hunt whenever I feel like it."

He also said: "There comes a point when you have to decide what you want to do. Sometimes you have to leave home to acquire a job or education. I'm honoured to be given that choice."

Hunt says, while he introduced Enook to a world of growth and change, Enook made sure Hunt stayed grounded in accomplishing positive change for Inuit.

A defenceman at heart Tununiq voters chose Enook as their representative in a September 2011 by-election. One campaign promise was that he'd move back to Pond Inlet. This he did, despite the fact he and his wife Mary Kilabuk had to live in a shack for quite some time. From then on, he repeatedly brought attention to the housing crisis in Nunavut.

Enook was re-elected in 2013 and 2017 and was subsequently named Speaker of the legislative assembly.

Former premier and Nunavut land-claim negotiator Paul Quassa first met Enook during the latter's board of education days and worked with Enook when he was a regular member, then speaker.

"I admired him for his desire to speak Inuktitut only, even though he was bilingual," said Quassa, adding both as a regular member and as speaker, Enook used his language.

"He truly was promoting

Quassa also recalls Enook as welcoming, always making those around him comfortable, including in his distinctive way of carrying out his speaker's duties.

"Every morning he'd come around before we went into session, asking each and every one of us if we were going to do a member's statement or if we were going to ask a question," Quassa said.

"He always had this little piece of paper and he'd go around with his speaker's attire just before the session and that was unique. In the previous speakers, I've never seen that.

"It was so welcoming, knowing that he cared."

Quassa calls Enook a true Tununiqmiut, who "represented that constituency so well."

Hudson Bay MLA Allan Rumbolt agrees.

"He always put others before himself," said Rumbolt.

"His main goal was to take care of his community and do what he felt was best for his community and secondly, what was best for the people of Nunavut."

The $41.2 million Pond Inlet small craft harbour project, currently under development, was his primary pursuit.

He never took no for an answer on that matter either.

"It was something he fought for from day one. I thought he'd be barking up a tree trying to get one," said Rumbolt.

"He managed to convince the government it was a need for the community."

Rumbolt said Enook did not have qualms about advising fellow MLAs or letting them know when they were doing something wrong.

He loved hockey and preferred to watch it live at the local arena rather than on TV. Larry McGowan recalls his floor-hockey teammate much the same as described by the people in Enook's professional life. They began playing together not long after Joamie School burned down in 2003.

"We kept it up for a few years and stayed friends ever since," said McGowan, who recalls the easy, friendly hugs Enook was always quick to give, right to the last time they saw each other, a month before Enook died.

"He was funny. When we were playing floor hockey, he didn't mind telling people, making sure they were in the right position, making sure they did this, they did that. We had a special kind of relationship."

McGowan played goal. In hockey as in politics, Enook was the defender.

Nanilavut's early success brings relief NTI provides assistance for those looking for loved ones' lost graves

Jack Anawak searched for his mother's grave for years, mostly trying to track word-of-mouth information offered to him.

Now the Nanilavut (Let's find them) database has confirmed the location.

Nanilavut officially launched March 8 in Iqaluit when Prime Minister Justin Trudeau apologized for the government's treatment of Inuit during the tuberculosis epidemic (TB).

Piovaa was taken from Naujaat to the south for medical treatment, at the same time others were heading south for TB treatment, in 1956 when Anawak was six.

"Two years later, March of 1958, we got word that she had passed away," Anawak recalled.

"They didn't tell us where she was buried."

When Anawak spoke with Nunavut News in May 2017, he felt he might be getting close to finding her.

Most recently, he felt even closer, based on information from a woman Anawak's wife Caroline met by chance in Fort Qu'Appelle, Sask.

"But we didn't have the resources to really look. So when the Nanilavut program started, I gave them my mother's name and disc number.

They found her," said Anawak. "It was that place, Oak River Reserve Cemetery. Nanilavut proved it."

Piovaa's grave is Nanilavut's first success, found within a week of the launch.

"And by the way, Trudeau apologized 61 years to the day of my mother's death, March 8," said Anawak.

