tion in Rankin Inlet on April 8 for a chance to represent Nunavut at a national competition this coming month.

Junior Rangers from Arviat, Whale Cove, Chesterfield Inlet and Sanikiluaq took part in the regional competition, with the Arviat team of Liam Arloo, Jaime Copland, Pauline Sewoee, Shania Kritaqlilu and Paulie Issumatarjuak Jr. taking top spot.

Issumatarjuak Jr. also took the Top Marksman Award.

The Arviat Junior Rangers were coached by Julianna Aningat.

The Rankin Inlet 3019 cadet corps also participated in the competition in an unofficial capacity.

Cpt. Waheed Johnson of the First Canadian Rangers Patrol Group in Yellowknife said the highest scoring team from competitions in Yellowknife, Rankin Inlet and Iqaluit will represent Nunavut at the national competition in St. Catharines, Ont., on May 5 and 6.

He said the final results will be tabulated and the winning team announced this week, following the third regional competition in Iqaluit April 14 to 15.

“This is a great opportunity for the Junior Rangers to develop safe-firearm-handling abilities and practices, and it’s also a good way to teach self-discipline to the Junior Rangers,” said Johnson.

“At a competition such as this, they’re learning to control their excitement, remain steady, and make sure the target acquisition and sight picture are perfect before actually squeezing that shot. The competition is also an opportunity for them to meet Junior Canadian Rangers from other patrols in the area who they normally don’t get to see during the year,” he continued.

Johnson said marksmanship covers all three of the circles of learning for the Junior Rangers, and also ties into traditional and life skills the youth can apply to hunting, harvesting and being able to provide for their families.

Some of those skills involve properly butchering and harvesting the meat from a caribou or other animal, he said, which allows the individual to provide for their families.

“We were very happy with the number of Junior Rangers who attended the Yellowknife and Rankin competitions,” said Johnson. “There were only a couple of patrols that couldn’t make it due to bad weather in their communities. Overall the competitions were very well-received this year, and that always makes me very happy to see.”

Since starting this type of shooting competition a few years back, Johnson said he’s noticed a lot of the patrols have put in an extra effort to have regular training nights for the Junior Rangers to perfect their marksmanship techniques.

As a result, the Junior Canadian Rangers are getting a greater opportunity to actually participate in their local patrols then they had before, he said.

“It’s a matter of pride for them to represent their community, territory and the First Canadian Ranger Patrol Group at the national level,” he said.

“Our patrol group actually claimed the title once many years ago, but right now we’re more focused on having one team from a community go as opposed to the top 15 or so individuals from across the territories. The best shots are not necessarily going the whole time, but we want to try to encourage that pride and so forth for the community and the Junior Rangers,” he added.

Canadian Ranger Nellie Scharer helped organize and run the Rankin competition.

She said she was very impressed with what she saw from the Junior Rangers, especially when they had to shoot the entire competition on one day, April 8.

“The competition was excellent and the Junior Rangers never once asked to stop and take a break during the oneday competition,” said Scharer. “They went right through the whole day shooting and I thought that was just awesome. Their behaviour was excellent all weekend and I found them all to be pretty good kids.”

Scharer said the Arviat shooters were very excited to find out that they had won.

She said she wished the cadets were also officially allowed to take part in the competition and represent Nunavut if they won.

“Our cadets are very good shooters and I’d love to see them be able to officially compete with the Junior Rangers,” she said.

The Tusarvik students also made green hearts and posters to show that their thoughts are with the town of Humboldt during this most difficult time.

Magic show Nunavut Magician Brian Glow, the ‘master of illusion and fun,’ is beginning the first leg of a Nunavut tour with a stop in Gjoa Haven this week.

Glow, who has performed in a number of Nunavut communities, is embarking on his fifth tour and, this time out, he is joining with Influencers Motivating Influencers.

Influencers Motivating Influencers has been touring across Nunavut presenting to schools and communities about mental health, goal setting, self-esteem and anti-bullying for the past five years. The dates and Kivalliq communities Glow will be visiting as part of his tour are yet to be announced.

