Health Minister George Hickes says a new, detailed report on the way forward for addictions and trauma interritory treatment will not be left to collect dust as the GN and its partners are on board to make it happen. momentum behind it."

Financial support will have to come from the Government of Nunavut and also the federal government.

But, beyond finances, Hickes makes the point that community resources will need to be shored up, in terms of trained professionals who can help identify specific treatment needs for clients and ensure after-care.

"Looking at training and development dollars is going to be the critical component," he said.

Hickes has met with NTI president Aluki Kotierk and he says they have discussed Makigiaqta Inuit Training Corporation dollars. And speaking of a facility, he says when the doors open, it's important "to have a complement of staff that are from Nunavut that are ready to walk

in the door and go to work from day one."

Overall, Hickes is pleased with the NVision report.

"It's black and white. It shows us what resources we need and it helps us in our lobbying efforts.

When we do this, we're going to do it right and we've already started," he said, speaking community capacity, which he sees as a real employment opportunity across the territory.

"When it comes to when we can have a facility, I'd like to see an announcement in the upcoming federal budget in early spring (2019). Then it would at least let us know a workable timeframe from an infrastructure standpoint, but it also gives us the green light to go ahead with the training and development to build the staff capacity for the facility itself."

Shoring up Inuit youth with skills and knowledge on the land is a years-long effort

The Clyde River healing society is dedicate to providing space, resources and programming to help families and individuals find healing and develop their strengths.

"Strong culture is a key protective factor regarding addiction and suicide," said

Ilisaqsivik executive director Malcolm Ranta.

Last spring, the youth programming was once again offered thanks mostly to funding from the Movember Foundation's Canadian Mental Health Initiative, administered by the Qaujigiartiit Health Research Centre in Iqaluit.

"We see land programming as extremely important to keep culture alive and have

elders teach youth land skills, hunting, telling the weather by looking at the land and dog teaming," said Ranta.

"We also send our counsellors on the trips. They counsel youth on the land and we find it very effective and youth really respond to it positively in that environment."

Youth go out on the land for a week at a time over a sixweek period.

Substance issues cost Nunavut $96 million annually: report Department of Health expanding introductory addictions training across the territory to address issues

It's impossible to put a cost on the heartache caused by substance abuse, but efforts are being made to quantify its financial costs in Nunavut.

The figure in a report made public last week is $96 million. That would account for lost workplace productivity and healthcare – by far the two largest sums – as well as the extra burden on the criminal justice system, according to the report's authors, the Canadian Centre on Substance Use and Addiction and the University of Victoria's Canadian Institute for Substance Use Research.

Alcohol was to blame for 45 per cent of the $96 million in overall costs – based on data from 2014 – while tobacco represented 40 per cent. Cannabis and opioids each accounted for four per cent.

"The goal of this study is to provide this information as widely as possible so folks can use the data and advocate for where they need more resources or where their programs and policies should be targeted according to the findings," said Dr. Sarah Wallingford, research and policy analyst with the Canadian Centre on Substance Use and Addiction in Ottawa.

One of the greatest dispar-

ities between Nunavut and the provinces is per capita costs.

Nunavut rings in at $2,652 per person compared to the national average at $1,081.

There are three reasons for this, according to Wallingford: the higher prevalence of drinking and smoking in Nunavut; the higher costs of providing health care; and higher median wages, which makes long-and short-term disabilities associated with substance use more costly to Nunavut employers.

Other factors complicate issue The issue is further complicated in the territory by other factors, such as a lack of housing and a shortage of nutritious food, said Opal McInnis, addiction treatment specialist with the Department of Health.

"All of those issues can kind of compound with substance use issues to create more health-related and justice-related harms," McInnis said.

It's therefore advantageous for government departments to work collaboratively, she said, giving an example of devoting a Department of Health mental health nurse to Baffin Correctional Centre, a Department of Justice facility. That position is currently vacant, but there are efforts being made to fill it, McInnis acknowledged.

tions training taking place in various communities, she noted. Department of Health professionals are not only involving health staff, but also justice and corrections workers and communitybased organizations. This has already taken place in Iqaluit (19 participants), Clyde River (12) and Rankin Inlet (nine).

The focus is primarily on cannabis and alcohol and there will be further training sessions in each region, with people brought in from outlying communities, she said.

"We are viewing this training as sort of Addictions 101," said McInnis, explaining that training in stages is a necessity, because of the abundant demands on employees' time.

"Our staff are very busy addressing acute needs within the communities ... so this is just the beginning ... and how do we build on this so that people become more and more capable to address these issues."