The date is meaningful to Anawak, because his mother has always found ways to communicate with him through encounters with others throughout Nunavut who had known her.

Joanasie Akumalik is Nunavut Tunngavik Inc.'s Nanilavut project manager. He says at least 15 people have come forward asking for help to find a loved one's grave in the south The database contains roughly 900 names of Inuit who never returned from TB treatment in the south.

Three graves have officially been matched with searching family members so far, says Akumalik.

He lays out the process.

"Usually, they'll call me first," he said. "Then they start telling the story. It gets emotional."

Akumalik is uniquely suited to do this difficult but rewarding job. He helped his father and uncle find their father's grave at a Hamilton, Ont., cemetery. He likens it to detective work. There are multiple spellings of names and E-numbers can be repeated. Records kept by each cemetery are different.

"Some of them have good records and some of them don't. There was a story of an 'unknown Eskimo' in Yellowknife. We expected that," said Akumalik, adding in some cases cremation took place or a location is unknown.

"We expect that, too," said Akumalik.

"So my job is to get that piece of information. I connect the dots to get the proper information. I have to be 100 per cent sure."

The process can take 10 minutes or a few weeks, depending on many factors, including provincial government response time.

People are relieved when they receive information and very emotional, Akumalik said. There are mental health supports for those who need it.

"In the end, it was a feeling of great relief," said Anawak about Piovaa's grave being definitively located.

"And almost like euphoria. I'm still sort of thinking that the real emotional feeling will be when we get to that cemetery."

Anawak will have help with that, as well, explains Akumalik. Nanilavut funds two airline tickets for family members, accommodations and meals.

"Some people have asked if NTI can produce a marker if the grave doesn't have a marker. We can do that," said Akumalik.

Akumalik can also help organize flights, transportation on the ground, hotel reservations, directions to the cemetery and what to expect once they get to the cemetery.

"I have plans to go down on June 10th, with my adoptive sister – because she was my adoptive mother – her (Piovaa's) only daughter," said Anawak.

"I'm just so happy, I want the whole world to know, even though I'm sure it will be emotional when we get there."

No future if youth aren't supported Northern News Services

As we wind down the school year, Northern youth are preparing for the summer and reaping the rewards of hard work the rest of the year.

In Gjoa Haven, youth from Cambridge Bay took home not only the youth title from the Square Dance Showdown, but also the overall prize. Oh and $10,000.

In the NWT, artist Kablusiak (Jade Nasogaluak Carpenter) is the first Inuvialuk long-listed for the prestigious Sobey Art Award worth $100,000. Like 2006 winner Annie Pootoogook, Kablusiak makes art that highlights everyday life, in Kablusiak's case to address cultural displacement.

Meanwhile, fellow Inuvialuk Tyra Cockney-Goose earned a $25,000 scholarship after submitting a video application to the STEAM Horizon Awards. Just last year, she won bronze at the Canada-Wide Science Fair in Ottawa and was invited back to the nation's capital for the Prime Minister's Science Fair.

Here in Nunavut, four young women from Iqaluit are now preparing their own trip to Ottawa for the Canada-Wide Science Fair after taking the top three spots at the first Qikiqtaaluk Science Fair in 18 years.

These same youth are the target of a scholarship from a corporate citizen new to Nunavut, diamond giant De Beers, which is offering nine scholarships worth $4,800 US each for women entering a STEM (science, technology, engineering, math) program at a Canadian postsecondary institution. Preference is given to Indigenous women from the North.

And let's not forget the young people from Cambridge Bay who won $100,000 from the Arctic Inspiration Prize for taking scrap metal and turning it into art.

The point is, there are opportunities for Nunavut's youth to achieve and be rewarded for their hard work.

On the flip side, many of the youth we don't hear about are not achieving because we adults too often fail to provide the opportunities they need.

The repeated refrain from Nuna-

vut Tunngavik Inc. is that the Government of Nunavut is failing Nunavut's youth by not providing bilingual education.

