Women's shelters enter a new era New board elected, new staff and new systems in place

After a tumultuous year, YWCA Agvvik Nunavut has completed its reboot with a new board of directors elected March 22 at the organization's annual general meeting.

Agvvik is the volunteer organization that runs the two women's shelters in Iqaluit.

Qimaavik is a 26-bed shelter for women fleeing domestic violence and Sivummut is a 12-bed shelter for women facing homelessness. Both provide shelter for the children of these women.

"This past year has been particularly challenging, but I am pleased to report that we are ready to move forward with a new and effective board in the aftermath of the financial scandal involving our terminated executive director," said outgoing president Heather Daley.

The new board is comprised of president Alethea Arnaquq-Baril, vice-president Tony Canny, treasurer Debbie Lyng, secretary Lucy Wilson and directors Hilary Burns and Bernadine Rogers.

Terminated executive director Suny Jacob left behind an organization marred by logistical and financial chaos that continues to be investigated by officials.

Daley and outgoing treasurer Nalini Vaddapalli will remain available to the new directors for a seamless transition.

"YWCA Agvvik has submitted a comprehensive workplan to the (Government of Nunavut) to address the forensic audit report.

This will be implemented and monitored throughout 2018," said Daley. "This will free up YWCA Agvvik staff to focus on providing front-line shelter services, information and referral and crisis intervention for women."

Daley went on to explain that since May 2017, Agvvik has improved financial controls, operational policies and practices, improved its relationship with the Department of Family Services and hired professionals, including a new bookkeeper, to support its work. YWCA Canada is providing support and training for the new board.

Rogers provided her own report to the dozen in attendance at the meeting, outlining the work accomplished over the previous nine months.

"We are celebrating a complex and ongoing recovery this evening even though there is still a lot of hard work ahead to refine systems and keep them on track in a sustainable way," said Rogers.

"We are building an excellent team to continue to tackle the revival of Qimaavik and Sivummut."

Rogers noted that shelter director Jeannie Bishop is working to ensure Qimaavik provides a culturally relevant, strength-based and trauma-informed environment.

"I would also like to recognize Napatchie Lyta, our acting programming coordinator, who has deep connections within the Inuit community," she said. "The minute she joined the team she began work in earnest by providing programming and supports and outreaching to other service providers,

especially those with traditional knowledge, as well as those providing both skill-building and recreational opportunities for women and children residing at the shelters."

Rogers outlined the extensive reorganization process, the comprehensive programming being offered, the staff training now in place, currently-funded projects, as well as proposals for new projects. Finally she said the organization continues to advocate for second-stage housing "for the most vulnerable women and children in Canada."

"Did you know that Nunavut is the only province or territory that does not provide second-stage housing for women and children fleeing domestic violence?" Rogers asked.

"Without second-stage housing, hope is lost. Without the stability of housing, it is extremely unlikely that women caught in the cycle of violence will be able to find safety, dignity and peace of mind to raise their children … These are women who want to walk in their communities free from fear and to be able to dream again."

Ida Atagoyuk, Agvvik's resident elder, expressed her appreciation for the changes she's seen taking place.

Bennett visits capital for consultations Federal government works to implement Indigenous rights plan before next election

With little fanfare, Minister of CrownIndigenous Relations and Northern Affairs Carolyn Bennett visited Iqaluit April 5 and 6 for consultations with Inuit.

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau announced Feb. 14 that the federal government would develop a Recognition and Implementation of Rights Framework in partnership with Inuit, First Nations and Metis.

"The federal government's absence over generations in recognizing and implementing Indigenous rights has resulted in social and economic exclusion, uncertainty and litigation – when our shared focus should have always been on creating prosperity and opportunity for everyone," Trudeau said in the House of Commons.

He further promised engagement would continue throughout the spring and that it was the government's "firm intention to have the framework introduced this year and implemented before the next election."

With an election scheduled for Oct. 21, 2019, the government has 18 months to meet its implementation date.

Bennett was in Iqaluit for two days to meet with Inuit groups in Nunavut.

"On Thursday, April 5 she will meet with Inuit leaders, elders, women and artists. She will then meet with the Government of Nunavut, as well as Inuit students on Friday, April 6," stated Indigenous and Northern Affairs Canada (INAC) spokesperson Edith Pedneault

via e-mail.

Pedneault also said the meetings are closed to the media.

The framework's intention is to address the unfulfilled rights of Indigenous people as per Section 35 of the Constitution Act which recognized and affirmed 35 years ago Aboriginal and treaty rights.

