Millions promised for north Baffin Conservation funds address infrastructure inequalities between Canada's North and south: QIA president Michele LeTourneau

Federal and territorial leaders gathered Aug. 1 in Iqaluit to celebrate a conservation deal that will see millions in community investments – including Inuit training and employment to the tune of $55 million and roughly $190 million in infrastructure dollars – for the northern Baffin region.

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau joined Premier Joe Savikataaq, Qikiqtani Inuit Association (QIA) president P.J. Akeeagok, Nunavut Tunngavik Inc. president Aluki Kotierk, and Inuit Tapiriit Kanatami president Natan Obed for a morning ceremony in Iqaluit, which then culminated with a community feast in Arctic Bay. "This project is for the people. It's for the people of Nunavut ... The promise of infrastructure and long-term support in the territory, anywhere in the territory, is welcome and appreciated, but so much more so in the High Arctic. They are left out more so from the economics of Canada than other parts of Nunavut. This is a very positive step," said Savikataaq.

Funding will be directed toward small-craft harbours and a training centre.

When Conservative leader Andrew Scheer visited Iqaluit in June, he said he would honour Liberal commitments should his party win the October federal election.

As the premier, and others, noted, decades of work went into the development of the protected areas known as Tallurutiup Imanga and Tuvaijuittuq – together totalling roughly 427,000 square kilometres. These areas also serve the country by bringing its marine protected areas to almost 14 per cent, surpassing the Liberal government's goal to protect 10 per cent of the country's marine and coastal areas by 2020.

Trudeau stated these are initiatives to help combat climate change.

But, as Savikataaq explicitly stated, there is much yet to be done to bring Nunavummiut up to par with fellow Canadians.

"The people who go to Arctic Bay will see how people really are. I encourage any federal representative, go to the store in Arctic Bay and look at the price of food. Go there. The cost of living is horrendous up here," he said.

Savikataaq then said the economic benefits of the new conservation deal would benefit the smaller High

Arctic communities.

Akeeagok said he was humbled to be present on this day to represent generations of Inuit.

"I stand proud because I stand with visionary leaders, like John Amagoalik, who is here with us today," he said.

Akeeagok also mentioned others who could not be present. It is thanks to their bold action, he said, that Tallurutiup Imanga and Tuvaijuittuq will be protected on Inuit terms.

"The work to protect our waters began in the 1960s and 1970s. Today's announcement is a culmination of decades of work to realize a collective dream," said Akeeagok.

"Inuit dreamed of a day when these waters would be protected. They imagined a day when Inuit would be true partners with the Government of Canada, working shoulder to shoulder to build the foundation of a new Arctic in the spirit of reconciliation."

Akeeagok noted that permanent protection of Arctic waters comes hand-in-hand with sustainable investments.

Former Iqaluit city councillor Megan Pizzo-Lyall, now of Rankin Inlet, will be Nunavut's Liberal candidate in the Oct. 21 federal election.

Introduced to Nunavummiut by Prime Minister Justin Trudeau in Iqaluit on Aug. 1, Pizzo-Lyall, 31, is originally from Taloyoak. She has been living in Rankin Inlet for almost

three years as manager of operations for Atuqtuarvik Corp.

Pizzo-Lyall has always been passionate about helping people, and has always been involved with the political scene on one level or another, including the National Inuit Council in her youth and her own "small town youth council stuff," she said.

"I always said if I could be in politics full-time, I would love it, because I really enjoy helping people

and I enjoy working at the political level to help make life better for all Nunavummiut," she said.

"I'm really passionate about bringing more badly-needed housing to Nunavut, and, to do that, we have to work hard to increase the amount of money that comes to Nunavut.

I also want to work to address the level of poverty in Nunavut, so housing, increased federal funding and attacking poverty in Nunavut is my agenda."

Pizzo-Lyall said she has an idea of what a territorial campaign and election will be like, but it's one of those things you will never truly understand until you go through it.

She said she knows she has lots of support from the Liberal Party, which she describes as having been really good to work with.

