From the land to the mine Nickel mine produced drastic change in lifestyle for many Inuit

The move to Rankin Inlet from Naujaat to work in the nickel mine was an historic change in life for the families involved in the mid-1950s – and Piita Irniq, originally from Naujaat, remembers it well.

Irniq said he remembers when the federal government started flying Inuit couples on single-engine airplanes in 1956, as well as those who left Naujaat by dog team to go to Rankin.

He said in 1956, those who lived in Naujaat were still very, very traditional people.

"There were no houses then and everyone who lived there had nothing except for the animals, sea mammals, Arctic char and things like that," said Irniq.

"We were still travelling by dog team in the winter and walking the land to hunt caribou in the summer.

"There were only five houses in the community; three belonged to the Hudson Bay Co. and two belonged to the Roman Catholic Church.

"There were fewer than 100 Inuit in Naujaat in 1956 and most lived in an iglu in the winter, a tent in the summer and travelled by dog team hunting and trapping whenever the weather was nice."

Irniq said it was through the Roman Catholic Church that Inuit in Naujaat learned of the nickel mine opening in Rankin Inlet and the company was actively recruiting Inuit to move to Rankin.

He still remembers many of those who decided to move to the new community.

"Kailitaaq Maniilaq (Manilak) and his wife, Veronica, went as well as his older brother, Edward Iyakak and his wife, Qaaq. A single-engine aircraft went to get them and flew them to Rankin to work in the mine," said Irniq.

"Others who moved to Rankin at that time included Jack Anawak's family, Lorne Kusugak's family and the late Bernadette Saumik, who became quite a good artist.

"They were full-time hunters, trappers and fishers who started to work at the mine as soon as they arrived in Rankin – and they stayed."

Irniq said their new community was much more modernized than Naujaat.

He said there was only a tiny Hudson Bay Co. store in Naujaat that looked like a small confectionery store in southern Canada and Rankin had so many new things to offer, such as a group of small matchbox houses that have since long faded away with time.

"There were a lot of nonIndigenous people from southern Canada in Rankin when they arrived and everything was much bigger and more advanced in terms of hous-

"When I say Inuit are very adaptable people, imagine being a full-time hunter one day and working in a mine the next. That still impresses me a lot."

When the new miners and their families arrived in Rankin, for the vast majority it was their first real exposure to the monetary system and things

like credit.

Irniq said no one really had actual money in 1956 Naujaat, with, maybe, $50 to be found in the entire community with the little bit the Hudson Bay Co. and the Roman Catholic Church possessed.

He said trade was the money in Naujaat at that time, so handling money was something they first became used to in Rankin.

"They also started having square dances quite often

"So, they had major changes in their lifestyle from an iglu to a working mine basically overnight and they were introduced to all sorts of things southern Canadians had such as washing machines, toilets – or maybe honey buckets – inside the house.

"The whole land was our washroom in Naujaat. All the waste was eaten by either our Inuit Husky dogs or the ravens, because that was the traditional way we lived."

Irniq said when the mine closed in 1962, many Inuit who had moved to Rankin Inlet from communities across the region decided to stay. Rankin had become their home and had many more facilities and amenities, a larger nursing station and a community hall.

And it offered their children better opportunities through schooling.

He said Rankin quickly became the hub of the Keewatin region for business opportunities from southern Canada.

"When the mine closed, the Government of Canada opened a ceramic shop, which operated for almost 10 years and a canning facility for maktaaq,

"There were also some families who went to Yellowknife to work at the Giant Mine, such as Edward Iyakak, Francis Kapuk (still living in Rankin) and his older brother, Lucien Taparti.

"They became very good company for me too, because I'd see them once in a while

"Still other Inuit moved to Lynn Lake to work at the mine there. They had learned to become good miners in Rankin Inlet and many of them went on to work at other places – from that point of view, they were also adapting to life in much larger communities than Rankin Inlet."