"You see, the challenge – then and now – is that while Section 35 recognizes and affirms Aboriginal and treaty rights, those rights have not been implemented by our governments," said Trudeau.

INAC has so far publicly posted on its website summaries of two weeks' worth of engagements that took place in February immediately after the announcement.

Between Feb. 15 and 17, Bennett met with leaders in New Brunswick, Nova Scotia and Newfoundland and Labrador, including Mi'gmag and Wolastoqey (Maliseet), Mi'kmaq and Peskotomuhkati chiefs, women, elders and youth and academics.

Topics discussed to improve the lives of Indigenous people included: health, including mental health and if/how this is to be funded; education, including the need for selfdetermination in curriculum development, as a way out of current social conditions; economic development and empowerment, in particular looking at revenue sharing and taxation.

Community supports, more and better access to housing, legal standing, hunting, land claims, land ownership, land use, environment, protecting and promoting language and child welfare were also listed as topics of discussion.

My son Colin Jr Tiriaqnar Inuksaq, age 11, beside a caribou his grandfather Pierre Niptayok caught on October 27, 2017. My son's name got drawn for a polar PETER ARULAAQ GIBBONS bear tag from hunters and trappers, so his grandfather took him polar bear hunting. They didn't track any Coral Harbour polar bear, so my father caught a caribou on their way March 6, 2018 when I was in Coral Harbour we were home to Kugaaruk. Colin Jr is wearing caribou clothes. following the polar bear with Noah Kadlak.

You know how when dogs are pulling the sled, in reality we think the rope has to be tight 'cause it's being pulled? Well when all the dogs are on full speed it's the opposite. Look at the rope they're pulling, all of them look loose.

At this point I think and look at my smallest dog hoping it keeps up 'cause for sure if that smallest dog trips, it's a bad scenario. But as usual I have to keep calm. If I rush my head I'm no good, so you see me there, relaxing pretty good. This was in Clyde Inlet going to Clyde River in beautiful spring, maybe 2004.

Last month we reported that Agnico Eagle Mines was not looking to follow a mining industry trend to use automated – driverless – haul trucks for its Nunavut operations, despite the fact that the company has had success with the technology elsewhere, including in Quebec.

The distance from the required standard of internet service was cited as a factor working against the technology here. Maintaining an entry-level opportunity for Inuit was also cited as a priority.

So when Agnico Eagle emailed us after the fact to say they were indeed considering using automated haul trucks in Nunavut, the reaction from our readers was predictable.

"If my father was still around to hear this, he'd speak up against this," wrote one visitor to NunavutNews.com. "He supported the mine opening just to support Inuit getting job opportunities, especially with haul trucks."

Another wrote that if robots were being considered to replace humans at Northern mine sites, the mines should be shut down.

A heart of flesh There is an interesting phrase that goes something like this – you either have a ‘heart of stone or a heart of flesh'. Let's have a go at this phrase.

Every moment we are engaged, involved or just observing, somehow we become involved either through actions or reactions or just being in the vicinity of the activity or incident. Everyone has a choice in how we conduct ourselves and people say, ‘to each his own'.

This is where our upbringing comes into the situation.

are showing a heart of stone. When someone is talking down to someone else and you do not step in to assist the weaker one, you are showing a heart of stone.

How and why did I say this?

You as an observer of this act or actions certainly do not want to be treated like this, so you do what you can to stop this negative behaviour. This begins to unfold from a heart of stone to a heart of flesh.

You empathize with the one being picked on.

Imagine what a little one is going through when they are being yelled at and pushed around. They want it to stop

so they try and get away but where do they go, who do they approach? I am not suggesting that we step in with every situation but there are times when a quick reaction from you in assisting can stop the bad treatment for the moment.

This is showing the heart of flesh – or your true humanitarianism in helping someone who cannot help themselves.

You can do this for the elder, the child or the one who is afraid.

Nunavut Deaf Society seeks members AGM brings to light the need for home safety for deaf people in the territory

As membership in the Nunavut Deaf Society (NDS) slowly grows, the volunteer organization is turning its energy toward making homes safer for deaf people.

"The deaf people in Rankin Inlet who met with Paige (MacDougall) brought out a concern of health and safety, specifically in terms of fire safety," said NDS president Sandy Kownak.

"They wanted our society to look into the issue and possibly work with the local fire department to start coordinating a project where the deaf people have alarm systems to self-notify of a fire and also to alert a message centre so emergency services can be sent over."

Kownak explained the alarm system is a flashing strobe light.

"There's different levels of flashing that can be set for deaf people. A special high intensity of flashing light can generally wake sleeping people."

