Matthew Kunangnat loves to get out on the land when he can and his family obliges.

One spring day in 2018, Winnie Seeteenak snapped a photo of her "cool dad" doing what he loves – which that day was ice fishing out at Big Hips Island outside Baker Lake.

"He loved to fish and hunt. When the weather warms up and when it's not too slushy and when we're all able to help each other, that's when we like to take him out," said Seeteenak.

Moments after Kunangnat caught his first fish, his wife Mercy cooked it up right there on the ice for lunch.

Seeteenak's image won the March 18 Nunavut News Amazing On The Land photo contest and it's been seen by almost 11,000 Facebook users, liked by 658 and shared by 98.

When Seeteenak received the $100 for the most-liked story the week she submitted it, she gave the money to her father and sent that photo to Nunavut News, as well.

"Here he is surprised," stated Seeteenak.

"Once again, thank you for liking his fishing picture. Love my cool dad Matthew Kunangnat."

She says she gave him the money "because he's always needing this and that."

"He doesn't go out anymore. He sends either me or his grandkids to go out to buy this and that because he's very elderly now."

Kunangnat has five children, including his eldest Seeteenak, a dozen grandchildren and seven or eight great-grandchildren.

"He works around, outside the house.

But he doesn't go shopping anymore unless

we take him out. And he loves to have his Copenhagen, his snuff," said Seeteenak.

"Anything to ease his mind and what not.

He's always on the go, but everything slowed down when he got blind."

What Nunavut News readers couldn't know is that 80-year-old Kunangnat caught the most fish the day the winning photo was taken. Not a surprise considering he was the family's provider until he was blinded in a welding accident more than 30 years ago.

"He used to be on the search-and-rescue and he used to be a carpenter and he loves the outdoors," said Seeteenak.

Despite Kunangnat's blindness, his skills were still sought out by the community.

"Sometimes the search party, even though he's blind now, they used to come to him to double-check where they should go.

"They would get some pointers from him," said Seeteenak, adding he's a wellrespected elder.

She calls him her "cool dad" because of her own respect for him.

"I try to do my best for him," she said.

Since the Amazing On the Land photo contest launched in December 2017, there have been 65 weekly winners of $100.

"The Amazing On the Land Contest has given readers an incredible window into the lives of Nunavummiut, doing what people in Arctic love to do, getting out on to the land and sharing their stories with each other," said managing editor Mike W. Bryant.

"It's been a big hit and I'm always wondering what amazing photos will show up in our inbox next. We're honoured that we can help spread people's passion for the land for others to enjoy."

Photos can be submitted via the Nunavut News Facebook page by private message.

Why aren't Nunavut youth into mining?

High schools lack career guidance counsellors, industrial arts classes and info about mines

Industry champions are getting serious about interesting the younger generation in mining careers.

Each year, the Nunavut Mining Symposium gathers hundreds of industry-related workers in the capital to share information about multiple topics but, for the first time, youth engagement made it on the agenda.

"What seemed to be a missing element was engaging the young people, because they are such an important part of our population," said Alex Buchan who, as a TMAC employee, sits on the mining symposium's steering committee.

"A lot of the things our industry is doing is going to affect their lives and provide opportunities going forward for generations to come."

To that end, the committee decided to choose two young people who live near each of the three operating mines – Cambridge Bay, Baker Lake and Pond Inlet – to participate in the symposium. Four of the youth – Lee Qamanirq, Nolan Apaluktuq, Lance Akoluk and Morgan Carter – formed a panel facilitated by Buchan.

Buchan, who organizes community meetings, remarked that youth do not attend these informational events.

"I've noticed that it's very hard to communicate between

generations," said Buchan.

The youth agreed not many of their friends were interested in working at mines, which is likely because they didn't know much about them.

Akoluk said he knows about mining, though he doesn't work at one, because his father has been a long-time employee at Hope Bay and he brought core samples home.

"Your dad has been pivotal with Hope Bay. He can split

core like nobody else. It's so heartening to hear that he has core there in your home and that he talks a little bit about what he does to you," said Buchan.

"Because maybe that doesn't always happen."

Qamanirq works for Baffinland and had just completed his second two-week rotation. It's an adjustment. He misses his two-year-old son.

"It's different, two weeks

on, two weeks off. I'm missing time with my family, but at the same time I'm helping my family. And, at the same time, I'm gaining new family with the people I work with," said Qamanirq.

