Ike Haulli – a sex offender recently ordered to pay $1.2 million to four victims – received the Queen Elizabeth II Diamond Jubilee Medal in 2013. The Qulliit Nunavut Status of Women Council wants the medal taken away.

NEWS Briefs Iqaluit Qulliit Nunavut Status of Women Council is calling for sexual offender Ike Haulli's Queen Elizabeth II Diamond Jubilee Medal to be revoked.

"Qulliit's council members are expressing outrage at the conduct of Ike Haulli of Igloolik. Haulli's violent, predatory and calculated behaviour was heinous," stated a May 24 news release from the women's council.

"By referring to his crimes as mistakes, he attempted to minimize his acts of traumatizing violence."

Qulliit is encouraging members of the public to support its stance by writing letters to Rideau Hall in Ottawa asking for the medal to be rescinded.

Haulli, owner of Savik Enterprises in Iglulik and a former president of the Baffin Regional Chamber of Commerce, received the distinction in 2013. The medals were given to 60,000 Canadians for their contributions and achievements.

As a result of a civil suit earlier this year, Haulli was ordered to pay $1.2 million to four victims of his sexual assaults, carried out between 1968 and 1986, when the victims were between four and 15 years old.

"We applaud all the women and girls who have so courageously come forward, who have been victimized by these

violent acts," Qulliit's statement reads. "We stand with you against these crimes and this injustice. We offer you support through information and organizations wanting to assist you."

Chidliak's projected diamond production up 44 per cent

Qikiqtaaluk Vancouver-based Peregrine Diamonds Ltd. announced positive results from an updated independent preliminary economic assessment for the Chidliak Phase One Diamond Development May 23.

The diamond project is located 120 kilometres northeast of Iqaluit.

"The updated (assessment) highlights that (Phase One) represents a robust, high margin, open-pit mining project with very attractive economics," stated a news release.

The new assessment incorporates the 2018 expanded diamond resource at the CH-6 and CH-7 kimberlite pipes, which increases Phase One life-of-mine diamond production by 44 per cent to 16.7 million carats.

The updated assessment notes a mine life of approximately 13 years, producing from an open pit at the CH-6 kimberlite pipe for nine years, followed by production via an open pit at the CH-7 kimberlite, according to the release.

The Qajuqturvik Food Centre is no longer on the brink of disaster thanks to the work of the outgoing board of directors, two dozen residents attending the organization's annual general meeting heard May 22.

"I would like to highlight the fact that in September of last year we were at one of our lowest points financially and in terms of capacity," said outgoing president Wade Thorhaug.

"I was actually calling suppliers and asking them not to cash cheques for the time being, until I could get money in the bank.

Since then we've had a lot of fundraising success and we're in a much better position."

Qajuqturvik ended its fiscal year with a sizable surplus of $333,197.63 – but Thorhaug explained that was due to the late infusion of funds earlier this year and discussions were taking place to ensure those funds could be kept and used over time.

Aside from the fundraising efforts – money came from a long list of funders and donors – Qajuqturvik gained financial support from Indigenous Services Canada and the Community Food Centres of Canada (CFCC).

Qajuqturvik now has four full-time staff members, as opposed to the previous team of one full-time and a few part-time. Staff includes a chef, a sous-chef and an executive director funded by the federal government's Urban Programming for Indigenous Peoples, and a CFCC-funded development manager.

Additionally, Qajuqturvik has gained partner-in-development designation with CFCC. In 2016 it received the designation of a Good Food Organization. CFCC began as a food bank in Toronto and grew its model into a national network. Its vision is to "build health, belonging, and social justice in lowincome communities through the power of food."

The Qajuqturvik Food Centre is most known for its daily meal service. would be forthcoming, Thorhaug said.

"I look forward to seeing how this model will be adapted to our community," he stated in the annual report he presented to the board.

