Emergency crews were unable to stop a home on Tundra Ridge in Iqaluit from burning down to its pilings Friday afternoon. RCMP on the scene said no one was injured. It was the second home destroyed by fire in the capital in less than 24 hours.

Cambridge mom gives birth to 'awesome' and 'amazing' triplets Five siblings awaiting homecoming of three newborn brothers still in Edmonton hospital

Cambridge Bay's population grew by three on Feb. 10.

The three new citizens arrived at 9:27 p.m., 9:28 p.m.

And 9:29 p.m.

But, because Chester Jr., Chase and Mackail Arqviq were born seven weeks early, they remain at the Royal Alexandra Hospital in Edmonton.

"We're taking it day by day," said mom Roseanne Kaiyogana, adding that it could be a couple of months before the boys are able to fly home. "All I can say is we've made it this far and we are on the road to recovery."

Kaiyogana only found out she was carrying triplets in October, during an ultrasound.

"We saw two babies then we moved over and found the third baby," she recalled. "I thought (the ultrasound technician) was playing a joke on me.

"It was shocking to my hometown where I was born

and raised, too. The news of me having triplets was amazing. I got a lot of congrats and I was told I am blessed."

She knows it's something special.

"I'm blessed to have triplets who will keep us busy.

It's rare – once in a million," she said. "I never imagined having this many children in my life; never imagined even having triplets in my life."

Father Chester Arqviq has twins in his extended family and he was hopeful he would have a matching pair as well, but he got one more than he bargained for.

"Awesome," Kaiyogana said of their luck.

It's too soon to tell her identical triplets apart based on their looks. They're just too similar. But they're already developing some distinct personality traits, said Kaiyogana.

"Chester Jr. and Chase both love their soothers.

Chase loves to hear soft voices," she said.

Waiting to meet their new siblings are Natalie, Trentin,

Jenny, Keatin and Chasity, ranging in age from 17 to two.

Chasity, no longer the youngest, "is so curious" about the triplets, according to Kaiyogana.

"She knew I was having more than two babies. She'd ask about her baby brothers when they were in my tummy," said the mom of eight children.

Also eager to meet their new grandchildren are grandparents Mike Kaiyogana and Mona Kaosoni of Cambridge Bay and David Porter and Lena Arqviq of Gjoa Haven.

Kaiyogana has plenty of support from her family. Her mom, Mona, joined her in Edmonton to help look after the triplets.

"I admire her a lot," she said of her mother.

With so many youngsters to look after, she admitted that some donations from the community would be welcome as well. Diapers, formula and baby wipes for the triplets would be helpful, Kaiyogana acknowledged.

Trauma and treatment targeted for funding Northern News Services

The Government of Nunavut's proposed budget for 20192020 includes $4.6 million earmarked for implementation of in-territory trauma and addictions treatment, based on a detailed three-pillar plan released last year.

The five-year plan projects pillar one – enhanced community services and on-the-land healing camps – would require $767,280 for start-up costs and $3,594,623 for 2019-2020.

"We want to build on the success of the Cambridge Bay

wellness program, their on-the-land program and bring it into the three regions," said Finance and Health Minister George Hickes.

Pillar two – a centre in the capital – will require federal funding and that's something Hickes says the GN and NTI have been working on together. The plan estimates $55,186,175 in start-up costs for a centre and annual operating costs of $10,664,126.

Hickes also notes the "fantastic job" Clyde River's Ilisaqsivik has done producing Inuktut-speaking counsellors.

"We might have to look at enhancing that program and taking it to another level to bring in substantial numbers," said Hickes.

According to the plan, pillar three has a price tag of $1.2 million per year to fund a degree program at Nunavut Arctic College (NAC).

Hickes says in-territory, community-based healing will be a game-changer.

Hickes' budget aims to do more with less NTI calls budget just more of the same, demands Education Act implementation

Finance Minister George Hickes began his budget address Feb. 20 with a look back at Nunavut's 20 years, listing numbers such as a 40 per cent population increase, a doubled economy and a GDP which has grown five per cent each year since 1999.

"The story of Nunavut is a story of growth," said Hickes.

"Everywhere you look, we're doing more. At the same time, our challenges remain.

"Nunavummiut must deal with a housing shortage, high living costs and a wage economy that increasingly demands new skills and technical knowledge."

Yet, according to the 20192020 budget, public housing will see a paltry 100 new units built this year, down from 190 in previous years. After noting the Conference Board of Canada forecasts strong economic growth for several years, Hickes described a budget on its way to being balanced; however, he made it clear that Nunavut's needs are outpacing its ability to pay for those services.

