A total of 10 hockey zebras earned their stripes for the 2018-2019 season during an official's certification and recertification clinic held at Simon Alaittuq School in Rankin Inlet on Dec. 15.

Earning their stripes for the season were senior officials Jeff Tulugak (Level 2), David Clark (Level 2), Christian Gee (Level 2), Kris Okpatauyak (Level 2), Noel Kaludjak (Level 2) and Kyle Tattuinee (Level 3), and minor hockey Level 1 officials Owen Connelly-Clark, Sandy Tattuinue, Robert Jr. Alareak and Kadin Eetuk. Absent from clinic were Level 2 official Eric Nukapiak and Level 4 official Max MacDonald.

The course was led by Hockey Canada Level 4 official and master course conductor Darrell Greer. Greer is also the editor of Kivalliq News.

The Rankin officiating program has been down a bit in numbers during the past few years, and officiating organizers are hopeful the current hockey season will see a slight bump in the overall number officials actually working games.

Rankin Inlet hosts numerous tournaments throughout the season such as the Arctic Atoms, Powerful Peewee, Rankin Rock Bantam Championship, Polar Bear Plate, Junior 'C' Challenge and Ter-

ence Tootoo Memorial events, in addition to regular season and playoff action in the Rankin Inlet Senior Men's Hockey League. Robert Jr. Alareak recently moved to Rankin from Arviat and said he's been waiting a long time to take this officiating course.

He said he's looking forward to any games the local minor hockey association can schedule him for this season.

"I reffed a lot in Arviat, but not much as a certified official," said Alareak.

"I'm new to the community, but I know most of the players and refs and I'm looking forward to reffing in Rankin this year."

Senior official Noel Kaludjak, 60, said he's looking forward to another hockey season.

He said it's still too early to decide if this will be his final season wearing the stripes.

"I like reffing because it's fun and good exercise," said Kaludjak. "I've loved hockey since I learned the game in Whale Cove around the mid'70s, starting with floor hockey then ice hockey by playing on a frozen lake and the sea-ice.

I played in my first tournament in Churchill, Man., and I reffed a tournament in Arviat in the early '80s.

Workshop explores youth perspectives Maani Ulujuk students write and record four songs, star in video on colonial history and Inuit culture

In a darkened makeshift recording studio at Maani Ulujuk Ilinniarvik, four groups of students from Grades 7 and 8 recorded songs they wrote themselves.

Twenty-eight students participated.

The four songs – developed in conjunction with a group of Indigenous and non-Indigenous songwriters, producers, and art educators called Darkspark, under the umbrella of their Four Directions project – are melded into one video shot during a two-week span in November and December.

The video opens with the Elder involved with the project, Quluaq Pilakapsi.

"I have something in my heart that is bothering me. If I don't say it to anybody, they won't know me. If I don't say I need help, nobody will be there for me. Only if I express my needs will someone help me," she says.

"I thank you for coming here. By sharing knowledge, we can help each other."

Artist Terrie Kusugak was also part of the project.

"Inuit are not a people of Elders anymore – we're a people of youth. Last year in Arviat there were 105 kids being

enrolled in the kindergarten. We're stuck between wanting to be true to our culture, but also growing into the future," says Kusugak in the video.

"Inuit have always adapted and I'm sure we'll adapt again."

But the bulk of the video shows scenes from inside and outside the school, featuring the students, their thoughts, their songs, and their considerable talents.

Nancy Karetak-Lindell, former president of the Inuit Circumpolar Council Canada, met members of Darkspark on a Students on Ice expedition, where they were leading similar workshops with students.

Ilitaqsiniq Nunavut Literacy Council came on board to help with funding.

The video and the songs relate the students' messages – strong, hopeful and beautiful. The project concluded with a community event, where the students heard the final edits of their songs for the first time.

"They were so very proud," said Ilitaqsiniq staff member Kelly ClarkLindell.

"It's empowering stuff, it's moving," said Ilitaqsiniq's executive director Adriana Kusugak, adding that includes the sections of the main video where the students are interviewed.

The two women especially note one boy, who they say has every reason to be angry at the world.

"But in this workshop he got to be the star of the show. He was the leader for his group. He was the joker. You just saw his personality shine through. He really enjoyed the mixing, the producing.