"In terms of food, Nunavut is a world apart from the rest of the country. Our challenges are to both increase the capacity to navigate the country's most expensive commercial food market while also facilitating access to the enormous bounty of food available on the land. One day, we hope to reach a point where all Iqalummiut can feel confident in their ability to eat affordably and healthily, regardless of their socioeconomic status."

But for now, Qajuqturvik is most known for its daily meal service. Diners can take an extra meal for themselves or others who need one. In the 2017-2018 fiscal year, the food centre saw its highest number of daily servings last May at 191, with its lowest in December at 124 – the average is 168 per day, with an average of 77 people served per day.

Makinnasuaqtiit Society, with its one-onone training program, stopped operating last August due to a lack of funding. Qajuqturvik took it over as a non-profit catering enterprise, "in an effort to subsidize our operations as well as provide for more regular staffing in the kitchen."

Thorhaug, Amelia Rajala, Tony Canny, Matt Clark and Leevee Naglingniq form the new board. While the organization is looking good, Thorhaug emphasized that Qajuqturvik will continue to need volunteers.

"We hope to position ourselves as an increasingly influential player among the network of organizations and departments working to improve the lives of Iqalummiut.

And despite everything we are still a volunteer organization," he said in his president's statement.

"Our ambitions will require more help than ever before. With a professional backbone we hope to make the volunteer experience more satisfying, by drawing on everyone's unique talents and knowledge."

GN, RCMP respond to Pang's plea Quality of Life cabinet committee to meet, discuss communities call for aid

The Government of Nunavut and RCMP sent nine representatives to attend a special Hamlet of Pangnirtung council meeting May 22 after the community's appeal for help to three GN departments earlier this month.

The hamlet's plea came after a rash of suicide attempts and an upsurge of violent incidents in the community.

"They've agreed to have a working group with the hamlet and a few of the (GN/RCMP) people locally to look at trying to address some of the issues that we brought forth," said Pangnirtung's senior administrative officer Ron Ladd.

The meeting was very productive, director of communications for the GN's Department of Executive and Intergovernmental Affairs Catriona Macleod stated in an e-mail.

However, Macleod noted the Cabinet Committee on Quality of Life – which consists of the premier and ministers of Health, Housing, Education and Family Services – "is planning to meet soon to discuss this situation as well as territory-wide priorities to ensure the needs of all Nunavummiut are addressed."

Sealift battle brews in Kitikmeot NEAS and NSSI executives say Government of the Northwest Territories shouldn't compete with private business

The Government of the Northwest Territories is overstepping its bounds by competing against private business in the Kitikmeot region, say corporate leaders of two sealift companies.

Suzanne Paquin, president and CEO of Nunavut Eastern Arctic Shipping (NEAS) and Daniel Desgagnes, managing director of Nunavut Sealink and Supply Inc. (NSSI), are strongly opposed to the practice, which they call unfair.

The GNWT stepped in last year to assume marine resupply in the Northwest Territories after Northern Transportation Company Ltd. (NTCL) became insolvent in 2016. The territorial government purchased NTCL's assets for $7.5 million in December 2016 and later handed over the reins to its Marine Transportation Services (MTS) division. The GNWT also, through a competitive bid process, hired St. John's-based Orsi Offshore Recruitment Service to secure ship captains, crews and shipyard personnel.

The GNWT extended its service into the Kitikmeot last year, as NTCL used to do, and it plans to follow the same practices again this year.

"Now we feel like we're competing against the government," NEAS's Paquin said. "Certainly when (the GNWT is) going out and competing against private industry, when there is a competitive market out there, I feel that it is completely inappropriate. Their cost structure is completely different than ours. They are in a position of advantage, which is not acceptable."

NSSI's Desgagnes said he understands the GNWT ensuring its own communities are serviced but he wants the NWT territorial government to stop operating in the Kitikmeot, where the Kitikmeot Corporation is a shareholder in NSSI. Desgagnes added that he sent a letter to the GNWT a couple of weeks ago to express his objections but he hadn't received a response as of May 24.