"I really enjoy living in Rankin Inlet. I found my second home there, so to speak," she said. "I have a cabin in Rankin and my feet are grounded in the community. The people there are truly amazing and so supportive of so many different initiatives.

"Rankin Inlet is a really good community to be a part of and I'm really proud to say that."

Pizzo-Lyall also loves the outdoors and is an accomplished hunter.

She said she's always loved being out on the land and hunting is a normal way of life in Nunavut.

"With election day already fast approaching, I plan to work hard at increasing (elector) turnout with a definite eye towards the younger voters in our territory. It's going to be a really great run."

Jonathan Hiqiniq turns 100 ᓄĪØflî

Gjoa Haven centenarian 'a strong man' who lives at home with family members

Jonathan Hiqiniq has lived to see 100 years, and he can't believe it himself, his youngest daughter says.

"He used to tell us that he thought he'd never come to 100 years old," says Susie Hiqiniq.

"He's so amazed today that he's still around."

Jonathan has close to 80 grandchildren, Susie estimates. He also has greatgrandchildren and even greatgreat-grandchildren.

He and his wife Martha, who passed away two years ago, had 13 children of their own. Seven of them are still alive.

Jonathan was raised on the land and came to Gjoa Haven when there was "just a little store and a couple of houses," says Bernice Tavalok, Jonathan's granddaughter.

Susie remembers being a young girl and watching him go off to work as a water, sewage and garbage truck driver for the growing hamlet and then coming home at the end of his shift. Most weekends he would take the family out on the land, she recalls.

Sometimes, as the weekend wound down, he would leave them at the family camp and he would return to town by himself to fulfill his work obligations. Then he'd come back to join his wife and children once again.

He was fond of storytelling, Susie says.

"Once he told us that while you're growing up, you guys always have to listen to your parents and grandparents, what they say. That's when you'll have a long life," she says.

She also remembers him teaching her how to raise dogs as he had a team to supervise.

"I learned a lot from my dad growing up," she says.

Bernice recalls Jonathan telling her how to travel in the winter among the snow drifts, how to make a shelter with a snow knife and where to watch for strong currents.

Jonathan also served as an Anglican minister in Gjoa Haven for many years, until his vision deteriorated and he was no longer able to read, says Susie.

Today, he resides in a fourbedroom house surrounded by family members, other relatives coming and going

throughout the day.

"He's been telling us that he wants to watch his grandchildren and his daughters and sons. He says it's better to be in his home," Susie says. "He has a lot of support ... he's happy watching his family."

Bernice says, "He's a strong man. He's still trying to do stuff on his own today."

He still walks on his own and carries on a conversation in Inuktitut, she adds.

There were two celebrations held in Hiqiniq's honour recently. His family gathered at his home on his July 27th birthday. They indulged in a small feast and played party games. He was given lots of gifts.

"We know he doesn't go out hunting anymore so we give him cups, water bottles, teapot, socks, sweaters, slippers," Susie says. "Everybody had a fun time. It was nice to see a lot of people."

Then on July 29, a function was held at the community hall that included a traditional drum dance. Close to 60 people showed up, says Bernice.

"He really enjoyed that," Susie says.

Niore Iqalukjuak, a former mayor of Arctic Bay, says these rusting barrels at the former Nanisivik airport contain dry chemicals for use in fire extinguishers.

The Nanisivik airport, originally built to serve the community of Arctic Bay and a lead zinc mine in the 1970s, closed in early 2011 when the Arctic Bay airport went into service. Niore Iqalukjuak, who visited the site in July, says the soil in the foreground is darker due to leaking fuel, which is also noticeable by its odour.

In Nunavut, there is never enough money to go around. With the deep need for housing, health, education and basic social supports, governments rightly devote their attentions and as many dollars as possible on making progress on these fundamental concerns that affect all Nunavummiut.

With these at the forefront, the pot of money quickly becomes a spoonful remaining for the optional line items, specifically cultural and entertainment activities.

The recent Alianait festival, the first under its second ever executive director, reminds us of the value of core funding. Here we have a popular and impressive weekend of Inuit and circumpolar artists traveling to Nunavut to share their own culture while supporting Nunavut's. Friendships and partnerships are made, and Nunavut's brand spreads.

