Strong cast leads the way in huge Arviat theatre production

Lovers of the stage were treated to quite a special performance of Inuk and the Sun by the John Arnalukjuak High School Drama Club this past week in Arviat.

The critically acclaimed and internationally successful work by Henry Beissel has been described as a masterpiece by some in the world of theatre, and the Arviat troupe met and exceeded director Gord Billard’s expectations with their performance, which he said was “fabulous.”

He originally had plans for the production but decided to forgo them in the name of simplicity, and the move was successful, he said.

“Instead of building an iglu frame, we had the image of an iglu projected onto the back screen and I used some movie magic to add special effects to the projections like a light coming on inside of an iglu and that sort of stuff,” said Billard.

“My fellow teacher, Sarah Bruckschwaiger, has extensive experience in the industry and she was invaluable for this show,” he continued. “She helped in every aspect – makeup, costumes, directing, editing, props – became my right arm in the production, and was responsible for making it run more smoothly than I ever could have on my own.”

One-hour performance Billard said the original show was going to be about 90 minutes, but he and Bruckschwaiger trimmed it down to a neat one-hour performance.

Parts of the play they found to be repetitive or redundant were removed and the result was a show that was easier to watch for their

audience.

“Cheryl Nibgoarsi played the main lead of Inuk and was her usual excellent self in the play, being in every single scene, having hundreds and hundreds of lines to remember and doing really well throughout her performance.

“Andy (Evaloakjuk) – a veteran of the stage here – also did well in his roles,” said Billard.

“After Andy dies as the father, he comes back later in the role of the muskoxen and I found his performance very strong.”

“Phillip Okatsiak and Russell Suluk in the roles of the spirits of the wind and the moon also had fairly extensive roles, and they were very strong, as well.”

The drama club did four shows in Arviat on June 5 and 6 – two school matinees and two evening shows for the public.

Billard said it was mentioned to him that Inuk and the Sun was an impressive show because every character was strong.

He said usually you can pick out one or two cast members who may be a little weaker in their acting skills, but audience members heard every word spoken by every character in Inuk and the Sun, and found the production to feature an all-around strong cast.

“We had live music for this production and our art director, Tiffany Muckpah, had the students in her class take all of the shadow puppets we made, make stencils of them, and create painted prints that we framed the stage with.”

“So, all the images of the animals and creatures from the play were on these prints created by the art classes, and John Gordon’s music class, along with musician Matthew Winnett, led an orchestra that we put backstage to handle all the special sound effects, such as dogs barking and wolves howling, and provide

“That was really cool. It was the first time we ever tried it, and it worked out really well having a kind of little orchestra pit right in the corner of the stage.

“Sarah’s (Bruckschwaiger) art class made all of the masks, which were absolutely beauti-

ful, and also worked on the costumes, so it was a real combined effort on the part of the art, drama, and music departments at our school, which was (school principal) Romeo Fournier’s aim in scheduling us all at the same time to prepare for putting on this really fabulous show.”

League to begin Rankin Inlet The team of Robert Karetak and Holly Mercer are in the process of forming a brand-new Little League program in Rankin Inlet.

The co-ed league is officially being named the 2018 Youth Fast Pitch Little League and is aimed at kids aged 11 to 13.

Equipment is being provided to the players in the league, but Karetak and Mercer are encouraging those kids who own their own baseball glove to use that glove in league play.

The duo is hoping to see teams play one or two games a week in the league, which will run for about six weeks beginning the middle of this month.

An exact date for the first game has yet to be announced.

Grad day Chesterfield Inlet Victor Sammurtok School tied its previous high of graduates when six Grade 12 students received their high school diplomas at the school on June 8 in Chesterfield Inlet.

A large number of friends and family members came out to help celebrate the achievement of the school’s Class of 2018, and a special prom ball was held in their honour.