Marine Transportation Services, under the auspices of the Government of the Northwest Territories, delivered 37 million litres of fuel and more than 10,000 tonnes of cargo to NWT communities and commercial clients in 2017. NEAS is majority owned by the Makivik Corporation, which operates on behalf of the Inuit of northern Quebec. The remainder of the company belongs to Transport Nanuk Inc., made up of The North West Company and Logistec Corporation. NEAS, which lists seven ships in its fleet, hauls cargo and delivers fuel from a port in Valleyfield, Que.

NSSI is a joint venture of Quebec-based Desgagnes Transarctik Inc. and Arctic Cooperatives Ltd. The Nunavut Inuit-owned Qikiqtaaluk Corporation and Sakku Investments Corporation are also shareholders.

NSSI's seven ships operate out of Sainte Catherine, Que., and Churchill, Man. NSSI reported shipping between 580 billion to 680 billion cubic metres of cargo to and from its Northern destinations annually between 2014-2016.

Sealift season generally runs from late June through late October.

With delays in getting mould removed from the community arena, along with other needed upgrades, hamlet council in Cambridge Bay is preparing to embark on a fundraising campaign for a new recreation complex.

Getting a new facility will take several years and will likely cost $20 to 30 million, senior administrative officer Marla Limousin estimated. It won't negate the need to have the existing arena repaired, but council has decided to start the quest for financing for a new rec complex sooner than later, said Limousin.

The existing arena didn't open to the public at all this past winter due to the spreading mould. Federal funding of $4.2 million was announced in February 2016 to address the mould, install a new concrete surface with a thermosiphon system to extend the ice season.

The building also needs a new fire-suppressant system.

Efforts to get the mould removal done late last year and earlier this year were scuttled as the Department of Community and Government Services (CGS) and the hamlet tried to hammer out details of how to retain a contractor and which party would be responsible for overseeing various aspects of the work,

Limousin explained.

A hamlet council meeting held May 23 resulted in municipal leaders deciding to leave the project entirely in the hands of the GN, she said.

"We don't have the resources or the expertise to deal with it," said Limousin, who added that having the arena closed for another winter is not an option.

"We cannot lose it again. And that was portrayed by council last night, very heartfelt.

It was really bad for families and kids this year without having a hockey program or a skating program... It is a place where no community wants to find themselves."

CGS didn't respond to a request for comment on Thursday.

Jeannie Ehaloak, Cambridge Bay's MLA and former mayor, didn't reply to emailed questions and couldn't be reached for an interview.

A new recreation complex has been at or near the top of the capital projects list in Cambridge Bay for close to 15 years now, Limousin said. A new complex may also include a larger community hall, one that can exceed the 200-person capacity limitation in place at the existing hall.

"We're getting a lot more trade shows and bigger types of meetings than we can handle at our community hall," she said.

Federal funding a shiny distraction Northern News Services

This month saw the federal government make two investments in transportation infrastructure in Nunavut.

The first saw $40 million for new airport terminals in five communities, a runway project in Clyde River, and a new hangar for First Air in Iqaluit; the second saw $2.5 million to repave the road from the Iqaluit airport into the city.

For those who have not passed through Kimmirut, Naujaat, Whale Cove or Chesterfield Inlet, the current terminals are similar in size and function to portable school classrooms; Kugluktuk's is slightly bigger.

Each of these terminals is at the end of its life.

At some of these terminals, travellers are welcomed by walk-in freezer doors, which keep the cold out.

Whale Cove's tiny waiting area is wallpapered with jigsaw puzzles (one of the terminal's most interesting features). The spaces are uniquely Northern but the communities have all outgrown the tiny spaces, and will continue to do so.

The airport terminal funding was the only one of six applications made by the Nunavut government approved by the feds under the National Trade Corridors Fund. The announcement

comes as Nunavut recovers from the stinging rejection of ambitious but interesting projects that included the Grays Bay road and port project in the Kitikmeot, a road from the Kivalliq to Manitoba, new airports for Pangnirtung and Kimmirut, and marine development in Qikiqtarjuaq.

