Marine ship training 'as real life as possible'

The Nunavut Fisheries and Marine Training Consortium is offering two rounds of pre-training courses in Iqaluit come September, as well as another round of the Kisarvik Program.

"The pre-training program is really an introduction to what the marine industry is all about," said executive director Elizabeth Cayen.

"First of all, we want to make sure, for them, that they're really interested in the marine industry because a lot of times they hear things.

"They always hear about the big money. But are they really suited for that life?"

The course is two weeks long and run like life on a ship.

"You have to be in your seat at 8:30 because if you aren't the ship has sailed," said Cayen.

Drugs and alcohol are absolutely not allowed and accommodations need to be kept shipshape "And we try to use marine terms as much as possible.

Even in terms of time. If your class starts at 1:00 p.m., it starts at 13:00.

Cayen says absolutely anyone in Nunavut can apply.

The Kisarvik Program includes some pre-training material, but adds Bridge Watch 1 – a course that prepares students to be employed as safe and efficient workers on board a marine vessel. A successful student will exit the course with a number of certificates.

Kisarvik, first run as a pilot program in the fall of 2016, was designed to also teach essential life skills, including literacy, numeracy, problem-solving, form-filling, budgeting and banking

and resume-writing.

As co-ordinating instructor Capt. Randy Pittman has previously explained, Kisarvik means safe place to anchor, save haven, good bottom and good foundation.

"It's meant for people who have more than one challenge. Let's face it everybody in Nunavut has challenges – we're a rural community across the board so that is challenging in itself. With Kisarvik we try to aim for the younger crowd, so 18 to 30, 35," said Cayen.

"A lot of them won't have high school. They may have challenges with never having left home. They don't know what that's all about. They may have challenges academically. They'll have challenges maybe with things like daycare or family challenges. A lot of them have never gone to high school."

Cayen said some Kisarvik students apply for the program by way of a high school teacher who sees the potential, but the young person has never had the chance to prove themselves.

"We are a strict operation.

"We try to make it as real life as possible. One of the things that we try to teach in the Kisarvik Program is: what is work?

"A lot of people do not understand what work really is. It means having to show up on time every day. So those are things we've tried to instill in them. What a work ethic is and what is demanded in the marine industry," said Cayen.

The two-week pre-training course takes place at consortium's school in Iqaluit Sept. 9 to 13 and again Sept.

16 to 20.

The Kisarvik Program takes place at the school from Sept. 23 to Dec. 13.

In the fall, the Nunavut Fisheries and Marine Training Consortium will offer two rounds of two-week pretraining courses, as well as another round of the Kisarvik Program.

Don't let cruise ship profits sail away Northern News Services

The mid-1840s brought Sir John Franklin and his crew of 128 men to the Northwest Passage. As we know, they didn't fare so well.

More than 170 years later, huge cruise ships, each carrying hundreds of passengers, are routinely sailing into the Northwest Passage during the late summer.

This year 13 Nunavut communities will be ports of call for the growing tourism sector.

It's an awfully short season, running only from late July into September, but a whole lot happens within that brief window. Country-food providers have samples of local meats on hand for guests to taste. Cultural performers demonstrate Inuit drumming, dancing and throat-singing. guides lead tours. Artists sell handmade wares.

The Department of Economic Development and Transportation is facilitating employment opportunities through its six-week Nalunaiqsijiit training program, helping to cultivate jobs for people to work onboard cruise ships as well as polar bear monitors, wildlife spotters, zodiac drivers, logistics planners and more.

In Gjoa Haven, the hamlet and Parks Canada organized the first Umiyaqtutt Festival three years ago and timed the week-long tribute to Inuit heritage and the Franklin expedition to coincide with the peak of cruise ship season.

These are all positives.

In some cases, there's more money to be made, however. Communities are entitled to charge service fees to cruise ships. These fees would help cover costs related to the use of local infrastructure, performances, guided tours and access to local sites of interest.

