Zacharias Kunuk to receive Order of Nunavut Iqaluit Iglulik director Zacharias Kunuk will be this year’s recipient of the Order of Nunavut, Kunuk, a member of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, is co-founder of Igloolik Isuma Productions whose 2001 film Atanarjuat: the Fast Runner earned the Camera d’Or at the 54th Cannes Film Festival. The Journals of Knud Rasmussen, Maliglutit (Searchers) and Exile are among his other films. The ceremony will be held on a date to be determined.

Kaluraq nominated new chair of NIRB Iqaluit Marjorie Kaviq Kaluraq of Baker Lake has been nominated to succeed Elizabeth Copland as chair of the Nunavut Impact Review Board (NIRB), subject to government approval.

Kaluraq, an instructor of the Nunavut Teacher Education Program at Nunavut Arctic College and a 2018-19 Jane Glassco Fellow with the Gordon Foundation, had been serving as the board’s vice-chair and has been with NIRB since 2011.

She was selected for her "strong leadership potential, her history of community engagement and volunteerism, and her inter-

Finance Minister George Hickes expressed confidence that cannabis retail shops in communities will reduce "black market"marijuana sales, but he couldn’t provide a date when retailers will start operations in Nunavut.

The Government of Nunavut has added another online cannabis supplier, Agmedica.

Tweed had been the only authorized source of online marijuana orders for Nunavummiut since marijuana was legalized on Oct. 17.

Finance Minister George Hickes said the GN is still developing terms surrounding the sale of edible marijuana products and licensing cannabis stores in Nunavut communities, but there’s not yet a set date for either.

The Department of Finance has already advised that "sales data from the first few months of legalization suggests government revenues will be modest."

Asked in the legislative assembly on March 8 why sales revenues are below expectations, Hickes replied that "with the suppliers that we have on contract here in Nunavut, (they) haven’t been able to keep up with the demand or the selection that people desire.”

He predicted that having cannabis retailers in communities will help reduce purchases from the "black market"because there will be more immediate access to supply.

Hickes added that an important advantage to legal cannabis is that the contents are regulated, so there are no "additives,"as there may be with street drugs.

The GN advertised for interested parties to submit proposals for cannabis stores last November.

Hickes was also asked whether government support would be available for smaller operators to make the plunge into selling cannabis, with the expectation that the Northern and Co-op may be competitors in retailing cannabis.

"I think it’s an opportunity in communities for either existing small businesses or,"the minister responded, but then paused.

"It’s hard to say, especially when you look at other jurisdictions and the challenges they’ve had with supply, whether it (would) be an

"Again, we are developing the regulations.

I like to think it is an economic development activity the communities could take a look at.”

GN keeps adding positions but vacancies not getting filled The GN has ballooned to 4,888 positions in 2019-2020, up 430 jobs over the past five years, yet the vacancy rate remains around 30 per cent, says Arviat North-Whale Cove MLA John Main.

That equates to approximately 1,475 vacant positions, excluding Qulliq Energy Corporation.

One-third of the government’s total operations and maintenance spending is allocated to compensation and benefits for its workforce, John which amounts to more than Main $500 million in 2019-2020, noted Main on March 8, in his role as chair of the standing committee on oversight of government operations and public accounts.

"It is important for the Financial Management Board to be mindful of the need to control the growth in the number of government positions being added to organizational charts at a time when departments, Crown agencies, and territorial corporations continue to face significant challenges in filling their existing vacancies, and roughly one-quarter to one-

third of the government’s existing positions remain vacant,"Main said.

He added that the GN recently revealed that overtime costs for staff added up to more than $28.1 million in 2016-17.

"It is not unreasonable to conclude that the high vacancy rate for the government’s existing positions has contributed to this spending,"said Main.

‘Everything is open with regard to tax options,’ says Hickes as review begins The Government of Nunavut is assessing its tax system and all options are open, according to Finance Minister George Hickes.

