Bantam time Rankin Inlet/Arviat The Arviat Wolves will be returning to defend their championship title when the Bantam Rock hockey championship gets underway in Rankin Inlet from March 1 to 3.

The Rankin tournament will be an excellent warmup for the Nunavut Bantam Territorial Championship, which will be held in Arviat from March 15 to 17.

Film screening Arviat Arvist is the next stop on the first leg of the 2019 Northern screening tour of the feature presentation, The Grizzlies.

The screening of the film, based on a true story, in Arviat is free of charge and gets underway at 7:30 p.m. tonight, Feb. 20, at the Mark Kalluak Community Hall.

The special hosts for the evening, Ian G. Speirs and Vinnie Karetak, will hold a question-and-answer session with the audience immediately following the screening.

The feature presentation was screened in Rankin Inlet the previous evening.

The Grizzlies will open in theatres nationwide on April 19.

Thrift Shop holds AGM Baker Lake The Abluqta Society will be holding its annual general meeting on Tuesday, March 5, at the Abluqta Thrift Shop beginning at 7 p.m.

The thrift shop is at QDC 14, a green house next to the Agnico Eagle guest house.

Refreshments will be served during the meeting.

One of the top priorities for the Abluqta Society is to open a regular food bank and it is calling for a large turnout from the community for the annual general meeting.

A new board will also be elected and voting will take place for the positions of president, vice-president, treasurer/ financial manager, volunteer co-ordinator and secretary.

I have two distinct and crystalclear sets of images locked in my head from my days as a Grade 1 student at Central School in Glace Bay, N.S., and I'm sure they'll remain with me until my final breath.

The first is of the summer of 1964. I had strayed a little outside of my comfort zone and found myself walking down Brookside Street, dangerously close to Number 11, which I seem to remember being somewhere near Mars at the time.

I was fighting back the urge to scream for Mom and take flight as fast as the two wooden matchsticks that passed for my legs would take me.

The founder and head coach of the Aqsarniit Ujauttaq (Northern Lights) gymnastics club in Rankin Inlet, Lisa Kresky, left for the Canada

Winter Games this past week with a lot on her mind.

Kresky is attending the games as part of the Women in Coaching program and is linked with the B.C. gymnastics team as an apprentice coach.

Following the Games, Kresky will turn all her attention on getting her competitive team from the Rankin club to represent Canada at the 2019 international World Gymnaestrada in Dornbirn, Austria, from July 7 to 13.

More than 70 countries are expected to take part in the World Gymnaestrada, with more than 20,000 participants.

Rankin's 22 gymnasts and three coaches would be part of the 600-member Team Canada entourage at the event.

Kresky said her young gymnasts were beyond excited when they received their Team Canada uniforms this past month.

She said the Rankin athletes have been counting down the days to the World Gym-

naestrada since well before this past Christmas.

“The uniforms kind of made everything feel a bit more realistic and reminded the girls that time is ticking,” said Kresky.

“We're looking at it being just over 130 days away now, so the girls are getting even more excited, if that's even possible.”

For all the excitement mounting – and 22 talented young gymnasts from Rankin Inlet having their hearts set on being part of Team Canada at World Gymnaestrada – one big hurdle remains and, as almost always in the North.

That one big hurdle is money.

The gymnastics club's competitive team has attended a number of premier events during the past two years to earn the right to travel to Austria and represent Canada.

Those events cost a lot to attend, as well, and as hard as the athletes and coaches have worked fundraising, they're still $60,000 away from their final goal and the clock is, indeed, ticking.

Kresky said she, the girls, and their parents remain hopeful and optimistic that they'll get past their final barrier.

They all continue to work hard at fundraising.

She said there's still a ways to go and nobody is even thinking about giving up.

“We have to stay confident and optimistic that we'll raise the rest of the money.

“We're going to find a way to raise that total remaining, so we're working hard and keeping our eyes on the final goal.

“We had another bake sale this past weekend, we have raffles coming up, and we continue to put letters out to businesses and organizations trying to attract sponsorships and that type of thing.

“It's really tough fundraising in Rankin Inlet right now with so many other teams and organizations also trying to fundraise – with everyone trying to do so much fundraising it's really tapping out the resources within the community, but we just refuse to give up and I still believe we'll get there.”

Completion of project scratches one item from group's bucket list

It was a quiet moment of triumph, a task finally completed, and one item scratched off the bucket list for five men who built their own iglu near Arviat this past week.

Four of the five Inuit – Jimmy Ishalook, Andrew Kuksuk, Jackson Kablutsiak and Nap Karetak – had first determined to build the iglu about two years ago and the fifth, Robert Karetak, answered the door when opportunity knocked to claim his share of the iglu-building glory.

Robert said the original group of four got into making traditional tools in a shack about two years ago.

He said they tackled a fairly wide variety of items, including stuff for their moms, sisters and aunts as the need arose.

“There were other times when they made ulus, different things for sewing and a pana (snow knife),” said Robert.

“It was just a bunch of projects they wanted to do and, when they made their first panas, they said they wanted to build an iglu.

“A couple of years passed and no iglu, so a night this past week they determined they were going to build one then, so they finally went and built the iglu using the panas they had made.”

Robert chuckled lightheartedly as he said it was more than likely his group of friends just finally decided to cross the iglu off their bucket list and be able to say they made one.

He said throughout the process, however, there was

an element of getting a little closer to their culture at play.

“Building the tools yourself, and then going out to build an iglu using the tools you made is a process in itself.

“It's kind of a test, too, to see if you can make one that's not in a survival situation kind of thing.