Reflections on a time not so long ago Northern News Services

The pace of life increases at this time of year, as Nunavummiut return to school and work after summer vacations, it's refreshing to be reminded that this lifestyle did not come naturally for Nunavut's elders. We are thankful to former Nunavut Commissioner Piita Irniq for contributing his memories of his youth, which were first printed in this week's edition of Kivalliq News and are reprinted in this edition of Nunavut News.

Irniq recalls the elders who left the smaller communities for the nickel mine at Rankin Inlet, around which the hamlet grew during the mine's five-year life from 1957 to 1962. The elders, miners who migrated with their families from all over what is now Nunavut, left their homes and many did not return.

One thing that stands out to us is Irniq's recollection was that cash had no currency in the communities at the time. Trade was the currency and only the Hudson Bay store and the church would have had cash. In such a short time, Inuit have gone from not knowing cash to not living without it and soon electronic money will replace cash completely.

Honouring our older folk Northern News Services

Society today has changed from what was.

There's a group of people who are of greater age or are referred to as senior or firstborn or 'elders'. If you look around really hard, you don't see many of them around anymore.

Couple of explanations on their quiet existence: one, they are in extended care facilities, or they are shut-in at home; either way we hardly see them. Let's see if we bring them out – at least on paper.

When I talk about elders, I am referring to someone of greater age who has lived his or her life to what they deem as a full, productive life. Let's remember that when they were young they were driving dog-teams and paddling skin kayaks. They were physically fit as their very existence was a mobile one. They moved from one camp setting to the next in search of food and furs.

As they prepared for any movement, they studied the weather pattern and could determine rather quickly whether they would move today or in a day or two. They were very conscious of the fact that a small group of people – usually family and extended members – needed shelter and food and that someone had to take the leadership and guide this small party. There was not a big fanfare or complicated system in this determination, the small band recognized and supported the decision of the alpha male and his partner and this maintained unity and co-operation.

As this present leadership aged, they mentored and watched the growth of the members and turned over the responsibility to another couple who showed maturity and dedication to then lead them in their quest. This happened over several generations and has given us the true interpretation of 'inherent' traits or

In my View Harry Maksagak is a Cambridge Bay resident and former underground miner at the Lupin gold mine. He has been married for 43 years and has five children, 28 grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

the Inuit Qaujimajatuqangit (IQ) principles: respecting others, relationships and caring for people; fostering good spirits by being open, welcoming and inclusive; serving and providing for family and/or community; decisionmaking through consensus; development of skills through practice, effort and action; working together for a common cause; being innovative and resourceful; and, respect and care for the land, animals and the environment.

Our elders did not put out notices or go on Facebook to bring attention to themselves, but rather lived according to these simple principles and were so willing to share them. You'll note as well they do not impose on anyone but wait until they are asked and then they show their pleasure of explaining whatever was asked of them. And their answers were from experience.

As with the mobile party, when the leaders began to show their age, they mentored the next generation of leaders and the remaining elders of today do the same thing, they remind anyone who will listen to be considerate, share your catch, don't travel alone, be prepared and so on.

I'd like to close by saying, show your respect for our elders. They are a wealth of valuable information and they should always be on the pedestal.

Time to nominate elders for award Inuit Heritage Trust encourages Nunavummiut to help choose deserving elders, recipients announced in November

Every two years, since 1999, the Inuit Heritage Trust (IHT) recognizes elders from across the territory.

"One per region but, in the past, before my time, there were a lot of elders being submitted. There were more than one per region in the past," explained IHT's heritage manager Ralph Kownak.

"A lot of our elders are passing on so submissions are getting fewer and fewer by the years."

Kownak says anyone can nominate an elder, including family.

"I recommend to the youth to submit their elders forward to our committee," he said, adding there's no cost to nominate.

"The more the merrier."

And while Kownak said they have received submissions for the 2019 recognition awards, he encourages people to think about which elders

should be recognized in future.