"Inuit have an opportunity if they wish to go to Baffinland. They just have to have the drive and willingness to do it, make sacrifices. There is an opportunity for Inuit to make a difference for themselves and their future."

Apaluktuq works at Agnico Eagle's Meadowbank mine and is following the company's career path program.

"That is more job security for me and, even right now, I feel I'm going to retire with Agnico," he said.

"Agnico Eagle is 100 per cent with you."

Getting youth into the industry, without four years away from home The youth noted they hadn't ever heard much about mining in their school setting.

This spurred manager of Inuit employment and training with the Kitikmeot Inuit Association Michelle Buchan, who is a former teacher, to share her thoughts.

"When you talk about not knowing anything about mining, I understand. There's a lot to learn," she said.

"I go into the schools in our region whenever I can and one of the things that I noticed when I get in there ... I get the students to brainstorm – what kind of jobs are there in the mining industry. The can usually come up with about five."

But Buchan confirmed there are more than a hundred.

"We do not have guidance counsellors in our schools anymore. It's been at least 10 years. That's a crime. How else are we supposed to get the youth to know what's going on out there," she asked.

Industrial arts or trades aren't generally taught in schools, either, as a springboard to related careers.

Director of technical services for the Nunavut Impact Review Board (NIRB) Tara Arko explained how the regulator reorganized itself two years ago and with that found an innovative way to transition high school graduates into its Cambridge Bay office.

"Being a very technical industry and technical department, we were seeing more and more barriers to youth being accessible right out of high school," said Arko.

"Youth should not have to go and get a four-year degree to come back home and be able to practice in the territory, to be participating in regulation, that kind of thing."

This Sedna marks the anniversary of the establishment of Nunavut as a territory April 1, 1999 and is the final piece of artwork crafted as part of the House of Commons' legacy projects to commemorate the 150th anniversary of Confederation, according to the news release.

The piece, measuring 65 cm by 84 cm, is a sculptural tympanum – the sculpture which fills a semi-circular or triangular decorative wall surface over an entrance, door or window, bounded by a lintel and arch.

This new sculpture will join a series of works already housed in the Foyer, dating back to 1978, according to the release.

The sculpture is to be displayed in West Block until it can take up permanent residence in the House of Commons Foyer following the rehabilitation

Scientific waste Project finds value in polar bear excrement

When you look back at the way polar bear monitoring has been done – drugging, collaring and tagging bears, or harassing them with helicopters – there has to be a better way, said hunter James Qitsualik. Inuit, he said, have always been against drugging and collaring bears.

"We wanted to find a noninvasive way, so to speak, to get the same information using different techniques," said Qitsualik, the former chair of the Gjoa Haven Hunters and Trappers Organization. He's now involved in a project underway with researchers from Queen's University that seems to have found that way.

And the answer is poop.

The BearWatch program started in Gjoa Haven in 201617, working with local Inuit to collect the excrement of polar bears while out on their hunts to be analyzed for indicators of population and environmental change.

"Building on developments emanating from Gjoa Haven, BearWatch works in collaboration with the GN and with collaborators in the GNWT and Alaska, as well as Danish partners in Greenland and Russian collaborators," said Queen's research scientist Peter van Coeverden de Groot.

"These international collaborators are collecting polar bear poop to derive non-invasive health and wellness estimators of their bears."

Along with van Coeverden de Groot, the project is led

by Stephen C. Lougheed and Graham Whitelaw, also of the Queen's University Department of Biology and Markus Dyck of the Government of Nunavut. They are developing non-invasive methods for monitoring polar bears using genomics and the traditional knowledge of hunters, like Qitsualik, to track and source their specimens.

Better together, chamber seeks members DeBeers Canada to present at June breakfast meeting

The Iqaluit Chamber of Commerce, resurrected in early 2017 after an inactive phase, is seeking to up its membership from 42 to 55 in 2019.

That's a far cry from the 18 members – eight of which were lifetime members – in early 2017. There are roughly 300 businesses in Iqaluit.

Already, the two-week membership drive has yielded three new members, with several pending payment of dues, said chamber president Ted Walker.

"As a long-term goal it would be very nice to have 100 per cent membership," said Walker.

"We're still developing our programming, activities and benefits we're able to offer.

"As things progress, hopefully we'll be able to attract more and more members."