"You look at our corporate taxes, it has come up in the past that our small business tax is higher than some other jurisdictions. Do we leave at that?

"Do you reduce it to try and stimulate more economic activity?" Hickes said in the legislative assembly on March 8.

"It’s weighing different levels of our taxation system along those lines. Other jurisdictions have an alcohol tax, we do not. Everything is open with regard to tax options available to us.”

Hickes confirmed that a retail sales tax is another option his staff is considering in its review that will continue into 2020.

Iqaluit-Manirajak MLA Adam Lightstone recommended that the GN look at a sugar tax, or a tax on sugary drinks like pop "to encourage people to adopt a more nutritious healthy lifestyle.”

Hickes replied that it, too, could be considered but said some Nunavummiut have shown a willingness to pay $5 per can or bottle of pop, so price isn’t necessarily a deterrent.

Lightstone fired back that the GN has used that same rationale to repeatedly raise cigarette taxes so it should be applicable to sugary drinks as well.

Women learn to make puhitaqs or 'sunbursts' like their mothers crafted

A dozen women recently gathered at the Cambridge Bay Elders' Palace to reclaim a Kitikmeot Inuit tradition of making wolf-fur coverings that go around the wearer's face, and it was an emotional experience.

Karen Kamoayok, one of the workshop participants, said her mother used to craft puhitaqs, an Inuinnaqtun word meaning "sunburst."

"A lot of memories of my mother came back," Kamoayok said. "I had no patience at all to watch her sew, so that made me feel bad.

Now that she's gone I had to learn it from other people. That was amazing and, at the same time, it sure touched my heart."

Clara Evalik, who organized the workshop, also used to watch her mom meticulously fashion puhitaqs, but she never picked up the skills back then. Figuring it's not too late, Evalik organized the Feb. 27 to March 2 workshop, sponsored by the Kitikmeot Inuit Association.

"I knew that if I wanted to learn, I'm sure there were many other women that wanted to learn," she said, recounting that she found her mom's supply of fur in a bag after her mom moved into a care centre.

"It had all these strips already cut out, ready to be prepared for a sunburst," said Evalik. "To me, it was a sign that I really have to have a workshop such as this."

Instructor Agnes Panioyak travelled from Kugluktuk, and a couple of other participants came from Inuvik.

product we had never made it before so it was an emotional healing journey for a lot of us," Evalik said.

"At the end, we were able to create a product that we always wanted to make. The pride in the culture and tradition was so obvious throughout the whole week."

It took almost nine months to acquire the wolf skins from hunters in Cambridge Bay and Kugluktuk.

Pelts were needed from wolves harvested between fall and winter because the fur had to be thick and not from a period when the animals were shedding, Evalik explained.

Many narrow strips of wolf hide are affixed to a canvas, creating a circular garment with a hole for the face. The puhitaq attaches to a parka hood, acting as a wind break and providing the wearer greater warmth.

"It's such a delicate craft," said Evalik.

For that reason she had to choose experienced seamstresses while numerous others who wanted to take part in the workshop weren't accepted because there weren't enough hides.

Evalik's hopeful there will be similar workshops in the future, however.

"People are so interested in what we have done. I hope we continue to do more projects like this," she said. "We live a modern way of life but we love our culture and traditions as well."

Kamoayok said taking part in the event made her realize how much work her mother did for her over the years, repeatedly making new parkas and puhitaqs.

"I'm going to try to keep it going and teach my girls how to do them," she said.

Cambridge Bay seeks new rink Hamlet wants recreation complex, not more fixes to existing facility

After a year and a half, the Cambridge Bay arena was finally given clearance to reopen on March 13.

Even so, the Hamlet of Cambridge Bay is determined to build a new recreation complex rather than investing in more fixes to the aging and dilapidated arena.

The recreational facility was expected to be accessible again in October, after contractor Qillaq Construction completed what was then a $257,000 contract issued by the Department of Community and Government Services (CGS).