"It could be any elder who has been proactive with teaching Inuit knowledge in schools ... The criteria would be teaching, a lot of teaching youth, going to schools or sharing their knowledge of the history of Inuit. How to hunt or to sew. It's a variety of different aspects elders are recognized for," Kownak said.

"The more information is provided in the submission, the more clear it is, the better chance they'll have being selected."

In 2017, for example, Sally Qimmiu'naaq Webster of Baker Lake was recognized for working tirelessly over the years to share her knowledge and culture with Inuit in various communities in Nunavut.

Taloyoak's Inuk Aiyout was recognized for telling children stories of the past and teaching how to survive on the land. Iglulik's Susan Avingaq received her award for being an ambassador of the arts, in the territory, nationally and

IHT has also recognized elders who have played "an invaluable role to the work of IHT in sharing traditional knowledge about place names, archaeology, oral history and how to appropriately deal with Inuit cultural materials."

In an email, Kownak stated, "This year IHT particularly encouraged suggestions of female elders whose role of keepers of knowledge and backbones of families often is under-acknowledged. Passing on Inuit traditional knowledge to the younger generations helps our children to find their cultural identity in the modern world and encourages them to become strong, self-confident adults."

The IHT board will meet sometime in November to review submissions for the 2019 awards.

"Then we send a plaque and cheque ($1,500) to the hamlet office for the mayor to present to the elder, let's say during a Christmas games event or community activities. So the community will recognize them, as well, that they've done a great job with Inuit knowledge," Kownak said.

Bringing 'truth back to the archival record' Library and Archives Canada has helped identify more than 1,000 elders in its images since inception of Project Naming program in 2001

For more than a century, Library and Archives Canada (LAC) has accumulated thousands of images of Nunavummiut. In many cases, the images were taken by outsiders who had little or no interest in the stories behind the people in them. And so the images existed as artefacts without names.

But that all changed in 2001, when a partnership between Nunavut Sivuniksavut (NS), the territorial government and LAC was formed to help correct the historical record and give context to those unnamed in the images.

Nineteen years later, Project Naming has been responsible for providing names and context to close than 3,500 photos, at least half of which are of Inuit across Canada's North.

"It's intended to bring truth back to the archival record," said Alexandra Haggert, project manager for Project Naming. "Its longevity speaks to its importance.

Its now been running for 19 years without stopping."

The project has come along way since its inception. It started as a student-led initiative at NS, where students who would take physical copies of the photos from the archives and bring them to their own communities on vacations and return with the information.

"It was very much a project about getting youth and elders to talk together learn from each other," explained Haggert. "It was a slower and more laborious project."

In 2005, LAC formalized the project by putting digitized images on the web for the first time.

That helped increase the amount of responses because people didn't have to be physically present to identify them.

With the advent of social media, LAC started using the platform to try and expand their reach even more. They started by putting pictures on LAC's Facebook page once a week in 2015 before creating a dedicated Project Naming Facebook page in 2017. LAC now puts out approximately three images a week on their page.

"It's incredible the collaborations we've been able to have," said Haggert. "It was rewarding to see family members connecting online."

In March, Haggert and the LAC team made a visit to Arviat to connect with community members in person. Arviat was chosen as a location because in 2012 cousins Jordan and Curtis Konek participated in a filming project with elders Martha and Helen Konek, travelling to Ottawa to examine the archival prints in the archives.

"One of the reasons we wanted to go to Arviat is because we wanted to show Martha and Helen all the progress we made and to show them there were more photos that had been digitized."

LAC ended up bringing copies of 400 photos with them to Arviat.

By the end of the visit, they had identified people in at least 100 of them.

Not only did they get the names of people but they also had people telling stories about who they were and what their names meant, all details which were eventually added to the archival record.

"That's one of the best things about project naming. We know the importance of names in Inuit culture," said Haggert.

"What we always love to hear is the context of who those people were. And with Inuit names, where they came from."