Glow’s tour is made possible by the assistance and sponsorship of First Air, Calm Air, the Kivalliq Inuit Association, Arctic Co-op and Inns North, as well as the participation of each community the team visits.

Bravo race Arviat The Arviat Bravo Club has announced that the 15th annual Extreme Bravo Race will be held in Arviat on April 28 and 29.

Large crowds and plenty of excitement have been the norm during the event’s 15-year run in the community, and head organizer Pierre Ikakhik said this year’s race promises to be no exception.

Dance time Arviat The community of Arviat hosted the second annual Phillip Kigusiutnak Memorial Square Dance Showdown this past weekend, from April 12 to 15.

Square dance teams from Gjoa Haven, Rankin Inlet and Naujaat, among others, travelled to Arviat to compete in the event. Final results from the showdown were unavailable as of press time.

Season over Rankin Inlet The hamlet of Rankin Inlet officially closed its arena for the season this past Friday, April 13. The grand old lady of Rankin is nearing its end as the focal point of the community, as construction on Rankin’s new arena recently got underway.

A Belgian man attempting a fossil-fuel free trip from Nunavut to Argentina made stops in Chesterfield Inlet and Rankin Inlet this past week.

Arnaud Maldague, 29, of Brussels, Belgium, left Kugaaruk on Jan. 4 on a journey that will see him ski, cycle, kayak, sail, walk and even horseback ride over 30,000 kilometres until he arrives in Ushuaia, Argentina, in about two-and-a-half years.

He is undertaking this incredible challenge to promote ecological initiatives.

This week, he left Rankin on his way to Whale Cove and Churchill, Man. He intends to reach Winnipeg in late May. From there he'll make his way to the Mississippi River to continue his journey by kayak, he said.

However, progress has been slower than expected, he said.

"I underestimated the hills and mountains between Kugaaruk and Naujaat," he said.

"I also underestimated the effect of the heavy load I was pulling."

In fact, Maldague said some people in Kugaaruk thought he would fail on his trek to Rankin Inlet because of the cold. Others suggested he was going to get lost, and they'd have to come and rescue him, he said.

“It was difficult at first because it was -40C right from the start,” he said. “I had no adaptation time from, say,

“Someday I'd like to go back to Kugaaruk, just to show them that I was able to do it.”

Despite this, most of the people he's met along the way have been welcoming, he said.

"Inuit people have been super kind to me all along the road," he said. "The fact they have been living here for centuries...and endure this hard climate year after year is something incredible and that

inspires me a lot."

He has already had two bear encounters on the land, he said.

The first one involved a bear following him for a while, which had him very nervous, but the second was far more dangerous as he woke up to find the animal shaking his tent and trying to drag it away after he failed to set up his alarm system.

“I was lazy and didn't do it, which was very stupid of me because I had seen bear tracks earlier in the day,” he said. “I woke some time during the

night with the tent shaking and being dragged along the ice.

“I got my tent zipper open, starting screaming really loudly, and shot a flare up over him and, by the time I got out of the tent, the bear was gone,” said Maldague.

“You can bet I set my alarm system up every night after that,” he said.

He has dubbed the venture the "Manneken" trip, a Flemish word which means little guy.

“My dreams of this trip evolved while I finished my studies (in economics),” said Maldague. “I wanted to change environments and travel on snow and water (and) use the wind.”

Maldague lost his mother a few years back, but said he receives lots of moral support from his family.

He said he's been financing most of the trip out of his own pocket, but has managed to pick up a couple of sponsors along the way.

“So far I've received sponsorships for my clothing and my kite, but everything else I'm financing myself,” he said.

Maldague has a Facebook page and website. He's also keeping a journal to record his experiences.

Arviat’s performing arts and media community has been benefiting from a bit of national exposure.

The spotlight cast a few rays of bright light in Arviat’s direction recently when a documentary made in the community, called Dancing Towards the Light, earned filmmakers Kitra Cahana and Ed Ou a Canadian Screen Award for Best Photography in a News or Information Program, Series or Segment.

The documentary focused on the youth of Arviat turning to the healing power of dance as a means to cope with the community’s alarming number of suicides, which has been a long-standing problem in the Eastern Arctic.