"Each year we are doing more with less," said Hickes, prior to breaking down the budget along the lines of Turaaqtavut, the mandate for the territory's fifth government.

But, while Hickes called the budget a sensible approach, Nunavut Tunngavik Inc. (NTI) president Aluki Kotierk was disappointed, expecting more.

"For the most part, everything was pretty much the

same. I expected to see more money for the Education Act, for the implementation of the Education Act. There was nothing that I saw," said Kotierk from Rankin Inlet.

Kotierk refers to the right of Inuit children to have an Inuktut education.

"And we've been advocating for more resources to be put into Inuktut, proactively addressing the need for Inuktutspeaking teachers. I would have thought there was an opportunity to do that. That's missed," she said.

However, Kotierk applauded Hickes, who is learning Inuktitut, for speaking the language in the assembly.

"I think that's so important and I think we need to nurture that space of encouragement, of encouraging fellow Inuit to speak more Inuktut," said Kotierk.

Looking to the $1 million dedicated to translation, Kotierk makes the point that most often translation at the Government of Nunavut means translating from English to Inuktut, which is backwards.

Kotierk was also confused

by Hickes calling Nunavut's governance model self-government. Hickes said, "Turaaqtavut ... sets out the ideas that will take us forward into our 20th year of self-government and well beyond."

"The territorial public government is not self-government," said Kotierk.

On a less disappointed note, she applauded the money earmarked for addictions and trauma treatment.

By the numbers: budget highlights A smaller deficit and new money to health and wellness initiatives – these are the highlights proposed by Hickes.

Hickes projects total spending at $2.166 billion, as compared to $2.201 billion last year and total revenues at $2.162 billion, as compared to $2.177 billion last year. Federal transfers are up, at $1.738 billion, while last year that number was $1.671 billion.

The government, as usual, is earmarking $30 million for contingencies.

Hickes noted that, as it

stands, revenues are set to rise more slowly than the cost of providing public services.

"This compels us to take very firm action on cost control while, at the same time, raising new revenue through economic growth," he said.

Proposed new spending is as follows: • $4.6 million in new funding for the treatment of addictions and related trauma – see page 6.

• $2.8 million towards law enforcement – Justice Dept. officials said this funding is mainly for new housing for RCMP person-

nel outside Iqaluit.

• $2.7 million to expand the Medical Travel program.

• $2.0 million to strengthen emergency shelters, set up transitional housing for women and improve emergency services for women and children. Officials from the Dept. of Family Services explained that $1 million will top up societies who manage emergency shelters, for capacity and programming. Officials also said some of that money will go to a newlycreated position within the department: a transitional

housing coordinator. A total of $800,000 will support family violence initiatives, while the Qulliit Nunavut Status of Women Council receives $120,000.

• $1.6 million to support Team Nunavut's participation in the 2020 Arctic Winter Games • $0.7 million to create more clinical positions in communities for the screening and testing of tuberculosis.

• $0.6 million in new funding for the Qikiqtani General Hospital to support improved services and plan for a pediatric unit.

The fast pace of life Northern News Services

The first month of this new year has come and gone like a stiff west wind, fast and furious and already the second, too, is almost done. It makes you want to stop and look at where you ended up.

We find that we forget very quickly what we had set out to do: keeping in touch with loved ones, more visits, more engagements and keeping all these commitments puts a strain on us. What should I do?

In the workplace, the supervisor who is in touch with his/her subordinates will often touch base to see how projects are moving along. My editor will not mind my saying so, but an email will be sent asking if I have an item for the next edition and nine times out of 10 I didn't prepare or got distracted and you can see the multiple excuses that will come up.

As the scope of work unfolds, we begin to learn how to prioritize and to put matters in some kind of order. We still may overlook or forget something along the way, but that just shows you how much you actually have on your plate.

The personal engagements we have commit-

ted to are crucial in being met for any success and forward movement to happen. People are expecting that friendly phone call, they expect you for tea on Thursday afternoon and they need pick-up for Friday's shopping and so on. As we continue in this mode of giving and caring, we begin to see that self-improvement has taken place. As we do these various tasks, we find we are doing this with a smile; we put ourselves aside for others.

Our precious little ones begin to see and recognize a pattern in the busy activities of home life. As they grow from infancy to toddlerhood to school age, things are going on. A sense of responsible behaviour is being explained and light duties are given: help your little brother/sister get dressed, hold his/her hand as you're walking to school, watch out for trucks and Ski-Doos and Hondas and so on.

