Garry Beattie jokes that he's not leaving Cambridge Bay to become a "roadie" for Tom Cochrane.

But for two nights last week, he got to act as Cochrane's sound technician, at least.

When the iconic Canadian rocker put on a community concert on Feb. 10 and headlined the 20th Kitikmeot Trade Show on Feb. 11, Beattie had the hamlet's Bose sound system all hooked up and ready to go. The logistics of travelling to the Arctic meant

Cochrane and accompanying musician Bill Bell only brought their Takamine guitars, no other gear.

"It was a lot of fun for me ... this is one I'll remember for a long time, for sure," Beattie said. "He's such a pleasure to work with. He knows what he wants ... it was really, truly a professional sitting, a jam almost."

Beattie, a musician himself, has close to 45 years of experience working with acoustics and is periodically found hooking up sound systems for various events around town.

"My system ran good (last week), no troubles, no breakdowns.

It was great," he said "That's always in a technician's mind: I hope it goes good."

Beattie also recorded both concerts. Cochrane asked him afterwards to mix it and send him the final product.

"And I thought, Holy catfish! I'm so looking forward to doing that. It's a really neat thing," said Beattie.

Fellow Cambridge Bay resident and Cochrane fan Derek Marshall was in the crowd to catch the acoustic performance and he was thoroughly impressed.

"It was very intimate. They rocked it, they did rock it," Marshall said. "The sound was killer ... they nailed Life is a Highway.

It was their last song of the night. That was a really good song. It sounded awesome."

Marshall is particularly fond of Cochrane's earlier hits, recorded with band Red Rider, such as Lunatic Fringe and White Hot. It wasn't the first time Marshall heard the hit-maker from Lynn Lake, Man., sing live. He caught Cochrane as the opener for Van Halen at BC Place in Vancouver in the mid-1980s.

He never had a chance to speak with Cochrane back then, but he did in Cambridge Bay. "He's a very friendly guy ... for being a music icon in Canada, you'd figure he'd have some type of ego, but none whatsoever," Marshall said, adding that Cochrane's management team members were also very approachable. "Really good people, down to earth."

A member of Cambridge Bay's radio society, Marshall created a promo for the public concert to help get the word out. Even with the advertisement, the community hall wasn't full on Feb. 10.

Cambridge Bay has a young population that has never heard of Cochrane, whose songs climbed the charts in the 1980s and '90s, and most elders have little interest in that sort of music, so it left a relatively small demographic to draw from, Marshall reasoned.

Before Cochrane and his modest entourage left town, Beattie had an opportunity to show them something different: he introduced them to his old tracked vehicle. Cochrane's road manager went for a drive in it.

"It goes anywhere in the snow. It's like a little tank," said Beattie. "They'd never seen one. Tom was so excited. He took a hundred pictures of it."

Twenty years of trade show progress Former Cambridge Bay economic development officer marvels how hospitality, catering and mining industries have evolved

On the 20th anniversary of the Kitikmeot Trade Show, some time was devoted to reflect on how far the event, and the region, has come.

A panel of original trade show participants was assembled and they were acknowledged for their years of dedication.

The Willy Laserich Memorial Corporate Citizen Award was bestowed upon them. Charlie Lyall, Wilf Wilcox, Charlie Evalik, Brenda Mercer, Dan Kane and Keith Peterson were the joint recipients.

"I think it was a nice touch for the (trade show steering) committee to recognize and honour their commitment and achievement to bring the trade show from where it started to where it is now," said trade show organizer Jim MacEachern.

Mercer was Cambridge Bay's economic development officer in 1999 when the inaugural trade show got off the ground. She remembers Canadian North spearheading the initiative with an aim to further ties between Yellowknife and Cambridge Bay. By the third year, thenmayor Keith Peterson, and Charlie Lyall, then-president of the Kitikmeot Corporation, decided "let's have our own trade show," said Mercer.

"There was a lot of benefits from that, and they could see it was a good idea."

She said it's apparent how the local catering and hospitality industries, in particular, have made great strides over the past two decades.

"Cambridge Bay is a very friendly place and it always has been and even this week you hear that, just how warmly welcomed everybody is," she said.

As for catering, she recalled that just one resident would attempt to cook for all the trade show delegates in the early years of the event and "it was kind of overwhelming."

Since then Nunavut Arctic College has started cooking programs and local catering businesses have sprung up.