This appears, at this moment, to be close to a lost cause. The government is barely able to provide the tools to get our youth to graduation, let alone graduation in the Inuit language.

The federal government, too, fails by lacking the bravery to make the investments required to put an end to the housing crisis and the food insecurity too many youth – and their families – face every day.

But we as regular citizens have many opportunities to step up more than we do. We hear regular reports of youth programs at risk as adult leaders and coaches leave town or move on to a different activity.

It takes a community to get youth to dance competitions and out-oftown sporting events and frankly, even to get them to university.

It may be easy – and effective – for adults to offer the money to make these things possible.

But lately, it seems, Nunavut's youth need adults just as much to offer their time over the long haul to help as educators, coaches, travelling companions and advocates.

weather is here with lots of sunshine, but on some days it is windy and chilly. Lots of snow, which means there will be many slippery areas in town and on the public walking areas on roads. Cambridge Bay has always had icy roads, so please be extra careful when walking or driving.

The ice road is now re-opened and many vehicles and snowmobiles have been enjoying the scenic drive. Please be careful when on the ice road.

A few residents have been out ice-fishing up at the lakes close by. Mainly getting lake trout, some whitefish and the odd Arctic char. This time of year you will see our school students heading out on the land for day trips close by.

A popular place for kids is Jacks Point, where they set up a tent(s) to make tea, stew, bannock and for kids to go sliding and enjoying spring weather. It is important that your child wears sunglasses as it is a bad time of the year for whiteout conditions and snowblindness may occur.

NTI to UN: Nunavut education a crime against Inuit Report by linguistic human rights and minority rights experts takes GN to task

ing to a new research report commissioned by Nunavut Tunngavik Inc. (NTI) and released at the 18th session of the United Nations Permanent Forum on Indigenous

Issues in New York City April 22.

continues today," stated NTI president Aluki Kotierk in a news release.

"Inuit children receive the majority of their education in the dominant languages instead of their mother tongue. This constitutes cultural genocide."

In Nunavut, Inuit children have a right to education in Inuktut.

The 83-page report is titled: "Is Nunavut education criminally inadequate? An analysis of current policies for Inuktut and English in education, international and national law, linguistic and cultural genocide and crimes against humanity".

The report is written by human rights lawyer Robert Dunbar, who specializes in minority rights and Tove Skutnabb-Kangas and Robert Phillipson, who have co-authored and edited many books on linguistic human rights worldwide, multilingual education policy, including mother-tongue-based multilingual education and the role of English in the modern world.

"It appears that in Nunavut, despite many good intentions and plans, the formal education of Inuit students is not achieving good results,

nor does it live up to the wishes of most parents, or follow principles that research has identified as necessary for good results," state the authors.

The report outlines the relationship between education in Nunavut and social and economic conditions for Inuit, which are disastrous as compared to those enjoyed by Canadian citizens generally.

Speaking to Nunavut News after her UN intervention – the Arctic caucus allowed her to use its three minutes of allotted time to speak – Kotierk indicated the Government of Nunavut is currently drafting its new proposed Education Act. "There is no movement towards working together," she said.

Further, Kotierk asserts the territorial government needs reform, and an ideological shift.

"I know people make comments, 'Well, there are Inuit members of the legislative assembly, there are Inuit employees.' But it doesn't boil down to any one individual.

It's the system," she said.

"If the ideological approach is not centered on Inuit, Inuit culture, and Inuit Qaujimajatuqangit, and if the

territorial public government continues to look outwards to other jurisdictions, trying to replicate things, of course it's going to continue to not build the capacity of Inuit and continue in the vein of subtractive education this report outlines."

Minister of Crown– Indigenous Relations Carolyn Bennett invited Sanikiluaq's Kelly Amaujaq Fraser to address the forum. One need look no further than her statements to understand the effects the current education system has.

"I am a proud Inuk that speaks Inuktitut despite mom going to residential school.