However, mould problems were worse than anticipated and numerous other issues exist, said Jim MacEachern, assistant senior administrative officer.

"They had to basically tear down the Zaboni room and a few different areas in the building, so then it was (a matter of) rebuilding those areas,"said MacEachern, who added that residents have shown patience throughout this ordeal.

"There’s (still) structural issues.

The whole front section, which is where the lobby is and the change rooms, the office and the skate-sharpening room, essentially that would have to be

torn off and then rebuilt.

"We don’t believe that’s the best way to spend the money. We think putting it toward a new facility is definitely the way to go."

The curling rink, lounge, canteen area and the former hamlet offices and council chambers upstairs remain off limits to the public due to remaining mould.

The Hamlet has heard estimates ranging from $6 million to $12 million to completely overhaul the building, said MacEachern.

He said he didn’t know how much the mould removal done over the past several months wound up costing. CGS didn’t respond to questions from Nunavut News prior to deadline.

The federal government had designated $4.2 million for arena renovations in 2015.

Senior administrative officer Marla Limousin previously pegged the cost of a new recreation complex at $20 million to $30 million.

MacEachern said one option would be to build a new arena and gradually construct additions to create a multi-use facility over years.

Another limitation of the existing rink is the sand floor. It means the facility is only usable during the winter when the ice is in place because indoor sports like soccer and basket-

Although the Cambridge Bay arena is reopening to the public after a year and a half, the Hamlet of Cambridge Bay doesn’t want the rest of the building fixed for an estimated $6 million to $12 million. nament from April 4 to 7.

"It’s been far too long that it’s been closed,"Mayor Pamela Gross said of the arena. "There’s been a lot of anticipation ... we’re excited for residents to get back out on the ice and use the facility."

Natasha Komakjuak decided to give birth to her third child in her home community of Arviat.

"I didn't want to leave my two younger ones, my fouryear-old daughter and my son who was three. I didn't want to lose them for a long time, for three weeks," she said.

"I refused to leave. I refused to get on the plane. I made the choice of just staying here and hiding."

Komakjuak remained at the health centre for two to three hours after Ryley's birth, at which point she was discharged and went home with her family.

That was in January 2007.

Shirley Tagalik of Arviat's Aqqiumavvik Society explains the community has been working on getting a birthing centre for years, most recently with a 2017 Arviat Birthing Centre Proposal submitted to the Government of Nunavut, as well as to the feds.

"Years," she repeats.

"When we first formed the health committee, I think it was in 1980, this was our burning issue, to get a birthing centre for our community."

Tagalik says women in the community were surveyed and 87 per cent would choose to give birth in their home community. Arviat currently sees

approximately 60 to 70 births annually for an estimated population of 2,850.

The comprehensive 87-page Aqqiumavvik proposal has been with the Health Department since early 2018.

"The Department of Health requires sufficient time to review the proposal, as well as review and evaluate existing maternal newborn services in Nunavut. Once the department completes the review, Health will provide a response to the society," stated territorial coordinator of maternal newborn health services Carol Griffin by e-mail.

Griffin says there were 897 live births in 2017. In the last 10 years, 9,480 babies were born to Nunavut women.

"Approximately 50 per cent of these babies were born in the territory while the other half are born in southern hospitals," she said.

"Birthing services for low risk women are available in Rankin Inlet and Cambridge Bay birthing centres and Qikiqtani General Hospital.

Plans to expand maternal services in the future are currently under review."

"When I was the Minister of Health, I made inquiries into how as a department we can push this area more. I met with various stakeholders over the matter and spoke with midwives in and out of the system," she said.

"It seemed there were a lot

of people who support such a move and I'm hoping that the department will go forward in this area. I would like to see the Nunavut Arctic College provide training and certify Nunavummiut wanting to become midwives."