Currently, there are a variety of reasons why people would want to join, Walker adds. One of those is the monthly chamber breakfast meetings – except in July and August – featuring speakers and topics pertinent to the local business community.

"Those seem to be really popular. A lot of our membership really enjoy a lot of the topics and the discussions that happen at those events," said Walker.

Actual dates depend on the availability of the speaker and May's has yet to be confirmed, but Walker is excited about the June breakfast meeting.

"We'll be organizing a breakfast meeting with DeBeers and asking them to talk to our membership about how they plan on integrating into the business community and what kind of support the local companies might be able to provide," said Walker.

Currently, DeBeers Canada is preparing to submit its project scope for the Chidliak diamond project, 120 km from Iqaluit, to Nunavut regulators.

"The next milestones are, we're going to put the team into the field in June and re-

open the main camp around the CH-6 kimberlite," said head of external and corporate affairs for DeBeers Canada Tom Ormsby.

"We're going to do a drill program on that this summer to enhance some of the knowledge that we have around the kimberlite. That drill program will probably take place July through September. Also during the summer, we're going to continue to enhance some of the collection of the environmental baseline data."

Ormsby says the company also plans on installing a wind measurement station.

"To try to understand what's the potential for wind power as a renewable energy supply," he said.

Community engagement is ongoing, for example at the Nunavut Mining Symposium earlier this month, where Ormsby explained the company's procurement process.

"That engagement will continue," he said.

Advocacy, Small Business Week, after-hours events and more The chamber also plays an advocacy role.

"At every one of our board meetings, we have one person on our board who is dedicated to keeping up-to-date with the city, one person who's dedicated to the GN and one person who's dedicated to the feds. At every meeting we have a quick news report to the rest of the board," said Walker.

The board then discusses whether to take action, a stance, reach out or provide comments.

"We want to start making more efforts to take public stances on things as we're getting going a little bit more on certain issues," said Walker, adding one issue the chamber was involved with was the City of Iqaluit's business bylaw revamp.

Walker says the chamber plans on regular quarterly after-hours business events.

"The opposite of the breakfast for people who have young kids, or something and can't always make it to a 7

a.m. breakfast meeting. These would be a little more casual, more of a networking event, but would feature one of our own members to give a casual introduction of themselves to the rest of the membership."

Small Business Week has been successful the past two years and will continue. A Shop Local initiative will be repeated for the second time.

Last year's was a bit of learning curve for the chamber,

retailers and the public.

"But by the end I think everyone understood what it was all about and was really well-received," said Walker.

As the chamber notes in its membership drive material:

"To be an effective chamber of commerce, we need to understand the common issues that all our members experience. As such, communication with our members is the key to our success."

Support mines that support Nunavummiut Northern News Services

Whether you notice it or not in your daily life, all reports show a glittering economic forecast for Nunavut.

Speaking at the Nunavut Mining Symposium, Bank of Canada governor Stephen Poloz noted that the territory is set for the strongest growth among all territories and provinces for 2019, at a rate of nine per cent.

"That's pretty spectacular stuff," Poloz said. "That's not some fiction, that's real."

Nunavut's senior economist Francois Picotte piled on the good news, noting the territory will see very high growth for the next four years.

All of this is thanks to mining, which is becoming such an economic force in Nunavut that it will surpass even government in its weight in the territorial economy.

You read that right and we expect this is blowing the minds of the local pundits who like to pile on the government for its role as Nunavut's top employer.

One caveat is that, for the moment, many workers continue to be southern imports. Inuit employment is not where it should be, but at least – compared with the stalled government numbers – Inuit employment is on the rise. That's

because employment with the mines is far more accessible to Inuit than government work is. The mines are located near smaller communities – DeBeers' Chidliak investment excepted – where Inuit are the bulk of the population and unlike almost every well-paid government job, the work does not require a degree.

Plus on-the-job training is available.

Government has a lot of progress to make in this area.

Picotte noted the effect of rising high school graduation rates in the communities near mines. Get a diploma, get a job. There are few better motivators to success than good prospects for decent employment and being surrounded by others so employed.

It's naive to think there are other industries that could have such a power for change in Nunavut. Other than government and mining, what do you have? Services, tourism, culture? They're all important, but pale in comparison to the economic benefits they can generate.

Therefore we must put in whatever effort we can muster to support responsible mining operations. This means bringing the Nunavut Land Use Plan to completion. As Picotte notes, the Conference Board of Canada's concern is that progress may be hindered by the uncertainty over land use.