I have been saved by writing songs in Inuktitut and I recognize that I have a lot to give and more people to save," said Fraser, who recommended the forum urge member states to recognize Indigenous languages officially as national languages.

"With loss we gained resiliency, and by working with our governments, let's responsibly implement laws, treaties and land claims through being heard and together, we can save the world," Fraser said.

Cherished clothing featured at fashion show

Iqaluit While Iguptaq Autut moved around a lot, working at mining camps and other places, he stored the caribou clothing his mother made him almost 20 years ago with a friend.

"Several years ago, I settled down and he came over and said, 'Here, you can keep these now," said Autut, who is originally from Chesterfield Inlet.

"He took really good care of them."

This year, Autut decided to participate in Iqaluit's Toonik Tyme fashion show on April 16.

"I wanted to show my panik, go on stage so she could see that," said Autut. "It was more for her than anything else."

Autut says his mother, Evelyn Tamnaruluk Autut, made all the family's clothing.

"Caribou clothing, sealskin clothing – she made them all. It was a big family, too. When I got older, drying caribou skins kind of became my job," he said.

Autut was very happy to be wearing the clothes his mother had made him.

"I could see the crowd was warm, for her," he said. "She did a great job, she made these.

People still loved it, even after all these years.

There was a moment there, I felt something."

"I was trying to focus on my daughter, but there were so many people there."

Autut had been worried time might have damaged the clothing.

"But they're still beautiful. I want to pass them along, maybe for my daughter."

Iqaluit After a banner first year which saw Nunavut musicians gain unprecedented national attention, Nunavut Music Week is back for a second go April 25 to 28.

"For its second iteration, Nunavut Music Week is thrilled to welcome Tom Power, host of CBC's q, to Iqaluit for the first time for an official NMW 2.0 kick-off event," stated organiser Aakuluk Music, the territory's first record label.

"The conference will also include artist development and mentorship daytime programming and evening performances."

The q event, which takes place Thursday night, is sold out.

Evening performances Friday and Saturday take place at the Legion, with doors opening at 9.

The line-up for Friday includes Joey Nowyuk, Aasiva, FXCKMR and Josh Q and The Trade-Offs.

The Saturday line-up includes Lazarus and Allan Kangok, Daniel Kolola, Kelly Fraser and Riit.

Also on Saturday, Alianait presents Hannah Georgas in concert, with Iglulik's Angela Amarualik. That concert takes place at Inuksuk High School, starting at 7:30 p.m.

Baker Lake students open time capsule

Qamanittuaq/Baker Lake Students at Jonah Amitnaaq Secondary School (JASS) in Baker Lake recently revelled in looking through items stashed away a decade ago.

Students who were in Grade 2 in 2009 took part in opening the time capsule in the school gym on April 10 and the community was invited to observe.

The objects inside the box were put there during the graduation ceremony held in 2009.

Among the items were rubber boots, a CD full of pictures and a student's graduation jacket. There were also class pictures and student memoirs.

"After everything was taken out, we laid them out on tables in the school atrium for display. The community will be able to go see them until the end of April," said Kimberly Aqigaaq, a member of the JASS student council.

Principal Chris Snow told the audience that it's important to reflect on Nunavut's 20 years as a territory and where Nunavummiut are going in the future.

JASS students and staff are hoping to refill the time capsule and put it back in its spot in the school's main office for another 10 years.

Iglulik Iglulik's landfill will be scrutinized by consultants in a few weeks to get a handle on how much it would likely cost to organize the dump and remove contaminants.

Representatives of Dillon Consulting are expected to arrive May 27 as part of a wider initiative through the Government of Nunavut to assess landfills across the territory.

Iglulik senior administrative officer Greg Morash said he doesn't know how old the dump is, but he suspects there are undesirable items and substances that ideally should be removed.

"Unfortunately when they built this dump they didn't segregate it very well," he said, adding that the landfill is located about 1.5 kilometres from the community.

Based on his past experience from other communities, Morash said he knows of dump cleanups with estimated costs between $35,000 and $80 million, the latter due to the existence of hazardous waste.