There are also vibration systems, which can shake the bed and other types of equipment available.

"It's a high-risk issue," said Kownak.

The home-safety concerns were then brought forward to the deaf society's fourth annual general meeting held March 28 in Iqaluit. AGMs are now conducted by remote video and include professional interpretation from Ottawa. This one included members from Pangnirtung, Baker Lake and Iqaluit.

Paige MacDougall is research director for the Canadian Deafness Research and Training Institute and daughter to the founder Jamie MacDougall and his wife Michele, who have been engaging deaf Nunavummiut for almost 20 years.

MacDougall was in Rankin for 10 days in March presenting new materials. For several

years she has been returning to Rankin Inlet for such workshops.

"We got together daily, deaf persons and their families and we did interpretations of different life-story videos in the various sign languages," said MacDougall.

"One of the most enjoyable aspects of that group was certainly the recording of new signs in Inuit Sign Language. There's dialectical variations and the deaf people are extraordinarily excited to learn from one another and incorporate the signs, making the sign language richer."

MacDougall offered the word "Sunday" as an example.

"There were four people at one point and I asked them all to tell me what their sign for Sunday was. We laughed so hard. They were completely different signs," she said.

"Depending on whether you associate Sunday with the church or relaxation or with family, each person's sign sort of summed up what Sunday means to them. And everyone was really enthusiastic about learning the different signs."

MacDougall says from the videos she recorded during her time in Rankin, new flash cards and other materials will be produced.

A video, which accompanies an illustrated book, of the late Yvo Samgushak, a highly respected deaf hunter and artist from Rankin Inlet, is available at the institute's website, as well as Isuma TV's website.

Kownak says the goal is a comprehensive Nunavut-wide sign language.

With 20 members of an estimated 150 deaf people in the territory, Kownak says the organization wants to reach out to include more deaf people. As a volunteer organization with very few resources, their only tools are social media and referrals.

"We're still trying to get into the school system to share our tools," said Kownak.

Kownak and her deaf son Clayton Ungungai visited Nakasuk School in Iqaluit, where teacher Nadia Sammurtok gave them the opportunity to show her class that Inuit Sign Language exists.

"We were warmly welcomed by the students, they were totally engaged and willing to sign and learn," Kownak said.

"They were very curious and interested just to hear there are deaf people in Nunavut."

Increased membership in the society would bring increased opportunities to partner with organizations and school in those communities.

"That's what the Nunavut Deaf Society set out to do, to be that voice for the deaf," Kownak said. "We're a great resource to come to in terms of anything deaf in Nunavut. We're very interested in working with other organizations."

Big boost for Inuit art in U.S.

Ann Arbor, Michigan An American couple has gifted their US$2.5-million Inuit art collection and donated US$2 million to create an Inuit art program at the University of Michigan Museum of Art (UMMA) in Ann Arbor, Mich.

Philip and Kathy Power's assortment of Inuit art includes more than 200 stone carvings and prints, primarily from mid20th century Baffin Island.

"Over the years, our family built a collection of Inuit art that ranks among the best in the world," Philip Power said.

"Kathy and I decided to gift it to UMMA so as many people as possible could experience it and understand how Inuit people understand and cope with their harsh Arctic environment – now under dire threat from climate change."

The Power Family Program for Inuit Art will debut in spring 2019 with an exhibition of selected works from the Power family collection.

"Thanks to the extraordinary generosity of Phil and Kathy Power, UMMA will establish itself as a national centre for Inuit art," said UMMA director Christina Olsen. "Their gift will enable the museum to share the art of the Inuit people with audiences throughout the United States."

Culture at school

Kimmirut Students at Qaqqalik School learned traditional skills in March, thanks to the Kimmirut District Education Authority.

The education authority hired two elders with the intent to bring more culture into the school.

Elder Elizabeth Itulu taught girls sewing, while elder Mark Pitsiulak taught carving to the boys.

Both elders are known for the excellence and beauty of their work.

Hamlet Day in Pang

Panniqtuuq/Pangnirtung The community of Pangnirtung celebrated Hamlet Day April 3 with games, a feast and a dance.

"The hamlet is having games such as ice sculpture, iglubuilding, craziest-sled contest, furthest-slide contest, uphillrun race," said senior administrative officer Ron Ladd.

There were games for children and adults, including the ever-popular dice game later in the evening.

During the feast and dance in the evening, an elimination dance was held, with Simeonie Keenainuk, Chris Aningmiu, Joilee Veevee, George Qaqasaq and Ben Qaqasiq providing the music.

Regilee Mike was the big winner for the elimination dance and Elisapee Kisa won the ice auger draw.

