Player development Rankin Inlet Minor hockey players registered with the Rankin Inlet Minor Hockey Association were fortunate enough to participate in their second high-quality player-development camp of the 2018-19 hockey season when the instructors for the Winnipeg-based The Rink Player Development brought their skill-development expertise to the community this past weekend.

The Rink features three high-level development directors in director of player development John Cara, director of female player development Addie Miles-Abbott and Mike Hellyer, director of TESTify Performance.

Hannah Siksik of the Rankin Inlet detachment of the RCMP took the lead in organizing the camp for the young players in Rankin.

Logo contest Kivalliq The Kivalliq Inuit Association (KIA) is holding a logodesign contest open to all Inuit beneficiaries under the Nunavut Land Claims Agreement.

The winning entry will be the official logo of the Kivalliq Community Culture Initiatives Program Funding and its designer will win a brand-new iPad. The contest theme is Inuit Cultural and Traditional. The deadline for contest submissions is Dec. 14.

Submissions must include an official entry form from the contest entrant's local CLO, or they can request one from the Social Development Program at KIA.

Grad fundraisers Rankin Inlet A 2019 grad craft sale will be held at Maani Ulujuk Ilinniarvik this coming Saturday, Dec. 8, from 1 to 4 p.m.

The students are fundraising for their grad and, although the event was announced on short notice, they will have 40 tables available at $20 per table for the combined craft-andbake sale.

There will also be canteen services available. The students will be selling taco-in-a-bag, pop, chips, kukuk, coffee and tea.

The Rankin grads will also be hosting an '80s teen dance on Dec. 15 at the community hall from 9 p.m. until 1 a.m.

The cost to attend the dance is $5 for those dressed in '80s style and $10 for those who are not.

The dance is restricted to those aged 16 years and older and there will be prizes awarded to those who are the best dressed in the styles of the decade.

Breakfast with Santa Baker Lake The Baker Lake Youth Athletic Association (BLYAA) will be holding Breakfast with Santa at Jonah Amitnaaq Secondary School on Dec. 8 from 11 a.m. until 1:30 p.m.

A child's plate (two sausages, scrambled eggs and one pancake) is priced at $6 for the event, while an adult plate (three sausages, scrambled eggs and three pancakes) will be available for $12. Proceeds from Breakfast with Santa will go the BLYAA.

Science projects Rankin Inlet Folks in Rankin Inlet are reminded that they may dropin to the gymnasium at Maani Ulujuk Ilinniarvik (MUI) to view the projects entered into this year's MUI Science Fair on Dec. 6 from 6:30 to 7:15 p.m.

The students who have the top projects at this year's MUI Science Fair will advance to the regional Kivalliq Science Fair in the new year for a chance to compete at the national Canada-wide Science Fair in Fredericton, N.B., from May 11 to 18, 2019.

Cooking made special Teacher makes foods class a unique experience for Baker students

A senior-high foods class has students honing their culinary skills and learning to appreciate sharing the fruits of one's labour with others at Jonah Amitnaaq Secondary School in Baker Lake.

The class ended up in the teaching hands of Craig Vincent, who takes an educator's pride in watching students exceed expectations.

And the path Vincent took to the class was almost as challenging as baking the perfect pie crust.

Vincent said he had an assignment change two years ago that led to him taking on the senior high foods program, which he teaches again this year along with Grade 10 and Grade 11 art and computers.

He said his first degree was in fine arts and his second in education, before he decided to head back to school at the age of 33 to tackle programmer/analyst with a specialty in networking.

"I moved here in 2003 in anticipation of the new school, which opened the following year," said Vincent.

"I built its network and was network administrator, IT computer teacher and art teacher for 13 years until the Government of Nunavut came in with its CBN network system.

"I still manage and maintain CSN on the student's side.

"They call me a man for all seasons. A true renaissance man."

Vincent said students in the foods class are having fun and cooking up a storm.

He said a number of efficient routines were established early in the class and everything runs like clockwork.

"The students have a positive class and we share quite a bit of the food.

"We'll cook bacon and give it away

to anyone in the school who might be hungry."

Students in the class are divided almost equally between male and female and everyone works together to succeed.

Vincent took student Seth Perkison to the 2017-2018 Skills Nunavut competition and he came away with a bronze medal in the cooking category.

He said even more impressive was the fact Perkison went into the competition at the last minute with very little preparation.

"There's a guy who did high school foods, got involved and turned out to be pretty darn good at it," said Vincent.

