Public presentation Chesterfield Inlet The Department of Culture and Heritage will be giving a public presentation about its grants and contributions programs on Thursday, Jan. 10, in Chesterfield Inlet at the hamlet council chambers from 7 to 9 p.m.

Staff from the Department of Culture and Heritage will be giving information and answering questions about the funding categories of heritage programs (preserving cultural legacy), elders and youth programs (support for elders and youth activities), Inuit Qaujimajatuqangit (maintaining Inuit societal values with social well-being initiatives) and official languages (language promotion, protection and preservation).

The session is free and open to the public and a question-and-answer session will follow the presentation. Snacks and refreshments will be provided.

Inuktitut series premiers Nunavut/Kivalliq The Inuit Broadcasting Corporation (IBC) introduced a new series this past Monday, Jan. 7, on the Aboriginal Peoples Television Network (APTN) called Uakallanga! Uakallanga! (Wow, impressive!).

The concept of turning nothing into something or making something into something extraordinary is exactly what Inuit have done for centuries for survival, function and purpose, according to a release.

Using materials from nature, reusing un-utilized materials and recycling good materials to create something useful is a way of life for many in the North.

Inuit make things from by-products of hunted animals all the time such as tools, clothing, household items and even devises for transportation.

During this series viewers will see Inuit make the incredible things made traditionally and how Inuit make and use their creations today.

Show host Annabella Piugattuk learns how resourceful Inuit are as she's taught skills such as making a drum, hunting tools, sealskin crafts, an ulu and an amauti during the 13-episode series presented in Inuktitut with English subtitles.

Uakallanga! will continue to air on Mondays (7:30 p.m. in the Kivalliq), with repeats shown on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Fridays at different times on the APTN North feed.

New training program Arviat A new eight-week training program specifically designed to help Inuit enter and thrive in the modern workforce will get underway on Feb. 4 at the Inns North Conference Centre in Arviat.

The curriculum of Hatuqiniq (Return Knowledge) focuses on the nine essential skills of employment as well as other practical and locally-relevant skills needed for developing an effective career in Nunavut.

The program was developed by Iqaluit-based Sundog Management and Toronto-based Navigator Management and Holdings.

The Hatuqiniq program will be taught by training specialists using a delivery model tailored to suit the needs of at-risk youth in Nunavut communities and all students will receive a weekly education bursary for the length of the program.

Funding is provided by the Government of Nunavut's Department of Family Services.

Grade 7 and 8 students took part in the Four Directions Project led by Darkspark – a not-for-profit arts organization that uses songwriting and recording to engage youth and promote cross-cultural understanding – at Maani Ulujuk Ilinniarvik (MUI) in Rankin Inlet in December.

The program helps participating youth discover how colonial prejudices and stereotypes were created, are maintained and may be broken.

Led by a team of Indigenous and nonIndigenous performing artists and arts educators, the students write and record songs in response. The experience helps them build empathy, intercultural understanding and mutual respect.

The Darkspark team was in Rankin Inlet from Nov. 25 until Dec. 3.

MUI teacher Emily Gee was the lead local educator and teacher on-call working on the project with the Rankin youth and Darkspark members.

Gee said she worked with the Grade 7 and 8 teachers to select 27 students from four different classrooms to participate in the project.

She said the students had a general understanding of what the project was about and that they would be singing and recording music and talking about their community and their lives.

"All of the students had that interest to start with and the five Darkspark team members quickly got to know the students and their strengths and also got the students feeling comfortable with each other," said Gee. "They talked to the students a little bit about colonization and tried to help them understand how their ancestors' past might affect the present.

"They brought in local artist Terri Kusugak and she did a great slide show on colonization and her experience with her own family's history with it. She also sang for the students.

"We broke the students into groups by Dec. 28 and they started learning a bit about the technique of singing, using proper strong structure and understanding about choruses, verses, melodies, bridges – all the different structures within a song – and gave them some good examples of songs that have been written over the years."

Gee said the students started brainstorming ideas about what they wanted to share with the world, the kind of things they wanted to include in their songs and what kind of message they wanted to send.

She said the Darkspark team members worked with each of the groups to come up with the structures for the songs they were going to record.