And while we support progress that will bring more Nunavummiut out of a lower economic bracket, we must consider the side effects of a boom.

Just as growth is high, so is inflation. At three per cent, it's double the national rate and while workers can bear the increased cost of living, those living week-to-week may be pushed over the edge into destitution.

And with newfound prosperity, so comes the risk of social problems.

Managed properly and carefully with the correct supports in place, the risks can be outweighed by the benefits that come from honest, reliable work.

You may have heard that Ontario wants to change the slogan on its licence plates to "A Place to Grow," but all signs show Nunavut has far more potential. Let's build on the momentum and stay focused on making sure Nunavummiut are the ones who benefit.

Changing of the season Northern News Services

As the season is changing so quickly, we begin to think and plan for this happy time. We are now waking up to sunlight and soon we'll be going to bed in the sunlight as well. There is renewed energy and expectancy in the air.

We learn so much from our observance of the environment and the behaviour of the animals and we have also learned to apply this to our daily routines. As the weather changes, so do our thoughts and attitudes.

It is well known that actions speak louder than words and we have to be conscious of this as our children come of age. Whatever we do or say, they copy or mimic. When we are considerate and speak kind, gentle words, they want to be engaged and they try to be considerate and kind and speak gentle words.

We've heard many times that our actions and reactions and engagements are relative to everything about our existence. Our work affects our health; our habits, such as smoking and the use of substance and cannabis, affect our health and well-being.

Over a prolonged period of regular use, we soon find that we cannot go without it. This changes your mind, muscles, stomach, pancreas, liver, kidneys and lungs and certainly affects your will to stay on the job and so on.

Through all of these activities we are being watched by the little ones and they say, "If mom and dad can do this stuff, so can I".

One of two things happens as a child is growing and observing what is going on with mom and dad and the rest of the group.

Catching lots of seals

Sanirajak/Hall Beach Seal hunting has resumed in Hall Beach after a period when conditions weren't so conducive.

"Lately we're seeing lots of seals and catching lots of seals here," said Abe Qammaniq, vice-chair of the Hall Beach Hunters and Trappers Association. "There was a spell when there was no seals for a long time due to conditions like (it being) windy and high currents when it's full moon and new moon."

Jigging for trout and, perhaps, some char will begin soon as well, he said, noting that it felt like spring on a -12 C afternoon with little wind on April 9.

Hunting for other prey remains challenging due to the ongoing lack of snow, which makes snowmobiling difficult, according to Qammaniq.

"There's hardly any snow throughout this region ... so there's not that many caribou hunters at this time," he said, adding that he remains hopeful for more snow before spring sets in for good.

Easter egg hunting

Uqsuqtuuq/Gjoa Haven On April 22, residents of Gjoa Haven are invited to hunt for eggs – the chocolate kind.

In addition to the Easter egg hunt, the recreation department has planned an afternoon of games, such as relay races.

Cash prizes will be given out to the winners, said recreation co-ordinator Gibson Porter. Activities will be held along the oceanfront, he said.

Recreation staff are also sorting out details for the community's annual spring carnival, known as the Qavaavak Games.

Although dates aren't set yet, the festivities will be held in midMay, Porter noted.

Year of programming wraps up with igluvigaq-building workshop

Qikiqtarjuaq Nunavut Youth LEAP (Land-based Educational Adventure Programs) hosted an igluvigaq-building workshop led by Loasie Aliqatuqtuq in Qikiqtarjuaq the weekend of April 6.

"This was the final event of year 2018-2019 for Pisuktiit programming, that included many ski outings, some community first aid training and variety of other activities," said Celine Jaccard.

The Pisuktiit Project is a year-long program delivered under the umbrella of Nunavut Youth LEAP and is mainly for Qikiqtarjuaq youth.

"The program was funded by Quality of Life Secretariat and QIA (Qikiqtani Inuit Association). We are very grateful for their support," said Jaccard.

Painting self-love

Ikaluktutiak/Cambridge Bay The group Influencers Motivating Influencers made a stop in Cambridge Bay last week as part of a tour of Nunavut communities.

One of the activities was titled "SOS painting workshop". It attracted one male and nine female participants who wanted to learn about healing through art at the Kiilinik High School gym on the evening of April 8.

