Rare catch in Kugluktuk Shark caught in nets normally found in the Pacific Ocean

In his 73 years on earth Kugluktuk's John Kapakatoak had never seen a shark in person. That all changed Sept. 16 when a routine check on his seal nets yielded a 6-foot shark that weighed more than 150 pounds.

"When I saw it at first I thought it was a young beluga," said Kapakatoak. "But when I pulled the rock off and pulled them up with a Honda to see what it is I could see it was a shark. I've never seen one before. That's the first time I've seen a shark my whole life."

Kapakatoak, who has been hunting and trapping full time since retiring from his job at the hamlet seven years ago, said he immediately took samples of the animal to be sent for testing in Winnipeg.

"I don't know anything about the shark," he said.

Nigel Hussey, professor of Integrative Biology at the University of Windsor, has identified the shark as a salmon shark based on images which were shared with him by the Department of Fisheries and Oceans.

However, he will wait until the samples can be examined before confirming his assessment.

Given that the sharks rely on salmon for food, it is extremely unusual to see such a species in Arctic waters.

"The distribution of salmon sharks certainly doesn't normally extend up into that region. It's a very unique capture event. What that means, I don't know," he said.

Hussey told Nunavut News that there are several factors which could have contributed to the salmon shark ending up in Kapakatoak's nets. With sea tem-

peratures rising, Pacific salmon are becoming more common in Northern waters. This phenomenon could potentially be attracting predators such as sharks, Hussey said.

"My impression is that this salmon shark is either a one in a million event and the animal got lost or was carried away in a current," said Hussey, noting that other that other species of sharks, including great whites, have been tracked further north than usual in recent years.

"Or potentially these species are moving further northwards.

Obviously that could relate to warming sea surface temperatures, which we know are happening. Or two, it might just be directly tied to where their prey is."

The shark was dead by the time Kapakatoak pulled it out along with three seals which got caught in the nets. Unlike the seals which don't put up much of a fight, the shark was really twisted in his nets from trying to fight its way out.

By the time Kapakatoak reached shore the news had travelled throughout the community and more than a hundred people came down to greet him and take pictures with his catch.

"I came in and there was lots of people along my boat because people had never seen a shark before," he said. "I've never heard of nobody report a shark before."

While he waits for the results of his samples, Kapakatoak said his wife plans to use the skin to try and make leather, while he hopes to boil the skull to mount it on his wall.

"I'm going to keep the head with the teeth. They're really sharp."

Kapakatoak has already sent samples to be tested to try and identify what kind of shark it is. should not be afraid of salmon sharks as they are harmless to humans. If another shark happens to be caught, he urged hunters and trappers to share samples of the animal with local fisheries officers so they could be studied.

"If people do encounter unusual animals such as these sharks make sure those encounters are reported because they are extremely valuable," he said. "It's cool and its important for understanding climate change."

High speed internet now fully available Northwestel disputes SSi Micro claim that it doesn't have access to new backbone

Northwestel announced this week it has completed its work to make 15 megabits per second (Mbps) internet and LTE wireless service available to Nunavut's 25 communities.

"Northwestel is thrilled to announce that our Tamarmik Nunaliit network is fully connected and delivering high-speed internet across Nunavut," stated vice president of business markets Paul Gillard.

"This achievement in network technology will help bolster the quality of life for Nunavummiut through increased connectivity for schools and health centres and enhanced access for residents and businesses."

The federal department of Innovation, Science and Economic Development (ISED) invested $49.9 million in September 2017 into a Northwestel-built backbone. The company, a direct subsidiary of Bell Canada, said at the time it would itself invest $73 million.

A backbone is the main network that carries all the information at high speeds, which in Nunavut is satellite-based rather than through fibre-optic cable.

At the time, Northwestel only serviced four Nunavut communities.

"Residents in Arviat, Cambridge Bay, Iqaluit and Rankin Inlet can order 15 Mbps internet service through Northwestel while those in all other Nunavut communities have access to fixed wireless Internet service through Bell.

