The ninth annual Kivalliq Trade Show attracted its largest number of participants yet this past week in Rankin Inlet.

The event ran from Sept.

24 to 26 and featured a large gathering of presenters, an art market, fashion show, entrepreneur activities, a community talent spotlight and a gala supper, ceremony and dance to close things out for another year.

Kivalliq Inuit Association social development co-ordinator Sam Tutanuak has represented a number of organizations at the trade show over the years.

Tutanuak said the trade show puts a bright spotlight on the business and employment opportunities in the Kivalliq region.

He said the show also gathers the main players of the commercial world under one roof.

"Even after all these years, connections are still made and deals, official or unofficial, are still struck during the Kivalliq Trade Show," he said.

"It can seem like it's always the same group of people at the show, overall, but there's always someone new who comes in and forms a new relationship with someone at the event.

"The show also gives good exposure to the art world and, hopefully, some good sales for our region's seamstresses, carvers and whatnot.

"There are also monies raised for local charities or organizations through silent auctions and live auctions, so it's really a win-win for everyone involved."

Tutanuak still sees a bright future ahead for the Kivalliq Trade Show.

He said he sees the event continuing for many years to come.

"Rankin is still a growing community, as are most Kivalliq communities and we're just scratching the surface of our potential, so there will be plenty of good years to come."

David Fredlund, a member of the Kivalliq Trade Show Society, said this was definitely the biggest trade show yet.

He said the event plays an

important role in the region's overall economy, as more and more businesses get involved with each other at the show.

"There are more partnerships happening all the time and the show plays a large part in that and, in my opinion, is something that should continue as we move forward," said Fredlund.

"Artists and the art they produce is an industry unto itself and the trade show helps them bring in revenue for themselves, which definitely ties into the business aspect of things and it helps increase the visibility, or exposure, of artists in our community and those from across the region who come in for the show."

Fredlund said Rankin Inlet continues to grow, as does mining activity and exploration in the Kivalliq region, so there's no reason the trade show can't continue to grow right along with them.

"The logistics of the show are formidable," he said.

"To put on this kind of thing takes a lot of manpower, financial support from outside organizations and, of course, the support of the community itself."

Cigarette sparks house fire

One person was taken to the Kivalliq Health Centre with burns to the hands and face as a result of a house fire in Rankin Inlet on Sept. 26.

According to the Rankin Inlet Fire Department, the fire started in the porch when a lit cigarette fell into a container of flammable liquid. The public housing unit was severely damaged in the resulting fire.

Band on ice Naujaat Bandmates Mathew Thompson, Anthony Collens and William Palliser took their music around the community of Naujaat in a unique way this past spring.

The trio used a generator to power their equipment and were towed around the bay on a qamutiik in front of the community and then out to the site of the bowhead whale bones.

The group has a video on YouTube showing some of their unique rock-and-roll journey.

They also played a live concert for the community this past year.

Abluqta Society to hold AGM Baker Lake The Abluqta Society will be holding its annual general meeting on Monday, Oct. 15, beginning at 7 p.m. at the Thrift Shop (QDC 33).

Since becoming a registered society during the summer of 2017, the Abluqta Society opened a thrift shop in Baker Lake on May 11, which sells clothing and household items.

The society has also held several food bank events to collect donations for people in need, distributed donated mattresses from Agnico Eagle Mines and sought government funding to move away from financial reliance on bingo.

The Abluqta Society will be electing a new board at its AGM, including the positions of president, vice-president and treasurer.

Tuberculosis prevention screening clinic in Whale Cove Whale Cove A screening clinic for tuberculosis (TB) in Whale Cove will start at the end of October.

It will be the next community screened for the disease after a pilot screening wrapped up about six months ago in Qikiqtarjuaq.

Whale Cove was selected as the next community for the screening based on a variety of factors including community infrastructure, states a Government of Nunavut news release.

Screening will take place by household starting on Oct. 22. The clinic is expected to be operational for five to six weeks, states the release.

"We need to make bold decisions and explore new programs to eliminate TB in Nunavut," said Minister of Health George Hickes in the release. "Lessons learned from the TB clinic in Qikiqtarjuaq were incredibly valuable. As we move forward, this is just one of many ways that show the commitment of municipal, federal and Inuit organizations in achieving our collective goal."

Many people dream of one day having their passion in life turn into a profitable business for them and Joeffrey Kaludjak of Rankin Inlet is inching closer to that goal.

The hamlet's chief economic development officer by day, Kaludjak spends many of his evenings and weekends as a gunsmith looking after his new business, KAL-SHOT. Kaludjak, 42, said he officially opened the doors to his new business about two months ago.

He said he's fully-licensed federally as a gunsmith and has begun advertising his services, building rifles and providing maintenance, coating and painting for firearms.

"I've been into firearms my whole

life," said Kaludjak.

"I moved to Winnipeg for a job a while back and that company took me on and trained me to build custom longrange rifles.

"It's my passion, so it's naturally something I love doing."

Kaludjak said there are many guns in the Kivalliq region that are just simply shot out, meaning the barrel is worn out.

He said in those situations he tears the rifle apart, threads a new barrel on and chambers it to whatever caliber the customer wants.

Once he's done, he will also sight in the rifle and test it for accuracy if the customer so desires.

"It's been pretty steady work for me since I opened the doors," he said. "I have some orders on the go now and I'm trying to keep up as best I can. I'm a one-man show, but I'm doing my best to keep up."

Kaludjak also delivers the Canadian Firearm Safety program.