With the 20th anniversary of the project just around the corner, there are no immediate plans to travel to other communities, but that could change.

"We still try to have as many community-based activities and events as much as possible because

we know that's the best way to engage with elders, said Haggert.

LAC will also continue to run its Facebook page, which builds connections on a daily basis.

"It's a very heartwarming thing to see," she said. "There's a lot of negative aspects to social media but this is one of the incredible things that has come out of social media over the years."

While the project has had many

positive impacts on people who are still alive, Haggert points out that the value of the names being archived is that they will be able to accessed for generations to come.

"I like to think that 10 years from now, 50 years from now, if someone is doing research on their great-great-grandfather ... they'll actually be able to go into the archives and see their names.

That's the long term impact."

Elder brings wisdom and joy to workshop Aline Kabvitok shared her sewing skills and traditional stories with a group of 40 women in Rankin Inlet over the last month

The knowledge and wisdom of an elder is priceless.

That is what a group of about 40 women learned during a summer amautimaking workshop in Rankin Inlet over the last month.

"Our main focus was to teach and have residential school survivors or their families how to make baby carriers and have instructors like myself, another younger lady like myself and another seamstress, as well as an elder to teach them," explained Silu Ittinuar of the Pulaarvik Kablu Friendship Centre, which ran the workshop.

"It was a safe environment where they could speak about their problems and if they felt shy they could ask questions."

Aline Kabvitok was the elder in charge of helping out for the month. Ittinuar said she brought a lot to the table during the workshop.

"She brought everything. All her knowledge down to creating the pattern. Showing us how to make a pattern with just your hands," said Ittinuar.

"For us seamstresses we learned some-

thing new every day."

While Kabvitok imparted her technical skills on the group, she also shared lots of stories about her own life and experiences.

"She's so funny and so knowledgeable," said Ittinuar. "Of course she told stories and she told her experiences and her first time sewing. And becoming a mother herself. It's been amazing to have her here."

"We were also learning about 50 years ago or 100 years ago when women sewed these amautiit and hearing about the past and Inuit knowledge."

The women who took part in the workshop ranged in age from their early 20s to their 50s with different skill levels.

"It was their first creation for some of them and some of them just wanted to know how to improve their skills," said Ittinuar.

Now that the summer amauti program is wrapping up, Ittinuar is now planning for a parka-making workshop that will begin in the fall. While details have yet to be finalized it is certain that there will be at least one elder on board to help run the next program.

"It could have been possible without an elder but having the elder here is a huge bonus," said Ittinuar.

Enook's 285. Qamaniq was Enook's sole opponent in the 2013 territorial election and lost again – 132 to Enook's 359. In 2017, Enook again took the vote, with 258 to Qamaniq's 146.

Qamaniq also served on the local district education authority and more recently as a QIA community liaison officer.

Voting takes place at Nasivvik High School Sept. 16 from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m.

Toronto furs head to Kugluktuk and Iqaluit for sewing projects

Kugluktuk/Iqaluit A 2016 school exchange between Kugluktuk High School and Upper Canada College, located in Toronto, has led to a surprising endeavour.

Robert Walker, one of the four students from Toronto, working with his mother Susan Eplett, have collected unused fur coats. Those will be on their way to Kugluktuk and Iqaluit in the coming month. Walker already sent a shipment to Kugluktuk last year.

"When I visited (in 2016), the school had some fur coats that people had brought up for sewing class," said Walker.

Inuarak, a former mayor of Pond Inlet, served as the community director for the Qikiktani Inuit Association (QIA) after his election in Dec. 2018. He stepped away from that position to Kangiqliniq/Rankin Inlet declare his candidacy for the Tununiq seat.

A new Canada Goose global campaign, Live in The Open, Qamaniq, also a former mayor for the community, is running for the Tununiq seat for the fifth time. In 2004, he came second will feature former NHL player Jordin Tootoo.