"I used to do Skills Nunavut years ago and was actually on its board for five years.

"I was more into information technology (IT) at the time and brought Bobby Tagoona – who did web-page design and graphic design – to three Skills Canada national competitions.

"They invited him back as a delegate and he actually met with the big wigs to discuss how to improve the Skills Canada program."

Vincent, who also majored in photography, said he blanketed two whiteboards in the school kitchen with pictures of dishes the students prepare.

He said the boards are covered in pictures and are often great for starting a conversation.

"It's by no means everything, but it's a good selection of what we do and the kids often look at it and ask to do a certain dish again.

"It's almost become a word wall – one of the techniques they use in English for the levels of literacy.

"We do everything from white rolls to ginger chicken and vegetable stir fries and most things in-between."

Vincent pushes altruism a lot in the kitchen, so students often work quite hard

on something only to give it all away.

He said students don't get to eat all of what they make, nor do they get to take it home.

"But I'll have something like Muffin Monday, on which they get to take home everything they make," said Vincent.

"On Fridays we'll bake 300 cookies and give them out to students in junior high and they're gone within minutes.

"The dynamics of the groups have changed in a totally positive way during the past two years. The kids work well together and leave that place spotless at the end of a 90-minute class.

"I kind of wish people could be a fly on the wall and see what happens every day – students in a new context, out from the desk with no books in their hands and in an environment where they're learning and doing heuristically through role modelling and working together seriously for a common purpose but, at the same time, having fun, laughing and carrying on."

Vincent said it's okay that some students aren't into altruism, but the majority of them are.

He said some kids have even taken to calling him Chef Craig because he presents himself in a white coat and chef's hat for class.

"I love it when someone comes to class, tells me they made this or that on the weekend and the kids ate it all.

"Staff members and other people have sampled what we were giving away and then asked me for the recipe, so it's not only kids who love a lot of what we make.

"The big thing for me is giving it all away, watching people eat, having people ask for a recipe and the politeness of it all.

The annual science cultural camp organized and run by the Kivalliq Science Educators' Community (KSEC) received a much-needed financial boost this past week.

The camp was approved for a federal grant from Natural Resources Canada of $74,500 and KSEC president Glen Brocklebank of Chesterfield Inlet said the money is badly needed to upgrade camp supplies and equipment.

The annual KSEC Science Cultural Camp sees about 45 people participate every year, of which 32 are students from across the region.

Brocklebank said the federal government is trying to increase Inuit participation in the science sector.

He said a researcher actually found KSEC and made contact to inform the group there was funding up to $75,000 available.

"She told us the grant could be used for programming or for running programs in the North, so we applied under our science cultural camp and were successful," said Brocklebank.

"Part of it was to update and get new equipment such as tents, stoves and lanterns

to be able to revamp our program and bring it into the next decade.

"Some of our tents predate Agnico Eagle back to the days of Cumberland Resources and their logo is on our tents.

"So our tents are close to being 20 years old and they're showing their age, so we're going to make a major investment into our equipment so we can continue to operate our science cultural camps."

Brocklebank said KSEC applied for the grant this past year and a test deposit was only made about two weeks ago.

He said it may have taken a little while to get everything sorted out, but KSEC is happy that it is and excited about upgrading the infrastructure necessary to run the camp.

"This grant is definitely going to be enough to pretty much totally upgrade all the gear and equipment necessary to run the camp.

"In addition to tents, stoves and lanterns, we'll be purchasing everything else the camp needs for food preparation such as frying pans, spatulas, etc.

"It will also cover backpacks and some of the other things that we give the kids who participate in the camp.

"So this federal funding

grant from Natural Resources Canada will be plenty to get us back operating for what we hope will be a good number of years moving forward and that's totally exciting."

Brocklebank said in the beginning, when KSEC first started offering the science cultural camps, he remembers the educators using infrastructure from Jonah Amitnaaq Secondary School in Baker Lake.

He said it wasn't long before the educators realized it wasn't fair to the schools for KSEC to rely on them for the equipment.

"We're a big group, so we had to make an initial investment with help from our funding partners at the time.

"So this is pretty exciting for us to receive funding that will give us the chance to bring the science cultural camp into the next decade, for sure.

"We're going to be holding the next camp in Baker Lake and we're hoping our emergency plans and our wildlife plans will be approved.

"This year was a tough one with the two events that happened in the region, but we're hoping to move back to Baker with the support of the high school and the community of Baker Lake."