Science fair, take two!

Kugluktuk Kugluktuk was prepared to take a second crack at hosting the Kitikmeot Regional Science Fair this past Saturday.

The event was originally scheduled to be held on March 17, but, as ingenious as the student scientists may be, they couldn't control the inclement weather that prevented flights from getting into the community a few weeks ago.

Qaggiavuut on its way to China

Nunavut The Qaggiavuut Society is travelling to China April 9 to 13 with Canadian Heritage Minister Melanie Joly.

Joly, who is leading the first Canada-China Creative Industries Trade Mission in Shanghai and Beijing, invited Qaggiavuut to be one of the representatives of Canada's creative industries.

Qaggiavuut will be matched with Chinese performing arts organizations, performing arts centres, arts investors and artists in China with the hope of building cultural partnerships.

"We are an organization of artists and lifelong Nunavummiut and it is an honour to be included in Minister Joly's trade mission," stated executive director Ellen Hamilton, who is travelling with board member Miali Buscemi.

Buscemi was the first Inuk woman to be a member of the Stratford Festival theatre company.

"Miali Buscemi is an example of one of our artists who can soar to the highest levels when provided with a supportive space to be a performing artist," said Hamilton.

Coast Guard recruits in the capital

Iqaluit The Canadian Coast Guard is offering a three-day workshop to recruit trainees for its Marine Communications and Traffic Services in Iqaluit April 9 to 11.

"Currently, there are multiple positions available in Iqaluit.

The recruitment process is an inventory and remains open all year for applications; however, aptitude testing sessions are scheduled only a few times a year," said Lauren Solski, communications advisor for Fisheries, Oceans and the Canadian Coast Guard, via e-mail.

Those interested can learn about the online job application process April 9 from 1 to 7 p.m. in the Nunavut Arctic College lab room. The workshop is on a drop-in basis and staff will be available to help.

On April 10, a pre-training session for the aptitude test will be held at the same place from 1 to 7 p.m. "Interested candidates can drop in during this time to take practice tests and participate in exam exercises that will help refresh many cognitive skills that will be tested," according to a news release.

Finally, the aptitude test will be offered, again at the college, on April 11 from 5 to 7 p.m.

The work is open to anyone with an interest and who has graduated high school.

The job includes monitoring marine frequencies and responding to distress calls, protecting the environment and the safety of shipping by screening vessels entering Canadian waters, delivering information and advice to regulate marine traffic movement and taking appropriate action to ensure the safe and efficient movement of vessels in Canadian waters.

Candidates who pass the test will be invited for job interviews on April 12 and 13.

Alianait announces festival line-up

Nunavut Alianait is ready to greet summer with the announcement of its 2018 festival line-up and Nunavut artists figure prominently.

Lazarus Qattalik of Iglulik, hot from recent performances in Whitehorse, Yukon and Iqaluit, will hit the stage.

"Lazarus had hearts melting at his debut Alianait performance earlier this year," said executive director Heather Daley.

"His first album Iqippagit is already becoming a household favourite among Inuktitut music lovers. He will be joined by his bandmates Allan Kangok and Billy Jay Ammaq at this year's festival."

Agaaqtoq of Arviat will also hit the stage.

"He is considered one of Nunavut's best rising talents, winning the hearts of his audience with his engaging performance and timeless Inuktitut songs," said Daley.

Also from Arviat comes The Arviat Band.

"The Arviat Band has been together for over 20 years, playing at countless festivals all over Nunavut and Northern Quebec. Their Inuktitut lyrics are unforgettable," said Daley.

From Arctic Bay comes Leetia Kalluk.

"First prize winner of the 2017 Qilaut Song Contest, Leetia Kalluk is a fresh face in the Nunavut music scene and we are delighted to include her in this year's festival line-up," said Daley.

Artists from the rest of the world include: Greenland's popular band Nanook, Leela Gilday from Yellowknife, Great Big Sea founding member Séan McCann, Juno-nominated Indigenous cellist and composer Cris Derksen, Twin Flames, Australia's This Way North, singer-songwriter Evan James Redsky, Greenlandic children's entertainer Hinnarik, Toronto's Jane's Party, Old Man Luedecke from Halifax, Greenland's Hans-Henrik Suersaq Poulsen and others.

The festival will again include a collaboration featuring Indigenous artists from around the world directed by Sylvia Cloutier. The festival takes place Canada Day long weekend, June 29 to July 2.

Easter Sunday started off with an Easter egg hunt organized by Pangnirtung's recreation committee, with children fanning out to find their chocolate treats hidden on the land.