Pond Inlet has successfully imposed service fees. At $50 per passenger last year, the community reaped $250,000, which it has chosen to reinvest in the tourism industry and job creation. Pond Inlet's hamlet council has raised the service fee to $75 per passenger this year and that hike isn't keeping cruise liners

away in droves. Seventeen ships are scheduled to dock outside the north Baffin community over the next couple of months, by far the most of any Nunavut community.

The GN will be conducting surveys this summer to get a better understanding of cruise ship passenger spending habits. The 2015 exit survey wasn't very encouraging.

It showed that the average cruise ship guest only left behind $692 in Nunavut. That's far less than all other categories of tourists, who spent in excess of $2,000 apiece.

Cruise ship operators insist that their guests tend to think of their vacations as "all inclusive." In other words, they don't want to shell out for a bunch of extras.

For that reason, every Nunavut community ought to follow Pond Inlet's lead. The service fees that hamlets charge should be considered part of the price of a ticket that cruise ship passengers purchase at the outset. It's guaranteed money for the communities.

In times when municipalities are often scrambling to find funds, this injection of tens or hundreds of thousands of dollars in cruise ship service fees would be a blessing.

Keeping dates in mind Northern News Services

Many, if not all, of us like to keep certain dates well versed so that we do not offend those significant to us personally. There are birthdays, anniversaries, reunions, holidays and so on. We make every effort to be on top of these special events.

As we ponder over events and situations, I like to think about and remember where I came from and some of my experiences as I was growing up. Some memories are pleasant while others are painful. I can remember being in the Sandy Hills in the East Arm of the MacKenzie River where I first attended grade school in a one-room classroom at Reindeer Station. This was a small camp where the reindeer herders gathered with their families and would go up into the Sandy Hills where the reindeer grazed. The school ranged from Grade one to Grade three or four and was guided by one teacher. I was tickled to hear Billy Emaghok one of my residential school buddies from Tuktoyaktuk refer to this and it brought back vivid memories of this time.

As I moved along through my school-age time, more dates were introduced for us to remember as part of historical studies. You may recall how it was said that in 1492 an explorer sailed from one side of the Earth to the other and found a different race of people already occupying this land. My biggest concern in these historical developments is how the gap gets wider and wider between the haves and have-nots. Those who have fallen between the cracks of services, or the lack of, are suffering mentally, emotionally and physically. There are housing units that were built at the early developments of our communities and are showing their age; we talk about food security as the diet has changed; the family dynamics are in jeopardy because of addictions and many other circumstances and situations that affect our health and well-being.

We are often told that things don't change or happen overnight but I like to entertain the thought that Nunavut will move forward as the IQ Principles are applied in all areas of our growth and further developments as we exercise our desire for self-governance and sustainability ... respecting others, relationships and caring for people; fostering good spirits by being open, welcoming and inclusive; serving and providing for family and/or community; decision making through consensus; development of skills through practice, effort and action; working together for a common cause; being innovative and resourceful and respect and care for the land, animals and the environment.

Alianait's 2019 festival a success Core funding key to organization's stability, say organizers

The 2019 Alianait Arts Festival, held June 28 to July 1 in Iqaluit, is a wrap and staff, tired but very happy, say it was a success.

"Sold-out shows. Full houses. The jams were packed, 400 people at a time, sometimes," said Alianait's executive director Victoria Perron.

In fact, volunteer co-ordinator Rachel Michael notes shows, once filled to seating capacity, still had lineups of people wanting to get in.

"Realizing that, whoa, everyone wants to be here. That's so incredible," she said.

But Perron says success can also be measured by the smiles of the crowd.

"And standing ovations," adds Michael.

"From what I've heard, people were very pleased with it. And they were excited in the weeks leading up to the festival. We had very positive feedback from the community over the selection committee's choice of musicians," said Perron.

The line-up for the festival this year saw 21 performers gather in Iqaluit.

"Of the 21 performers that were

scheduled, 20 of them were either from the North or were Indigenous," said Perron.

Perron is Alianait's second executive director since the organization launched in 2005. Last year saw the reigns passed on from long-time executive director Heather Daley to Perron, with the two working side by side.