Angnakak says midwifery in communities is a great

opportunity to intertwine the cultural side (Inuit Qaujimajatuqangit) of midwifery with today's way of delivering babies. Amittuq MLA Joelie Kaernerk is of the same mind, and has been a vocal proponent of community birthing since the people of Hall Beach and Iglulik elected him in late 2017.

"It would have a positive impact for women," he told Nunavut News.

Though federal funding for escorts for pregnant mums is welcome, removing Inuit from communities for health care is a stubborn holdover of colonial health policies and practices.

"Couples can travel now, but they have to leave their children and loved ones behind. And they're gone for a good one, two, three months at a time, and their children are left behind, taken care of by … I don't know, their sister or their grandma. It would really help the families to be in the community. They could go to the health centre, where an Inuk woman is helping them."

Kaernerk says community birthing would also help alleviate overcrowding in medical boarding homes and would create employment in the community A common point, made

being spent in the community rather than on the big budget for sending pregnant women away from home for weeks on end.

"In my opinion, the closer to home we can offer maternal health services, the better.

More accessible and convenient for families, and cheaper for the government," he stated by e-mail.

"Like many aspects of health care in Nunavut, the Health Department's staffing capacity will be a key challenge in trying to provide better maternal health services."

But Tagalik says, at one point, 12 community members were interested in taking midwifery training, and that Nunavut Arctic College refused to work with the health committee to make the training accessible locally.

The Health Department's Griffin says there are currently five midwives working in the territory.

"Three are Inuit midwives who obtained their education and training in the territory.

There are vacant midwifery positions that are currently being filled by casual midwives. At this time, there is no active midwifery education program, however, the goal is continue to strengthen and support the existing midwifery workforce," Griffin said.

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s apology to Inuit March 8 acknowledges the human rights abuses visited upon Inuit Nunangat during the tuberculosis epidemic between the 1940s and 60s.

Inuit were unceremoniously ripped from their homes once screened, without consent, as positive for TB. One of the horrors, and not the least, was the federal government’s practice of burying those who died in carelessly marked graves near the many racially segregated sanatoriums throughout southern Canada. Finding loved ones’ graves, and some measure of peace, within this nightmare has largely been left to still-mourning Inuit families.

The Nanilavut (let’s find them) Initiative, officially announced with our nation’s apology, will finally help the many Inuit who continue to search for lost loved ones – with a comprehensive, multi-sourced database, some funding, dedicated staff, and other offerings.

It is for each affected Inuk to weigh the value of Trudeau’s apology, and determine how useful Nanilavut will prove to be.

Help one person at a time Northern News Services

Several times I have come across the term "In the best interest of"and I have wondered why we say this? This seems to refer to the IQ Principles and in particular the second one that states, fostering good spirits by being open, welcoming and inclusive. Perhaps we should be thinking along this line as we engage in our daily activities?

Our social fiber is such that the little ones are usually at the end of the spectrum of inclusiveness because they are small, they don’t think properly, they don’t understand and they are the cause of our problems. This in fact is the projection of the adults who are always looking for an escape or to place the blame of our shallow thinking on someone else and guess who this is?

The society naturally goes with the flow and if matters are speeding ahead then our

actions and reactions need to find its path. If we are caught up with personal issues that have not really been dealt with in any depth, we look for ways to try and show the world that we are strong and in control while everything is falling apart. We are so quick to point the finger and to blame everyone else except ourselves.

If we want to be open, welcoming and inclusive, we need to stop and think before we speak, we need to put our agendas aside and consider those around us, we need to put self aside and act in the best interest of others. If this means you end up at the end of the line-up then so be it, if you find yourself handing over the last loaf of bread on the shelf then give it with a smile. If someone has a large box of groceries outside the store then offer them a ride and so on.

Four Corners graces new phone directory

Iqaluit The 2019/2020 Northwestel directory features the work of Inuk artist Dayle Kubluitok, who won the cover art contest the telephone company stages each year.

