Remembering popular entertainer Charlie Panigoniak Northern News Services

Charlie Panigoniak died on March 6.

Premier Joe Savikataaq released a statement to recognize the Chesterfield Inlet-born entertainer, who had become a long-time resident of Rankin Inlet.

"It is with great sadness that I extend my Charlie condolences to the family and friends of Charlie Panigoniak Panigoniak on his passing earlier today," Savika-

taaq stated. "Charlie's legacy across Nunavut is one of great joy, good humour and inspiring others."

His music is more than well-known in Nunavut, it is beloved and treasured in our communities.

"From his time at the CBC to receiving the Order of Nunavut, his was always a strong voice for Inuit language and the North," the premier added. "I have and will always remain a fan of his songs, his spirit and his many talents."

"Though we mourn his passing, we hold onto his music to

NEWS in Brief inspire and move us for years to come."

Panigoniak, who often sang in Inuktitut, had been diagnosed with Parkinson's disease many years ago.

Obed scolds southern press at historic national TB apology Trudeau: so much to do beyond apology, Nanilavut and mobile clinics

Moments after Inuit from across Inuit Nunangat heard Prime Minister Justin Trudeau deliver a national apology in Iqaluit March 8 for the violation of their human rights during the tuberculosis epidemic in the mid-1900s, southern press demonstrated the very people they'd come to report on did not matter much in relation to the SNCLavalin scandal.

"I think this is something the media should reflect on. There will always be more important stories than the stories of human rights abuses to Inuit," said Inuit Tapiriit Kanatami president Natan Obed in his typically restrained, soft-spoken fashion, as he faced a half-dozen television cameras.

Trudeau, who calmly answered southern press question about the issues plaguing his cabinet, stepped aside for Obed. Meanwhile, Nunavut Tunngavik Inc. president Aluki Kotierk had stood stoically next to Minister of Indigenous Services Seamus O'Regan and Minister of Crown-Indigenous Relations Carolyn Bennett as question after question surfaced about anything but colonialist agendas and the mistreatment of Inuit.

"Every time there is something that happens, such as an apology today, there are other stories in the world," said Obed. "But the fact media passed right by the people whose human rights abuses were not told before the media for decades to other stories of the day is still a reflection on the work that need to happen on reconciliation.

"Inuit matter. This story matters. It is a Canadian story.

I recognize there are other stories that matter, as well, but I do hope, in the future, there can be more respect given to the place and time and the people who deserve having their story told."

Earlier that morning, Trudeau listed – in front of a full house at the Frobisher Inn's banquet rooms, including representatives from across Inuit Nunangat and press – the abuses visited upon Inuit by the federal government, including identifying Inuit by numbers instead of names, Inuit punished for using their language and Inuit forced into settlements where disease ran rampant.

This occurred, said Trudeau, even as southern kids were praised for learning their ABCs and while the government was creating universal health care in the south.

"And 70 years ago, while tuberculosis was raging across Canada, the government responded decisively in the south by opening new clinics and training doctors and nurses," said Trudeau.

"But in the North, the government's approach to TB wasn't to show compassion or care, but to separate families and ignore people's rights."

As Trudeau detailed the egregious effects of government policy – Inuit screened without consent, Inuit sent for months or years to the south without a word to their families, anonymous burials, the absences and silence – Inuit in the room quietly wept.

Trudeau also listed the aftereffects: culture and language eroded, broken families, lives shattered beyond repair.

"Those wrongs will never fade – Canada must carry that guilt and shame," said Trudeau.

"I can't begin to imagine what it would be like to lose someone you love and to go on never knowing what happened."

Obed, for his part, initiated a moment of silence for those lost and never returned.

Kotierk, who emceed the event, had the crowd celebrate those who did return and celebrate the strength, pride and resilience of Inuit.

In both cases, love was the key word, love for the lost and the living.

