Ahiarmiut settle with federal government Arviat The Government of Canada has settled a 20-year-old claim filed by the Ahiarmiut Relocation Society, the group's lawyer has announced.

The society represents the interests of all Ahiarmiut who traditionally lived around Ennadai Lake. The majority of the group – which was forcibly relocated by the federal government several times for various reasons in the '40s and '50s – now lives in Arviat.

"The Government of Canada, while purporting to move the group for its own preservation, used the group as a political and commercial pawn to support companies operating in the area and for administrative purposes," the society's lawyer Steven Cooper stated in a news release.

"The relocations resulted in great hardship and the deaths of members of the group."

The only surviving elder from the original relocations, Mary Anowtalik, "is forced to recall horrific memories of starvation, death and deprivation," stated the lawyer.

The National Post reported the settlement is worth $5-million, with the money to be distributed to survivors, their descendants and go toward commemorative projects.

Karlik had bet Jean Kusugak that he could lose more weight than her in the biggest loser competition.

When Kusugak proved herself to be the top loser Karlik had to risk further gains by swallowing his pride and donning the Habs jersey, much to the delight of his fellow KIA workers.

Tapisa Tattuinee, 20, who graduated high school in Arviat as part of the Class of 2015, said she felt she'd enjoy the Students on Ice expedition because it offered her the chance to visit communities in the High Arctic, meet people from all over the world and learn more about the Arctic environment.

She said everyone got along well and that produced a positive environment for a large group of students eager and willing to learn about the Arctic.

"I really enjoyed the workshops on the expedition," said Tattuinee.

"You got to choose which workshops you wanted to attend, and I was most interested in those dealing with the environment, Greenlandic culture and things in the ocean.

"I really learned a lot while we were on the ship because it was new information to me and it was all about where I'm from.

"I was shocked, really, to learn some of the things I did about Greenlandic culture and some of the things that are going on in the environment today. I really learned a lot each day."

Tattuinee said she began an environmental technology program this past year, but she plans to attend the new third year (academic and career development) of the NS program this semester.

She said it's going to be pretty cool to be part of the first group of students to take the new third-year program.

"I highly recommend Students on Ice because it puts you on the sea and creates a comfortable environment to learn about the Arctic, different cultures, the environment and climate change.

"You learn a lot of cool things on that ship in a short period of time.

"For me, personally, being part of Students on Ice showed me what I want to do for a career, and that's to take social work so I can help Inuit in Nunavut.

Cadet program on the ropes Corps on verge of collapse after 20 years in Naujaat

The most successful cadet corps in Nunavut of the past few years faces an existential crisis this month.

The 3055 Royal Canadian Army Cadet Corps (RCACC) in Naujaat was dealt a devastating blow earlier this year when its commanding officer, Lloyd Francis, announced he was leaving the community after five years at the helm of the corps.

And, despite an exhaustive search, no one has shown a willingness to step up and keep the program running.

So, at a time when the corps should be holding weekly training sessions and planning for upcoming courses and competitions, members of the 3055 watch helplessly from the sidelines as time ticks away on their beloved award-winning corps.

Francis said there's a good chance this is the end of the 3055 RCACC in Naujaat, at least for now.

He said with nobody coming forward to take over the program, things are not looking good for the corps' immediate future.

"Everything is in place for someone to take over and I really figured someone would step up," said Francis.

"It does require someone to become a cadet instructor cadre officer, so one person does need to step forward and go and do the training, but there's people in Winnipeg willing to work with anyone who wants to do that and help them through the process.

"It's sad to see a program like this that I – and those

who came before me – put a lot of work into just go by the wayside, especially when everything is there for someone to take over.

"The kids are awesome and supportive, and the hamlet and the Naujaat business community fully support the program, so there's people there willing to lend support and help out."

The 3055 RCACC had 35 cadets out for its final parade after averaging between 20-to-30 cadets for every meeting or function during the past year.

And, as of this past week, there were still two cadets in the south representing Naujaat.

Warrant Officer Jack Kopak was lending a hand at the cadet summer training centre in Connaught, Ont., while Warrant Officer Neevie Kidlapik was participating in the Yukon Paddle, canoeing from Whitehorse to Dawson City in the Yukon.