"Her hard work and dedication to the festival set it up for success.

"She was also available for us as an encyclopedia, if you will. We called on her a couple of times (this year)," said Perron.

Michael notes the importance of the volunteer presence – roughly 80 signed up and 50-plus were able to make it.

"We're forever grateful for everyone's long hours and hard work," she said.

While the festival is a jam-packed several days every summer, with a number of activities for younger and older folks alike, Alianait is a yearlong creative project. Its roughly $1 million annual budget allows the organization to host a concert series in the capital, a mental health tour to communities and a variety of song-writing and technical workshops through-out the year.

Perron says Alianait is entering its third year of a core funding arrangement with the GN's Department of Economic Development and Transportation, which offers the organization stability.

Two year-long staff positions are funded, Perron's and festival coordinator Alannah Johnston's.

(At the time of this interview, Johnston was away at Norway's Riddu Riddu Festival, where Nunavut artists were being featured this year. International connections are something Alianait is increasingly cultivating.)

Michael's position is funded for a short time before, during and after the festival.

Perron says a third funded yearlong position would definitely help Alianait grow, especially in terms of community engagement, with other communities aside from Iqaluit. That's why she was so excited by the live-streaming this year.

"We had two volunteers actually come in donate their equipment and their time –Travis Burke and Mac Pavia – to do some live feeds to live streaming to Facebook, through YouTube," said Perron.

"I think it's really important, because Alianait is a community organization, above everything

Tons of fun in Resolute

Qausuittuq/Resolute Children in Resolute may not be ready to return to school but many of them are eagerly visiting school grounds.

New playground equipment was erected earlier this month.

"It looks fantastic. It's a long time coming. I'm so glad it's there because the last one was at least 25 years old and it was not up to standards," said Ameela Aqiatusuk, a member of Resolute's district education council, which requested the replacement equipment. "The children love it. I've seen at least 10 to 15 kids hanging around there in the past two days."

Illutsataarik Building Supplies, a registered Inuit firm, installed the slide and various climbing apparatuses, according to the Department of Education.

The playground set is known as "Mighty Mouse" and was manufactured by Blue Imp Ltd. The equipment was shipped during last year's sealift. The total cost of the goods, freight and installation was close to $200,000, a Department of Education official stated.

Qarmartalik School had 44 full-time and part-time students registered in 2018-19.

Time to splish-splash

Taloyoak The community's pool was expected to open on Friday and it should remain accessible until late August or midSeptember, depending on weather, said recreation co-ordinator Nathan Mannilaq.

Taloyoak has the good fortune of having a local certified lifeguard in Simon Oleekatalik.

Other than the pool, the arena, which has a concrete floor, is open in the evening for sports such as floor hockey, roller blading, soccer and baseball.

Between 7 p.m. to 9 p.m., there can be a large crowd of youth who show up, according to Mannilaq, who took over the recreation job in mid-May. "Usually there's about 20 kids playing and maybe 50 kids hanging out," he said.

From 9 p.m. to 11 p.m. it's the adults' turn to get their exercise, either at the arena or the baseball diamond.

The hamlet also holds summer day camps for youth.

New program supports youth-led community projects

Nunavut Northern Youth Abroad (NYA), the program begun in Nun-

avut in 1998 to "cultivate youth leadership, individual career goals, cross-cultural awareness and international citizenship amongst youth aged 15 to 22" has launched a new program.

Northern Youth in Service seeks to support communitybased programs, which is a different focus than the not-forprofit's Canadian Program, International Program and NYA Next.

Nunavut News reached out to the organization.

"For Northern Youth in Service, we are funded by the Government of Canada under the Canada Services Corps, so we cannot officially release the project through the media until they have approved the communications," stated communications and program assistant Alissa Dotto.

Nevertheless, the program has an application deadline of Aug. 6 and the organization has reached out through social media and its alumni network to get the word out. The program has 10 applicants so far.