I think it was just something that spoke to him," said Adriana.

Mel Larkin, one of Darkspark's cofounders, explains the group's mandate is harnessing the power of pop music in order to empower youth to create social change.

"The Four Directions project came in 2014 on the Tyendinaga Mohawk territory, which is in Ontario, close to where myself and the other co-founder live," said Larkin.

They did a month-long workshop there in songwriting and recording, where the youth decided they wanted to tackle Canadian history from their perspective.

"And talk about the ways that colonization had really impacted them and their families and their communities," Larkin said.

At the conclusion of the workshop, the youth challenged the co-founders to take the project to the four directions of Canada.

Charges stayed Rankin Inlet A four-year nightmare seemingly came to a close for Dave Wiseman of Rankin Inlet when charges of insurance fraud against him were stayed this past week.

Wiseman was charged following a furnace fire that damaged his business garage.

Program launches Rankin Inlet Susan Aglukark, through her foundation The Arctic Rose Foundation, launched the foundation's first program, Creative Cultural Reflections, in Rankin Inlet on Jan. 10 through partnership with Maani Ulujuk Ilinniarvik.

Founded by singer/songwriter Susan Aglukark, the purpose of the Arctic Rose Foundation is to nurture Northern children and youth in their efforts to engage all aspects of their lives.

Prize winners Rankin Inlet/Chesterfield Inlet Excitement was in the air as programs in Chesterfield Inlet and Rankin Inlet both were winners of a substantial Arctic Inspiration Prize (AIP) in January.

The Rankin Rock Hockey Camp – which is designed and led by the community's recreation director, David Clark – and the Victor Sammurtok School teacher Glen Brocklebank-designed Qajaq Program were each named winners.

Big winner Rankin Inlet It was an unforgettable moment of tension and excitement when Mike Shouldice drew the ace of spades and claimed the mammoth jackpot that had built up with the Chase the Ace fundraiser in Rankin Inlet on Jan. 5.

The fundraiser – a joint effort between the hamlet's volunteer fire department and recreation department – netted Shouldice a windfall of $82,870.

Big trip Naujaat Macleod Arnatiaq, 14, was surprised, shocked, and overthe-moon happy when he was told by Tuugaalik High School vice-principal Julia MacPherson that he would be heading to Calgary to see an NHL game between the Flames and the Nashville Predators. He would also get to meet Calgary defenceman Travis Hamonic.

The news just kept getting better as Macleod was accompanied on his trip by his father, Emmanuel Uttak, and his younger brother, Pakak.

Soccer camp Rankin Inlet Close to 150 kids a day took part in a special three-day soccer camp hosted by the Rankin Inlet Wolves Soccer Association this past month.

The camp was organizer by local coach Paul Stroeder through the Nunavut Soccer Association and facilitated by instructor Greg Walker of Winnipeg.

Rankin takes tourney Arviat Rankin Inlet withstood a furious comeback attempt by Arviat's Arctic Connection and held on for a 3-2 win in the final of the Jon Lindell Memorial (JLM) Calm Air Cup senior men's hockey championship in Arviat.

Rankin got past Kivalliq in one semifinal, while Arctic Connection defeated Coral Harbour in the other to set up the championship tilt.

Atom champs Rankin Inlet Rankin Rock A got past a spirited Arviat Wolves squad 10-6 to claim the 2018 Arctic Atoms title in Rankin Inlet on Feb. 4.

The tourney also featured the first all-girls team to compete (Rock Girls), and the Rock Novice and Rock B teams, as well as Naujaat, Coral Harbour and Baker Lake.

Reaching out Baker Lake Agnico Eagle Mines (AEM) reached out to prospective employees in a big way in February.

AEM took part in its first virtual career fair on Feb. 6 and 7, with people around the globe able to click on a link and learn about career opportunities in the mining industry with the company.

The deaths of Arviat's Aaron Gibbons and Naujaat's Darryl Kaunak earlier in 2018 were the first polar bear attack deaths in Nunavut during the past 18 years.

All in all, equal parts of prosperity and challenges await the territory in 2019, and the Kivalliq in particular, as we begin walking the path of a brand-new year.