With the exception of Resolute and Grise Fiord, which split a single position, every Nunavut community has at least one mental health nurse who can address substance-abuse problems, McInnis noted. Some have more than one.

Additionally, there are 15 community mental health and addictions workers in the territory across 10 communities.

Costs extend even further

Over-consumption of alcohol is the number one factor in $96 million in costs associated with substance use in Nunavut, according to a report released earlier this month by the Canadian Centre on Substance Use and Addiction and the University of Victoria's Canadian Institute for Substance Use Research.

On top of that, a few hamlets have additional mental health consultants and some have hired their own addictions workers, she added.

McInnis said she considers the substance use report's authors reputable, although the findings are imperfect due to information gaps in the territories.

"I trust the data, but also keep in mind the limitations related to the lack of data we have in the North," she said.

One of those data voids is the Department of Health's inability, due to a lack of resources, to monitor rates of substance abuse recovery, relapse and overall success, McInnis acknowledged.

That means reports like the one released earlier this month serve as factual baseline information, she said.

The overall substance

abuse costs in Nunavut have been rising, jumping from $68 million in 2007 to $96 million in 2014, according to the report.

Suicides and low attendance rates at school are among the repercussions of mental health and addictions issues in Gjoa Haven, according to Mayor Joanni Sallerina, who wants a dedicated facility or more mental health staff assigned to the community.

for mental health and addictions, Mayor Joanni Sallerina has twice cautioned the GN. Sallerina says suicide and low school attendance rates are among the fallout from the crisis.

"If nothing is done, these types of addictions will significantly contribute to a vicious circle of poverty for future generations as they will not be given the right environment to develop properly into good contributing citizens," Sallerina wrote in a letter to the legislative assembly that was tabled in November.

The letter was a follow-up to similar correspondence he sent in February, calling for the establishment of a Kitikmeot regional mental health and addictions facility in Gjoa Haven.

Victoria Madsen, the GN's director of mental health, said last week that the Department of Health "cannot commit to a facility in Gjoa Haven at this time."

However, she said the department is working on providing more services regionally with plans to hire additional workers before the end of the year. A second mental health nurse was stationed in Gjoa Haven in May and there are plans to add a second mental health and addictions outreach worker in the community, bringing that division's staff complement up to four in Gjoa Haven, Madsen stated.

The GN is also working on plans for an in-territory treatment facility, Madsen noted.

In the meantime, Cambridge Bay has a mental health facility available to all Kitikmeot residents, she said.

"This facility provides psycho-social support to individuals with serious mental illness. As well, the department

also partners with the Cambridge Bay Wellness Centre to provide Inuktut counselling and crisis support to the Kitikmeot communities," Madsen said, adding these services are available by contacting the wellness centre directly or through the Quality of Life Secretariat.

Sallerina said he only knows of one permanent mental health worker based in Gjoa Haven and another counsellor who flies in for a week or two every second month. Yet, he said, addictions to alcohol, marijuana, cigarettes, gambling and junk food are taking an increasing toll.

"There's more frequent incidents that are happening in our community and (those suffering from severe mental illness and addictions) have to be sent out, but they're always sent right back without really any treatment," the mayor said.

"We have a lot of people who are in need of help. We have youth that need support."

Gjoa Haven MLA Tony Akoak has repeatedly raised the issue in the legislative assembly. In May, he said the community was troubled by "serious crisis and trauma, much of it due to mental health and addictions issues."

Akoak pointed out that the Truth and Reconciliation Commission's 2015 final report urged the federal government to ensure that the funding of healing centres in Nunavut and the Northwest Territories is a priority.

In his most recent letter to the legislative assembly, Sallerina also made it clear that Ottawa should play a role in funding a mental health and addictions treatment centre due to its legalization and regulation of marijuana.

"We believe that the federal government, being one of the primary financial beneficiaries of the legalization on cannabis, will be earning billions of dollars in the years to come from cannabis sales. Such sales will

also be leaving us with the onerous task and increased cost of dealing with the increase in (mental health and addictions) problems," Sallerina stated. "Since their actions have directly contributed to an increase in these health problems, they should be willing to contribute towards solving these problems."

Sallerina said he planned to raise the issue of mental health and addictions and the need for related federal and territorial funding at the Nunavut Association of Municipalities meeting in Cambridge Bay last Tuesday.

In addition to Gjoa Haven's mayor and MLA calling for greater resources, the youth and women's resolutions passed at the Kitikmeot Inuit Association's AGM in Cambridge Bay in October appealed for more mental health support in all communities.