Bus services for Rankin Inlet

Rankin Inlet A new community bus service has been established in Rankin Inlet this month, operating from 7 a.m. until 7 p.m. daily.

The bus is being operated by Rankin Auto Value Inc. and use of the service if being offered free of charge for the month of September to introduce the community to the bus service and its routes.

Beginning in October, single-ride fares will be set at $5 for youth (aged six to 16) and elders (65 and older) and $10 for adults, with monthly passes being available at $50 for youth and elders and $100 for adults.

Six-month and yearly passes can also be purchased at further-discounted rates.

The company's buses are equipped with wheelchair lifts and tie-downs, however those requiring the service will have to phone ahead at least one hour prior to their pick-up time to ensure the company has the proper staff available to assist them.

Cabinet decides on next priorities GN to establish mine training centre in Rankin, increase appointments of long-term casuals

Cabinet ministers met in Arviat last week for a mid-term retreat and resurfaced with a wish list of what they would like the government to accomplish in the remaining two years of its mandate, including establishing a mine training centre in Rankin Inlet.

"We are a united executive council, with clear goals and strong ideas for Nunavut. We are now close to halfway through our mandate and we remain committed to accountability and ensuring the Government of Nunavut achieves the goals of our mandate," stated Premier Joe Savikataaq in a Sept. 9 news release.

"After a productive two days, we have specific direction to move forward and accomplish our work to benefit all Nunavummiut."

Along with the Rankin Inlet centre, cabinet established the following goals: • Foster Inuit employment across the public service by substantially increasing the number of direct appointments of long-term casuals.

• Ensure the Financial Assistance for Nunavut Students program returns to the Department of Education, to support life-long learning.

• Renew partnerships with the regional, territorial and national Inuit organizations to strengthen planning and amplify territorial voices.

•

Move the fisheries and sealing division from the Department of Environment to the Department of Economic Development and Transportation, with enhanced support for the viability of the sector's potential.

• Engage more proactively and frequently with the new federal government to provide Nunavummiut with the same standards and opportunities as Canadians in other jurisdictions.

Savikataaq stated his government is on track with its Turaaqtavut mandate.

"Our main priority has always been the success and well-being of our people. We look to enhance the services and programs we provide and give Nunavummiut every opportunity to thrive," he stated.

Meanwhile, on Sept. 6, Savikataaq announced changes in senior management.

Effective September 9, 2019: Kathy Okpik, Deputy Minister of Executive and Intergovernmental Affairs returns as Deputy Minister of Education.

William MacKay, Deputy Minister of Justice becomes Deputy Minister of Executive and Intergovernmental Affairs.

Feds release long-term vision for Canada's North

The Liberal government has delivered on its promise of a long-term vision for Canada's North a little over one month before October's federal election.

Minister of Crown-Indigenous Relations Carolyn Bennett released the Arctic and Northern Policy Framework to the public with little fanfare Sept. 10.

"The Arctic and Northern Policy Framework must be leveraged to bring Inuit Nunangat into Canada as a nation-building exercise, helping to create prosperity for Inuit that in turn benefits all Canadians," stated Inuit Tapiriit Kanatami president Natan Obed.

"Our homeland encompasses nearly onethird of Canada's landmass, its entire Arctic coastline and significant offshore areas.

Partnerships that respect and advance Inuit self-determination, rights and governance are therefore pivotal to achieving the framework's goals and objectives, particularly at a time of renewed global focus on the Arctic."

In the works since 2016, the framework involved a "whole-of-government, co-development process," according to Crown-Indigenous Relations and Northern Affairs Canada's news release.

Based on eight broad goals, the framework

is divided into chapters addressing a variety of topics: international; safety, security and defence; and chapters outlining "the visions, aspirations and priorities of our co-development partners."

Partners include the three territorial governments, more than 25 Indigenous organizations representing Inuit, First Nations and Metis and the governments of Manitoba, Quebec and Newfoundland and Labrador.