Firefighters train Rankin Inlet February saw a group of Rankin Inlet volunteer firefighters complete the first responder medical program in Rankin.

The week-long course was facilitated by Lieut. Mitchell Sherrin and Chantelle Pohl of Salt Spring Island Fire and Rescue in British Columbia.

The extensive course was arranged by Rankin Fire Chief Mark Wyatt with funding from the Municipal Training Organization.

Women speak Rankin Inlet Susan Aglukark brought tears to the eyes of many, including Commissioner Qajaq Robinson, as she gave the final testimony

at the national inquiry into Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women and Girls' stop in Rankin Inlet.

The inquiry heard from 10 people during its three days at the Siniktarvik Hotel in Rankin from Feb. 20 to 22.

Cadet anniversary Naujaat The third time did, indeed, prove to be the charm when the 3055 Royal Canadian Army Cadet Corps (RCACC) held its official 20th anniversary celebration in Naujaat on March 7.

The event had previously been rescheduled twice to no avail when Mother Nature simply refused to co-operate.

The gathering featured 32 current cadets being joined by more than 50 people from the community.

Gymnasts shine Rankin Inlet The members of the Rankin Inlet Aqsarniit Ujauttaq (Northern Lights) gymnastics club crossed one stop off of their dream list, and put in a strong showing at a competition in Las Vegas, U.S.A., from March 2 to 4.

The event played host to more than 80 clubs from across Canada and the United States.

The Rankin gymnasts impressed with their group routine, which utilized the Jerry Cans song, Ukiuq, as the sound track to their performance.

Peewee win Rankin Inlet Players on the Rankin Rock A team found themselves in the position of underdogs before rising up and capturing the Powerful Peewee championship in Rankin Inlet on March 4.

The Rock lost to both Arviat and Coral Harbour in the round-robin segment of play, and then had to defeat Arviat in semifinal action before coming back from a 4-1 deficit to defeat Coral 5-4 in a thrilling gold medal game.

Arviat captured bronze at the event.

Brothers shine Kivalliq Brothers Johnathan and William Campbell of John Arnalukjuak High School in Arviat captured the top two spots at the Kivalliq Regional Science Fair in Rankin Inlet from March 2-4.

Johnathan finished first overall with his work on creating soil with natural items found in the Arctic to grow zucchini, carrots and radishes.

William took second for his experimentation with using the iglu's cold-air-trap design in modern buildings to save on fuel usage and heating costs.

Elder honoured Baker Lake The Sovereign's Medal for Volunteers was presented to Baker Lake elder Winnie Owingayak during Nunavut Commissioner Nellie Kusugak's visit to the community on March 1.

The Governor General-issued medal was bestowed upon Owingayak, a respected language advocate, for her work in developing Tuhaalruuqtut, Ancestral Sounds, an interactive exhibit of Inuit songs, legends and photographs on display at the Inuit Heritage Centre in Baker Lake.

Tourney champs Rankin Inlet The Rankin Miners broke a six-year drought by defeating team Rankin Inlet 4-0 to claim the 2018 Terence Tootoo Memorial (TTM) senior men's championship in front of a soldout arena in Rankin Inlet on March 11.

Arviat nipped Coral Harbour 2-1 to claim bronze.

Rock strike gold Iqaluit The Rankin Rock bantam team defeated the host squad to strike gold in the Bantam Division of the Toonyk Tyme minor hockey championships in Iqaluit, April 2.

The event was a great tuneup for the Rock bantams as they prepared to head to Winnipeg, Man., to compete in an indigenous hockey tournament being hosted by the Manitoba Aboriginal Sports and Recreation Council on the weekend of April 24.

The Rankin Rock midgets also put in a fine showing at Toonyk Tyme, striking bronze at the event.

Dance time Arviat The community of Arviat hosted the second annual Phillip Kigusiutnak Memorial Square Dance Showdown this past weekend, from April 12 to 15.

Square dance teams from Gjoa Haven, Rankin Inlet and Naujaat among others travelled to Arviat to compete in the event.

School lends helping hand Rankin Inlet Students and staff members at Simon Alaittuq School (SAS) raised $600 in remembrance of those who lost their lives in the Humboldt, Sask., tragedy during a special Jersey Day at the school in Rankin Inlet on April 13.