If any of these duties are overlooked or forgotten, what happens? There is yelling and blaming and pointing fingers at whomever. Perhaps we should have stopped to see why matters were forgotten or overlooked?

As a parent or parents, maybe we should have

kept a closer eye on the situation. Maybe part of the circumstance is because we slept in as a result of a long night. We could have stopped and left the card game earlier, we could have made sure the clothing was folded or lined up for quick access. The list makes you want to stop and see how or why.

In my view, as adults, we learned a lot of the lessons mentioned as we were growing up and I think all we want to do is pass these on.

Remember to do this with patience, understanding and knowing that the little ones are really trying hard. Be careful in projecting your woes on them, be careful and not blame them for what you should have done in preparation.

This is where, too, the planning and getting ready for the next trip or visit or outing has the little ones involved and included with their input.

Having the sense of inclusion builds confidence and the willingness to be involved spontaneously.

Teachers take coding to schools

Qikiqtaaluk Nunavut teachers gathered in Iqaluit this past week to tend to their own learning. A myriad of professional development opportunities were on the agenda and, in one classroom at Inuksuk High School, coding was the name of the game.

About a dozen teachers gathered to learn some coding concepts and exercises to take back to their classrooms.

"We're here today to really give teachers a sense of the scope and sequence of computational thinking and what it looks like in the classroom, how you deal with all the stumbling blocks as a teacher," said chief knowledge officer with Kids Code Jeunesse Juliet Waters, who was teaching the teachers along with Matthew Griffin.

The biggest stumbling block, said Waters, is that teachers are learning the material alongside their students.

"How do you do that as a teacher and not get intimidated by something your students may actually know better. A lot of it is not just learning code. It's the psychology of teaching, the psychology of being vulnerable as a teacher," she said.

Moving Forward Together winds down

Kugluktuk After five years of creating and supporting a variety of programming, Moving Forward Together (MFT) is approaching its last month of operation due to expiring funding.

The Hamlet of Kugluktuk launched the initiative with financial backing from Public Safety Canada in Ottawa.

Some of the existing programs under MFT have already been transferred to other organizations. For example, the teen boys' and girls' groups, which focus on social, emotional, cultural and practical skills, will carry on through the Government of Nunavut, said Stephanie Fummerton, MFT program counsellor.

The healthy relationship course offered at Kugluktuk High School will proceed with mental health outreach workers overseeing it, she added.

There were many other MFT events and activities over the past half-decade, including carving programs, kakivak-making, on-the-land trips and film-making courses.

"Unfortunately those programs take a lot of money ... MFT was such as well-funded program," Fummerton said.

Preparing CubeSat for space

Nunavut Nunavut Arctic College (NAC) is taking part in an exciting Canadian Space Agency program, thanks to a partnership with Western University in London, Ont.

As part of the CubeSat Program, the college will help design, build and launch a CubeSat – a small satellite in the shape of a 10 cm × 10 cm × 10 cm cube.

As senior instructor for the Environmental Technology Program Jason Carpenter explains, the project leads from Western – Gordon Osinski, Jayshri Sabarinathan, Matthew Cross – are in Iqaluit to meet college learners, staff and teachers attending the teacher's conference, as well as the public to brainstorm a number of ideas.

First, the satellite needs a name. Osinski, Sabarinathan and Cross will discuss this with the college's Inuit Studies and Nunavut Teacher Education Program.

"The partnership is technically between NAC and Western, but the naming competition and any other ideas can come from anyone from Nunavut," said Carpenter.

The team will also be looking for symbols and designs that may be etched onto the satellite – these ideas will come from the Inuit Studies and Jewellery and Metal Work programs.

"But again, everyone is welcome to put forward suggestions," Carpenter said.

The team is also looking at what CubeSat components could be

manufactured here in Nunavut.

A place for time and passion

Qikiqtaaluk The Qikiqtani Inuit Association (QIA) needs people to fill several board and committee positions.

"To be considered, candidates must be actively and personally committed to represent the interest of Qikiqtani Inuit and have a sound understanding of the Nunavut Agreement as it relates to the roles and mandates of the position," states QIA. There are three-year terms open at the Inuit Heritage Trust, Kakivak Grants and Loans Appeals Committee, the Nunavut Impact Review Board and a one-year term on the Nunavut Disabilities Council.

There are also positions available with the following committees: Iqaluit/Qaumarviit Joint Parks Management Committee, Sanikiluaq Joint Parks Planning Committee and Auyuittuq Parks Planning Team.