The high-speed Internet services from Northwestel and Bell are offered at the same price, offer speeds up to six times faster than what was previously available and include 100 gigabytes of data usage," according to the release.

Dean Proctor of Qiniq/SSi Micro told Nunavut News in 2017 that it was great news

that backbone technology is being funded, as previously investments were only directed to "last mile" technology – which is the technology that gets internet to individual homes and offices.

Nunavut's backbone was previously solely fed by Telesat Canada satellites Anik F2 and Anik F3. Qiniq, which already offered service to the territory's 25 communities, have since added 4G-LTE capabilities. This was possible via $35 million from another federal program called Connecting Canadians, which SSi received in late 2015. SSi invested $75 million.

The new backbone is fed via Telesat's Kaband high-throughput satellites, which provides up to 20 times more internet capacity than previously available, according to the Northwestel news release.

Part of the agreement with the federal government was that competing service providers, such as SSi, would have access to the new capacity.

"After nearly two years of talks with Northwestel, SSi has not been able to negotiate access to this government-subsidized capacity," stated SSi manager of communications David Veniot by email.

But Northwestel says that's not true.

"On the contrary, other service providers have 100 per cent access to the open-access Tamarmik Nunaliit broadband network in all 25 Nunavut communities. SSI Micro knows full well that as an established wholesale provider, Northwestel cannot legally disclose information related to third party network access discussions," stated the company's director of communications Andrew Anderson by email.

Meanwhile, Telesat has stated it plans on deploying its LEO (low earth orbit) constellation by 2021, with the aim of delivering fiberlike broadband services anywhere on Earth.

Inuit Tapiriit Kanatami (ITK) launched Qanuippitaa? a national Inuit health survey that will include Inuit of all ages from every community in Inuit Nunangat, while holding its annual general meeting in Rankin Inlet on Sept.

11 and 12.

Qanuippitaa? echoes the names of the health surveys that operated in Nunavik in 2004 and 2017 and in the Inuvialuit Settlement Region, Nunavut and Nunatsiavut in 2007-2008, with the logo containing four distinct elements to reflect the collaboration between the four Inuit regions.

Qanuippitaa? is the only health survey controlled and led by Inuit, stated information from the ITK. It's being developed and carried out in partnership with the four Inuit regional organizations, Inuvialuit Regional Corp., Nunavut Tunngavik Inc., Makivik Corp. Nunatsiavut Government, Inuit Circumpolar Council Canada, Pauktuutit Inuit Women of Canada and the National Inuit Youth Council.

The Government of the Northwest Territories, Government of Nunavut, Nunavik Regional Board of Health and Social Services and Labrador Grenfell Health are also survey partners.

Qanuippitaa? is a permanent health survey, with federal funding being announced in 2018 of $82 million over 10 years, with $6 million a year ongoing.

Data collection is expected to begin in 2021 and take place every five years.

Another goal of this project is to provide Inuit with training and resources to conduct

their own surveys on an ongoing basis to help ensure Inuit have greater control over research.

It will also provide survey- and researchrelated expertise and jobs that will stay in Inuit communities.

ITK president Natan Obed said Inuit are going to own the data produced by the project and make the decisions on how the survey takes place, how the data is summarized and how it's communicated back to Inuit communities.

He said in the past, Inuit have often had to partner with southern-based academic institutions and go through southern-based processes to find out about their own health – but this Inuit-led initiative will, hopefully, lead to greater capacity for Inuit in working with academia and owning and controlling their own research interests.

"I've spent my career as someone who works on behalf of Inuit and often the way in which we make headway with the federal government, provinces and territories is by using information (data)," said Obed.

"Often the data is collected by the federal government or independent researchers and gets summarized through their lens and then we'd have to use that information to talk about the Inuit condition – whether it's the rate of cancer or our mental health – so we've often relied on other institutions to be able to tell our story.

"For me, personally, to be a part of creating a sustainable national Inuit health survey where we can rely on the summary data that comes out about our physical health, mental health, contaminants, diet and food security – and to know we've worked together across the four Inuit regions to come-up with the questions, then do

the surveys in the language of choice to the Inuit who are participating and then to be able to have control of that data and summarize it – gives me a huge hope that we are going to be able to talk more definitively about our social conditions than we ever have been before.