The Nanilavut Initiative, which has been in the works for a decade and was officially announced with the apology, is intended as a small measure of reparation.

Nanilavut (let's find them) includes a data base, travel funding for families who have learned where their loved ones are buried and funding for grave markers and plaques.

The initiative will also include community-led events and memorials, as well as public education campaigns.

"To keep moving forward with reconciliation, as a country we must all take ownership of our history," said Trudeau.

Trudeau concluded his speech by saying that morning's apology was also a promise.

"It's a promise to never forget the harm that was done to Inuit and to your families," he said. "A promise, on behalf of all Canadians, to build a brighter future. And to build it together."

Trudeau acknowledged Nanilavut and even mobile TB clinics were not enough and that poverty, food insecurity and inadequate housing need to be addressed.

Inuit accounts of the Sir John Franklin shipwrecks are being documented for future generations.

Parks Canada's Franklin Inuit Oral History Project team returned to Gjoa Haven in late February to review maps created based on interviews with 15 Gjoa Haven residents, mostly elders.

They seemed pleased and relieved to be encouraged to tell their stories and share the narrative of their ancestors, according to Edna Elias, the project's lead interviewer.

"As children (and) young adults they were told not to talk about it for fear that lots of qablunaat (white people) would come and take away their land," Elias said. "Many knew (about the Franklin wrecks) and one person had

seen the Erebus from the air as long as 40 years ago. The pilot again told the people to keep it quiet."

The guiding hand of renowned Gjoa Haven historian Louie Kamookak, who died in March 2018, was still felt throughout the past year, according to James Qitsualik, the project's field trip expedition leader.

Kamookak, a key figure in the discovery of the Franklin ship HMS Erebus in 2014, had already chronicled many Inuit place names.

"He put them on the map and then he finally got the recognition. Where oral history wasn't enough or a word wasn't enough, it had to be proven first on the map and then finally be recognized," Qitsualik said. "I remember (Kamookak) starting to collect these place names, all the Inuktitut

names around our area."

Among the hundreds of locations identified in the Inuit language are Sauniqtalik Island, which means place of bones; Qablunaarhiurvik, a place to meet/deal with white people; and Umiaqtalik, which translates as "there is a boat there."

Consistent recollections Other than some slight discrepancies in identifying exact locations, Elias said there was remarkable consistency among the recollections of the interviewees.

"A lot of the stories correlated with each other," said Elias, who was representing research firm Know History.

The wreck of the HMS Terror was located in 2016.

Franklin and his 128 crew members from both ships – who were searching for the Northwest Passage on behalf

of Britain – perished after getting trapped in the Arctic ice in the mid-1840s.

Gjoa Haven Mayor Joanni Sallerina contrasted the fate of the Franklin expedition with that of Norwegian explorer Roald Amundsen and his smaller crew, who received tremendous help from the Inuit over more than two years in the early 1900s, when conditions were better.

Elias said she'd heard about the arduous circumstances of the 1840s during her interviews.

"At the time of Franklin, his crew numbers probably outnumbered the Inuit," Elias said of the plight of the Inuit people at that point in history.

"Times were exceptionally hard, day-to-day living was to merely survive. The expedition numbers were too many mouths to feed. Most died off from starvation, mental illness and natural elements for which they weren't dressed for."

The Franklin Interim Advisory Committee, comprising representatives from Inuit organizations, the GN and the heritage and tourism industries, proposed the oral history project in 2016, shortly after the committee was formed, said Tamara Tarasoff, Parks Canada's project manager for the wrecks of Erebus and Terror.

Kamookak was a strong proponent, she noted.

"There was a desire to collect this information while the elders were still with us," she said. "The committee wanted to make sure that elders and youth had a chance to interact as part of this project so youth could learn from the elders and keep the stories alive."

Barbara Okpik, a Gjoa Haven youth, said she felt lucky to be involved in the project.