The feds suggest First Air has a fleet rejig in the works that will make replacing the airports in Pangnirtung and Kimmirut irrelevant. And the road to Manitoba is a nation-building exercise with a weak business case.

Grays Bay promised $5 billion in gross domestic product growth for the territory but came at a price tag of $527 million.

Each of these must take a backseat to the relatively small investments required to update local infrastructure for the immediate good of each hamlet's residents.

Priority one: feed the North.

The feds are betting that investing in improved terminals in communities and improved cargo infrastruc-

ture in Iqaluit will ensure the timely delivery of food and hopefully bring down food prices. The Iqaluit port project was also backed for this reason.

These investments take some of the pressure off the bureaucrats working to improve the Nutrition North Canada program.

The investments mean goods will get where they're going faster, making them less likely to spoil, and saving money for retailers.

The eternal question is: will Nunavummiut benefit from those savings?

Because in the end, this does nothing to fix the general distrust of retailers endemic to Nunavut, caused by the fundamental flaw with the latest version of Nutrition North – the lack of oversight into whether retailers pass on savings.

The feds need to fix this problem in the next iteration of the program.

In the meantime, a handful of communities will be distracted by the shiny new infrastructure until the next election.

Nunavummiut can't let that be the end of this discussion. The feds are backing projects that help us save a little money but we prefer projects that help Nunavummiut earn much more.

Projection as a way out Oftentimes we look for an easy way out of a situation we do not want to be involved in. On the other hand, we throw something at someone else as our way out and this is called 'projection'. Let me see if I can walk us through this.

Most of our daily activities are of a positive nature. We go to the store and pick up necessities, we run to the gas pump for our ski-dooes, trucks and quads, we pick up our mail, and in between there are engagements during these brief outings.

We meet and greet and share events or experiences with others and then we carry on.

During some of these engagements, something is said and a trigger goes off, and it upsets us quickly. We try to look strong and in control, but – human nature being what it is – we want to say something or do something in retaliation.

Many of us have learned to bite our tongue and

try not to add any more fuel to the fire, but...

To cover up our frailty and lack of selfcontrol, we say something about that particular individual as if it's their fault that things are so wrong and bad. We throw or project a negative thought or word on them knowing full well that what we are saying is not true. This relieves us of our weaknesses and makes us think that we have shown how strong we are while making this individual, though unaware, our scapegoat.

Ever been there?

In the dynamics of the home environment, the 'little ones' are prime targets for this kind of behaviour. These precious gifts are yelled at, shunned and ignored and as they grow up through the various stages of development, they withdraw or become aggressive.

This reminds me of a saying I expressed

It's fishing derby season across Nunavut and lines are dropping into the icy waters in numerous communities.

In Cambridge Bay, Evelyn Kitigon and Rosabelle Klengenberg took it upon themselves to organize a contest to honour the memory of local fisher Ambrose Aknavigak and resulted in the catches being donated to

the community's food bank.

The contest was only going to run for a couple of days last week, but the closing date kept getting extended due to prize donations continuing to pour in, Kitigon said.

"It's at any lake you want, or even at the ocean – any cod, any lake trout, any Arctic char," she said, adding that the heaviest fish and smallest fish would earn prizes.

In Iglulik, close to 50 people turned out for the May 23 fishing derby, organized by

the hamlet's recreation department. A total of $2,000 in prizes was up for grabs. First place, worth $300, in the cod fish category went to Louis Immaroitok while Lisa Qamukaq took the $200 second prize.

Nicholas Akittirq prevailed in the sculpin division and Lisa Qamukaq was again second.

In the iqalulikuluk (little lake fish) category, Naisana Qamaniq came out on top with Martha N. Qattalik capturing second

place.