"That will allow us to work on policy change in a much more specific way, because it gives us more information we can rely on when we go to whoever we need to advocate or partner with to be able to improve conditions for Inuit."

Obed said the survey is a large undertaking and the partners have taken a cautious approach.

He said the established working group has gone through a whole host of different scenarios on when they want to do the national project.

"2021 was a cautious marker right from the beginning. We got the money in 2018 so, for a lot of people, waiting three years to start a survey might be too long.

"But, for us, we had to start this from scratch and we want to do this right.

"In 2007/2008, the International Polar Year health survey went to three different regions.

There have been two iterations of a Nunavik survey and the name Qanuippitaa? comes from that particular survey – so we have some expertise and some experience in all the different challenges and barriers to undertaking these surveys.

"We're structuring this survey in a way that will give us the best possible success and we're partnering with public governments to ensure the data that we're trying to collect is something that is a shared hope of both government and Inuit."

Obed said ITK wants the survey data to be utilized by governments and respected by all,

He said they're very cognizant of the sample size and all the different methodology they're going to undertake to ensure the health survey data and summary data are both defensible and respected.

"In the previous iterations of the survey, especially the International Polar Year survey, the random sample size was about 15 to 18 per cent of the Inuit adult population over 18.

Parks Canada expands visits to ship following community feedback

A group of elders had the chance to visit the wreck of Sir John Franklin's HMS Terror last month as an extension of Parks Canada's Guardian program.

The visit followed a previous trip by Elders, youth and Guardians to Terror Bay in 2018, when they accompanied Parks Canada partner, Know History, as part of the Franklin Inuit Oral History Project – collecting Inuit Traditional Knowledge on the Franklin Expedition and the Netsilik region.

According to Tamara Tarasoff, project manager for the wrecks of HMS Erebus and HMS Terror National Historic Site, the trip was such a positive experience for both the elders and Guardians to share their knowledge that the Gjoa Haven Hunters and Trappers Association Board, the Guardians and Elders recommended a similar event occur again this year.

"Acting on feedback from Guardians and Elders collected after the 2018 Guardian season, it was requested that future Guardian training incorporate elders into the program," stated Tarasoff in an email to Nunavut News.

"And in keeping with the principles of Inuit traditional knowledge, it was decided that an elder-Guardianyouth field trip would take place at

the conclusion of the 2019 Guardian training program."

This year's field trip ended up coinciding with the early phase of the underwater archeology team's research operations at the wreck site of HMS Terror. As a result it was decided the field trip would travel to Terror Bay in order to have the opportunity to visit the underwater archeology team aboard the Parks Canada research vessel, David Thompson.

The elders, Guardians and youth travelled to the Terror Bay Guardian Camp on Aug. 7, where they camped and engaged in knowledge-sharing for three days and two nights. Ten Guardians, seven Elders and one youth participated.

On the final day, the group boarded the RV David Thompson in Terror Bay. "The Elders and Guardians were invited on board to visit the ship and also to share their knowledge of the Franklin Expedition and the areas surrounding Terror Bay," said Tarasoff.

Over the course of the morning, the visitors were given a tour of the vessel and met the ship's crew and Parks Canada's Underwater Archeology Team members – including underwater archeology assistant Jonathan Puqiqnak from Gjoa Haven.

They also had the opportunity to try some of the equipment used by team members to explore the wreck.

Given the success of recent visits, Tarasoff said it is likely there will be more in the future.

Deliver on Arctic framework Northern News Services

If we can find one word to describe the Liberal government's 11th hour Arctic and Northern Policy Framework, it would have to be 'ambitious.'

Unveiled Sept. 10, the day before Prime Minister Justin Trudeau called a federal election, the first list of objectives identified in the framework says it all: End poverty; eradicate hunger; eliminate homelessness and overcrowding; reduce suicides.

