Agnico Eagle launches outreach Facebook ‘extremely effective’ communication tool for Meadowbank, Meliadine

Agnico Eagle Mines (AEM) has announced the launch of two new Facebook pages – one for its Meadowbank mine near Baker Lake and the other for its new Meliadine project on the land near Rankin Inlet.

The pages are directed at AEM’s Nunavut employees, Kivalliq communities and key Nunavut partners and suppliers.

The pages can be followed on Facebook at AEMMeliadine and AEMMeadowbankComplex.

AEM corporate director of communications and public affairs Dale Coffin said AEM has gone to two separate pages due to its growth, with Meliadine coming on-stream shortly and pushing the company’s ranks to more than 2,000 employees in Nunavut.

Coffin said the two large operations are not close together, with Meadowbank on the land near Baker Lake and Meliadine near Rankin Inlet.

He said up until now, AEM had been using a corporate Facebook page to address some of the regular-and-proactive issues it’s dealing with in Nunavut to make sure the communities know about them.

“We felt that the time has come now, with the two operations, that we needed to have stand-alone communication tools for each operation,” said Coffin.

“It allows, for instance, Meadowbank to be able to communicate regularly with Baker Lake, because of its closeness, as well as the other communities, but primarily Baker Lake.

“In the case of Meliadine, we have Arviat, Chesterfield Inlet and Rankin Inlet communicating there, sharing stories about our employees, and posting proactive communications about what’s going on the communities that

He said ongoing employment opportunities at both Meadowbank and Meliadine are open to the people of every Kivalliq community and, in fact, there are more opportunities than there are people able to fill them.

As of June 2018, the number of Inuit from the Kivalliq working directly and indirectly for AEM was 740. AEM will be updating its employment reports in early 2019.

“We’ll be able to post jobs directly that are for people in all the communities to apply for, as well as, obviously, the training programs, work readiness, employment information sessions, labour pool information, etc.,” said Coffin.

Coffin said from AEM’s experience, Facebook has shown itself to be an effective communication tool.

He said through Facebook, AEM is able to reach a broad audience very quickly and be able to have actual dialogue with them – people ask questions about various programs or why they aren’t getting certain information and AEM is able to respond and react very quickly to their requests.

“We find Facebook extremely effective.

The communities are so far apart from one other and when it comes to the means of communication – sometimes we’re just not able to provide the sought-after information over the computer because of bandwidth – we’re able to communicate very effectively through Facebook.

“I know all of our employees at Meadowbank and Meliadine – when they’re not working, they’re using their Facebook to communicate with their families and friends.”

Raising cash for rocks Rankin Inlet The Rankin Rock peewee minor hockey team held a successful Penny Sale and Bake Sale fundraiser for the players this past Friday, Dec. 14, at the Rankin Inlet arena.

The highlight of the event was a draw for a pair of systemwide Calm Air tickets won by Rankin's Jim MacDonald.

Christmas activities Naujaat The hamlet of Naujaat has released its schedule of activities for the holiday season.

The hamlet will feature everything from a community breakfast to a community feast, indoor games, square dances, ice chiselling, a jigging contest, kids' games, radio games, a harpoon throw for accuracy, women's scavenger hunt and a fireworks display.

The Naujaat activities run from Dec. 22 to Jan. 2.

Arena closed Rankin Inlet The Hamlet of Rankin Inlet has announced the days the local arena will be closed during the holiday season.

The Rankin arena will be closed on Dec. 24, Dec. 25, Dec. 26, Dec. 31 and Jan. 1.

Christmas crafts Baker Lake The Baker Lake Wellness Centre is hosting a Christmas arts and crafts session on Wednesday, Dec. 19, and Thursday, Dec. 20, from 1 to 4:30 p.m.

The sessions are open to youths aged eight to 25.

Children under the age of eight are welcome, but must come with adult supervision to help them with the use of scissors, glue, etc.

Big donations Baker Lake The Hamlet of Baker Lake made a donation of $1,500 to the Baker Lake detachment of the RCMP's food drive this year to help provide food hampers to families in Baker that could use a little helping hand this holiday season.

Agnico Eagles Mines matched the hamlet's donation of $1,500 to the RCMP food drive, which set a target goal of $7,000 for this year's food hamper drive in Baker.