"The catering this week was just unbelievable," Mercer said. "That's great because there's so many economic spinoffs from the (trade) show – people come in and businesses are making money."

The venue has also been a useful occasion for company executives – especially in mining and exploration – to communicate with regional business and political leaders, she added, noting that the Hope Bay gold project has become operational after many years as a glimmering prospect.

It was about 10 years ago

that delegates at the trade show made a case for Cambridge Bay to host the Canadian High Arctic Research Station, which is now a reality.

"I think it helped to say, Hey, we can do these things," said Mercer, who went on to become self-employed as an event planner in Nunavut.

Although Ontario her been her base of operations for the past several years, she said she maintains strong connections in the North.

She also lauded the Kitikmeot Trade Show's efforts to foster future leaders by bringing in two youth from each Kitikmeot community. While there, the youth hear about the importance of staying in school, and engage in on-theland programs.

The Kitikmeot Inuit Association has since taken over that role and adopted a men-

toring program for youth.

"The group of students that were selected (this year) were very impressive, spoke very well. Part of what they're learning is how to network, how to speak to a crowd, how to introduce yourself, how to shake hands ... there were some (youth) in that group it was like, Wow, you can tell there's some leaders emerging, for sure," Mercer said. "I think it's a great component of the show."

One thing that has not changed is the limitations of the community hall, which restricts attendance to 200 people. Marla Limousin, Cambridge Bay's senior administrative officer, told Nunavut News last year that the community is motivated to build a new recreation complex to have more room for various events.

$1M for Pirurvik preschool program Plus, Cambridge Bay's From Scrap to Art wins prize in Arctic Inspiration Prize's $100,000 category

An innovative made-in-Nunavut preschool program has $1 million to invest in expansion thanks to the Arctic Inspiration Prize.

The Pirurvik Preschool in Pond Inlet, which allows children to express natural curiosity to learn about what interests them at a pace that suits them, was announced as the big winner during the Arctic Inspiration Prize ceremony in Whitehorse on Tuesday evening. Children from three months to five years of age are involved in this style of learning, based on the Inuit Qaujimajatuqangit principle of Pilimmaksarniq, and Montessori methods.

The program is available in seven Nunavut communities in three regions and there's talk of establishing it throughout the territory in the future.

"We have a dream to build a high-quality, culturally-relevant early childhood education program for the community of Pond Inlet," said program co-director Tessa Lochhead, who was joined onstage by her counterpart, Karen Nutarak. "This type of programming affects whole families, it affects whole communities."

A Kitikmeot Heritage Society program, Uqarluta Inuinnaqtun – Let's Speak Inuinnaqtun, was one of two runners-up for the $1-million grand prize.

Andrew Kitigon A Cambridge Bay welding program for at-risk youth that has produced a striking muskox statue and eye-catching wolves earned $100,000 in the youth category.

Cambridge Bay's Andrew Kitigon is the team leader for the project, From Scrap to Art. It was designed to imbue participants with welding skills, elevate their self-esteem and enhance their cultural knowledge.

The Hamlet of Cambridge Bay and the Kitikmeot Inuit Association threw their support behind the initiative.

"We are not really good in school, but we are good at building," Kitigon said during his acceptance speech. "Our imagination runs a million miles a minute, but, in the end, what do we do with all the ideas?"

Standing alongside Kitigon, welding program participant Kaitak Allukpik added, "It changed our lives ... we thank God each day that we've been given the gift to become leaders and share knowledge with other youth, other young people like us.

We look forward to creating more art for our community."

Allukpik added that the $100,000 will go toward getting the welding program's shop "working all the time."

The Nunavut Law Program was a runner-up in the AIP category, which offers up to $500,000.

The Rideau Hall Foundation oversees the annual Arctic Inspiration Prize, which was conceived by Canadian philanthropists in 2012 to reward Arctic knowledge and innovation.

Feds lack courage to protect Inuktut Northern News Services

Inuit Tapiriit Kanatami (ITK) says Inuktut is Canada's most resilient Indigenous language. Perhaps ITK shouldn't be broadcasting this fact.

The federal government seems to have used Inuktut's resilience to overlook the language in its proposed Indigenous languages bill.

Canadian Heritage Minister Pablo Rodriguez's announcement of the bill earlier this month left Inuit on the short end of the deal. ITK made its disapproval known by skipping the announcement.

