Five students from Arviat’s John Arnalukjuak High School all brought home medals from the 13th Nunavut Skills Competition in Iqaluit on April 29.

Winning silver medals were Mallory Okatsiak in hairstyling and Damaris Nutarasungnik in photography. Blair Aulatjut and Paulie Issumatarjuak split a silver medal in video production while Meeka Koomuk took bronze in asthetics.

Another Arviat participant, Daniel Alagalak, earned silver in post-secondary carpentry.

The students were accompanied to Iqaluit by their coaches, Gord Billard and Sarah Bruckschwaiger, who is also school liaison for Skills Nunavut.

Billard said the competition went well for the Arviat students and the whole team walked away feeling like they had a successful weekend in Iqaluit.

“Three silvers and a bronze in four categories is something to be proud of,” said Billard. “You don’t just go to Skills for the gold.

You go there for the experience of the competition, to meet other people, and to learn more about the discipline you’re involved in. It’s

always nice when you win gold and score high enough to go to the nationals – which we’ve done a lot – but most of our students this year were first-timers at the competition.”

Billard said Nutarasungnik was at her third skills competition and was still amazed by what she was able to learn in her photography workshops.

Each of the Arviat students finished their skills assignments on time and were praised for their efforts, he said.

Okatsiak, in particular, was singled-out and supported by hairstyling technical chair Suzanne Laliberte.

“Mallory (Okatsiak) was supposed to go two days early with Sarah (Bruckschwaiger) for a big workshop for the hairstyling competitors to prepare but because of a blizzard, she never maid it,” said Billard.

“So, she never received any training until the afternoon before the competition when Suzanne (Laliberte) took her under her wing and taught her a number of things she missed in the workshop.”

When Okatsiak took silver, Laliberte was quick to point out that her effort was especially impressive considering she missed a lot of training.

There were more than a few moist eyes when the Mimico Canadiens of Mimico, Ont., departed Rankin Inlet after their 10-day stay in the community this past week.

The Mimico youths, their parents and chaperones were in Rankin for the second half of the Northern Exchange program, which is mainly funded by Experiences Canada through Heritage Canada.

Mimico hockey dad and coach Lee Barker said his first impression of Rankin Inlet was of the tremendous hospitality of the community.

He said everyone in the Mimico party felt like they were at home from the moment they arrived at the Rankin airport.

“The community itself is beautiful – the inuksuk, big sky and vistas – everyone in our group couldn't stop talking about the beauty of the place, but that came second to the beauty of the people and how warm they were to us,” said Barker. “We played a little hockey in Mimico and we played a little hockey

here – we're hockey teams and that's what we do – and I'm quite impressed with the level of hockey that's played in Rankin.

And I'm impressed by how passionate – what seems to be the whole community – everyone is over the game. Players, parents, fans, everyone here just seems to love the game.

“This hamlet has produced an NHL player and he's probably not going to be the last,” he added.

The exchange program is much more than two groups of young players from different parts of the country playing a few games of hockey against each other.

The youths involved in the program are exposed to a new culture, and they get the chance to live 10 days in an environment totally outside their element.

The exchange students range in age from 10 and 14. The Rankin youth have been staying in touch with their Toronto peers using their phones and the Internet since returning from Toronto about four months ago.

When the Mimico and Rankin youths saw each other at the Rankin airport, it was like they only saw each other the day before, said Barker.

“The families have done such a great job making everyone feel welcome that if there was any home sickness, it was quickly long gone,” he said. “Many of our kids have never experienced the outdoor life of having hunting-and-fishing skills, – part of the richness of growing up in Rankin Inlet is that you gain all these practical skills – but navigating a subway platform is something a child in Rankin may not know how to do as easily as a kid from Toronto.

“It's really been fun teaching each other,” he added.

Barter said neither community would have been able to make their trip without the funding from Experiences Canada.

He said the organization also gave them a lot of great insight and advice on how to structure their trip.

“It's a pretty unique and special charity, and I'm very happy it exists and we had the opportunity to participate in it,” he said. “If any other communities want to do it, then they definitely should." bf l A ᐃᒻᒥᖕᓂᑦ m4WZz 9

There are times something not so hot happens in a Kivalliq hamlet and one’s positivity can take a fairly serious hit, depending on how long you’ve called the region home.

Then there are other times when something truly special goes down – big or small – and you become a total believer in the good in our communities once again.

The past two weeks in Rankin Inlet represents the latter.

Now, whether you look upon it as a big thing or a small thing is in most cases simply a matter of perspective.

Rankin Inlet was an extremely busy place the past two weeks with the Pakallak Tyme celebrations and the Rankin end of the Northern Exchange program taking place at the same time.