"Seeing the elders out on the land, talking about their lives, their history and talking about Franklin from our elders' perspective, it's pretty cool," said Okpik, who joined an August 2018 field trip to Terror Bay. "It's really amazing to me that I've been part of this."

Tarasoff said there's an "incredible pride" in Inuit culture in Gjoa Haven to accompany the "incredible body of knowledge."

The interviews will be compiled in a book manuscript that will be available in Inuktitut, English and French. Some of the content will also be uploaded to the internet.

Interviewees were given copies of their videotaped interviews and personalized maps created through their shared knowledge of places.

"So the project continues within the families," Tarasoff said.

GN to study marine infrastructure needs Aggu MLA says review is unnecessary; Hall Beach mayor still waiting for breakwater

Nunavut communities waiting for marine infrastructure are going to have to wait some more.

The federal government has made $2.2 million available for the Government of Nunavut to undertake a study of community needs this year, Economic Development Minister David Akeeagok announced in the legislative assembly in late February.

"This work will set the stage for future marine infrastructure projects, such as the creation or expansion of breakwaters, dedicated laydown areas, ramps, secure fencing, lighting and small craft launching and unloading zones," Akeeagok said.

Aggu MLA Paul Quassa expressed exasperation that the GN hasn't already prioritized marine infrastructure across the territory.

"I think we all know, for those of us who live in the communities, that there doesn't really need to be a detailed study done," said Quassa. "We know what the community needs and what has to be done with regard to marine infrastructure."

Akeeagok acknowledged that some communities already have a marine infrastructure needs plan, "but some of them are kind of old, so we will update them."

He added that recent soil erosion along the coastline is another factor to be considered.

"We have to look at the depth of the ocean,

the bedrock and so on in order to build proper infrastructure," the minister said.

Quassa replied that there's a known need for a breakwater in Hall Beach.

"I just want to see some tangible assets being built in the communities," he said.

Hall Beach Mayor Jaypetee Audlakiak can attest to the urgency for a barrier to prevent pounding Arctic waters from damaging local boats and other equipment that hunters leave on shore.

"We'll be just waiting for the time when they could start that breakwater," the mayor said.

"We've been bringing that item up every year."

Originally from Qikiqtarjuaq, Audlakiak said he's seen the difference a breakwater has made in that community. He added that he'll be attending a mayors' conference in a few weeks and he plans to raise the issue once again.

Akeeagok also announced $2.5 million will be used from the federal Oceans Protection Plan to install 70-tonne mooring posts to support fuel resupply in Arviat, Gjoa Haven, Pangnirtung, Sanikiluaq and Taloyoak.

The major marine infrastructure projects on the books for the GN last year were construction of a $72-million deep-sea port and improvements to the small-craft harbour in Iqauit – which included a fixed wharf and almost 10 acres of area for loading and unloading cargo – as well as a small-craft harbour in Pond Inlet that carried an estimated price tag of $33 million.

It's not always easy to draw a line between wants and needs.

Education Minister David Joanasie has heard both during the last couple sittings of the legislative assembly.

MLAs representing Kugluktuk and Taloyoak made pitches for new schools in their communities.

In Coral Harbour, the chair of the district education authority would much prefer a new building instead of renovating the existing 1979built Sakku School.

We know, of course, new schools come at a very high cost.

Cape Dorset's replacement Peter Pitseolak High School, with its many modern amenities, opened last year. It has earned high praise in the community.

Iglulik is also the site of a new high school, but it's not yet accessible due to a dispute between the GN and the contractor over flooring. Construction is underway in Kugaaruk, too.

Two of those new educational facilities – in Cape Dorset and Kugaaruk – are necessary due to catastrophic fires. In total, the three new schools represent more than $100 million. The GN doesn't have that kind of money to throw around regularly.

Joanasie explained to his colleagues that, despite some schools now ranging between 40 and 50

Following in line with last week's issue in trying to find the true definition of social justice, all parties involved need to come to terms with this matter. This is not a stand-alone subject matter.