While SAS is one of the smallest schools in the territory, the students showed themselves as having some of the biggest hearts in raising the $600, wrote principal Bev Hill in a press release.

"Out of a terrible tragedy, our students learned empathy and the strength of many working together for a common cause," wrote Hill.

Exchange ends Rankin Inlet There were more than a few moist eyes when the Mimico Canadiens hockey team of Mimico, Ont., departed Rankin Inlet after their 10-day stay in the community this past week.

The Mimico youths and their parents and chaperones were in Rankin for the second half of the Northern Exchange program, which is mainly funded by Experiences Canada through Heritage Canada.

Rankin Inlet Children of all ages were treated to a great time during the annual Pakallak Tyme festivities in Rankin Inlet in May. Hamlet recreation co-ordinator David Clark noted that the hamlet had record turnouts for many of the events held during the eightday event which ran from April 29 to May 6.

Kivalliq Junior Canadian Rangers from four communities squared off in the Kivalliq regional marksmanship selection competition in Rankin Inlet on April 8 for a chance to represent Nunavut at a national competition in May. Junior Rangers from Arviat, Whale Cove, Chesterfield Inlet and Sanikiluaaq took part in the regional competition, with the Arviat team of Liam Arloo, Jaime Copland, Pauline Sewoee, Shania Kritaqlilu and Paulie Issumatarjuak Jr. taking top spot.

Issumatarjuak Jr. also took the Top Marksman Award.

Arviat Five students from Arviat's John Arnalukjuak High School all brought home medals from the 13th Nunavut Skills Competition in Iqaluit. Winning silver medals were Mallory Okatsiak in hairstyling, Damaris Nutarasungnik in photography, and Blair Aulatjut and Paulie Issumatarjuak in video production.

Meeka Koomuk took bronze in aesthetics while, another Arviat participant, Daniel Alagalak, earned silver in postsecondary carpentry.

Naujaat Naujaat youth had a great old time finishing out hockey-andskating season in style, thanks to an outdoor rink that was built next to Tusarvik Elementary School in Naujaat in April.

Acting senior administrative officer (SAO) Kevin Tegumiar said the idea for the outdoor rink came from Naujaat Mayor Solomon Malliki, with SAO Rob Hedley taking the idea another step by applying to the North West Company for funding to cover the project.

Rankin Inlet/Chesterfield Inlet A young Belgian man trying to complete a fantastic voyage from Nunavut to Argentina made stops in Chesterfield Inlet and Rankin Inlet in April.

Arnaud Maldague, 29, of Brussels, Belgium, left Kugaaruk on Jan. 4 on a trip that will see him cover 30,000 kilometres and pass through 16 countries until he lands in Ushuaea, South America, in 2020 or 2021.

He is making the Manneken Trip devoid of any fuel-powered means; covering the distance by skiing, snow-kiting, cycling, kayaking, sailing and even horseback riding.

Racing champs Rankin Inlet Leo (Dali) Kaludjak returned to the winner's circle by capturing the Senior Division of the Kivalliq Challenge snowmobile races in Rankin Inlet on May 8.

Troy Makpah captured the Junior Division crown (18 years of age and younger), while Ross Tatty grabbed the checkered flag in the Master's Division (35 and older).

The Kivalliq Challenge saw a total of $42,000 handed out in prize monies between the three divisions this year.

Thrift store Baker Lake The Abluqta Society opened the doors to a new thrift store in Baker Lake on Friday, May 11.

The society had been planning the store's opening for about three years, and had also raised $30,000 to employ a store manager.

The Baker thrift store is modelled after the Ikurraq Deacon's Cupboard in Rankin Inlet; an operation which sells good used clothing at greatly reduced prices and is also a food bank.

Called to TASK Baker Lake Senior students at Jonah Amitnaaq Secondary School (JASS) were immersed in the trades during the fifth annual Trades Awareness, Skills and Knowledge (TASK) Week in Baker Lake in May. This year's trades introduction featured instruction in the six disciplines of mechanics, welding, culinary arts, electrical, plumbing and hairdressing.

The TASK Week initiative is a partnership between Agnico Eagle Mines (AEM), the Government of Nunavut, the territorial Department of Education and Nunavut Arctic College.

