Facts of Rankin sex assault released ahead of sentencing Rankin Inlet A territorial justice has released the facts that will form the basis for his sentencing of a Rankin Inlet man who was found guilty of sexual assault earlier this summer.

On May 30, Lee Jordan Nauya was convicted of sexually assaulting a woman in September 2014.

The woman's name is protected by a publication ban.

According to the facts of the case, which were made public on July 16, Nauya and another man forced her to drink alcohol after running into them in town.

The woman testified that her hands were held behind her back by one of the men while Nauya poured liquor down her throat.

After the assault was committed, Nauya left the woman on the side of the road. She later ended up in a blackout state in a Winnipeg hospital.

In his assessment of the facts, Justice Earl Johnson said he did not believe Nauya had a premeditated plan and that he would not consider his post-offence conduct in the sentencing.

Johnson is expected to deliver his sentence in Iqaluit on August 20.

Midnight sun co-ed soccer league Baker Lake Baker Lake is looking for teams and players who want to take part in the community's co-ed soccer league.

The league will be open to players 16 years and up. Each team will be allowed eight players and three subs, with the cost being $20 per player.

Games will be played on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays at 7 p.m.

The deadline to register is July 26.

The Nunavut Land Claim Agreement ensures Inuit the right to harvest wildlife without restrictions.

Towtongie said hunters should be able to hunt as much as they want in order to feed their families but that there should be some form of regulation in place to keep the commercial sale of caribou under control.

"There has to be control and monitoring and we need to see if a quota should be set aside for commercial purposes."

Any changes to the wildlife would require a consensus from the local HTO, regional wildlife board, Nunavut Tunngavik Inc. (NTI) and the territorial government.

"They have to come together for an emergency meeting sometime and have a strategy session and do it rationally and logically, because if we just observe what's happening we're going to be without our herd," she said.

Keewatin Wildlife Board chair Stanley Adjuk could not be reached for comment.

Rankin HTO chair Brian Sigurdson said he could not comment on the matter at the moment because he would have to discuss the issue with other stakeholders first.

NTI president Aluki Kotierk was at a conference out of town and unable to comment.

"With the loss of our elders we're getting irresponsible hunters," she said. "Some hunters are professional, they know what kind of caribou to kill, but some are not."

During the migration over the past few weeks, Kivalliq News has heard numerous complaints, ranging from whole caribou with gunshot wounds being left unharvested to youngsters chasing the herd on ATVs for fun and firing guns in the direction of people watching the migration.

Towtongie said more resources need to be devoted to enforcing the Wildlife Act, especially during migration season.

"We have to be rational and logical with how we deal with our needs for the future."

Tattoo artist joins pipeline protest Rankin Inlet woman offered support to Kinder Morgan blockade following workshop in B.C.

Ever since Ippiksaut Friesen started learning how to do traditional Inuit tattoos a year ago, she has travelled around Canada to share her practice with people.

When the Rankin Inlet artist was invited to take part in a tattoo workshop in British Columbia by Indigenous activist Kanahus Manuel in July, she knew it was an opportunity she couldn't pass up.

Little did she know she would find herself in the midst of a headline-making protest against the Kinder Morgan pipeline that would lead to Manuel's arrest.

Friesen first met Manuel during a month-long tattoo gathering in Kelowna, B.C. last September. During her most recent workshop in North Thompson Provincial Park, B.C. things started off smoothly. Over the course of three days Friesen gave tattoos to a handful of women, including one who had been waiting 20 years to get hers.

"There's a lot of pride and joy when people receive their traditional markings," said Friesen. "I feel it's really healing for people."

Following the workshop Friesen planned to travel around and maybe go to Vancouver to visit friends. But Manuel and her group of Tiny House Warriors, who move their trailered homes around to create blockades against the Kinder Morgan pipeline within unceded Secwepemc Territory, decided they were going to set up camp for a

protest in the provincial park.

That's when Friesen decided she would stay and help support the protest against the pipeline, which was recently purchased by the federal government for $4.5 billion. Friesen said it's not just the pipeline itself that the Secwepemc women are worried about, but the man camps that are creeping up along the highway.

"A lot of people have a missing and murdered Indigenous woman story. It's something that has been on my mind a lot recently. Being there with those women was the least I could do in the moment."

Friesen said the week she ended up with the blockade was tense. At times there were police helicopters flying overhead and people were constantly trying to harass and confront the group who were peacefully camped out in the park.

"Just the amount of racism that was happening there, that kind of shocked me," she said. "It's not right that they're hurting people that are just protecting the land and the water."