Elder abuse awareness Rankin Inlet The Mental Health Division of Nunavut’s Department of Health will be holding an elder abuse awareness (Innavut Kangiqliniq) information session this coming Friday, June 15, at the old children’s group home (193-24 Inukshuk St.) in Rankin Inlet from 2 to 5 p.m.

Special guest speakers are expected to include an officer from the Rankin Inlet detachment of the RCMP, as well as community justice specialist Jessie Baxter.

The organizers will be sharing country food, fruit, tea, coffee and juice with those who attend the session.

Games will also be played for prizes during the gathering.

Hip-hop artist a hit in Naujaat Tuugaalik High School students enjoy blend of traditional and modern programming

Students at Tuugaalik High School in Naujaat closed out their school year by enjoying the blend of traditional-andmodern programming the school has become well-known for this past month.

Students from Grade 7 to 12 enjoyed a number of land trips throughout the month, while hip-hop artist and freestyle dancer Eugene Baffoe had them dancing throughout the halls during his fourth visit to the community from May 13 to 17.

Vice-principal Julia MacPherson said the school tries to arrange a number of land trips towards the end of May every year.

She said the students went out on the land for the day-long trips by Ski-Doo and qamutiik.

“We didn’t do any overnight trips this year mainly because of the fact we lost a lot of school days due to cancellations caused by bad weather,” said MacPherson. “But every class and their teachers got a chance to go out for a day and do a bit of fishing and caribou hunting.”

“We pride ourselves on the importance of taking these land trips, and we hold them high among the programs and projects we’re able to offer our students every year,” she continued. “We do our best to get them out on the land at least three or four times every year, whether it’s boating or out on a quad or Ski-Doo.” MacPherson said the land trips are built into the school curriculum for Grades 7 through 9.

She said a few senior-high classes can

also incorporate the trips into their own curriculum, but, either way, the trips are important to the school and its students.

“Aubrey (Bolt, the school principal) and I make sure it’s something that’s done every year because the students really enjoy it and the teachers enjoy it, too,” she said. “The land trips are a good chance for our teachers to see the students in a different light and work with them in a different environment.”

“For the most part, traditional activities – how to keep them strong and ensure they’re totally inclusive – are ongoing topics of discussion within our school administration. We do various things throughout the year – land trips, serving traditional food, having elder guests into the school, holding an elder tea, and celebrating heritage and culture days – to keep our traditional programming strong because it’s important we continue to incorporate it into student lessons and daily school life.”

Lest one think Tuugaalik High School is only about traditional programming, hip-hop artist and freestyle dancer Eugene Baffoe made his fourth trip to the Arctic Circle to instruct youth in the community on the joys of hip-hop and modern dance this past month.

Baffoe worked with the youth on May 14, 16 and 17, and participated in a land trip with Grade 7 and 8 students and their teachers on May 15.

MacPherson said Baffoe is always a hit with Naujaat youth when he visits the community.

She said this was Baffoe’s first trip to Naujaat during a time of year when Tuugaalik was conducting land trips.

“Eugene always shows an interest in the school, community and culture, and he always does things like going to the gym or hall in the evenings to play basketball with the kids,” said MacPherson.

“He really tries to incorporate himself into the community as much as possible, even though he’s only here for a short period of time as a guest. This year he was fortunate enough to get out on a land trip, and he said that he was able to check a lot of things off of his bucket list, and some things he didn’t even know were on his bucket list.”

“I find as the students get older they’re a little more hesitant to participate in dance, so it turned out to be really important for Eugene to take part in the land trip as the students really enjoyed his company because he’s such an overall positive person.”

Baffoe conducted dance sessions each morning at the elementary school, and then switched to the high school for his afternoon sessions.

MacPherson said many Naujaat students have a strong connection to hip-hop.

And, she said, there are a few students who really, really like to dance.

“He does a great job in taking parts of Inuit culture like ayaya singing or drum dancing and incorporating them into the modern style of hip-hop.”