Then came a community feast of inussiutit, organized

The community welcomed a dozen guests from the Iglulik church, who shared in seal and char. Jenna Kilabuk is the hamlet councillor on the recreation committee, while Delia Young is the councilor on the wellness committee.

Kitikmeot entrepreneurs on the rise Six-month Inspire Nunavut program wraps up

Inspire Nunavut, a program that trains entrepreneurs, is complete in Cambridge Bay and Kugluktuk, but the business benefits for local youth are just beginning.

Following six months of training, youth from both communities are in the process of launching ventures.

Kugluktuk's Luke Ayaligak has developed a website, Ayaligak's Arctic Arts, to promote local artwork.

"Local artists here have limited consumers in town," he said. "I'm looking to be an outlet for them to put their artwork on the internet so they get a wider viewing audience and better asking price."

He said several carvers have expressed interest in using his services.

Ayaligak hopes to take his website live in a few weeks. Eventually, he would like to move into tourism outfitting, he added.

He said Inspire Nunavut taught him business models, terminology, creating a business plan, some basic accounting, how to fill out forms and using the internet for research and marketing.

"They taught us a lot," he said. "These Inspire Nunavut guys really inspired us and opened our eyes on how I could go about doing this... it's been really helpful."

Fellow program participant Ian Taptuna has already lined up customers for TAPS Servicing, a janitorial company for residential and office locations. He will also clean and service water tanks during the summer.

"He's got contracts already in place. He's thrilled, the community's thrilled to see this and it's going to be a terrific option for a lot of people," said Paul Williams, Inspire Nunavut's instructor in Kugluktuk.

Adrian Kudlak is planning to start a customized clothing business called Arctic Outfits. He's aiming to "empower youth through design."

Danielle Adjun is behind Aqiattuqtuq, which will offer a range of healthy, affordable, convenient snacks and beverages for residents and visitors to Kugluktuk.

A market for jewelry In Cambridge Bay, Elijah Aitaok will market his jewelry, putting to use skills he learned through the jewelry and metalwork program at Nunavut Arctic College five years ago.

Aitaok, 23, has been periodically making necklaces and bracelets from copper, brass and mild steel. Karine Smith, Inspire Nunavut's director of operations, helped him come up with a new idea as well: turning spent bullets into jewelry. He's also planning to craft some charms to go along with the bracelets. Aitaok

said he's been investing time in raising the profile of his Facebook page, titled Elijah Aitaok, Jeweler.

"It's slowly gaining ground. I just need to continue to interact with my viewers and get them to show others what I can make," he said.

"It's all in the marketing. It helps that you from Nunavut News is interviewing me... hopefully, through my own sheer willpower, I'll just take it on from there."

Donna Lyall is planning to push forward with a hair and nail salon called Memogana's Beauty Parlour. She figures she will open her doors between this summer and the end of the year.

"Because I'm so busy and apparently fund-

ing takes a few months," she said of the delay.

"And I'm thinking of going to (enrol as) a nail technician so I can do the nails. I couldn't find anyone in the community to do nails so I might have to go and do that myself."

In addition to her business plans, Lyall took on leadership duties when the Inspire Nunavut instructor in Cambridge Bay left unexpectedly with a few weeks remaining in the program.

Clarissa Vandenbrink will offer special events planning through Ubluriaq Occasions, which will include gift baskets.

Photographer Courtney Nakahok will put her talents with a camera to use through Hakalikitaak Images, which will also feature postcards and canvases.

Youth found safe and sound

Sanirajak/Hall Beach Iglulik search-and-rescue successfully tracked down a couple of youth reported missing between Hall Beach and Iglulik last week.

Malinda Maliki, 23 and Nathan Ukalik, 19, left Hall Beach for Iglulik by snowmobile in the late afternoon of April 1. The trip is normally about two hours long. Concerned family members contacted Hall Beach search-andrescue around 1 a.m. on April 2, according to Kyle Issigaitok, Hall Beach's search-and-rescue coordinator.

Issigaitok and Jeff Ammaklak went out shortly thereafter, searching the regularly-travelled snowmobile route all the way to Iglulik and back.

No luck.

"It was urgent because they didn't have any proper equipment with them," he said, referring to a camp stove and an emergency locator device.

Several more searchers from Hall Beach and a few from Iglulik joined the search, but the efforts in Hall Beach had to be halted for about four to five hours when whiteout conditions developed, he said.

Searchers from Iglulik located Maliki and Ukalik during the afternoon of April 2, close to 50 km northwest of Hall Beach. Their snowmobile had broken down.

