Love of science taking students to New Brunswick Kivalliq students selected for Canada-Wide Science Fair

Bad weather prevented students from the communities of Naujaat and Coral Harbour from attending the 2019 edition of the Kivalliq Regional Science Fair on March 15 to 17 at Qitiqliq Middle School in Arviat.

The annual fair is sponsored by the Kivalliq Science Educators' Community (KSEC) and is hosted by a different school in the region each year.

KSEC co-president Glen Brocklebank said they tried to have the student projects from the two communities judged at the fair, despite the students absence.

But, he said, things just didn't work out despite their best efforts.

"We got their teachers to send the projects to us, we put them on a display board and then we arranged a time during the judging period for the students to call in and still be judged over a conference call," said Brocklebank.

"It worked for the Coral

students but by the time we got everything organized and everyone online we missed our window of opportunity to have the Naujaat students judged.

"The Naujaat projects were very strong, so we owe a big apology to the students of that community for not being able to include their projects due to a series of unfortunate factors.

"We're going to revisit our policy concerning students who don't make it in due to weather and try to figure out a way that ensures all of our students get a chance to participate in the future."

Brocklebank said the theme for the 2019 science fair was renewable energy and Qitiqliq Middle School did a wonderful job hosting the event.

He said Agnico Eagle Mines (AEM) electrician Louie Tattuinee of Rankin Inlet made the trip to Arviat to go over a lot of what his occupation involves on the job with the students.

"We had another AEM group come in to display

solar-powered cars, while two of our teachers covered different battery-powered cars and chain reactions," said Brocklebank.

"So all of the students rotated through those four stations learning different aspects of renewable energy."

Arviat's Jonathan Campbell took top spot at this year's fair with his Window Parka project.

Brocklebank said Campbell's project was unique and quite impressive.

He said Campbell developed a system of insulation and material that you put in your windows during the evening to stop convection radiation and conduction heat from leaving the house.

"Jonathan's project helps a home become more fuel efficient and is a cool idea and a great concept. I was very impressed," said Brocklebank.

"We're sending three students – Jonathan Campbell of Arviat, Dustin Issaluk of Chesterfield Inlet and Joanne Putulik of Chesterfield Inlet – to the Canada-Wide Sci-

ence Fair in Fredericton, New Brunswick, from May 11 to 17.

"We're sending strong projects to the Canada-Wide Science Fair and I think we'll show well but more than 50 per cent of the projects at the national fair are mentored by some university professor in a university lab, so it's a tough playing field for our students.

"There's a lot of academic support for projects in the south."

Territorial champs Arviat/Rankin Inlet The Rankin Rock defeated a combined Arviat/Naujaat squad 8-1 to cap an undefeated run to the Nunavut Territorial Bantam Hockey Championship in Arviat earlier this month.

Iqaluit nipped a combined Whale Cove/Chesterfield Inlet team 4-3 to claim bronze at the event.

Also competing in the tournament were a combined Coral Harbour/Kugaaruk team and a combined Pangnirtung/Arctic Bay squad.

The top individual performers at the bantam territorial were Tucker St. John of the Rankin Rock (Top Goalie), Garren Voisey of the Rankin Rock (Best Defenceman), Randy Siusangnark of Arviat/Naujaat (Best Forward), Thayer Komakjuak of Arviat/Naujaat (Most Sportsmanlike Player) and Justin Towtongie of the Rankin Rock (Most Valuable Player).

Getting the cover Iqaluit/Rankin Inlet Dayle Kubluitok of Iqaluit – formerly of Rankin Inlet – has won the Northwestel Directory Cover Art competition for 2019 with her digital-art portrayal of Iqaluit's Four Corners.

The announcement was made on March 11.

A first-time entrant in the annual contest, Kubluitok recreated the downtown Iqaluit intersection by using her smartphone to digitally sketch out the scene, then added colour and shadows using a graphic design tablet at home.

Kubluitok said in a press release that she basically does all her art on her phone.

She said, at the time, she was waiting for a cab at an Iqaluit bank, so she decided to sketch out the landscape on her phone.

"The northern lights were out and I just started off with the lamppost because I thought it looked really neat," said Kubluitok. "Later that night, I decided to finish it while hanging out with my friends.

"After I posted Four Corners to Facebook, it kinda blew up. Then when I found I won, I was overwhelmed. I feel really confident now and I've been doing more and more art.

