Battling through heartache Former Humboldt Broncos player remembers friends, coach killed in bus crash in Saskatchewan

Like so many others across the country, Daniel McKitrick, formerly of Coral Harbour, was shocked and saddened when he heard the devastating news of the crash involving the Humboldt Broncos Sixteen people died when a bus carrying the team to a Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League playoff game collided with a tractor-trailer at the intersection of two rural highways near Tisdale, Sask., on April 6. The other 13 people aboard were injured.

McKitrick’s former head coach, Darcy Haugan, and captain, Logan Schatz, were among the dead.

The news was a direct shot to McKitrick’s heart, having played a season-and-a-half with the Broncos and knowing some who survived... and some who didn’t.

“I had seven or eight former Broncos teammates who were on that bus,” he said.

McKitrick missed Game 2 of his Manitoba Junior Hockey League final series with the Steinbach Pistons this past month, when he ran into a snowstorm on his way back to Steinbach from Humboldt, Sask.

But it was a trip he had to make as he was visiting former teammates and survivors of the tragedy.

McKitrick said it tore the heart out of him when he first received the news about the Humboldt tragedy.

“It was a senseless, crazy tragedy,” said McKitrick. “I thought about how many times I was riding that same way there with my teammates. They’re just really awesome people down there in Humboldt.”

During his time as a Bronco, McKitrick grew very close to his teammates.

McKitrick’s voice began to crack as he continued to speak of the community of Humboldt and the unbearable anguish some of its citizens

have experienced.

“They’re going through such a hard time in Humboldt right now, but, you know what, they’re getting through it,” he said. “It’s been so nice to see all the support they’ve received; all the money that’s been donated and everything that’s been all over the Internet and television.”

“The Broncos are special in Humboldt,” he continued. “It’s crazy how everyone looks forward to having a new team each year and going to all the games. It really brings the community together and it’s just terrible what happened.”

McKitrick went on to win the Manitoba Junior Hockey League title

with the Steinbach Pistons with a 2-1 victory over the Virden Oil Capitals in Virden, Man., on April 21.

His team was down two games to none in the finals when he returned to the lineup to get the game winning goal in game 3.

When he scored he pointed to the sky to honour his lost friends.

Team arrives Rankin Inlet The Mimico teams from the Greater Toronto Area arrived in Rankin Inlet this past Friday, April 27, for the second segment of the cultural exchange program with the Rankin Rock minor hockey program.

The final day of exhibition hockey between the Mimico and Rankin teams is today, May 2.

The Rankin Rock atoms take on the Mimico Blue atoms at 3 p.m. at the Rankin arena, while the final game pits the Rankin Rock peewee and bantam team against the Mimico bantam team at 4:15 p.m.

Arctic Circle Cup Naujaat Four teams were scheduled to compete in the Arctic Circle Cup senior men’s tournament in Naujaat this past weekend.

A search-and-rescue (SAR) mission ended in success when a young man from Rankin Inlet was found after being lost on the land for three days.

On April 20, Kashtin Simik was travelling alone from Chesterfield Inlet to Rankin Inlet but failed to arrive at his destination.

SAR teams mounted a desperate search for the missing man and located him on the evening of April 23, according to Rankin Inlet Search and Rescue member Wesley Innukshuk.

Simik left Chester at about 7:15 p.m. on April 20 but then ran out of gas, said Innukshuk.

The search was organized when Simik’s father phoned Rankin SAR to tell them his son had not returned home.

“His dad went out and searched for him Saturday morning, but found nothing, so he called us back to say there was no sign of him, so we immediately started our search and rescue,” said Innukshuk.

A helicopter, a Twin Otter plane and about 25 to 30 SAR members from Rankin and Chester began a search.

He was finally spotted from a helicopter on the evening of April 23 walking on the snow.

“All our searchers did a great job and, thankfully, this search ended on a happy note,” said Innukshuk.

'Just stay put' Innukshuk said the rescuers found Simik’s snow machine long before they located him.

He said this, hopefully, will be another message to people to never leave their machine and qamutiik if they’re broke down on the land.

“If you have any kind of tools for a shelter, stay with your machine where you broke down or ran out of gas. Just stay put,” he said. “We found his machine right after lunch and we didn’t find him until 7:52 p.m. Six or seven hours is an awful long time when you’ve been on the land for three days.”