Last summer, ITK expected the bill to contain sections specific to the three national Indigenous groups representing Inuit, First Nations and Metis in Canada. ITK had drafted its own wording for the section, and was working with the feds to tweak the wording in the common elements of the bill.

That Inuit-specific section is not to be found, ITK stated in a release the day of the announcement.

"The Government of Canada engaged Inuit in bad faith throughout this legislative initiative," according to president Natan Obed.

ITK notes that Inuktut is spoken by 84 per cent of Inuit in the 51 communities across Inuit Nunangat, an expanse of land that covers more than one-third of Canada. It's the

A meaningful meeting is one that results in well-informed engagement for all parties of interest. This involves planning and understanding the scope of the issues at hand.

When we look around us, we recognize that social matters are complex but relative; a connection with other entities. For example, when we talk about mining this involves Crown land, Inuit owned lands, the environment, the wildlife and humans. A process of negotiation comes alive with the proponent and the affected population.

The party interested in a particular parcel of land will give notification of interest and do some preliminary testing to confirm the quantity and quality of identified material.

When they find a substantial amount with good or high grade, then they place a formal request for a feasibility study, which usually leads to assessments and procedures for a permit, licence and so on. The public becomes involved through fact finding and will question how the interested party will address any type of impact the project might present to the public, environment and the wildlife.

To have a meaningful engagement allows for many meetings to see how the proponent tries to convince the public and the regulators that every measure will be taken into account for mitigation to the immediate environment, the wildlife and marine habitat along with human interactions.

For the meetings to be successful and productive, open and transparent dialogue moves the system forward and the public will get a good understanding, the interested party can proceed with their management and business plans through well written documentation and strong human resource establishment.

This sounds simple enough, but to implement the site and production of materials, strong leadership that allows meaningful engagement of the public and regulators can make the proceedings unfold much easier. There are risks and rewards in medium and large operations and, if everyone does their part, it can be profitable as well.

There are several ways to a more relaxed approach in informing the public of the development and extraction of base and precious metals.

There are presentations, gatherings, trade shows and limited site visits to give the public a handson view of the actual operations.

In the early 1990s my wife was able to travel to the Lupin Mine site with some of her colleagues from the hamlet council to see first-hand what I would be getting into with mining underground. They had to don the personal safety equipment and undergo some safety orientation before proceeding underground. This is also a good way of showing meaningful engagement for those who are at home while the workers go to work.

In my View Harry Maksagak is a Cambridge Bay resident and former underground miner at the Lupin gold mine. He has been married for 43 years and has five children, 28 grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

On a more personal level, meaningful communication between partners will enhance the relationship and this openness will strengthen the ties and bonds and equip the couple with tools and techniques in addressing whatever comes their way.

Life is fast, complex and involves others as well. Our children have a certain impact on us as parents and we are always planning and making sure their basic needs are met with food, clothing and shelter, but most importantly they need our love and affection to grow. Taking the time to talk with them and allow them to know they belong and are included in our plans gives them confidence and assurance that they are special in our lives.

This is what 'meaningful' is all about.

As you mature and have gained knowledge and understanding, you went through some stuff that helped you to understand you are not the only person in life. You learn to put your personal agenda aside and make every effort to make the other person(s) feel included and considered.

We wish this is always the case but things happen, life happens, good things happen, bad things happen. If we think clearly, meaningful growth takes us a long way.

Baffinland Iron Mines opens 800-person camp Northern News Services

Mary River Mine As Baffinland Iron Mines gears up to increase production at the Mary River mine, an 800-person camp was officially opened on Feb. 13.

The increased production – to six million metric tonnes per year

in 2019 – will result in increased benefits for Inuit including enhanced employment and training opportunities, Baffinland stated in a news release.

Based on suggestions by company employees, the camp has been named Sailiivik, which translates as a comfortable place to rest and relax,

and a place for families to come together.

"Sailiivik Camp represents an important investment in Baffinland employees," said Brian Penney, the mining company's president and CEO. "It embodies Baffinland's commitment to continue to build an

inclusive, respectful, and family atmosphere at site."

Wednesday's opening ceremony included the unveiling of a mural in the recreation room created by Inuit youth from Iglulik and Cape Dorset.