"It is a new program from NYA to help youth develop their leadership capacity, their job skills and will help them start a community-based project," according to the web page dedicated to the new program.

Inuit, First Nations and Metis youth between the ages of 15 and 25 and living in the one of the three territories, can apply.

The organization defines a community-based project as "any type of project in your community!"

"It can include starting programs, building something, starting a group. Whatever helps your community and develops your skills and leadership," states the NYA, adding a project doesn't have to be completely planned out, but youth should have an area of interest.

Participants will be selected in late August or early September and will then be paired with a mentor to work on developing, planning and starting the community-based project over a six-month period. Selection includes $500 in funding and help with applying for other funds in the future.

Youth can apply via the organization's website at nya.ca/ nyis.

Elders gathering coming together

Iglulik Approximately 100 elders have registered so far for the elders gathering to be held during the second week of August, said Greg Morash, Iglulik's senior administrative officer.

The hamlet was preparing for many more.

"We were hoping for 300, but 100 to 200 would be more comfortable," said Morash.

Local residents willing to rent space will be paid to help accommodate visitors, he added.

Inuit organization in Ottawa shut out of new federal funding says urban Inuit 'marginalized' and under-served

Ottawa Urban Inuit will remain "marginalized" and under-served due to a lack of new funding despite growing demand for training and employment programs, says a representative of an Ottawa-based Inuit organization.

Jason LeBlanc, executive director of Tungasuvvingat Inuit (TI), says none of the Government of Canada's new $161.2 million earmarked for additional Inuit-specific Indigenous Skills and Employment Training (ISET) programs will go directly to Tungasuvvingat Inuit.

Instead, the organization will have to rely on its existing $374,356 annual ISET base funding and any shared funding from other Inuit organizations.

"As the population continues to leave Inuit Nunangat and relocate into the Ottawa and Ontario region, it is very clear that our current base funding is completely inadequate to support the current population of Ontario Inuit," said LeBlanc.

"As data collection on the Inuit population in the south continues, we are talking upwards of 40 per cent of the total Inuit population in Canada that now reside in the south. The fact that no additional monies will be allocated to TI means we cannot serve the community in Ottawa and Ontario that requires this much-needed funding."

Tungasuvvingat Inuit's record of client interactions shows 128 clients in 2015, 108 in 2016, 121 in 2017, 159 in 2018 and 122 over the first seven months of 2019, which puts the organization on pace for a record high.

TI has delivered programs relating to construction, landscaping and technology mentoring programs, among others, over its 30-year history.

A few Inuit organizations in the North have committed a portion of their funding to assist Tungasuvvingat Inuit.

"We are thankful to Kakivak Association and Kitikmeot Inuit Association for committing funds that will support beneficiaries that have relocated to Ontario away from their home region," LeBlanc stated.

Nunavut News is awaiting a response from Employment and Social Development Canada on this funding issue.

WWF invests $250,000 in new projects Canadian conservation group courts local support to study beluga, narwhal, caribou and polar bears in Nunavut

World Wildlife Fund (WWF) Canada is prepared to ante up approximately $250,000 to fund new projects that will aim to benefit narwhal, beluga, caribou, polar bears and humans.

Research will entail a mixture of Inuit traditional knowledge and modern technology.

Cumberland Sound beluga, a threatened species, will be tracked using drones and satellites to gain a better understanding of their habitat and nursery areas.

Decades of historic narwhal data – including recent tagging studies in the High Arctic – will be analyzed to detect how climate change and increased shipping may be affecting narwhal summer and winter habitats.

The behaviour and migrations patterns of barren-ground caribou, whose population has declined dramatically, will be closely monitored and feces samples will be evaluated – all with an eye on how mining may be impacting the herds.

Cameras will be trained on Western Hudson Polar bears near Arviat to probe what might be driving the bears into communities and creating more conflict between the predators and humans.

In past years, more than $400,000

has been allocated for Northern projects through WWF Canada's Arctic Species Conservation Fund, which is reliant on public, corporate and foundation donations. That fund has supported in excess of 50 Northern projects since its inception in 2015, many of which have university partners.