That is some list and that's only the first four objectives noted in the item "Goal 1." There are eight other goals in this framework, each with their own list of objectives.

Forgive us for seeming incredulous but we have only been reporting on these issues for the past 20 years.

Poverty, hunger, overcrowding, suicide – our pages are full of stories on these issues week after week, year after year.

They are all painful to note – and damning. But the Liberals – and Conservative governments before and after them – have had years to deliver policies to alleviate these problems. Yet these more or less are the statistics in Nunavut today: 14,888 Nunavummiut recieved

social assistance in 2018, 800 more than in 2009.

Food is up to three times more expensive than in the rest of Canada.

The annual rate of tuberculosis is 290 times higher than with Canadian-born non-Indigenous people.

Nunavut, by far, has the highest suicide rate in the country at 71 deaths per 100,000 people.

Sad and shocking figures for sure but nothing new. The framework aims to deliver on its goals through 2030. The document certainly sings the right tune. It acknowledges the lower life expectancy among Inuit and other Indigenous groups, the high rates of violence and addiction, the Herculean effort required to bring the Northern standard of living up to a level comparable to the rest of Canada.

The goals to combat these problems – better housing, more infrastructure, for example – are straight-

forward and specific. But identifying the problems and committing them to paper is the easy part. It's the fulfillment part that causes us to be skeptical.

These are things any government, whether Liberal, Conservative or otherwise, ought to commit to but for a variety of reasons none have made significant headway. Federal governments have many priorities and the North is far away and sparsely populated.

Not to be cynical but it's easy to kick the can down the road when there are only a handful of seats in the House of Commons the Northern regions can deliver. The card Northerners have left to play is the pure shame of their predicament.

It ought to be intolerable to boast of Canada's achievements in education, progress and prosperity when the situation in the North is so starkly different.

Now that Nunavummiut have this document, it must be held in the face of every federal MP, governorgeneral, or any other high-ranking southerner who steps foot into Nunavut. Canada needs to deliver-- that is the message. And it begins with this federal election.

Support program offers life-changing guidance Northern News Services

We note that as each calendar year comes to a close there are some changes and expectations that come with this.

In the Northwest Territories several people have put their names forward in hopes of being elected to their legislative assembly as representatives of their people. There is the federal election that has caught our eye as well and hopefully the new leader will live up to a leadership with integrity and inclusiveness.

We in Nunavut are aware of these events but our main focus is ensuring our people are given every opportunity in maintaining their livelihood, housing, employment and medical care. We also want our people to know and understand that programs and services in all the social realms are available and accessible.

Those who are in positions of authority and facilitators must keep in mind their respect for others, relationships and caring for people.

The fact that you were recognized for your skills, awareness and willingness places a huge responsibility on your shoulders and there is an expectancy that you will carry out your duties in a manner both timely and mature.

finding ways in regaining control through positive options in living a good lifestyle.

The 28-day program held at the retreat several kilometres outside the community is active and is looking forward to providing another four intake cycle beginning in October and will carry on into the spring of 2020 and beyond. There is a group of dedicated individuals who will facilitate the program with support groups engaged in this lifechanging session. Those who sign up have made up their minds to make a change while the facilitators give solid foundation in adopting positive changes in attitude and effort.

In many of my submissions I have mentioned how everything is relative and that where there is an action there is a reaction.

As we move forward in hopes of stability, growth and engagement we need to know and understand that we need to be balanced.

This feeling of balance shows that our mental, physical, emotional and spiritual domains are connected and function in unison.

Clean bill of health for Rankin pets Animals appear healthy and content during health team's visit

The animal health team from the Winnipeg-based Tuxedo Animal Hospital just travelled to Rankin Inlet for its annual pet clinic in the community.

While all was reported well with the health of the Rankin pet population by veterinarian Dr. Jonas Watson, the team did have to set up a hospital zone when one furry patient arrived with a menace known well to dog lovers.

Watson said the team comes to Rankin and does a lot of vaccination to prevent diseases like parvo virus.

In fact, he said, this is the first trip during which they actually had to treat a case of parvo virus.

