An emotional gift from the past Arviat man views 80-year-old drawings done by his dad as a teenager

Some things are just worth the wait.

Almost 18 years have passed since Eric Anoee Jr. was passing time on a routine flight by flipping through a magazine when his eyes landed on the face of his father staring back at him through the pages of time.

The article informed him of a collection of early drawings done by his dad as a teenager in 1937 and 1938 that he didn't know existed.

After years of trying to contact the author and connect the dots to the collection, he was standing in the Manitoba Museum earlier this month holding a pencil drawing done by his dad.

Now in his mid-forties, Eric Jr. began to softly sob as he tried to put into words how he felt during

that moment in the museum, as the drawings rekindled the closeness he and his father had shared for so many years.

He paused, took a slow, deep breath, and tried to harness his emotions and put them into words.

"I had to imagine and wonder about the time period when he started exploring art as a young person," he said. "I could sense from the drawings that he was free-spirited, had a lot of imagination that, being a kid, was all over the place, and that he was happy, carefree, well-cared for and well-adjusted for a young person of that era."

Eric said the collection had been donated to the Manitoba Museum by Winifred Marsh, wife of Reverend Donald Ben Marsh, who opened an Anglican mission at Eskimo Point in 1926 and went on to become the second Bishop of the Arctic.

"There were so many different emotions going through my mind as I looked at them, that it was almost overwhelming," he said.

Eric said looking at his teenaged father's drawings, he was amazed at how early in life Eric Sr. displayed the amazing gift he possessed. He said Winifred (in addition to being a missionary) was also an artist who taught at the Anglican Church, and she encouraged everyone to try getting into art.

"When Katherine (Pettipas) talked about the drawings, she said they were created when my father was in an iglu around Arviat in the winter, so it's pretty neat to know that while he was at home in his iglu, he spent a lot of time learning how to make art," he said. "I started picturing him being young and with his mother, and I wondered how things must have been for him during that time period."

Many of the drawings depict a lot of the everyday life Eric's father observed, such as all the buildings in the small village of Arviat.

There are also drawings of people he must have known like his friends, traders or missionaries, and it looked like his favourite subject was animals, especially caribou, which he learned to illustrate very well, said Eric.

The sketches that really reached out and grabbed him were the ones depicting themes of his father's life, said Eric, and together they told a story of how life was back then, including what Eskimo Point was like at the time.

"My father passed away in 1989 and this was my first sense of a real connection with him since he passed," said Eric.

"I found the gap between the early sketches and his later work

Eric hopes to take his older brother Obed to see the collection in the near future, and is looking at ways the rest of his family and the community of Arviat can see the work.

"When I saw his drawings, I thought somehow my father wanted me and my family to do something with them, so I'm starting to think about how I might have many more people see them, and, through this experience, I've also come to appreciate museums a great deal more, and understand just how much curators research, learn about, and care so deeply for, the artifacts they're

entrusted with."

When he told Obed about their father's drawings, his older brother expressed a lot of admiration and was happy to learn more about his history, he said.

"Being the youngest of his children, my dad and I were really close, and my favourite memories of him are of being out on the land every spring," said Eric. "As soon as school was over we would go camping and spend the whole summer out the land, and he would be in his element out there hunting with me and my family.

"He was as skilled on the land as he was at his art, and he showed me a lot of things in life such as hunting and surviving here in our environment."

Students and staff members at Simon Alaittuq School raised $600 in remembrance of those who lost their lives in the Humboldt, Sask., tragedy in Rankin Inlet on April 13.

School lends helping hand Rankin Inlet Students and staff members at Simon Alaittuq School (SAS) raised $600 in remembrance of those who lost their lives in the Humboldt, Sask., tragedy during a special Jersey Day at the school in Rankin Inlet on April 13.

While SAS is one of the smallest schools in the territory, the students showed themselves as having some of the biggest hearts in raising the $600, wrote principal Bev Hill in a press release.

"One student came with 60 cents and put it towards the cause (students were asked to bring $1, if they could)," wrote Hill. "Out of a terrible tragedy, our students learned empathy and the strength of many working together for a common cause."

Award winner Rankin Inlet Jakob Voisey – living in Iqaluit, but from Rankin Inlet – was named the recipient of the 2018 Pana Award on April 20.