Victoria heads to Paris runways

Iqaluit Victoria Kakuktinniq of Victoria's Arctic Fashion is headed to Paris Fashion Week in late February, bringing the work of eight fellow Inuit designers to complete her head-to-toe looks.

Her designs will be featured at the Flying Solo show, as well as through International Indigenous Fashion Week's Paris offering of eight established designers and eight emerging designers.

"Paris Fashion Week is a dream come true," stated Kakuktinniq by email. "I was chosen out of hundreds of applicants to be a designer to watch at both shows. I cannot explain how grateful I feel and nervous for this opportunity. I believe this opportunity comes with a great responsibility to ensure 100 per cent Inuit representation on the world fashion stage for my V.A.F. designs."

Kakuktinniq said she was offered the items of Parisian designers to complete her looks, but she opted instead to support her Inuit community. With that in mind, she turned to social media, asking for collaborators.

"There is a lot that goes into runway shows that people don't realize. For every model, we need to provide footwear, jewelry, accessories," said Kakuktinniq.

Kelly Fraser Indspires

Calgary Sanikiluaq's own songstress, activist and role model Kelly Fraser will receive a youth award at the 2019 Indspire Awards Feb. 22 in Calgary.

Created in 1993, the Indspire Awards represent the highest honour from the Indigenous community for Indigenous professionals and youth who demonstrate outstanding career achievement.

"They promote self-esteem and pride for Indigenous communities and provide outstanding role models for Indigenous youth," according to the website.

Fraser is recognized for her use of modern pop music to strengthen Inuit culture and language and to promote the Inuit way of life to young people across Canada.

Nominated for Indigenous Album of the Year at the 2018 Juno Awards for the Inuktitut and English album Sedna, Fraser believes that contemporary music in Inuktitut will increase pride in Inuit identity.

"By sharing her own personal struggles, Kelly brings hope to Indigenous youth who are struggling like she has," according to the program notes. "When she's not creating or performing her own music, Kelly teaches Inuktitut language lessons, does cultural and motivational speaking, teaches songwriting, and helps to organize Nunavut Hitmakerz, a project which aims to give underprivileged Nunavummiut youth opportunities to learn creative expression and technical skills."

Lifetime Achievement for Atuat Akittirq

Also earning an Indspire award was Iglulik's Atuat Akittirq.

The 83-year-old lived a nomadic life in Nunavut's Aggu region until she was relocated to the municipality that is now her home.

Akittirq has sat on the Elder Advisory Committee with the Department of Education since 2004.

She's long been an advocate for including Inuit language and culture in the school system and continues to practise Inuit traditions and customs in her own life. She earned a Genie Award for best costume design in 2010 for her work with Isuma Productions and she's Indspire's lifetime achievement award winner this year.

Songwriting and recording sessions in the offing

Kinngait/Cape Dorset The Kinngait Performing Arts Club inherited some studio recording equipment as a result of the Nunavut Hitmakerz workshops and concert in the community in early February.

That equipment will be put to use by local residents in the coming months, said Claude Constantineau, the performing arts club's founder and lead organizer.

"We're going to be getting people to sign up in small groups to come in and we'll start working on how do we do recordings and look at doing some songwriting activities and workshops," said Constantineau.

The Kinngait Performing Arts Club, established in 2014, has arranged numerous concerts in Cape Dorset over the past five years. In addition, the group has assisted with mental health awareness and health-related events.

Nattiq Frolics planning rolling along

Iglulik It was team Tumilii that prevailed in a six-squad fundraising hockey tournament in Iglulik over the Feb. 8 to 10 weekend.

Proceeds from the event – amounting to just over $2,000, according to Igloolik Hockey Association treasurer Leonard Okkumaluk – will go toward sending a senior men's team to the Terence Tootoo Memorial hockey tournament in Rankin Inlet in March.

Minor hockey and adult hockey are taking place regularly throughout the week at the Iglulik community arena, Okkumaluk added.

Kugluktuk The Nattiq Frolics spring festival will be held April 15 to 21, and planning is well underway.

The cook-offs featuring local cuisine – such as caribou stew, muskox, fish and bannock – will return this spring, said recreation director Matt Craddock.

A variety of always-popular snowmobile races will be the prime attractions on a couple of days, he said.

Talent shows for three age groups, including adults, will also take place.