Chesterfield Inlet Victor Sammurtok School tied its previous high of graduates when six Grade 12 students received their high school diplomas at the school on June 8 in Chesterfield Inlet.

A large number of friends and family members came out to help celebrate the achievement of the school's Class of 2018, and a special prom ball was held in their honour.

Students all SET Naujaat Students at Tuugaalik High School were competing to see how far they could fly off the handle in Naujaat this past month.

The students were participating in the Kivalliq Science Educators Community- developed Science, Engineering and Technology (SET) Challenge that had them building their own catapult-like devices and seeing who could launch a projectile the farthest with it.

Jail fire Rankin Inlet The outcome could have been a lot worse after an inmate managed to light the bunk in his cell on fire at the Rankin Inlet Healing Facility in Rankin on June 11.

Rankin Fire Chief Mark Wyatt said 10 firefighters and four trucks were on scene shortly after the call came in at 4:14 p.m. to keep the damage to a minimum.

There were no injuries reported in the incident.

New premier Arviat/Nunavut Arviat's Joe Savikataaq became Nunavut's new premier after a non-confidence vote ousted former premier Paul Quassa this past Thursday, June 14, in Iqaluit.

Savikataaq came out ahead of Rankin Inlet's Lorne Kusugak in the second round of voting to name a new premier.

The event marked the first time a Nunavut premier lost to a non-confidence motion brought forward, with Quassa only serving seven months of his term as premier.

Executives named Kivalliq Patrick Tagoona of Rankin Inlet was selected to lead the Kivalliq Chamber of Commerce (KCC) during the chamber's annual general meeting (AGM) in Rankin on June 18 and 19.

Bear fatality Arviat The community of Arviat was grieving deeply when Aaron Gibbons, 31, was killed by a polar bear on July 3.

Gibbons was unarmed when he encountered the bear on Sentry Island, a popular fishing and hunting spot located about 10 kilometres outside of the hamlet.

Community members said Gibbons was with his children at the time and put himself between them and the bear.

Ball champs Rankin Inlet/Coral Harbour In a wild game that saw both sides have their chances, Coral Harbour scored a pair of runs in their final at bat to defeat Rankin Inlet's Kativik squad 15-14 and claim the 2018 Calm Air Cup mixed slo-pitch championship.

The Calm Air Cup is a SPN national qualifying event.

Coral dethroned the defending champions, New Era, in their semifinal, while Kativik defeated another strong Rankin team, the Cubs, in their semi to set up the championship tilt.

Also competing in this year's Calm Air Cup were the Rankin Rebels, the Sons of Pitchers, the Baffin Blue Sox and a combined Chesterfield Inlet/Baker Lake team.

Business scholarship Rankin Inlet The Atuqtuarvik Corp. announced the creation of the John Hickes Business Scholarship in Rankin Inlet this past summer.

The scholarship was created to honour Hickes of Rankin Inlet for his leadership as an original and long-serving board member of the corporation.

The scholarship also recognizes Hickes's life-long commitment and involvement in business as an owner, as well as his many contributions in helping to establish a stable and progressive economy in Nunavut.

The scholarship is being offered to students who are pursuing a post-secondary education in the field of business.

Installments delivered Coral Harbour/Nunavut The Government of Canada delivered the first of two $8.25-million annual installments of the federal gas tax fund (GTF) to Nunavut this past summer.

Nunavut will receive more than $16.5 million this year through the fund.

Coral Harbour will use its share of the funding to help replace the original lighting at its arena with solar panels. The move will reduce energy dependency and carbon dioxide emissions.

Rankin Inlet Team New Era of Rankin Inlet showed Nunavut can be quite competitive on the national stage with a strong showing at the annual SPN National Slo-Pitch Championship at St. John's, Nfld., this past summer.

Playing in the Co-ed Division, the Rankin squad went 2-2 in round-robin play before being eliminated 18-16 by Newfoundland's Yes B'y team in playoff action.

Busy weekend Rankin Inlet Members of the rescue and ambulance crews of the Rankin Inlet Fire Department were especially thankful for the extensive training they received during an incredibly busy weekend in Rankin from Aug. 3 to 5.

