School activities Naujaat Tuugaalik High School got off to a quick start in hosting cultural and traditional activities this school semester in Naujaat.

Already this semester the school has held a land trip for its Grade 9 students, a boating trip for its Grade 10 students and a hiking-and-fishing excursion for both its Grade 7 and Grade 8 students.

Tuugaalik High School's shop teacher and culture teacher, Laimmiki Malliki, is the school's lead planner for the activities.

Healthy pregnancy Baker Lake The Baker Lake Prenatal Nutrition Project hosted a mocktail tasting table at the local Northern store to mark International Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorders (FASD) Awareness Day in Baker Lake on Sept. 9.

The event was organized by the Baker Lake Prenatal Nutrition Project with funding from the Government of Nunavut's Department of Health (Community Wellness) and administered by the hamlet of Baker Lake.

The serving of mocktails, which are non-alcoholic mixed drinks, provided an opportunity for members of the Prenatal Nutrition Project to distribute information to expectant moms and the general public, on the importance of pregnant women not drinking alcohol in order to prevent FASD. FASD is a lifelong disability that can include birth defects, brain damage and major health problems.

The affliction is rendered 100 per cent preventable when pregnant women do not drink alcohol.

Remediation work Baker Lake The Qulliq Energy Corp. (QEC) would like to inform the residents of Baker Lake that it will be continuing environmental remediation around the old power plant site in Baker from Sept. 10 to Sept. 21.

QEC stated in a news release that the remediation land farm currently installed at the power plant site requires an expansion in order to complete the environmental work.

The expansion is expected to help accelerate the remediation process.

While safety personnel will be on the site, QEC is asking community members in Baker Lake to exercise caution around the area where remediation work is being done.

MacPherson said the school staff members hosted a special grad dinner for all the graduates on Thursday, Aug. 23.

She said the dinner was impressive, with staff members serving steak, lasagna, garlic mashed potatoes, macaroni salad and homemade cheesecake for dessert.

"It was a great turnout and a new tradition. The students were very grateful and enjoyed their meal."

MacPherson said Tuugaalik held its Class of 2018 graduation ceremony and prom the following day.

The professional decorator had the school's gymnasium beautifully decorated and the community was awestruck by how wonderful it looked, she said.

"There was a huge crowd. In fact, it was one of the largest crowds we've ever had," said MacPherson "Another highlight from the ceremony was the fact we added another new tradition to the proceedings.

"We gave every graduate two bouquets of artificial flowers (made by the decorator) that they gave out to loved ones, family, teachers, or friends who have helped them on their education journey.

"The addition produced very emotional and lovely presentations."

The annual event is held in memory of Terence Tootoo.

People gathered at the Tootoo family home, walked around Williamson Lake to raise awareness of suicide prevention in Rankin and then returned to the family home for a discussion and light refreshments.

Terence's dad, Barney, said his wife, Rose, puts a good deal of work into the event every year.

Barney said it's devastating that so many people in the Kivalliq have lost someone they love to suicide.

But it's 100 per cent better to bring it out in the open than it is to keep it locked behind closed doors, he said.

"I know a lot of guys who have lost loved ones to suicide and they don't want to talk about it, but there's no sense keeping it bottled inside because it's just going to build and build until it takes over your life in one way or another," he said.

"When it's bottled up like that – in the end you start thinking about it yourself."

Barney said he hopes the Suicide Prevention Walk also helps to

keep the topic highly visible in the region and reminds the Government of Nunavut that a lot more has to be done, especially in the area of mental health.

He said it was nice to see this year's walk being a lot bigger than the one held the previous year.

"I think the word's getting out a little more about the walk every year because so many people continue to be touched by suicide," said Barney. "We even had a number of people we didn't know come to this year's walk and they all came inside and chatted a bit and that was really nice.

"We had some folks help out, too, with our local kids' soccer coach Paul Stroeder working the barbecue for us. It's people like that you really want to keep in town here, because without people like Paul, I don't know what a lot of these kids in the soccer program would do."

Barney said it's important to keep events like the Suicide Prevention Walk and the annual Terence Tootoo Memorial hockey tournament held in memory of his son going in the community.

He said other communities host similar events for the same reason and they all seem to be getting a little bigger each year.

"People really seem to want to get together and talk now, which

is nice.

"In some ways, hosting these events is hard on all of us in the family, especially Rose, but I'm pretty sure suicide has touched every family in the Kivalliq, so we're not alone in that regard.

"My own opinion is that it's good these events are getting people to come together, bringing this subject out in the open and having it talked about it instead of trying to hold everything inside."

Barney's son, NHL hockey player Jordin, also does a great deal to promote suicide awareness during his travels and he encourages kids across Nunavut to love life and follow their dreams, he said.

"Jordin delivers a positive message everywhere he goes and I'm so proud of the work he does bringing this out in the open to be talked about.

"He lets people know that there is help out there and there are people out there who really care."