The year-long Influencers Motivating Influencers pan-Nunavut wellness tour is well underway, with Elberlyn, a Kanien'Keha, French Canadian and Dutch musician and artist, William Komaksiutiksak, also known as rapper Northern Knowledge, originally of Rankin Inlet and magician Brian Glow, conducting workshops and performing for communities.

Influencers Motivating Influencers, which addresses issues such as mental illness, anti-bullying, building leadership skills, goal-setting and boosting self-esteem.

"We painted what self-love looks like to each of us and we all shared stories and advice on how to love ourselves. It was awesome!"

The motivational group is scheduled to be in Sanikiluaq this week.

Art for healing and strengthening youth voices

Mittimatalik/Pond Inlet Pond Inlet artist Jamesie Itulu was the first invited guest in a project run by Queen's University student Kaitlyn Gillelan.

Itulu taught nine Grade 7/8 girls some drawing basics.

"I asked them what they wanted to draw. We made a short list," said Itulu.

The girls chose to draw mitts.

"I taught them how to draw shapes, to make the sketch of it, step by step."

After the mitts were done, Itulu walked them through building an inuksuk on paper.

Gillelan, who first spent time in Pond Inlet during the summer of 2015 as a volunteer peer health educator, is back on an OceanPath Fellowship through the Coady Institute.

"Our idea is to use art as a medium for self-expression, to go through the journey of strengthening the voices of youth.

This will take shape through freestyle, workshops and a cultural revitalization component of connecting youth to pieces of historical art from within their own community," according to Gillelan's biography.

While Itulu was the first guest, there will be more from the community working with the girls.

"We just started to incorporate the guest speakers because the focus was first building trust with the group of girls and deconstructing the meaning of art," said Gillelan.

"Next week will be a pretty big week for us in regards to the push on programming surrounding positive well-being. We are collaborating with an Indigenous community in the Kimberly region of Australia, a community of 500, to do a suicide prevention campaign – writing letters of hope and strength sending home the message 'that no matter where you are in the world you are never alone' as Pond and this community are literally on the opposite sides of the world."

Gillelan says the girls meet every Tuesday and Thursday and are now looking to add Fridays.

Inuk heart surgeon 'one to watch', says Queen's University alumni association

Canada's first Inuk heart surgeon Donna May Kimmaliardjuk received the One to Watch Award at the Queen's University Alumni Association Awards Gala April 6, one of 11 awards given to outstanding graduates.

Before moving on to the University of Calgary, where she attained her medical degree, Kimmaliardjuk earned her bachelor of science degree at Queen's University in 2011.

"These recipients are trailblazers and community builders," alumni association president Jeremy Mosher stated on the association's website.

"Through volunteerism or their jobs, they have made a significant impact on Queen's, their cities and the country."

During her time at Queen's, Kimmaliardjuk served as president of the Queen's Native Students Association.

Kimmaliardjuk is now in her fifth year of six in a residency at the University of Ottawa Heart Institute.

The One to Watch award is presented annually to a recent alumnus/alumna, fewer than 10 years out of either an undergraduate or graduate program, who is making significant contributions in their field of endeavour, setting an example for future Queen's alumni to follow, according to the association.

Kimmaliardjuk previously received the youth Indspire award in 2017 and she is quoted as saying, "Harness inspiration to shape your dreams. Pursue education to bring your dreams into focus. Use your dedication, passion and the support of others to bring your dreams within reach."

Though raised and schooled in the south, Kimmaliardjuk has family in several Nunavut communities, including Chesterfield Inlet and Rankin Inlet, among others.

It was a real joy and honour to watch this performer, Philip Ugjuk of Rankin Inlet. He is hearing impaired but learned how to dance at a very young age. He learned by watching his parents and others to drum dance and do the pihiit.

He really enjoyed himself and when he danced the pihiit and drum he really put his whole body and soul to his performances. He had a great time. Quana for giving us hope Philip. It was an honour to meet you.

The 2019 drum dance festival was held in Cambridge Bay April 8 to 11, with approximately 60 to 70 participants dancing the pihiit of their ancestors.

Youth to develop community initiatives Federal program to help address social and economic barriers face by young Northerners

The four Inuit regions are getting $660,000 to help address the significant social and economic inequalities faced by Northern youth, which create barriers to developing the knowledge and skills needed to support their communities, from a new federal program called Expedition to Community (E2C).

The Students on Ice Foundation will take the helm on E2C. "Students on Ice is thrilled to support this youth-led initiative," Students on Ice founder and president Geoff Green stated in a media release.