"I basically do all my art on my phone. At the time, I was waiting for a cab at the bank, so I sketched out the landscape on my phone. The northern lights were out, and I just started off with the lamppost because I thought it looked really neat. Later that night I decided to finish it while hanging out with my friends," stated Kubluitok, who is originally from Rankin Inlet.

The young artist attended art school at Centennial College in Toronto but returned to Nunavut due to the high cost of education, stated a news release. Kubluitok, who now lives in the capital, is seeing her art career take off – she's receiving commission requests – and she just starting her new job as a graphic designer at Nunavut Arctic College.

"After I posted Four Corners to Facebook, it kinda blew up.

Then when I found I won, I was overwhelmed. I feel really confident now and I've been doing more and more art. I started getting requests for graphic design and illustration and I did some back covers of magazines. It's all been hard work, but I’m happy where I’m at right now," said Kubluitok.

Kubluitok also takes home $3,000.

"With more than 30 years worth of beautiful Northern artwork adorning the covers of Northwestel directories, it is hard to stand out in the crowd, but Four Corners does," stated Northwestel president Curtis Shaw.

"Dayle's digital rendering of this well-known Iqaluit location shows how the next generation of Northern artists can use new technology to effectively capture our unique northern landscape.

Team revives Qikiqtaaluk regional science fair, needs help

Qikiqtaaluk The Baffin region has been without a science fair for 20 years, but a team has formed and is now raising funds to hold one this year.

Canada-Wide Science Fair. The path of least resistance, and most economical since we have no money, is by hosting a virtual fair," said Inuksuk High School teacher Steve Penney, who with Iqaluit's Tara Vandeveer and Rick Armstrong and Clyde River's Wayne Robinson and Rohan Hollingsworth now make up the Qikiqtaalummi Science Fair Association.

"All schools in the Qikiqtaaluk Region are invited to participate. We won't know exact numbers of participants until all submissions are received on March 22. Each school, Grade 7 to 12, is permitted to submit three science fair projects to the regional fair."

Students and teachers interested in submitting projects should contact the science-fair team at qsfnunavut@gmail.com For those wanting to donate to make this opportunity possible for science-minded youth of the region, donations are being accepted at the group's Go Fund Me page.

Penney says $10,000 is the minimum amount the team needs to send participants to the national fair.

"If we raise anything more than that, we may be able to get team jackets or save for next year to build some stability in our association," he said. "If we end up getting major funding contributions, we may be able to start hosting a physical regional fair in the future whereby all participants travel to the host community to spend a weekend at a science fair event where they will not only compete in the science fair but also participate in a series of workshops for learning about science through hands-on experi-

ences. This is the model currently used in the Kivalliq region via Kivalliq Science Educators Community.

Trying to repair church

Uqsuqtuuq/Gjoa Haven The Anglican church in Gjoa Haven is in need of further repair and Leroy Nakoolak is trying to raise $5,000 for the cause.

Nakoolak and several other parishoners combined periodic efforts over four months to install new drywall. However, the work is isn’t done. More drywall is required, a hole in the roof has to be fixed and new flooring is needed, said Nakoolak.

"We are not contractors but some of us had experience with drywalling and we had worked in some cabins... and there was also ladies cleaning in the church,"he said of the volunteer corps.

The church, built in the mid-1960s, has a regular congregation of close to 30 people who attend weekly services, either on Wednesday evenings or Sunday mornings or evenings, he said.

Nakoolak has posted on social media asking for help, including from Yellowknife residents since he’ll be making a trip there later this month and will be able to pick up donated items.

Hamlet takes over water plant

Iglulik The Hamlet of Igloolik has negotiated with the GN to take over operations of the community’s water plant, resulting in three jobs being transferred to the hamlet, said Greg Morash, the municipality’s senior administrative officer.

The plant, which is newly built and went into service last year, was previously being run by a contractor. The hamlet’s water plant employees will need some additional training, but they municipality has access to an experienced operator who will be overseeing the transition, said Morash.