Although WWF Canada is entering its fifth year of aiding projects through the Arctic fund, there aren't yet examples of how wildlife has been saved.

That's because the process is complex, according to Brandon Laforest, WWF Canada's senior specialist for Arctic species and ecosystems, who's based in Iqaluit.

"We recognize that it takes a long time, especially to do research right with communities, it takes a long time to build trust and come up with information," he said. "From the analysis perspective it often takes a long time to get enough sample size and longevity of data to say anything of consequence."

WWF Canada's Iqaluit office hosts five staff including former premier Paul Okalik, who's the organization's lead Arctic adviser.

Among the project partners for 2019 are the Kitikmeot Regional Wildlife Board and the Arviat Hunters and Trappers Organization. One of WWF Canada's priorities is to

have communities endorse or lead projects.

"You can't, in this day and age, do research that local people don't support," said Laforest. "We've really learned the value of finding partnerships and finding mutual goals and working together on those goals."

When the Taloyoak Hunters and Trappers Organization (HTO) set out to protect wildlife in the Boothia peninsula from mining and exploration activities a year ago, the HTO accepted technical expertise from WWF Canada.

"They've been very beneficial.

They've been more than a help," said Jimmy Oleekatalik, manager of the Taloyoak HTO. "They're good people."

Although WWF Canada sometimes has representatives attend hunters and trappers and regional wildlife board meetings to get a better grasp of the local perspective, there are occasions when the WWF and Indigenous people have differences of opinion about the health or populations of various species, Laforest acknowledged.

"I think we've really earned the ability to disagree sometimes and it's not the end of the world if you have a difference of opinion," he said. "What we really strive to do is always ensure that the best information is put forward for decision by the

Parties jockey for position news

Liberals and NDP have yet to announce candidates for the territory

Three months ahead of a federal election, the Conservative Party so far remains alone in having announced its Nunavut candidate.

Leader Andrew Scheer made that announcement in April – veteran politician Leona Aglukkaq returns to politics after being trounced by thenLiberal Hunter Tootoo in 2015. It was a decisive win for Tootoo over the three-time winner and cabinet minister, with 47.2 per cent of the territorial vote as compared to Aglukkaq's 24.8 per cent.

Jack Anawak, representing the NDP, placed second with 26.5 per cent.

Scandal then saw Tootoo resign from cabinet and the Liberal caucus.

When Scheer paid a surprise visit to Iqaluit in June accompanied by Aglukkaq, both played the facts and numbers game peculiar to pre-election periods. He and Aglukkaq took the opportunity to criticize the current Liberal government on housing and Nutrition North.

"We do know that in the last few years of this Liberal government it's been a token gesture in terms of addressing the (housing) issue. I think the amount of funding worked out to one house per territorial riding which is not going to, in any way, actually address the issue," said Scheer.

"The things that we're talking about, things that we're going to be looking to do, is to partner with the territorial government, look at ways that bring in more economic development and the ability for that to help address some of that issue."

The press did not have the opportunity to further question Scheer on his statement.

As Tootoo, now an independent MP, noted in a telephone call a few days after Scheer's visit, the Liberal government, while not doing

enough to address the territorial housing crisis, did continue to invest in Nunavut housing. In 2017, the feds announced $240 million over 10 years.

Nunavut currently sees roughly 90 housing units constructed annually.

"I think that just points to how well-informed Mr. Scheer is. I don't know if Leona was briefing him on that, or what," said Tootoo, who is considering running in the next federal election.

"But, I mean, it shows to me that he's really not up to speed and in tune with what the issues and challenges are in the North. They come up with their talking points that they use down south, but you know it just isn't reality in the North and they don't seem to get it."

Nunavut News offered both the Liberal Party of Canada and the New Democratic Party (NDP) the opportunity to respond to Scheer's statements.

