Feds fund tourism in the Kivalliq Chester, Rankin and Whale Co-ops upgrading facilities

The federal government announced $786,000 in funding to aid four Kivalliq projects in Chesterfield Inlet, Rankin Inlet and Whale Cove on Nov. 15.

The announcement was made in Rankin Inlet by federal Tourism Minister Melanie Joly on behalf of federal Minister responsible for CanNor (Canadian Northern Economic Development Agency) Navdeep Bains.

The CanNor funding means that Turaarvik Co-op Hotel North in Rankin Inlet, Pitsiulak Co-op and hotel in Chesterfield Inlet and the Issatik Co-op hotel in Whale Cove will each receive $250,000 to significantly expand and modernize their facilities.

The improvements will include expanding the number of rooms, adding new furnishings, improving facilities maintenance and service areas and upgrading lighting to highefficiency systems that will reduce demand on each community’s power supply.

The remaining $36,440 in CanNor funding will go to the revitalization of Thule Qammaqs (sod houses) archaeological sites near Chesterfield Inlet, with the funding earmarked for archaeological mapping and cultural development.

Joly said the four different pro-

jects receiving CanNor funding are all linked to the tourism sector.

“All together, these four projects will actually create 100 jobs in the region,” said Joly. “One in 10 jobs in the country is linked to the tourism sector, so ultimately we want to tell the people from Rankin Inlet to Chesterfield Inlet that they can be confident in their future and they can be extremely proud of what they do.”

Arctic Co-operatives are investing $884,800 in the Rankin hotel upgrade, $1,405,000 in Chester and $2,020,000 in Whale Cove. The Hamlet of Chesterfield Inlet is contributing $9,110 to the Thule Qammaqs project.

A hidden gem During her funding presentation, Joly referred to Rankin Inlet as a hidden gem in Canada.

She said the tourism industry is growing at an annual rate of four per cent, making it one of the fastest growing industries in the world.

“We need a national strategy for tourism,” said Joly.

“That’s why the prime minister asked me to develop that strategy, and that’s why I launched a listening tour – to go all across the country to listen to different communities and hear their perspective on how we can build this important strategy together.

also booming all across the country ... because people want to know how communities live and what they have to offer, and they want to get to know their culture and their history.

“It’s part of our reconciliation work but it’s also the fact that people want to experience different realities and Rankin has a lot of potential because of the boost in tourism and its key and strategic positioning on Canada’s map and within Canada’s tourism sector.”

Joly said the government also wants to make sure elders and youth are involved with the development of the Thule Qammaqs project in Chester.

Renovating the Turaarvik hotel Kissarvik Co-op board director Steve Fredlund of Rankin Inlet said the Rankin Co-op has more than 1,100 active members and that membership continues to grow.

He said the Co-op and its members

are very grateful for the $250,000 in CanNor funding received in Rankin.

“I haven’t talked to Whale Cove or Chesterfield Inlet, but I’m sure if they had the opportunity to be here they’d have asked me to express their gratitude also and thank you for that,” said Fredlund.

“The project being financed here is a complete renovation of the Turaarvik hotel, which includes 21 guest rooms, a conference room, the kitchen, the dining room, and the addition of a walk-in freezer/cooler, as well as some repairs to the roof of one wing connecting to the retail store.

“So it’s money well spent.

“All this means all this stuff can be done sooner, and we’re already seeing the benefits of those renovations in better guest comfort, so that’s really boosting us forward, which is actually a real benefit to Rankin Inlet.”

Fredlund said the impact of the support has been to move up the completion date to 2018.

The Turaarvik hotel was opened in November of 2004 and this is the first major upgrade to the hotel since that time, he said.

“The directors are all proud to be providing employment in Rankin Inlet to between 70 to 80 people on a regular basis.

“So, we’re thankful for the support given to us through this funding to continue with our efforts to benefit the community of Rankin Inlet.”

Rankin Inlet hamlet council held a special meeting to discuss plans for a new community complex on Nov. 15.

Hamlet senior administrative officer (SAO) Justin Merritt said a lack of infrastructure is Rankin’s most critical challenge right now.

He said the biggest needs are a new hamlet office and

a new community complex centre.

“We need to expand our recreation hall and, at one point, there was talk about a hamlet office within the complex, but we want a stand-

alone office as a separate item,” said Merritt.

“We’ve identified that to the premier and ministers and we’ve selected possible sites for the hamlet office already.

“The complex is going to be a four-year project and among the ideas council is discussing are getting a hall twice the size of our current one and adding a number of other facilities for the community.

“We’ve talked to the community on Facebook but we haven’t conducted an official survey or anything like that just yet.”

Among the recommendations to be included in a new Rankin complex are a kitchen area that can be used by different groups in the community, while an indoor playground for the winter months tops the list of many parents.

Merritt said a weight-andfitness room and a multi-use room for things like yoga classes and aerobics are also being considered.

The SAO said hamlet council plans to consult more with the community to see what other services people might want to be included in the new complex.

“Basically, it comes down to an amount of space using the old arena as a platform for the size of the new building and putting four or five other things along with the rec hall in there.

“Council would really like to see housing set up for young people who are just starting out and can’t afford to rent an apartment or buy their own home right away.

“The hamlet hopes the government will build some form of apartment complex along the lines of what the Qikiqtani Inuit Association is trying to do for beneficiaries in Iqaluit.”

Merritt said also an elders’ centre is high on the hamlet’s list of priorities for the community.

He said the Government of Nunavut is looking at putting new facilities in the territory’s three regions and hamlet council sent a letter to the premier stating if there’s going to be a new facility put in the Kivalliq, then Rankin Inlet is the place to put it.

