'Always welcome at our fire house' Assistance from Pangnirtung and Cape Dorset firefighters forged a bond with Iqaluit brethren during NorthMart blaze

When the Iqaluit NorthMart warehouse went up in flames in November, threatening the adjoining store, it taxed the full resources of the Iqaluit Fire Department to control of the intense blaze.

Nunavut Emergency Management, a branch of the GN, made inquiries to other communities to determine if help was available.

Pangnirtung and Cape Dorset answered those calls.

Pangnirtung sent eight firefighters, Cape Dorset spared six.

Mathew Nauyuq was one of the Pangnirtung firefighters whose pager sounded the morning of Nov. 8. He learned that Iqaluit's fire department needed relief and he was willing to go, but thoughts of his family and his fellow firefighters permeated his mind.

"It makes me nervous at times not knowing what we are getting into. When I am going out the door, I want to come back home to my wife, nine-year-old daughter and two-year-old son," Nauyuq said. "I also worry about the safety of each firefighter who are responding, hoping they also make it back home to their family – as well worry about the safety of the public."

Despite those uncertainties, he and his seven colleagues boarded a plane at 11 a.m. As they approached Iqaluit, they could see the smoke and flames from the air, giving them a real-life view of what some of them had watched on social media hours earlier.

"We had an idea of what we were going into," said Nauyuq.

After a meal, a briefing and quick introductions to various Iqaluit emergency personnel, they headed to the scene along Queen Elizabeth Way. They rotated positions on one of the hoses from mid-afternoon through mid-evening, spray-

"By the time we got there, most of the big fire was already out," said Nauyuq.

"We often said amongst each other that Iqaluit firefighters did an amazing job in putting out that pretty big fire ... they were able to save the store."

Cape Dorset's fire crew took over during the night.

After some rest, Nauyuq returned to the scene to monitor hot-spots.

Nelson Johnson, Iqaluit's acting director of emergency and protective services, was in

command of the scene, guiding the 15 other members of his force and then providing direction to the 14 visiting firefighters as well as another five helping hands through the Office of the Fire Marshal.

'Very grateful' Johnson noted that his department not only "did an excellent job" of containing the NorthMart warehouse fire, but also responded to five other emergency calls throughout the city as vehicle fires and a garbage can burned that night.

"We were very grateful to receive help from Cape

Dorset and Pangnirtung.

This allowed the Iqaluit Fire Department to rest their members and to provide coverage for the rest of the city," Johnson stated. "We are grateful and proud of the territory of Nunavut and thankful for the volunteers that came to assist us. They will always be welcome at our fire house."

Iqaluit's firefighters were "good role models," said Nauyuq. Nunavut Emergency Management's staff was topnotch and "they looked after us really, really well," he added.

travelled to Iqaluit, said he was impressed by the coordination during the ordeal.

"Their chief handled the whole situation perfectly," said Adla. "I can't say enough about those guys."

For Nauyuq, who's in his early 30s and only joined the Pangnirtung Fire Department in March, he'd never had any experience tackling a blaze in such a large building.

"I'm fairly new," he said, adding that he became inspired to join the fire brigade after getting extremely sick and being admitted to the hospital in Iqaluit. "There were some regrets and one

of them was, am I too late to become a volunteer firefighter?"

Following the NorthMart fire, the volunteers received a certificate of appreciation from Nunavut Emergency Management and lots of praise via social media.

"Our expectations are not so much to receive thank yous, but to have a community and a department that's able to provide a service to the community ... (and) other communities," Nauyuq said.

"One day we may find ourselves in the same situation here in Pang and we may request assistance."

Corrections staff help inmates stay connected during holiday season Inmates donate $10,000 to Iqaluit men's shelter

Family, sharing country food, Christmas games, giving back to the community – these are the thoughts about Christmas that the men at Nunavut's correctional facilities have in common with fellow Nunavummiut.

"We've got it decorated for the guys. It's a family-oriented place over the holidays because it's a tough time for the guys," said warden Scott Blank, who oversees men at Uttaqivik in Iqaluit, one of three community residential centres in the territory.

Here the men work during the day and observe an evening curfew – it's a work-release program, also known as a halfway house. The end is in sight, unlike for most men at the Makigiarvik Correctional Centre, the minimum-security brother to the medium- and maximum-security Baffin Correctional Centre (BCC).