It certainly was good news to learn of the federal grant secured by the Kivalliq Science Educators' Community (KSEC) to refresh its cache of camping supplies for one of KSEC's top annual programs.

The KSEC Science Cultural Camp did not escape the impact of the two horrific fatal bear attacks in our region earlier this year and it still remains to be seen if the organizers will be able to use the same model going forward of having the students based out on the land for the camp.

Hopefully, our regional and territorial governmental resources will work with KSEC and the schools to ensure the annual camp can be held Sanikiluaq out on the land with no threat of danger to the students or the staff members accompanying them.

The annual KSEC Science Cultural Camp is yet another example of how the region's youth flourish when presented with opportunity to excel in their own environment.

Whether it's hockey instruction in Rankin Inlet, a qajaqing program in Chesterfield Inlet, the region's travelling science and cultural camp, a cooking class in Baker Lake, or the Kivalliq Inuit Association's annual art camp – the proof is in the pud-

Whale Cove defeats Rankin Fusion V-Team to claim volleyball crown

'Nobody ever cheers for you when you play for Iqaluit'

A Hollywood writer couldn't produce a better story about a journey to a volleyball championship than the true tale of Victoria Kakuktinniq and her Whale Cove teammates this past month in Rankin Inlet.

Kakuktinniq, originally from Rankin, was back in her hometown teaching a sewing program and waiting for her Iqaluit teammates to arrive for the annual Laura Gauthier Memorial (LGM) volleyball tournament.

She was deeply disappointed when the plane carrying her teammates had to fly-over Rankin on Friday, Nov. 23.

Kakuktinniq had played for Rankin Fusion in the tournament a number of times, as well as for a couple of other teams, but she had pretty much resigned herself to the fact she wouldn't be playing in this year's LGM. Then, the players from the small little community of Whale Cove – who have only been in the LGM the past couple of years – asked if she'd like to suit-up with them.

And that's where the true fairy tale begins.

Game after game rolled past and Whale Cove just kept on winning until they found themselves getting ready for one of the tourna-

ment's semifinals.

Three sets later irony had played its role and they were past Kakuktinniq's former team (Fusion) and staring at the defending champion Rankin V-Team in the final.

Kakuktinniq said she started believing Whale Cove could win the LGM when they first ran into Fusion in the round robin.

She said when Whale got up a couple of points on Fusion, she and her teammates started realizing they could hang-in with the best teams and might actually go all the way.

"We started the tournament just playing and having a little fun together but, from that point on, we really put our heads into it and had the confidence to really start thinking we could win it," said Kakuktinniq.

"It was getting really exciting as we kept moving and when we did get to the final, we couldn't believe we made it.

"We worked so hard to get to that point.

"There was just one more game to go, so we just went out there, gave it our all and we got the win."

Kakuktinniq said when the final began on Sunday, Nov. 25, the crowd in the Maani Uluyuk Ilinniarvik (MUI) gym was going crazy.

She said by that time, the Rankin fans were actually chanting for Whale Cove.

"The whole crowd – it seemed like everybody – was actually cheering for us.

"It was so nice to play on a team that was being cheered for because nobody ever cheers for you when you play for Iqaluit.

"I was so happy when the crowd was chanting, ‘Let's go Whale Cove, let's go.'"

Back and forth the final sets went, with one team rarely ahead of the other by more than two or three points.

A fortunate bounce here or there and either team could

have claimed the title.

When the final point was won, the crowd in the MUI gym exploded with happiness when Whale Cove took the female LGM championship.

Kakuktinniq said the final was crazy intense and exciting.

She said it's hard to describe the feeling amongst the Whale players when they took that final point.

"Oh my God, everyone was just so pumped up and we were all so excited and so happy that this small little town of Whale Cove – that just started playing

in the LGM about two years ago – won the LGM tournament."

Given a few days to let it all sink in, Kakuktinniq looked back on the LGM and, surprisingly, described it as a bittersweet experience.

She said she couldn't be 100 per cent happy because she didn't go to the LGM to play for Whale Cove.

"Of course I was upset when my team flew over. It's a team I play and practice with all year and we were really looking forward to going to

Rankin Inlet – we fundraised and everything to go – so it was very disappointing when they flew over.

"But the Whale Cove girls I played with were totally amazing and had a positive attitude the whole way through.

"They were just so exciting to be with – really kind girls who were more than happy to have me on their team, so I felt more than welcome playing with them.

"I was so excited to be able to be a part of their experience."