"I started getting requests for graphic design and illustration and I did some back covers of magazines. It's all been hard work, but I'm happy where I'm at right now."

Classic postponed Baker Lake The Baker Lake Minor Hockey Association's annual Hockey Spring Classic has been postponed until April 6.

The Hockey Spring Classic was originally scheduled for this past weekend, but had to be postponed due to the blizzard that tore through the Kivalliq this past Friday to Sunday.

Senior men's tourney was 'quite the ride' Team organizer Jason Todd hopes to come back together in 2020 to defend Team Todd's title

Rankin Inlet

The Rankin Miners defeated the Kivalliq Canucks 6-2 to claim the A Division championship, while Team Todd nipped Whale Cove 5-3 to claim the B Division banner at the Terence Tootoo Memorial (TTM) senior men's hockey championship in front of a jam-packed arena in Rankin Inlet on March 10.

The Miners defeated Naujaat 6-3 in one semifinal, while the Canucks defeated the Rankin Chiefs 5-2 in the other to set-up the A Division final.

In the B Division semifinals Team Todd got past Chesterfield Inlet and Whale Cove defeated Arviat, both by identical 5-4 scores to set-up the championship tilt.

TTM committee member and Miners defenseman Troy Aksalnik came out of retirement after four years away from the game to suit-up with his best friend, former NHLer Jordin Tootoo, for the tournament.

It was the first time in two decades the two played on the same team in a tournament.

Aksalnik said it didn't seem real as he and Tootoo suited-up together for the first game.

He said they had played together in exhibition games and pick-up hockey, but this was for real and that made all the difference.

"It was amazing to be sitting next to my best friend, who had been in the NHL for 15 years, getting ready to play a meaningful game again," said Aksalnik.

"I was pretty nervous, having not played in four years

and the nerves are very real until you get that first shift under your belt and it's all good after that.

"Having the two divisions really worked well.

"Historically, between the Avataq and TTM, there's usually eight to 10 mercy-rule games a tournament and there was not a single one this year, so that was pretty cool."

Aksalnik said this year's TTM was anybody's tournament in both the A and B divisions.

He said, hopefully, all teams will return in 2020 and Iqaluit may decide to return after being on hiatus the past two years.

"It was a really nice story, seeing Team Todd win the B Division this year after being in the tournament for so many years and only winning a game here and there," said Aksalnik.

"Having so many games live streamed this year was great and Gabe Karlik, James Sandy, David Ningeongan and Tommy Bruce did a great job – Gabe and James on the technical side, David with his play-by-play commentary and Tommy doing colour.

"I watched a couple of games online while I was home resting for my games and the job they did was pretty amazing.

"What I didn't like was people complaining that they should do a better job. People need to understand these guys are doing this out of the goodness of their hearts and they're still learning, so have some patience."

The TTM was five days of magic for Jason Todd, who has been entering a team of

guys just out for fun and a game of hockey for almost two decades.

In many ways, it's been a long, hard road for Team Todd, which would win the odd game over the years but was never a real threat when the tournament was a single division.

Todd said winning the B Division title was awesome.

He said when he first started Team Todd, he usually took a bunch of lads who were told they weren't good enough to play on Rankin's top teams.

"We tried to give our Rankin teams – and the rest of the regional teams – a hard time, win the odd game and have some fun," said Todd.

"This year I called a couple of lads back home and got them to make a roster and send me the list.

"I went through it and said yes, no, yes, no to certain players. There were guys who were better players but I knew they wouldn't work for one reason or another.

"We went through it three times until we came-up with a group of guys we felt would work really well together, and they did."

Nerves began to take over as Team Todd prepared for its semifinal game – uncharted waters until this year.

Todd said he was beyond excited as the game drew near.

He said while he didn't show any emotion on the outside, on the inside he was having a lot of fun and jumping for joy over the team doing so well.

"We were kind of down between the second and third period of the championship game because we were trailed

3-1. You have to credit Alfred Voisey, Shawn Smith and Robert Kabvitok for pumping the guys up before we went out to play the third," said Todd.

"We got excited again, shortened the bench for the first half of the third period, our two top lines took over and we won 5-3.

"Having two divisions was long overdue. It was fantastic to watch these teams in so many close games, with not one mercy-rule game all week.

"Both divisions being so competitive made it fun and exciting for the players and the crowds."

The TTM became more magical for Todd when he bought one raffle ticket and won the top prize of a new snowmobile.