"They know how to treat the chlorine. They know how to clean the filters,"he said of the hamlet workers.

"They had an injection problem and the (supervisor) just stood there and said, ‘OK guys, what do you do?’ And they cleaned it up and made it run again, so that was good."

Most hamlets in Nunavut run their own water plants, Morash noted, adding that regulations have become much more complicated over the years.

Water delivery woes

Ikaluktutiak/Cambridge Bay Some residents in Cambridge Bay have been complaining on social media of waiting for water delivery, sometimes up to a few days.

Mayor Pamela Gross said the hamlet is hopefully through the worst of the problem now that repairs have been made to one of the water trucks, meaning there are now two of them on the road instead of just one. In addition, the hamlet has invited residents interested in driving service vehicles to apply for jobs.

Sewage pump outs and garbage pickup have been hampered by the lack of new trucks, said Gross. Those new vehicles were ordered on last year’s sealift but weren’t delivered because ice prevented the final barge of the season from arriving.

"It’s always an ongoing issue. It’s one that we really want to get fixed,"Gross said of truck service calls to residences and businesses, adding that an additional water tanker is among the items on order for sealift in 2019.

Victoria Kakuktinniq, founder and designer of Victoria’s Arctic Fashion (VAF), took her fashion skills to a whole other level when she brought her exquisite creations to Paris Fashion Week Feb. 25 to March 5 Spring in the Arctic inspired her collection of 24 pieces for two shows: Flying Solo, as well as the International Indigenous Fashion Week’s Paris offering "We see colours of cotton-candy pink, hues of gold, teal, and purple beadwork and accents with pops of white, all representing the reflection of the sky on water, the remaining bright white snow in contrast to the land during the spring melt, and the beautiful sunsets/sunrises that last for hours in the spring months," stated Kakuktinniq by email.

For the young designer, originally of Rankin Inlet, with her own store in Iqaluit, the most rewarding aspect of taking part in the iconic Paris runway shows was the excitement generated back home.

"I believe it is so important for young Inuit to see other Inuit succeeding on international platforms,"she said, adding striving for what may seem unachievable is her mes-

While Kakuktinniq shed many tears of happiness during her time in Paris, one challenging episode wasn’t so happy. She says her garments are typically made for the average woman and she did fully expect smaller models.

"But when we showed up on fitting day all of the garments basically hung off the models, they were all way too big. I’m talking handfuls of material.”

Despite another designer telling her she and her team could not pull off the adjustments for the next day, by 5 a.m. the job was done.

"I felt very proud when every garment worked perfectly,"she said.

"We succeeded and the response has been overwhelming. I couldn’t have done it without the support of my friends and family back home, the collaborators who provided accessories that really pulled together all of the looks, and my on location support team – Lori Tagoona, Jennifer Lane and Mariana Barney.”

Great news for Cambridge Bay! The arena is now ready to re-open and renovations are now complete and final inspections passed.

Without an arena, there have been many hockey players -- both youth and adult -- waiting for the day it will open after being shutdown due to mould in the building. Since it is kind of late in the season hockey leagues may reschedule, but I hear there is a Senior Hockey Tournament being planned where teams from throughout the Kitikmeot will compete sometime in April.

Our minor hockey players may reschedule their season till next fall, but there may be plans being put in place, please stay tuned to what the minor hockey league is planning.

With ice time usually school students from Kullik Ilihakvik hold their gym classes at the arena skating.

With 2019 being the year of indigenous languages, Cambridge Bay’s Kitikmeot Campus of the Nunavut Arctic College, there have been Inuinnaqtut language courses going on through the University of Victoria. Instructor Emily Angulalik has been instructing these

language courses and there are students from throughout the Kitikmeot Region.

So much good positive learning happening at the campus here in Cambridge Bay. Congratulations to all those individuals who have enrolled in these language courses and a big Quana to Emily who works so professionally delivering this.

