Championship series Rankin Inlet Teams KIA and A&K clash tonight in game two of the best-of-five series to determine the champion of the Rankin Inlet Senior Men's Hockey League for the 2018-2019 season.

Game time is set for 8 p.m. at the Rankin Inlet arena.

KIA nipped A&K 7-5 to take game one in the series.

Elder's tea Rankin Inlet Elders in Rankin Inlet are reminded that the hamlet is hosting an Elder's Tea, for those aged 60 years and older, with snacks, games and loads of fun at the Rankin Drop-In Centre on Thursday, Feb. 28.

The fun gets underway at 10 a.m. and continues until noon.

Rankin Inlet Hockey fans across the Kivalliq are reminded of the giant raffle being held in support of the upcoming Terence Tootoo Memorial senior men's hockey tournament in Rankin Inlet from March 6 to 10.

Top prize in this year's raffle is a 2018 XF 600 Crosstrek ES Arctic Cat and a 16-foot homemade qamutiq.

There are also three pairs of tickets to Winnipeg and return courtesy of Calm Air to be won, along with two other major prizes.

The 12 potential graduates at Jonah Amitnaaq Secondary School are well on their way with fundraising efforts for their graduation in Baker Lake.

The group is being helped along by teacher Olivia Ullyot who said, to date, the Grade 12 students are doing an exceptional job.

Ullyot said it’s often a year-long task to raise enough money for the grad fund.

She said the group needs to raise about $6,000 to cover the celebration weekend, which includes the dinner, prom and decoration costs.

“Our grads come up with all the fundraising ideas themselves,” said Ullyot.

“We hold a meeting every month to plan our monthly fundraiser and they pretty much take it from there.”

Student Carla Kaayak, 18, said they held ticket draws in December and were selling cookies during the talent show.

She said they also held a catered dinner, which was a big success.

“So far I’ve taken part in all the fundraising activities and I’ve enjoyed it,” said

Kaayak.

“It’s something I have to do, but it’s still been fun and I like taking part.

We’ve been fundraising pretty fast and we’re almost at our target goal now.

“We’re going to keep going and try to raise a bit more so we can have grad pictures and grad rings.”

Ullyot said the group needing the catered dinner actually sought out the potential grads and they did a great job in making the most of the opportunity.

She said the local housing authority approached the students and asked them to host its annual catered Christmas dinner.

“The grads came out in full force and prepared a turkey-and-ham dinner with the works, set up the gym and fed 62 people for dinner that night,” said Ullyot.

“They did a complete and wonderful job.”

The students can continue to fundraise until the teachers leave for summer holidays.

Ullyot said every potential grad is encouraged to take part in at least one fundraising event.

She said, so far, they haven’t encoun-

tered any “slackers,” everyone’s pitchingin and doing their share and, as of Feb. 15, they were only $1,200 away from the $6,000 mark.

“This year’s group of potential grads is really strong and, for the most part, they’re good attenders with a good focus, so I think we will see a lot of these students, if not all, make it across the stage.

“Our school doesn’t do Bingo to fundraise for the grads, so they all get to participate in everything they do and they all have a say in the planning.

“Moving forward, the grads are looking to run a canteen over a weekend, although nothing has been confirmed yet, and they’re also going to be planning a Family Fun Day for later on in the spring.

“I’m quite happy with the job they’ve done so far, as they’re really a fun group to work with, they do most of the planning and work, and I just have to be there to make sure it all gets off the ground and everything runs smoothly.” bf l A ᑮᓇᐅᔾᔭᒃᓴᖅᑐᑦ m4WZz 6

Arviat

One man is dead and another is in custody following Arviat's first homicide in more than a decade.

Police say Manasie Thompson, 29, was found dead on Tuesday, Feb. 19.

Albert Napayok, 30, faces murder charges.

Arviat Mayor Bob Leonard said the mood in the community has been pretty somber in the days following the death.

Few people expect anything like this to happen in such a close-knit community, he said.

“We don’t have this kind of thing happen very often, so it's a shock,” said

“We really don’t have the whole story yet on exactly what happened, so everybody’s waiting to hear what the final version of events actually is.”

Further information from the RCMP was not available as of press time.

Leonard said he hadn’t heard anything concerning outside support for the community, such as grief counsellors.

He said an RCMP officer from Calgary arrived in the community late Feb. 20 to help out with the investigation being conducted by the Nunavut Major Crime Unit.