Naisana Qamaniq also took the "most fish" category, which came with a $500 payout.

In Hall Beach, it was Naomie Allianaq who hauled in the $3,000 top prize by landing an 86.8 centimetre trout on May 22.

Second place went to Ruthie Irqittuq (85.9 cm). Abraham Olaalaa (85.7 cm) took third, Mary Kuppaq (84.5 cm) finished fourth and Jason Ikeperiar wound up fifth (82.1 cm).

Sanikiluaq passes 100grad mark

Sanikiluaq The community of Sanikiluaq, population 882 in 2016, can now boast breaking the 100-graduates marker with Paatsaali School's Class of 2018.

"We're pret t y excited," said principal Tim Hoyt.

The nine new high school grads, who join the previous 98 and are poised to receive their diplomas, are: Sappa Cookie, Jaani Audla, Moses Audla, Quentin Sala, Paul Amagoalik, Joe Iqaluk, Rebecca Qavvik, Alissa Amagoalik and Jane Kudluarok.

"We've had a lot of success since our new school opened (in 2011). We used to be a K-12 school," said Hoyt, who became principal in 2009.

"We used to follow a year-long schedule. Kids would register in September and take the same class all year for 45 minutes.

I changed that to a semestered system, so instead of taking a class for 45 minutes you would take a class for an hour and a half."

Hoyt says the graduation rates in the community have more than doubled since the semestered system was implemented.

Finally, both the elementary and high school have a low teacher-turnover rate and both schools are well on their way to being staffed by Inuktitut speakers and being entirely bilingual. All but two are local Inuktitut-speakers at the elementary school, while at the high school seven are from the south and four are local Inuktitut-speakers.

"We'll improve that dramatically once the local NTEP (Nunavut Teacher Education Program) students graduate this year," he said. "It makes our job a lot easier."

Hoyt also noted the school is well on its way to offering a bilingual education, as per the Education Act. "We'll get there," he said.

Junior Rangers going strong

Iglulik The Junior Rangers program in Iglulik had an official swearing-in ceremony on May 12 as dignitaries from headquarters in Yellowknife flew in to attend.

The local program got off the ground in November and 43 youth between the ages of 12 and 18 are registered, said instructor Lucy Qattalik, an experienced member of the Canadian Rangers.

Wearing their green Junior Rangers sweaters, the youth meet every Tuesday evening at the school for drills, healthy lifestyle counselling and to learn traditional on-the-land skills, Qattalik said.

The Iglulik Junior Rangers program is the 20th held in Nunavut, according to Capt.

Welcoming spring with a carnival

Gjoa Haven Residents in Gjoa Haven celebrated spring with the Qavaavik Games, May 22-25. Among the events were men's and women's dog team races, iglu building, races in homemade sleds that rest on only one ski and snowmobile relay races.

"It's been great so far – a lot of people going down to play and participate," said Gibson Porter, the hamlet's acting recreation coordinator, on May 24.

Great weather enabled the outdoor events to go ahead as planned.

"The weather's been nice to us this year.

We didn't have to go to the high school gym to play our games there," Porter said.

Fishing and sealing derbies will take place in the coming weeks, he added.

Qulliq-making workshop

Ikaluktutiak/Cambridge Bay Close to 70 people participated in a oneday qulliq-making workshop led by local elders at the May Hakongak Library on May 16. The traditional lamps were made using modern materials – scrap metal, cardboard and duct tape.

Staff from the Canadian High Arctic Research Station organized the event, which was coordinated in conjunction with Science Odyssey 2018, 10 days of celebrating science, engineering, mathematics and technology across Canada.

Local youth names RCMP dog

Iqaluit An Iqaluit youth is among the winners of the RCMP Police Dog Service Training Centre's (PDSTC) 2018 Name the Puppy contest.

Iqaluit student Jackson McQuade Thomson offered the name Loki, and won along with 12 other youth from across Canada.

