Camp makes second stop Arviat The Rankin Rock Season Opener hockey camp made its second road trip of the year when it skated into Arviat Dec. 7 to 9.

The skills-development camp has been able to visit communities outside of Rankin Inlet thanks to the Arctic Inspiration Prize it was awarded earlier this year.

Peaceful end Baker Lake Members of the Baker Lake detachment of the RCMP engaged in a critical incident which occurred in a residence during the early morning hours of Dec. 7.

The Baker Lake RCMP, along with the RCMP’s Critical Incident Team, worked with a male who had barricaded himself in his residence with a firearm.

Shortly after 2 p.m., the man was taken into custody.

The RCMP have ensured the citizens of Baker Lake that despite the rumours, there were no hostages taken, nor was the public in danger during the incident.

“We would like to thank the citizens of Baker Lake for their patience as we peacefully resolved this potentially volatile situation,” stated Staff Sgt. Stephen Bergerman, district commander for the Kivalliq region in a news release.

Funding announced Arviat Arviat is one of five Nunavut communities receiving funding from Transport Canada to help the Government of Nunavut construct mooring bollards in each community.

Each of the five communities – Arviat, Gjoa Haven, Pangnirtung, Sanikiluaq and Taloyoak – will receive two 70-tonne mooring bollards.

Potential projects that could develop from the comprehensive community scoping study include creation or expansion of breakwaters, dedicated laydown areas, ramps, secure fencing and lighting, dedicated small craft launching and unloading zones and road access.

The federal government is providing a grand total of $2,545,200 in funding to help construct the mooring bollards.

Federal Minister of Transport Marc Garneau stated in a news release that Northern communities rely on marine resupply operations to receive up to 95 per cent of their goods.

“The Government of Canada is protecting the health of our Arctic coast,” Garneau stated.

Herd in danger Kivalliq The Beverly and Qamanirjuaq Caribou Management Board (BQCMB) wrapped up its 86th meeting in Winnipeg, Man., from Nov. 20 to 22 with a dire message – the Beverly caribou herd is highly vulnerable and more needs to be done to address the pressures the herd is facing.

The message resulted from the board’s vulnerability assessment for the herd, which was conducted in November 2017 through a process set out in its management plan for 20132022.

Using both traditional knowledge and scientific information, board members looked at 20 indicators of herd vulnerability for Beverly caribou, rating them from very low to very high and used the results to identify a preliminary overall vulnerability level for the herd.

Hometown hero Rankin youth becomes first Inuk pilot to fly for Calm Air

Jeremy Maley is modestly settling into being a role model and hometown hero of sorts since becoming a pilot and first officer for Calm Air this past month.

Maley, 21, of Rankin Inlet fell in love with flying at an early age thanks to his pilot father, Shawn Maley, who took him up into the skies for numerous flights in his float plane.

It was around the age of 14 the younger Maley decided he wanted to be a commercial pilot and make his living flying the Northern skies.

He said he obtained his private licence by the age of 18 and was off to college and flight school to obtain his commercial licence.

He said he didn’t think much about where he’d be flying once his training was done and it was a pleasant surprise to find himself based in Rankin Inlet and flying with Calm Air. “I wasn’t sure where I wanted to go at first, and my plans kind of changed once or twice, but I saw Calm Air as always being an option and I now have a pretty good foot in the door there,” he said. “It’s been great so far, so I can’t complain.”

Jeremy has started his professional career flying ATRs for Calm Air, becoming the first Inuk pilot to fly for the airline. He said he likes that every day is a little different and comes with its own challenges and rewards.

“It’s been adventure for me so far, that’s for sure.”

Maley said he’s pretty content to be in Rankin Inlet right now and he hopes to stay for at least the next few years.

Maley took it all in stride, although he does admit to being a little surprised and overwhelmed by the number of people who asked him for a photo.

Being Rankin Inlet raised with an Inuk mother, Chantal Taylor, Maley is living proof your dreams can be realized if you’re willing to put in the work to obtain them.

He said it’s a bit different being looked to as a role model, but he’s gradually warming up to the idea.

Maley said he loves to fly and he really can’t picture himself doing any other job.

He said flying doesn’t feel like a job to him at all.

“I really enjoy the approaching-therunway part of it and the landings,” he said. “And the views you see from the front when in the air are absolutely stunning.”