In 2004 the five-year average rate of suicide was 121 per 100,000 people, which was nearly 11 times the national rate, according to Statistics compiled from Nunavut’s chief coroner.

Arviat’s annual dance competitions have become legendary (the Sila Rainbow Dance Competition and the Phillip Kigusiutnak Memorial Square Dance Showdown), and are seen as a way to help folks affected by suicide to heal.

The Arviat Film Society also enjoyed time in the spotlight when it was mentioned recently in a Time kids booklet, Wi-Fi Around the World, while a story on the John Arnalukjuak Drama Club, Bright Lights and Blue Steps, written by Keith J. Collier, was published in the Newfound-

John Arnalukjuak Drama Club and Arviat Film Society member and instructor Gord Billard said it has been a benefit to local organizations to see the situation in Arviat highlighted.

“People are intrigued by the North and any opportunity to educate them that we’re not living in iglus, we have painfully slow Internet at a high cost, and we pay unbelievable prices for a roast at the store – all of this getting out there can only help make things better for us as more people become outraged or concerned over what they learn,” he said.

Billard said any attention is good, but attention that highlights the issues people in the North have to deal with can serve to expedite positive change.

He said the young members of the Arviat Film Society feel a strong sense of pride in seeing the society mentioned in prominent publications.

“As soon as the Time book was made known to us and Ivano Aggark brought a couple of the booklets that Jamie Bell sent him to a meeting,” he said. “I showed them to all my students and they were all impressed and wanted to have a good look at them. People think it’s pretty darn cool."

The outpouring of love and support for the loved ones of those who died in the horrific crash that claimed many members of the Humboldt Broncos junior hockey team earlier this month has been heartwarming to say the least.

About $10.5 million has been donated to the cause through a GoFundMe campaign and the entire country has shown its support through undertakings such as Jersey Day this past week, and the leaving of hockey sticks outside doors in a nod to Humboldt.

The tiny community, the province of Saskatchewan and the Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League face a huge challenge in healing and carrying on, but carry on they must.

One of the reasons this tragedy struck so close to the heart of so many Canadians is that with hockey being ‘Canada’s game,’ a large number of people can relate very strongly to what happened.

From coast to coast to coast across this great nation of ours, multitudes of both male and female hockey players have their own memories of riding the team bus to an opponent’s hometown.

One of the images that struck closest to home for me showed a DVD of the movie Slap Shot on the ground among the wreckage at the scene of the accident.

The annual jappa-making program with senior students at Tuugaalik High School wrapped up in Naujaat this past month.

Eight students were selected to work with five sewers to make their own jackets in this year’s program.

The jappa-making program also received a boost this year in the form of a $2,600 donation from a non-profit group based in Toronto, Ont., called the Spirituelle Divas who were interested in supporting a sewing program for youth.

Group spokesperson Rosalind Smith said the Spirituelle Divas had been hearing that people in Nunavut, especially women, have been having a difficult time recently and wanted to do something to help.

by Julia MacPherson She said the group originally connected with a Ryerson Naujaat University program that was trying to start a collective with the women in Naujaat but, for whatever reason, the collective didn’t get off the ground.

“We had collected the money anyway and we wanted to do something good with it, so I ended-up speaking with Julia (MacPherson, vice-principal at Tuugaalik) on some different things we might be able to do to help at the high school school in Naujaat,” said Smith.

After learning about the sewing program they got “very excited” about the fact that they could help, she said.

“We like to help people who really want it, and who are able to move on in life with something that you helped create,” she said. “You want something important to happen from what you do.”

Smith said the group had been originally talking about a sewing program with the collective, so the high school program kind of fit the same bill.

She said the Toronto group also really liked the fact this program was helping students.

“We sent the money to Julia for the program, and she has since sent us some photographs from the program and they really look great,” she said.

Since 2002, the Spirituelle Divas have championed a range of charitable initiatives, said Smith.

“Basically, we just thought we’d like to do things that help other people and not just be helping ourselves all the time,” she said. “We also sent 350 bras to the women up there, but that’s a story for another time.”