New rec co-ordinator seeks funds

Kugluktuk Stephanie Fummerton took over as Kugluktuk's recreation co-ordinator in early April and one of her first orders of business was helping organize the Nattiq Frolics spring carnival.

Now that the carnival is over, she's busy writing funding proposals to maintain some of the community's existing recreation programming and develop a few new options.

Applying for funding is nothing new to Fummerton. She submitted plenty of applications while serving as the program counsellor with the Moving Forward Together program, which promoted healthy living and traditional activities for five years before the program expired in March.

Some of the items on her agenda are planning for summer camp, the lacrosse program and celebrations for Canada Day and Nunavut Day. The transition into her new job has been made much easier by her past experience and familiarity with the community's youth, she acknowledged.

"I know most of them, I'm just in a different role now," said Fummerton.

The club's projects include: raising rabbits, chicken and quail; phone book and pop-can recycling; student research projects; and egg incubation.

The event take place from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Qikiqtaaluk The Qikiqtani Inuit Association (QIA) has several open positions on a variety of boards and committees and the deadline for application is fast approaching.

Seats are open with the Nunavut Trust, the Kakivak Association, the Qikiqtaaluk Corporation, Kakivak Grants and Loans Appeals Committee, the Joint Parks Management Committee for Quttinniqpaaq National Park, Sirmilik National Park and Sanikiluaq Territorial Park.

"To be considered, candidates must be actively and personally committed to represent the interest of Qikiqtani Inuit and have a sound understanding of the Nunavut Agreement as it relates to the roles and mandates of the posIqaluit ition," stated QIA. All positions are three-year terms.

Designers share international experience Iqaluit fashion show returns two women to their roots

For fashion designers Victoria Kakuktinniq and Melissa Attagutsiak, sharing the thrill and success of a job well done with family and friends is at the heart of the Upingaksaaq Fashion Show the two teamed up to produce April 20 in Iqaluit.

Attagutsiak, like Kakuktinniq, brought a collection to Paris for

the International Indigenous Fashion Week, held during Paris Fashion Week in early March.

That's where the two met.

"I really love to see everybody come together to put on the show.

There's so many things that go into it.

I love to bring it back home to where I learned how to sew," said Attagutsiak, who now lives in Ottawa, at a preshow news conference.

And, it does help promote our business, of course," said Kakuktinniq, who moved to Iqaluit from her hometown of Rankin Inlet a few years ago. And, as is the way, they brought along a crowd of Inuit co-creators to enjoy the limelight on the catwalk built in a transformed Koojesse Room in the capital's main hotel.

Other designers showcased included: InukChic's Martha Kyak of Pond Inlet, Sophia's Outerwear's Chelsey St. John of Arviat, Kayleigh's Fashions' Kristy King and Chantel Kablutsiak, also of Arviat and the Miqqut Project, a literacy and sewing program offered by Ilitaqsiniq Nunavut Literacy Council.

A portion of evening's proceeds are destined for the Qimaavik women's shelter in Iqaluit and Kakuktinniq explains why.

"From January to April, I was teaching a sewing program called the Miqqut Project, which is run by the literacy council. A lot of the ladies, the participants, were from the women's shelter," she said.

"We just finished the sewing program last Friday and a lot of the ladies were really sad that it was ending, so I thought this would be a really great opportunity for us to donate some

funds, to maybe donate some sewing machines and materials for them."

A pilot version of the Miqqut Project took place in Kakuktinniq's hometown of Rankin Inlet in 2012 – and she has previously credited that program as her introduction to traditional sewing.

"After I made my very first parka, I thought, 'This is what I want to do.'

They taught us from start to finish.

We designed our parka, made the pattern and completed it. Wow. It was so much fun and I just wanted to be able to design more parkas," said Kakuktinniq in 2017.

Kakuktinniq opened her Iqaluit shop 20 months ago. Now she has Paris Fashion Week on her professional resume.

Attagutsiak's business, growing in renown, is called Nuvuja9.