Anything and everything we talk about, work in or think of is relative to something else.

I mentioned this in our health and well-being where if you are anxious, you have headaches, if you are afraid you have stomach aches, if you are angry you have muscle spasms and the list is enormous. All our engagements require an action followed by a reaction for any movement forward positive or negative.

We forget so quickly that people who achieve a position of responsibility have the power and ability to create policies and regulations in the best interest of those they represent. We still cannot shake the strong hand of colonialism and continue to be suppressed into submission of remaining in status quo.

I tire of the remark, "It is what it is" when in fact that can be changed to, "we can overcome through positive partnerships."

I had an interesting conversation the other day in a social matter that affects us all and is

not a stand-alone situation.

Part of the social justice scheme deals with a segment of our basic needs and that is housing.

I mentioned in this conversation that housing was not just a structure but was relative to everything else in our daily existence.

Housing affects education, child rearing, building relationships, strengthening these relationships between spouse and children and grandchildren but not at the price of over-crowding and effectively choking the will to exist in harmony and comfort.

In addressing social justice many entities are involved and have to be worked out simultaneously.

If a family is struggling with a lack of food, people pull together and bring over a box of basics, the HTO organizes their membership and have a harvesting drive in bringing in fish or caribou or musk-oxen and so on.

This is a small section of meeting social justice head on. If a family has lost a loved one the community pitches in with visits, food and words of comfort.

If there is a negative situation with parents and children where the child or children are at

risk, safe homes are identified and a brief time of separation with counselling takes place until resolution is found through programs and then reconciliation allows the return and re-uniting of the family unit in a more positive atmosphere.

I look back to when I worked underground and how my peripheral vision was really limited because of the way the drifts (roadways) are built and was referred to as tunnel vision and is still that way with our current mining sites.

This has worked its way into our corporate world and the vision that once was in the best interest of our people in need – once held a heart-felt attitude – has been reduced to tunnel vision because of time constraints, lack of funding, poor management tactics, lack of or no empathy. I could go on, but I think you see where I'm going with this.

We can all exercise social justice even though it may not be noticed, but I think in this manner it will be true social justice.

Passing of Sonya Qaumayuq Allurut READERS Write From: Mishak Allurut Dear Editor: On Mach 1, 2019 at around 1:47 a.m. in Arctic Bay, Nunavut, Sonya Qaumayuq Allurut passed on after slipping and hitting her head.

Sonya was full of energy although suffering from a liver disease all her life and having to travel to Ottawa for treatment every year. Sonya was known to many people in the 13 years she lived.

We want to thank everyone whom helped her and knew her, as well as Health Staff both in Nunavut and in Ottawa for always being willing to help Sonya.

Iqaluit RCMP and students at Aqsarniit Ilinniarvik worked together on a Beer and Wine Store paper bag project to help promote safe and responsible driving habits. Students created 320 bags to be provided to the Beer and Wine Store for its customers.

Renewed efforts to open fish plant

Iglulik The Igloolik Hunters and Trappers Association (HTA) is hopeful that a long-desired fish plant will become operational by fall, after sealift arrives with filleting equipment, said HTA manager Jacob Malliki.

"We're hoping to have it running soon," he said.

The plan is to sell Arctic char fillets and dry fish within the community, said Malliki, who noted that Iglulik has close to 100,000 pounds of existing commercial fishing quota annually.

In future years, the idea is to sell the fish in the south, he said, adding that a licence would have to be obtained first.

The community freezer has an adjoining space that can be used for processing the char. The number of jobs that would be created through the venture hasn't yet been determined, according to Malliki.

Opportunity open for one Nunavut youth

Nunavut The Ayalik Fund is helping spread the word about a small university which may have a spot for one student from Nunavut.