The weekend saw crew members respond to nine incidents involving 16 patients during a 30-hour period, including a twotruck collision near the healing facility and an accident involving two ATVs.

Facelift Rankin Inlet Turaarvik Inns North was undergoing a massive overhaul in Rankin Inlet in August.

The restaurant and a portion of the hotel shutdown on Aug. 8 and were expected to be closed until the end of the month as the renovations took place.

The restaurant was being repainted, and is receiving new flooring and all new furniture. The equipment was also removed from the kitchen and received a thorough cleaning.

Digging day camp Chesterfield Inlet The summer day camp held at Victor Sammurtok School in Chesterfield Inlet went over well with both kids and parents alike.

The day camp was aimed at children six years of age to 12, and attracted close to 15 kids per day on average throughout the summer months.

New sport Arviat A new sport arrived in Arviat in a big way in August.

Roller hockey enthusiast and Team Canada player Michael (Mike) Hunt and his partner and floor installer, Lincoln Whitehead, came to Arviat to install the Sport Court floor in the arena and conduct a week-long camp to introduce local youth to the sport.

Corps in trouble Naujaat The most successful cadet corps in Nunavut during the past few years appeared to be in its death throes in Naujaat in August.

The 3055 Royal Canadian Army Cadet Corps was dealt a devastating blow earlier this year when its commanding officer, Lloyd Francis, announced he was leaving the community after

five years at the helm of the corps.

And, despite an exhaustive search, there was still no one willing to step up and keep the program running.

Arviat/Coral Harbour Seven Kivalliq youths were among the 130 high school and university students who joined educators from around the world on the two-week Students on Ice expedition to western Greenland and Nunavut's High Arctic that came to a close on Aug. 7.

Representing the Kivalliq on the expedition were Wayne Muckpah, and Tapisa Tattuinee of Arviat, Madison (Bruce) Pudlat, Shantea Bruce and Quintin Nester of Coral Harbour and Teegan Tucktoo and Gail Wallace of Rankin Inlet.

Bear attack Naujaat One man was dead following the second deadly polar bear attack in the Kivalliq during the past two months.

Darryl Kaunak, 33, of Naujaat lost his life when a female polar bear and her cub surprised he and his hunting companions, Leo Ijjangiaq and Laurent Jr. Uttak,. The three were having tea on the morning of Aug. 23 at Lyon Inlet, about 70 km southeast of Naujaat.

Aaron Gibbons of Arviat lost his life on July 4 when he heroically protected his family from a polar bear attack. He was unarmed at the time.

First Inuk Rankin Inlet Kris Ukpataujaq of Rankin Inlet was over the moon when he found out he was one of 20 players invited to a Team Canada national futsal evaluation camp in Gatineau, Que., in September.

Ukpataujaq, 26, became the first futsal player from Nunavut to be invited to a national camp.

Settlement reached Arviat A proposed settlement worth $5 million was reached between the Ahiarmiut Relocation Society and the Government of Canada. The deal was announced by Ahiarmiut Relocation Society legal counsel Steven L. Cooper on Aug. 27.

The claim was originally filed against the federal government in 2008 by the society, which represents the interests of all Ahiarmiut who traditionally lived around Ennadai Lake.

Baker Lake The Baker Lake Prenatal Nutrition Project hosted a mocktail tasting table at the local Northern store to mark International Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorders (FASD) Awareness Day in Baker Lake on Sept. 9.

The event was organized by the Baker Lake Prenatal Nutrition Project with funding from the Government of Nunavut's Department of Health (Community Wellness) and administered by the hamlet of Baker Lake.

United for Life Baker Lake A special United for Life Summit 2018 was held in Baker Lake from Sept. 11 to 13.

The event was hosted by the hamlet of Baker Lake and Nunavut Suicide Prevention Strategy partners.

The gathering featured scheduled presentations by a number of Nunavut's top leaders and mental-health experts.

A wide-ranging variety of workshops were also held, as well as group panel discussions and other activities.

Mayors meet Naujaat Mayors, senior administrative officers and numerous representatives from government and the private sector, including Calm Air president Gary Bell, Nunavut Premier Joe Savikataaq and Community and Government Services Minister Lorne Kusugak descended upon Naujaat for the region's annual Kivalliq Mayor's Meeting on Sept. 12 and 13.