Addictions training for mobile team Counsellors mix the best of traditional knowledge and modern clinical methods

When asked in which area they would like to deepen their knowledge, counsellors with Ilisaqsivik's mobile trauma response team chose addictions, as well as selfcare.

"Obviously counsellors are seeing a lot of things with addictions out there and want more training on that," said Ilisaqsivik executive director Malcolm Ranta. "Also, they need self-care, because the demand on our services is so high that we are really burning out and it's tough to meet demand. It's especially tough to meet demand. It's always increasing, especially as people become more aware of our services."

Facilitators Kate Roach and Richard Donison of Northern Counselling and Therapeutic Services (NCTS) led the session from Nov. 13 to 18 in Clyde River, which was attended by counsellors from several Baffin communities.

Seven counsellors came from outlying communities and eight reside in Clyde River.

"Ilisaqsivik and Northern Counselling have had a strong relationship over the past number of years," said Ranta.

Counsellor co-ordinator Jerry Natanine ensures the co-ordination of the mobile response trauma unit when they answer a call from a community which needs their services.

Natanine says there isn't addictions-specific programming available at Ilisaqsivik, however, the centre has fulltime counsellors available.

Ranta notes Ilisaqsivik doesn't have the capacity or space to do this work.

"So, currently, you'll be sent south," said Ranta.

However, counsellors are always available and they work remotely with other communities by phone, over Facebook or using other platforms.

The goal of the November workshop was to ensure counsellors could better address addictions.

"What we're trying to do here is incorporate traditional knowledge about an issue, in this case addictions and the things that come when a person is addicted to something," said Natanine. "We try to get the modern day way of treating and identifying addictions and how we can incorporate the two and take the best of both worlds. We try to figure out how best to use it (modern clinical approaches) in our culture."

The counsellors explored different kinds of addiction, how it affects lives and the steps that can be taken to alleviate and support clients who are addicted, said Natanine.

"The addictions most prevalent in our region are alcohol and drugs. So a lot of

it was about alcohol and drugs and how when we first start getting addicted we ignore the signs and we don't realize how we're getting addicted until it's too late," said Natanine.

Bureaucratic red tape gets in the way of healing Counsellors also discussed how hard it is to manage referrals for treatment in the south.

"We explored some of the hardship we face and how to make it easier," said Natanine.

"In the communities, the mental health workers and psychologists that come up regularly change. One month we might get a certain person, the following month or two months after we might get another person."

"The changing of these people really hinders the process of a person who wants to go to rehab, because there are a number of visits required with the mental health worker," he added.

Natanine says it doesn't matter how many visits a client has made to Ilisaqsivik counsellors – the visits to a mental health worker are what count to qualify for a referral to treatment.

"Often times, they'll start the process, then in the middle of the process they (mental health worker) change, a new one comes in and the client still has to visit the same amount of times with the one who is (now) there. And should that one change, the whole thing just keeps going like that."

The process – starting over again with each mental health worker – can be traumatizing for the client.

"It's hard to get over that red tape," said Natanine.

Ranta adds it's also tough for clients beyond the bureaucratic process.

"It's tough being away from your community. It's tough being away from your family.

It's tough not receiving treatment in your first language.

Those are all reasons why it's so important that this new treatment centre goes ahead in Iqaluit that the Quality of Life division is working towards right now," Ranta said.

"The language is so, so important, especially in every community outside of Iqaluit."

After-care was also an important topic.

"How for people coming back from treatment centres and healing facilities … what else we can do to support them, to keep them growing on their path of healing from the addiction and healing from trauma that a lot of us here in the Arctic have faced and are facing and how to recognize how people are affected by different historical traumas."

Historical traumas include residential school, tuberculosis treatment and colonization in general.

Ilisaqsivik, which offers numerous land programs, is

"Land programs is one of the mainstays of Ilisaqsivik and something we excel at delivering. We've definitely delivered many different programs for healing, for learning and everything in between.

We've talked about potentially adopting a model out of Cambridge Bay for an addictions land program. But when you take on programs like that,

you have to make sure you have the capacity," said Ranta.

Ilisaqsivik now counts 33 counsellors who have graduated from the accredited, five-module counsellor training program called Our Life's Journey. The program was developed over 10 years with Life Works Counselling and Training Services Inc. "And more than 130 individuals have taken the courses (some modules) from communities across Nunavut –

mostly Baffin," said Ranta.

"There are Ilisaqsivik counsellors in most Baffin

communities. The reach has been good. Now it's a matter of getting them graduated."

With the legalization of cannabis and the passage of the first full year of Iqaluit's beer and wine store, 2018 has seen some major developments in the efforts to battle addiction in Nunavut.