"In this fall's important election, Canadians will have a clear choice. While Liberals are focused on investing in the middle class and making life better for families in Nunavut and all across Canada, Conservatives like Andrew Scheer, Doug Ford and Jason Kenney are focused on cutting vital services and returning to the failed policies of the Harper era," stated Parker Lund, spokesperson for the Liberal Party of Canada.

Lund also said an annual general meeting for the Nunavut Liberal association is expected to be called over the summer.

The NDP didn't respond to Scheer's statement, but communications and media officer for the NDP Guillaume Francoeur stated, "Several candidates have expressed their interest in the nomination. The approval process is following its course and a nomination meeting should be scheduled shortly."

"We've had no one advocating for

issues in the North," says Aglukkaq At the impromptu news conference with Scheer, Aglukkaq said that since 2015 when the Conservatives were in power, Nunavut hasn't seen any investments related to infrastructure.

"Our government at the time made investments, major investments, related to infrastructure. You can just look at the airport that we built, the deep seaport, the small craft harbour here, social housing investments ..." she said. "So we made significant investments as a government and since 2015 we have not seen any federal investments related to addressing the major infrastructure gaps that we do see here.

"So, it is going backwards, in my view. We've had no voice in Ottawa.

We've had no one advocating for issues in the North."

Aglukkaq and the ruling Conservatives made commitments to Nunavut ahead of the 2015 election call, all contingent on their re-election, including the deep seaport in Iqaluit.

That port is now under construction.

In March 2018, Minister of Infrastructure and Communities Amarjeet Sohi announced $566 million in infrastructure funding for Nunavut over 10 years in a bilateral deal with the territorial government.

At that announcement, Sohi also noted $300 million invested in 18 Nunavut projects over the previous two years, such as clean water supply initiatives in Pangnirtung and Iglulik, as well as Kimmirut's improved wastewater system that would prevent sewage from draining into the Arctic Ocean.

In Iqaluit, Nunavut Arctic College was expanded with a new building, the Baffin Correctional Centre is being expanded and renovated and Minister of Crown-Indigenous Relations Carolyn Bennett recently cut the ribbon at a new $8-million community daycare.

As for the Nutrition North Canada Program, the Liberals have so far failed to fix the Conservative-era program. Scheer said his party is ready to try again.

"I'm here to talk to Leona and some of the people in the community for ideas on how the government can strengthen (Nutrition North), whether it's auditing rules, whether it's a more robust regime to keep the accounting on where the money is flowing to and how it's actually impacting the people of the North," Scheer said.

Aglukkaq raised the ire of many Nunavummiut when she sat in the House of Commons reading a newspaper, even as the discussion centered around food insecurity in Nunavut.

Tootoo called for an inquiry into Nutrition North in the House of Commons in June.

"Since it launched in 2011, successive governments have spent over half a billion dollars on the Nutrition North Program. In that time the number of households in Nunavut affected by food insecurity has risen from 33 to over 50 per cent," said Tootoo in Ottawa, calling it the Phoenix Food Program, a comparison to the flawed federal pay system.

"If you look at the issues that Mr. Scheer raised, these aren't problems that just popped up in the last four years. These are problems that have been around since before Nunavut was created. Like housing, infrastructure funding – successive governments have all failed to deliver on the promise of the new territory," Tootoo told Nunavut News.

The federal election is scheduled to take place on or before October 21.

Melodic voices, drums, guitars and dancing will make for a lively three days in Cambridge Bay on the August long weekend.

The Ovayok Broadcasting Society is organizing the inaugural Mosquito Music Festival to keep people entertained Aug. 2 to 4.

"There's a southern Nunavut music festival – in Arviat they have something (the Inuumariit Music Festival) – but outside of that for the northern part of Nunavut there hasn't been anything," said Wayne Gregory, president of the broadcasting society.

"For the end of summer, we've normally been fairly quiet. To liven up and bring entertainment to Nunavut we said we'll see what we can do."

Planning by eight Ovayok society members began about three months ago.

The timeline is too compressed to accomplish all that the volunteers hoped to include this year.

"We're going through our trials and tribulations as we speak," Gregory said with a laugh.