Francis said the Naujaat cadets are holding their collective breath, hoping against hope someone will step up in the 11th hour to take control of the corps.

He said at this point, the corps' future is pretty much down to a Hail Mary pass or prayer.

"Capt. Erin McKinley, who works in Winnipeg, is planning to travel to Naujaat during the first few weeks in September to see if she can recruit any staff, but I was trying to get staff there for the past year and I wasn't very successful.

"Having no cadet corps in Naujaat will take a lot of opportunities away from

these kids, including having something positive to do one or two times every week, learning new skills, increasing their self-confidence and self-esteem, going on land trips and participating in community service.

"I can safely say more than $500,000 was spent on various trips for the Naujaat kids during my five years there, and, for many of them – unless they travelled to Winnipeg on medical – it was their first time out of Naujaat or, at the very least, Nunavut.

"So, the demise of the corps would take away the ability for these kids – all totally funded by the cadet program – to get out and actively explore the world around them, which, in turn, can motivate them to go down south to attend college or university."

Naujaat senior administrative officer (SAO) Rob Hedley said as an SAO he views the demise of the 3055 RCACC as the unfortunate loss of a solid asset for the community.

He said, to him personally, the collapse of the corps would be a sad, sad day for Naujaat.

"We've tried – even long before Lloyd left – to see what we could do to resurrect the program and find somebody to get in there and keep it running – even at a diminished capacity if need be – for at least another year," said Hedley.

"Unfortunately, it's just not working out."

Hedley said the qualifications needed to run the program have made their search for Francis's successor more difficult.

He said although the immediate future looks bleak, he's not prepared to totally throw in the towel just yet.

"I'm still actively trying to get the program going in some capacity this year, and I do have people who could possibly do the instructing part, but what we need is a commander – someone who has a minimum of Grade 12 and can go and take the required training – and that's

really been the difficult part to get done.

"The best-case scenario would be for me to find someone over the next little bit to take the officer's training so that we only have a three-orfour-month lull in the program, but that's being really optimistic at this point.

"Our mayor is a big advocate for the cadet program and we'll continue beating the drum looking for someone,

but the people in the community who would probably do it, including myself, are involved with so many other things that they just don't have the time.

"We don't want to lose a program that keeps kids engaged in positive activities and makes them better citizens, so we'll keep beating the bushes for however long it takes until we find someone to resurrect it."

Female talent, not tokens, behind Leafs hires Northern News Services

With NHL teams slated to open their training camps over the next two weeks, love them or hate them, a large number of Kivalliq hockey fans have their eyes fixed on the Toronto Maple Leafs.

For members of Leafs Nation, it's a matter of is this really our time? Are we ready to finally take the next step and make a run at ending one of professional sports longest futility streaks and bring Lord Stanley home at long last?

For those who despise all things Maple Leafs, it's a matter of continually pointing to the Leafs defensive core and screaming at the top of their lungs that Toronto cannot take the Cup with the six D-men currently slated to patrol the Leafs blue-line.

And, of course, the focal point of the increased Maple Leafs hubbub is the signing of free agent all-world centre John Tavares during the off-season.

But, as giddy as the Tavares signing has made the Toronto faithful, there is far more going on in Leafs Land.

Sanikiluaq The parting with hockey stalwarts Lou Lamoriello and Mark Hunter, coupled with the naming of Kyle Dubas as general manager, signals a major move away from old-school thinking for the Leafs, who have gone all-in with the modern – and so far exceptionally successful – approach employed by Dubas. The embracing of the analytical side of the game and the fulladaptation of Dubas's preferred method of hiring the best person for the job regardless of race, creed, colour or gender has the Leafs moving to the front of the NHL pack

in gender diversity.

Harold Ballard's Leafs these ain't!

This past week Toronto announced the hiring of Hayley Wickenheiser as the Maple Leafs assistant director of player development.

And, make no mistake about it, this is another shrewd and effective move by Dubas.

Wickenheiser, 40, is the greatest female hockey player of all time and the woman knows the game top to bottom and inside-out.

Not only has she been around the sport for almost her entire life, she was also around top professional players and some of the top coaches the game has ever seen for her entire professional and Olympic (four gold, one silver) playing career.

And Wickenheiser wasn't Dubas's only female hire.