The move to providing freer access to consumers of cannabis and alcohol is polarizing. For some, these drugs have no place in Nunavut, a territory where substance abuse has had a ruinous effect on far too many families. For others, government involvement is the right approach.

The government would point to research that shows an outright ban on cannabis and alcohol would lead – as it did for so long – to illegal sales by bootleggers in our communities. In other words, the drugs will be here whether they are managed by the government or not. At least now people who choose to consume have access at a more affordable price.

The definition of addiction Northern News Services

This is a definition from one of the dictionaries: addiction is a brain disorder characterized by compulsive engagement in rewarding stimuli despite adverse consequences; a powerful statement describing many.

When we look around and see the living conditions and the state of the residents across Nunavut, we begin to realize something is not quite right. There are many reasons and situations that cause people to act and react the way they do in their present circumstances. I believe there is a positive ending to a lot of the negatives in our lives today if we choose to change.

Our place of employment will often have us in a state of happiness and contentment – or absolute disappointment. I can attest to this while working at the Lupin Gold Mine several years ago. It seemed like there was no end in exploring and developing the ore body for commercial enterprises, but the day came when we had just reached the 1,500 meter face and we were told within days of this that we had mined out the gold.

What do I do now? Where am I going to work?

It is the beginning of winter and everything is

slow and no significant advertisements were out at this point. It was a disappointment and hard to adjust to for some time.

Other situations revolve around relationships.

The most common approach today is the attraction to an individual, the two begin living together and soon there are children born to them.

But, for one reason or another, this does not last and substance has been introduced or has been a practice during the early developments of this relationship. The use of substance turns to a dependency and unfortunately turns into a serious addiction. Not only has the relationship broken down, but their health begins to deteriorate. Their kidneys fail, the liver is not functioning the way it was meant to because of the alcohol poisoning, the heart begins to weaken and the individual is distraught and depressed.

The doctor finally says, if you do not consider what you are doing to yourself, you will not be with us much longer.

This I think is the turning point in the lifestyle and recovery begins. Although there is that period of detoxification, it is too little, too late.

Other situations are a result of prolonged trauma – namely the residential school syndrome – that has not been dealt with properly and people choose to numb this with alcohol/drugs.

In closing, although the trauma and the painful memories may be replaced for a few hours by indulging in substance, your health and your state of well-being and your relationships will be seriously affected unless you decide to do something about your habits.

You have to make that choice. No one can choose for you, but the encouraging part is: you are not alone. The support group you engage with will be there for you and someone is also there to listen and to share with you. Be strong, be brave and make up your own mind.

Seventy-four per cent of Nunavummiut ages 16 and up identified as smokers in 2016.

Helen Koaha was not among them, but she used to be.

After much encouragement from her spouse and children and many attempts at quitting – none lasting much longer than a month due to stress – she finally gave up cigarettes on Dec. 31, 2008. She hasn't had one since.

One session with a hypnotist during a visit to Edmonton did the trick, she said.

"I paid $200 and that's it," said Koaha.

A relative also succeeded in quitting smoking with the aid of a hypnotist, she added. Hypnosis didn't help a third person she knows, but acupuncture helped that person quit.

Koaha started smoking at age 14.

"I was just a bad, young teenager," she chuckled, adding that it made her feel "cool" because her friends also did it.

"It became a habit and I enjoyed smoking, especially when I had my tea or coffee," she recalled.

She would go through a pack of cigarettes every two days.

Now that she's kicked the habit for a decade, she no longer has cravings and if she happens to be near somebody who's smoking, "I don't like the smell of it," she said.

She added that she feels healthier without cigarettes. Her health was one of her main motivations for breaking her addiction.

"I want to see my kids get married or my grandchildren get married," she said.

"One of the important reasons why I quit is because I didn't want to be sick at an early age with cancer."

Smoking is the leading cause of lung cancer and lung cancer rates among Inuit are the highest among any demographic in the world, according to Statistics Canada.

One in five deaths in Nunavut is due to smoking, the Nunavut Department of Health stated.

More than 59-million cigarettes were sold to Nunavummiut between April 1, 2017 and March 31, 2018, the Tobacco Control Act annual report revealed. That marked a very small increase over the previous year.

However, sales of loose tobacco, chew and other non-smoked tobacco products fell by up to 37.4 per cent.

In addition to lung cancer, smoking can lead to pneumonia, chronic obstructive lung disease and it exacerbates asthma and tuberculosis.

To help Nunavummiut shed cigarettes, the GN sponsors the Nunavut QuitLine, which is anytime at 1-866-368-7848.

Local pharmacies and health centres also offer products like nicotine patches, inhalers, gum and medications to assist those trying to quit smoking.