Show must go on Troupe dodges two close calls to deliver memorable production of A Charlie Brown Christmas

A return of some old friends and a little luck combined to help bring an animated holiday classic to life during the John Arnalukjuak High School (JAHS) Drama Club production of A Charlie Brown Christmas at JAHS in Arviat this past week.

The Dec. 11 and 12 shows marked the first time Charlie Brown, Snoopy and the gang appeared on an Arviat stage since 2006, and the show proved itself to only be rivalled by The Grinch in terms of popularity in the community.

The club performed four shows – one for students from the elementary and middle schools, one for JAHS students, and two public performances.

The crowds at all four shows were among the largest in recent years.

JAHS drama teacher and play director Gord Billard is in his 17th year in Arviat, and he said while The Grinch still remains the most popular play of his tenure over the years, A Charlie Brown Christmas brought in close to 200 for each public performance on top of strong audiences for the two school shows.

He said the cast was quite strong with a number of JAHS graduates returning to take roles in this year’s holiday fare.

“Noah Muckpah took the lead role again, playing the main character of Charlie Brown, and he’s been doing really well in lead roles during the past couple of plays,” said Billard.

“Lydia Kaviok was one of two actors to play Lucy. She’s the younger sister of Ruth and Ramon Kaviok – who were in almost all of my plays – and she’s coming up through the system and proving to be quite an actor, as well.

“It certainly runs in the family. I told her parents before the show – who were here to watch their third child in a major role with one of our produc-

tions – that they’d really be impressed with Lydia tonight because she played a strong, strong Lucy.”

“The other Lucy, Grade 9 student Chasity St. John, is the daughter of our school secretary, Natasha, and she’s very strong, as well, especially with remembering her lines, following direction and emoting.”

The club had flutist Sam Tagalik, who moved to Iqaluit after he graduated high school in Arviat, available to help with this year’s production.

Tagalik played the lead role of Charlie Brown in the club’s original production at JAHS in 2006.

Billard said Tagalik was quite excited to take part in this year’s production and came out to every single rehearsal.

He said Tagalik was so dedicated to the show, he ended up appointing him assistant director.

“Sam ended up being my right-hand man and it was just so cool that he was our first Charlie Brown some 12 years ago,” laughed Billard.

“He played two numbers on the flute for us, including the opening number, Christmas Time is Here, for a special introduction we came up with that really worked out well.

“Also of special note was that we had a Grade 2 student (Jamie Muckpah) play the role of Snoopy.

“Jamie had done a bit of minor work in some of our previous plays. He came to rehearsals all the time, really wanted the role of Snoopy, and did a marvelous job.”

Making Jamie’s performance even more noteworthy was the fact he came down with strep throat just a few days before the first show.

Billard said the news came as quite a shock from his mom, Tiffany, as there was no understudy for the role.

He said either Jamie was able to go on, or it was going to be a bizarre version of Charlie Brown with no Snoopy.

“I don’t know how we would have done the play without Snoopy, but Jamie soldiered through it and was a real trouper.

“He brought his Halls to help soothe his throat, stuck to his little rituals backstage and did a marvelous job pulling it off.”

An ailing Snoopy wasn’t the only brush with disaster awaiting Billard and his cast.

Right before the Dec. 11 show for the younger students, lighting technician Patrick Taleriktok called Billard to inform him that absolutely nothing was working with the 12-channel lighting system.

Billard said he shut everything down and followed his usual procedure of checking the main board step-by-step and, sure enough, the lights were dead.

“Patrick told me he got a shock from the board before he started that evening, and that happened once before several years ago, when the board shorted out and went berserk, and we had to send it out for repairs.

“When I turned the board back on, none of its sliders were working and all the lights were on that weren’t supposed to be, so it looked pretty bleak.

“Down in the bottom right-hand corner is one button for channel 12 that you can press to make that light come on at any time – there’s a similar button for every channel – but, when we pressed that button this time, it turned out to be the only one working and it turned on all 12 lights.

“That’s how we had to run the show – Patrick sitting down pressing the same button over-and-over again for 45 minutes – so Snoopy and the lighting system are two things that certainly make the show stand out for me.” bf l A ᑕᑯᕋᓐᓈᖅᑎᑦᑎᓂᖅ m4WZz 10

Tuugaalik High School Science Fair 'Of our three winning projects, two of them were based on experimentation'

Tuugaalik High School selected the students to represent it at the Kivalliq Regional Science Fair at Qitiqliq Middle School in Arviat from March 15 to 17 at the conclusion of its local science fair in Naujaat on Nov. 29.