The 32-year-old wunderkind created a new position within the Leafs structure (director of athlete well-being and performance) this summer and promptly named Dr. Meg Popovic to the post.

And, as if to further convince the masses of his convictions, Dubas named Noelle Needham as an amateur scout in the U.S. Midwest, making her the first female member of the Leafs' rather vast scouting array.

Add to that longtime Leafs skating coach Barb Underhill and Toronto is making a bold statement during the Dubas era –

the organization is all-in to win in the here and now and it's going to hire the people it believes are best suited to help it achieve that goal.

Leafs fans rejoice.

This is a radical and much-welcomed departure from the days when Toronto – again, under Ballard's direction – was the last NHL team to allow female reporters in the dressing room.

As reported by the Toronto Star, Wickenheiser has already gone on the public record to say she would have had no interest in the job had she thought for a second she was a token hire.

Wickenheiser stated publicly, "The biggest reason why I was intrigued about this role was that Kyle (Dubas) was interested in me, not to hire a woman, but to hire somebody who can do the job."

You just have to love that if you're a Leafs fan, or just someone who shares the belief the best person should be given a shot at the job, whether they're a traditional hire or not. I am a Leafs fan and I am also a believer in the direction Dubas, Leafs president Brendan Shanahan and head coach Mike Babcock are taking the club.

It's a bold new era for the Maple Leafs that has the team surrounding its players with a winning culture not seen around the club since the heady days of the 1950s and 1960s.

Cadet corps needs to continue READERS Write From: Lloyd Francis Former CO of 3055 RCACC Naujaat

Dear editor, Naujaat youth will lose a program they love and call their own if the 3055 Royal Canadian Army Cadet Corps (RCACC) shuts down this year.

First and foremost, I want to congratulate the cadets who successfully completed training this summer, especially Jack Kopak, who was offered a staff cadet position in Connaught, Ont., after his participation in an exchange to Europe.

Congrats also to Lou Kopak and Neevie Kidlapik for completing staff cadet positions in Whitehorse, and to Tigumiaq Haqpi, Bridgette Malliki, Kasandra Katokra and Melanie Kaunak for completing their six-week courses – expedition instructor and fitnessand-sports instructor respectively. You should all be super proud of these accomplishments!

Cadets would normally start this week.

Unfortunately, there are no adults living in Naujaat committed to running the cadet program. At least one person is needed to enroll as a cadet instructor.

I find this very disappointing because of the large number of opportunities Naujaat youth have from this program. Opportunities that many of you, or members of your families, have taken part in.

Personally, I think the program should be run by a permanent Inuit resident of the community. The community can't rely on teachers to run activities because there is such a high turnover of southern staff almost every year.

During the past five years, cadets have travelled to six different countries and almost every province and territory, with 20 to 25 going to summer camp each year.

Less than six months after celebrating its 20th anniversary in Naujaat on March 7, the 3055 RCACC looks to be shutting down with no one able to take command of the community's cadet program. mess dinners, sports, land trips, band seminars and leadership workshops – and no other program offers these types of opportunities or is this comprehensive.

I have done my best to incorporate Inuit culture into the program and corps elders Uluta Ivalutanar, Alice Nanorak and Susan Mablik fully support the program.

Cadets provide Naujaat youth with a place to be and activities to participate in. They take pride wearing their uniform and representing Naujaat when they leave the community.

It also provides leadership opportunities for older cadets, as they mentor the younger cadets and essentially run the program as they teach.

Travelling also provides opportunities that many cadets wouldn't have otherwise, and allows them to see more of the world and make new friends.

We have won top cadet corps in the entire region in 2015-2016 and in 2016-2017 and have been mentioned in the Nunavut Legislature and in the news many times.

3055 RCACC has helped put Naujaat on the map!

I spent five amazing years running this program and have had some of the best experiences in my life. I am thankful for these experiences and the cadets who made them possible.

Is it a lot of work? Yes. But the program can pay up to six people, so the work would be spread out if six people get together to keep it going.

The kids understood there would be changes with my departure, but they should still have a program to call their own. You have the support you need to make it work if you are willing to put in the time and effort for the kids.

The only requirement is no criminal record, with at least one of the six potential staff members being a Grade 12 graduate, under the age of 60 and willing to become an officer cadet.