At Makigiarvik most of the men are in remand, with their fates waiting on the long court process.

"There's a lot of unknowns for them. They don't know when they're going home.

"They can't begin to plan for it," said BCC/Makigiarvik warden Michael Warren.

The facility holds an elders' appreciation feast, where staff and inmates prepare country food and other treats and serve the Elders. During the holiday season, inmates can participate in tournaments and play traditional Inuit games and other recreational games, receive additional phone time to talk with friends and family and choose to attend a Christmas Eve church service onsite.

As a group, the incarcerated men at Iqaluit's facilities have taken an unprecedented step – a large donation to the men's shelter in the capital.

The facilities share a welfare account, made up of profits from the canteen, a percentage of monies earned by inmate carvers and all monies earned by the town crew contract with the City of Iqaluit and soon a contract with Community and Government Services. Inmates and residents make up two committees which decide how the funds in the welfare account will be used.

"They're giving a $10,000 donation to the Iqaluit men's shelter this year. They just voted on that. That's the first time we've done that here," said Warren.

"It's nice to see these guys thinking about the community. It's them giving back during Christmas-time. People in need, they want to give back.

"Also, being realistic, a lot of our guys depend on that shelter."

Jordan Levi, who is in remand at Makigiarvik and is from Arctic Bay, says Christmas means family.

"We go to one house, to eat, gathering family," said Levi, adding he doesn't feel much connected to his family right now and being from another community makes it hard.

It's even harder, because contact with his mother, who is away on medical travel, isn't regular – though he says he calls his cousins.

"I'm just waiting for my mother to get back to Arctic Bay," Levi said.

This is not Levi's first Christmas in custody and in the past he's taken part in Christmas games organized by the facility. He says that helps a bit to get through Christmas.

More connection to tradition and culture Blank says residents come to Uttaqivik from both territorial and federal facilities to complete their sentences.

The men pay for their room

and board from their earnings, which goes into the welfare account.

Joe (not his real name), who is from another community, is now a resident at Uttaqivik.

He's served federal time in the south for a serious crime and can now see the end of his sentence. He maintains contact with family by phone.

This will be his fourth and final Christmas in the system.

The first two were in the south at a federal penitentiary and the third was at BCC/Makigiarvik.

Being far away from home, in the south, was hard emotionally.

"There was no access to traditional Christmas I know from before – church, Christmas dinner with friends and family, games and events. And the sound of the accordion is always Christmasy for me. It was very emotional, thinking of friends and family, thinking about what they were doing."

These days, he's busy with work. He gets emotional looking at the decorations and Christmas tree his fellow Uttaqivik residents have put up. He wishes he could be with family.

He takes one day at a time and says it's better than at the other institutions. He speaks on the phone with a brother, an aunt and a friend and he says that helps. While there are normally Christmas games in Iqaluit during the holidays, Joe says he'd only go if someone accompanied him for support.

Joe is still considering whether he will return home or stay in Iqaluit when freed, but whatever he decides – if he stays on track – this will be his final Christmas in custody.

Joe says being close to his culture makes a difference and he wishes more elders were involved with correctional facilities generally.

"That would make it easier. And elders that share the purpose of Christmas. There might be more connection to tradition and culture," said Joe. Christmas is about love Matthew Allurut, also a resident at Uttaqivik, says this is his first Christmas away from family.

"The life I've lived wasn't as I thought it would be growing up. I've just learned to accept my life as it is. In order for you to get through it, you have to accept it. A lot of people can't accept the way things work, they want things in their idea. But it's not how it works," he said.

For him, Christmas is about "giving love to each other, getting together and showing love to one another, gifts to show they care. Everybody's just happy – it makes me happy,

"Even just feeling it, you feel inspired to love again.

"Being with family is important."

Allurut says inmates who work to understand themselves and why they are in jail are more able to get through and try to stay positive. And that's what he's doing.

"At the same time, it is depressing."

But he's staying focused.

He stays in contact with family by phone, though sometimes there isn't much to say. When he does call, he feels happy.

Recently he had family visit from his community.

That also made him happy.

"But I know I have to do this – working on myself is more important right now, before I go. My family will

still be my family no matter what. Nothing will change that. If I change myself for the better ... At some point in life you have to decide whether to take control of it.

