Arctic Bay hopes to reopen daycare

Mayor needs six to eight interested people for early childhood education training after Baffinland donates $50,000 Michele LeTourneau

Arctic Bay's mayor hopes the community's daycare will open its doors again by 2021, thanks to a $50,000 donation from Baffinland Iron Mines Corp.

Frank May says reopening the daycare has been a part of Arctic Bay's economic development plan for 20 years, but funding to refurbish the old daycare, which operated for a couple of years, has been hard to find.

Enter Baffinland.

“It was very celebratory,” said the company's vice-president of community and strategic development Udlu Hanson about the cheque presentation event.

“There was a lot of clapping and appreciation, understanding that this is a major step towards opening the daycare.”

The re-opening of Tununirusiq Daycare will provide muchneeded spaces, enabling parents and guardians to enter the workforce. May approached the mining company for assistance.

“This donation from Baffinland will … give us the opportunity to reopen our doors and make plans for the daycare. It will also help us begin establishing a foundation for an Early Childhood Resource Centre, which would house both the daycare and students from the Aboriginal Head Start Program,” stated May. May says not having a daycare in the community means workplaces, such as the Co-op or the schools, can be disrupted when a pre-school-aged child is sick or there are no babysitters available. Employers find themselves juggling staff.

“For the people that are trying to work, they have no real option,” said May. “And we have high school students that are mothers and fathers. So they run into the same thing. If they don't have a ready babysitter, then it's starting to impact them trying to get their Grade 12.”

The Arctic Bay daycare is on the list to receive Pirurvik Preschool trainers who will bring their award-winning, made-inNunavut early childhood education program to the community.

And May says he's currently trying to find six to eight people interested in taking an early childhood education applied certificate program. If he gets those names, Nunavut Arctic College will offer the two-to-three-week modules in the community.

“If I can get six or eight bodies, I can start working on that.

If anybody in Arctic Bay is interested, give me a call,” May said.

Repairs to the building should be done by Christmas, but training staff and doing everything else involved in setting up a daycare could take up to two years.

May noted Ruth Oyukuluk, Julian Oyukuluk, Lena Qaunaq and Baffinland employee Natsiq Kango were the driving force behind reestablishing the daycare.

“They actually showed us around the building that will be used, that was used in the past, for the daycare that had to shut down,” said Hanson, adding the women explained what would need to be done for the building to be child-ready.

“Of course, for any of this to happen, any of the training and all the other costs associated with opening the daycare, this wasn't going to be realized unless they had the physical space for it, a usable space. This was really the first step. And there's really not much funding available, bricks-and-mortar type funding for daycares and for communities that want to open a daycare. They said this is the first stepping stone for them to do that.”

As Hanson points out, Nunavut lags behind in daycare spaces. After the announcement, the community held a feast.

Martha Qaunaq, who originally opened the daycare in the early 2000s, recited a special prayer to kick-off the event.

The funding comes from a pot of money Baffinland calls the donations and sponsorship fund. That fund is for the five North Baffin communities the company seeks to support: Iglulik, Pond Inlet, Clyde River, Hall Beach and Arctic Bay. The priority areas for the fund are health and safety, education, art, sports and culture, community engagement, and mining events and mining education. The company has sponsored teams to participate in sporting events, for example, and it bought one community a Zamboni. It also contributed to the elders' gathering recently held in Iglulik by flying elders from its affected communities with its plane.

“We also provided a cash donation to help with the kitchen,” said Hanson.

Baffinland also helps communities with proposals to leverage other funding. Projects are community-driven.

“We don't act on anything unless it's been requested by the community, and they're almost all volunteer-led initiatives,” said Hanson.

Greenhouse gears up for fall growth Baskets of greens to be sold on a subscription basis in Kugluktuk; deal may be struck with retailers

The seeds have been planted and crops are growing in Kugluktuk's hydroponic greenhouse for its first fall season.