However, they're already starting to arrange some details for the 2020 edition of the Mosquito Music Festival to make it bigger and better, said Gregory.

Throat-singer Donna Lyall will be among the numerous Nunavut cultural performers to take the stage in a couple of weeks.

"If they want or need help with anything else, I'm there to help but mostly will be there for the fun," said Lyall.

Other booked acts include Yellowknife's Welders Daughter, children's entertainers The Blues Berries, the gospel trio comprising Shawn, Lynette and Kaison Holmes and local square dancers. Outdoor games, a barbecue and a beer garden are also on the schedule.

Cambridge Bay's Jerry Puglik, a longtime drum dancer and instructor, said he may get involved in the festival, if his schedule permits.

"I look forward to it. It brings young and old musicians (together) from across Nunavut," said Puglik. "There's a lot of talented musicians (locally), we just don't often see them all the time."

The performances will take place outside

so long as the weather co-operates. As a contingency, the broadcasting society has booked the community hall and both schools in case the entertainment has to move indoors.

The name of the festival was inspired by a documentary that Gregory happened to watch the night before an organizing meeting.

That TV show revealed that the highest concentration of mosquitoes in the world is found in the Amazon and the Arctic comes in second place in terms of the flying parasites.

"I was like, what? So, I went and did a little research on it and I found it was true. I was shocked," said Gregory.

The hard-to-avoid blood-sucking pests thereby will gain a little more notoriety in August.

Lyall could do without them.

"I've performed outdoors many times – should be interesting. But (I'm) not looking forward to the mosquitoes," she confessed.

Members of the broadcasting society have worked out a discount for airfare for those flying in for the festival and a discount for accommodations was being negotiated as well, said Gregory.

Wrestling team set for Saskatchewan Baker's dozen of grapplers prepare to represent Nunavut at Western Canada Summer Games

Wrestling is a sport which always finds Nunavut in good stead when it comes to roster size.

It's no different this time around and the territory will be the largest contingent among the North when the Western Canada Summer Games begin in Swift Current, Sask., next month.

A total of 13 wrestlers will hit the mats looking to score a medal or a good performance of some sort and the man in charge of trying to help make that happen is Chris Crooks of Cambridge Bay, the team's head coach.

"This is one of the bigger teams we've sent to a competition," said Crooks. "We know we'll be bigger than the NWT and Yukon."

Selecting the team was as easy as offering all of the champions of the various weight classes from this past January's Nunavut Wrestling Championships first crack at punching their ticket to Swift Current.

To Crooks' surprise, they all accepted.

"We put out the offers to them and they all said they wanted to go," he said. "There was room for one of our second-place finish-

ers to make the trip and he's going as well."

A good chunk of the team – 10 of the 13 – got together in Cambridge Bay for a training camp last month.

Crooks said the Pangnirtung wrestlers weren't able to make it because of weather.

Two other members of the team – Eekeeluak Avalak and Kristen McCallum, both from Cambridge Bay – left for Jasper, Alta., on July 19 and are spending a week at the Rocky Mountain Wrestling Camp. The final week of training will happen in Edmonton beginning on Aug. 8 with the entire team having a five-day workout before jetting off to Swift Current on Aug. 13.

The wrestling competition at the Games will be a bit younger than what they're used to and there won't be the same sort of calibre as one would normally see at a national championship or Canada Summer Games.

Crooks said a lot of wrestlers who would have been age eligible – U16 is the age limit for wrestling – won't be in Swift Current.

"Some of the top athletes who went to the Pan-American Championships or to Romania (for a training camp) turned down their spots," he said. "Some will be there but not as many as there could have been."

One last good ride Iqaluit The Nunavut Stars Hockey Camp is coming up in Iqaluit and it all begins on July 28 at the Arnaitok Arena. And it will be the last time.

Jesse Mike, the camp's co-ordinator, said on July 18 that the 2019 edition will be the final time the camp is held under her watch.