"It's about getting to know yourself and how you feel, what made you feel like that," he said. "Being in jail helped me see that people just react instead of trying to understand why. Just reacting is not at all a good thing."

If Allurut stays on track, he will be with family next Christmas.

Blank, recognizing how difficult the season is, does what he can at Uttaqivik during Christmas.

"From the welfare account, what we've got here are (gift) bags, all ready for our guys," he said. "There's a Christmas

card that we give, we bought them each a little present."

"My first Christmas here, some of these guys didn't have a gift," said Blank. "I got them, also, a $200 gift certificate at Ventures, so they can use it upstairs at The Source, or downstairs."

He added that often can help a resident give a gift to their child or loved one.

Staff at Uttaqivik also take a 12 days of Christmas approach, with daily gifts of pop, chips and chocolate.

"Then we have a huge turkey dinner with the guys. We eat as one big family. And if their family is actually in town, like at the boarding home, we don't shy away. We ensure that they bring them," though staff also ensure there aren't any no-contact orders.

Workshop explores youth perspectives Maani Ulujuk students write and record four songs, star in video on colonial history and Inuit culture

In a darkened makeshift recording studio at Maani Ulujuk Ilinniarvik, four groups of students from Grades 7 and 8 recorded songs they wrote themselves.

Twenty-eight students participated.

The four songs – developed in conjunction with a group of Indigenous and non-Indigenous songwriters, producers and art educators called Darkspark, under the umbrella of their Four Directions project – are melded into one video shot during a two-week span in November and December.

The video opens with the Elder involved with the project, Quluaq Pilakapsi.

"I have something in my heart that is bothering me. If I don't say it to anybody, they won't know me. If I don't say I need help, nobody will be there for me. Only if I express my needs will someone help me," she says.

"I thank you for coming here.

By sharing knowledge, we can help each other."

Artist Terrie Kusugak was also part of the project.

"Inuit are not a people of Elders anymore – we're a people of youth.

Last year in Arviat there were 105 kids being enrolled in the kindergarten. We're stuck between wanting to be true to our culture, but also growing into the future," says Kusugak in the video.

"Inuit have always adapted and I'm sure we'll adapt again."

But the bulk of the video shows scenes from inside and outside the school, featuring the students, their thoughts, their songs and their considerable talents.

Council Canada, met members of Darkspark on a Students on Ice expedition, where they were leading similar workshops with students.

Ilitaqsiniq Nunavut Literacy Council came on board to help with funding.

Mel Larkin, one of Darkspark's co-founders, explains the group's

mandate is harnessing the power of pop music in order to empower youth to create social change.

"The Four Directions project came in 2014 on the Tyendinaga Mohawk territory, which is in Ontario, close to where myself and the other co-founder live," said Larkin.

ᕌᐳᑦ ᐃᓄᒃᓱᒃ ᑲᒪᒋᔭᖃᖅᐳᖅ ᐋᖅᑭᒃᓱᐃᓂᐅᔪᒥ ᓵᖓᓂ ᐱᓕᕆᔨᒻᒪᕆᐊᓗᒃᑎᑐᑦ.

Robert Innukshuk handles the mixing board like a professional.

They did a month-long workshop there in songwriting and recording, where the youth decided they wanted to tackle Canadian history from their perspective.

"And talk about the ways that colonization had really impacted them and their families and their communities," Larkin said.

At the conclusion of the workshop, the youth challenged the cofounders to take the project to the four directions of Canada.

'They were so very proud' Rankin Inlet is the sixth stop of a cross-Canada endeavour for the multi-cultural team of musicians, music producers, videographers and photographers.

As Ilitaqsiniq's executive director Adriana Kusugak explains, the base funding for Darkspark from the federal government didn't allow for travel to Nunavut.

"Of course we jumped at it. It was hitting everything that is within our mandate at Ilitaqsiniq, promoting literacy, working in Indigenous context, culture and language, incorporating elders and youth," said Adriana.

Because Ilitaqsiniq has staff member Kelly Clark-Lindell in Rankin Inlet and there's no music programming at Maani Ulujuk Ilinniarvik, that community was targeted to receive Darkspark.

Ilitaqsiniq enlisted the Department of Justice, through its Ikajuqtigiinniq program. The stipulations for that funding are: a large population and a high crime rate.