The project, based inside a sixmetre sea can and overseen by the Hamlet of Kugluktuk, was on hiatus during the summer, said economic development officer Matt Stadnyk.

It began operations in February and completed its pilot phase in June.

Varieties of lettuce – romaine, iceberg, wildfire – as well as kale, arugula, and herbs are grown and can be harvested in as little as three weeks.

Funding has been secured to help offset operational expenses, the largest of which is the power bill.

Electricity runs close to $3,400 per month.

“It's pretty significant. Unfortunately not much can be done about it.

We're heating up a box in the Arctic to almost tropical temperatures in there,” said Stadnyk. “The benefit we get out of it far outweighs that. It's just a matter of getting creative with our funders and building up a reserve fund from the profits of it.”

The operation isn't profitable yet.

A new subscription basket program will be offered to residents soon, but the details were still in development as of Aug. 29, according to Stadnyk. Previously sales were $5 per head of lettuce through a punch-pass program, which gave customers a

free fifth head after purchasing four.

Dozens upon dozens of community members were regular customers, said Stadnyk.

“The amount of recipes and pictures that people have been uploading (online) has just been remarkable,” he said. “I can't believe how many people took the produce and were so proud to share what they made with it... they combined it with local greens and berries and they combine it with char and maktaaq and other traditional proteins as well. It was exactly the response I'd hoped for.”

Lori Rudyk is one of those loyal customers.

“I am super enthused about the Kugluktuk greenhouse. Everything I've tried has been delicious. I have tried the tatsoi (a green), mixed salad greens and stir-fry mix,” she stated.

“My son loves them all too, and I feel better about his meals when they contain fresh greens. I find the prices to be fair, especially since the roots can be placed in water to retain freshness, so less waste too.”

Greenhouse produce was shared earlier this year with the elementary school, high school, the women's shelter, and a few community events.

Opportunities to put local greens on shelves at the Co-op or the Northern will also be explored, Stadnyk added.

“We're not trying to undercut anyone,” he said. “We're trying to provide the best quality produce and profit to our resellers as well to make

Three volunteers have been integral to keeping the greenhouse running, Stadnyk noted. It takes about two hours per day to

maintain the crops.

Not everything has gone without a hitch. There was initially a low success rate with the herbs growing in the local tap water but some tinkering has been done to correct

that, said Stadnyk.

“We're feeling confident now with the experience of our pilot phase that we now know exactly what we're getting into and how to get the best yield for our crops,” he said.

Airlines awarded duty and medical contracts Canadian North and Calm Air named providers; only one new carrier expressed interest in serving Nunavut

Canadian North will provide medical travel, duty travel and air freight for the Government of Nunavut in the Qikiqtaaluk and Kitikmeot regions while Calm Air will serve the Kivalliq region and Sanikiluaq as the territorial government awarded its airline procurement strategy contracts on Aug. 23.

The GN was seeking new carriers to enter the Nunavut market but only one potential new player – North Star Air in Thunder Bay, Ont. – made a bid on the contracts. First Air, which is in the process of merging with Canadian North, also submitted a bid.

The GN met with representatives of several carriers and some of those executives said their fleets weren't suited for Nunavut's gravel runways, according to Mark McCulloch, senior manager of procurement with the Department of Community and Government Services. Other factors cited included the lack of facilities and

Canadian North and Calm Air have been awarded duty travel and medical travel contracts to serve the Government of Nunavut. The new contracts will go into effect in December for the Kivalliq and in January 2020 elsewhere in Nunavut. services such as de-icing, cargo off-loading, hangar facilities and the territory's relatively low population and large geographical area, McCulloch added.

Regardless, the airline procurement process signalled to the Canadian airline industry that Nunavut is “open for business,” he said.

The GN's duty and medical travel contracts will be effective in December for the Kivalliq and in January 2020 elsewhere in Nunavut. The deals will be in place for three years with the option for renewals potentially stretching to a maximum of six years.

The financial terms were

not publicly released, but the airlines will make their public offering of cost and services later this year, said McCulloch.