"Fostering success in the Arctic is necessary in nation-building. It is our hope that the Arctic and Northern Policy Framework will lead to direct, strategic investments to meet Nunavut's urgent needs in basic infrastructure, housing, healthcare, education and training, power transmission and transportation corridors and connectivity," stated Premier Joe Savikataaq.

"We look forward to closing the divide between the Arctic and the rest of the country, for the benefit of all Canadians."

"In the second phase, the Government of Canada and partners will develop governance mechanisms describing how partners will collaborate to share information and assess progress on the framework and an implementation plan outlining how new investments and other economic and regulatory levers will contribute to the implementation of the framework," according to the news release.

NDP banks on youth Mumilaaq Qaqqaq, 25, to compete with Pizzo-Lyall and Aglukkaq

The New Democratic Party (NDP) announced Sept. 12 that Mumilaaq Qaqqaq is their pick for the Oct. 21 federal election.

Qaqqaq will face the Liberals' Megan PizzoLyall and the Conservatives' Leona Aglukkaq, the former MP and cabinet minister under Stephen Harper.

"Some of my priorities as Member of Parliament is creating and maintaining harmonious and stable relationships between Inuit, Nunavut and all different levels of government and to increase housing, as Jagmeet Singh has committed to increasing housing across the territory," Qaqqaq told her audience at the Sylvia Grinnell Territorial Park pavilion Sept. 12.

"That gives me the opportunity to push for that. We all know that it's much needed up here."

Qaqqaq is also dedicated to seeing the United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples put into law.

"These kinds of things include the right to self-determination, the right to maintain and strengthen our distinct political, legal, economic, social and cultural institutions.

Imagine if these kinds of things were put into law how powerful that could be for us in Nunavut and for our people," she said.

Qaqqaq also wants to increase youth participation "at all different levels that directly impact our future."

Qaqqaq, of Baker Lake, is 25 – which happens to be the median age in the territory, according to the 2016 census.

Long dedicated to youth advocacy, Qaqqaq has been a youth leader with Northern Youth Abroad and has worked for Nunavut Tunngavik Inc., the Government of Nunavut and Inuit Tapiriit Kanatami.

She was widely recognized for her speech addressing suicide in the House of Commons in 2017.

Aaron Watson, with the Nunavut NDP electoral district association, noted that in the 2015 election the party received a record number of votes with Jack Anawak as the candidate. Anawak showed his support Thursday night by attending the event.

The NDP came second to the Liberals that year. Previously, Peter Ittinuar won under the NDP banner in the late '70s and early '80s.

"Over the past four years we've been working hard to further Northern issues specific to Nunavut and Inuit at the federal level. We have worked with other electoral district associations in policy conventions to push motions forward with mutual interests," said Watson, adding it's at a convention Singh was elected leader – the first

person of colour to be elected leader by a Canadian party.

Watson then spoke about youth and how Singh says youth have gotten a raw deal.

"I see people regularly dismissing the concerns of youth and young adults. Don't get me wrong, every single one of us matters. Young people, those under 25, are the majority of our population. A majority of you don't vote. It's time to burst that bubble.

It's time to get out your vote," he said.

"Older generations, including mine, need to show that we're ready and able to help build a better future for you and for all of us."

As for Qaqqaq, she vowed to remain honest, driven and inclusive throughout campaigning.

"We all have a part to play to commit to a healed and hopeful Nunavut, where every individual and community has their needs met and are thriving. So I'm going to leave you with two questions. Are you ready for change? And are you ready for a voice in the House of Commons that represents a Nunavut that is strong and passionate?

Because I am."

Qaqqaq said it's thanks to her mother, father and brother that she decided to present herself as a candidate, for their teaching her the value of hard work, respect and patience.

Rankin Inlet slopitch squad takes down Juggernauts to claim softball title

Team New Age rose to the occasion and took down the Juggernauts 10-8 to claim the 2019 Rankin Inlet Co-ed Softball League title in Rankin last month.