Kenojuak print fetches Canadian record Artist's family will see none of auction winner's $216,000 bid

A Kenojuak Ashevak stonecut print titled The Enchanted Owl set a new benchmark for prints at a Canadian auction, commanding $216,000 in Toronto on Nov. 20.

The amount shattered the $100,000-$120,000 estimate set prior to auction.

"It's a great tribute to a great artist," said auctioneer Duncan McLean, who serves as Inuit art specialist for Waddington's, the auction house that hosted the event.

The former record for a Canadian print belonged to Sybil Andrews, an EnglishCanadian artist who resided in Campbell River, B.C. Her print titled Speedway brought in $129,000 in 2015.

The previous high price paid for a Kenojuak print was Rabbit Eating Seaweed, which sold for $59,000.

"I was astounded," said Joemee Taktaungai, assistant studio manager for the West Baffin Eskimo Co-op in Cape Dorset, of the new record sale price. "We're very happy that this happened ... Kenojuak's talent is well-known and wellrespected within the community. She's been inspiring to a younger generation already, but I'm hoping we'll get more enthusiastic young artists to start doing their work. It takes a while to get recognized."

Waddington's declined to release any information about the buyer of The Enchanted Owl, who bid $180,000 and then paid a 20 per cent buyer's premium and taxes to bring the final price up to $216,000.

20 auction will not directly benefit Kenojuak's family.

The Canadian Artists Representation (CARFAC), a national association of visual artists, has advocated since 2011 for a five per cent royalty to go to artists whose pieces

sell for more than $1,000. To date, the federal government has not adopted any such legislation.

"I think that's a very good idea. Not only the late artist would benefit on that, but the descendants would benefit on

that," Taktaungai said.

Ashevak, a renowned Cape Dorset artist who lived from 1927-2013, has a cultural centre and print shop named in her honour in her hometown.

Other exceptional pieces that sold during the Nov. 20

auction include a carving by the late Osuitok Ipeelee of Cape Dorset. The carving, titled Standing Caribou, went to a bidder offering $16,000. A Dancing Bear carving by Cape Dorset's Pauta Saila sold for $12,000.

The number of homicides in Nunavut surged to six in 2017 compared to just one in 2016, but the Yukon, at eight, was the territory with the most homicides last year.

There were two recorded killings in the NWT in 2017, according to

data released by Statistics Canada on Nov. 21.

Nunavut's six homicides were the most in the past several years, eclipsing the five killings recorded in 2012.

The homicide rate in Nunavut,

with its relatively small population under 38,000 residents in 2017, stood at 15.79 per 100,000, trailing only the Yukon nationally, which came in at 20.8. The rate is based on homicides per 100,000, so it is projected

Across Canada, homicides accounted for 660 deaths in 2017, 48 more than 2016, according to Statistics Canada. Firearm-related deaths rose 18 per cent year over year, the

national statistics agency reported.

Put in another context, homicides remain a relatively rare occurrence, Statistics Canada noted. Killings represented less than 0.2 per cent of all police-reported violent Criminal Code offences nationally in 2017.

Youth tackle politics

Nunavut Every two years, youth from across the territory are given the opportunity to participate in the territorial parliamentary process.

The event is hosted by the speaker of the legislative assembly and this year's that's Joe Enook.

"Students who participate in this event learn about the parliamentary process while experiencing the challenge of assuming the role of an elected member of the legislative assembly," stated Enook in a news release.

To participate, students from Nunavut's twenty-two constituencies submitted applications through their schools.

Minister of Education and MLA for South Baffin David Joanasie appeared before the youth parliament to answer students' questions concerning initiatives for which he is responsible – Language, Culture and Heritage, along with Education.

Qaggiq School completes another course with performance

Nunavut Of more than 50 applicants, 20 Nunavut musicians took the latest course offering from the Qaggiq School of Performing Arts Nov. 14 to 22.

The Qaggiq School offers credit courses and is a partnership between the Qaggiavuut Society, the Nunatta Isiginnaartitsisarfia (National Theatre School of Greenland) and the National Theatre School of Canada.

"The Arctic Song course was around pisiit revitalization, but it was also to give a group of artists skills to put on a professional presentation," said Qaggiavuut program manager Kathleen Merritt.

"The participants worked with professional choreographers from the south, as well as professional choreographers from the North. It was around movement, stage presence. But we also asked them to learn the traditional songs (pisiit), as well as some contemporary."

Students also received voice and sound training.

Merritt notes the course took place in churches, a soup kitchen and the Franco Centre in Iqaluit because Nunavut still lacks a performing arts centre.

