Kivalliq Regional Visitor Centre opens Hudson Bay

Rankin Inlet

Nunavut Premier Joe Savikataaq helped cut the ribbon to officially open the Kivalliq Regional Visitor Centre in Rankin Inlet on June 16.

The $3.8-million centre will provide a vital link between outfitters, tourist establishments, guides and tourists, he said.

The centre will employ three staff members to welcome visitors and showcase taxidermic wildlife. They will also encourage visitors to tour other Kivalliq communities, will advertise Kivalliq tourism outfitters and provide an avenue for regional businesses to promote their services.

In addition, the Nunavut Development Corp. will sell Nunavut artwork at the centre in partnership with Nunavut's Department of Economic Development and Transportation.

Artificial turf install Baker Lake Folks were excited in Baker Lake to hear the community's artificial turf will be put in place in early July. Agnico Eagle Mines chipped in to assist with material and help with preparation of the turf's foundation this past week.

New judges appointed to Nunavut Court of Justice Nunavut Two judges were appointed to the Nunavut Court of Justice in Iqaluit earlier this month.

Federal Justice Minister Jody Wilson-Raybould made the announcement on June 22. Queen's University Legal Aid senior review counsel Susan Charlesworth of Kingston, Ont., will replace Justice E.D. Johnson, who resigned effective Sept. 30, 2015. Public Prosecution Service of Canada general counsel Christian Lyons will replace Justice R.G. Kilpatrick, who resigned effective Sept. 30, 2016.

Qulliq Energy Corp. issues call for directors Kivalliq/Nunavut The Qulliq Energy Corp. (QEC) is accepting applications from Inuit interested in serving on the corporation's board of directors for a three-year term. Residents of Nunavut are strongly encouraged to apply.

The QEC is a territorial corporation of the Government of Nunavut and is responsible for the generation and distribution of electricity in the territory. Applicants are requested to email a cover letter and resume to Shelly McLeod at smcleod@qec.nu.ca by July 13.

Education is key to progress says premier Savikataaq lists housing, elder care, mental health and addiction treatment centres as top priorities

Premier Joe Savikataaq, the first from the Kivalliq region, this past week made his first stop in Rankin Inlet since assuming the territory's top position.

Savikataaq officially opened the Kivalliq Regional Visitor's Centre and addressed the Kivalliq Chamber of Commerce during his brief but busy stop.

Savikataaq tossed his prepared speech aside and spoke from the heart.

"I'm so proud that I was elected premier and I'm extra proud that I'm the first Kivalliq premier," he said. "I will do my best to make sure that Nunavut prospers.

"I have a different style than the previous premier – that's neither good nor bad, just a fact – a different perspective on stuff and a different way of doing things."

The Government of Nunavut (GN) will continue with its mandate, he said.

"It just wouldn't make any sense to deviate from it," he said. "Even though four years can seem like a long time, at times, in the world of government it's not. It's a snap of a finger. By the time you plan stuff and then want to do stuff, you're almost at the end already, so we're going to go with that (mandate)."

Savikataaq told the chamber the government is here to support them and that chamber members play a vital role in employment and economics in the various communities. He spoke about the need to train citizens to take advantage of opportunities in the mining industry.

"We have to train people to be ready for them," he said. "If we wait, we'll miss the boat and our opportunities to get employment will be gone, or dramatically lessened."

After his address, Savikataaq gave his first personal print interview as premier in his home region with Kivalliq News.

Savikataaq said it had only been a relatively short period of time since the chaos of the previous week that saw

"We haven't had much time to talk because they all left the very next day," said Savikataaq. "But I did tell them that I'm a team player and I'll be working with them in what I believe will be a

good working relationship."

Savikataaq declined to discuss one of his first official acts as premier, which was the removal of Paul Okalik as Nunavut's chief negotiator of devolution and restoring Simon Awa back to the position he had held for four years before being removed by Quassa just a week earlier.

His top priorities are to bring elder care, mental health and trauma and addictions centres into the territory.

"Another of my priorities is to get more housing, which has been an issue since the creation of Nunavut," he said.

"We just don't have enough housing and it's very stressful for so many people in small areas."

Savikataaq said he's confident the majority of Nunavummiut will have confidence in the government following the vote on Quassa.

"Everyone saw the numbers in the vote and it was pretty decisive in the assembly itself with the MLAs," he said.

When asked if he had one message above all for Nunavummiut as he begins his term as premier, Savikataaq said, "Help us in the government to get Nunavummiut employable."

"Go to school, stay in school, get training – get yourself educated so you can come to work for the government, or anyone else you want to work for. The key is to get yourself educated so you can get the good jobs that are there. And when I say education I don't mean just Grade 12, which is just a stepping stone to becoming a nurse, a doctor, a carpenter, an accountant, any of the trades.

Jerry Cans rock Solfest Annual fire department fundraiser making many people happy in Rankin Inlet

Iqaluit's Juno-nominated Jerry Cans rock the house during the annual Solfest festival in Rankin Inlet on June 16.

The second annual Solfest celebration and fundraiser for the Rankin Inlet Fire Department was a solid success, said Fire Chief Mark Wyatt.

The chief said at the end of the day, an undertaking such as Solfest is really all about the experience itself.

The department does a lot of different things to raise money throughout the year but as an event, Solfest was a great experience, he said.

"We could have raised a bit more money but at the end of the day, it's all good," said Wyatt. "When people come up to me and say how much they

enjoyed the event and they like how much the department is doing for the community, it makes me feel proud of my firefighters."