The local district education authority and the Hamlet of Rankin Inlet also came on board.

"But I don't think they really had any idea what was going to happen," Clark-Lindell said.

"They did a lot of activities ...

Classroom work, discussing a lot of Canadian colonization history, the Elder Quluaq Pilakapsi telling stories and Terrie Kusugak helped them create their songs and motivated them as a young artist."

Clark-Lindell says the students were nervous, but when they heard their voices play back, they couldn't believe they were theirs.

"They worked really hard," she said.

The video and the songs relate the students' messages – strong, hopeful and beautiful. The project concluded with a community event, where the students heard the final edits of their songs for the first time.

"They were so very proud," said Clark-Lindell.

"It's empowering stuff, it's moving," said Adriana, adding that includes the sections of the main video where the students are interviewed.

The two women especially note one boy, who they say has every reason to be angry at the world.

"But in this workshop he got to be the star of the show. He was the leader for his group. He was the joker. You just saw his personality shine through. He really enjoyed the mixing, the producing. I think it was just something that spoke to him," said Adriana.

"It was definitely worth it with the results that we saw come out of it. That's what all the fundraising was for."

She says Ilitaqsiniq hopes to bring Darkspark to other Nunavut communities.

Charges filed following Iqaluit standoff Northern News Services

A 34-year-old Iqaluit man has been charged with forcible confinement, assault, uttering threats and violating court conditions following a 12-hour standoff with police on Dec. 19.

The man barricaded himself in his home and refused to cooperate with the police, according to an RCMP news release issued early Dec. 20.

The Critical Incident Team was called upon to assist in the

situation and the public was kept away from the 100-300 blocks of Nipisa Street for their safety. Schools were also alerted.

Three young children were safely placed in the custody of Child and Family Services after police negotiations with the accused finally concluded the situation.

Alcohol was a contributing factor in this incident, the Mounties say.

The accused was scheduled to appear in the Nunavut Court of Justice the afternoon of Dec. 20.

"We would like to thank the residents of Iqaluit for their patience while we worked through this event.

We are pleased that the incident came to a peaceful resolution and no one was harmed," said RCMP Insp. Mark Crowther.

Iqalungmiut gathered Dec. 6 to mourn women who have died at the hands of violence.

The Qulliit Nunavunmi Arnanut Katimayiit (Qulliit Nunavut Status of Women Council) organized a community walk from the Igluvut Building to the Nunatta Sunakkutaangit Museum, where Nunavut Commissioner Nellie Kusugak spoke.

"By speaking out, by having these events, by acknowledging women and their many strengths and all that

we are capable of doing, this is allowing women to find the strength they need to leave an abusive relationship. To conquer whatever it is that they need in order to find that strength," said Kusugak.

She spoke of her own family's loss, as well as her mother's welcoming home and the importance of Inuit traditional practices.

Family Services Minister Elisapee Sheutiapik also spoke from the heart about loss due to violence.

A business venture that's been brewing for over a year could reach Nunavummiut taste buds by February or March.

Kaapittiaq will become the first Inuit-owned java enterprise.

Negotiations are underway to sell the light, medium and espresso roasts through Co-op locations across Canada, according to business manager Pamela Gross. The first order of beans, which is being shipped from a producer in Peru, will weigh in at 4,500 kg. Beaver Rock Roastery in Barrie, Ont., will look after the roasting and packaging of the coffee.

"Everyone drinks coffee," Gross said of the endeavour, which will provide a funding boost for the non-profit Kitikmeot Heritage Society, or Pitquhirnikkut Ilihautiniq, as it's known in Inuinnaqtun.

"We were discussing opportunities that we could do as an organization to create more of a revenue stream for us to supplement those periods where we're waiting for the much-appreciated funding that we do receive to come through," Gross said, adding that the elders involved in the heritage society are "ecstatic."

"They really look forward

to tasting Kaapittiaq and basically having it and drinking it every day," said Gross, who's also executive director of the Kitikmeot Heritage Society.

The heritage society is responsible for the May Hakongak Community Library and Cultural Centre, which features a museum and archives. The organization is also involved in research initiatives, locally and internationally and engages in archeology and sewing projects.

"It's all-around Inuinnait culture," said Gross.