The championship series was a back-and-forth affair, with New Era nipping the Juggernauts three games to two on Aug. 5

In a strange twist of fate, the co-ed title was the second in a row for Craig Beardsall, who was part of the 2018 Legionaries team that defeated New Era in straight games to take the league title.

Gloria Kaludjak took the win on the mound for New Era, while Catherine Ayaruak took the loss on the hill for the Juggernauts.

Scholarships up for grabs Nunavut The Recreation and Parks Association of Nunavut (RPAN) has started a new program geared toward helping people get educated in recreation studies.

It's a new scholarship program designed to give people a chance to take part in the Northern Recreation Leadership program, which is being offered by Recreation North, a joint

in the six-team Rankin league this season.

He said at least three of the six squads were very competitive.

"With teams that win different tournaments getting to advance to provincial-and-national tournaments now, that pumps-up the level of play in the league a little bit, I'd say," said Connelly.

"The important part about winning the league title is that you get

bragging rights for a year.

"The two teams were pretty evenly matched and the final series went back-and-forth from game one until game five."

Connelly played in most New Era games this season and he said players on the different teams in the league showed up for their games, competed and had a lot of fun.

He said while some members of his team celebrated the champion-

effort between the three recreation and parks associations in the North. A total of five scholarships will be given out with the studies beginning this November to people who are currently working in the recreation sector within Nunavut.

The application form is available on the RPAN website and the deadline to apply is Sept. 27.

Speedskating starts up Iqaluit Speedskating is underway in Iqaluit.

The Nunavut Speed Skating Association started its 20192020 season on Sept. 14 at the Arnaitok Arena in the capital with the pre-season getting underway for all of the skaters eligible to compete at the 2020 Arctic Winter Games.

They will be doing a mixture of on-ice practices three times per week – Mondays, Thursday and Saturdays – along with dryland training sessions at Nanook Elementary School.

Taekwondo gets underway Iqaluit The Iqaluit Taekwondo Society is off and running with its 2019-2020 season.

The first set of classes kicked off on Sept. 9 at Aqsarniit Middle School with the Surusiq program for those between the ages of seven through 10 and the white belts – 11 and older – up first followed by the yellow belts and up and finishing up with the red belts and up.

Classes are scheduled to happen at Aqsarniit every Monday, Wednesday and Friday evening with the lone exception being the Surusiq group not practising on Fridays.

Community hosts annual Terry Fox Golf Tournament in support of cancer research

One of Terry Fox's last wishes before he died was for every Canadian to give at least one dollar toward cancer research.

Arctic Bay is one community which may not raise the most money each year but its donations to the cause have been one of the most consistent.

The community once again held its annual Terry Fox Golf Tournament but it was a little earlier than normal with Sept. 7 being the date everyone teed off.

Thomas Levi, the community's recreation co-ordinator, said it was held a week earlier than normal because of the threat of snow.

"It usually snows when we play so we decided to do it earlier," he said.

A total of nine players teed off with almost all paying more than the $10 entry fee to play, he added, which was down from last year because of work commitments and the narwhal hunting season was still on.

"Most donated extra to play and there was one regular participant that left town (for) work-related but donated $10," he said.

The final tally from the tournament was $150 which will be added to the money raised from the community's Terry Fox Run, which happened on Sept.

15. The amount from that event wasn't known as of press time.

Darryl Levi was the winner of this year's tournament by one shot and that got him the championship trophy plus prizes donated by the Taqqut Co-op.

"That (trophy) was donated by GoldTech, who we deal with (for) our sea-lift supplies," he said. "First thing he did before accepting the trophy was (that) he really wanted to put the T-shirt on."

In keeping with tradition, the lastplace finisher received a prize but instead of the usual honeybucket, it was a five-gallon jerry can donated by Taqqut Co-op.

That honour went to Joabie Levi.

"The Co-op didn't have any honeybuckets this year," said Thomas Levi.