Simik was found walking in a north-

west direction, away from Rankin, when he was found.

Innukshuk said he was walking in a circle and almost looped back to his 600 Polaris Classic machine.

“So, really, he was pretty much out there walking in circles,” he said.

Innukshuk said Simik didn’t sign-out a SPOT tracking devise before his trip, nor did he have a GPS or a satellite phone.

He said he left Chester with a full tank of gas and about three to five spare gallons in a jerry can.

“It was not the best weather for travelling that evening either, with the wind picking up the way it did,” said Innukshuk.

Daniel McKitrick, 20, formerly of Coral Harbour, added another championship to his hockey resume as the Steinbach Pistons captured the Manitoba Junior Hockey League (MJHL) title with a 2-1 victory over the Virden Oil Capitals in Virden, Man., on April 21.

All the scoring happened in the first 10 minutes of the game, and the Pistons put on a superb defensive display in making the 2-1 lead stand-up for 50 minutes.

The Pistons are now facing the Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League (SJHL) champion Nipiwan Hawks for the right to advance to the RBC Cup – Canada’s national junior A hockey championship – in Chilliwack, B.C., from May 12 to 20.

McKitrick has now passed the 200-point mark in his junior A career, counting his regular season and playoff points.

The speedy forward said he’s now totally focused on getting to the RBC Cup. He said he’s familiar with the Nipiwan Hawks, having played about 20 games against them during his time in the SJHL. “The Hawks play a bit different game than we do,” said McKitrick. “They’re a bunch of huge guys – sort of grinders – but I only watched this year’s Hawks team play one time over the Internet, so I don’t really know that much about them. When I played against them, they were always pretty tough and did a lot of hitting, so we’ll just have to see how the series goes.”

McKitrick said it was a good feeling being on the ice with his parents and the MJHL championship trophy on April 21.

He said being in his last year of junior eligibility helps motivate him even more to reach the RBC Cup. “There’s a couple of 20-year-olds on our team and it feels like I’m playing way harder anyway knowing it’s my last chance to get there,” he said. “I mean, I played hard this

past year too, winning the RBC Cup with the Cobourg Cougars but this year I feel, as a 20-year-old, I’m skating really hard and focusing really hard.”

“Just playing in that tournament again, going in back-to-back, would be something else because, after the round-robin, anything can happen in one game at the RBC Cup in both the semifinal and final – and we still have to win four more games to get there – but this is a year I feel we can get it done,” he added.

McKitrick’s parents, Leonie and Bruce of Coral Harbour, were happy to have made the trip to Manitoba to see their son claim the MJHL championship.

Bruce said the final series pitting the first place Pistons against the second place Oil Capitals was an up-and-down affair.

He said things looked bleak when the Oil Capitals took an early 2-0 series lead, but Steinbach roared back with four straight wins.

“We had to make our way down there for this one in case it turned out to be his last junior A game,” said Bruce.

Bruce got to watch his son score the game winning goal in game 3 and then go on to assist on the winning goal in the championship game.

“It was awesome,” he said.

It was also nerve-wracking watching the clock for 50 minutes and waiting for the final buzzer to sound while hoping a one-goal lead would hold up, he said.

“It’s fun now to rewind the game and watch it in my head, but not so much when it was actually happening,” he said.

Bruce said the atmosphere was fantastic for game 6 in the Virden arena.

He said the time spent watching the game reminded him of a Kivalliq tournament in Rankin Inlet.

“It was just like when we went to the Avataq in Rankin; being on the ice for an hour after the game with all the parents was awesome,” he said. “We won’t forget the experience anytime soon, that’s for sure.”

Singing the proud Leafs blues Northern News Services

With the conclusion of the first round of the 2018 Stanley Cup Playoffs, the friendly – and sometimes not so friendly – taunts were everywhere over social media, with, as always, a disproportionate number of them aimed at fans of the Toronto Maple Leafs.

The most stinging comments, of course, arrived courtesy of Montreal Canadiens fans, who take an almost unnerving delight in the Leafs failures and the misery of their fans.