"The Ayalik Fund has been approached by a donor in the US, offering to assist a suitable candidate from Nunavut to gain admission and access to scholarship funding at a very fine, small, private, liberal arts university in the United States," stated the fund's co-founder David Pelly.

Pelly and his wife Laurie established the Ayalik Fund in 2015 in honour of their son Eric Ayalik Okalitana Pelly. Thanks to approximately $100,000 in donations each year, 20 or more Nunavut youth participate in confidence-building programs, such as Tall Ships Expedition Canada and Outward Bound among others.

St. Lawrence University is located in Canton, New York, just across the border into the US, a 90-minute drive south of Ottawa.

The university's approach may suit students making the transition from the far North, explained Pelly.

From the university: "[the] first-year program is one of the oldest living-learning programs in the country, helping students make successful transitions from high school to college, intellectually and socially. Students live together and study in a teamtaught first-year program, developing the writing, speaking and research skills needed for college."

The student body is roughly 2,500 in total, much smaller than most universities‚ split almost equally between young men and women, including representation from more than 50 different countries, with international students comprising approximately 15 per cent of the student population, adds Pelly.

"In short, it is a diverse environment," he said, adding the school's sports programming rivals its academic programming.

"The application process begins every fall, for entry to studies at St. Lawrence the following year. This is not a typical activity for the Ayalik Fund, but we will be happy to facilitate appropriate connections," said Pelly.

Seeking funds for country foods

Gjoa Haven The Gjoa Haven Hunters and Trappers Association (HTA) is hoping to track down spare year-end funding from the Department of Economic Development to support the purchase of more country foods.

The HTA had financial support to purchase Arctic char, white fish, caribou and muskox and distribute it over the past several months but that money has run out, said Enuk Pauloosie, manager of the HTA. "There's a lot of families with no hunting equipment, ladies with no husbands or no way of hunting – we provide country food for those people, pretty much everybody in the whole community who eats country food, if we have it (to give away)," Pauloosie said. "It helps a lot of people. It's a good program to have ... I prefer eating country food."

Depending on the amount of funding available, there could also be assistance available to help harvesters acquire hunting equipment, Pauloosie added.

He said he's hoping to hear back on this latest funding application by the end of the month or in April.

Past meets present

Iqaluit The Unikkaarvik Visitor Centre is hosting an unusual literary event April 17.

"My project involves returning to ten cities that have had a formative impact on my life. In each of those cities I revisit ten sites that have personal significance," stated Wayne Johnston, a librarian at University of Guelph in Ontario.

"In those sites I do writing about past and present experience, inviting the past to engage with and inform the present experience. I also do a drawing in each site. Finally, I present my work in a public performance in each of those ten cities."

Johnston has staged similar events under the umbrella title Ten Cities: The Past Is Present in: Accra, Ghana; Geneva, Switzerland; Kathmandu, Nepal; London, Toronto and Ottawa, Ontario; Manhattan, United States; and Zagreb, Croatia.

Johnston says he was in Iqaluit numerous times between 1997 and 2001.

"I was working for the Nunavut Wildlife Management Board, developing a wildlife management resource centre that was also meant to serve the needs of the Department of Fisheries and Oceans, Nunavut Arctic College and, of course, the Inuit hunters and fishers," he said.

"It was part of fulfilling the terms of the Nunavut Agreement."

Aaron Watson, coordinator at the Unikkaarvik says the centre is always happy to host visitors with an experience and performance and story to share.

"Wayne Johnston has travelled around the world, creating art and writing about his experiences. Unikkaarvik hosts a variety of events year-round and, while most are focused on Nunavut and Inuit culture, events like Ten Cities add variety and a different perspective to our presentations. We look forward to seeing Wayne's reflections on our city," Watson said.

After-school recreation and maybe orienteering

Resolute Recreation coordinator Mark Amarualik has almost four months on the job and he usually sees 10 or more students per day show up for after-school recreation programs, he said.