“We believe the procurement process did create some stability and downward pressure on ticket prices so that Nunavummiut can have access to reliable and safe air travel,” he stated.

The GN created its airline procurement strategy with a goal of reducing expenses associated with medical and duty travel, which costs the government an estimated $60 million to $65 million annually. “Significant” GN staff time also went into the process, McCulloch acknowledged.

John Main, MLA for Arviat North-Whale Cove and chair of the Standing Committee on Oversight of Government Operations and Public Accounts, said, “Only time will tell if improvements are made and money is better spent as a result of the strategy.”

Calm Air's coverage area will include Winnipeg while Canadian North's civil service

work travel and medical passenger service will encompass trips to Ottawa, Yellowknife and Edmonton.

The GN began its airline procurement process in 2017 and issued a $700,000 contract to German-based Lufthansa Consulting that September to produce a report with recommendations on how to proceed.

Main said the GN needs to be more transparent about spending on medical and duty travel so MLAs can ensure the

territorial government is tracking costs and administering contracts properly.

McCulloch noted that monitoring will increase to ensure Canadian North and Calm Air meet objectives pertaining to Inuit employment and training; use of Inuit and Nunavut-owned contractors and suppliers; ticket prices; and performance related to operating on schedule, mechanical failures, etc.

Failure to meet those objectives could result in penalties.

Archeologists peer inside Franklin ship Terror Arctic grave results in 'astonishing' number of well-preserved artifacts

More than 170 years after the Franklin ship HMS Terror's fate was sealed at the bottom of the Arctic Ocean, archeologists have finally taken a look inside the sunken vessel.

A remotely-operated underwater vehicle entered the ship several times earlier this month, revealing an “astonishing” number of wellpreserved artifacts in the cold waters of Terror Bay, off the coast of King William Island.

The researchers saw glass bottles, silverware, dinner plates, desks, cabinets, chests, scientific instruments and a surveyor's tripod, among other objects.

“In every single cabin and compartment, there are things to see. It was sort of one discovery after the next,” said Ryan Harris, Parks Canada's lead archeologist and project director, who added that high-definition footage was shot of approximately 90 per cent of the ship's lower deck from Aug. 9 to 15.

The only closed door that the underwater device encountered was to Capt. Francis Crozier's bedchamber.

“The wreck offers an astounding opportunity to enter into the lives of the sailors on board,” said Harris, who noted that no human remains were detected on the historic vessel.

Archeologists estimate that thousands of artifacts – jointly owned by Inuit and the Government of Canada – exist at the site of the Terror and its

sister ship, HMS Erebus.

“We're very, very enthusiastic about what we stand to find in the future,” Harris said.

There was no plan to retrieve any artifacts from the Terror this season.

However, Parks Canada's dive crew has moved on to the Erebus and they're aiming to bring some of the items from that ship to the surface until mid-September.

A brown bottle was one of the first objects fetched from Erebus on Aug. 26. It will be sent to an Ottawa laboratory for analysis, along with other retrieved artifacts. Select items from the Erebus will be taken to Gjoa Haven and temporarily put on display for residents at the conclusion of this summer's exploration.

Archeological assistant Jonathan Puqiqnak, who hails from Gjoa Haven, is getting a sneak peek at the artifacts as he's joined the dive crew aboard the research vessel RV David Thompson.

“It's new for me, a new experience,” said Puqiqnak, who's had an interest in archeology since being introduced to the subject during his school years.

He's spending his days maintaining the divers' tanks and compressors, coordinating between the boat and barge and cleaning the retrieved artifacts. There's been talk of Puqiqnak, who has worked with the Inuit Guardians during the past two summers, trying some dive training in the future.

All 129 Franklin crew members ultimately perished after the Erebus and Terror became lodged in Arctic ice in 1846. The trapped ships eventually sank while attempting to traverse the Northwest Passage on

behalf of Britain, under the guidance of explorer Sir John Franklin.