The Arctic Song Music Performance course culminated in an evening performance at the Franco Centre.

Tessa Lochhead, who, with Karen Nutarak, worked for several years to get the Pond Inlet project started in 2016.

The concept for Pirurvik Preschool is the blending of Montessori educational methods with Inuit traditional methods. The program, which also trains educators in the community, proved so successful it expanded to Clyde River.

"Pirurvik – A Place to Grow aims to change the lives of children throughout Nunavut by developing innovative and comprehensive early childhood education programs that are rooted in Inunnguiniq and responsive to the needs of each community," according to the Arctic Inspiration Prize description.

The annual award ceremony, which sees $3 million shared among projects from all over the North, is scheduled to be held at the Yukon Arts Centre in Whitehorse on February 12, 2019, in conjunction with the Arctic Indigenous Investment Conference.

Ice research resumes

Gjoa Haven Researchers examining changes to ice and snow in and around Gjoa Haven were back in the community last week for the second year of a five-year study, according to James Qitsualik, president of the Gjoa Haven Hunters and Trappers Association.

Elders are being consulted on the differences they've witnessed in their lifetimes, Qitsualik said.

The researchers will use satellite images to help create maps that will be accessible in an online database and they will make presentations to youth to help them understand changes and how to remain safe, he added.

"We might have a little bit longer summer, which creates a little bit warmer oceans, which makes it dangerous a little bit longer than average," Qitsualik said of the transforming landscape.

There have been some startling extremes too, he noted. For example, north of King William Island, the ocean normally freezes in late November, but there was a recent year when it wasn't solid ice until early January, said Qitsualik.

Changes in snowfall have also been dramatic at times, he added.

"In the past we used to have a lot more snow. Now all of the snow is bypassing us, going further south," he said, pointing out that the changing conditions can put snowmobilers at greater risk of accidents and skis on the machines can be damaged by unnoticed rocks

that have only a light covering of snow.

Various animals and insects have been migrating to the island as well. Sandhill cranes, ground squirrels and black flies have become common, he said and grizzly bear sightings have also increased.

"So we're starting to see more southern animals come up this way," he said.

Gearing up for Christmas

Sanirajak/Hall Beach Recreation coordinator Lena Kautaq is busy planning for Christmas activities, including a pair of community feasts.

A turkey dinner will take place on Christmas Day. That will be followed by a traditional meal the next day. It will feature fish, caribou and walrus, Kautaq said.

"We will cut (the animals) up and people can come over and grab some meat and eat them there (at the community hall)," she said.

"That's what we do here."

A square dance and various games, for residents of all ages, will be held afterwards on the evening of Dec. 26, she added.

New fitness centre proves popular

Iglulik A new fitness centre that opened for its first full month in October has attracted close to 100 regular users, said Jose Quezada, the community's former recreation coordinator.

Quezada put the proposal together for the fitness centre, located in a room in the arena, while he was working in the hamlet's recreation department. Money came from wellness funding through the Department of Health, he said.

Equipment consists of a dumbbell rack, a bench press, a cable and pulley machine, a hockey slide board, a rowing machine and a situp bench, all of which came in during sealift.

The high school donated a Bowflex workout machine and a treadmill.

The facility is open from 1 to 10 p.m. during the week and on weekends, said Quezada.

Membership is free, but users must go through an orientation session with recreation staff to be shown how to properly use the equipment.

"It gives people another option for a place to hang out," Quezada said of the motivation for creating the fitness centre.

Fire sale tainted by soot, smoky smell WSCC investigates air quality complaint as Iqaluit NorthMart opens after Nov. 8 fire

When the Iqaluit NorthMart reopened its doors to shoppers Saturday, Nov. 17 after a fire decimated its neighbouring warehouse, Iqalungmiut were shocked by the overpowering smell of smoke in the store and sooty residue evident on the general merchandise, which was on sale at 50 per cent off.

Iqalungmiut took to social media to complain about headaches and being unable to remain on the premises.

On Monday, Department of Health inspectors, Qikiqtaaluk Environmental, Workers Safety and Compensation Commission (WSCC) investigators and the Department of Environment visited the store.

This was the fourth visit by Health officials, and inspectors noted air scrubbers had been turned off over the weekend, which may have worsened the odour.

Air scrubbers are portable filtration systems that remove particles, gases and chemicals from the air.

"And signs were not posted (advising) customers to wash items before use. NorthMart addressed these items immediately," stated environmental

health officer Greg Thibault by email.

In a letter to NorthMart owner North West Company after the first inspection Nov. 9, Thibault indicated the retail area of the store was affected by smoke only.