And, the week was such a wild ride for Team Todd, they hope to bring back the same team next year.

Todd said the players have talked about keeping the team together to defend its B Division title.

He said it would be awesome to come back together as a team in 2020.

"I think most of the guys are excited about returning next year to defend our cup," said Todd. "We made history as the first Team Todd to go the final and we made the best of it.

"The lads are all pretty pumped, happy and excited over the fact we went all the way. It was quite the ride and I hope we do it again next year." bf l A ᑎᐅᕆᓐᔅ m4WZz 4

I have always considered myself fortunate that the majority of folks in the Kivalliq are music lovers who cast a wide net when it comes to the musical styles they enjoy and embrace.

I'm doubly-blessed by the fact there is a solid core of classic rock fans in the region and I've never – in my almost 21 years here – been at a loss for someone to talk music with who can provide critical insights into the sounds of today and yesteryear and who offers informed opinions on artists and musical genres, not just smothering me with their Sanikiluaq likes and dislikes.

And, every now and then, a topic comes along that often finds us chatting into the wee hours, trying to get our collective heads around the whys or why-nots of the issue.

Such was the case recently over the furor surrounding Greta Van Fleet and the negative critical reviews concerning their first album (Anthem of the Peaceful Army) in late 2018.

The problem many critics have with the American band is how much it sounds like Led Zeppelin, with lead vocalist Josh Kiszka being almost a sonic mirror image of Zep's Robert Plant.

Greta Van Fleet is not alone when it comes to this type of backlash, with groups such as Kingdom Come,

Students from five of Kivalliq's seven communities competed at the Kivalliq Regional Science Fair at Qitiqliq Middle School in Arviat earlier this month.

Arctic Return Expedition to re-enact trek of explorer John Rae

Senior students and staff members at Tuugaalik High School will have a unique experience when they gather to send off the team re-enacting the historic 650-kilometre trek across Boothia Peninsula to Rae Strait made by Orcadian explorer John Rae in 1854.

The Arctic Return Expedition will pay tribute to and raise awareness of Rae, one of the greatest explorers and surveyors to have ever lived.

The team is comprised of David Reid, Garry Tutte (filmmaker), Richard Smith and Frank Wolfe.

Rae's success was due in large part to his willingness to learn from the Indigenous people and culture of the regions he explored.

And it was during his 1854 expedition that he and his companions discovered the missing link to the first navigable Northwest Passage and the most salient facts pertaining to the fate of the failed Franklin expedition.

Tuugaalik High School principal Aubrey Bolt said an awful lot of the success achieved on Rae's trip in 1854 was because of the Inuit guides he had, who taught him how to build an iglu and hunt food on the land.

He said those are exactly the same kind of skills Tuugaalik students are learning in the school's land program.

"Rae eventually found out what had happened to the Franklin Expedition based on the oral history of the Inuit," said Bolt.

"And, of course, a lot of the history and stories from olden times are still passed down from the elders to teenagers through that same oral history.

"We here at the school certainly see the value in that and, of course, Inuit certainly see the value in the stories that are passed down from generation to generation.

"So, those two counts – the importance of land and survival skills and the value of Inuit oral history– are both important themes that we like our students to learn about and discover through what we do in school."

Bolt said the majority of senior high students in grades 10 to 12 have been learning about Rae's journey in their social studies class and how local guides were involved in his trip.

He said Rae built a stone house near the community; the remnants of which can still be found today about 20 km from Naujaat at North Pole River.

"Rae couldn't keep the stone house warm, so local Inuit taught him how to

build an iglu and, for the rest of the two winters he was here, he lived in an iglu rather than the stone house," said Bolt.

"The four expedition members are coming to talk to our students on March 27 and then they'll walk to the stone house where we're going to meet them on the 29th.

"A group of our students and senior high staff are going to give them, sort of, a send-off from the same stone house that Rae left from."

Bolt said the expedition's visit is a big day for the school because it focuses on the history that happened in Naujaat almost 170 years ago.

He said the school's shop/culture teacher, Laimmiki Malliki, will also be playing a role in the expedition's visit.

"Laimmiki will lead our group out to meet the expedition at the stone house and the team members are going to talk to him about some of the oral traditions and histories of the area," said Bolt.

"Laimmiki has walked the route many times and the team members have all ready been in conversations with us to find out how long it is, how long it will take and things of that nature.

"Laimmiki is our resident expert and they're getting information from the best when they're talking with him."