Franklin ship artifacts will be displayed at the Nattilik Heritage Centre in Gjoa Haven in the years to come. Upon the conclusion of the Inuit Impact and Benefit Agreement with Parks Canada, the Kitikmeot Inuit Association will take the lead

on expanding the heritage centre.

Work on that project is expected to begin “in earnest” in early 2020, said Jason Bouzanis, Parks Canada's national director of communications.

Bouzanis added that the budget for this year's underwater expedition won't be tabulated until all the work is complete.

Trump's Greenland quest hits close to home Northern News Services

In this post-colonial era, we are faced with the emergence of new colonial powers. As China spreads its money to make resource-rich Africa a continent of dependent countries, U.S. President Donald Trump ponders his next move.

Like Chinese President Xi Jinping, Trump has his eyes on a resource-rich nation, but this one is much closer to home for Nunavummiut: Greenland.

The idea of purchasing Greenland may sound silly to pundits.

Even Mette Frederiksen, prime minister of Denmark, the kingdom of which Greenland is a constituent country, dismissed the idea as “absurd.”

“Open for business, not for sale,” the Ministry of Foreign Affairs tweeted. In The Guardian, Inuit Ataqatigiit party MP Aaja Chemnitz Larsen simply said “no thanks.”

At first glance, the idea seems laughable, the rantings of a president whose off-the-cuff tweets have the power to twist nations in knots.

But make no mistake: the desire to own Greenland is more than an attention grab or deflection from more important issues.

porting Greenland is a burden, which Danish politicians deny. A deeper read, recently reported by Bloomberg and others, is that the Americans are after rare-earth minerals.

And as global temperatures rise and Greenland's glaciers melt, look, too, to a future in which Texas and California are too hot to be inhabitable and cities on the coast of the Gulf of Mexico are underwater. Despite the denial of climate change permeating Washington, someone must be admitting that, eventually, Americans will need to move north.

So if Greenland is off the table, will Donald Trump look to another ally to sell its resource-rich Arctic territory? Would Nunavut be for sale, and would Nunavummiut be better off under American control?

After decades of getting the federal government to recognize the unique Inuit identity of the territory, there's unlikely to be much appetite for this here at home. And Jus-

tin Trudeau's Liberals have spent the last few months on the precampaign trail promising oodles of money for Nunavut and the other territories. Trudeau checked off all of Nunavut's Christmas list items – including an agreement-in-principle on devolution! – and Conservative leader Andrew Scheer promised he would honour all of the prime minister's commitments.

This stands in contrast to Trump's treatment of Puerto Rico, an American territory, which lies directly in the annual path of hurricanes. Trump's reaction to a devastating 2017 hurricane was “ineffective,” according to the mayor of the capital city. Rather than step up, Trump criticized the island's leaders. USA Today reports that recovery funds have been slow to come, and this week, the island's three million residents were bracing for the next hurricane.

It's hardly a good sign for Nunavut and its list of funding needs.

Plus, the last thing a territory working to recover from the colonial era needs is a colonial overlord, especially one his opponents are now openly calling a racist and white supremacist.

Stress, pressure and tension

How many times have you said, “I can handle it”, and then realize, “I can't really”? Things happen and we become stumped with the predicament we find ourselves in.

Our intentions are good and our attitude is lined up but circumstances and situations can change the course of a life in a heartbeat. Most of the situations are in a controlled manner while other situations are beyond our control and that can be disconcerting.

Being in control comes with determination, strong will and clear thinking. This is where balance and stability comes into the situation. If you are grounded and strong, there is not much that can move or shake you. You are mature enough to know that this will pass over and things will come back to normal or near normal as possible.