The youth come to the gym for soccer, volleyball, scooter hockey (like sledge hockey) and arts and crafts from 3:30 p.m. to as late as 5 p.m. The activities will continue until the school year wraps up, Amarualik said.

He's also giving thought to starting an orienteering group.

"I've just got to find a few more maps of the community ... it's hands-on GPS and compass reading on maps," he said of orienteering, adding that a few people have mentioned the possibility of geocaching, which entails searching for a hidden object.

"That would be pretty interesting because we've got nice, flat tundra over here," said Amarualik.

Ilinniapaa Campus thanked for donation

Iqaluit Aqsarniit Ilinniarvik principal Brian Manning is grateful for a gift from Helen Roos of the Ilinniapaa Campus.

"It was comprised of five e-readers with five $25 cards to download the Kobo app to read anytime, anywhere, on any device," said Manning.

"We are pleased to be gifted such a generous donation. This gift of literacy helps enhance the love of reading."

But the giving doesn't stop there.

"We also would like to thank (Roos) for sponsoring our Grade 8 Class for the Food Safe Level 1 course that teacher Kelli McLarty's Grade 8 Class recently completed," said Manning.

"With this certification we are hoping our students can take away more knowledge and certification in the food industry."

Roos is the president and lead instructor of the Ilinniapaa Skills and Development Center in Iqaluit Nunavut, which delivers pre-employment and professional training and development services.

Main worries about youth social media use

Are mental health workers in Nunavut aware of the harmful effects of excessive social-media use by youth?

This is the question posed by Arviat North-Whale Cove MLA John Main in a member's statement and in questions to Health Minister George Hickes in the legislative assembly March 4.

"There is a developing body of research on the link between mental health issues and socialmedia use and I should add that there are some positive benefits to social-media use that have been backed up by research, but specifically I am talking about excessive use of social media and particularly among young people," said Main to John Hickes.

Main Main had previously told the assembly he was becoming disconcerted.

"Apparently, when they need to constantly check their status that means internet addiction, with more researchers finding out the negative effects of this medium and this is especially concerning for young people here in Nunavut as they already face mental health challenges and in light of the internet becoming widely available in Nunavut."

Main likened the internet addiction with addiction to cigarettes. He also said elders are noticing.

"Many elders are starting to complain that many of the youth are not interested in talking with them anymore. They are all hunched in front of their small screens and locked in their own world," he said.

Hickes said, as a father of two teenaged girls, he is aware of how screen time is encroaching on time spent outdoors and active. Main wanted to know if Health has evidence of a trend relating mental health and excessive social-media use in Nunavut youth. Hickes did not specifically address social-media use in his reply. He did say there is a trend of people accessing more services.

"People being more cognizant and reducing that stigma of approaching health care professionals, mental health workers, to communicate more openly with their friends and family," Hickes said, adding he'd be seeking supplementary

funding for this budget line.

"With regard to social media itself, we all are becoming more and more involved and seeing more and more instances of how social media can be a good thing, like the member says, but it can also create challenges for our youth."

Noting the British health department is producing guidelines on the maximum amount of time young people should spend on social media, Main suggested that if Nunavut parents and youth had access to similar GN-created guidelines they could better understand how usage affects mental health. Main sought a commitment from Hickes for such guidelines.

Hickes said there are national resources, such as mediasmarts. ca, which has tips for managing screen time.

Local educators needed

Inuit in communities should be encouraged and supported to teach in schools, Kugluktuk MLA Mila Adjukak Kamingoak said March 5.

"The minister (of Education) has indicated that his department will be implementing a new educator recruitment strategy to address teacher shortages and to support Inuit employment targets. Can the minister clarify whether his recruitment strategy includes employing Inuit from our communities who may not be certified teachers, but who are perfectly capable of teaching in our schools?" asked Kamingoak.

Education Minister David Joanasie replied in the affirmative, saying targeting Inuit for hiring as substitute teachers has potential.