Kivalliq Inuit Association president David Ningeongan was also slated to attend the gathering.

Unrest at KIA AGM Rankin Inlet The Kivalliq Inuit Association (KIA) wrapped-up its annual general meeting (AGM) from Oct. 2 to 4 amidst a firestorm of controversy on social media aimed at KIA president David Ningeongan in Rankin Inlet.

The controversy was ignited by Richard Connelly, who raised numerous concerns on social media questioning Ningeongan's business practices as president of the KIA, the effectiveness of the Inuit Impact Benefit Agreement (IIBA) with Agnico Eagle Mines (AEM) for the Meliadine gold project near Rankin, and why Sakku Investments – the investment arm of the KIA – seemed to be competing with local Inuit-owned companies that employ more Inuit than the companies being awarded the contracts.

Strange catch

Baker Lake Agnico Eagle Mines (AEM) answered the call from the hamlet of Baker Lake to help clear the community landfill of a large number of potentially hazardous waste products.

This past summer, AEM helped the hamlet identify the hazardous waste and helped remove a total of 53 20-foot containers, having them shipped out of Baker Lake and sent to recycling and dangerous goods disposal sites in Southern Canada.

Coral Harbour One of the longest-living vertebrates known on Earth, a Greenland shark, was caught in a whaling net near Coral Harbour on Oct. 1.

The rare catch measured more than 3 metres (10 feet) in length and weighed close to 227 kilograms (500 pounds).

Dinner and stage

Rankin Inlet Members of the Rankin Inlet Volunteer Fire Department passed on their message of fire safety to students in Rankin Inlet to mark Fire Prevention Week in the community from Oct. 7 to 13.

Five Rankin firefighters were involved with the trips to the schools, with firefighter Catherine Tatty-Kabvitok being commended by Fire Chief Mark Wyatt for taking the lead in the presentation and doing an excellent job.

Arviat The Arviat Drama Club went back to an old standard and delivered A Thanksgiving to Remember in both Inuktitut and English at John Arnalukjuak High School in Arviat, Oct. 6.

The cast also threw in a holiday meal following the performance to all who attended.

The play featured eight main actors with speaking roles and another 14 playing the homeless people at the soup kitchen and shelter.

ᐅᓇᑕᖅᑐᒃᓴᕋᓛᓂ ᐃᓚᐅᖃᑕᐅᔪᖅ ᑐᕈᐃ ᕗᑦᕗᑦ ᐃᓕᓯᔪᖅ ᐱᕈᖅᓯᐊᙳᐊᓂᒃ ᐊᒪᐅᕆᓚᐅᖅᑕᓂ ᐃᓱᒪᒋᑉᓗᒍ, ᒪᑎᐊᓯ ᐳᕋᓯᐅᓪ, Jordin Tootoo of Rankin Inlet announced his retirement ᐃᖅᑲᐅᒪᓐᓇᐅᔪᒥ ᐅᑉᓗᕐᒥ ᒫᓂ ᐅᓗᔪᒃ ᐃᓕᓐᓂᐊᕐᕕᒡᔪᐊᕐᒥ ᑲᖏᖅᖠᓂᕐᒥ ᓄᕕᐱᕆ 11-ᒥ. from the NHL in Brandon, Man., on Friday, Oct. 19.

Tootoo was in Brandon to attended the Wheat Kings game that evening, ending his major junior and professional hockey career in the same community he launched it.

Drafted 98th overall by the Nashville Predators in the fourth round of the 2001 NHL Entry Draft, Tootoo played 723 games in the world's top league, amassing 65 goals, 96 assists, 161 points and 1,010 penalty minutes. He also played in Detroit, New Jersey and Chicago during his 13-year career.

Rankin Inlet/Kivalliq Concentration, creativity and beauty were all on full display when one entered the Kivalliq Art Camp in Rankin Inlet from Nov. 5 to 12.

The camp concluded with a full showing of the students' work on display at the lab building next to the Learning Centre, Nov. 12.

The annual camp is sponsored by the Kivalliq Inuit Association, and was lead by instructors Rob Saley, Paul Mantrop and Andrew Qappik.