You are letting these kids down by not keeping this program alive! And, if it shuts down, it is unlikely it will be opened again.

Please consider stepping up for this program. The corps needs you. Do your part.

Rankin retail manager recognized for commitment to Co-op

Kissarvik Co-op retail store manager Glenn Woodford was recognized for his 20 years of service to Arctic Co-operatives during a special ceremony for long-service awards held in Rankin Inlet on Aug. 17.

Kissarvik's David Bond received his five-year plaque during the proceedings.

Woodford, 53, has spent the past 14.5 years in Rankin Inlet after joining the Co-op team at the age of 33.

He said at the time he joined Arctic Co-operatives, his reasons for applying to do so were the same as many Canadians.

"I simply needed the job at the time, but then as I learned more about the organization I decided this was the career path for me," said Woodford.

"Arctic Co-operatives is community-minded and its goal is to help people.

"I truly appreciate that about this organization, as opposed to the corporate structure.

"Our intention is to run a busi-

ness like a business, of course, but the goal that's always in mind is the betterment of the community."

Woodford met his wife, Sheena, while posted in Pond Inlet. The couple married in Rankin Inlet in 2009 and have three children together – Shelly, 17, Troy, 14, and Eileen, 11 months.

He shows his pragmatic side once again when asked to offer some insight into how one successfully navigates 20 years in the Arctic with the same company.

"You get married and have to take care of your family," said Woodford

as a matter of fact.

"You have to look after things.

"I still enjoy going to work every day because there's always new challenges and new things happening.

"There's really never a dull moment with our operation."

Woodford said he's made a lot of good friends during his time in Rankin and he loves being out on the land.

He said he enjoys hunting, fishing and spending time at the family cabin, while his family, being Inuit, enjoy being out on the land as much as anyone.

"I appreciate this recognition – which I look at as being a kind of over-and-above thank you for the work I've done – and I'm quite happy being with a company that's so community-minded and people orientated. I've worked in the corporate environment and I'm not interested in going back there. I prefer to work in the Co-op because it's driven by its membership.

"I enjoy working with our core staff in Rankin because they're faithful to us, and they appreciate the Co-op and want to see it do well, and I appreciate that."

Rodeo time in Chesterfield Inlet RCMP-sponsored event a huge hit with local kids

Hordes of local kids came out to take part in the largest bike rodeo in recent memory in Chesterfield Inlet on Aug. 17.

The event was sponsored by the Chesterfield Inlet detachment of the RCMP. Cpl. Craig Lowe said the Chester detachment tries to hold the bike rodeo on an annual basis.

He said the turnout for this year's event was phenomenal for Chester, with around 60 kids coming out to participate in the event.

"One of the health-care workers who was giving us a hand with running the event said it was one of the biggest turnouts she's ever seen," said Lowe.

"Those kids who had bikes brought them but a lot of the children didn't have their own bikes, so we had a little obstacle course set up for them to run around and get a little candy afterward," said Lowe.

"We had four races in total, with two running races between the male and female kids, and two bike races also between the males and females.

"We had a $50 gift certificate for each winner donated to the bike

rodeo by the Northern store."

Lowe said RCMP officers talked to the kids a little bit about road safety and bike safety during the rodeo.

He said they covered things like always wearing their helmets when riding their bikes, and always looking both ways before crossing a street and when dealing with traffic.

"We also made a point to remind the kids that just because you don't own a bike yourself, that doesn't mean you shouldn't practice good safety habits or help to watch out for other people.

"The kids had a real blast during the rodeo.

"It was held right after school around supper time and we had hot dogs for them all, so they really enjoyed themselves.

"Most of the kids actually had two hot dogs, so it was also nice to send them home with a full stomach at the end of it all."

Lowe said while it's very important for youth to see the communityinvolved side of the officers, they already have a great relationship with the Chester community, in his opinion.

"We're always out talking with people and doing stuff in the community.

"The bike rodeo is just another example of how much we really

enjoy the community and the people of the community seem to enjoy us, which is just the way we like it.

"The kids are pretty outgoing when it comes to interacting with us during events such as this.

"In my two years in Chesterfield Inlet there's just no comparison between the amount of good things and bad things that have happened here. It's been almost entirely all good."