"Thank you to all the children who sent in their suggestions," stated Staff Sgt. Gary Creed, acting officer-in-charge of the training centre.

"We couldn't be more proud of our pups and these new names will serve them well."

The RCMP received nearly 15,000 entries, with all names starting with the letter "L." "RCMP police service dog teams are an important part of front-line policing. They search for missing or lost people, track and apprehend criminals, remove illicit drugs from the streets, detect explosives and search for evidence used in crimes," stated the release.

Entrepreneurs over 50 to be celebrated

Canada Entrepreneurs over the age of 50 are being sought from all over Canada for the Wise 50 over 50 Awards.

The nomination process is now open, and the deadline is June 30.

The awards were launched in 2017 to promote older entrepreneurs.

"Entrepreneurs have made huge impacts throughout the history of Canada. VSS an annual powerhouse at the Kivalliq Regional Science Fair, sending numerous students all the way to the Canada-Wide Science Fair.

In most schools, a student's success in graduating from Grade 12 is a total team effort from the collective of teachers that guide them down their path and VSS is no exception.

However, it must be noted, coincidence or not, the number of VSS graduates has increased by about 200 per cent since Brocklebank and Leishman's arrival in Chester.

Curiously, an argument can be made that Brocklebank's success rate and teaching methods have received more attention and applause nationally and internationally than right here in Nunavut.

With my apologies to the good folks at Kivalliq School Operations in Baker Lake, it kind of makes one wonder exactly what kind of qualifications one needs to have to maybe, just maybe, be given a bit more of a voice in curriculum delivery and development.

I sincerely hope I have not embarrassed Mr. Brocklebank with my 'gushing' over his teaching accomplishments in Chester, but I am a firm believer in when you have a keeper, let everyone know and the team of Brocklebank and Leishman are keepers in Chester.

Hopefully, we'll see similar success stories start to rear their heads in other communities across our region; success stories that have the roots of their success firmly planted in education.

Amautiit workshop wraps in Pang Community moms make their own

Nine Pangnirtung mothers got to work sewing amautiit as 2018 began, and last month they put in their final stitches.

The project was driven by the community's Canada Prenatal Nutrition Program coordinator Courtney Cox and her assistant Nina Tassugat. Normally, Cox and Tassugat organize evenings and special events for mothers.

"We do cooking, we did a Mother's Day brunch. I get nurses to come in and health workers to talk about topics we're supposed to cover," said Cox. Up to nine mothers attend the program,

which runs three times a week, to discuss vaccinations, vitamins – such as vitamin D and iron – sexual health and breast feeding.

But Cox and Tassugut thought an amautimaking workshop would be a great idea.

"There was one in the past, a few years ago, so we wanted to do it again," said Cox, adding she wasn't sure the funding would support the cost.

"We have to break the funding down and we only have so much for extra, and that would be an extra."

To deal with that, Cox and Tassugat took advantage of a big sale at the local Co-op.

"We went shopping when there were Christmas sales and Co-op had 50 per cent off all

In January, Cox said there were more than 30 interested, but they could only accommodate 10.

"We took the people who always participate – that was five of them. Then we had a draw for the other five spots," she said, adding one mom is away to give birth and a spot is being held for her.

To qualify for a spot, the women had to be either pregnant, breastfeeding with babies less than two years of age, or bottle-feeding with babies less than 12 months.

Elder Hannah Akulukjuk, with some help from Jeannie Alivaktuk, taught the women for three hours twice a week in the evening, with a

third evening added toward the end.

"Some ladies finished way ahead of others.

But, those ladies also had no little babies," Cox said.

The evenings were quiet and focused, but became more fun as the amautiit were nearing completion.

And Cox says when some of the women were away or their kids were sick, they missed the sewing. "'I can't wait to go back to sewing,' they said.

'I miss sewing.' 'Can I come pick it up so I can do it at home.' They were really eager to do it," Cox said.

"And we always made supper, me and my assistant. Or side dishes or dessert."