"An owned puppy was presented to us very ill with vomiting and diarrhea," said Watson.

"A test confirmed the dog had parvo virus, so we immediately hospitalized it, placed it on intravenous fluids and began administering medications.

"Slowly, but surely, through the week she got better and we were happy to send her home with her very grateful family."

Watson said the team did about

30 surgeries while in Rankin and had about 50 medical appointments booked.

He said the vast majority of the surgeries were spays and neuters, but they also did a couple of eyelid surgeries on some dogs that had problems with eyelids rolling-in against their corneas.

"With most of the vaccinations we did the animals had already been spayed or neutered, in most cases by us in previous years.

"I'm always impressed with how fit and in-shape the dogs are up here.

They have fairly active outdoor lifestyles and, as such, they tend to be leaner than their counterparts down south.

"Similarly, a lot of dogs up here have very clean teeth, which is probably due to some nutritional differences in the way dogs are fed up here versus in the city.

"I was impressed this trip by generally how healthy most of the animals were that we saw and, in those ways, it was a fairly typical visit."

During the year before the next clinic in Rankin, Watson reminds owners to keep feeding their pets well, make sure they get plenty of exercise, de-worm appropriately and make sure they're booked every year

the animal health team comes to visit.

He said the facility in Rankin provided by John Hicks and Page Burt meets every need the team has.

"It's extremely convenient, there's lots of space and we're able to set-up a full surgical suite on one side and a full exam room on the other.

"It meets our needs as well as any.

It's comparable to many vet clinics I've worked at down south, so we're very happy and feel very fortunate, that Page and John are able to afford us that space."

When it comes to possible pet owners, Watson said they need to be committed to a dog or cat for 10 or 15 years.

He said they need to understand medical issues could arise that may require veterinarian attention, which could mean an unscheduled trip down south.

"The basic needs for a pet include vaccination, de-worming, basic grooming and good food and there are costs associated with pet ownership in order to ensure that they lead good, healthy lives.

"It's not something to enter into lightly. Puppies are not toys. They become dogs and dogs require years and years of love and attention."

Mandal, of Iqaluit, is a doctor of medicine student in the Queen's University accelerated route to medical school program. She continues to develop competencies in Inuktitut to better connect with future patients, according to the news release.

The award pays tribute to Gauthier's contribution to the establishment of an independent energy corporation for Nunavut before her sudden passing in 2000, according to the news release.

Launched in 2001, the $5000 scholarship is presented annually to a promising student pursuing post-secondary education.

"QEC applauds Ms. Mandal's achievements and wishes her continued success as she enters her third year at Queen's University," stated QEC president Bruno Pereira.

"Her dedication to higher education is commendable. She is setting herself up to accomplish great things."

In and out of hot water

Whale Cove/Arviat The hamlet of Whale Cove finally had its boil water advisory lifted on Aug. 30.

Whale had been under the advisory since Dec. 13, 2018.

While Whale was set free from the boil water advisory, another Kivalliq community quickly took its place holding the kettle when Arviat was placed under an advisory on Sept. 9.

Arviat residents are being told to boil their water for at least one full minute before drinking, brushing their teeth, cooking, washing fruit and vegetables, preparing baby formulas or making juice or ice cubes.

As of press time, the community was under the boil water advisory until further notice.

Stable condition

Nunavut Nunavut Senator Dennis Patterson was medevaced to Ottawa from Iqaluit this past Thursday, Sept. 12.

As of press time, Patterson remained in hospital and was listed as being in stable condition and in good spirits.

The reason for his medevac and hospital stay has not been released.

For the love of science KSEC hosts 20th annual Kivalliq Science/Culture Camp in Baker

Students and teachers swooped into Baker Lake recently to participate in the annual Kivalliq Science/ Culture Camp in Baker from.

The Sept. 4 to 9 event was sponsored by the Kivalliq Science Educators' Community (KSEC) and drew a total of 32 students, seven teachers and three elders (Jennifer Eeviuk, Susan Toolooktook and Timothy Eeviuk) — with every Kivalliq community being represented.