By letting people know that Inuit are here and that this is more than a land to be exploited for natural resources, we create an opportunity to impress our own stamp on the map of the North and of Canada. We need reasons for outsiders – industrialists and tourists alike – to invest their time and money here. Resources are one, culture is another.

An intervenor's role Northern News Services

An intervenor is a person or an organization that is not necessarily against an idea or project, but is there to ask questions and to make sure the plans and directives are followed and followed up on.

An advocate speaks on behalf of those who seem to have no voice; the elderly, homeless, the child. This individual will go to any length to bring forward the concerns and situations to those in authority or to the ones who can provide and facilitate programs and services for their betterment.

There is an air of assertiveness in these roles, but there is also commitment and vision that drives these roles.

If a company introduced to the community a private air charter service, then as an intervenor questions the availability of qualified pilots with experience, a competent ground crew for refuelling and general airside services such as loading and unloading and expediting needs. Infrastructure would have to be looked at for winter storage and a general intake area or passenger check-in counter would be needed. Perhaps a history of the company could be looked at in light of safety and record of the new charter service.

Both intervenor and advocate play an essential role in the delivery of well-planned services on behalf of people who need this particular service. In each of our communities across Nunavut we find these types of individuals intervening and advocating in times of crisis. Although societal values and the direct approach of the IQ principles are practised, people are still falling through the cracks in the maze of bureaucracy and seem to be left out until a voice is heard.

It is always hoped that situations and circumstances will not be ignored until it is too late. You can be an intervenor and an advocate for those in need.

Hunter Tootoo won't run this fall Independent MP, elected as Liberal, to enter private sector with family member

Nunavut's independent MP Hunter Tootoo announced July 30 he will not seek reelection in the upcoming October federal election, choosing instead to enter the private sector.

Tootoo told Nunavut News it was a difficult decision.

"I really appreciate the encouragement and support that I've received from Nunavummiut across the territory over the past months, but after much consideration, I made the decision to leave public life and I will not be running in the upcoming federal election," said Tootoo.

"For most of the past 20 years, it has been a great honour and privilege to serve the people of Nunavut, both as an MLA and as an MP." Tootoo thanked his family, friends and parliamentary colleagues who helped him through a difficult period in his life.

"I have grown, healed, and I believe I'm a better per-

son for it. I encourage anyone who suffers from addictions, mental illness or trauma to seek the help they need, and remember that they are not alone."

Tootoo was elected as a Liberal MP in October 2015, but in May 2016 resigned from his post as Minister of Fisheries, Oceans and the Canadian Coast Guard, and from the Liberal caucus. At that time, he sought help to overcome alcohol addiction.

First elected to hamlet council in Rankin Inlet in the late 1990s, Tootoo lost to Nancy Karetak-Lindell in the 1997 federal election, then successfully ran in Nunavut's first territorial election.

Tootoo would go on to serve several terms, including serving as Speaker.

Regarding his time as an independent MP, he said he contributed to positive change for Nunavut. "(In Nunavut) we have a consensus government. There is a group of elected individuals who work together to do the right thing for everybody.

And coming from that, I think I was able to bring that with me here (in Ottawa) and work with members of all political stripes, as well as my cabinet colleagues. I'm proud of the things I've been able to accomplish," he said, adding his job was not just about sticking a knife in the prevailing government's back.

"There are important issues (in Nunavut), let's find a way to deal with them."

Tootoo noted that in the past four years, the federal government invested more than $2 billion in Nunavut, over and above federal transfers.

He thanked Nunavummiut and his family, while saying he would be entering the business world to support a family member. He declined to elaborate, but did say he would live in Iqaluit.

"Family comes first. A family member asked me for some help in the private sector. So that's what I'm going to be doing," Tootoo said.

As for the upcoming federal election, Tootoo empha-

sized he would not support any one candidate, but will watch with interest.

"I've always said it takes a lot of courage for someone to put their name forward to run for public office, because automatically you have a target on you. There's so many people out there that will complain and belittle, but they're never the ones that are willing to step forward and have the courage to put their name on a ballot and try and do something about it," said Tootoo.