Students meet SET challenge Teacher at Naujaat school sees program as effective promotion of science, team effort

Students at Tuugaalik High School were competing to see how far they could fly off the handle in Naujaat this past month.

The students were participating in the Science, Engineering and Technology (SET) Challenge, developed by the Kivalliq Science Educators Community (KSEC), which had them building their own catapult-like devices and seeing who could launch a projectile the farthest with it.

The SET Challenge was a unique experience for science teacher Greg Durrant, who was just concluding his first year in Naujaat and observing the Challenge for the first time.

Durrant said he was quite impressed by what he saw.

He said he didn’t really know what to expect with everything being new to him, but many of the students put a lot of thought, effort and co-operation into their SET projects.

“The Challenge seems to be very enlightening for the students and also very productive,” said Durrant. “It shows them a different side of science and the possibilities that come with it.

“It also shows them just how much fun science can be.”

Durrant said he also enjoyed participating in the school’s science fair earlier in the school year, which shares a number of similarities with the SET Challenge.

He said there was definitely a sense of competition among the various classes during the event.

“Students definitely wanted to get theirs to travel the farthest and it was a special moment when one – I believe it was made by Grade 9 students – went totally outside the lines we had made to mark distance.

“It was almost like a standing ovation when that happened.”

Durrant said he could see a budding connection between the students and science during the SET Challenge. He said the students were able to relate what they were doing into that science connection, especially math and physics.

“I say math and physics in terms of what they needed to do to ensure their project came out on top, so there was definitely some connection there.

“The event also shows the students the more collaboration you have, the more effective you can be.

“KSEC uses the Challenge to also promote teamwork, collaborative and collective effort, which is really good.

“As the students were working together you could see they were really enjoying the activities, which shows the way KSEC designed the activities to allow for a lot of group work and team effort is, for the most part, pretty effective.”

Bar can't be lowered on sexual assault Northern News Services

It wasn't easy reading this past year about the Nunavut RCMP getting blasted for its news release on what women can do to, perhaps, lessen their chance of being attacked.

It was also concerning to read about the RCMP planning to review a number of sexual assault cases from 2016 that were previously determined to be unfounded.

The Ontario Provincial Police announced a similar action.

Sexual assault and the actions that should be taken against it are two of the slipperiest slopes that have ever existed when it comes to voicing one's opinion or making a public statement.

I would like to point out I agreed with just about everything said or written by women's groups, activists against violence (which we all should be), intellects and victims alike concerning the issue.

However, the problem I had at the time was that the vast majority of everything I read on the issue was focused on the victim (usually a woman), with a smattering here or there towards the perpetrators.

Icebreaker CCGS Amundsen is studying climate change in Hudson Bay

The Canadian Coast Guard icebreaker CCGS Amundsen is on a six-week tour of Hudson Bay to study the effects of climate change in the Arctic.

On June 7, the research vessel stopped off the coast of Chesterfield Inlet and welcomed community members aboard for a tour and lunch with the captain, scientists and other crew.

A number of students from Victor Sammurtok School attended as did Chesterfield Inlet Mayor Harry Aggark.

“The visit was a lot of fun on our end and I think the community got a lot from the visit as well,” said David Barber, the expedition’s chief scientist.

The Amundsen is conducting a Hudson Bay-wide survey from May 24 to July 5.

The purpose is to understand

the impacts of climate change on the bay.

“We study everything in the physical world from the bottom of the ocean to the top of the atmosphere and everything in the biological world from viruses and bacteria to the the top of the food chain (wales, seals and bears),” stated Barber. “Things in the Arctic are changing very rapidly and these change are due to our changing climate (global warming).”

Their project is being cofunded by Manitoba Hydro, the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council and ArcticNet. Its results will be shared with the Centre for Earth Observation Science (CEOS) at the University of Manitoba, which is a large research group of over 140 people who work all over the Arctic and focus on the effects of climate change.