The theme to this year's camp was Rocks and Minerals.

Victor Sammurtok School teacher Glen Brocklebank of Chesterfield Inlet said a geologist from Agnico Eagle Mines (AEM) visited the camp to support the teachers and sections in first aid and the Global Positioning System (GPS) were also presented to the students.

He said the camp was exciting this year, with only one of the 32 students having attended a previous camp.

"It started off on a Wednesday afternoon with a number of people saying they weren't sure if they wanted to be here and, by Monday, they were saying science camp should

never end," said Brocklebank.

"The GPS section seemed to be a favourite of the students because it was really practical and handson, but some of them said geology was the best part and a few others preferred the section on the first-aid scenarios.

"It really helped that we had fantastic weather this year – a little bit of snow and bugs, but no rain – as I woke up every morning wearing my winter parka and snow pants but, by the end of the day, I was wearing a bug jacket and long-sleeve shirt."

Brocklebank said another highlight of the camp was the mine tour, during which everyone got to visit AEM's Meadowbank Gold Mine.

He said the students saw where a lot of their relatives are working and staying at the mine. They also got to eat a meal at Meadowbank, which a lot of the kids really enjoyed.

"The students get a non-renewable resource credit (understanding mining and geology) for attending the annual Kivalliq Science/Culture Camp, as well as a wilderness credit (being on the land and camp life)," said Brocklebank.

"For me, personally, the highlight for camp life this year was the chili/ bannock bake-off. The teachers had

five minutes to support their team of students and the students had 90 minutes to prepare bannock for elders and chili.

"We had more boys than girls this year – three tent groups of boys and two of girls – and they were all vying for the bragging rights for having the best bannock and/ or chili.

"This year, the best chili went to a girl's tent and the best bannock went to a boy's tent, so it was spread out fairly well and the judges had a tough time with their final call, which wasn't unanimous."

Brocklebank said special guest Jim Kreuger appeared at the camp and said in the 20 years of the KSEC Kivalliq Science/Culture Camp, this year was the hardest to pick the winners of the chili/bannock bake-off.

He said it's really something to see how far the camp has gone since its humble beginnings.

"KSEC has been around for 25 years and the camp for 20, so that's pretty impressive.

"The level of interaction with the students this year was just fantastic, which made it a very, very strong year for the camp.

"The chance for teachers to meet other teachers in the region, learn

A few years ago, a plan was hatched in Qikiqtarjuaq – youth from the community would travel the 97-km Aksayuk Pass in Auyuittuq National Park.

Arctic Bay event brings out 143 to run or walk to raise money and awareness

The late Terry Fox said one of his hopes was to have every Canadian donate one dollar to help in the fight against cancer.

Arctic Bay did their part again and while the amount may not have been as big as in other areas of the country, they raised several dollars.

The community joined in with hundreds of other locales around Canada for the annual Terry Fox Run on Sept. 15 with a total of 143 registered participants for the day, according to Thomas Levi, Arctic Bay's recreation coordinator and co-organizer of the event.

"I drove the fire truck around town with the siren and Roxanne Kigutaq and I talked on the microphone announcing where people could register and when the run will start," he said.

He also said he had been advertising the run on the community radio station for a week and also put up information on local bulletin boards.

There were certificates for everyone who completed the run or walk but not everyone got a certificate.

That's because they ran out, said Levi, but there was a quick solution to that problem.

"For kids that we ran out of certificates for, we gave them ribbons (and) they were just as happy, too," he said.

The total raised from the run was $159.11 but when you add in the $150 raised by the golf tournament which happened the weekend before, that total becomes $309.11.

The golf tournament normally happens on the same day as the run but Levi said the golf tournament was held a week earlier than normal because it always seems to snow on the day of the tournament.

The work done by Levi and company in Arctic Bay didn't go unnoticed by the Terry Fox Foundation in Calgary.

Christie Krawchuk, the foundation's coordinator of community events and fundraising, said seeing Arctic Bay's work is a testament to what Fox wanted.