For the show, Aayuraa Studio's Mathew Nuqingaq, ENB Artisan, Kaajuk and LVH Jewelry provided accessories to complete each look.

Nuqingaq, a famed drumdancer as well as jeweler, opened the show.

Musical guests included Riit and Joshua Qaumariaq.

The two designers shared some of their Paris experiences prior to the Iqaluit event, such as acquiring tags for garments which included sealskin.

"We spent the day before trying

to get tags from the Department of Fisheries and Oceans and, thankfully, Kelly Fraser called around and got us those tags the day before we left," said Attagutsiak.

Fraser also modeled Attagutsiak's garments in Paris.

"We were kind of nervous and we tried not to use too much sealskin in our garments because we didn't want to run into any issues," said Kakuktinniq.

For both, Paris Fashion Week was an opportunity to share their Inuit culture and they are grateful and honoured for the opportunity to do so. Being a part of the International Indigenous Fashion Week show at the Eiffel Tower was especially an opportunity to witness the traditional touches other Indigenous designers weaved into their collections.

"We both decided that it would be a really great idea for us to come back to Iqaluit and show our friends and family our garments," said Kakuktinniq.

"I'm really excited that everyone will be able to see what we brought to Paris. I've brought some of the pieces from Paris," said Attagutsiak. "One of the pieces that has sealskin and lace on it, I actually made it in the Eiffel Tower. That's a really cherished piece of mine."

A 20-foot sea can is Kugluktuk's newest source of produce.

Hydroponic growing racks filled with an array of leafy greens are propagating a newfound appreciation for fresh food and culinary arts.

Just check out the Kugluktuk Greenhouse Facebook page, where community members share recipes using the fresh greens they've acquired and tips for storing them in order to see a longer lifespan and regrowth.

"We've seen support from all demographics, all different age groups," said the hamlet's economic development officer Matt Stadnyk. "We do a harvest post every week of what we're growing and people are posting photos of what they're making with it."

The greenhouse is a project of the hamlet's, with Stadnyk taking the lead. He has a dedicated staff who have been the force behind the greenhouse's

successful first season.

Already, as well as selling to community members, the greenhouse is supplying the elementary and high schools' meal programs and broadening the spread at community feasts.

But it is still early days for the Kugluktuk Greenhouse – its first seeds were sown in February and harvested in late March. This is just a pilot season lasting until the end of May and will be a proving ground for 2020, when Stadnyk said the plan is to be operational year-round.

There are certainly challenges to operating a greenhouse at the edge of the Arctic Ocean – the cost of energy in the diesel community being a major one. And that's what the pilot season will help to sort out.

"We want to orient ourselves, see what it takes. We're finding out financial indicators, the breaking even point and staffing cost," said Stadnyk. "With that information, now I can start looking for

funding proposals to cover us for the next year."

The greenhouse is not trying to compete with the grocery stores in town, which Stadnyk points out are an important source of employment for the community. They aren't undercutting prices, but rather complementing what's on offer and ensuring a steady supply of fresh greens is available.

"In the dead of winter, if planes don't land, we still have a source of produce in the community," he said. So far, the most successful plant has been a lettuce mix with five types of lettuce growing together in a bundle.

There is a recipe book in the works that combines the bounty from the greenhouse with the country food regularly eaten in Kugluktuk and the ingredients available at the stores in town. While a bunch of spinach may not appeal to the average elementary school student, he hopes to help change that attitude with the availability of fresh food.

"We can show how to make a sweet salad – with candied nuts, maple dressing – we'll flip the script on what a salad can be," he said.

And next year, the team hopes to grow herbs like basil, which the community has been asking for and which will be key to the speciallycrafted Arctic pesto recipe in the cookbook. Eventually, Stadnyk plans to bring in a subscription model where people sign up ahead of time for a weekly or bi-weekly box of produce, allowing for a bit more ease of planning, with predictable revenue and demand.

For next season, he'd like to see the project funded, with a partner, so that any revenue can fully cover paying staff.