"They'd been walking for 12 hours straight and Iglulik ground search-and-rescue were lucky enough to find them first," Issigaitok said, adding that Maliki and Ukalik were physically unharmed. "They were just exhausted."

The Iglulik volunteers were Bosco Attagutaluk, Celestino Amarualik and Daniel Attagutaluk.

The other Hall Beach searchers comprised Cain Pikuyak, Jesse Nasook, Tyler Itturiligaq, Lloyd Satuqsi, Laimiki Ulluapak, Tetan Maliki, Abraham Oolaalaq and Steve Morgan.

Weather plays games with tournament Toonik Tyme Tournament finishes late but champions get crowned

That sneaky Mother Nature and her weather games.

She very nearly scuttled the Iqaluit Amateur Hockey Association's annual Toonik Tyme Tournament but the city made sure it got done and sent everyone home safe and happy.

This year's tournament, which happened from March 28 to April 2, brought together more than two dozen teams from the capital, Pangnirtung, Rankin Inlet, Cape Dorset and Kuujjuaq to compete in divisions ranging from mites to midgets. There was also a girls' division, which had two teams from Iqaluit and Pangnirtung competing; the Iqaluit squad was joined by some girls who made the trip in from Pond Inlet.

Wanda Joy, the association's president, said this year's turnout was typical of past years.

"The midgets had more teams than last year," she said. "It all depends on the year.

Some divisions have more than other years but the total number is similar to past years."

All of the divisions had championship games with the exception of the mites, where everyone went home with a gold medal, said Joy. "It's all about having fun for them," she said.

Everything was supposed to be wrapped up on April 1 but a blizzard that blanketed the capital caused everything to be shut down for a period of time, meaning the gold medal games for some of the divisions had to be pushed back to the morning of April 2. The midgets and peewees got to play their championship contests on April 1 after both the Arctic Winter Games and Arnaitok Arenas

opened back up that evening.

"It was quite the job having to re-schedule everything because of the weather," said Joy. "We had a big time crunch because teams were supposed to start leaving on the Tuesday morning."

But the weather still didn't co-operate and the April 2 games were in limbo as the city closed both arenas until later in the evening, when the go-ahead was given to open the doors and play the games. Joy said had it not been for the staff at both arenas, it wouldn't have ended up the way it did.

"They got out there, cleared the snow and helped us get finished in time for everyone to get home," she said.

"A big thanks to them and all of the volunteers, scorekeepers and officials because a lot of them gave up their long weekend to make this happen."

SPORTS Check

The women's team of Geneva Chislett, Diane North, Robyn Mackey and Valerie Kosmenko, also from the Iqaluit Curling Club, suffered the same fate as they lost all nine of their games in the round-robin and seeding round.

Impressive turnout but no titles

No luck for Nunavut

Stratford, Ont. Nunavut's best senior curlers were on the ice at the Canadian Senior Curling Championships in Stratford, Ont., late last month.

The men's team hailed from the Iqaluit Curling Club with Peter Mackey, Jeff Nadeau, Greg Howard and Ed North wearing the territory's colours. Unfortunately, they failed to hit the win column, dropping all nine of their games – six in the round-robin and three in the seeding round, which was for the non-playoff teams.

Somba K'e/Yellowknife For the first time in a long time, the non-Yellowknife teams outnumbered the Yellowknife teams at the First Air Rec Hockey Tournament and that included eight teams from Nunavut.

The 38th annual edition of the largest senior men's tournament north of 60 saw teams from Rankin Inlet, Iqaluit, Gjoa Haven, Kugaaruk, Kugluktuk and Cambridge Bay hit the ice from March 28 to April 1 to take on teams from the NWT and Saskatchewan in the hopes of winning one of the five divisions up for grabs.

Dave Earle, the tournament's chairperson, said having eight teams from the territory come to play was great to see.

"We had great help from First Air with that," he said.

"Without the deal they gave the out-of-town teams, they wouldn't have been here."

Oldtimers hit the ice

Somba K'e/Yellowknife Yellowknife hosted the Canadian North Balsillie Cup oldtimers tournament April 5 to 8.

Nunavut once again had representation as the Gjoa Haven Snowy Owls, Baker Lake Grey Wolves and Rankin Inlet Bears were scheduled to hit the ice for games in the roundrobin.

The playoffs were set to begin on April 7 with the finals for all divisions happening on April 8. See the next edition of Nunavut News for the recap.

Celebrating life through hockey Tootoo family happy with how son's memorial tourney is progressing

The Tootoo family is pleased with the direction the Terence Tootoo Memorial (TTM) senior men's hockey championship has been taking.