Pre-trades training

Iglulik Three months of pre-trades training is taking place in Iglulik. Electrical, carpentry and oil-burner mechanic lessons will be included.

"This is just in case they're interested in taking an apprenticeship in it," said senior administrative officer Greg Morash. "(The hamlet) is going to let them work on some of our buildings ... maybe we've got a few electrical problems and (the instructor) can show them how to replace a breaker and work on our boilers to a certain extent."

The Kakivak Association is sponsoring the training, which is aimed at young adults. The dozen participants have been equipped with safety gear, said Morash.

Learning the basics of business

Kugaaruk A business planning workshop is scheduled for March 1 to 4.

"The intent of this is to teach local people the importance of having a business plan and also figuring out if their business (proposal) would be plausible," said Alex Ittimangnaq, Kugaaruk's economic development officer. "It's open to anyone who's interested."

The workshop will take place at the hamlet office over a weekend because it will allow people who are currently employed to be present, Ittimangnaq noted, adding that there's no cost to attend.

"I think we're moving in the right direction," he said. "We want to develop the skills of local people here and get our foot in the door, so to speak."

Hal Timar, former executive director of the Baffin Regional Chamber of Commerce, will lead the workshop.

High hopes for commercial fishery HTA chair excited over prospect of Arctic char processing plant in Gjoa Haven

As a test fishery in Gjoa Haven approaches its fifth and final year, James Qitsualik is envisioning a commercial enterprise for Arctic char that could surpass the operation at Kitikmeot Foods in Cambridge Bay. "The abundance of char is incredible," said Qitsualik, chair of the Gjoa Haven Hunters and Trappers Association, who added that whitefish stocks are also ample. "We know the fish are there. It's just a matter of time, of waiting and getting the exact numbers, starting it up and being able to maintain commercial fisheries ... If everything goes according to plan, hopefully we can start a fish plant here in town."

Such a venture would provide an economic boost to the community, Qitsualik said.

"We're so limited for resources and employment up here so anything we can create is a plus. We're always pushing to find anything we can possibly do to create employment, even if it's seasonal employment," he said.

The community already has a standing commercial quota of 23,700 kg for Arctic char and 1,000 kg for whitefish, but Qitsualik said he hopes to see that increased.

"Our old quotas are like 20 years old. They need to be updated," he said. "Those test fisheries will prove the numbers we were saying. I'm expecting an increase in quotas in all our commercial fishing lakes."

Although the Department of Fisheries and Oceans (DFO) isn't a part-

ner in the project, it is acting in an advisory capacity.

"If it is determined through (the) process outlined in the New Emerging Fisheries Policy that a commercial fishery is feasible and sustainable in Gjoa Haven, quotas or any other fisheries management regimes

would go through the decision-making process as outlined in the Nunavut Agreement," said DFO spokesperson Michael Niziol. "Fisheries management decisions are made in consideration of Inuit Qaujimajatuqangit and using the best available science."

Multiple phone messages left with various Nunavut Wildlife Management Board staff were not returned.

Through the Towards a Sustainable Fishery for Nunavut (TSFN) program – a partnership between communities and university researchers – Gjoa Haven harvesters have been netting 200 char from each of three test fishery sites per year.

The approximate 3,000 kilograms of fish annually has been distributed to community members. Providing healthy local foods is one of the objectives of TSFN. The program also includes a rigourous scientific component that involves the study of the health and genetics of the fish as well as contaminants in the local environment.

In addition to Gjoa Haven, the DFO has issued exploratory licences – to help determine the feasibility of commercial fisheries – in Iqaluit, Taloyoak, Cape Dorset and Qikiqtarjuaq over the past year.

Boys' hockey, speedskating and table tennis athletes compete at Canada Winter Games

It is the biggest winter sports show in Canada and Nunavut's best young athletes were there taking on the country.

The Canada Winter Games is now in week two; week one officially wrapped up on Feb. 23 and for Nunavut, that meant the boys' hockey team, speedskaters and table tennis players are all back home following their week one exploits.

The boys' hockey team was the highlight as the territory competed for the very first time on the ice and they made their mark. They lost the 11th place game to Team NT by a score of 4-2 on Feb. 21, but there's a silver living for the team that came in as the bottom seed.

They didn't finish last and that's a big deal to Martin Joy, the team's head coach.

He said even though they didn't advance

to play for a playoff spot, it doesn't feel like a failure at all.