"The run reaches far and wide and even 39 years after the Marathon of Hope, there's still huge involvement," she said. "It's become a part of Canadian history and even small communities like Arctic Bay taking part on that one day of the year is fantastic. It shows that they still honour Terry's legacy."

The event in Arctic Bay may not be the biggest one in Canada and it may not raise the same amount of money as other larger centres in the country but every little bit helps, she added.

"It's still the same event and it goes back to what Terry said about every Canadian donating that one dollar," she said. "It doesn't have to be a big event – you can cater it to the size of the

It's been a great last 12 months in the world of Nunavut sport and the best of the best will get their just due next month in Iqaluit when the Recreation and Sport Awards Gala hands out the hardware.

We'll begin with an obvious choice:

Male Athlete of the Year: Eekeeluak Avalak, wrestling Find me another young athlete in Nunavut who's had a better last little while than "Eekee".

Cambridge Bay's own has torn it up on the wrestling mat and put the icing on the cake by winning silver at the Wrestling Canada U17 Canadian Championships earlier this year. And he's only 15.

He has a great coach in Chris Crooks, who has done a masterful job in keeping him grounded and realistic. At that same event where he won silver, Avalak got the chance to try out for the team that would head to the Pan-American Championship.

He didn't qualify and he didn't even win any of his matches. He didn't care. Crooks said it was all about getting him experience because he wanted to compete.

Avalak wrapped things up nicely by winning silver at the Western Canada Summer Games last month and should have this award all wrapped up as well.

Female Athlete of the Year: Taryn Lavallee, speedskating Now, you could pick any one of the Nunavut speedskaters that went to the Canada Winter Games this past February for this award. You could also pick any of the wrestlers that went to the Western Canada Summer Games and finished fourth but Taryn Lavallee of Iqaluit noses them out for one reason.

Lavallee set the new Nunavut mark in the girls 1,500-metre race during the repechage round. It didn't end the way she wanted as she was disqualified. But she still owns the record. She also set personal bests in the 500-metre and so did her teammates, Akutaq Williamson Bathory and Emma Carpenter.

She will get a chance to try out for the 2020 Arctic Winter Games speedskating team and don't be shocked if she ends up being a force on the ice in Whitehorse.

Coach of the Year : Too many to mention Again, this is a category where you pick so many and you would be right.

I could say Martin Joy, coach of the Canada Winter Games boys hockey team and how he managed to get those boys prepared for the biggest event of their hockey lives.

I could say Chris Crooks, who's coached Nunavut to so many great results over the past few years, especially Eekeeluak Avalak.

I could say Donald Clark, head coach of the Kivalliq Canucks, who took his boys to within one game of the final at the Maritime-Hockey North Junior C Championship.

I could say Liam Clarke, who helped mastermind Kugluktuk's young soccer players to Super Soccer victories in Yellowknife.

I could say Robert Kabvitok and Holly Mercer, both of whom have brought the Rankin Royals girls volleyball team to where they're at and who have started a youth baseball league from the ground up.

Pick one. You won't be wrong. Speaking of Kabvitok and Mercer ...

Special Recognition: Robert Kabvitok and Holly Mercer You need to have good people in a community to keep a program alive. You need someone to put in the time to help keep a program alive.

Kabvitok and Mercer have done that with the Rankin Royals, putting in so many hours over the past few years to help develop a great junior team that will keep volleyball growing in the community. They've also been the duo behind the youth baseball league in Rankin Inlet with the hope of building Little League in the community.

People like Kabvitok and Mercer do the little things and they're often forgotten because they've never gone looking for the spotlight. And that's why they're the best people to win this award.

Honourable mention: Thomas Levi, recreation co-ordinator in Arctic Bay. He's done so much for that community and I always like to joke about even if there's nothing going on in Arctic Bay, there's something going on in Arctic Bay because of Levi.

Team of the Year: Iqaluit Taekwondo Society This is a bit outside the box but hear me out.

The society made history by being part of the first Chan Hun International Taekwondo Federation World Championships in Australia this past March and only went and brought back seven medals of various colours between them.