"Building on nearly 20 years of working with youth and partners across the North through our educational expeditions and outreach initiatives, we embrace the opportunity to further our support of Inuit youth in developing the knowledge and leadership skills to benefit their communities."

Students on Ice, a charitable foundation, leads educational expeditions to the Arctic and Antarctic for international high school and university students, including Nunavut students.

The foundation will work with a core group of youth leaders ages

15 to 30 in five Northern communities – two in Nunavut, east and west – to engage youth in leading service activities that address the issues, opportunities and needs of Northern communities.

"Canada Service Corps (the funder) responds to community needs through innovative programs like Expedition to Community. Such programs enable youth in rural and remote areas to enrich their communities and build a better Canada. I cannot wait to see the growing impact that young leaders have across the country," stated Pontiac Quebec MP Will Amos, who made the announcement April 8.

E2C is intended to support the development of project management and leadership skills, enabling youth to initiate and lead meaningful and sustainable community initiatives, according to the release. Prime Minister Justin Trudeau announced the design phase of the Canada Service Corps in January 2018, earmarking $105 million to March 2021 for the Canada-wide program.

"The result will be a cohort of youth with new leadership skills, entrepreneurial experience and an enhanced sense of community service," the release states.

Silver lining for Eekeeluak Avalak Cambridge Bay wrestler wins silver medal at U17/U19 Canadian Wrestling Championships

There's a wonderful thing about being from Nunavut and going to a national championship.

No one takes you seriously until you beat them and even then, they still don't take you seriously.

Eekeeluak Avalak of Cambridge Bay was in that situation at the U17/U19 Canadian Wrestling Championships in Fredericton, N.B., on April 6 and very nearly rode it right to the top.

The 15-year-old copped himself a silver medal in the boys' U17 55-kg weight class, dropping a tight 6-3 decision to Logan Smith of Ontario in the final. Had it not been for a couple of small mistakes, the result could have been different, according to his coach, Chris Crooks.

"It was a little bit of inexperience on his part but it was a good match," he said. "He had some errors but they were small."

Avalak had the benefit of a first-round bye, meaning he began his road to the podium in the round-of-16 against Logan Kennedy of Alberta, which he won by technical superiority, or by mercy, 15-5. Any match which reaches a 10-point spread at any point results in an immediate victory for the wrestler in front.

Next up was Elliot Merriman of Ontario and Avalak didn't need points to win that one as he won by pinfall at 3:59 to advance to the semifinal.

Crooks said it was fun to watch Avalak keep his opponents off-guard.

"I know Eekee's opponents went into those matches thinking he wasn't prepared," he said. "They looked at him and they weren't expecting him to be as tough as he was."

Avalak's semifinal opponent was Zachary Ortencio of Ontario and it was another dominant performance as Avalak won by technical superiority again, 13-0, to advance to the gold medal match against Smith, where his luck would run out.

"The Ontario kid in the semifinal was a bit wiser but he still didn't take Eekee seriously," said Crooks. "They were taking him seriously by the final."

In reflection of Avalak's result, Crooks said a medal was an outside chance but the realistic result was getting to the quarterfinal at least.

"I thought he would get a top-five and maybe catching a medal with a good draw," he said.

In addition to the nationals, Avalak had a chance to try out for the Canadian team that will be heading to the Cadet Pan-American Games in Mexico later this year. He didn't make the team but it was all about the experience, said Crooks.

"He lost all four of his matches but it was a good experience for him," he said. "The difference between the trials and the nationals was everyone was first-year U19 and the weight classes were a bit different. I asked him if he wanted some more matches and he said sure. We talked about it and he knew it was going to be stiff competition."

To put into perspective just how tough Avalak's trials matches were, all four of his opponents have wrestled in events outside Canada, including one who has already fought 50 matches so far in 2019.

"That one kid has fought more matches in one weekend than Eekee has fought all year," said Crooks. "He's wrestling every single weekend."

The next big event for Avalak will be the Western Canada Summer Games in Swift Current, Sask., this coming August.

Tournament time for Toonik Tyme Iqaluit The 54th annual Toonik Tyme Festival is well underway in the capital and one of the big events of the festival has already happened.

The Toonik Tyme Cup senior men's hockey tournament wrapped up on April 14 with 12 teams from Iqaluit, Rankin Inlet, Pangnirtung and Cape Dorset playing in two divisions, all looking to win one of the final big tournaments of the season.