"Water has spilled over to the retail area, but has only affected the floor. Product on the shelves was not affected by water," he stated.

The department also contracted Qikiqtaaluk Environmental to perform air quality testing.

"Air quality results indicate particulate levels were acceptable. Health and other agencies will continue to address any potential health concerns related to the fire."

However, WSCC confirmed Tuesday a NorthMart employee reported an unsafe work environment.

"A WSCC safety officer followed up at the worksite with regards to the report, as well as performed a general inspection of the worksite on November 19th. An inspection report was issued to the employer," stated acting manager of communication for WSCC Sarah McLeod by email.

But McLeod noted the commission does not make the results of investigations available to the public.

"The employer must post a copy of the inspection in a location available

for the workers to review," she stated.

McLeod also stated the commission can issue a stop-work order if there is an imminent or immediate danger to life or health.

Thibault stated that the Department of Health "continues to assess and address any potential health concerns related to the fire at NorthMart."

He described previous inspections, including the first on Nov. 9, the day after the fire.

"During the initial inspection conducted by environmental health officers, direction on cleaning, ventilation, cooling equipment replacement and product disposal was provided.

Potentially smoke-exposed foods, medicines or medical supplies were disposed," stated Thibault.

"At the second inspection, prior to opening, compliance with recommendations was noted. NorthMart indicated that air scrubbers would be used to reduce smoke odour. Additional points to address before opening included some repairs, cleaning the floors and ventilation systems for each cooler and posting signage to recommend washing discounted clothing and household items. " Thibault states officials conducted a third inspection Saturday morning.

The thick billowing smoke from the Nov. 8 NorthMart warehouse fire affected the main retail store, raising questions from employees and shoppers about potential health hazards after the store reopened Nov. 17.

"At which point items from the second inspection had been addressed," he stated.

The GN's Department of Environment is also on the scene.

"The department's environmental protection officers are working with the responsible party on ensuring that any spill of contaminants is contained and that site remediation efforts are

carried out," stated acting manager of communications, education and outreach Peter Polanowski by email.

"As this is an ongoing investigation the department will not be releasing any additional information."

Senior officials with the North West Company, which owns NorthMart, did not respond to emails and phone calls.

It's worth the trip to Edmonton … if you're a wrestler from Cambridge Bay. Five of the community's young athletes hit the mats at the University of Alberta in Edmonton for the Golden Bear Takedown Tournament on Nov. 17. When all was said and done, two gold medals came home as Eekeeluak Avalak and Kristen McCallum ended up atop their divisions.

Coach Chris Crooks made the trip as well ,and said it was a long day, but one the wrestlers enjoyed.

Avalak went unbeaten in his division, winning all five of his matches. The impressive part about the win was he did it fighting up a division.

"I moved him up to the senior high division for Grades 10 through 12," said Crooks. "He's in Grade 9 but I wanted him to have a challenge, but I knew he would do really well. I knew the competition would be tougher for him but at the same time, I didn't want him to have any easy matches."

Even after he was done officially, Avalak still wanted to wrestle, said Crooks, so he found a willing opponent in an exhibition match.

Avalak ended up losing on points, 12-10,

but it was only decided in the last few seconds.

"It was tied 10-10 and his opponent ended up scoring two late," said Crooks.

McCallum's gold medal was her first career podium finish in wrestling and Crooks said it's a great way for her to start her wrestling career.

"This is her first year in wrestling," he said. "She's a basketball player and a really good all-around athlete, but she wanted to give wrestling a try."

McCallum fought in the junior high category and ended up winning all four of her matches for the title.

"It's great for her confidence because it shows her that she can be competitive in a really physical sport," said Crooks.

The other competitors didn't embarrass themselves by any stretch. Roy Goose ended up winning two of his matches in his division while Shaye McCallum and Aislyn Omilgoetok each won one of their matches.

Speed skaters hit the ice

Naujaat It's an exciting month for young hockey players in Naujaat.

Calm Air was scheduled to be in the community earlier this month to size every kid in the community for their own set of hockey equipment.

Next up for the wrestlers is the territorial championships in Iqaluit in January, which will be a qualifier for the 2019 Western Canada Summer Games.

Kangiqliniq/Rankin Inlet It was Texas hold 'em time in Rankin Inlet as a poker tournament was held in the curling lounge at the Rankin Inlet arena on Nov. 24, beginning at 2:15 p.m., with a buy-in of $100.

The event is being held as a fundraiser for the Rankin men's futsal team, which is travelling to a tournament in Saskatoon.