"It was kind of a process that started with the songwriting, then getting their beat and melody and then planning out each verse and the structure of the song to get how it was going to sound.

"I was careful to organize the groups so that each one had some leaders in it and well as some students who were, maybe, a little bit more shy, so each group was structured according to its strengths and weaknesses.

"So, there were definitely some kids who retreated a little bit, sat back and just wanted to do the rapping part of the song or the writing part.

"I did find, overall, that all of the kids contributed, just in different ways according to whatever their strengths were."

Gee said although the students are effectively guided every step of the way, every idea behind all of the songs produced in Rankin Inlet were those of each of the individual groups.

She said in the videos produced to accompany the songs, the students talk about how their dads, grandpas and uncles taught them about hunting and how they want to keep their moms' patterns for sewing.

"Those were all very true student experiences and the thoughts behind who they are, what being Inuit means to them and, also, what living in Rankin Inlet means to them because not all of the students in the groups were Inuit.

"There was a real effort in finding common ground and sharing in experiences."

Gee said most of the students were super excited to record.

She said the experience was unlike anything they'd ever done before, with an amazing recording studio set up in a dark room accented by Christmas lights that was very engaging for the students.

"The students definitely took away a really great experience that they'll probably remember for a very long time and that experience for most of them was the coming together of the different grades and even there being non-Inuit kids in the mix.

"They got to learn more about Inuit culture and what's important in their history through a lot of the sharing before the songwriting even started.

"It was a chance for them to find connections with each other and to remember that we're all human and, whatever our differences, there's always a way to connect.

"That would be the underlying takeaway for most of the students and they will remember that time in Grade 7 or Grade 8 with Darkspark when they got to feel unique and special." bf l A ᐅᖃᐅᓯᖃᕐᓂᖅ m4WZz 8

Rankin rec department goes all out to deliver good times for community

The 2018 edition of the Christmas Games holiday schedule was another popular success in Rankin Inlet.

The Christmas schedule ran from Dec. 22 to Jan. 1 and featured something for all ages. Events included a community feast, square-dance competition, elders' breakfast, numerous indoor games, talent show, a kid's carnival, dazzling fireworks display, the annual senior men's all-star hockey game and Kevin Fredlund Christmas Classic (Toronto vs.

Montreal) old-timers' game.

And, of course, a visit from Old Saint Nick himself.

Rankin recreation coordinator David Clark was in his 13th year organizing the holiday activities and he said the events have gotten bigger during the past decade. He said the recreation department learns from what it does each year, dropping activities that don't prove popular with the community and often tweaking those that are to make them even better the following year.

"We had really good turnouts for all the events this year," said Clark.

"The community hall was packed pretty much the whole time and we had lots of fun games that everyone really seemed to enjoy.

"Now that myself, Cody Tulugak and the guys over at our fire department are trained to put on a professional fireworks display, the fireworks show has become a really big complement to our holiday lineup and is something everyone looks forward to now to celebrate the new year."

Clark said the hamlet had a good number of volunteers to help out with all the holiday activities.

He said the community has a lot of people willing to help out with special events, so it's really a matter of having someone in charge of a certain event to ensure it runs well.

"I had extra help this year because I was able to hire a couple of extra staff members during the holidays and that helped with everything big time.

"So everything worked out quite well, actually.

"Among the favourite activities each year, the squaredance competition is always a huge hit and the indoor games at the community hall are always packed like crazy.

"The elders' breakfast is always very popular and the Toronto vs. Montreal oldtimers' game (Kevin Fredlund Christmas Classic) is another event that is hugely popular and packs the arena every year."

Clark said Wesley Innukshuk always does a great job hosting the games sponsored by the local Search and Rescue Committee, as well as the local radio station.

He said Innukshuk's contributions to the annual holiday activities are always greatly appreciated by the recreation department.

"Wesley is always a big help to me during the holidays.

"He's really pretty good at what he does and he always adds some pretty funny games at the community hall.

"Wesley really enjoys hosting those activities and he does a fantastic job every year, so a lot of people always thank him for doing it.

"Our bantam hockey team ran the kids' carnival, which was right before their tournament in Winnipeg, so that was a nice way to give back to the community and also show the players that when you suit up with the Rankin Rock you're expected to also help out with community events during the year."