Hockey camp time Ikpiarjuk/Arctic Bay Hockey players in Arctic Bay got the chance to hone their skills on the ice at the Tununirusiq Arena earlier this month with someone who knows what it's like to play in the National Hockey League.

Doug Sulliman, who played more than 600 games in the NHL with the New York Rangers, Hartford Whalers, New Jersey Devils and Philadelphia Flyers, was in the community from April 11 to 15 to work with players from seven and up – including adults – for four days of instruction on the ice followed by a school visit on April 15. Thomas Levi, Arctic Bay's recreation co-ordinator, said Sulliman stayed in the community for an extra day so he could be part of the Qamutik Cup opening ceremonies.

More tournament time Ikpiarjuk/Arctic Bay Speaking of the Qamutik Cup, the 2019 edition of the senior men's hockey tournament gets going this evening, April 15, with five teams scheduled to take part from Arctic Bay, Hall Beach, Pond Inlet, Iglulik and Clyde River.

Thomas Levi said he was finalizing on April 12 what he hoped would be a charter for players to make it into the community in order to play.

Games are scheduled each evening at the Tununirusiq Arena for the duration of the Nunavut Quest, which is being run from Pond Inlet to Arctic Bay this year.

Levi also said there's an officiating clinic during the tournament and that all came together following a conference call between the communities taking part.

He said only one community – Iglulik – had a certified official and the goal is to have at least one certified official from each community so future tournaments can draw from a pool of people.

Volleyball teams share the spoils Gjoa Haven and Naujaat win titles at Gold Diggers Volleyball Tournament

Big money and big bragging rights in the Kitikmeot region were up for grabs on the volleyball court earlier this month.

The Gold Diggers Volleyball Tournament brought together a total of 16 teams – eight men's and eight women's – from Taloyoak, Naujaat and Gjoa Haven, the host community and when the dust settled, Gjoa Haven and Naujaat left with the spoils.

The Serve-ivors of Gjoa Haven took the women's title thanks to a 3-2 win in sets over The A-Team in an exciting final that literally went back and forth, according to tournament organizer Flora Arqviq, who also happened to play on the championship team.

"We won the first, they won the second, we won the third, they won the fourth and we won the fifth," she said.

The top four teams in each division ended up making the semifinal with each team getting a three-game guarantee. The Gjoa Haven Lightnings won the third-place game to take home the bronze medal and a cheque for $2,000.

The reward for the Serve-ivors was a winner's share of $5,000 and the gold medals while The A-Team won silver and $3,000.

On the men's side, Team Naujaat took the title and $5,000 back to the Kivalliq region thanks to their win over Team Taluk of Taloyoak in the final. The Warriors of Naujaat ended up third to win the bronze medal and $2,000.

"The teams from Naujaat told us that they had more fun playing in our tournament than in the LGM (Laura Gauthier Memorial)," said Arqviq. "That was really nice to hear."

Getting the prize money and medals together took almost a year's worth of fund-

raising, said Arqviq.

"We ran six bingos and two bazaars," she said.

Their efforts paid off as more than $20,000 was raised for the tournament.

This was the seventh year that the tournament has been held in Gjoa Haven and Arqviq is hopeful it will become a bigger event on the Volleyball Nunavut calendar with the ultimate goal of being part of the Nunavut Open Volleyball Tour (NOVT) – the newly-created initiative by Volleyball Nunavut to help determine the teams that will play in the Nunavut Open Championships next month in Iqaluit.

The tour includes the LGM in Rankin Inlet and the Iqaluit Open as part of the tour but there was no stop in the Kitikmeot region, something Scott Schutz, Volleyball Nunavut's executive director, hopes will change going forward.

"I'm hoping it will become the Kitikmeot

region event," he said. "The challenge is with the dates being so close to the Nunavut Open, how would we get a team there in time?"

Schutz said the board of Volleyball Nunavut will be sitting down to talk about how to make it fit in the schedule and that conversation would most likely include the boards of the LGM and Iqaluit Open.

"Right now, timing is the issue," he said.

"We've already been preparing for the Nunavut Open for two months so getting a team from the Kitikmeot region in April would be tough to do.

"The scenario could look like doing the Kitikmeot region first, then the Kivalliq, then the Baffin region but that would involve dates being adjusted. We just need to get everyone around the table and develop a season because it's obvious people want to play volleyball.