I'm one of the lucky people in life. ᓄᖅᑲᖓᓚᐅᑲᒃᓯᒪᔪᒥ ᑲᒪᒋᔭᖃᕐᓂᕐᒧᑦ ᓇᖕᒥᓂᖅ I've never become addicted to drugs or alcohol of any sort. ᐊᑲᐅᙱᓕᐅᕈᑎᒋᔭᖏᓐᓄᑦ. ᑭᓲᖕᒪᖔᑕ, ᐱᕕᒃᓴᖃᕆᐊᖃᕐᒪᑦ Came close with the booze, but one evening a long time ago ᐱᓕᕆᓂᖃᕐᓂᕐᒧᑦ, ᑮᒃᑯᓕᒫᑐᐃᓐᓇᕐᓄᑦ ᐊᑐᖅᑐᒥ made me realize it wasn't worth it anymore. ᐊᒃᓱᕉᓴᖕᓂᐅᔪᒥ.

Long story short: don't start drinking at a school function in 2003 and find yourself waking up the next morning beside someone in a hotel room in Toronto you can't remember being with the night before and neither of you knows what, if anything, happened. Funny how that sobers you up rapidly.

I've managed to self-police my alcohol consumption. I'm no angel and I haven't sworn off it because I do have a swally or two now and then but never to excess. Part of that comes from growing up in a household where alcohol was a problem. I always told myself I would never let it affect my life the way it affected my father for so many years. I used to tell people – jokingly – that if I ever ended up like my father, shoot me because I photo courtesy of Wikimedia Commons don't want to live life the way he did.

Whatever honest – I didn't think he would stay on the wagon. He has, they are, he needs the time to deal with them, like though and I'm proud of him for doing it. everyone else who's going through a rough patch.

So many others aren't so lucky. I've seen so many people – some of them friends – go down that path of addiction and it takes over everything. They lose their jobs, their families, their with addiction and mentioned how Tootoo was an example of homes, everything. It's so sad and so depressing. someone who reached out for help.

The world of sports has its own sad stories of addiction, too No one can force you to seek help. My dad was gently told many to count. We all remember Jordin Tootby our family doctor that if he didn't stop oo and his voluntary entry into the National drinking and get help for it, he would be dead Hockey League's substance abuse program within six months. The doctor couldn't force because of his addiction to alcohol. Thankhim to seek help because my dad had to tell the fully, he's managed to stay clean and is now doctor he needed it. That's when change can raising a family with his wife Jennifer. He's begin. And it won't make you less of a man – or one of the lucky ones who realized he needed woman – for asking for it. with James McCarthy help and asked for it.

There are also the humourous stories, if He was probably told he needed to do you will, about athletes who did crazy things something about his problems but the key is during their careers because they were using you need to ask for help. There's also the story told by Ric Flair, the professional wrestler, about how he went on a road trip with Bob Probert after the late hockey enforcer had just gotten out of rehab. Probert was on his way to do some work for World Championship Wrestling and Flair recounted how Probert downed 30 beers and two packs of cigarettes on the trip.

Then there's the urban legend of how Wade Boggs, the Hall of Fame baseball player, horsed 64 beers on a road trip during his time with the New York Yankees. Jeff Nelson, his teammate with the Yankees at the time, swears he saw Boggs drink 64 cans of Miller Lite on a trip to Seattle. How does that even happen?

You can laugh at these stories but it gets awfully depressing when you take a step back and look at them for what they are.

Those athletes obviously had problems – Probert had his personal demons for years before he died – and it's no good going through life like that.

The most recent issue of public over-refreshment came at the Red Deer Curling Classic. No need to re-hash the details because it's become an infamously international sensation. The fallout from that included Ryan Fry, normally the third for Brad Jacobs' rink, announcing he was stepping back to deal with his issues and get his life together. The investigation done by the World Curling Federation determined he was the antagonist of everything that happened.

If this is what Fry needs to do, then he needs to do it and we need to let him do it. We all make stupid decisions and we all do stupid things – hell, I've made and done more than my share in my lifetime – but we need to give Fry a chance to fix what ails him. Just because he's a professional athlete doesn't make it any different nor does it mean he's a horrible person. If that was the case, every single athlete in any other sport who ever got drunk in public would be burned at the stake.

This edition of Nunavut News is dedicated to addictions and how people have lived through them. If you're living with demons you can't get rid of on your own and you want help, ask for it. I implore you to do so. No one will think any less of you because of it and if anyone does, they are the ones with the real problem.

The Travelers Curling Club Championships features nothing but the best club curlers from around the country battling it out to see who is the best.

Nunavut was once again among the men's and women's teams in action at this year's event in Miramichi,