“We’ve listed a number of reasons why a regional elders’ facility should be in Rankin, including running water (utilidor), having a health centre with doctors here already, land we can set aside for them and 24-hour ambulance service.”

Merritt said if he could have one project done tomorrow, it would be a new hamlet office.

He said hamlet staff simply need to get out of the current building.

“The current hamlet office was originally built in 1969, with the extension being added in 1992 or 1993. The area where you first walk into the hamlet office used to be our fire hall at one time.

“We need more space.

That’s all there is to it.”

Wayne Babych is scheduled to bring his hockey school to Naujaat this coming week along with his brother David.

Hockey gear and NHLers Naujaat It’s an exciting month for young hockey players in Naujaat.

Calm Air is scheduled to be in Naujaat this week to size every kid in the community for their own set of hockey equipment.

The event is being held as a fundraiser for the Rankin men’s futsal team travelling to a tournament in Saskatoon, Sask.

New restaurant is hiring Rankin Inlet Big Racks Barbecue is interviewing applicants for a number of positions at its new Rankin Inlet restaurant, including cashiers/waitresses, line cooks and delivery drivers.

The eatery hopes to be open for business in Rankin this week.

Housing election Baker Lake The Baker Lake Housing Association will be having an election for five board members on Dec. 13.

The new board members will be appointed by Nunavut’s housing minister following the local election.

Awards night set Kivalliq/Nunavut The seventh annual Arctic Inspiration Prize award ceremony will be held Feb. 12, 2019, at the Yukon Arts Centre in Whitehorse, Yukon.

The event will be held in conjunction with the Arctic Indigenous Investment Conference.

The awards ceremony will honour the 2018 laureates of the $3 million Arctic Inspiration Prize that encourages, enables and celebrates the inspiring achievements of Northerners.

It will also feature the first ever pan-Northern performance of Juno award winners Elisapie and Leela Gilday, along with Yukon’s Diyet & The Love Soldiers.

CAT bulldozer crashes through ice in Rankin 'At least it’s out and everyone’s fine'

A hamlet CAT D6T bulldozer was successfully pulled from the water after it crashed through the ice on Williamson Lake on Nov. 15.

The lower half of the bulldozer was submerged in the lake for about five-anda-half hours before being pulled out.

Hamlet senior administrative officer Justin Merritt said he was in a meeting when hamlet employee Troy Aksalnik informed him of the accident at about 9:30 a.m.

He said the airport was borrowing the bulldozer from the hamlet when the accident occurred.

“For some reason the driver ... decided to go along Williamson Lake with the bulldozer and I have no idea why,” said Merritt.

Nobody was hurt and workers were able to get it out of the lake with the help of several other companies in town such as Inukshuk Construction and M&T. “You have to be very careful pulling something like that out. You can’t just hook up a chain and wire. You have to have something to put tension on slowly because if one of those things ever snapped back it would tear somebody right apart.”

Merritt said he trusted his men to get the bulldozer out successfully.

“I got the operator’s report right away and then went to the RCMP and our insurance company with pictures.

“So now we’ll wait for the assessment and see what we’re looking at.”

Andrew Quackenbush, the hamlet’s mechanic, could not be consulted as his wife had just given birth so Merritt had the bulldozer placed in a heated garage to let it thaw. “(Quackenbush) will look at it when

he gets back, but he feels it will be salvageable and the engine should be OK because it’s fresh water in Williamson Lake, not salt water.

Five contest winners spend special day with firefighters

Five students had their drawings selected during Fire Prevention Week to enjoy being fire chief for a day in Rankin Inlet on Nov. 15.

It was the second year the Rankin Inlet department held the contest for students from kindergarten to Grade 4 at Leo Ussak Elementary School (LUS).

Fire Chief Mark Wyatt said almost 100 per cent of the kids the firefighters go to see at LUS enter the contest.

He said it makes it hard to select the winning entry with more than 300 kids participating.

“We go through a lot of drawings, and part of the judging is not just the quality of the picture,

but also some of the things they learned when we go to talk to them during Fire Prevention Week being reflected in their drawings,” said Wyatt.

“It worked out really well and the pictures have all been pretty good.”

Wyatt said the contest has become a special event to the kids who win.

He said there can only be five winners, and it’s difficult knowing how the kids feel who really wanted to win and didn’t. Unfortunately, he can’t bring more than 300 kids over to the fire hall for lunch.

“When the winning kids are selected, we pick them up in the fire truck.

“The parents are told in advance, but the kids are not, so they’re usually pretty surprised and

having a good time and eating stoked when a fire truck just pulls pizza, cupcakes, hot chocolate up in front and turns on the lights and chips. and sirens.

Bad news lurks in rosy forecast Northern News Services

Now don’t get me wrong, we have success stories and each of those people should be darn proud of their accomplishments.

The problem is, we just don’t have enough of them and it’s time we all have a better understanding of just why.

On the surface, the prediction for growth in Nunavut up until at least 2025, as laid out in an economic analysis recently released by the Economic Board of Canada, is pretty rosy news.

The reason behind the upswing is, of course, mining, and the board’s analysis states that gold production in Nunavut will double during the next few years with Agnico Eagle Mines Sanikiluaq properties at Meliadine and Amaruq, and Sabina Gold and Silver’s Back River project leading the way.

The Economic Board of Canada’s economic forecast sees 1,300 new jobs being created in Nunavut by mining, and 3,750 being created overall by 2025.

Those are numbers to get a little excited about in our territory.