Iqaluit skate park closes The City of Iqaluit decides indoor skate park will not open this summer

Iqaluit skateboarders will have to head outside this summer after the city decided not to open its indoor skate park this year after previous seasons saw a decline in attendance.

Usage has been on a sharp decline over the past few years, resulting in an average of four kids attending the park's drop-in sessions – a sharp contrast for the indoor facility that was well attended when it first opened over a decade ago.

"When the skate park first opened it was very popular and a great program" said Amy Elgersma, interim chief administrative officer and former director of recreation with the City of Iqaluit. "But in the last few years attendance dwindled so we had to evaluate."

When the skate park first opened it was located inside the Arctic Winter Games complex, but shortly after moved to the community curling rink in order to increase participation.

With numbers appearing to decline the city decided other programs may be a better fit for the space.

Elgersma said the city's department of recreation is continually evaluating its programs to make sure what they are providing is most beneficial for the community.

"It is important that we offer activities for the entire community," she said. "Being that it is a prime space, it's important that we're using it to its maximum benefit."

According to the city, the drop-in numbers they cited were buoyed by their own paid staff attending the sessions and that skate camp numbers had also declined.

The city is now looking at introducing new programming to fill the space vacated by the park. A KidFit program will begin next week and the city says it's looking to start a ball hockey league, as well as exploring a number of other activities that can use mobile equipment.

Still the best fit for some Despite the city having other plans in place, some members of the community feel the skate park is still the best fit for the community.

An online petition to keep the skate park open had garnered 335 signatures as of last Friday and was presented to city council last week. The city says it is now reviewing the information within that petition and council has asked that the skate park program be brought before the recreation committee for another look.

"Regarding the petition, the information is going to be reviewed," said Andrea Spitzer, a spokesperson for the city.

While the skate park program is being examined, the city says it will move forward with the new programs that will be filling the space. However, the city has not closed all doors on reopening a skate park in the future, stating if the community shows a desire for a skate park, whether indoor or outdoor, one could still be opened in the future.

"We really do understand that there are people passionate about their sports and skateboarding in particular.

We do appreciate the feedback and all the feedback we received," said Elgersma.

"We're not saying we won't ever bring the skate park back in the community if that's what the community wants."

Registrations for teams is ongoing but the deadline to register is June 1 at 5 p.m. Following the deadline, there will be a captains' meeting to go over the schedule and other matters

Turf for teens

Iqaluit The turf is in at the Arctic Winter Games Arena in Iqaluit and there's one more thing that youth in the capital will get to do while it's there.

Teen Drop-In is off and running and is happening every Tuesday and Friday from 4:30 to 5:30 p.m.

You must be at least 13 years of age to take part and there will be some sports equipment to use, such as soccer balls, footballs and Frisbees and everyone must have clean indoor shoes in order to take part.

A fee applies for each youth that attends.

Girls team claims U19 territorial crown

The Coral Harbour U19 girls team romped its way to the territorial A Division banner at the Super Soccer tournament in Yellowknife May 4 to 6.

"The girls' win was everything to the community and that's super important to us because without the community we really wouldn't be going anywhere," said head coach Alyssa Whitney. "That tournament is the one they practice hard for two or three times a week and look so forward to attending. It's definitely their Stanley Cup event of the year."

Coral defeated Hay River's Diamond Jenness High School by a score of 7-1 to claim A Division gold at the

event. The Coral squad only lost one game during the tournament.

The Coral U15 boys team lost in its semifinal, while the Rankin Inlet U15 boys took silver, losing in the A final to St. Patrick's High School of Yellowknife.

Whitney said the girls on the U19 team have been playing together for quite a number of years and know each other really well. It seems they've developed an innate sense of where their teammates are going to be on the field at any given time, she said.

"They have a super-good connection with each other," she said. "They worked super well both on and off the field, and that made a huge difference."