The names of the three coffee roasts, not ready to be unveiled as of the writing of this article, will bear a distinctly "Inuit flair," said Gross. Kaapittiaq is Inuinnaqtun for "good coffee."

The Arabica beans are sourced from Indigenous farmers who grow them in a high-altitude valley in northern Peru, according to the Kaapittiaq website.

"Green beans are grown in naturally-forested and birdfriendly environments and are harvested by families through century old traditions," the site proclaims.

As the business scales up, she said it's hoped a local full-time job will be created through roasting, bagging and other duties, Gross added.

Leaders' club recognized

Iqaluit Thirty-three young students were recognized in December for their dedication to their school.

Joamie School principal Sonja Lonsdale says the youth are all part of a school club for Grade 5 students called Piqatigiit.

The students are interested in serving the school as leaders, she said.

"This can look different for each member, but includes – but is not limited to – helping set up for events, helping to monitor the playground, helping younger students get dressed, delivering food for the breakfast program, serving the community by going to the elder's centre or food centre, etc.," said Lonsdale. "(Piqatigiit) meets each week and runs from October to December. Students were given a thank you gift for their hard work and service to the school community."

Hampers for every home

Gjoa Haven Every home in Gjoa Haven – 285 total – is getting a Christmas hamper with a turkey, stuffing and cranberry sauce, courtesy of the municipal government.

This is the third year that the Hamlet of Gjoa Haven has issued the gifts to residents, although there were a few more items included during previous holiday seasons, acknowledged Connie

Baines, the hamlet's community development coordinator.

"It's a little leaner than last year, but turkey is still a nice gift ... it's nice to be able to give, for sure," said Baines. "It's what's affordable out of the budget this year. The hamlet is still in deficit recovery mode. We want to spend within our means."

Many people expressed their gratitude on the Gjoa Haven Facebook page.

"Thank you! It means a lot for all families," read one comment, with another resident commenting, "Thank you all for the hampers. Gjoa Haven, the best home town. Keep it going. Right on!"

The money to cover the expenses comes out of the hamlet's wellness fund.

The hampers were handed out on Dec. 19.

Residents were asked to stop by the hamlet office to pick up the holiday meal ingredients for themselves and for family members who weren't able to come in, although municipal staff were prepared to deliver some hampers, if necessary, Baines said.

Hitzmakerz takes program to the web

Nunavut Hitmakerz, a program which has previously travelled to several communities with its threeday music-making workshops for Inuit youth,

has landed on the internet.

The community workshops were offered by cultural director and Juno-nominated Sanikiluaq singer Kelly Fraser and Iqaluit-based creative director Thor Simonsen and were created to inspire, give hope, teach technical skills and help Nunavummiut create viable careers in the arts.

Part of the Hitmakerz project Ajungi, a set of on-line videos covers topics including singing theory, physiology, stretches, exercises and vocal hygiene techniques, explained Simonsen.

The videos come with workbooks to help students develop their singing at home and at their own pace.

"Customized, freely available singing lessons is the next step in helping us find and develop talented artists in Nunavut," said Simonsen.

"I really hope aspiring singers will watch the videos and learn what they want to learn."

In communities where internet is too slow to watch YouTube videos, Hitmakerz will send a free copy of the course on DVD, as well as printouts of the workbook materials.

The video lessons are taught by Hitmakerz singing coach Myriam Sevigny, who has worked with Nunavut artists such as Fraser, Aasiva and Angela Amarualik.

Manning says Aqsarniit also received a gift.

Helen Roos of the Ilinniapaa Skills and Development Centre offered "two boxes of books of various reading levels that were left at her learning centre from Frontier College and wrapping paper with bows from a fundraiser last year," said Manning.

Teacher Kelli McLarty's class received the books.

"With this, the students got a chance to create their own Secret Santa Bag to give a gift of literacy and provide a service. Some students will be gifting their siblings, parents, family friends and other students."

The students selected one book for their own personal library.

"They were also able to use the donation in the classroom to enhance the classroom library," said Manning.

Feasts and games

Kinngait/Cape Dorset Christmas celebrations kick off with a turkey dinner on Dec. 24 and finish with a feast of country foods on Jan. 1, said Will Sandoval, Cape Dorset's recreation director.

In between, a wide variety of games and events have been scheduled.