"I may be kind of instrumental in getting a lot of this stuff organized, but they work super hard doing the community events, when we go to fires and everything else the department does," he said.

"A fire department is a team and I have some really solid firefighters who work hard on all these projects that we do together."

Wyatt said the department has committees for fundraising and entertainment that hold monthly meetings to brainstorm on different things to do.

While he comes up with some great ideas, there's a lot that come from the department, as well.

"We had the fabulous Jerry Cans in from Iqaluit this year and they were just amazing at both the gala and the outdoor concert. People just loved them," he said. "Our local group, the Midnight News, opened for the Jerry Cans at both events and they really got the crowd going. People really like the songs they do."

Terrie Kusugak and Donovon Tootoo opened the Sunday show and they also did great, he said.

The hamlet set up bouncy castles for the kids to enjoy for the duration of the outdoor concert and the department gave away about 1,200 free hotdogs with juice, said Wyatt.

The Solfest raffle was also well-received by the community and people were happy winning all the prizes.

In addition, a 50-50 draw was held during the outdoor event and that made even more people happy.

"We raised more money in year one with the raffle, but we had additional expenses in our raffle in year two because we raffled-off two ATVs instead of one," said Wyatt.

"Our ticket sales were marginally better this year, but not to the extent of the extra cost, so we raised less money, but made more people happy and we'll take that."

For those who watched Savikataaq manoeuvre in Rankin – with that ever-present smile of his, relatively soft-spoken style and the manner in which he chose his words before speaking – and saw a soft man always playing it safe, you just weren't listening.

What was mentioned by MLAs as being far and away the main reason for bringing forward the non-confidence motion? Leadership.

How did Savikataaq describe himself in terms of his approach to governance? As a team player.

And to the notion of any sort of manipulation or scrambling of communication regarding the political process, Savikataaq politely suggested one revisit the final count in the non-confidence vote.

Enough said.

Arviat students become tellers of tales through class assignment

What started as a cool year-end writing assignment for Grade 9 English students at John Arnalukjuak High School in Arviat may eventually become an even cooler published work of original myths entitled, How Did the Ptarmigan Learn to Fly? "These myths tell about the youth of today and their understanding of the values and traditions that are a part of their Inuit culture. Interwoven throughout their writing is their inherited knowledge, respect and wisdom of daily life in a stark and beautiful environment," said their teacher Victoria Plaskett. "It has been my privilege and honour to read their writing and edit their words and stories."

The students' path to publishing started when they were given the assignment to create their own original myths after they spent months writing daily journals and reading all sorts of essays, articles, short stories and novels.

Plaskett – who holds a doctorate in education/resiliency – said the students were then asked to participate in a Reading Buddies initiative to read their myth to one other person.

She said the students went to Qitiqliq Middle School to visit the Grade 8 classroom of Maggie Manik to read their stories on May 24, after she had compiled the stories

into an illustrated book.

"There was a hush in Maggie's classroom when students received the first copies of their stories," said Plaskett. "Then they started showing their stories to each other. There was this quiet buzz of excitement as everyone read together. It was absolutely magical."

High school principal Romeo Fournier and Plaskett set goals of getting students to read and write this past February to prepare the students to write their myths.

Plaskett said each student received a writing portfolio and a daily writing journal, with lessons on grammar, spelling and punctuation coming later.

She said the students read daily, being introduced to Orca Soundings books – short contemporary fiction written by established authors for reluctant readers – before moving onto the teen classic, The Outsiders

by S.E. Hinton and then William Shakespeare.

"First we talked about Shakespeare's life and times. It is full of fun facts, especially when you remember he was writing more than 400 years ago in Elizabethan England. Then I gave them a choice between Macbeth or Romeo and Juliet and, of course, the hands went up for the classic romantic tragedy," she said. "Students read a graphic version, chunked to go along with the movie, because Shakespeare's plays are meant to be seen."

Plaskett said the students read, Anne Frank: Diary of a Young Girl and Freedom Writers as both works have the common theme of selfawareness and resiliency through journal writing.

She said they wrote in their journals for 10 minutes each day.

"They wrote about the land they love, the families they love and close friendship ties. They wrote about how a new little brother brought fresh joy into their lives, the Saturday night dances, hockey games, working on weekends and walking around town with friends," she said.

"They wrote about being home all day in a blizzard, about riding their Ski-Doo on blue sky afternoons, about flying to Winnipeg to stay in a

hotel and dreams of one day going to Paris, France and finishing their education 'no matter what'. They wrote about hunting on the land for caribou and Arctic fox, the spring fishing derby and the breakup of sea ice on the Hudson Bay in August."

"When it came time to write their myths, they were ready," she said.

A myth is a traditional story about superhuman beings, such as gods, goddesses, heroes or monsters, usually explaining the origin of natural events and forces and cultural practices. Some myths teach values, such as humility or patience.

The next step for the book of myths, How Did the Ptarmigan Learn to Fly? is to have the stories translated into Inuktitut with a goal

toward future publication.

Plaskett said many students chose to read their myths to their former Grade 8 teacher, Maggie Manik, during the Reading Buddies morning at Qitiqliq Middle School.

She said it was especially meaningful for Manik and she congratulated the students on writing wonderful stories.

In honour of their hard work, student Donald Baker-Spence received a Toronto Raptors T-shirt for being the first to have his story, Why is the Sky Blue in Day Time? read aloud to the group, while Donald Suluk received a Canadian Hockey Legends stamp collection for being second with his story, The Guy with 3 Bullets and Ijiraq, said Plaskett.
