Succeeding at their TASKs High school trades introduction enters fifth year in Baker Lake

About 75 senior students at Jonah Amitnaaq Secondary School (JASS) were immersed in the trades during the fifth annual Trades Awareness, Skills and Knowledge (TASK) week in Baker Lake.

Regular classes were put on hold from May 14 to 18 as students learned about the disciplines of mechanics, welding, culinary arts, electrical, plumbing and hairdressing.

The TASK week initiative is a partnership between Agnico Eagle Mines (AEM), the Government of Nunavut, the territorial Department of Education and Nunavut Arctic College (NAC).

The week allowed students to learn trades from AEM and NAC instructors through hands-on experience.

AEM community liaison coordinator Karen Yip said TASK week has evolved to the point where it now features some of AEM’s own Inuit Red Seal journeymen and apprentices as instructors, including some who were once students at JASS. She said the program has met with the approval of teachers, instructors and the students themselves.

“I’ve been told that TASK week has been the best-attended week of the entire school year,” said Yip. “The week gives students the opportunity to experience something new and interesting and they really enjoy the hands-on experience of being involved in the trades.”

Yip said one student was described as a “natural” by the instructor of the discipline she spent this past week in.

She said that type of positive reinforcement can be very motivating for a student.

“Even if she doesn’t choose to go into the electrical trade, she does have the opportunity to do so and succeed at it,” said Yip. “I would think the instructor’s remarks would be a good confidence builder for her.”

The number of Inuit instructors and assistant instructors involved in this year’s TASK week represents another step forward for the AEM initiative.

Yip said having Inuit instructors involved in the program further increases student interest and might also increase their confidence in succeeding at a trade as well.

“These are instructors the students can really relate to because they’ve grown up in the same kind of environment as they have,” she said.

“They may even have been students at their school and/or classmates of one of their family members, which, I think, can be both inspiring and motivating for these kids.”

YIP said AEM is happy about the increasing number of women who are choosing a career in the trades.

She said women make up 17 per cent of the national workforce in the mining industry, while AEM sits at 19 per cent and is striving for an even higher percentage moving forward.

“This year, we had the largest anticipated attendance in the disciplines of mechanics, culinary arts and hairdressing,” she said. “We have female students in the electrical discipline, and girls in both the mechanic and welding classes, as well as boys in the hairdressing discipline. We’re (AEM) quite proud of this initiative, and there’s been some talk of promoting it more within the company itself, and not just in Nunavut, but across the country so that more people are aware of these types of initiatives going on in Nunavut.”

Yip said TASK week is the type of program with the potential to provide benefits long after Meadowbank ceases to be a working mine and the company has moved on as trades training provides successful applicants with almost limitless opportunities.

“In just about any community you visit today in the Kivalliq, and across Nunavut for that matter, you recognize the need for more tradespeople,”

she said.

“These trades can be taken back to one’s home community, and students who achieve Red Seal certification can work anywhere in Canada with that certification,” she said.

“There’s great potential here through trades training... so the opportunities are out there.”

Yip said the company is still hoping to expand TASK week outside of Baker Lake and there’s a pos-

sibility that could happen as soon as the coming year.

“It could happen... but I don’t want to say something is going to happen when it may not,” she said.

“But, again, yes, we’re thinking we may be able to do something next year. We’ve had great interest from the other communities, so there’s a distinct possibility we may be able to include at least one additional community in the coming year.”

Rebuilding the fleet Chesterfield Inlet Students and staff members at Victor Sammurtok School began rebuilding the fleet for their qajaq program this past month. The group is using the $140,000 Arctic Inspiration Prize money awarded the program this past February.

The majority of the prize money is being used to rebuild the qajaq fleet and replace much-needed equipment, such as new floater suits for the student participants and the course instructors.

Call for nominations Kivalliq Nominations are now being accepted for the 2018 Arctic Inspiration Prize (AIP).

The AIP will award up to $3 million in 2018, which will be shared by up to 10 winning teams in three prize categories.

One prize of $1 million may be awarded to one exceptional team, while up to four teams will be awarded up to $500,000 each, and up to seven teams, with members 30 years of age or younger, will be awarded up to $100,000 each. The youth prize category seeks to inspire the next generation of Arctic innovators to develop projects and plans that address issues and opportunities relevant to them.