"In addition to that, we want to increase the number of opportunities that our current language specialists, specifically and Inuit teachers and/or employees have in potentially laddering into obtaining professional qualifications to become fully qualified," he said.

Joanasie also indicated the department wants to hire more bilingual teachers, but pointed out that not everyone who speaks the Inuit language can necessarily teach.

"It's a specialized skill to be able to teach in the language," he said.

Kamingoak suggested that Joanasie should make more use of letters of authority. This tool, she noted, enables the GN to hire individuals into positions even though they do not hold the formal

Concerns about healthcare staff housing

With Sanikiluaq's new health centre scheduled for completion in about 18 months, Hudson Bay MLA Allan Rumbolt sought assurance from Health Minister George Hickes.

Hickes said there were complications. He explained that when new staff housing is built in a community it is considered Nunavut Housing Corporation staff-housing stock.

"We can't confirm that they would be intended for the health centre staff," said Hickes.

"Right now we're still in discussions on how and where we're going to locate those units, but in the meantime we do have a plan in place to continue to utilize the residential units in the current Allan Rumbolt health centre."

Rumbolt was not satisfied that the five-plex was a go, saying a letter he received in the fall indicated otherwise. He stressed the need for housing to be close to the centre. Rumbolt brought to the minister's attention an incident in another community.

"Staff housing was built right next to the health centre, there was a lack of understanding between the Department of Health and the Nunavut Housing Corporation and the units were allocated to other government workers."

Hickes admitted that situation had been a "learning experience."

"My intention is to have any new residence built beside the health centre allocated to health centre staff," Hickes said.

Rankin Inlet gymnasts work doggedly at fundraising as World Gymnaestrada looms closer

The founder and head coach of the Aqsarniit Ujauttaq (Northern Lights) gymnastics club in Rankin Inlet, Lisa Kresky, left for the Canada Winter Games with a lot on her mind last month.

Kresky attended the games as part of the Women in Coaching program and is linked with the B.C. gymnastics team as an apprentice coach.

With the Games over, Kresky now has to turn all her attention on getting her competitive team from the club to represent Canada at the 2019 international World Gymnaestrada in Dornbirn, Austria, from July 7 to 13.

More than 70 countries are expected to take

part in the World Gymnaestrada, with more than 20,000 participants.

Rankin's 22 gymnasts and three coaches would be part of the 600-member Team Canada entourage at the event.

Kresky said her young gymnasts were beyond excited when they received their Team Canada uniform this past month.

She said the Rankin athletes have been counting down the days to the World Gymnaestrada since well before this past Christmas.

"The uniforms kind of made everything feel a bit more realistic and reminded the girls that time is ticking," said Kresky.

"We're looking at it being just over 130 days away now, so the girls are getting even more excited, if that's even possible."

Iqaluit Taekwondo Society down under

Melbourne, Australia The inaugural Chan Hun International Taekwon-do Federation World Championships wrapped up in Melbourne, Australia on March 10 and the Iqaluit Taekwondo Society was right in the thick of it.

The society had eight of its members make the trip for the

talented young gymnasts from Rankin Inlet having their hearts set on being part of Team Canada at World Gymnaestrada – one big hurdle remains and, as almost always in the North.

That one big hurdle is money.

The gymnastics club's competitive team has attended a number of premier events during the past two years to earn the right to travel to Austria and represent Canada.

Those events cost a lot to attend, as well and as hard as the athletes and coaches have worked fundraising, they're still $60,000 away from their final goal and the clock is, indeed, ticking.

Kresky said she, the girls and their parents remain hopeful and optimistic that they'll get past their final barrier and they all continue to work hard at fundraising.

She said there's still a ways to go and nobody

Rough ride on the ice

Brandon, Man. Team Nunavut's time at the Tim Hortons Brier was a short one again as the rink skipped by former Iqaluit resident David St. Louis missed out on the championship round of this year's event.