Eight members off to Australia for inaugural Chan Hun International Taekwondo Federation World Championships

If you've been following the Iqaluit Taekwondo Society's exploits in recent years, you will know that whenever they travel to events, good things usually happen in terms of medals.

Its next trip, though, is the biggest one the society will be embarking on and it's a pretty big deal.

Eight of the society's members will be taking off for Melbourne, Australia, and the inaugural Chan Hun International Taekwondo Federation World Championships from March 8 to 10.

They will be part of Team Canada's delegation of 42 members.

Pat McDermott, the society's president, said this will be a chance for the athletes to show off their wares in front of a global audience.

"We've done lots of training and we've had great support from Phap Lu, the federation's president, for a long time," he said. "This is going to be a great opportunity for our members

to demonstrate their skills on a world stage and see how we fit in with the global community of taekwondo."

The group of eight from Iqaluit are some of the society's senior members with most of them at a black belt level of some degree, McDermott added.

"Blue belts and up are eligible to compete and I wish we were able to send more but it's a case of limited funds," he said.

The tournament will feature athletes from 23 countries with events in both poomse (patterns) and sparring over the two-and-a-half days of competition in both solo and team categories.

There will also be separate divisions for senior black belts – fifth degree and above – along with a division for those with special needs.

McDermott said the special needs division was a big topic of conversation when it was discussed last June.

"We had a leaders meeting at the General Choi tournament (in Ottawa) and a lot of people felt it was a great way to promote inclusiveness

Team Nunavut off and running

Sydney, N.S. Nunavut's entry at the Scotties Tournament of Hearts in Sydney, N.S., is well underway.

Jenine Bodner and her rink of Alison Griffin, Jennifer Blaney, Megan Ingram and Sadie Pinksen got going on the opening day of action of the Canadian women's curling championship on Feb. 16 with a game against Quebec. They followed that up the next day with two games against Ontario and B.C. and play just one game today against Northern Ontario.

The society had a full training session late last month with Curtis Lu, who made the trip to Iqaluit from Ottawa, to go over some team training and work on what they needed to in advance of Australia.

"The concentration was on refining techniques in both sparring and patterns," said McDermott. "Curtis talked about the psychological element of competing in an event like this and there was also work on our fitness levels."

The General Choi tournament in Ottawa is usually the biggest trip each year for the society, which usually comports itself quite well with an average of around one podium finish per member.

McDermott said the society has an excellent chance of being on the podium in some form in Australia but that isn't the main goal.

"I don't want to put any undue pressure on anyone to go out and win," he said. "The primary thing for us is to go out there and compete

toba with their final round-robin game against Nova Scotia on Wednesday.

If they manage to finish in the top four, they will advance to the championship round, which determines the teams that will make the playoffs.

The tournaments roll on

Kangiqliniq/Rankin Inlet The latest tournament in Hockeytown, Nunavut, has come and gone for another year.

The Polar Bear Plate wrapped up on Feb. 17 with nine teams from Rankin Inlet, Chesterfield Inlet, Coral Harbour, Naujaat, Baker Lake, Whale Cove, Arviat and Iqaluit hitting the ice in Rankin Inlet to determine the best juvenile/junior team in the territory. The round-robin got going on Valentine's Day evening and finished up on Feb. 16. The playoffs got underway the following day with the championship game scheduled for 9 p.m. on Feb. 17.

We have had success in the past but there's no pressure on them. It's all about improving and stacking ourselves up versus the best from around the globe."

The team will depart Iqaluit on March 3 and will eventually meet up with a majority of the team when they arrive in Vancouver to grab their connecting flight to Melbourne.

McDermott said one thing which is noteworthy is that the society will make up the largest portion of the Canadian delegation.

"That's significant in of itself," he said. "You don't normally see that when athletes from the Arctic represent Canada but it's a reflection of living here.

"There are so many great opportunities for athletes to be able to compete at a high level and I think our society reflects that ability to give these members the chance to take part in something like this.

"We're very fortunate to be part of the very first event."

Leading the Way to get underway

Salliq/Coral Harbour After a week's delay, registration for the Leading the Way after-school drop-in program for youth ages 10 to 12 took place earlier this month.

If all went according to plan, the games at the community hall were to begin last week.

"There's a bunch of activities throughout the 10 weeks," said Bobby Akerolik, a supervisor of the Leading the Way program, who took training through the Recreation and Parks Association of Nunavut recently.