There are 40 scientists

The Amundsen’s focus on this expedition is sea ice, how it is changing and what effects these changes are having on marine life and the people of the North who rely on those resources.

Barber and his research team has been working with the community of Chesterfield Inlet for several years now and they select one town for a visit each time they visit the bay – this year Chesterfield was selected.

Barber and his team shared some of their results with the Chesterfield residents who came aboard for the visit.

They were taken on a twohour tour of the research vessel and heard presentations from both the Coast Guard crew and by the scientific staff.

There was also some discussion about how Northern youth might pursue a career in science or the Coast Guard.

The final leg of the school year has been diverse and wonderfully eclectic at Tuugaalik High School in Naujaat during the past six weeks.

Students have enjoyed traditional trips out on the land, getting the latest dance

moves down with hip-hop artist Eugene (GeNie) Baffoe, being reintroduced to the fun of science by participating in the Science, Engineering and Technology (SET) Challenge, and finishing their projects in shop class to wind down their school year.

Arviat hockey guru receives award for 15 years of love and devotion to his sport

For the past 15 years, Gleason Uppahuak has spent countless hours organizing and overseeing hockey programs in Arviat – and he wasn’t doing it for accolades.

Uppahuak was doing it for his love of the game. A game that’s been with him his entire life.

And, when he got word he was receiving a Commissioner’s Award for all those years of dedication to the game he loves so much – and those who play it – his heart swelled with pride.

Uppahuak, 33, said he was humbled to receive the Commissioner’s Award, but he can’t deny how good it felt to have his efforts recognized at such a level.

He said as the time to walk up and accept the award from Nunavut Commissioner Nellie Kusugak drew near, all he could think about was the people he spent so much time with at the arena over the years; as their faces passed in front of his mind’s eye and their contributions to Kivalliq hockey once again warmed his heart.

“All I could think about was that I had to thank all my helpers, especially my wife (Frances) who’s been there with me since day one,” said

Uppahuak. “They all played such an important role in me getting this award – my fellow coaches with the Arviat Wolves, the minor hockey group in Arviat, David Clark with the Junior Canucks program, and my colleagues with Hockey Nunavut, especially Darrin Nichol and Mike MacPherson, who taught me a lot and were on my side since I first got involved with minor hockey in Arviat.”

“And last, but not least, Jim Ramsay and Ryan St. John – all the sponsors who have been kind enough to sponsor the hockey events I’ve been involved in during the past 15 years,” he continued. “I have to mention Calm Air. When you look at how many Kivalliq sports tournaments have Calm Air on their championship, you have to appreciate what the airline does for sports in the region.”

Uppahuak said none of the people who work so hard and volunteer so much of their time to sports do it to win awards.

But at the same time, he said, it feels good to have your efforts recognized.

The biggest thing for Uppahuak, he said, with the teams, programs and tournaments he’s been involved with, was growing each one and making them better every year.

“When you look at the structure of hockey, from local minor hockey, to regional programs, and then to Hockey Nunavut (Zone) and the Branch (Hockey North), it takes a lot of time, but it’s worth it because it works and, these days, you have to do things by the rules,” he said. “I don’t mind saying David (Clark) and I are heavily involved with Kivalliq hockey, and you have to spend many hours at it if you want your program, team or tournament to be the best it can be.”

Uppahuak said he can’t pick one event he’s been involved with and say it’s his favourite, not even the Jon Lindell Memorial (Calm Air Cup).

He looks at all of them fondly and equally, he said.

“I just love hockey so much that every event is the same to me,” he said. “All the kids I coached since they were five or six years old – then they get selected to the Arctic Winter Games or the National Aboriginal Championship – they say my name when asked who was their coach growing up, and that touches my heart very deeply.”

“Accepting this award was one of the proudest moments of my life,” he continued. “And, the award has given me even more motivation to make the hockey I’m involved with even better.”