St. Louis and his rink of Peter Mackey, Jeff Nadeau and Lloyd Kendall out of the Iqaluit Curling Club lost all seven of their games in pool play in Brandon, Man. Their final game was against Team Canada, skipped by

"We're going to find a way to raise that total remaining, so we're working hard and keeping our eyes on the final goal.

"We had another bake sale this past weekend, we have raffles coming up and we continue to put letters out to businesses and organizations trying to attract sponsorships and that type of thing.

"It's really tough fundraising in Rankin Inlet right now with so many other teams and organizations also trying to fundraise – with everyone trying to do so much fundraising it's really tapping out the resources within the community, but we just refuse to give up and I still believe we'll get there."

Big turnout for tournament

Kangiqliniq/Rankin Inlet The Terence Tootoo Memorial senior men's hockey tournament was the latest big event in Rankin Inlet and it all wrapped up on March 10.

Everything began on March 6 with the round-robin, which featured 12 teams from Iglulik, Baker Lake, Arviat (two teams), Coral Harbour, Whale Cove, Naujaat, Chesterfield Inlet and four from the host community, including the Kivalliq Canucks junior squad. The 12 teams were split into two divisions with each division having its own championship game.

The round-robin finished up on March 9 with the playoffs beginning on March 10 and the title contests for the A and B divisions later in the evening.

Andy Nowicki has made it his job to travel to small communities and teach hockey.

The former goaltending coach for the Los Angeles Kings was in Arctic Bay last month to be the guest coach for a hockey camp.

He was helped out by several members of the community, including Tagonark Willie, Curtis Willie, Roger Taqtu, Matthew Akikulu, Roxanne Kigutaq and Thomas Levi, Arctic Bay's recreation co-ordinator.

Levi said Nowicki also hosted a coaching clinic in between on-ice sessions.

I don't know if this is trolling or not but someone just came to the realization that Netflix just didn't pull its name out of thin air.

Emmy Bengtson, who identifies herself as a communications staffer for U.S. senator Kirsten Gillibrand, tweeted out something which defied logic on March 5. She finally has Netflix figured out – you see, it's a compound word of sorts with Net representing the Internet and Flix being the hip, happening word for flicks. If this is true, Netflix has some ‘splainin to do about confusing poor Ms. Bengtson for so long.

Now that we've solved that problem, let's move on to something equally as stunning:

Doping in bridge?

Ladies and gentlemen, I present to you a true doping scandal that will blow your minds.

The World Bridge Federation (WBF) has been rocked with the positive drug test of one of its top players. His name is Geir Helgemo, the WBF's no. 1-ranked player from Monaco and he has been given a retroactive one-year ban after a pee test found two substances which have been outlawed by the World AntiDoping Agency: synthetic testosterone and clomiphene.

Being the cynical person that I am, I had to go and look up what this does to help with playing a card game. Here's what I found: Testosterone helps to build lean muscle mass which can help in physical strength, speed and explosiveness on the playing field. At first glance, I don't see how that can help in a card game unless you're in a timed contest and have less than three seconds to make a move or you simply want to go all Larry Bird and crap-talk someone while slamming down a card to win a trick (that's what a winning hand is called in bridge).

The clomiphene finding boggles my synapses. If you've never heard of the drug, that's OK because I will enlighten you. Climophene is a fertility drug which helps women get pregnant. Biological men don't have a uterus nor do they have Fallopian tubes so why would Helgemo have taken it? He might have done so to alter his testosterone levels as

minutes so an average of one every three or four seconds isn't horrible.

Besides, Meier has a long way to go to beat Mark Scheifele and his 90-second spot with TSN during the 2012 World Junior Hockey Championship. In that short interview, Scheifele said "you know" 36 times.

You can complain all you want but in my line of work, hockey players are always willing to talk on the record and I love them for it, cliches and all.