“It was just something they talked about for a few years, saying they were going to make one, and they finally went out and did it.”

Robert said for most, if not all, the group members, this was the first iglu they had a hand in making, including himself.

He said two of them got a start on the iglu in the afternoon and the rest of the group came after supper, when they had finished work for the day,

to help complete it.

“Some were cutting the blocks, some were transferring the blocks and at least two were inside piecing the iglu together.

“To be honest, once we were finished, everyone was pretty shocked that we were actually able to build one.

“There were some difficulties, but we'd change the blocks and start on a new one if one of the blocks broke.

“We just continued fitting and piecing the blocks until it was all complete, and, once it was done, it was pretty amazing to see, and we were all sitting in there pretty amazed that we actually built one.”

Robert said all together, counting the afternoon and evening work, it took the group roughly six hours to complete

He said someone told the story of a person who was really fast at building anSambaa igluK’e and you had to admire skill like that.

“They were out on the land when one person was asked to take the dogs off of the sled and leash them.

“By the time he was done tying-up the dogs, he turned around and an iglu was done, so some people can be really, really fast at making one.

“But it was just more for the experience for us and to see how it would turn out.

“We weren't looking for any kind of recognition or anything like that, but it is a fair size and some people have been going to look at it, so, hopefully, our triumph stays up for a long time.”

Plate time Rankin Inlet Nine teams battled for the Polar Bear Plate juvenile/junior championship in Rankin Inlet this past weekend, Feb. 14-17.

Doing battle in the A Division were Iqaluit, Naujaat, Rankin Falcons, Whale Cove and a combined Chesterfield Inlet/ Rankin Inlet squad.

Making up the B Division were the Rankin Rock, Arviat, Coral Harbour and Baker Lake.

Existing structure must carry load as heart of community when new arena opens

A lot has been said, written and talked about from the arena perspective as the grand old lady on the hill lumbers through her final season before passing the puck off to the brand new arena for the 2019-2020 season in Rankin Inlet.

Combined with the attached community hall, tiny curling rink, and local radio station nestled upstairs, the grand old lady has given a lot more to the community of Rankin than great hockey games – and it promises to still deliver more.

Mike Shouldice has seen many a Kivalliq winter in Arviat and Rankin Inlet.

Shouldice said if you stand back and look at all that goes on in Rankin, it wouldn't be hard to name the heart of the community.

He said other venues play vital roles – grocery stores, fitness centre and school gyms to name but a few – but, somewhat easily, people would name the community hallarena complex as the heart and soul of the community.

“I would say about 90 per cent of what we do socially from weddings to fundraising, concerts, curling and hockey

tournaments – all of the social and recreational activities, the life of the community, happens in that building,” said Shouldice.

“We have a lot of volunteers in this community and, if we didn't have these people, we'd have no fire department, ambulance service, or organized gymnastic, soccer or hockey programs.

“If it wasn't for people volunteering their time we wouldn't have any of those things, so thank goodness they do.

“And much of the related activities revolves around that complex. ” Shouldice said the second truly significant activity at the complex is fundraising.

He said the hamlet gives the rec department its annual budget, which is enough to pay salaries, cover the heating costs and hold some activities, but fundraising is behind the majority of special initiatives in the community.

“More than a half a million bucks is raised through fundraising in Rankin Inlet every year so people have great activities in the community and can represent Rankin at major events, basically all over Canada now.

“It's a significant enterprise now, and we see partnerships

with the fire department, for example, that's brought training, equipment and numerous other things to the community.

“Significantly, most of our recreational and social life pivots around that building.

“When you look at our community, especially during the long winter months, without that building where would people go for recreation, socializing and exercise – my goodness, I wouldn't want to contemplate life in the community without that building.”

Shouldice said the most critical issue hamlet council has to deal with in the immediate future is what to do with the complex when the new arena opens, how to fix it up, grow its programming and decide what to offer in it to meet the needs of the community.

“We've had ideas ranging from soup kitchens to a full gym or a children's indoor playground,” said Shouldice.

“There's so many good ideas going around, and we're trying to be as organized about it as possible, but that facility is absolutely critical to the community all year round, but mostly through the fall and winter months.

“And the social-interactive aspect – catching up on the news with neighbours, kids

“It's not just about the hockey rink, which is packed for each of our many tournaments, it's about the whole social context of the community.”

David Clark has been Rankin's recreation director for more than a decade and is responsible for booking events at the complex, overseeing its operations, and getting the best out of a facility that's no longer nearly large enough to meet the community's needs.

Clark said it can become challenging to accommodate everyone when groups and organizations all want to hold their fundraiser at the complex

while a major event is taking place.

He said large events draw big crowds and they're a big help to the community's fundraising efforts, but other things matter a great deal too, like the 100 kids he gets at the complex almost every single day learning how to skate, going to public skating, exercising, and simply hanging out and having fun with their friends.

“The community groups and my staff and I do our best to make everybody happy and try to make everything work, but you can only do your best with what you have,” said Clark.

“It's critical that we have a strong operational plan in place for the old building once the new arena opens.”

Clark said the hamlet is in the process of applying for

funding to renovate the community hall side of the complex.

He said renovation and expansion are critical for the complex moving forward.

“We're trying to obtain the funding necessary to expand our existing community hall and give it a good facelift.

“Programming that will be offered and that type of thing is being handled by council in strong consultation with the community.

“But, right now, funding for renovation and expansion is the biggest concern because there's no new complex coming to Rankin anytime soon.

“So, when the new arena opens, we have to be able to meet the community's needs with the existing structure and we just couldn't do it in its current size and condition.”