Coral's U15 girls won silver at

last year's Super Soccer tournament and about half the players from that team joined this year's U19 squad, she said.

The level of competition this year was much tougher than what they'd faced in previous years, said Whitney.

"It seems to be the small towns have the better teams right now, so there was some major competition at this year's event," she said.

The bigger communities all had between two to four teams at this year's Super Soccer tournament, which spread out their overall talent level quite a bit. Being a smaller community was actually an advantage to Coral because they were able to choose the best players from the entire community to make

one strong team, said Whitney.

"Another advantage for us is having the use of the gym whenever we want, meaning we can practice anytime we want," she said.

The residents of Coral Harbour came together to raise the necessary funds to send the youths to the tournament. None of it would have been possible without their efforts, she said.

"We had to raise nearly $75,000 between the two teams for us to be able to go to Super Soccer," said Whitney. "The community supports all our bake sales, penny sales, bingo games and movie nights and, without that support, we would never be able to raise that kind of money to go to the tournament."

The Coral U19 girls team only

has one player aging-out this year and Whitney said the players are already ramping up their spirits and looking forward to playing in the coming year.

"The players, both boys and girls, came to me this past week and asked if we could still continue to hold our weekly practice sessions even though our season has technically ended," she said.

There are other events like the annual territorial tournament and the Arctic Winter Games qualifiers, which the Coral teams might attend, but they're primarily funded by Sport Nunavut and Nunavut Soccer.

"Super Soccer is the one we raise money all year to go to," said Whitney. "It's definitely the biggest one of the year our players anticipate."

Iqaluit program crosses fitness with fun New Kidfit class begins this week

Youth in Iqaluit will have an opportunity to get fit this summer as the city opens a new Kidfit class this week.

The City of Iqaluit will debut the new class this Tuesday in the community curling rink after the city decided to not re-open the indoor skate park that previously occupied the space. The city states the new class will be aimed at 10- to 14-year-olds and will improve the strength, cardiovascular endurance and flexibility of those who attend the program.

"It has a wide variety of activities, and our hope is to get kids aged 10 that aren't into hockey and to get them into something that is more challenging physically to develop those skills," said Stephanie Clark, recreation manager with the City of Iqaluit.

Clark says the idea behind the course is to first get them comfortable and supported

in a fitness space with body movement exercises before they move on to more challenging exercises that involve weights.

"The idea behind it is twofold, the first fold is to create a space where kids are supported and introduce them to a wide range of physical activity. The second is to introduce them into tougher exercises," said Clark.

Alex McDermott and Robert Doig, who have been previously involved with the aquatic centre and a number of fitness programs with the city, will be running the camp.

The instructors were chosen in order to give the kids in attendance positive role models to look up to in terms of fitness.

"We chose Alex and Robert because they are wellknown and well-connected in the city and are familiar with these spaces," said Clark. "It's important to have local kids, and to give people to look up to that are doing positive

McDermott is a registered lifeguard with the city as well as a registered Canfitpro personal trainer. Doig is currently in the process of becoming a certified trainer and has been working very closely with the city's fitness centre co-ordinator to get up to speed with his instructor certifications.

It is Clark's hope that children who enroll in the

program will come out of it feeling able to pursue fitness goals on their own with the foundation skills to confidently use spaces such as the aquatic centre and accompanying fitness centre.

"We are hoping to have a group of 14-year-olds with a base knowledge of physical activity so that they can go into a fitness space where normally it is intimidating," said

Clark.

The program will officially begin later this week, however the city held two free demo sessions last week in order to iron out any wrinkles that arose. Clark said that each session was well-attended.

The classes will run every Tuesday and Thursday May 29 to June 28 from 4-6 p.m.

If the program is successful and the community shows

a desire to keep it running the city says that it will look into hosting future Kidfit programs.

"If it is demonstrated as a desire we would love to carry this on," said Clark.

"This was a program that has been kicking around in the back of our minds, and it was because instructors said that they would be willing to do this."