The Santa Claus parade is set for Christmas Day from noon to 1 p.m. As well, the community radio station will broadcast holiday greetings from family and friends throughout Christmas Day and some "radio games" will take place, said Sandoval.

On Dec. 26, outdoor games begin. The fun over several days will include snowmobile drag races, harpoon toss, tire pull, candy toss and jigging for "ugly" fish.

"The ones here in the bay are pretty ugly," he joked.

There's also a candy cane game, where contestants use a candy cane in their mouth to scoop as many other candy canes off a table as possible in 30 seconds while an opponent does the same.

The Sikusiilaq Band will provide music nightly and public skating will be held at times during the holidays, too, Sandoval added.

Blizzard strains hamlet crews

Ikaluktutiak/Cambridge Bay A three-day blizzard Dec. 12 to 14 left walls of drifting snow in Cambridge Bay and pushed hamlet staff to their limits to maintain services.

Calls flooded into the hamlet office requesting water-tank fill-ups and sewage pump-outs.

Mayor Pamela Gross said municipal employees have been trying to keep up.

"The crews are working really hard and working really late into the evenings. We need their services and appreciate what they do," Gross said on Dec. 18.

Making things even more challenging, the mayor noted, is that the hamlet didn't receive the vehicles it ordered on the final sealift of the season. The barge didn't arrive due to accumulating ice. Among the vehicles were a sewage truck and a garbage truck.

Regardless, workers are forging ahead with existing equipment.

"They're still cleaning up and they're doing a great job removing all the snow," said Gross.

"Things are slowly getting back to normal around here, but there's still high snowbanks all over the place."

The grand finale of the Dec. 5 community Christmas concert in Iqaluit included all six school choirs – Les Rayons de l'Arctique, Inuksuk Drum Dancers, Nakasuk School Choir, Joamie School Choir, Aqsarniit School Choir, Inuksuk High School Concert Band – as well as the Iqaluit Community Choir, the Northwinds Band Ensemble, the Iqaluit Fiddle Club and the Iqaluit Accordion Club.

The annual community Christmas concert, cohosted and organized by the Iqaluit Music Society and Inuksuk High School, drew a standing-room-only crowd – more than 1,000 Iqalungmiut – to the high school's gym Dec. 5.

With all six school choirs

and several community groups, that meant roughly 250 performers, said Inuksuk's Mary Piercey-Lewis.

"It's getting better and better every year," she said.

The grand finale saw all 250 sing Deck the Halls and Silent Night in Inuktitut, French and English together.

Building workers' knowledge of Inuit culture and history Nunavut Sivuniksavut's Inuit power curve the backbone of pilot workshop

In Nunavut, it's no big secret there are many workers in critical positions who move up from the south with little to no knowledge of the territory and its people. With that in mind, Ilitaqsiniq (Nunavut Literacy Council) developed a pilot project.

Four sessions of Inuit history and culture training workshop were successfully completed Dec. 6.

"The main motivation is that we know the importance of understanding the history of Inuit for everybody that works here. We knew that to properly do their jobs in whatever area that they work in, it's important to understand the context and the experience of the communities and the people they're dealing with," said programs and projects manager Jesse Mike.

"Not just that, but also the cultural differences."

To that end, Ilitaqsiniq hired

Adam Akpik, who is normally the Embrace Life Council's program development coordinator. He took a month of unpaid leave to take on the task of developing the workshop.

The all-day sessions are based on Nunavut Sivuniksavut's power curve, which lays out Inuit power, control, autonomy and independence from pre-contact days to the formation of Nunavut. In their presentation, Akpik and co-facilitator Kristen Kownak offer deeper insight into each historical event.

Both Nunavut Sivuniksavut graduates, Akpik and Kownak delivered similar workshops to federal employees responsible for Inuit files while they were second-year students.

"It's basically turned into my career, using what I studied at Nunavut Sivuniksavut in Inuit history to inform my work," said Akpik, who has delivered similar training across Canada for different organizations and universities.

Team Nunavut played five showcase matches in Yellowknife

It's not often teams from the North are able to get together as they prepare for the Canada Winter Games and it's rarer still to get to play against your competition before the games begin, but that is exactly what Team Nunavut's men's hockey team did last weekend.