And with the pilot under their belt, that sort of budgeting will be much more manageable.

"If we can get to a point where 100 per cent of the revenue goes back to the community," said Stadnyk, "I'd be thrilled."

Reigning Toonik Tyme Cup champions still the champs after defeating combined squad for title

In the words of Ric Flair: to be the man, you gotta beat the man.

When it comes to the Toonik Tyme Cup senior men's hockey tournament, the men on top are still the men and they haven't yet been beaten.

Bolstered with seven players from the Kivalliq region, Team Canadrill defeated a combined Rankin-Ottawa squad 4-3 in the final game to claim the 2019 Toonik Time Cup senior men's hockey championship in Iqaluit on April 14.

Representing the Kivalliq on Team Canadrill were Keith (Butchy) Sigurdson, Roger Tagoona, Wendel Kaludjak, David Clark, Pujjuut Kusugak and Qaritaq Kusugak-Clark of Rankin Inlet and Roy (Hollywood) Kopak of Naujaat. Cody Dean of Iqaluit, is also originally from Rankin.

Pujjuut said most of the core players on the team returned this year for Canadrill's third straight championship at the event.

He said it was nice to pick up a couple of younger players this tournament, especially since the Canadrill team only had one true defenceman in Kopak.

"We made some adjustments along the way and things worked out for us this time," said Pujjuut.

"The final game was a really hard-fought one, with the Rankin-Ottawa goalie playing amazing between the pipes.

"They put on a real push in the final two minutes, which made the final even more exciting for the fans.

"So, for two years in a row now, we've been in a wicked final game in Iqaluit."

The Rankin-Ottawa team struggled a bit finding their game during the round robin, but came together at the right time to beat a young Iqaluit team on their way to the finals, while Canadrill took out Iqaluit's QC Avalanche to reach the championship game.

Pujjuut said all in all, the Toonik Tyme Cup was a good weekend of hockey.

Team North ready for battle

Nunavut The 2019 National Aboriginal Hockey Championships are taking place in Whitehorse next month and the three territories will once again join forces to take on the country as Team North.

"The cost of travel has a lot to do with it and, also, the lack of fundraising efforts in some communities is another reason some teams don't make it every year."

Pujjuut said the number of regional tournaments now being played means teams from some communities have to choose which ones they're going to attend.

He said in the Kivalliq, no community would risk missing the Terence Tootoo Memorial (TTM) tourney in Rankin Inlet by using all their resources to attend an event in another community.

Pujjuut said he'd love to see Canadrill keep its core players together, at least until their winning streak at Toonik Tyme is snapped.

He said there are special memories to be taken from every championship run.

"This one was really special for David Clark and myself, because my son, Qaritaq, got to play with us in it. It was really nice to have him home and win this tournament with him.

"It was a great weekend together that I'll remember for a very long time."

There was also a B division championship game and that was won by the Iqaluit Bisons as the beat the Iqaluit Flyers.

Iqaluit It's coming to that time where the ice at the Arctic Winter Games Arena in Iqaluit will be put to bed and the turf gets rolled out.

That time is May 13 as the turf will officially open for business at the arena.

The city will be offering free bouncers for youth on that day from 3:30 to 5 p.m. as part of a family drop-in.

A belated greeting from myself to Jews who celebrated Passover earlier this month. I know I'm late but Chag Sameach to you all.

As important a time as it was for Jews around the world, the British Labour Party really needs someone to do some research on how best to recognize the holiest of holy times for the Jews. So the Toronto Raptors are on their way to round two of the NBA Playoffs after dispatching the Orlando Magic in five games. But that's not the reason people are talking about the team.

No, Raptors head coach Nick Nurse is now the king of all memes thanks to his reaction to a call in the first quarter of Game 4 on April 21. If I were to caption it, like many others did, it would be the reaction I'd make if I found out the Toronto Maple Leafs won the Stanley Cup in my lifetime. The runner-up would be replacing the opera singer in that Bugs Bunny skit when he's the conductor of the orchestra.