The players were also kept fed, watered and warm by Koonoo Shooyook, Irene Willie and Roxanne Kigutaq, who kept a fire going and boiled tea and coffee for the participants.

Thomas Levi said Willie and her husband also provided plenty of food for everyone including sandwiches, two types of soup, hot dogs and juice.

"They made sure we had hot tea and coffee by the halfway (point) through the tournament for a break," he said.

Business gathering celebrates partnerships Nunavut Trade Show and Conference brings together 300 delegates in the capital

Marking its 28th annual Nunavut Trade Show and Conference, the Baffin Regional Chamber of Commerce (BRCC) will welcome roughly 300 delegates in Iqaluit Sept. 17 to 19.

"The theme for this year's trade show and conference is Celebrating Partnerships, based on the Inuit Qaujimajatuqangit principle Piliriqatigiinniq/Ikajuqtigiinniq, working together for a common cause," said the chamber's manager of events and membership services Lauren Nevin.

"Partnerships between governments, Inuit organizations and private businesses are essential to making a stronger Nunavut."

That principle of partnership has been especially evident in the lead-up to the conference.

"There was a bit of concern this year due to hotel shortages but, miraculously, people have come together and invited people into their homes. Directors, managers and staff have also put up their homes," said executive director Hudson Lester.

"I think it really goes to show the strength of community in Nunavut and how everybody bonds together to achieve any task in front of them. So we managed to get up to pretty similar numbers (of delegates) as last year."

A variety of conference topics are available to appeal to a wide range of interests.

"We're going to have the NNI (Nunavummi Nangminiqaqtunik Ikajuuti) talk about the policy and Nunavut business," said Lester.

Nunavut Tunngavik Inc. (NTI) policy advisor Travis Cooper and executive co-ordin-

ator for the Department of Economic Development and Transportation's NNI Secretariat Ron Dewar will speak on the procurement policies in place for the territorial and federal governments.

"We're going to have (a session) on resources for business development. That will be opening up all the things that local businesses, people wanting to start a business, or grow their business can access that are available here in Nunavut," said Lester.

That discussion will be lead by Kakivak Association's career services senior project officer Pat Powell, RBC Insurance's senior insurance specialist Bradley Roy, professor of marketing from Franklin Pierce University in New Hampshire Jason Little, who did a study on marketing in Nunavut and the Canadian Executive Service Organization community relations officer Rachel Davis.

"We also have Entrepreneurs in Nunavut.

Because we're the Baffin Regional Chamber of Commerce, we've gone around the Baffin region and asked a few keynote speakers to talk about their entrepreneurial steps in building their business and where it has taken them so far," Lester said.

Creative director of Hitmakerz Thor Simonsen, Uasau Soap owners Bernice and Justin Clarke and Arctic Fresh chief executive officer Rhoda Angutimarik will share their stories.

Lester also notes the Land, Sea and Air session.

Canadian North president and chief executive officer Chris Avery, who is leading the Canadian North and First Air merger, will speak on what the merger means for Nunavut.

Premier Joe Savikataaq will welcome delegates at the Nunavut Trade Show and Conference's Northwestel Opening Luncheon Sept. 17, as he did last year.

Kivalliq Hydro Fibre Link project lead Lawrence Mott will update participants on that project. Finally, a Baffinland Iron Mines Corp. representative will discuss the company's proposed plans for a railroad at the Mary River mine site.

Other sessions include Innovation and Technology and Rebuilding Nunavut's Sealing Industry.

The trade show, as in past years, will be held at the Arctic Winter Games Arena. Com-

panies with a presence in Nunavut will have booths, as will artists.

"We try to get a diverse range (of artists).

Usually, we block off a section every year and then we work with NACA (Nunavut Arts and Crafts Association) and they do a call-out for the artists," said Lester.

The Nunavut Business Achievement Awards will be held Wednesday night and the three-day trade show and conference will close with a gala and charity auction.