"We won a game and that was an amazing feeling," he said. "The boys competed every game and watching them play hard has been the most rewarding feeling I've had as a head coach. They won't quit, no matter what."

That non-quitting attitude was tried over the course of the round-robin as Nunavut was saddled with the worst schedule imaginable among the 13 teams in the boys' hockey tournament: two consecutive days of two games with very little chance to rest or recuperate. In short, the boys were forced to play four games in less than 36 hours.

Joy said he tried to get the organizers to fix things so his boys could at least get some down time, to no avail.

"We did work to change it but they didn't seem too interested considering we were the 13th seed," he said. "It was actually more

It was the first main draw win in the territory's history; the territory did win a pre-qualification game in 2016 against B.C. The men will be up next as the Tim Hortons Brier takes place in Brandon, Man., starting March 2. Dave St. Louis, formerly of Iqaluit but now living in Ontario, will once again skip this year's team.

Coral Harbour wins on the road

Mariele Depeuter, Team Nunavut's chef de mission, said overall, week one was a success.

"We couldn't be prouder of the kids," she said. "Lots of compliments from volunteers about how well they behaved and how they conducted themselves. They were great ambassadors for the territory."

The other thing Depeuter noted was the number of parents and families who made the trip.

"I think it was the most parents I've ever seen come to an event like this," she said.

"People made the trip from Nunavut and all over Canada to watch and that was cool to see."

Week two will see badminton and judo as the only sports Nunavut will take part in.

The Nunavut Youth Ambassadors will also be on the ground for week two to serve as volunteers.

Bantams set to hit the ice

Kangiqliniq/Rankin Inlet The Arviat Wolves will be returning to defend their championship title when the Bantam Rock hockey championship gets underway in Rankin Inlet from March 1 to 3.

The Rankin tournament will be an excellent warm-up for the Nunavut Bantam Territorial Championship, which will be held in Arviat from March 15 to 17.

So ... let's break down week one for Team Nunavut and Team NT

Speedskating If there was a medal hope for Team NT in week one, this was it and it very nearly panned out.

Wren Acorn of Yellowknife was already known to some of the speedskating community but she put her name in lights as she managed two top-10 finishes in the girls 1,000-metre and 1,500-metre events. The boys' relay team set a new NWT record in their heats in a sport which has always been kind to the NWT. Do I hear someone whispering Michael Gilday's name? I hear you. Yes, there is talk about Acorn and international aspirations and don't think for a second people aren't beginning to compare her to Gilday in terms of her future.

Team Nunavut's time at the Canada Winter Games in Red Deer, Alta., is half done as table tennis, boys' hockey and speedskating finished up their business on Feb. 21.

The boys' hockey team ended up in 12th place after dropping the 11th place game to the NWT by a score of 4-2 while the speedskaters finished with two Iqaluit skaters – Hayden Hickey and Emma Carpenter – setting new territorial records in the 1,000-metre races on Feb. 21, just as coach Kyle St. Laurent of Iqaluit predicted they would.

The table tennis crew finished up strong as several of the team managed to play through to Wednesday in the placement round.

wrong. For Nunavut, it was a week where they looked for personal bests and they got them in spades. The 1,000-metre races was where head coach Kyle St. Laurent predicted to me that records would fall and they did. Hayden Hickey and Emma Carpenter of Iqaluit set the new territorial marks, just as St. Laurent expected they would.

Biathlon Nunavut didn't have a biathlon team but Team NT did and they didn't embarrass themselves in the slightest. Both Danika and Calista Burke of Fort Smith had great last days in the girls' 10-km individual races, finishing in the top 20. Spencer Littlefair was a model of consistency as he had three identical 30th place finishes in his three races.

Biathlon is one of the toughest sports out there. Ask Brendan Green of Hay River. He did it for years at the top level and his three Winter Olympics appearances are a testament to just how good our Northern biathletes can be.

Gymnastics Bumps, bruises, sprains – you name it. That's what you get in gymnastics.

Team NT's gymnastics team fought through a whole lot of hurt to finish strong. Emma Leathem, Jade Ko and Lindsey Woodford got to compete in the all-around and, just like the Nunavut boys' hockey team, didn't finish last. That seems to be the optimal goal of the teams that travel but it's a thing among athletes. Believe me.

Spare a thought for Nathalie Shafer, whose Canada Winter Games ended before it even began as she injured herself in the warm-up before the team competition on Feb. 17. That has to be the worst kind of injury – it's one thing to hurt yourself in competition but in warm-up? That sucks.

And so we're in week two now and it's busy-busy again.