Clark said while it's impossible to please everyone, the community seemed quite happy with this year's activities.

He said everyone – volunteers, a number of outside

organizations and the recreation department – chips in to ensure the annual Christmas events schedule is as good as it can possibly be.

"The hamlet pays out more than $30,000 during the 10 days we run the activities, so I don't know what else we can do other than simply doing our best for the community every year.

"Everyone's in their holiday mode and we're going to work every day and doing the best we can to make sure the events are happening and people are happy. So I would hope the

community appreciates our efforts.

"It's non-stop for my rec staff with the community hall, the lobby and the arena being used from morning to night and, although I know they're sometimes wishing they could spend more time at home with their families, my staff know working during the holidays is part of working in recreation and they always do a fantastic job.

"Now our biggest step is trying to get a bigger community hall so we can have room for everybody."

Passing grades, but capable of more Northern News Services

It was good this post holiday season to hear reports of a strong volunteer base getting involved with the various celebrations and activities in communities across the Kivalliq.

Ditto reports of members of the Canadian Rangers running holiday games and activities in their community and people like Wesley Innukshuk in Rankin Inlet continuing the tradition of running games sponsored by the Rankin Inlet Search and Rescue Committee and on behalf of local radio.

In an age when volunteerism has become a tough sell in many locales, the Kivalliq remains better off than many regions across our entire country.

Sanikiluaq However, as great as it is that volunteers are answering the call for holiday activities and other one-off special events, the region still needs to take another step forward and have more people stepping up to help ongoing programs – especially for youth – continue and progress.

If we want our youth getting involved with positive activities that help them mature and develop personally, foster skill development and learning, bestow upon them a sense of belonging and acceptance, lay the foundation for leadership abilities and, most importantly, provide them with a safe space where having fun and social interaction are the rules not the exceptions – then it is of paramount importance that our

Large crowds came out to see the JAHS Drama Club production of A Charlie Brown Christmas in Arviat this past month.

The cast and crew performed the play for all three schools in the community, as well as presenting two shows for the general public on Dec. 11 and Dec. 12.

Fireworks light up the community Explosive display becomes hot ticket in Rankin

Although the public didn't know it at the time, the community of Rankin Inlet began moving down the road to a fireworks display it could take great pride in when Rankin

Fire Chief Mark Wyatt was asked to handle the display on New Year's Eve two years ago.

As it turned out, Wyatt had an extensive history in producing professional-quality fireworks displays and decided it was time the community ungraded its ability to put on

a memorable event after struggling through the first New Year's Eve with family-type fireworks the hamlet had traditionally used for the show.

Wyatt said that first show didn't look horrible or anything of that nature but the fireworks on-hand were not

the quality you would use to put on a first-class fireworks show.

He said after getting through that first show, he vowed he would never use that quality of fireworks to put on a display again.

"I've been doing com-

mercial fireworks shows for years, so we decided to train some people in the fire department and a couple more in the recreation department to be able to assist in the delivery of a great show," said Wyatt.

"They all got certified and we've been ordering commercial fireworks ever since; doing a show this past New Year's Eve, then another one at Easter and then our third this New Year's Day. "The shows have stayed the same size in terms of the size of the mortars being used but we seem to be getting better with our presentation every time we do a show.

"The first show we lit all of the fireworks individually but then, this past April, I started teaching people how to tie them together so that we light one fuse and 10 of them will go off, sequenced in a row, so everything is timed a little better now and our most recent show went really, really well."

The current fireworks display cost a bit more than $4,000 to hold in Rankin Inlet.

Wyatt said the price tag is actually good value for the money.

He said there have been absolutely no safety concerns associated with the display since moving up to the commercial level.

"We take all the necessary precautions that we're supposed to.

"This year, we were sched-

uled to do the display on New Year's Eve again but our winds were a little more than 40 km/h, gusting to 60 km/h.

"Our threshold is 40 kilometres per hour but, with where we are in town, I don't think I would even do them at 40 km/h because when you send a shell 600 feet up into the air under those conditions, it's going to drift a lot.

"That's why we postponed them, because of the weather, and it was much safer on New Year's Day." Wyatt said from the feedback he's received, people in the community love the commercial display and now look forward to it.

