Thrift store opens in Baker Committee working to re-establish food bank in community

There have been challenges along the way, but a Baker Lake thrift store officially opened its doors on May 11.

The store is being run by the Abluqta Society and profits from the venture will be used to fund a food bank for the community.

The idea for the society and store came about when Erin Strachan of Performance Management Consultants delivered an employment training program in Baker funded by the career development division of the Department of Family Services in 2016.

The program is designed to help people with disabilities or other difficulties find work.

When members of Baker’s health and wellness committee mentioned the need for a thrift store in the community to Strachan – who already felt her course participants were in need of work experience – the seeds were planted for the creation of the Abluqta Society and the thrift store, she said.

Joseph Arnasungaaq is president of the society, while Sharon Alerk will be managing the thrift store.

Strachan said she also learned of the need of a food bank in Baker, with the last one in the community closing its doors in 2015.

The thrift store is open two days a week – Thursday and Saturday.

“We actually just got started with

the food bank side of things this past week,” she said. “The society held a bingo recently to raise some more funding for the store and it’s going to use some of the proceeds from the bingo to buy the first items for the food bank and distribute them to 10 families in need in Baker just to get started. We are, at the same time, working to find more sustainable funding for the food bank side of the operation.”

Strachan said the thrift store received a sea can full of donated items from the Ikurraq Food Bank (Deacon’s Cupboard) in Rankin Inlet to get the operation off to a good start.

She said since opening, the store has been receiving a lot of donated items from people in the community.

“The items have been coming from people moving to the south again, people working on rotation with Agnico Eagle Mines and some people who just had some items to donate,” she said.

Clothing donations used to be left in a community hall for people to come and rifle through the bags looking for whatever they needed but members of the wellness committee didn’t think that was a very dignified way of doing things, said Strachan.

“We hope, it’s better for the community to have a store people can go to for their thrift items,” she said.

“They do have to pay a little something for them – the items are very reasonably priced – but it’s providing a supply of used clothing and house-

hold items, while also raising money to support the food bank.”

Strachan said the Abluqta Society have been developing this initiative for the past three years and it has been a real challenge to secure funding to get the operation up and running.

“It’s taken a lot of volunteer effort and organization to get it to the point where it is now and I’m really hopeful we’ll be able to find some longterm funding going forward,” she said. “The volunteer food bank in Baker that closed in 2015 ran for 25 years solely on bingos. They’d basically hold a bingo and then buy food and distribute it in the community.”

“The thing was, a lot of times the same people who were playing bingo also needed food, so it wasn’t, perhaps, the most ethical way of doing it, but the fact of the matter is there are a lot of hungry people in Baker Lake and elsewhere in Nunavut for that matter,” she added.

“It would be ideal to have some way of generating revenue for the food bank side of things that doesn’t involve gambling and we’re really trying to make that happen.”

Strachan said Susan Toolooktook, a community elder, pretty much ran the previous food bank in Baker by herself and is now on the Abluqta Society committee.

She said Toolooktook is simply an incredible person.

“Susan has a disability in that she’s deaf, but she’s the best hunter in town. She’ll go out by herself on

“It will be very, very good for Susan to get to see this come together in her lifetime because she devoted so much of her love and energy into wanting to see people in Baker have enough food,” she said.

Naujaat A nasty late season blizzard in Naujaat on May 31 ended up with the community being without power for about 26 hours.

The power went down during the height of the storm and full power was not restored until a lineman could be flown in the following day, June 1.

As of press time, power was reportedly restored to the entire community.

John Arnalukjuak High School students rocked the third school initiative celebrating Literacy Month in Arviat this past week.

They did so by painting rocks.

Leveled Literacy Intervention coordinator Jillian MacKenzie said she and learning coach Tom Wall came up with the idea after principal Romeo Fournier asked them to create initiatives to acknowledge May as Literacy Month at the school in ways that would benefit the community.

MacKenzie said one of the top points of this year’s Literacy Month was the focus on outreach.

They came up with three initiatives – a community library visit for the students, an elder’s love of literacy event that featured literacy expert Joe Karetak and a plan they dubbed “literacy rocks.”

“The students all collected rocks which we brought into the school and washed and each homeroom then painted the rocks a different colour,” said MacKenzie. “The initiative included a homeroom challenge which had the students paint the longest English or Inuktitut word that they could fit on the rocks.”