Kind donation Rankin Inlet/Kivalliq The sense of community evident during the week of Remembrance Day was felt that much stronger in Rankin Inlet when Royal Canadian Legion Branch 169 presented the RCMP with an $11,000 donation to its Kivalliq-wide Christmas Food Hamper in Rankin, Nov. 9.

No injuries were reported to the occupants of the dwelling and the fire did not spread to any of the adjoining units.

Kivalliq The federal government announced $786,000 in funding to aid four Kivalliq projects in Chesterfield Inlet, Rankin Inlet and Whale Cove on Nov. 15.

The CanNor funding will see $250,000 go to each of Turaarvik Co-Op Hotel North in Rankin Inlet, Pitsiulak Co-op and hotel in Chesterfield Inlet and the Issatik Co-op hotel in Whale Cove.

The remaining $36,440 goes to the revitalization of Thule Qammaqs (sod houses) archeological sites near the hamlet of Chesterfield Inlet.

Rankin Inlet Jeremy Maley was modestly settling into the role of role model and hometown hero of sorts in December after becoming a pilot and taking to the air as a first officer for Calm Air. Maley, 21, became the first Inuk pilot to fly for the airline when he took to the skies for the first time.

Rankin Inlet A hamlet CAT D6T bulldozer was successfully pulled from the water after it crashed through the ice on Williamson Lake on Nov. 15.

The lower half of the bulldozer was submerged in the lake for about 5.5 hours before being pulled out.

There were no injuries in the mishap.

Arviat Grade 11 student Lydia Kaviok, 16, was selected along with fellow John Arnalukjuak High School student Leo Tatty to make the journey to Iqaluit and to participate in the territory's Youth Parliament.

Kaviok said she learned a lot and enjoyed the experience immensely.

Kivalliq Science and traditional Inuit knowledge were at logger heads once again following the release of a draft management plan for polar bears by the Government of Nunavut (GN) during November's public consultations in Iqaluit.

The four-years-in-the-making plan calls for Inuit knowledge to play a far-more-important role in bear management, claiming the bears are adapting to climate change and their increasing numbers are putting the public at risk.

Two deaths in the Kivalliq earlier this year – Aaron Gibbons of Arviat and Darryl Kaunak of Naujaat – were the first polar bear attack deaths in Nunavut during the past 18 years.

Chesterfield Inlet The innovators and discoverers of tomorrow took centre stage in Chesterfield Inlet when Victor Sammurtok School (VSS) hosted its Elementary Science Fair on Dec. 4.

The local fairs in schools across the region lead up to the Kivalliq Science Educator's Community's (KSEC) Kivalliq Regional Science Fair where students vie for the right to represent the Kivalliq at the national Canada-Wide Science Fair.

The 2019 regional science fair will be held at Qitiqliq Middle School in Arviat from March 15 to 17.

Science time

Arviat A return of some old friends and a little luck combined to help bring an animated holiday classic to life during the John Arnalukjuak High School (JAHS) Drama Club production of A Charlie Brown Christmas. The event was held at the school in Arviat t in December.

The Dec. 11 and 12 shows marked the first time Charlie Brown, Snoopy and the gang appeared on an Arviat stage since 2006, and the show proved itself to only be rivaled by the Grinch in terms of popularity in the community.

Naujaat Students had the chance to explore a little space during Acura's Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM) Challenge at Tuugaalik High School in Naujaat on Nov. 16.

The project was overseen by science teacher Gregg Durrant and principal Aubrey Bolt, with this year's STEM theme being space exploration.

Fire strikes fourplex in Rankin

Rankin Inlet The quick action of the community's firefighters prevented what could have been a major blaze in Rankin Inlet on Thursday, Dec. 6.

The fire started in the middle unit of a fourplex in Rankin's Area Five when a child was left unattended and ended-up playing with a lighter on a bed in the back bedroom.

Charlie Brown Christmas

Students singing Rankin Inlet Grade 7 and 8 students took part in the Four Directions Project led by Darkspark – a not-for-profit arts organization that uses songwriting and recording to engage youth and promote -cross-cultural understanding – at Maani Ulujuk Ilinniarvik (MUI) in Rankin Inlet in December.

The project uses songwriting and recording to help participating youth discover how colonial prejudices and stereo prejudices were created, are maintained and may be broken.