Learning and reading about what other indigenous people around the world hold or revitalize their language is very interesting. I encourage anyone to register in these courses.

Before the start of the inaugural Chan Hun International Taekwondo Federation World Championships in Melbourne, Australia, Pat McDermott, president of the Iqaluit Taekwondo Society, was simply hoping his team would be able to match up well with the rest of the world.

It would seem they matched up just fine.

The team of eight that made the trip down under came home with eight medals from the competition that wrapped up on March 10.

Among them are two double-medallists: Eileen

Duffy, who scored herself two gold medals in sparring and poomse (forms) in her division, while Daniella Calamayan won a gold in poomse and a silver in sparring.

"I couldn’t be more proud of this team,"said McDermott.

"It’s a great testament to the programming we have here in Iqaluit and also to our instructors. Maryse Mahy and Matthew Smallacombe deserve a bunch of recognition for all of the time and effort they’ve given to help the team prepare.”

Senior curlers ready for action

Chilliwack, B.C. The Canadian Seniors Curling Championships are coming up in Chilliwack, B.C., and Nunavut will have both a men’s and women’s team on the ice.

Everything kicks off on March 22 with both rinks hailing from the Iqaluit Curling Club. The men’s rink will be almost an exact copy of the one that played at the Tim Hortons Brier in Brandon, Man., earlier this month as Peter Mackey, Lloyd

The Iqaluit team was part of a broader Team Canada, which was one of 28 countries competing in Melbourne.

Overall as a group, Canada was second in the medal count with 43 altogether. If you’re doing the math, Iqaluit’s contribution made up close to one-fifth of the total count.

"Australia had the most, of course, and that’s all because they didn’t have to worry about travel like we all did from Canada,"said Pat McDermott. "But we still had a great showing and this is

something to be proud of. It was an outstanding showing for Canada and for us as a society.”

Each of the team members fought in divisions based on gender, belt colour, age and weight class. Nick McDermott, who’s a firstdegree black belt, won his bronze medal in the male 14-17 69-kg black belt category and said he was a bit nervous before heading into the competition.

"Usually, we just travel to Ottawa to compete,"he said.

"This tournament had a lot of countries competing and lots of teams so I was a bit nervous. I didn’t know what to expect or what would hap-

2020 Arctic Winter Games song released

Nunavut The theme song for the 2020 Arctic Winter Games in Whitehorse is now out and there’s a Nunavut connection to it.

Bring it North was released on March 13 on YouTube and features the throat-singing talents of Rita Mike-Murphy of Iqaluit and Kathleen Merritt of Rankin Inlet, known profes-

One difference he did notice about some of his competitors was how they did certain things in warm-up and in competition.

"They do things a bit differently than we do in practice and they breathe at different times,"he said.

"That was something I hadn’t seen before.”

Overall, the experience was a humbling one for McDermott as he said being in a black belt division is a huge step up.

"I was a coloured belt last year so everything is tougher,"he said. "The person who beat me did so rather eas-

ily but then he got beat rather easily by his next opponent.

In addition to the individual accolades, the society received a group honour as it was named the most outstanding team at the tournament.

Pat McDermott said the award will be presented to the society during a training and grading session on the weekend of March 23 and 24. Marcus Ma of Lu’s Taekwondo in Ottawa will be in town that weekend and will have the trophy with him.

"Out of the many clubs that made the trip to Australia, that’s saying something,"said McDermott.

Playoffs get underway

Iqaluit The Iqaluit Hockey League is officially in playoff mode.

Everything got underway at the Arctic Winter Games Arena on March 17 with RL Hanson taking on Canadrill in one playoff series while the Iqaluit Herd did battle with the Legion in game one of their playoff series.

Game 2 for each of the series will happen on March 19 when the Legion and Iqaluit Herd face off while Canadrill and RL Hanson will play their second contest on March 21.

If necessary, Game 3 of the Legion-Iqaluit Herd series will be on March 21 while Game 3 for the Canadrill-RL Hanson series is set for March 24.