"We want to make sure we give it one last good run,"

The camp will feature players between the ages of five and 18 getting plenty of on-ice and off-ice training over the course of the five days of instruction.

Mike said there will be a mixture of Northern and southern coaches looking after all of the activities.

The 2019 camp is the first one being held since 2016.

Pitter, patter, let's get at 'er Iqaluit There's another big running event planned for Iqaluit and it's happening next month.

It's the Pitter Patter Fun Run and it all takes place on Aug. 10 with the starting line outside of the Arctic Winter Games Arena. There will be several distances for runners to take on from a 5-km run right on up to the half-marathon, which measures 21-km. There's also a 1-km family walking event.

Before that happens, there's a running group that's been started up to help get people ready for the big day. They plan to be out three days a week: Tuesdays and Thursdays beginning at 5:30 each night and Saturdays starting at 10 a.m.

The practice sessions are open to anyone and they happen rain or shine.

It's softball tournament time Kangiqliniq/Rankin Inlet Tournament softball will be coming to Rankin Inlet later this month and it's for the younger crowd.

The hamlet is hosting a slopitch tournament from July 26 to 28 with teams from Rankin Inlet, Baker Lake, Arviat, Coral Harbour and Whale Cove expected to hit the field, said David Clark, the hamlet's recreation co-ordinator.

Rankin Inlet hosted a series of tryouts on July 18, 19 and 21 to select the players for the two teams it plans to enter into the tournament.

Lisa Kresky couldn't have asked for anything more to end her 15-year run as found-

coach announced at the end of the past school term that she would not be returning to Maani Ulujuk Ilinniarvik in Rankin Inlet for the coming semester.

Kresky started teaching in Rankin Inlet in 2003

and founded the Aqsarniit Ujauttaq gymnastics club in February of 2004.

A total of 65 countries were represented at the World Gymnaestrada, with more than 18,000 participants taking part in the event.

Representing Rankin's Aqsarniit Ujauttaq club were Yzabell MacDonald, Abigail MacDonald, Kortni McKay, Allison McKay, Maya Hidalgo, Latasha Nirlungayuk, Aeyeshan Joy Libatique, Reagan Tattuinee, Bailey Green, Josie Panika, Kylie Mae Aksalnik, Caroline Gibbons, Nefretiri Innukshuk, Rachel Tutanuak, Audrey Fredlund, Lexus Dion, Vestal Netser and Kyrene Angootealuk.

When reached by Nunavut News in Dornbirn, Austria, last week, Kresky said her young athletes absolutely loved performing at the event.

She said the girls also enjoyed all the sightseeing they were able to do during their trip.

"Other than all the boys, who our girls thought were oh-so cute, when we asked the girls to name their favourite part of the trip a lot of them said performing," said Kresky with a slight giggle.

"They were performing in front of crowds of thousands of people and they were loving every minute of it."

Kresky said her young gymnasts held-up well to the time constraints of a hectic schedule.

She said the first two days were a little tough due to the time change and lack of sleep, but, once past that, the girls just kept getting more and more excited each day.

"They just love meeting people from so many different countries around the world," she said.

"The event is all about gymnastics for all and, this year, it featured all ages, all levels of performance and all cultural backgrounds.

"It's actually tough to come-up with the words to describe just how amazing this event – which is about competition – really is.

"The fact it's all about performance adds a whole new level of camaraderie and friendship between everyone here and I think that's really special."

Kresky said it was really hard to fathom the scope of the event with so many participants from so many countries.

She said until you're there and actually see it, there's no way anyone can "get it" through just words.

"We performed in a routine on July 11 with almost 2,000 other gymnasts from around the world.

"Where else would you get the opportunity to do something like that? To see all these people come together from around the world to do a routine – it's pretty amazing.

"Our dream as a club was to go to the events in Las Vegas, Vancouver, B.C. and the world's in Dornbrin and, look at us, we made all three.

"This has all been for the girls, but it's also been a wonderful way for me to finish my time with them in Rankin Inlet, especially with spending five days in Paris, France, on our way home to Rankin Inlet on July 20."