The tournament, arguably the most popular sporting event in Rankin Inlet, was renamed the Terence Tootoo Memorial Cup last year in memory of Terence Tootoo, who died by suicide at the age of 22 in 2002.

It was formerly called the First Air Avataq Cup. Terence's dad, Barney, said he really didn't know what to expect from the community during the tournament's first year bearing his son's name in 2017, but that everyone seemed to want to jump on board with the event and he saw that as a good thing.

The committee running the event did an excellent job, said Barney, who reserved special praise for committee member Troy Aksalnik.

"If it wasn't for (them) and the other guys working behind the scenes, it wouldn't have gone off as good as it did," said Barney.

"I didn't really know myself how much work goes into hosting an event like this."

Barney said he remains a bigtime hockey fan who likes to sit back, watch the games and enjoy the tournament.

"I think we're on the right road to having it seen as a celebration of life through hockey that it was meant to be. A lot of the guys, after the tournament was over, came to have a few pops at our place and they were all really happy with how things went.

Barney said he was sorry Baker Lake didn't send a team this year and he was also disappointed Iqaluit also missed the tournament. He said a city the size of Iqaluit should be able to gather enough players together who would want to come to Rankin and play in the TTM. "Hopefully, they'll jump on board next year because it adds to the tour-

nament when Iqaluit is here," he said.

"A lot of people were asking why Iqaluit didn't come again because they all miss that big rivalry between Iqaluit and Rankin."

Barney said he really liked all the individual award trophies being named after people in Rankin who love the game of hockey, which was another idea the tournament's committee members came up with.

"It keeps surprising me what

(Aksalnik) and those guys keep having up their sleeves for the TTM," he said. "These guys put a lot of thought into how they want things to be for the tournament, so I'm pretty sure next year's will be even bigger and better."

Barney's wife Rose said she hoped her son Jordin, a native of Rankin Inlet and the first Inuk hockey player to play in the NHL, will be able to come to next year's tournament.

Jordin is currently playing for the Rockford IceHogs of the American Hockey League, while under contract with the Chicago Blackhawks of the NHL. As a mother, it's always hard to get through some parts of the tournament, she said.

"But, deep-down inside, it means so much to our family," said Rose.

"The people have accepted it as a fitting memorial to Terence."

Championship banner reveal … what could go wrong? the funniest and most embarrassing things that could have happened. Some of the Astros players, notably Justin Verlander, couldn't hold back the giggles as they watched from the first base line. Yeah, I snickered a bit as well. Thankfully, the dastardly curtain was whipped off and the crowd burst into cheers, some of which I think was for the crew that helped get the banner uncovered.

But if you look close at the video, you would have noticed a banner poking fun at the 2017 Super Bowl, which reminded people that with James McCarthy the Atlanta Falcons held down a 28-3 lead against the New England Patriots before blowing it big time and losing. Reminders, reminders.

The ending of the movie is pretty tame but try and get your hands on the Swedish version and you will snort your morning coffee when you see the final frame. I'm not giving any hints nor will I ruin the fun for you. It's worth it and don't say I didn't warn you.

Anyway, on to other things which were worth the wait, especially in Houston:

It's only a banner Major League Baseball's 2018 season is off and running and with it came the Houston Astros being able to celebrate their World Series triumph last November.

As is the custom, the reigning champs unveil their championship banner as soon as they can host their first home game and the Astros did just that in front of a sold-out and noisy home crowd on April 2. Didn't go as planned, though.

Once the announcement was made by the team's public address announcer, everything was supposed to go into motion with the fireworks and grand unveiling. The curtain covering the banner didn't co-operate as it didn't unhinge itself at first, setting off a cacophony of scrambling with one person running up a ladder to try and get the banner and someone or some people below it with leaf blowers trying to blow it off.

What's the big deal?

Some people think there are these unwritten rules in sports that need to be followed.

Chance Sisco of the Baltimore Orioles apparently broke one of those rules on March 31.

The Orioles were playing the Minnesota Twins that day and were losing 7-0 in the bottom of the ninth inning. Sisco came up with one out and everyone at Camden Yards that day thought the Orioles would simply play out the string and try again tomorrow.

Sisco, though, laid a bunt down the third base line with the Twins infield playing the shift and easily reached first on a bunt single.

Smart play, I say and more players should be doing it. If the defence is going to play you

that way, play them right back. Besides, I'd want to at least try and win the game. That's why you play. Can't do it if you don't have runners on base and a seven-run deficit has been overturned more than once in Major League Baseball history.