"Anyone that does, I think it's good. And the more people run, the more choice that people have and that's what democracy is all about."

So far, Conservative Leona Aglukkaq is the only candidate to officially announce her intention for the upcoming October federal election.

"When you're constrained with party lines, you're not able to raise issues in a positive way," Tootoo said, adding Nunavut senator Dennis Patterson is an example of this phenomenon. "We're probably

Bikes on the way to Cambridge Bay Ikaluktutiak/Cambridge Bay The Polar Bike Project will distribute 105 donated bicycles in Cambridge Bay this year.

The bikes are going to be given away to children at an event Aug. 18.

Alison Harper, who launched the Polar Bike Project with her husband Tim in 2015, said they work closely with community agencies to identify youngsters who don't already own a bicycle and cannot afford one.

"We try our hardest to make it as fair as possible with the amount of bikes that we are able to get into the community," Alison Harper stated. "If there is a family with multiple children that do not have a bike, we will try to give at least one bike for the kids to share."

The bicycles are contributed by residents in the south, some from individuals and families who no longer need them while others have been recovered after being abandoned. Bicycle shops volunteer to fix the ones in disrepair.

Most of the bikes are delivered by airlines from places like Calgary and Okotoks, Alta., and Invermere, B.C. Another batch originating from Vancouver is en route aboard a Canadian Coast Guard ship.

The Harpers lived in Kugluktuk in 2014 and the first shipment of bikes went there the following year.

"We saw the need for bikes in the community and what they can do for kids and families," said Alison. "We choose a different community each year. This will be the last community in the Kitikmeot region for us to visit. We are hoping to continue this project next year, but no plans with which community yet."

Cambridge Bay swimming pool deemed unsafe, closed for rest of summer Ikaluktutiak/Cambridge Bay Cambridge Bay residents won't be swimming at the community pool this summer, as structural deficiencies at the base of the pool have led the hamlet to close the facility for safety reasons.

The decision was made July 29 when it was detected that corrosion from chlorine had rotted away the structure at the bottom of the pool, said Marla Limousin, the community's senior administrative officer.

"We probably need to get a new pool," Limousin stated.

The swimming pool had opened for the season on July 1.

It was scheduled to remain in use for the first three weeks of August.

There's no option to convert to a waterfront program because lifeguards require specific training for outdoor supervision on the coastline, Limousin noted.

"Also the weather here has been cool and rainy, so it's not a great option at the moment," she said.

The pool staff consisted of three lifeguards brought up from the south and one local resident. As of earlier this week, the hamlet was still deciding how to deal with compensation for the lifeguards in light of the pool season concluding earlier than planned.

Connie Arqviq catches winning char, earns flight Uqsuqtuuq/Gjoa Haven Close to 90 participants took to the water and lined the shore around Gjoa Haven – from the bay point to near the airport – as they competed in the annual Char Mania fishing derby from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. on July 27.

Connie Arqviq was in possession of the longest Arctic char, measuring 87.5 cm. That earned her a Canadian North airline ticket.

Second place, which amounted to $500, went to Isaiah Palongayak, whose fish was only a centimetre shorter than the winner.

Joanni Sallerina took home $400 for third place with an 86 cm char.

Helen Kaloon and Peter Kogvik Jr. split the $300 for fourth place.

Four donated ambulances from Ontario bound for Nunavut communities Region of Peel, Ontario Cape Dorset, Iglulik, Clyde River and Taloyoak will be receiving donated emergency response vehicles on sealift thanks to the Region of Peel in Ontario.

The Peel regional government and its paramedics decided to ship the retired ambulances from their fleet to Nunavut. The vehicles, which are several years old, were driven to Quebec to be loaded on barges earlier this week.

"It's a good deal for Nunavut, for sure," said Brian Fleming, executive director of the Nunavut Association of Municipalities, who added that the communities are only required to cover the cost of shipping.

The search is on for a fifth used ambulance because the City of Iqaluit is looking for a replacement for its backup, Fleming noted. The donation will make a big difference in Iglulik, said senior administrative officer Greg Morash.