On the other hand if you are using substances every time something comes up, things can go wrong fast and hard. You don't think or plan clearly and it's everybody else's fault that things went wrong. We do come under fire now and then with mental or emotional strain as a result of adverse or very demanding circumstances and you can name and recognize a lot of this; there is

pressure from work, family tensions, emotional and mental fatigue, financial woes and on it goes. If you would just stop for a moment and take a deep breath and think about how you want to handle the situation or circumstance, often times you will find a way. While underground at the Lupin Gold Mine we had a theme which reminded us to stop and think or stop and take a breath and it was Take 5.

It does sound easier said than done, but when push comes to shove, your maturity level will carry you through. Your resourcefulness and development of skills through practice and effort will pay off.

Iqaluit mayor won't run for reelection Iqaluit In an Aug. 27 statement, Mayor Madeleine Redfern announced she will not seek reelection this fall.

In her statement, Redfern talks about the challenges and opportunities faced by the growing capital, citing more than $1 billion of actual and projected development during her term.

“A new airport, a deep-sea port, a small craft harbour, a new fibre optic link to Greenland, the new and renovated Arctic College buildings, the new and renovated jails, two new hotels, an upgraded wastewater treatment plant, a new solid waste management facility, a new brewery, a new bar, a new federal daycare, as well as newly paved and repaired roads,” she cited.

“Furthermore, there will be 1000 housing units coming online in the next three to five years.”

Noting the situation with independent MP Hunter Tootoo, Redfern said she's had to learn how to lobby the federal government directly, which has led to more productive relationships.

Redfern called on the “best and brightest Inuit” to get involved by running for city council.

“I remain convinced, if Inuit lose the capital, we will lose control of the territory and the vision and objectives of the Nunavut Agreement,” she said.

Redfern also urged women to get involved in city politics.

"There remains a glaring gender imbalance.

As mayor I do not get to vote on council, I only get to break ties. The mayor's job is one of influence, not power. With no women around the

table, Iqaluit's women effectively have had no vote for most of this past term," she said.

Donated school supplies ease return to school Ikaluktutiak/Cambridge Bay Students have returned to school in Cambridge Bay and for a few dozen of them there are no worries about having classroom supplies thanks to donations from community members.

Tasha Tologanak organized a donation drive that resulted in 26 backpacks being turned over to the elementary and secondary schools to distribute to students in need.

“I was a drop-out student and struggled in school. I went back to school and pursued postsecondary (culinary arts) so I know how it feels to struggle at school,” Tologanak said. “I hope these school supplies will motivate students to stay in school and be excited to have these supplies.”

The elementary backpacks include two notebooks, a pencil case filled with pencils, erasers and pencil crayons. The high school backpacks contain a notebook, pencils, pens, a scientific calculator and binders.

Char fishing on Murchison River Uqsuqtuuq/Gjoa Haven Several fishers were planning to depart for Murchison River on Aug. 28 to catch approximately 3,600 kilograms of char.

Various sized nets would be used to help determine the health of the fish stocks, said Peter Van Coeverden de Groot, a biology

researcher with Queen's University. The community is attempting to determine whether a commercial char fishery would be viable.

The existing char quota for the river was imposed about 35 years ago and “things have changed substantially,” said de Groot.

“What's the biological productivity of the fishery? Is it purely going to support a subsistence fishery or is there excess production to support a commercial fishery? That's what we're trying to figure out,” he explained.

The fishing spot is close to 110 km from the community. A couple of elders from the community are playing key advisory roles in the initiative, de Groot said.

The Hamlet of Gjoa Haven has funding through the Department of Economic Development and Transportation to perform a market evaluation and evaluate the cost of production, among other things, de Groot added.

Riit's debut album to be released in October Nunavut New music is on the way from Pangnirtung songstress Riit.

Her debut full-length album, ataataga, which will feature eight tracks, is scheduled to be released on Oct. 25. At least one single will be available before then: #uvangattau is set to drop this Friday. It's a collaboration with rhythm and blues artist Zaki Ibrahim. “#uvangattau is both fight and flight, a reckoning with fear and violence,” according to a news release from Six Shooter Records, which produced the album.