Some of the Twins didn't like it – pitcher Jose Berrios told reporters that what Sisco did wasn't good for baseball. Whine me another one, Jose. The Twins acted like a bunch of punks who got outsmarted by the pipsqueak.

Simple solution: don't play the shift then.

Sisco simply took advantage of the Twins' setup and exploited it. Hell, I'd do it, too. As I said, if they were going to play the shift, play it back on them. And if the Orioles had come back to win – which they didn't – Sisco would have been the catalyst.

Babe Ruth would be proud Remember that time when Babe Ruth promised to hit a home run for Johnny Sylvester in 1926? I don't but it was a great story and it apparently spurred Sylvester on to a full recovery from what was ailing him in a hospital bed.

Hanley Ramirez of the Boston Red Sox just became the new Babe Ruth when he promised a young fan in Miami his jersey if he hit a home run against the Marlins on April 3. You knew it was going to happen because things like that always have a way of playing themselves out.

The look on the young fan's face is priceless and once again shows that yes, there is still plenty of good in professional sports.

And finally …

Good Idea: Nah, I can't do this.

I'm just going to dive right into this (pun firmly intended) because it needs to be named and shamed. In fact, this one needs to be put in lights and given its own sign like the one in Hollywood.

It's from a few weeks ago – March 20 to be exact and I couldn't get to it because I was busy making the Arctic Winter Games look good with the help of Cody Punter, Paul Bickford and Dylan Short – but it's still worth derision.

Our flopper this time is Jean Meneses, a striker who plays for the Universidad de Concepcion soccer team in Chile.

They were playing Colo-Colo in a game that day. Meneses had the ball in the ColoColo penalty area and fell.

Not from anything that touched him. He just fell. And was awarded a penalty. And then scored the winning goal on the ensuing spot kick.

Now, as bad as that was, Meneses wasn't even embarrassed by it. No, he actually said the following in a post-match interview: "One has to take advantage of the fact that attackers cannot be touched inside the penalty area. So I played with a little bit of vividness and let myself fall."

The next time someone tells me soccer players are unfairly maligned because of diving, I will point to this quote and tell them to get stuffed.

Land use plan, women and quality of life focus of mining symposium

The 2018 Nunavut Mining Symposium promises to highlight the most topical subjects in the industry today, with emphasis on the Nunavut-wide land use plan, as well as gender, Indigenous and quality of life issues.

“It’s going to be a good year this year. It’s our 21st and we’re expecting around 400 delegates,” said president of the Nunavut Mining Symposium Society Bernie MacIsaac, adding accommodations were a challenge due to hotel closures this past year.

But that’s all sorted and delegates are housed for the event, which takes place from April 9 to 12.

The Hot Topics session, introduced last year, will this year tackle the infamous Nunavut land-use plan, which is still in the making.

Last year, the topic was caribou protections.

“This is an opportunity for people to give their views on the land-use plan and hopefully they’ll be heard and listened to because I think the territory kind of looks at mining and resource

development as an opportunity for job creation, business creation,” said MacIsaac, who is also the assistant deputy minister for the Government of Nunavut’s Department of Economic Development and Transportation.

While he acknowledges that millions of decisions are involved in the Nunavut-wide land-use plan, MacIsaac said people must compromise.

The symposium offers a space for that.

“What’s important to industry and what’s important to communities might be different. It’s a pretty daunting task to bring that all together. And if I’m not mistaken, this is probably the largest land-use plan on the planet,” said MacIsaac.

The speakers for that session are the director general for Natural Resources and Environment, Indigenous and Northern Affairs Canada Mark Hopkins, director of policy and planning for Nunavut Tunngavik Inc. Hannah Uniuqsaraq, director of policy and planning for the Nunavut Planning Commission Brian Aglukark, president of the NWT/NU Chamber of Mines Gary Vivian

and assistant deputy minister for the GN’s Department of Environment Steve Pinksen.

An all-female panel session is devoted to gender diversity in the industry. MacIsaac says most of Agnico Eagle’s truck drivers at its Baker Lake operations are Inuit women.

“I’ve heard it said that they like women driving their trucks because women tend to take care of their vehicles better than men,” he said.

The topic is timely as the federal government has recently proposed to include gender-based analysis in environmental assessments.

“I can see why they would think that way. I would think they would include Indigenous issues in environmental assessment, as well,” he said.

A session on Indigenous involvement in mining is also scheduled.

“We’re going to have some folks not only from Nunavut but from Greenland there, as well, to help us with that,” he noted.

Another panel, among many, will address the new Nunavut government and its mandate.