For the next calender year the number 51 will be an important one for Habs fans, as they gleefully remind Leafs fans how many years it has been since Lord Stanley’s Mug last paraded down Yonge Street.

Fair enough. No rivalry has been as intense as that of the Leafs and Habs for the past century. And they deserve to get their digs in, even they don’t quite hold the same weight coming from fans of a team that was outside looking in – by a wide margin – from this year’s playoffs.

But the digs and jibes from fans of the other Canadian teams is a bit mystifying, especially when you consider just how long it has been since the Leafs previous Cup victory (196667), yet each and every one of those clubs has to – if I may borrow a line – look up, way up, at the Maple Leafs when it comes to Stanley Cup triumphs.

But the thing that has this card-

The community of Naujaat had a lot going on as the calendar flipped from winter to early spring during the past 60 days.

From a We Matter visit to the high school, to the return of the jappamaking project, the growth of the local cadet program and a new outdoor rink built by the hamlet, youth in the community had a number of things happening to grab their attention.

Rankin Inlet FC has a long way to go to compete on the national stage after being humbled at the Futsal Canadian Championship.

The squad finished last in the eight-team tourney during roundrobin play at the tournament at Queen’s University in Kingston, Ont., from April 19 to 22.

They still made the playoffs but were eliminated after one game.

It was the first time a team from Nunavut entered the competition and Rankin FC member James Merritt said the level of play at nationals was something he’d never seen before.

“It just wasn’t one player per team or anything like that, it was their overall style of play,” said Merritt.

“They all knew where each other was going to be at all times and they all played systems that were really impressive.”

The team compete hard against the Yukon in their final game and almost pulled it off. They were three goals down in the first half but fought back in the second before losing 3-2.

The scores in their games against a Quebec team, Manitoba and Saskatchewan were more lopsided, he said.

“If we ever hope to go down there and really compete, we’re going to need full commitment from a full team of players, and, I think, we’d also need to have someone come in and teach us how to play a real system,” said Merritt.

“We didn’t really appreciate the level of play that was waiting for us in Kingston,” he said. “We walked into our first game thinking we had a chance to win and that changed really, really fast.”

Merritt said the other teams at the event welcomed the players of the Rankin Inlet FC with open arms.

Everyone was happy the Rankin team was there, and they all offered to help the Nunavut squad in any way they could, he said.

“It was really nice the way they treated us,” he said. “We also felt a little, I don’t know, out of place, I guess, because the bit of gear we had was nothing compared to that of the other teams. I think they felt a little bad because everyone else had track suits and everything and we didn’t

have very much.”

Rankin FC coach Paul Stroeder said the level of talent at the national championship was simply phenomenal.

He said the first thing Rankin FC can take away from the experience is that you have to be in top physical shape to have any chance of competing at the national level.

“The second area we were obviously far behind the other teams was that of tactical play; how to use tactical play while both attacking and defending,” said Stroeder.

“We could put a team together that could compete at that level, but it takes dedication and commitment.

One thing I will say, however, is that there’s no need going out and seeking sponsorships if the players aren’t committed because you’re just wasting money.”

Stroeder said it was still a very positive experience for the Rankin FC to compete at the national level.

He said the players did compete as hard as they could, and they never gave up, no matter what the score.

“Chad (Graham) and I are going to scout our U18 territorial to see about maybe bringing some of them

in for a tryout or possibly taking a team over to the Yukon for a friendly (competition) to see how they play,” he said. “We also have to develop and buy into total team play. It’s a team sport and we really found that out at the nationals. Some players are trying to be individualists and, I’m sorry, but that just doesn’t work.

They just got eaten-up.”

Rankin has a good core of players but changes are needed, said Stroeder.

“It’s not a weekend getaway. If you want a weekend getaway, do it on your own time, not mine. And there was a little bit too much of that down there, guaranteed,” he said.

Arnaud Maldague, 29, of Brussels, Belgium, arrived in Arviat on April 23 after snowkiting for about 100 kilometres. The resident of Brussels, Belgium, left Kugaaruk on Jan. 4 on a journey that will see him ski, cycle, kayak, sail, walk and even horseback ride over 30,000 kilometres until he arrives in Ushuaia, Argentina, in about two-and-a-half years.