"When you're transporting patients in the back of a half-ton (truck) or whatever, it's not pleasant," he said, referring to the practice that had been used for many years. "So at least now they'll be warm and comfortable (in the back of an ambulance) ... it will be better care for the patients."

Morash added that the ambulances – each equipped with a stretcher – have been excellently maintained and are in "tip-top" condition.

Initial contract for long-term care centres awarded

The winner of Gjoa Haven's Char Mania fishing derby on July 27 was Connie Arqviq. She reeled in an 87.5 cm Arctic char and thereby captured a Canadian North airline ticket, the event's top prize.

Nunavut The Government of Nunavut has selected Winnipeg-based FT3 Architecture Landscape Interior Design to provide design and construction administration services for three new long-term facilities in the territory.

The value of the tender award remains under wraps, however.

The GN is treating the information as confidential.

The Kivalliq and Kitikmeot communities that will each host a 24-bed long-term care centre are yet to be determined, according to a GN spokesperson. Iqaluit will be the site of a 108-bed facility for the Qikiqtaaluk region.

The tender document indicates that the design phase for the projects won't be complete until early 2020. Construction is anticipated to begin in fall 2020.

Long-term care residents are expected to start occupying the new facilities as of winter 2022 or spring 2023.

Seeking peace after unimaginable loss Fire survivors Nina Kautuq and son headed to Winnipeg to meet medical team who cared for husband and father

Four years after a devastating tent fire claimed all but one member of her immediate family, Nina Kautuq is travelling to Winnipeg to meet with the medical team who cared for her husband Ikie before he died.

"There's a piece I need to find," said Kautuq.

Kautuq was not with Ikie when he passed.

She was in Ottawa, receiving care with her children, aged two to 11. Kautuq and Jutanie, then two, were the only survivors.

The family of six was camping two hours west of Pond Inlet in August 2015 when a fire broke out in the tent in which they slept.

"That was difficult for me. Why they didn't have us all together in one place ... I have never really heard the whole story. I was told he was in ICU (intensive care unit) in Winnipeg, then the next day I knew he died," said Kautuq.

She has never seen her husband's body.

"Sometimes I look for him. I know that he's dead, but sometimes my mind just plays with me. It says, 'Maybe he's not dead. Maybe he's pretending. What if he just walks in,'" she said. "I'm really hoping that meeting the ICU team and hearing the whole story will help me to stop searching and waiting for him."

Former nurse Teresa Perryman organized the trip to Winnipeg hoping to help her friend of more than 10 years find greater peace.

Nina Kautuq and her son Jutanie will travel to Winnipeg Aug. 4 to meet the team who took care of her husband Ikie before he died after sustaining injuries from a tent fire outside Pond Inlet in August 2015. While the trip is mostly funded, Kautuq is asking for a bit of help for the overnights in Ottawa via a Go Fund Me campaign. care of, but there are a few nights in Ottawa that need funding. "Nina, her family, and I had grown a friendship," said Perryman, who first met Kautuq while working in Clyde River and

later in Pond Inlet.

Perryman recalls Ottawa nurses sending hearts with messages for the grieving wife and mother.

"I took Nina out for a drive. I started reading them to her because it was so emotional for her. We were close," said Perryman, who recalls how much meeting the Ottawa medical team mattered to her friend.

Kautuq added, "This winter, we met the ICU team and doctors that took care of my three children prior to their passing. That helped me so much. I think meeting the ICU team that took care of my husband will help me."

Perryman will attend the meeting via conference call to support her friend.

"That makes me feel better. She's very supportive. I am so thankful for her, for helping with this. She made everything possible. I thank her so much, all the way to my core," said Kautuq.

Her voice brightens when she speaks of Jutanie, who will turn seven in November and will travel with her to Winnipeg.

"He's doing so much better. He's becoming a kid, like I wanted him to be. I didn't want him to become aggressive, and not being like a child. He is becoming a child. I'm happy for that," she said.

"He was only two when the accident happened, but he remembers the majority of it. He remembers his siblings, his father, what had happened. He tells stories. He's able to talk with someone who he's comfortable with."