Barney said he finds inspiration in the words of his mother.

"My mom used to tell me that we have to keep moving on because, if we stop, we'll get left behind and have a hard time catching up again, if at all.

"So, we try to let bygones be bygones as much as we can, but it's always in the back of our minds."

Mountie could bring real change Northern News Services

Brenda Lucki said all the right things while being sworn in as the first female commissioner of the RCMP in history this past Thursday, Sept. 6, at Regina, Sask.'s, F Division.

Lucki comes aboard during one of the darker periods in the RCMP's fabled history, with public distrust in the force at an all-time high and more than a little unrest within its own ranks as claims of bullying and sexual misconduct and/or harassment continue to rise.

The commissioner actually stepped into her new role about six months ago and immediately set out to gather thoughts, ideas and opinions from members within the force's rank and file across Canada.

Taking the time to speak face-toface with officers across the country was a smart move by Lucki, who declared the lines of communicaSanikiluaq tion open within the force with the move.

It was also the right move to make by a new commissioner who cites rebuilding trust within the force as her top priority and there can be no doubt that truly opening the lines of communication would be a solid first step in the direction of reaching that objective.

As a force, the RCMP has made a bold statement in its outright acceptance of Lucki's appointment as its commissioner.

In the wake of two deaths, MLA calls for calm ᓄá·∆¿ÖÀî

Bear attacks complex problem needing rational thought, collective input

Reducing the threat of bear attacks in the Kivalliq depends on a cohesive effort that gives everyone a voice that will be heard, not "crazy talk", said Arviat North/Whale Cove MLA John Main.

Main made the comments in the wake of two fatal bear attacks in the Kivalliq during the past two months.

Darryl Kaunak, 33, of Naujaat lost his life when a female polar bear and her cub surprised him and his hunting companions, Leo Ijjangiaq and Laurent Jr. Uttak, while they were having tea the morning of Aug. 23 at Lyon Inlet, about 70 kilometres southeast of Naujaat.

In early July, Arviat resident Aaron Gibbons, 31, died after he placed himself between a polar bear and his children, who were able to run to safety.

"What we had happen in Arviat and Naujaat is just so incredibly sad," said Main. "In speaking with family members, the people who were affected, it was just devastating to them. There's a whole range of emotions that affect family members after something like this happens – anger, confusion, frustration and sadness – and I can't really understand what it must be like for those family members right now.

"As a territory we have to, once again, try to look at this thing and understand it so that we can, hopefully, prevent it from happening again in the future."

Teen captures crowns at international beauty pageant

Shanti Dias of Rankin Inlet laid claim to three different titles at the Globe Productions Miss Teen Intercontinental pageant in the Dominican Republic this past month.

Dias, 16, was named Miss Tourism Senior Teen International, Best of the Best Models and Miss Summer Body Intercontinental at the event.

Now in Grade 11 at Maani Ulujuk Ilinniarvik in Rankin, Dias said she attended a Globe Productions pageant in Toronto this past year, where she

received training on how to excel at a beauty pageant.

She said she was honoured and happy to win three different titles at this year's international event.

"I like these pageants because I feel they give me confidence in both my body and my personality and you learn how to just be yourself," said Dias. "I really enjoyed the training I received in Toronto this past year and it really helped me a lot at this year's international pageant.

"There's a lot of friendship that develops among the girls at the pageant, but when it comes time for

the competition, everyone puts the friendship aside and becomes really competitive.

"Like, there's no hate between anyone or anything like that, but everyone really wants to win."

Dias said she'd recommend competing in the pageant to any teenage girl who was interested.

She said she's available and willing to talk to anyone about her experience.

"I can recruit girls for the Toronto pageant and I think they'd really enjoy it," she said. "It's a lot of work and money for girls here because we're in such an isolated area, so you

need sponsors to help you be able to meet all the costs.

"I really owe a big thank you to the Atuqtuarvik Corp., the Kivalliq Inuit Association, International Furs and Agnico Eagle Mines, which was my biggest sponsor, for helping me to compete and succeed at these pageants.

"Because I won this title this year (Miss Tourism Senior Teen International), I get to go to next year's pageant free of charge so I can pass on my title to the next winner. So I'm really looking forward to being able to go again in the coming year to do that."

A record 20 students heard their names called to come forward and receive their Grade 12 diplomas during the event.

It's another emotional moment when grad Jermaine Ivalutanar presents her mother, Dianne, with a bouquet of flowers for all her years of love, support and encouragement.

I was in Rankin Inlet on July 25 to 26 with a training course. We were fortunate to go for a ride out on the GEELA SAVIAKJUK land. On the way back we came across these guys Coral Harbour water crossing. Very impressive, especially for the two Kylan Saviakjuk of Rankin Inlet visiting Coral Harbour trainers for Yamaha and Polaris who were teaching August 26, 2018 fishing at 16 mile brook – Kuuk. snowmobile and ATV repair.