Victor Sammurtok School developing next wave of science fair lovers

The innovators and discoverers of tomorrow took centre stage in Chesterfield Inlet when Victor Sammurtok School (VSS) hosted its Elementary Science Fair on Dec. 4.

Local fairs in schools across the region led up to the Kivalliq Science Educators’ Community’s (KSEC) Kivalliq Regional Science Fair, where students were vying for the right to represent the Kivalliq at the national Canada-Wide Science Fair.

The 2019 regional science fair will be held at Qitiqliq Middle School in Arviat from March 15 to 17.

KSEC president Rob Humby of Chesterfield Inlet is enjoying overseeing his fourth science fair at VSS this year.

Humby said the coolest thing about the annual science fair is that there’s always different projects to see and there’s always a really nice variety of work entered from the students in kindergarten all the way up to Grade 8.

He said year in and year out, there’s always something new and fresh about the event, and that says a lot about the school and its students.

“Our students have some great ideas and it’s amazing to see them be able to organize those ideas into a project in the science fair,” said Humby.

“Our school, as a whole, takes the annual science fair very seriously and we’re quite proud of our results over the years.

“The students, and even our staff, realize that the school science fair is an opportunity – where students feel motivated and want to learn about the questions that often pop up in their mind on a daily basis,” he said. “The positive feedback and successful students over the years at the VSS Science Fair and the Kivalliq Regional Science Fair keeps our students motivated to do even better and come up with a better project next year.”

Humby said there were 23 projects entered into this year’s elementary science fair, which made it really interesting.

He said there are usually three types of science fair projects – the experiments, the research projects and innovation, which is inventing something new.

“We had a wide range of projects from our younger students this year in all three types of projects, including a couple of innovations, which is really nice to see,” Humby said. “Really that’s what stands out from the rest for me, when there’s innovation involved.”

Humby said the senior high science fair will be held sometime in February while the group prepares for the regional fair.

“The science fair is a big deal to our school and our students and I’m grateful to have the amount of support we do from the students, the staff and the community members, because without any of them this just wouldn’t be possible.”

Ready to rumble for science Northern News Services

Call it what you will, but I always find it downright exhilarating to talk with any of the teachers or students at Victor Sammurtok School (VSS) in Chesterfield Inlet about the science fair at their school and, of course, the Kivalliq Regional Science Fair.

I find it totally uplifting that the students of this little school, in a tiny Kivalliq community, have, for all intents and purposes, made the science fair their school rallying cry and, year after year, the VSS students come to the regional science fair totally ready to rumble – scientifically speaking, of course.

And, as much as the other students at the regional competition are often friends from the science fair or the science cultural camp from the previous year (the two flagship projects of the Kivalliq Science Educators’ Community) – the qualifying students from VSS come to the Kivalliq Regional Science Fair ready to kick some scientific butt – be that friend or foe – and punch their ticket to represent our region at the national Canadawide Science Fair competition.

Dear editor, It was recently brought to my attention that the liquor cargo shipment had priority over my family’s personal food shipment with Calm Air. As it was, there was a delay in all cargo arrivals here in Rankin Inlet that particular week which, in effect, caused my food mail to take more than a week to finally get here.

That was borderline unacceptable, but what made the whole thing very unacceptable was the liquor arriving here two full days before food shipments were brought up.

Many of us know and understand that liquor has an almost limitless shelf life, and very little to no nutritional value.

On the flip side, people who order food from Winnipeg are, most often, getting fresh fruits and vegetables, meats and dairy that will benefit children and families in our community every time.

Good food to feed our families should have priority over liquor shipments that never benefit families in our community every time.

I addressed a copy of this letter – which I sent to Calm Air – to our local newspaper in hopes this situation will be explored, and those in our community who feel the same way will step forward and voice their thoughts.

A true school benefactor, Carveth’s latest gift to the students at VSS was to pay for a healthy, and extremely tasty, meal that was known in the school as Uncle Bob’s Breakfast this past month on the morning of Nov. 19.

Youth Parliament proves to be rewarding experience for Arviat student

The youth parliament held this past month in Iqaluit made a definite impression on at least one of the two students selected to represent Arviat.

Grade 11 student Lydia Kaviok, 16, was selected along with fellow student Leo Tatty to make the journey to Iqaluit to participate in the youth parliament, and Kaviok said she learned a lot and enjoyed the experience immensely.