The annual award is given to the student recognized as the hardest worker at the Environmental Technology program's field camp.

National stage Rankin Inlet Members of the Rankin Inlet FC were in Kingston, Ont., from April 19 to 22 to compete at the 2018 Canadian Soccer Futsal Canadian Championship.

The squad was being coached at the national event by Paul Stroeder of Rankin Inlet.

Final results were not known as of press time.

Making ice near the Arctic Circle Hamlet, North West Company team up for outdoor rink in Naujaat

Naujaat youth are having a great old time finishing out hockey-and-skating season in style, thanks to an outdoor rink that was built next to Tusarvik Elementary School this past week.

Acting senior administrative officer Kevin Tegumiar said the idea for the outdoor rink came from Naujaat Mayor Solomon Malliki.

He said SAO Rob Hedley then took the idea another step by applying to the North West Company for funding to cover the project.

"Rob (Hedley) and I met with a member of the management team of the North West Company and we were told the project would fit under a grant through their Healthy Horizons Foundation," said Tegumiar. "They granted us $6,500, which covered the entire cost of the project."

The hamlet needed another well-lit area for the kids to skate, he said, especially with the arena set to close in about a month.

"It works out really well for us now, too, because the Arctic Circle Cup senior men's hockey tournament is set to get underway this coming weekend, and the outdoor rink gives the kids another place to skate so they don't miss any time on the ice so near the end of the season," said Tegumiar.

The North West Company representative said that not a lot of communities were applying for a grant through the Healthy Horizons Foundation, he continued.

He said while he'd like to see other communities benefit from the foundation, the fact that not a lot were applying meant Healthy Horizons could cover all the

"We had the guys at the fire department get the project started," he said.

"They were excited to help out with something like this because it's not something they get to do all the time. We had the heavy equipment operators spend about half an afternoon clearing all the snow, and a couple of the firefighters and a couple of guys from our recreation department handled the flooding."

"We weren't long seeing a few kids hanging around the area and growing impatient," he continued.

Tegumiar said this is the first time an outdoor rink was constructed next to the elementary school.

He said the project was slowed just a bit due to bad weather this past week.

"The community seems to really like the idea, and I'm pretty sure they'll be expecting something similar to be done next year," he said.

Government honesty hard to find Northern News Services

It's a dangerous, deadly drug and it's already in communities near you.

Busts for fentanyl and large amounts of cocaine have already taken place in Yellowknife and Iqaluit.

Believe it: the idea of it being the problem of others in communities far, far away is beginning to crumble into a dusty powder of wishful thinking not unlike the deadly pills taking lives in so many towns and cities across Canada.

And if things keep progressing the way they have been, it's only a matter of time before it becomes the Kivalliq's problem too.

While a large amount of the deadly drug is coming to our country, our own Health Canada – in its seemingly never-ending efforts to take granny statesmanship to levels never before seen in this country – helped create the demand for fentanyl by declaring war on all opioid use to the point where prescriptions were necessary even for the long available over-thecounter concoction of acetaminophen with codeine phosphate.

Arviat competes in Manitoba Cup First team to compete at event feels right at home, says team organizer

The first Arviat team to compete at the Manitoba Cup senior men's hockey championship felt right at home at the event, said team organizer Gleason Uppahuak.

The event was held in Winnipeg, Man., from April 12 to 15, with the Arviat squad entering Division 4 of seven divisions.

Uppahuak said Arviat went 1-and-2 in the round-robin segment and didn't advance to the playoff round, but all three games were very close.

He said Division 4 seems like the perfect fit for Arviat, with the lower divisions possibly being too easy for the team and the higher divisions being too stacked for them to compete in.

"All three of our round-robin games could have gone either way with a bounce here or there," said Uppahuak. "All the teams were so close in our 10-team division that with one loss the team in second place could have finished eighth."

"We certainly weren't overmatched in any of our games," he added.

Uppahuak said he started trying to put the Arviat team together for the Manitoba Cup this past January.

He said you have to have your roster together early because, in Manitoba's top tournaments, they're very strict when it comes to submitting your roster on time – sometimes as

"I had nine players commit to our three lines and I registered their names. Then, about a week before the tournament started, I had a number of other friends start asking if

they could play. They asked me to just add their names and, you know, kind of see what happens, but that doesn't work at Winnipeg tournaments," he said. "You feel bad when that happens, but some guys have to understand you have to really follow

Uppahuak said the 14 players (nine forwards, four defencemen and a goalie) who made the trip all had an excellent time.