"Our job is to help them play."

Bob Cole's 50-year career in hockey play-by-play came to an end on April 6 as he called his final game: the Toronto Maple Leafs against the Montreal Canadiens.

I always wondered why he didn't get the chance to call curling in addition to hockey.

Not like he wouldn't know what was going on. Maybe the best thing that happened was that he didn't because Vic Rauter wouldn't have become the king of curling play-by-play.

Overshadowed in all of the sentimental thoughts of Cole's final game was Montreal's Ryan Poehling, who announced his arrival to the NHL by scoring a hat trick in his very first game. He even scored the shootout winner just for good measure and got the standing ovation due for any rookie who makes a debut like he did. Cole's call on Poehling's shootout goal was vintage Cole. You should

listen to it because I'm terrible at describing greatness.

There will be many more play-by-play people who will fill the shoes and someone will replace Cole in the booth but no one will ever replace the way he did it. His final words after Montreal won went like this: "That's all she wrote."

Bob Cole wrote a soundtrack that will last forever and perhaps the good thing about living in the age that we do is that technology will allow us to go back and re-live Cole's greatest hits.

At least I don't have to blame my dad for that.

Critiquing of Nunavut's education system 'We leave it to the bureaucrats and the bureaucrats are out of touch'

The last time Nunavummiut heard from retired teacher Nick Newbery was at a 2015 ceremony, when he donated 3,600 photographs to the Government of Nunavut.

Now he's written Never a Dull Moment: Forty Years in Education in Canada's North (and in a few other places), a 192-page autobiography recounting historic events, as well as his take on Nunavut's education system.

Newbery had several reasons for writing his collection of personal anecdotes, which takes the reader from Europe, including Northern Ireland, to Toronto, then various Nunavut communities – Taloyoak, Pangnirtung, Qikiqtarjuaq and Iqaluit.

"I'd had two surgeries last summer and I wasn't allowed to do anything, so I thought, 'What do I do with the summer?'" said Newberry.

"Since I do quite a bit of writing, this seemed like a natural thing to do. It was on my bucket list."

And, he says, the North was good to him.

Retired Nunavut educator Nick Newbery shares his thoughts about Nunavut's education system in Never a Dull Moment: Forty Years in Education in Canada's North (and in a few other places), which he will launch at Iqaluit's Arctic Ventures Friday and Saturday. of things you wouldn't normally get to do down south – whether you're in health, journalism or education,

or whatever – and I was able to do things in education I found rewarding," he said.

"But I was also appalled by the system which was not serving the needs of many kids I met. It was either disorganized and/or more recently trying to impose a foreign – Alberta – curriculum on a bunch of rural native children."

Newbery adds that unless you make the education cross-cultural, it won't work.

"I did that for 17 years in Iqaluit and it worked. I've known other teachers who have done it and it worked," he said.

"But we don't seem to do it as an education department."

The photographer and author says he wanted to express his ideas and have other people read them.

"We don't discuss education very much. We leave it to the bureaucrats and the bureaucrats are out of touch.

(They) can't sit in their ivory towers and tell everybody how to do things.

They need to talk to the teachers on the front line," he says.

Newbery is further appalled by the territory's graduation rate.

"That's telling you something.

They're walking and why are they walking? There's lots of reasons, but one of the major reasons would be that the curriculum is totally unsuitable. The other thing we need to do is to orientate new teachers so that they know what they're getting into before they get there," he said.

"Thirdly, we need to bring parents into the picture more and make them realize, 'Look, you've got to push. You've got to encourage.' And I think the DEAs (district education authorities) could do a lot of that for us."

Newbery realizes his book will not change the world.

"But I don't find anybody really writing about education and criticizing it, or critiquing it. The teachers' association – which is a neutral body and can criticize government, which individual teachers can't do – I don't find says a lot to really inform the public and criticize the government and list options," he said.

"So what are we left with? The DEAs really represent their locale and they don't get together very much. So, I wrote a book. I wanted people to think about these things."

He says he tried to make the book fun and interesting and provide real-life examples of what could be done. He wants Nunavummiut to read Never a Dull Moment.

"It's their children. It's their system. If people don't start thinking and discussing and getting a little annoyed about it, it's not going to change," said Newbery.

The book will be available for purchase at Arctic Ventures in Iqaluit, or it can be ordered from Newbery himself.