She said she was surprised, excited and just a little nervous when she learned she had been selected to participate.

“There were about 23 youths, I believe, from across Nunavut at the youth parliament in Iqaluit,” said Kaviok.

“From my personal perspective, I learned a lot about how the legislative assembly of Nunavut is supposed to run and how the government has so many different types of problems it’s trying to solve.”

“The two problems, or topics, that really caught my attention were the lack of proper teaching of Inuktitut in so many Nunavut schools and the problem of suicide, including one that happened recently in one Kivalliq community but I’m not totally sure which one,” she said. “Some topics are real triggers for people who experienced it or witnessed it and I don’t think it’s reasonable for people to expect our government to come up with all the answers to all the different types of problems we face.”

Kaviok said she also really enjoyed pretending to be Arviat North – Whale Cove MLA John Main.

She said she played the role of John Main for the entire youth parliament.

“I didn’t fire any premiers while I was there, but I was really busy during my time in Iqaluit,” she said.

“I think John Main is doing a really great job at his work and while I was John Main I talked about the polar bear problem in Arviat, but I didn’t get to vote because

there was a lack of the time needed.”

Kaviok said going to the youth parliament was a rewarding experience for her.

She said she would definitely recommend the experience to any youth in Nunavut who had the opportunity to participate.

“I just learned an awful lot about a lot of different things while I was in Iqaluit and I totally enjoyed it all,” she said.

“Being there also gave me some different things to think about while I’m finishing high school and I kind of feel like I can look at some issues or topics through different perspectives now, too.”

Gord Billard has Kaviok in his drama club at John Arnalukjuak High School in Arviat and he said he was happy to see her selected to participate because he loves the idea of the youth parliament.

He said he was a member of the youth parliament held when he was in high school.

“It was the first time that we’d ever had it in our school back in Newfoundland and I remember I was an Assembly Sergeant at Arms at one point,” laughed Billard.

“I had always been aware of elections in my community as a young person, but it wasn’t until we actually set up that youth parliament that I realized the inner workings of government and how it all operates.”

Billard said there can never be anything wrong with learning how government works.

He said, in his opinion, it’s something that’s very important to learn about and understand.

“There’s also a chance that for some of these kids it might be the first steps into an interest in politics that might, one day, lead them to government,” he added.

“It all begins at these seminal little moments in people’s lives when they make decisions that last their lifetime.

Someone like Lydia (Kaviok), I wouldn’t be the least bit surprised if she did end up in government some day as a result of this experience.”

Fire strikes four-plex in Rankin Quick response by firefighters contains fire to one unit

The quick action of the community’s firefighters prevented what could have been a major blaze in Rankin Inlet on Dec. 6.

Rankin Fire Chief Mark Wyatt said the call came in at 8:45 p.m. that a fire had started in the middle unit of a four-plex in Rankin’s Area Five.

He said the caller was fairly panicked and said the place was on fire, burning quickly, come right away.

“The fire was started by a three-year-old kid playing with a lighter on a bed in the back bedroom,” said Wyatt.

“There was heavy smoke coming out of the back and windows had broken when we arrived on scene,” he said. “The guys went inside, but it took them a while to find the fire because there was a lot of smoke in the unit and the fire was in the back.”

“We managed to keep the fire confined to that one suite and got it all put out with no damage to any of the other units.”

Wyatt said the burned unit is definitely salvageable, but some of the drywall will have to be torn out and the whole unit will have to be

repainted.

He said 13 members of the fire department, including himself, responded to the call.

“I was first to arrive onscene at 8:48 p.m. and by the time we were back at the fire hall and cleared up, it was about 11:30 p.m.,” he said.

Wyatt said he worries that confusion over the proper address of a building on fire might cost someone their life.

He said often people will call in and give them the housing number, but the housing numbers make absolutely no sense in the community in terms of where things are located.

“The caller will know their house number, but they won’t know the address, and a caller not being able to quickly tell us where the fire is located could be the difference between life and death.

“That’s especially true for a fire in a four-plex because it doesn’t take too long for it to start burning through to the next units, so, instead of having interior damage to one unit we end up losing the whole building and that’s not something I want to see.

“It happened once here in our community, and I don’t want to see it happen again.”