The boys flew west to Yellowknife to play in a series of exhibition matches against Team NT and a team from Shawnigan Lake School out of B.C. The boys struggled to pick up wins over the weekend, but head coach Martin Joy said the

trip was well worth it.

"It was great for us because again, we haven't played a lot of games as a team and the most important thing for the guys is to figure out where they're at in regards to compete level," said Joy. After the weekend, the boys now have a measuring stick as to the level they need to achieve to compete at the games, which take place in two months time and they aren't far off, said Joy. The boys kept it close in their matches and dropped a number of games by only one or two goals, a success in itself given most of the players only started skating again in November, on

Speed skaters practicing over the holidays

Nunavut Team Nunavut's high performance speed skating team won't be taking the holidays off.

The team announced their holiday schedule and will be

small ice surfaces no less.

After the weekend of practice, Joy said each player now knows exactly what is expected of them moving forward as they continue to gel as a team.

"I can't stress to you how important that is," said Joy. "I think it was about making simple plays in regards to team-based hockey, we tried to do a little bit too much and made it complicated for ourselves, but that's part of the learning."

The athletes have now gone back to their respective communities to work on weaknesses identified by the coaching staff. They will gather the week before the Canada Winter Games begins for one final training camp.

GN calling for Inuit games applications

Nunavut The GN is calling for residents to apply for Inuit games events.

In a news release, the government called for municipalities and non-profits to apply for events including camps and skill development courses.

The significance of the achievement is not lost on Joy. "It's transformational in regards to hockey for the boys and girls in Nunavut that it gives you something to work towards," he said. "It's a big deal for these guys, because they understand when you see Sidney Crosby and Jordin Tootoo played there, you get to see and play against some of the top players in Canada. That is something exciting to look forward to."

Pool sharks in Rankin Inlet

Kangiqliniq/Rankin Inlet The Rankin Inlet Youth Drop-In Center held a holiday doubles' pool tournament on Dec. 22.

There was an entry fee of $10 and the funds were split between the top three winners. First place received 50 per cent of the pot, second got 30 per cent with third taking the remaining 20 per cent.

The tournament ran under standard rules with the eight ball being a call shot. Results were expected to be posted online.

'Inuit ... add a lot to the conversation' Building, from 18

"We're basically enhancing that (NS) presentation and taking it to Nunavut. At every single workshop we've run in the last two weeks, people say it should be mandatory as an orientation."

Each session had a full registration list and the demographic has been a mix of non-Inuit and Inuit.

"Having the combination of Inuit of different generations and non-Inuit who have different experience in the North in terms of time and work that they've done, you generate a lot of conversations. There are a lot of questions," said Kownak.

"Inuit, with their own personal experiences and personal family stories, add a lot to the conversation."

Kownak and Akpik also share personal stories.

"It creates a great dialogue," said Kownak.

Nevertheless, there can rigid perspectives based on stereotypes and those moments can be painful when they occur.

But Kownak says minds can open and so empathy can follow.

Akpik especially noted how effective the power curve is.

"Inuit and non-Inuit, at every training, have some knowledge of this history, but oftentimes don't have it pieced together into one big presentation. (The power curve) shows just what the effects of those relationships were in our history. That's what makes it unique to any other kind of training," Akpik said.

"You hear, maybe, about the dog slaughter and residential schools, but oftentimes not much beyond that. And when you do, it doesn't conceptualize it the same way as seeing it in that one graphic."

Kownak says such a workshop has been needed for a long time.

Participants filled out evaluation forms and debriefed at the end of each workshop. They were also asked what they have to offer Nunavut in the future, in light of their new knowledge.

Ilitaqsiniq's vision is that the workshop be expanded to two days, with delivery across Nunavut, said Mike.

The organization hopes to put together a train-the-trainer type of program as well, with the necessary resources to facilitate a workshop.

"For me it's almost unreal it's taken 20 years to develop.

I'm not saying it's an orientation, yet, for new workers to Nunavut ... But I think that's what it could turn into.

Transient workers come up here and are not given any resources on the background or the history of Nunavut," said Akpik.

Akpik mentioned the health profession, as another example among many.

"A health professional from the south will come up and work and they're given no context, for example TB treatment, being mistreated by health professionals. They see someone, who in their eyes might be acting irrationally when they're receiving their health service. But they didn't get the context of why it's not irrational," he said.