New executive director for Chamber Ikaluktutiak/Cambridge Bay Valter Botelho-Resendes was recently hired as executive director for the Kitikmeot Chamber of Commerce.

He replaces Cynthia Ene, who is returning to consulting after having served as the chamber's executive director since the organization was revived in July 2017.

Botelho-Resendes was in the process of registering his own small business in the community when he learned of the job opportunity.

“I was just looking to get involved somehow,” he said. “The next thing I knew I was interviewing for the role and they thought I was a good candidate.”

He has previous business experience from having launched a print shop and a landscaping company in the south.

Possessing a passion for mentoring youth, he's hoping to hear from some of the community's young adults in regards to initiatives that could benefit them.

“They're the next generation of business owners,” he said.

Botelho-Resendes, who came to Cambridge Bay from Baker Lake with his wife, a nurse, in March, said his initial impressions of Cambridge Bay have been positive.

“I love the community,” he said. “I noticed it was a really friendly community right off the get-go. So far it's been great.

I've interacted with a lot of people and gotten to know a lot of the business owners.”

Anaana's Camp in Cambridge Bay has been set up at Jack's Point. Grandmothers and mothers wanted ways to reconnect with youth in teaching of the culture, traditions of Inuinnait. It is a place of love and peace for everyone. Tea is always on, and of course bannock. The camp hopes to operate year-round and school children will also visit the

camp. Some visitors of children from the science camp Actua visited this summer. In the cold winter months, most teachings and activities will be held at the Elder's Palace right in town.

Listening to the stories of the old days of our grandmothers growing up on the land is a way to spend an afternoon with tea, bannock and love.

The most precious moments when a qulliq is being lit. A ceremony to officially open Anaana's Camp up at Jack's Point in Cambridge Bay. Here is dear Elder Bessie Pihoak Omigoetok lighting the qulliq and speaking of her upbringing out on the land.

Pihoak slicing seal fat to prepare to light the qulliq. She will place the cut-up slices in a bowl and they will turn to oil in minutes. They will then be put into the qulliq along with the Arctic cotton used as a wick to make a fire.

Pihoak is preparing the seal hide and scraping excess water/oill. It will then be ready to air dry before it is nailed to plywood.

New Era takes final in thrilling Calm Air Cup mixed championship

Tournament softball brings out the best in teams and when it comes to New Era, their best came when it mattered the most.

New Era pulled off a quarterfinal comeback for the ages on its way to the recent 2019 Calm Air Cup mixed softball championship in Rankin Inlet.

They trailed the Senators by five runs in its final at bat during the quarterfinal on Aug. 11.

The team's first two batters made outs but, with only one out to work with, New Era stormed back and scored six runs to steal the victory.

From there, New Era demolished the tour-

ney favourite Salliq (Coral Harbour) Invaders 16-4 in its semifinal and nipped the Rockies 11-10 in a thrilling final, turning a double play to end the game and claim the Calm Air Cup. New Era captain Darren Ikakhik said meeting the Rockies in the tournament's final game made it all that more special.

He said there has been a long rivalry between New Era and the Rockies (formerly known as the Juggernauts), and he's sometimes invited to play on their team in various tournaments from year to year.

“There's no doubt in my mind that the quarterfinal victory was the turning point for our team,” said Ikakhik.

“We had two outs, were down five runs in the final inning, and should have been done in

Learn about money Nunavut Recreation North, the training initiative between the three territorial recreation and parks associations, is getting going with its course instruction for the new year.

The first course will be Basic Recreation Finances, which will start on Sept. 12 and will happen through a series of

Ikakhik said the rain didn't affect play that much because there was no real wind accompanying it.

“We've played this tournament with this kind of weather almost every year. Everyone's gotten used to it by now, so we just live with

conference calls. The course is designed to give people a basic understanding of how to responsibly handle financial information in recreation and how to plan, track and report on both money coming in along with any money being spent on events, projects and programming.

There are two conference calls planned and they will happen on Sept. 12 and Sept. 19 beginning between 10 a.m. PDT and 1 p.m. EDT. You can register through the Recreation North website.