He said the hockey was awesome, and everyone enjoyed going to eat at

restaurants and hanging out together as a team.

"We really did a lot of bonding in Winnipeg as a team, and half of us played together growing up, so it was a like a little reunion of sorts for us.

"The twins (Robert and Charlie Karetak) and I grew up together and everyone knows hockey life in the Kivalliq, and the stories we never get tired of telling," he said. "There was a lot of that sort of thing going on this trip and it was a lot of fun for everyone."

Uppahuak said so many players regretted their decision not to go to this year's event, that he's going to try to enter two teams in 2019.

Everyone has to pay their own way, but he's sure they can all do it if they commit to going and start planning for the event now, he said.

"I don't want to interfere with or, you know, stick my nose into anyone's hockey program other than my own, but I would strongly suggest to the Rankin Inlet players that they look at attending this tournament, maybe instead of going to Yellowknife or Toonik Tyme in Iqaluit every year," he said.

"The competitiveness is there, and I find the atmosphere to be a lot better than at those other two tournaments.

"Judging by how much positive feedback I received... I'm pretty sure we'll be able to get enough guys for us to send two teams to Winnipeg next year," he continued.

Drama teacher and play director Gord Billard says the show will be 'fantastical'

The John Arnalukjuak High School Drama Club in Arviat will be closing out the school year by performing the epic coming of age story Inuk and the Sun in June.

Drama teacher and play director Gord Billard said it will be a mammoth production.

"It's hopefully going to be one of our biggest and most successful shows in terms of collaboration with the various classes, and the types of media we'll be using with the masks, shadow puppetry, projections, lighting and other special effects," he said. "It's somewhat of a complicated play to pull together, and I don't mind admitting I'm a bit nervous about it."

Written by the German playwright Henry Beissel, the story is based on characters from Inuit mythology and follows a young boy named Inuk as he journeys to save his people and become a man.

The plot echoes the universal experience of growing up and coming to terms with life and death as Inuk and his father set off to hunt during the cold winter season.

The family and tribe are starving and Inuk is convinced that he must capture the sun and bring it back in

order for all to survive.

Inuk faces great danger, loss and deprivation but is helped on his quest by several spirits including the wind, moon and sea. He also meets a number of animals that speak to him, such as muskox, caribou and fox. "(Beissel) is not an Inuk or Aboriginal writer – but he did study Inuit history and mythology," said Billard.

The play will be performed during the first week of June, most likely on June 5 and 6, but the exact dates for the school shows and public performances have yet to be officially announced.

Billard said the show will be fantastical.

Inuk is pulled down under the sea by seals during his quest. The seals bring Inuk to a sea monster under the waves, where he also encounters Sedna.

"One of the things that has me particularly excited about doing this show is that our principal, Romeo Fournier, has our drama, art and music classes all scheduled for the same first period in the morning," said Billard.

"We will be using masks and doing shadow puppetry in the play, so the art class has been busy working on making the masks for the show. The music group will be trying to do all the background music, and there's all sorts of sound effects, such as wolves

and dogs howling, wind blowing and that kind of thing."

Billard said having mostly live, created sound on stage during the production is a challenge he's confident the music group will meet.

He said the masks and puppets are being created by the art class, and he's looking after the acting and the overall production of the play.

"A lot of things have to come together," he said. "I'm just starting to get my hands dirty with it all, but there's no doubt in my mind that making sure all the technical stuff is in place is going to be our biggest challenge in pulling this off at a level we'll all be proud of."

Rising Kivalliq talent Cheryl Nibgoarsi has been cast in the lead role of Inuk, while Edith Issakiark will play Sedna, goddess of the sea and marine animals, and Andy Evaloakjuk will play the role of Inuk's father.

Innosar Issakiark is returning to Arviat from trade school in Rankin Inlet and will be playing the role of Spirit of the Ice, while Justin Suluk will be returning home from Sault Ste. Marie, Ont., to take on the role of the sea monster.

Both Issakiark and Suluk were sent scripts of the play, and they're expected to join live rehearsals this week.