Nunavummiut make the least use of early learning and child care services in the country, according to new data from Statistics Canada.

Only 36.7 per cent of Nunavummiut children aged zero to five years are dropped off at daycare, a preschool program, left with a relative or taken to a private caregiver.

The next lowest jurisdiction is Manitoba at 50.5 per cent. Quebec leads the way at 78.2 per cent. The Canadian average is 59.9 per cent, according to Statistics Canada.

The primary reasons given for not using child care in Nunavut were that one parent decided to stay home (28.9 per cent) and unemployment (23.9 per cent).

For those seeking child care, difficulty finding it is not much more of an impediment in Nunavut than

in Canada overall, the survey results show. In Nunavut, 39.6 per cent of respondents reported challenges finding child care while the national average was 36.4 per cent.

Affordability was only mentioned as a hurdle by approximately six per cent of Nunavummiut who participated in the survey.

In the territory, a daycare centre, preschool or childcare centre represented the most common form of child care at 57 per cent compared to 33.8 per cent who rely on a relative.

The Department of Education, which oversees child care in Nunavut, is striving to make child care more accessible by requiring new schools to have early childhood programs; increasing funding for licensed facilities while stipulating that fees charged to parents not be raised; giving more funding to the Young Parents Stay Learning Program so they can keep working towards their high school

At one point, a local group formed with a goal of launching an Inuktitut daycare but it "just seemed to die off," Mikkungwak said.

"As an MLA I try and do my rounds and get out into the public, and as a grandfather also it's very evident," Mikkungwak said, referring to what he sees and hears about the shortage of local daycare spaces.

Although the Baker Lake Day Care Centre isn't on the verge of expansion yet, one new development is an extension of operations. The service had shut down seasonally in past years when schools closed, but the daycare has remained open this summer.

Things have been going well over the past several weeks, but it will be up to the board of directors to assess whether remaining open for summer will become permanent, Bouska said.

Nunavut prepares for the big show Wrestling, indoor volleyball and beach volleyball athletes heading to Western Canada Summer Games

As of today, there are exactly four days until the start of the 2019 Western Canada Summer Games in Swift Current, Sask. The opening ceremony will kick things off on Aug. 9 and Nunavut will march in with the other five teams competing; B.C. doesn't send athletes to the Western Canada Summer Games.

Nunavut will be the smallest team at the Games with wrestling, indoor volleyball and beach volleyball being the sports the territory will compete in over the course of the 10-day event. Let's take a look at each sport and break down what each team can expect to see: Beach volleyball There aren't many beaches in the territory but Volleyball Nunavut felt it would be worth a shot to enter beach volleyball teams for the first time ever in actual competition.

Two teams – one each in male and female – will make history and wear the colours when the beach volleyball competition gets going on Aug. 10. The female team will play two games on opening day as they take on Manitoba Gold and Saskatchewan White in pool play while the male team will square off with Manitoba Gold and Alberta Grey.

When interviewed by Nunavut News last month, Volleyball Nunavut's executive director Scott Schutz said this is the first step in what he hopes will be many for the territory on the sand.

"It's different but I think this will catch on," he said. "We're excited about the possibilities and you never know where it will go from here."

If you've never seen beach volleyball, it's a smaller version of the indoor game with teams of two rather than the usual six. The court is slightly smaller (8m by 16m vs. 9m by 18m for indoor) with the same system of sideout scoring on each rally. A team wins a set by getting to 21 first – winning by two points – and all matches are a best-of-three sets.

Schutz said the trip to Swift Current is merely to find out where things sit.

"We want to figure out where we are," he said. "Our ultimate goal is working toward the 2021 Canada Summer Games and this if the first step. All of our players should still be eligible for that so hopefully they'll think about that."

Manitoba will be the opening opponent for both teams on Aug. 14 and it will be a busy tournament as indoor volleyball is a sport where every jurisdiction has a team.

Only the top four will make the playoffs in each division, meaning Nunavut will have to win at least two games on each side in order to have any hope to get in.