Eekeeluak Avalak of Cambridge Bay, seen in action during the Western Canada Summer Games last month, is the front-runner for Male Athlete of the Year.

They also went to the General Choi tournament in Ottawa in June and cleaned up there, as they always do.

It's one of those clubs that just breeds success, not only in competition but also in life because so many people are a part of the society for so many reasons. It's a great club with great people running it and they're there for the right reasons.

Honourable mention: Canada Winter Games boys hockey

team simply for being there for the first time and suffering through the worst schedule in the world with four games in less than 36 hours. They still won a game, though and they didn't finish last.

Of all the scandals which have dogged Donald Trump, this one may the smoking gun which brings him down once and for all.

The National, a newspaper in Scotland, came out with a bombshell on Sept. 15 outing Trump as a pancake thief and not knowing a distant relative had died. It spoke with a distant cousin of Trump's, Alice MacKay, who outlined how Trump came to visit his mother's old home (his mother was born in Scotland) on the Isle of Lewis in the Hebrides. During the visit, MacKay was cooking pancakes at her house and he allegedly stuffed some in his pocket without even saying thank you. He also forgot her husband had died several years earlier.

That's it. Trump's cancelled.

Iqaluit air cadets search for commander, Naujaat army cadets soon to have theirs 'It's not as daunting as everyone thinks it might be,' says zone training officer about commanding a cadet corps

The 30-member air cadet squadron in Iqaluit has lost its commanding officer Lt (Navy) Heather Clark and has had to put a halt to some of its programming until positions are once again fully staffed.

"We parade on Tuesday nights.

We were doing fencing on Wednesdays. We were doing ground school and biathlon on Thursday nights.

Then we were doing a drop-in, where we do sports and everything else on Saturday afternoons," said Clark.

"We have been looking for somebody but it just became more apparent in May-ish because my husband and I decided that we were relocating to a different part of the country. We have a couple other officers but we don't have anybody who can actually take over the unit at the moment because a lot of the staff do duty travel, or have work commitments."

Clark says it's sometimes hard to find someone who can make the time commitment.

For now, Tuesday night and Saturday afternoon activities will continue.

Nunavut also has four army cadet corps, in Arctic Bay, Rankin Inlet, Naujaat and Cambridge Bay. Captain Erin McKinlay is a zone training officer, whose job it is to liaise with cadet corps and ensure they each have the support needed to run programs at the local level.

When the Naujaat cadets lost their commanding officer in 2018, McKinlay, who is based in Winnipeg, stepped in.

"They had a lot of community support and lots of cadet involvement. And they had volunteers who wanted to become officers. In order to facilitate their carrying on for that year, I took them over at a distance," explained McKinlay, who has since travelled to Naujaat five times.

"In between, I managed the staff.

Weekly, we would speak electronically and have a group chat."

Currently, a Naujaat resident is completing their officer enrollment and once that's done McKinlay will hand over command. She says the community should have officers in the next couple of months.

"The kids did not miss out on any of the opportunities the program has," she said.

The Naujaat corps has roughly 40 cadets and meet once a week in the evening for a normal training night, which includes classes, drills, as well as leadership and citizenship training.

In 2018, Rankin Inlet's corps similarly lost its commanding officer Lt. Dorothy Tootoo, who was at the helm for 11 years. When Iqaluit's commanding officer Lt. (Navy) Matthew Ayres moved to Rankin, he took over those duties.

"Arctic Bay right now is run by a school teacher so we're really conscious of making sure we're recruiting all the time for more staff members. It's an ongoing problem whether you're in the North or not," said McKinlay.

Meanwhile, Iqaluit has had a very healthy and very active cadet corps with lots of participation, she said.

"All the staff sort of became unavailable at the same time. It's unfortunate but it happens. But they have a lot of volunteers and a really strong base," McKinlay said. "We're looking to do something similar to Naujaat, which is having someone coordinate from a distance in the interim while we get some more people into uniform to take over the cadet corps locally."

McKinlay said interested parties do not have to have any background with cadets, or the military.

"All they need to do is want to learn and work with kids," she said.