Potential projects can address any opportunities or challenges that are of importance to the Canadian Arctic and its peoples. A project can have one or more focus areas such as, but not limited to, education, training, health and wellness, environment and climate change, recreation, tourism, culture and economic development. Nominations will be accepted until October 15, 2018.

Program to run Rankin Inlet The community of Rankin Inlet will be hosting a Niqitsialiurniq program from May 28 to Aug. 31.

Selected participants will learn traditional Inuit and modern cooking skills, harvesting and food preparation skills.

They will also work with elders to gain traditional knowledge, and develop literacy, language and other essential skills. The program is being overseen by the Nunavut Literacy Council's Adriana Kusugak and Kelly Lindell in Rankin Inlet.

Thrift store Baker Lake The Abluqta Society opened the doors to a new thrift store in Baker Lake on Friday, May 11. The society had been planning the store's opening for about three years, and has also raised $30,000 to employ a store manager. The Baker thrift store is modelled after the Ikurraq Deacon's Cupboard in Rankin Inlet; an operation which sells good used clothing at greatly reduced prices and is also a food bank.

concept with our group – actually having two scientists in front of us who are sharing what their research is about, and then actually getting to go and see it,” he said. “This is something real that we can touch. We can listen to the scientists, watch what they’re doing and then talk to them.”

The scientists were patient and thorough in answering all the students’ questions to explain what they were trying to do with their research. The fact that they were female was also a benefit to the students in showing that there are no gender barriers in scientific research, said Brocklebank.

“I hope every school has a chance like this because it’s really exciting. It’s taking what you’re supposed to do in the curriculum, and then actually adding the human and physical elements,” he said.

“There were also things the kids said in the class that the scientists didn’t know, and things they said that we didn’t know, so I found the sharing of Western understanding and traditional knowledge about what’s going on quite interesting.

Coral Harbour shines at Super Soccer Girls team claims U19 territorial crown

The Coral Harbour U19 girls team romped its way to the territorial A Division banner at the Super Soccer tournament in Yellowknife May 4 to 6.

“The girls’ win was everything to the community and that’s super important to us because without the community we really wouldn’t be going anywhere,” said head coach Alyssa Whitney. “That tournament is the one they practice hard for two or three times a week and look so forward to attending. It’s definitely their Stanley Cup event of the year.”

Coral defeated Hay River’s Diamond Jenness High School by a score of 7-1 to claim A Division gold at the event. The Coral squad only lost one game during the tournament.

The Coral U15 boys team lost in its semifinal, while the Rankin Inlet U15 boys took silver, losing in the A final to St. Patrick’s High School of Yellowknife.

Whitney said the girls on the U19 team have been playing together for quite a number of years and know each other really well. It seems they’ve developed an innate sense of where their teammates are going to be on the

field at any given time, she said.

“They have a super-good connection with each other,” she said. “They worked super well both on and off the field, and that made a huge difference.”

Coral’s U15 girls won silver at last year’s Super Soccer tournament and about half the players from that team joined this year’s U19 squad, she said.

The level of competition this year was much tougher than what they’d faced in previous years, said Whitney.

“It seems to be the small towns have the better teams right now, so there was some major competition at this year’s event,” she said.

The bigger communities all had between two to four teams at this year’s Super Soccer tournament, which spread out their overall talent level quite a bit. Being a smaller community was actually an advantage to Coral because they were able to choose the best players from the entire community to make one strong team, said Whitney.

“Another advantage for us is having the use of the gym whenever we want, meaning we can practice anytime we want,” she said.

None of it would have been possible without their efforts, she said.

“We had to raise nearly $75,000 between the two teams for us to be able to go to Super Soccer,” said Whitney. “The community supports all our bake sales,

penny sales, bingo games and movie nights and, without that support, we would never be able to raise that kind of money to go to the tournament.”

The Coral U19 girls team only has one player aging-out this year and Whitney said the players are already ramping up their spirits and look-

ing forward to playing in the coming year.

“The players, both boys and girls, came to me this past week and asked if we could still continue to hold our weekly practice sessions even though our season has technically ended,” she said.