Drinking water not a health risk, says SAO 3

Although unsightly, the discoloured drinking water of Rankin Inlet poses no health risks to residents, says the hamlet's SAO. Justin Merritt said the hamlet is aware of the ongoing concerns with discoloured water flowing from taps in Rankin, especially in Area 6 and it is working with Community and Government Services and the Department of Health to investigate the issue.

He said there is no health concern and that the water is safe to drink.

“The water was tested a number of times and there were no concerns raised with me when the results came back, so I assume it’s OK,” he said.

No one is quite sure why the water is more discoloured in Area 6 than in other areas but it appears the root of the problem is related to low water levels and lots of ice, he said.

“That ice is pretty far down, so they think that’s what’s probably causing the problem,” he said. “The system is dredging water from near the bottom, as opposed to other years when there was

more water and less ice.”

Merritt said discolouration can result from change in the flow of water in the system, which can cause sediment in the pipes to loosen and be released into the water.

He said anyone with discoloured water in their household or business should run the cold water tap until it becomes clear.

A boil water advisory could be imposed if the situation worsens, he said.

“If a boil water advisory is released, then everything changes and we’d meet with the health officer and Public Works to come up with a strategy like we did a few years ago,” he said. “Public Works will keep us informed if anything changes. We have to keep an eye on things out of concern for the public, but, for now, there are no safety issues with drinking the water according to Nunavut’s Department of Public Health.”

Merritt said he’s been given no timeframe as to when the situation may begin to clear up but that Public Health and Public Works continue to monitor the situation.

“As it gets warmer, the water will deepen and it won’t, obviously, be taken from the bottom as much.

Looking for a southern saviour (again).

The 3055 Royal Canadian Army Cadet Corps (RCACC) in Naujaat has benefitted greatly by the leadership of Capt. Lloyd Francis during the past five years.

The corps saw its numbers and achievements grow while receiving numerous accolades on Francis’s watch. But, ultimately, its greatest success was the growth of so many Naujaat youth in the program, both with their cadet skills and their personal life skills.

Although wishing him nothing but happiness and success on the next part of his journey, the vast majority of cadets and their family members were deeply saddened when Francis – a teacher at Tuugaalik High School – announced this would be his final year in the community.

On the surface, the sadness stems from the loss of a highly-skilled and dedicated corps commander who produced tangible results and was deeply respected by the cadets in the 3055 RCACC. But beneath the sadness is where fear and apprehension lurk and the large group of Naujaat cadets affected

Grad retreat reminds students of journeys completed, challenges that await

Grade 12 students at John Arnalukjuak High School (JAHS) took part in the school’s most ambitious grad retreat to date this past week in Arviat.

This year’s retreat saw the students gather at the school at midnight on May 31 to engage in a number of activities before being loaded onto a bus, driven about 13 kilometres out on the land and then made to walk all the way back.

Each of the 13 kilometres represented one year the students spent in school on their way to graduation, explained JAHS principal Romeo Fournier.

“I was very clear in saying to the stu-

dents – in giving them the reality of this journey – they are going to be very excited at first, they’re going to get tired along the way, they’re going to want to quit, they’re going to want to give up, they’re going to be cold and they may have to rely on help from some of their peers or an elder that’s with them," he said.

"But, in the end, they’re going to cross that finish line and make it to their goal,” he continued. “The goal was also to represent life and to articulate to them that this is exactly what life is going to be like when they finish high school.

“With each step you take you are a step closer to obtaining your goals, but, along the way you will trip and you will fall, but falling is not nearly as important as getting up is,” he

continued. “We wanted to give them a chance to reflect on their journey from kindergarten to Grade 12 a bit and to celebrate the challenges along the way.”

JAHS started off the school year with 36 potential graduates but thanks to the positive effects of the ESTEEM program – which stands for empowering students through elders, education and mentorship – among others put in place this year, that number has risen to 40, said Fournier.

He said although the increase may not be that large of a number, staff takes pride in knowing they were able to provide those four students with the supports they needed to be successful and accomplish some of their goals and, in doing so, they now have the opportunity to graduate with their peers.

Before the students left the school for their trek, they heard from a special guest speaker from Australia’s education department named Phil Breslin via video. The effort was part of the school’s mission statement is to support their student’s growth into becoming contributing global citizens, said Fournier.

He said the students always need to be aware that there are more people and cultures out in the world.

“Mr. Breslin was kind enough to put together a video with some of his students down in Australia, in which they shared some of the culture from their aboriginal heritage,” said Fournier. “It was a fantastic video about another culture that had a little bit about the walkabout and their right of passage or coming of age.”