The 2018 Tuugaalik High School Science Fair, which had 37 projects entered, was the first for senior high science teacher Gregg Durrant.

Durrant worked with students and their teachers in Grades 7 and 8 for weeks leading up to the Naujaat fair, as well as his own classes in Grades 9 to 12 to help create their projects.

The fair was open to the public in the afternoon following the judging, and a large number of community members, parents, guardians, friends and family members came to the gym to view the student projects.

Durrant said this was also the first fair for the other science teachers at the school, so, with his teaching background, he basically decided to take on most of the responsibilities himself this time.

He said it all worked out well at the end of the day, but he did find it fairly challenging with everyone asking him for guidance and support.

“At one point I mentioned to one of the other teachers that I needed about 10 more Greggs,” Durrant said with a sincere laugh.

“Going forward, my thinking is that we'll start planning earlier, let's say around the middle of January, and there will be less pressure that way.

“This year's projects leaned more towards experimentation, especially from students in Grade 7 and Grade 8.

“And, of our three winning projects, two of them were based on experimentation.”

Grade 12 student Tumasie Papatsie took top spot overall with his work on the bactericidal effect of crowberry, while Grade 10 student Emily Qaunaq took second place for her efforts on comparing the vitamin C concentration of maktaaq versus apples, oranges and strawberries,

and the team of Grade 11 student Melanie (Ayaya) Qaqqasiq and Grade 12 student Neevie Kidlapik captured third place for their investigation on whether chewing gum improves concentration.

Durrant classified the overall level of the 37 projects entered into the Tuugaalik science fair as average, taking into consideration that the students did not have much time to prepare.

He said he takes responsibility his first time organizing the fair for underestimating the amount of instructional time needed by the students, as well as the amount of time required to properly do the projects.

“So, all things considered, I found the projects to be pretty average with the noted exceptions of the first-place and secondplace projects, which were both a bit above average.

“I will be working with the students advancing to the regional fair to tighten-up or improve their projects before they head to Arviat.”

Durrant said on a scale of one to 10, he world rate his first experience working on the science fair as a five or six, taking into account he considers himself to be quite modest.

He said he conducted an after-event survey with students, teachers and a number of people who came to view the projects.

“Overall, the staff felt the fair was put together fairly well, while the majority of those who came to view the projects were pleased with what they saw.

“But now that I know what I want versus what I can do, I know it can be better next time.

“As for student effort, I would say about 70 per cent of them really wanted to do a good job with their science projects, 25 per cent were in a bit of a gray area, and five per cent just wanted to do it and get it over with.

“So wanting to do well at the regional fair still has good momentum among the largest percentage of the students, especially those with the winning projects who wanted to immediately start working with me to improve them before the March date in Arviat, so there's definitely a discernible energy there.”

Heartfelt thanks Northern News Services

As I begin my 21st year as editor of the Kivalliq News here in Rankin Inlet, I'd like to close out 2018 the same way I have closed out the majority of years past – with a huge tip of the sealskin to the good folks across the region who take the time to help Kivalliq News be a true regional newspaper throughout the year by providing news and featurestory tips, photographs from their communities, interviews with me on a subject or pointing me in the direction of someone who can.

And each and every gesture is greatly appreciated.

Over in Whale Cove, tiny in everything but stature, Mayor Stanley Adjuk has periodically lent me a hand either in the form of a direct interview, or a layman's explanation of policy or other issues of concern to the Kivalliq Wildlife Board or the Sanikiluaq hamlet itself.

There has also been the excitement of visiting former NHLers conducting hockey camps in his community, the installation of artificial turf in the arena, and current members of Team Canada conducting soccer camps with local youths.

He also, from time to time, will sit down and identify the 10 to 20 faces in a photo of a championship sports team from Whale Cove.

Not bad for a guy who once, as a then total greenhorn to the Kivalliq, nuggied his hockey buddy, Stanley, in the council chamber only to have a Nunavut MLA point out my hockey buddy, Stanley, also happened to be mayor Stanley. My face still burns with embarrassment. Thanks for everything, Stanley!

The recent Tuugaalik High School Science Fair was the first for senior science teacher Gregg Durrant, who is already hard at work planning a bigger and better science fair earlier in the school year for Tuugaalik in 2019.