A&K best KIA to claim crown Goalie issues main challenge as Rankin hockey league moves forward

No matter the level of hockey, there is no better feeling than to win a game in sudden-death overtime.

Flip the script and losing in sudden-death overtime is the worst feeling in the world.

Craig Aglukark scored 1:24 into the first overtime period to give A&K a 5-4 win over the KIA to take the Rankin Inlet Senior Men’s Hockey League championship three games to two earlier this month.

The championship series was a hard-fought affair, with four of the five games decided by a single goal and three needing overtime to determine the outcome.

A&K captain David Clark said it was challenging and a lot of fun to be involved in such a tight championship series.

He said both teams had good benches for the series, keeping the action fast and tight.

"They were having some goalie issues in the final series because of everyone travelling so much and guys working at the mine, which can make things a little more difficult at times, but that’s just part of life now,"said Clark.

"Pretty much every team will have to deal with those issues at some point in the season.”

Clark said, overall, he thought this past season went fairly well for the league.

He said the biggest issue the circuit faces moving forward is the shortage of senior-aged goalies in Rankin Inlet.

"We’re struggling with goalies and there’s really not much we can do about that right now.

"But, hopefully, when a couple of the younger goalies out there come back to the community it will help our league.”

The league operated with four teams this year captained by Clark, Lee Kreelak, Craig Beardsall and Graham (Bubsy) Kusugak.

Clark said four teams (A&K, KIA, M&T and Kativik) was the right fit for the league this season and, as it stands now, that’s the plan again for next season.

He said the excitement generated by the opening of Rankin’s new arena in the coming year, however, might lead to an increase in player registration for the league but, if that were to happen, the executive committee would deal with the situation at the time.

"Looking at the standings in the regular season (only seven points separated first place A&K from fourth place Kativik), this was definitely one of our most well-balanced seasons in the past few years.

"Every team in the league went on a bit of a winning streak at different times throughout the season and that was nice to see happen in the league.”

This year also marked the first time in recent memory a defenceman took the scoring title in Rankin’s senior league, with Kativik’s Panniuq Karetak (33-37-70) nipping M&T’s Alfred Voisey (32-37-69) by a single point and Clark (33-31-64) – who played five fewer games than Karetak and Voisey – by six to claim the scoring crown.

"I don’t know if a defenceman ever won the scoring crown in our league before.

"Panniuq plays a free-wheeling style that sees him join or lead the rush a number of times throughout a game."

Clark said, all in all, it was a positive year for the senior league.

He said it’s important for players in the community to have a competitive league that’s fun to play in.

"It’s a competitive league with good hockey but it’s also fun and, at the end of the day, we all want to play in a fun league.

"You also can’t lose sight of the fact the league has been around a

long time now and it continues to grow.

"Hopefully, we’ll soon have some younger guys involved in the league step up and start to do more to help keep it going and running smoothly because some of us older guys have been doing it a long time and we’re getting a little tired of running the league every year.”

So food at the ball park is always interesting. The Texas Rangers, though, are planning on making a splash this coming season with something I want to get my hands on. It’s the Fowl Pole. Yes, it has to do with chicken.

Anyway, it’s a two-pound breaded chicken tender, served on a bed of waffle fries, with ranch and honey mustard dipping sauces.

The cost? $27.50. If you thought the Meat Mountain sandwich at Arby’s was the meal for people who just didn’t care about life anymore, the Texas Rangers will give Arby’s a run for its money.

I don’t care what people say – this chicken tender makes a regular chicken tender basket look awfully ordinary. Because I’m me, I would make sure I was standing next to someone who ordered the regular chicken tender basket and gloat: "Mine’s bigger than yours.”

And then take a gigantic bite out of it for full effect. I would also make sure I had a defibrillator on hand and my last will and testament signed and sealed because there’s a very good chance my heart rate would end