He said everyone he talked to really thought this year's show was great.

"There were headlights all around the whole of Williamson Lake, which looked pretty impressive to me, but, in terms of how big the crowd actually was, I was too focused on the show itself and making sure the guys were safe with their lighting to really take notice.

"People have been pretty good every show, as far as any safety issues are concerned.

"We have one of our firefighters patrol the lake on a snowmobile and we stay down there from the time we start setting up to make sure everyone's safe.

"We work together with recreation for each of the shows and there is talk at this point of doing another show at Easter but nothing has been confirmed as of yet."

Rocking the Peg Rankin bantams take home gold from Challenge Cup

Kadin Eetuk's goal with less than a minute to play propelled the Rankin Rock to a 1-0 win over the Selkirk Fisherman and earned the Bantam A1 Division championship at the Winnipeg Jets Challenge Cup tournament in Winnipeg, Man., on Dec. 30.

Rankin's A1 Division featured Selkirk and eight teams from Winnipeg.

The Rock were in the middle bracket of the tournament, which also featured action in bantam AAA, AA, A2 and A3 divisions.

Rankin went 4-0 in round-robin play and defeated the same Selkirk team in their final round-robin game to secure first place.

The Rock then got past the Winnipeg Canucks 5-0 in the semifinal to set-up the championship tilt with the Fishermen.

Bubsy Kusugak accompanied the Rock and head coach David Clark to Winnipeg as an assistant coach for the first time.

Kusugak said the only other time he was behind the bench was when he was doing it for volunteer hours while he was still in high school.

He said Clark was in need of some help at the tournament and he decided to go along and help out where he could.

"It's a bit different perspective being behind the bench rather than out on the ice playing but not really all that much because hockey is hockey," said Kusugak.

"We were pretty confident about our chances with the teams in our pool, especially as the round robin went along, but I wasn't really sure of the caliber of play going on in the other pool.

"You're kept really busy at tournaments like this and it seems like you have to be at so many places at once that you can't possibly watch all the games.

"In the end it didn't matter because Selkirk eliminated the top team in the other pool and we ended up playing them again for the championship in a really rough game."

Kusugak said the Rock had beat Selkirk in the round robin and the team was confident going into the final.

He said even though the Fishermen had some really big players on defence, he was confident the Rock's smaller but faster players could get the job done.

"I had told Kadin (Eetuk) he burned this team in the round robin and he could do it again in the final because he could use his speed to beat those slow-moving defencemen and it worked out for us.

"After Kadin scored with 56 seconds left, I think it was, everyone was getting so pumped up on the bench, but it was stop time so you can't really take anything for granted.

"You don't want anybody ready to celebrate on the bench before that final buzzer goes, that's for sure, because you know how quickly things can turn around on you.

"Selkirk shot themselves in the foot by taking a penalty during that final minute and we just shut them down to take it."

Kusugak said you couldn't help but be excited on the bench during such an even game that was well into the third period and still tied at 0-0.

He said it was a lot of fun to be behind the bench, watching Clark work the team and lead it to victory.

"It was like being in a time machine and watching his dad (Donald Clark) coaching again," laughed Kusugak.

"David and I have played together since we

were younger than bantam age and we were mostly coached by Donald and Steve (Faulkner), so to hear Donald's words coming out of David's mouth was pretty awesome.

"I mean David's got his own personality and way of going about things but there's a lot of his dad's influence mixed-in there too.

"We had just about everyone on our side down there and you want to leave a good impression – a good taste in people's mouths – at these tournaments because often it's the first time people get exposed to people from Rankin or Nunavut, or Inuit in general for that matter, so why not try to leave a good impression."

Kusugak said the experience piqued his interest in possibly getting involved with coaching minor hockey.

He said he doesn't know what the future holds but, right now, he's thinking why not get more involved?

"The tournament was so much fun and the kids had so much fun, so that makes an impression on you for sure.

"These kids are starting to become young adults, so it's cool to see a little bit of maturation taking place and I'd like to see how far some of these kids go.

"I'm not too sure about getting more involved but I think I might.

"But, for now, this was a real rewarding experience and I didn't do a thing to earn it. I just helped the kids out and they took home the gold, so I'm very proud of them."