The night before Friesen was supposed to fly back to Nunavut, she ended up leaving the camp. The next morning she woke up to a Facebook livestream from Manuel, who was being arrested by RCMP. She rushed back to the campgrounds to offer her support, but by the time she got there the police were already dismantling the blockade.

Manuel was eventually released and charged with obstruction of justice. The livestream of the arrest has

Since returning home, Friesen has been having trouble trying to digest what

happened. She said she is staying in touch with the women she met, many of whom currently fear for their safety.

"It was scary," she said.

"I'm just watching the stuff they post and hoping that they're safe."

Kivalliq caribou: what do you have to lose?

What do Northern Quebec, Southern British Columbia, the Northwest Territories and Baffin Island have in common?

All four regions once supported bountiful caribou herds which have now been reduced to the verge of extinction.

Earlier this year Quebec's government announced it would let the last 18 caribou in the Val-d'Or herd die off, because it would cost $76 million over 50 years to try and save it.

In May, the federal government ordered the B.C. government to intervene to save what is left of its 3,800 southern mountain caribou, which have been classified as under "imminent threat."

Sanikiluaq The case of Baffin Island is no less shocking. The herd which Inuit once depended on for food has been limited to a hunting quota of just 250 since its population dropped to just 5,000 animals in 2014.

Which bring us to the Kivalliq where the mighty Qamanirjuaq caribou roam.

With a population of more than 250,000 at last count, the Qamanirjuaq are arguably the only healthy caribou herd remaining in all of North America.

As impressive as the herd is, it's nothing like it used to be. Thirty years ago they were 500,000 strong – twice the current population.

Rankin's first fastball league a hit New sport in town has youngsters slugging it out to improve their game

The sounds of car horns honking and children cheering could be heard at the ball diamond all weekend long as Rankin Inlet's newest sports league wrapped up its year with a three-day tournament.

The best-of-five youth fastball series ended up going the distance requiring all five games to decide a winner between the Rankin Red Sox and the Blue Jays.

The Red Sox took a two game lead early on in the series, but the Blue Jays managed to claw their way back to tie the series up.

The fifth and deciding game went all the way down to the wire with the Blue Jays down three runs in the bottom of the final inning and one last chance at bat.

After scoring two runs and with two outs, the bases were loaded.

With just one run needed to tie the game up the batter smashed a ball to the shortstop who was able to make a play at second base to win the game and the series.

Rankin has T-ball on offer for young children and softball for adults and youth, but up until this year the community didn't have the option of playing fastball. That was until Robert Kabvitok and his wife Holly Mercer entered into the picture.

The couple started organizing

a few fastball games last summer because their son Kayden Mercer is obsessed with baseball. This year they decided to try and form a proper league.

"We talked about it one night that we should start a fastball league for them," said Kabvitok. "There was T-ball but we wanted to try something Kayden wanted to do and that other kids want to do."

When they were looking to form a league, they approached longtime Rankin resident Dave Wiseman to see if he would help umpire and teach children the rules of the game.

"Robert and Holly got together and decided to get some T-shirts for the kids and get a league going and I didn't mind helping at all," said Wiseman.

At the start of the season they had enough boys and girls between the ages of 11 and 13 to start a league with two teams: the Blue Jays and the Red Sox. With just two teams in the league, Wiseman said the emphasis has been on teaching the players how to play.

In order to keep things fun they have been playing back-to-back series with teams being even out in between.

The end of the first three-game series saw a major shake-up to help balance things out. That was followed by a five-game series with the new teams taking the plate.

The Blue Jays ended up winning

the first two games, but the Red Sox clawed things back in the next two, forcing a fifth game to decide it all.

The Blue Jays got off to an early start but the Red Sox put up a fiverun inning in the middle of the game to keep things close.

The final inning saw the Jays pull away to mercy the Red Sox and win the series.

Kayden, who was the pitcher for the winning team, said the league has meant a lot to him and his friends. His hope is that one day he will be able to play in the MLB. "When I'm older I want to be an MLB player so I just got to work hard. The love of the game will hopefully take me there."

Wiseman, who grew up playing high level baseball in Nova Scotia, said he couldn't believe how fast the kids have picked up the game.

"Considering they only started a year, year and a half ago, it's amazing. Kids up here catch on so quick," said Wiseman, whose 12and 13-year-old boys each play on one of the teams.

The highlight of the summer for both teams was an official bestof-five tournament to end off the season, which took place on the weekend of July 20.

Wiseman said he hopes the popularity of fastball will continue to grow in Rankin so that one day they can take a team down south to compete in tournaments.