It's Mass Registration and it's all happening on Sept. 7 with a start time of 11 a.m. It's perhaps the best chance for people to

“There were a lot of competitive teams in the tournament this year because a number of players moved around a bit to different teams, which really evened-up the teams quite a bit, and both Coral and Arviat (Arctic Connectors) sent good teams.

“There were a few blowout games during the tournament, but most of the playoff round was close and very exciting for the players and the fans.

“From what I understand, winning the Calm Air Cup this year means we'll get to travel to Kelowna, B.C., to compete in the SloPitch National (SPN) during the August 2020 long weekend.”

Several sports and recreation groups have used the day in past years as an opportunity to get people involved and have them become part of their organization.

Hockey registration begins Iqaluit The Iqaluit Hockey League is gearing up for its 2019-2020 season. The first order of business is for prospective players to sign up to play in the league and that got going on Aug. 28.

The league does things differently from most other rec hockey leagues in that players don't simply join a team to play – each player signs up as a player and is then entered into the league draft, which is happening on Sept. 26 this year.

The deadline to get your registration form in is Sept. 25.

Summer fun all over for another year Get Happy Summer Day Camp wraps up 2019 season

The Get Happy Summer Day Camp, organized by the Recreation and Parks Association of Nunavut (RPAN), wrapped up its fifth season late last month with 15 communities in all three regions participating. Whale Cove and Rankin Inlet were two of the new communities involved in the program this year.

Dawn Currie, RPAN's executive director, said the program has become the association's signature initiative and it showed again this year.

“Sanikiluaq and Whale Cove were two of our standout communities this year,” she said. “Taloyoak was really good also. People enjoy it so much and the people keep coming back every year. We had about 15 to 20 people this year who

were once participants in the program come back and become leaders.”

Everything began back in June with the staff training in Yellowknife. From there, the leaders went back to their home communities and planned six weeks worth of programming, which included a mixture of arts and crafts and sports-themed activities such as baseball and flag football.

There was also a summer sport camp pilot program which went to Coral Harbour, Iglulik and Rankin Inlet with Alayna Ningeongan of Rankin Inlet as the lead.

Currie said that was a successful start to something she hopes will grow.

“I'm confident we can move forward with it,” she said.

“Alayna and her team figured out what worked and what didn't and that's important because they were our eyes and ears on the ground. Hayden Hickey (of Iqaluit) was our day camp co-

ordinator and he did the same thing: figuring out what was working and what could be changed. We can plan and get all the money but we're only as successful as the people on the ground.”

The people on the ground are the important part, she added, because it's helping to build capacity in the territory.

“We're training young people and we're providing employment,” she said. “This is a great way to prepare them for the future and also giving communities people who have the organizational skills to run programs.”

Something new to the program this year was the Recreation North Youth Leader Certificate, which day camp leaders were able to obtain if they worked enough days during the camp.

“That was another first for us,” said Currie. “It shows we're growing even more.”

With another year down, the focus now turns to planning for 2020, which could feature an expanded program but not inside Nunavut.

Currie said there have been some initial discussions about taking the model outside to other Northern communities in provinces such as Manitoba.

“We've talked to places around The Pas and OCN (Opaskwayak Cree Nation),” she said. “The program is tailored to small communities and there are several smaller communities in those areas where we could see the program be successful.”

Expanding inside Nunavut may be a challenge, she added, simply because of training.

“There is room to grow but getting the people trained could be the issue,” she said. “Logistically, we're pretty close to the maximum of communities that could host the program. There's been tremendous growth, which shows it's been successful, but we may stay at the number we're at for now.”

Only time will tell but it will take a long time. to name a few. They managed to right the ship and come back to existence. I'm not saying it's impossible for Bury FC and if the fans and the community are willing to put in the long slog, it will happen.

Judging by the supporters' mood, Bury FC isn't dead. It's just on time out.