Akerolik, who also coaches hockey, described a version of tag called "hotdog" where players who get tagged have to lie on their stomach and the only way they can be freed is to call out, "I need buns." Then two other players have to lie down on either side of the tagged players to get them back in the game.

"Lots of fun and games," he said. "It's just to keep them going and keep them active."

Nunavut will be sending athletes for weeks one and two of the Canada Winter Games in Red Deer, Alta.

The week two contingent, though, will have one group of members that will be doing something completely nonathletic yet vitally important to the Games.

The Nunavut Youth Ambassadors Program will be sending 10 young people to Red Deer – eight of whom hail from the Kivalliq region – to work as volunteers on the ground in various capacities, said Alison Griffin, the program's manager.

"We were lucky that all of them were able to select the role they wanted to do," she said. "We have one who will be part of the mascot crew that will be accompanying the Games mascot around to venues to hand out swag and take photos. We have one who will be helping to sell merchandise, two who will be doing some minor officiating at sports like badminton and one who will be on the

social media squad going out and about doing human interest pieces."

Those who were picked to go took part in a training session in Iqaluit last June, which included a webinar with Games officials, she added.

"They outlined the roles for everyone and what it all entails," she said. "All of our ambassadors got to pick their jobs based on interests."

The work, though, will begin before week two gets underway as the ambassadors will be helping with the turnaround at the athletes village.

"We'll be helping get everything ready and making sure the beds and rooms are in good shape," said Griffin.

"We're also staying around for a couple of days following the completion to help with the tear-down of the village."

The process to pick the group of 10 began last April with the recruitment phase.

Interviews were done over the phone in May followed by the week-long in-person training seminar.

"The training was the first time we met everyone in

person," said Griffin. "We've been in contact with each other through conference calls and I think everyone's just getting excited that the time is getting closer."

In order to be eligible for selection, applicants must be between the ages of 16 and 21, must be a resident of the territory and have two written reference letters.

"We have a scoring rubric associated with the application process," said Griffin.

"The phone interviews were also part of that scoring and the top applicants were chosen."

Griffin and the crew will be flying to Red Deer on Feb. 22 to begin and she said it's been a long road from the start to now but she can't wait to get going.

"It's been an amazing experience so far," she said.

"The buzz is there and you can see it growing all the time. I'm excited for them to get to experience the atmosphere of the Games and Red Deer will be an amazing host. I just hope they take everything in and cherish the opportunity."

I had to read this more than once to make sure it was legit.

The University of Missouri-Kansas City's women's softball team is in some flux right now and it all has to do with its assistant coach, Greg Bachkora. The Kansas City Star published a story on Feb. 10 with players alleging Bachkora was walking into the women's change room, forcing them to duck for cover or hide.

The reason? Bachkora was walking through to use, in his words, the microwave.

There are also reports that Bachkora joked with the players about female genitalia and even kissed some of the players. Those who were caught in Bachkora's alleged sights have all left the team, even though they still have college eligibility.

Bachkora admitted that he kissed the girls, but it was in a non-romantic way, such as on the forehead or the cheek. He also confessed to the joking of genitalia. Here's my issue: if there are enough players with concerns, you would think the school would do something about it.

What you do is remove the coach in question and launch a full investigation. That's the least you do.

The sun has returned to Pond Inlet!

In light of this, Parks Canada staff at Sirmilik National Park organized the third annual Return of the Sun festival.

On Tuesday, Jan. 29, seven people joined three Parks Canada staff for a trip to Sirmilik to celebrate the sun's return. It takes about an hourand-a-half to get to Sirmilik from Pond Inlet, and about

an hour into their trip, the travellers started to see the glow of the sun after months of darkness!

On Bylot Island, they warmed up to a fire, basked in the light of the sun, pitched a Parks Canada tent, and enjoyed fire-cooked hot dogs with refreshments. Celebrations continued in Pond Inlet on Feb. 2. Leo Maktar won the iglu-building contest, earning the first place prize: a round-trip helicopter ride to

Sirmilik National Park in July.

In the evening, about 100 Mittimatalikmiut celebrated at the community hall.

Tasty snacks and refreshments were on hand, with a sun mascot, entertainment, games and a sun-themed piebaking contest. Anisa Suno won first-place honours for her pie and was also awarded a round-trip helicopter ride to Sirmilik this summer.