Nunavut and Team NT both have judo and badminton with team NT also competing in cross-country skiing, curling, girls' hockey, figure skating and archery. There's a medal hope in there for Team NT somewhere. See if you can spot the sport. I've only mentioned it a few dozen times.

Project Atigi takes Inuit clothiers global I was so proud of all the seamstresses for being part of the project, says Mishael Gordon

A secret project, 14 Inuit seamstresses and a now-fashionable parka company – those are the basic elements of a revelation that wowed Nunavut, New York City and the world Jan. 31.

Iqaluit's Marlene Watson was asked to join Project Atigi, Canada Goose's "new social entrepreneurship project for Canada's North," in spring 2018, while Mishael Gordon, who lives in Iqaluit but comes from Rankin Inlet, was approached in the fall.

"I had to think about it," said Watson. "I was nervous to do this project, because I didn't know what it was really about in the beginning.

When I understood what was going to happen, I ended up really excited

to do the project with them."

Gordon says when the vision of the project was explained to her, she agreed to take part.

"They really wanted to keep the project on the down-low. They really wanted to surprise the world with our creations," said Gordon. "It was incredibly difficult. I hate being so secretive, because I was so excited about it. I just wanted to tell the world."

But she was able to tell her closest friends, husband and mother and it helped that Watson is an Apex neighbour.

For Watson, who also created Prime Minister Justin Trudeau's parka, keeping the secret was hard.

"But I had to stay quiet so I kept quiet for a long time," she said.

Canada Goose declined an inter-

view with Nunavut News; however, president and chief executive officer Dani Reiss has stated in a news release and elsewhere that Project Atigi is a "social responsibility," much like its Resource Centre Program. That program was established in 2009.

"We have proudly delivered materials to more than 10 Northern communities, donating fabric, lining, buttons, zippers and trims several times a year, with all materials transported by First Air, free of charge," according to the company's website.

Reiss stated, "Canada Goose was built in the North and we have a responsibility to be a meaningful part of the community that we call home."

In Spring 2018, Canada Goose approached Marlene Watson to be one of 14 seamstresses from across Inuit Nunangat to create a one-of-a kind design for Project Atigi.

Meanwhile, Gordon settled on a child's parka.

"They just said, 'Let your artistic seamstress shine through and do whatever you want.' I prefer to sew for men or children, because they're not as picky as most women are. They tend to be less difficult to sew for," Gordon said, laughing.

She based her design on a coat she'd worn as a child.

Both Watson and Gordon said it was clear from the beginning of their involvement their designs were protected.

"That was my number one question," said Watson. "'You're not going to duplicate my pattern or my design?' and they said, 'No, it's not going to be duplicated at all.'"

In one report about the launch in New York City Jan. 31, which Watson and Gordon attended, Reiss is quoted.

"We don't want to appropriate anyone's history or experience or heritage. It's about using our platform," he reportedly said. "What's really powerful here is that we can create a bigger demand for these products and create

opportunities for Inuit people to make these products and sell them. The dream would be to create a marketplace that's bigger than 14 jackets."

In fact, both Watson and Gordon are receiving much attention on social media and they are being contacted for orders.

Inuit Tapiriit Kanatami (ITK) president Natan Obed also attended the unveiling of Project Atigi and reportedly gave an "impassioned speech about the impact of this project."

All sales from the project pieces – each item is priced between $5,000 and $7,500 – will go to ITK to be returned to communities.

The New York City launch was a fantastic time for both seamstresses, though, unfortunately, not all 14 were able to make it.

"I wish I had met all the seamstresses," said Watson.

"But not everybody could make it to New York or here (for filming the video)," said Watson. "But even though there were only five of us, that was amazing, getting to know each other."

This past fall, Mishael Gordon joined the secret Project Atigi, Canada Goose's new social entrepreneurship project.

"It was so much fun. We had such a great time. It was a really amazing experience," said Gordon. "The whole Canada Goose crew were so good to us. They kept as much of the production under wraps from us as possible because they wanted it to be a surprise for us, as well."

"The video, the bio, the pictures, we hadn't seen any of that. It was emotional. We were so proud of each other.

I could just cry right now. I was so proud of all the seamstresses for being part of the project, because we're not just showcasing to Inuit, or Canada ... It's to the world."

Tom Cochrane impressed those who attended his two concerts and trade show founders Brenda Mercer, Charlie Lyall, Charlie Evalik, Dan Kane and Wilfred Wilcox received the Willie Laserich Memorial Corporate Citizen Award for starting the event all those years ago.