After the game, Nurse was asked about how he felt being one of the top trending people in social media. I don't know if he was playing dumb but he responded by saying he didn't know what trending was nor did he know if it was good or bad.

In any event, Nurse became more likable, not that he wasn't before.

They came the farthest to play and they very nearly left with the loot.

Iqaluit HC managed to get to the final of the B division at the First Air Rec Hockey Tournament in Yellowknife on April 21 but couldn't close it out, falling 5-2 to the Dawson Creek Canucks from British Columbia.

Iqaluit went into the final with just nine skaters and a goalie, meaning a very short bench, but captain Jonathan Ehaloak said the spirits going into the game were still high.

"They (Dawson Creek) just got the better of us, that's all," he said. "Five games in 72 hours and we had some guys who couldn't make it as the tournament got closer so we weren't able to fill out our roster but we got to the final so it was a fun trip for us."

Dawson Creek opened the scoring early but Iqaluit answered back quickly to tie the game at 1-1 with five minutes gone in the opening period. The Canucks, though, put two quick goals past goaltender Aaron Ejetsiak late in the first period to put a stranglehold on the proceedings.

The Canucks got another in the second to build up a 4-1 lead before Mitchell Tilley scored on the power play to cut the deficit to 4-2, but that was as close as Iqaluit would get as the Canucks potted an empty-netter to salt it away.

"They just outworked us," said Ehaloak.

"They were giving a lot of effort on plays and got a couple of bounces that we didn't get but we played a good game."

Outworking Iqaluit HC was the modus operandi of Dawson Creek, said Jeff Round, who played with the champions.

Nunavut teams have had some luck in the B division in recent years with Iqaluit winning the division in 2016 and Gjoa Haven winning back-to-back titles in 2013 and 2014.

Ehaloak said he was hoping to find a bit of that kind of magic in the final.

"We just try to come here every year and compete as hard as we can," he said. "We're

going to try every year to come back but it all depends on if we can get a team together. We have to cover all the expenses ourselves but Dan (Schofield, tournament organizer) hosts a really good tournament and he invites us back every year and we really enjoy going."

The ultimate payback on behalf of Yellowknife would be for them to head to Iqaluit and play in the Toonik Tyme Cup one year, he added.

"We would love to have one or two teams from Yellowknife come and play," he said. "It's

always a great tournament back home and we'd love to have them experience it."

In addition to Iqaluit, there were teams from Kugaaruk, Cambridge Bay and Gjoa Haven on the ice.

Schofield said this year's tournament was one of the better ones he's seen.

"Thirty-nine teams, one short of a sellout," he said. "We had the Canucks from BC, several teams from Nunavut, lots of communities playing and we're very, very happy with the turnout."

Language report backs NTI concern NTI, from page 10

The report authors conclude the current efforts at bilingual education in the territory are failing Inuit.

"Seen from an educational and psychological point of view, and from the social consequences of current practises, there is prima facie evi-

dence of education in Nunavut being involved in processes and practices of linguistic and cultural genocide," state the authors.

The report also exposes "fraudulent myths" related to the continued dominance of English, and the consequences of buying into those myths.

This latest volley from NTI related to education and Inuktut comes after the Government of Nunavut passed the Interim Language of Instruction Act at the last sitting of

the legislative assembly. The bill to amend the Education Act and ILPA is scheduled to be introduced at the June sitting. These measures continue to defer bilingual Inuktut and English or French education for all Inuit students.

As the report authors state: "In 2016 (this is the latest information we have received, in April 2019) there were 11 schools that had the capacity to deliver Inuktut-medium education from kindergarten to Grade 3; seven schools that

could deliver it up to grade 4, and one up to grade 5.The rest of the schools were not even delivering the minimum K-3 Inuktut-medium education required by the Nunavut Education Act." Meanwhile, the federal government is in the process of passing its Indigenous Languages Act, Bill C-91.

While the report leans into criminalizing Nunavut's education system, Kotierk doesn't foresee legal action.