The games against the NWT and Yukon are the ones the teams will most likely be targeting for success, but a win over one of the provincial teams would take the pressure off of winning both of their games versus the other territories.

Running for fun Iqaluit One Plane Away is a non-profit organization in Nunavut whose goal is to collect and distribute gently-used infant clothing around the territory.

The group is hosting an event called the Pitter Patter Fun Run in Iqaluit on Aug. 10 to help raise money and increase awareness for its work.

Wrestling Nunavut's wrestling contingent will be the largest of any team from North of 60 as 13 grapplers from around the territory will hit the mats.

Wrestling is conducted in the team format, meaning points are earned toward a total for each duel. A match win gives a wrestler the maximum five points toward their team's total.

Chris Crooks was interviewed by Nunavut News last month and he said this was one of the largest contingents ever to attend a competition.

Everything gets underway at 10 a.m. and there are several distances for competitors to take on, including 5-km, 10-km and a 21-km half-marathon along with a 1-km family walk/run.

After everything comes to an end, there will be turf time at the Arctic Winter Games Arena with a bouncy castle and barbecue as part of the post-race activities.

Slo-pitch title up for grabs Kangiqliniq/Rankin Inlet One of the big slo-pitch tournaments in Nunavut is on the horizon.

The Calm Air Cup, hosted by the Rankin Inlet Co-Ed Softball League, gets underway on Aug. 7 with four teams entered as of press time: the Juggernauts, New Era and the Cubs, all from Rankin Inlet, along with the Salliq Invaders from Coral Harbour.

The round-robin is scheduled to get going on Aug. 7 and

classes from this past January's Nunavut Wrestling Championships first crack at punching their ticket to Swift Current.

To Crooks' surprise, they all accepted.

"We put out the offers to them and they all said they wanted to go," he said. "There was room for one of our second-place finishers to make the trip and he's going as well."

Eekeeluak Avalak of Cambridge Bay is expected to be the strongest male wrestler while Kristen McCallum, also from Cambridge Bay, will anchor the female team.

Unlike volleyball, the top three spots will be determined by whoever wins the most duels.

Coral Harbour versus the country Halifax Speaking of the Salliq Invaders, they were busy at the 2019 edition of the Slo Pitch National Canadian Championships.

The Invaders were in Halifax to do battle in the co-ed E division, where they had four games in the round-robin to get their position for the playoffs. They took on teams from Nova Scotia and Ontario on Aug. 2 followed by teams from Newfoundland and Labrador and Ontario the following day.

Project to show how fish population is faring

A $20 reward is being offered to fishers in the Kivalliq region who bring in the stomach contents and muscle from their catch of Arctic char to their local hunters and trappers organizations (HTO).

The project is being run by Fisheries and Oceans Canada in partnership with HTOs across the region.

Kangiqliniq HTO spokesperson Clayton Tartak of Rankin Inlet said the project started during a meeting with Fisheries and Oceans Canada in February.

He said during that meeting, a point of knowledge raised by Naujaat elder Paul Malliki kick-started the process.

"He told the meeting he was

taught as a kid to check the stomach contents of fish he caught, and he still does that today," said Tartak.

"From the conversation we had following Paul's statements, it was determined that we could do a scientific study on stomach content – a stable isotope analysis that tells you what the fish are eating.

"Six of the seven Kivalliq communities are participating in this project, with only Baker Lake not involved."

Tartak said fishers pick up the sample bags at their local HTO and, when they catch fish, they simply take out the guts and a small piece of flesh and put them into the two bags provided.

He said the bags are then stored in a freezer to await being shipped to a lab in Winnipeg for both a stable

isotope analysis and a stomach content analysis.

"We'll have a far better understanding of how our fish population is doing once we have those results, and they should also tell us why some of our fish aren't as red anymore, so that will be interesting to see," he said.

"There's no real concerns with the process as it's pretty straight-forward work, but it's work well worth doing.

"Moving forward, we're hoping to expand this project into other parts of the ecosystem to ultimately include everything from shrimp or krill up to beluga whales and polar bears.

"Right now, we're looking at planning for the next three years of data collection and, at that time, it will be decided if the project is still worthwhile to continue with."