He said once enough people come to him wanting to acquire their firearm acquisition certificate, he'll hold a weekend training course for the group.

"I deliver both the non-restricted, which is the long gun, hunting rifle and the restricted class, which is handguns or any type of restricted firearm.

"My goal is that one day I'll be able to do this on a full-time basis.

"So, hopefully, one day I can leave my day job and do this 100 per cent of the time.

Kissarvik Co-op hosts supervisor training course in Rankin Inlet Two-day course helps supervisors understand their legal rights and responsibilities

Co-op supervisors from around Nunavut were in Rankin Inlet for a supervisor familiarization course this past week.

The two-day course ran on Sept.

27 and 28 and was facilitated by Wes Mazur of Ontario's Grand River Occupational Health and Safety (OHS).

Mazur, a former Workers' Safety and Compensation Commission (WSCC) safety officer who started his own company nine years ago, said the Co-op partnered with Grand River OHS to provide mandatory supervisor training for every Co-op in the North.

He said the participants learned about the Safety Act and Regulations for Nunavut, hazard and risk assessment, supervisor leadership, how to manage contractors and workers rights and responsibilities.

"The supervisor familiarization training is a two-day comprehensive course approved by the WSCC," said Mazur.

"It helps supervisors understand their legal rights and responsibilities under the Nunavut Safety Act and Regulations.

"We had 13 people take the program in Rankin."

Kissarvik retail store manager Glenn Woodward said he took a lot of information away from the course.

He said all the Co-op supervisors who attended left understanding a lot more about their rights and responsibilities than when they arrived.

"The course was eye-opening, informative and enlightening," said Woodford.

"All the participants were engaged in conversations and we participated in some excellent breakout exercises together, so I believe the course was beneficial to everyone sitting at the table.

"Prior to this course taking place, Kissarvik Co-op advertised at the

local level that it was coming up and invited employers of Rankin Inlet to attend the course and we only had one external organization take advantage of the opportunity."

Matt Clark, Arctic Co-operatives regional manager in Iqaluit, said it's important for the company to deliver this course and have it done well, because it's now the law in Nunavut.

He said even more importantly, the safety of Arctic Co-operatives

employees and their customers is of critical importance.

"Anything that can broaden the understanding of our managers and our supervisors in ensuring safe workplaces and safe stores and operations is critical for our future success," said Clark.

Mazur said one of his goals since leaving the North was to be able to come back and offer good healthand-safety training and services at

southern pricing.

"We're doing that now with our partnership with Arctic Co-operatives and not offloading higher costs on the people of the North," said Mazur.

"People have taken advantage of that in the past and that's part of the reason why I started this company so I could be fair and provide good training to folks, especially those in the North."

Trade show still has vital role Northern News Services

One thing you can take to the bank: anytime a trade show hits a community, there is no shortage of folks who sing its praises and no shortage of folks who think it's a waste of time and money for the same old people and companies doing the same old thing.

The biggest difference between the two groups is that those who see value in the trade show are willing to have their thoughts made public, while those who question its value, well, not so much.

The one thing that really can't be disputed is that an event now the size of the Kivalliq Trade Show – which will celebrate its tenth anniversary in 2019 – brings plenty of revenue into the community's hospitality industry when it hits town.

6 to 10.

The annual event is one of the main activities of the Kivalliq Science Educators Community.

Cadet program lives another year Capt. Erin McKinlay becomes acting CO of 3055 RCACC in Naujaat

The 3055 Royal Canadian Army Cadet Corps (RCACC) Naujaat has been given an eleventh-hour reprieve and will continue to function for at least another year.

Capt. Erin McKinlay flew to Naujaat from Winnipeg this past month to work with local people and hamlet staff to revive the corps, which was left without an officer when former commanding officer (CO) Capt. Lloyd Francis left Naujaat to further his teaching career.

McKinlay said a number of options were discussed while trying to devise a plan to save the 3055 RCACC. She said her visits to Naujaat have shown her that the hamlet and community members want the cadet program to continue.

"My job is being the zone training officer, so I go around to and look after 19 units as my full-time job," said McKinlay.

"The corps in Naujaat is one of my units, so I had suggested that I take it over for one year to see if we can find enough local people to get involved and keep the corps sustainable for the future.

"So that's the goal for the next year, for me to be the corps CO and co-ordinate everything from Winnipeg, with a number of trips to Naujaat.

"We have hopes of getting enough local support that we can keep the program going after this one-year term."

McKinlay said the 3055 has two civilian instructors (CI) from the previous year, but both are very busy at this time.

She said one just welcomed a new baby into the home while the other just started a new job.

"I was really working in Naujaat for a week this past month to get some new staff involved and an RCMP officer has offered to come on as a CI and help out when he can, but RCMP officers can be called out at any given time, so he can't be completely reliable.

"Two other locals have come forward and have put in paperwork to become a CI – one is Romeo Kopak and the other is James Jr. Kopak.

"Jr. was a CI with the corps a couple of years ago and Romeo's son, Jack, is in the corps and is a very successful cadet.

"I'm very excited about both of them coming on board because it's really nice for the kids to have them around."

To date the 3055 RCACC has 26 returning cadets for the current cadet season and 12 new ones registered for the program during McKinlay's stay in Naujaat.

"That's encouraging, so now it's a matter of getting the corps up and running and see who can and who wants to, become an officer and if we can continue to get some more

"So, there's reason to be optimistic about the corps right now. I will be travelling to Naujaat again in November so I can be there for their Remembrance Day service."