Planning, organizing and handling the load of activities that took place in this community over a 10-day period is not for the faint of heart.

Yet the community of Rankin Inlet rose to the occasion, and I would almost argue that a better job of juggling a myriad of responsibilities could scarcely be done.

A number of Kivalliq communities are benefitting from having most excellent recreation coordinators right now, and Rankin Inlet tops that list.

And the entire group of parents, coaches, organizers and neighbours who stepped up to accommodate the group from Mimico, Ont., during their stay in Rankin are to be commended for a job

very well done.

Ditto the hamlet’s recreation department. It was no easy task to keep everything rolling smoothly during those 10 days and not having events and activities running into one another. And, despite her modesty, summertime assistant recreation coordinator Tagalik Eccles played a large role in the success of Pakallak Tyme.

With David Clark’s attention split between the festivities and the exchange program – and then having to leave early to assume his duties as an assistant coach for the Team North squad competing at the National Aboriginal Hockey Championships in Membertou, N.S., from May 1 to 14 – Eccles did a quite admirable job steering the ship in his absence.

But really, more than anything or anyone, the success of the two events running in unison was a total community effort.

Even after almost 20 years of calling Rankin Inlet home, I still get, well, goosebumps when I see a large group of kids playing together outside with not a care in the world, laughter filling the air, and everything happening around them courtesy of volunteers or the hamlet’s recreation department.

The interactions I witnessed between the Mimico kids and the Rankin youths

was also pretty darn special.

A hefty number of these kids have become good friends and, if they lived in the same community, it wouldn’t be a stretch to imagine them as BFFs (best friends forever).

Most of the Ontario kids were dazzled by playing outside – Williamson Lake became a very special place to many of them – and when you put a 13-yearold city boy at the controls of a Ski-Doo; well, that’s the big time to that young dude, and you couldn’t wipe the smile off of his face with a large box of Kimwipes.

Freedom means many things to many people but with youth, the freedom bar is often set well within grasp and their original tastes of that freedom are sweet; quite sweet indeed.

So kudos to the community of Rankin Inlet for a job extremely well done in the face of a challenging, if funfilled, 10 days.

The laughter that rang out across the hamlet during that time period belonged to each and every person who did their share to make sure both the people who attended Pakallak Tyme and the kids in the Northern Exchange program had a most excellent time in our community.

Rise up and take a bow, people. You deserve it.

The Kivalliq was well-represented at the 13th Nunavut Skills Competition in Iqaluit on April 29.

Each student on the Arviat team took home a medal, including a bronze in aesthetics and silver medals in post-secondary carpentry, hairstyling, photography and video production being earned at the event.

Canadrill three-peats in Iqaluit

Rankin team edges Ottawa 5-4 to claim senior men’s title

Rankin Inlet (Team Canadrill) defeated Ottawa 5-4 in a dramatic shootout to claim the A Division of the 2018 Toonik Tyme senior men’s hockey championship in Iqaluit this past month.

It was Canadrill’s thirdstraight Toonik Tyme championship.

There were five teams in the A Division of this year’s event and 10 teams in the B Division.

Two teams from Iqaluit and one from Kuujjuaq, Que., rounded out the A Division.

Rankin eliminated Iqaluit’s QC Hunters in their semifinal.

Canadrill forward David Clark said the hockey was fantastic in this year’s tournament and having five strong teams in one division made for very close games that were a lot of fun to play.

“The games were highly competitive in both the A Division and the B Division,” said Clark. “We went through the tournament undefeated, but we had a lot of very close games.”

“Early in the round-robin we handled the Kuujjuaq team quite easily, but then they came back and beat the two Iqaluit teams, so all the games in our division were really close except for maybe one or two.”

Canadrill goaltender Jomar Cruz had an excellent tournament in Iqaluit, said Clark.

The team also had timely scoring during the weekend, especially when they really needed a big goal.

“All in all it was a really good team effort, but our goaltender really came up big for us over there,” said Clark.

“And, I must admit, it felt good to go over there and win their tournament for a third-straight time. Hopefully, next year, we’ll be going for four in a row.”

Clark said the Rankin players keep coming back to the Toonik Tyme tournament because it’s a great way to end the hockey season.

He has a lot of family and friends in Iqaluit and he always looks forward to seeing them during the tournament, he said.

“We’d like to see Iqaluit start coming back to the Rankin tourney (which is now the Terence Tootoo Memorial) of course, because the community gets so pumped over the Iqaluit versus Rankin rivalry,” he said. “I really don’t know if we’ll see Iqaluit back at the Rankin tournament – and it would be nice if they came – but, at this point in my career, I’m not too worried about what other people are doing or not doing.”