There are other events like the annual territorial tourna-

ment and the Arctic Winter Games qualifiers, which the Coral teams might attend, but they’re primarily funded by Sport Nunavut and Nunavut Soccer.

“Super Soccer is the one we raise money all year to go to,” said Whitney. “It’s definitely the biggest one of the year our players anticipate.”

Chester teacher is a keeper Northern News Services

It is always difficult to write an opinion piece on the efforts or achievements of someone you know and respect, lest one gush, but in this particular case, I’ll make an exception.

And, if gush I must, then gush I shall.

The qajaq program that Victor Sammurtok School (VSS) science teacher Glen Brocklebank developed in Chesterfield Inlet has reached impressive levels of success during the past decade, including the awarding of a $140,000 Arctic Inspiration Prize, which was officially announced this past February.

Not only does the qajaq program inspire its youthful participants and boost their self-confidence in areas they may never have thought possible, it also blends core mathematics, woodworking, physical education, healthy lifestyles and cultural inclusion.

Not bad for a project which may look to some like a bunch of kids paddling in circles and rolling upside down in one body of water or another near Chester.

The project has, in fact, attracted national attention in numerous circles, even before the awarding of the Arctic Inspiration Prize money.

A smile crossed my face as the photo landed from Chester of Brocklebank and his proud-and-eager group of students displaying their latest work, as they use a large portion of the Arctic Inspiration Prize money to rebuild the school’s fleet.

The happiness and pride evident

in the kids’ faces should warm the Canada-Wide Science Fair.

Naujaat students join the workforce Northern News Services

Twenty Grade 9 students from Tuugaalik High School spent a day learning what it’s like to perform the duties at various job positions in Naujaat earlier this month.

The hamlet, local co-op store, Parks Canada, Northern Store, RCMP, Tusarvik School, health centre, Department of Wildlife and Department of Community and Government Services all signedup to take part in Take A Student To Work Day on May 11.

The day started off slow, no bears, few tracks, travelled more than half the day, finally spotted a bear in the distance, checked out the bear only to see it was a 6-1/2 foot bear. Set up camp disappointed no bear today, I guess was in my mind. Decided to look through the binoculars a last time before going off to sleep to find a boar and a sow. Cadets go out on the land Company commander goes on final expedition with 3055 RCACC in Naujaat

A group of 20 cadets participated in the 3055 RCACC’s final expedition of the year on the land near Naujaat this past week.

The cadets participated in orienteering, skiing and a lot of sledding during their day out.

Capt. Lloyd Francis said the Hamlet of Naujaat allowed the cadets to use the elder’s cabin while they were out on the land.

He said it was nice to have a building available throughout the expedition.

“The cadets learned how to properly set up tents, and we also played some games together while we were out there,” said Francis. “Overall, it was a really fun time for everyone out on the land.”

He said the corps is supposed to conduct two or three expeditions a year, but,

unfortunately, Mother Nature played a role in preventing that this year.

He said the fall expedition was cancelled numerous times due to inclement weather.

“Canadian Ranger John Kadjuk came out with us on this trip for support, and it was nice to have him along,” he said.

“We had planned to build an iglu or two while we were out there, as well, but, unfortunately, the snow was just too soft for us to do that. This is one of the more popular activities among the kids because it’s fun to go out on the land by qamutiik, or by hiking, and they like all the activities we participate in while we’re out there.

“Overall, they just love being out on the land.”

This will be the last expedition for Francis and his beloved 3055 RCACC. He will be leaving for the south when the school year ends in about two weeks.

He said it was a lot of fun out there with the kids, especially having the elder’s cabin to warm-up in and do some extra activities.

“I did some sledding out there and got a really nice video of me sliding down a hill while holding the corps flag,” he said. “It was a lot of fun to do that, especially during my last expedition here. It was quite a contrast for some of us – nine of the kids went to Winnipeg for their Silver Star training the week before – because we went from being out on the land in Winnipeg at 20C and then out on the land in Naujaat a week later at -20C – a 40 degree swing is quite significant – and it was neat to be a part of that.”

“It was also really nice, for my final expedition here, to see the cadets running all the activities,” he said. “We, as adults, oversaw everything, but a lot of the stuff out there was led by the older cadets.”