“We work hard to try and have a community where everybody gets along and respects each other.

“We work on that kind of thing all the time.

“In a situation like this, there’s a whole lot of hugging and holding going on in the community and I don’t know what else we (hamlet council) could do to help ease the shock and pain of it all.”

Leonard said there’s been little discussion going on in the community concerning Thompson’s death.

He said that’s fairly common for Arviat.

“People are being respectful and giving the families involved a chance to come to grips with the situation.”

I've been acutely aware of the fundraising efforts going on across the Kivalliq region during the past six months, especially in Rankin Inlet.

And, while I tip my hat to Jonah Amitnaaq Secondary School in Baker Lake for not allowing its potential grads to use Bingo as a fundraiser, the fundraising in Rankin has reached the point where it would be impossible for the majority of teams, student groups, etc., to reach their goals without it.

The fact of the matter is, the good folks in Rankin Inlet go above and beyond what anyone could reasonably expect from a community of its size when it comes to fundraising.

While it's been that way for quite some time, with the emergence of our youth and various senior hockey, softball and soccer teams on the regional and national stage, Sanikiluaq it's reached the point where there is scarcely a week that goes past without tickets being sold at our retail outlets, or fundraising activities being held at the arena and/or community hall.

You have to give credit to the various youth, students, team players, and their coaches and parents who are out-and-about constantly selling raffle tickets, holding penny sales and bake sales, and volunteering their time to run Bingo games and other

The Grizzlies movie comes to Arviat Local actor gets plenty of screen time in uplifting feature film

It was an emotional evening in Arviat when the community hosted a screening of The Grizzlies at the Mark Kalluak Community Hall.

Innosar Issakiark was seen a number of times in the movie – a true story based on a teacher’s efforts to improve life for youth in Kugluktuk through the sport of lacrosse – and he was thrilled to be seeing the screening in his home community on Wednesday, Feb. 20.

Issakiark, 23, said he was just being himself during his screen shots in the film.

He said word did get out on the movie set about his guitar-playing skills, so he’s getting to be known as simply the guitar guy.

“Watching the film again brought back a lot of memories,” said Issakiark.

“Most of the time I was trying to remember how it was when we were actually shooting the scenes I was seeing right in front of me.

“I was pretty nervous and excited about the screening in Arviat.

“But a lot of people came to watch it, so that made me very happy as well.”

Issakiark said it can be a very strange feeling, sitting there and watching yourself on the big movie screen.

He said he’s not used to seeing himself like that, but he has to admit, it felt pretty awesome.

“It’s a wonderful movie based on

a true story, and it’s not just about the teacher, but, rather, everyone who’s involved.

“It’s a really touching movie – a very powerful movie – that’s quite inspirational, so I really can’t describe in words on just how good of a movie it really is.

“There were quite a few tears in the community hall during the screening.

“I sat next to Gord Billard and he cried every 10 minutes, as did my mom and little sister – almost everybody cried at least once during the movie, including me.”

Issakiark said he has no immediate plans to return to the silver screen.

He said he’s been asked to audition for a few more roles, but he’s decided to concentrate on finishing all his schooling and getting a steady job first.

“I want to be financially stable before I try anything else right now.

“I’m working as a housing maintainer with our local housing authority in Arviat right now, so I’m just going to take my time and see how things go for now.”

Billard said in his opinion, The Grizzlies is nothing short of a fabulous movie.

He describes the film as a masterpiece of Northern storytelling.

“The film hit all the right notes, pushed all the right buttons, and spanned the whole spectrum of feelings and emotions that affect people’s lives up here,” said Billard.

“It was real – a true depiction of life in many of the communities up here and the difficulties that they all share.

“But, despite all that, there were comedic moments that kept it light and it was full of messages of hope, perseverance, resilience, determination, and the importance of never giving up and having family and

friend networks to help get you through difficult times.”

Billard said he had a lump in his throat every time Issakiark appeared on the screen.

He said while he didn’t have any major lines, Issakiark did have a lot of screen time in the film.

“His smiling face and his troubled face were both on the screen quite a bit.

“He’s a budding guitarist, and there’s one scene where his guitar

playing is highlighted following a series of suicides and tragic events that besieged the characters.

“So that scene really gave him his moment in the sun and that was another very cool moment in the film.

“I strongly recommend this film to everyone, as, above everything else, it leaves you feeling full of hope and there’s, arguably, nothing more important than that in regards to many lives being lived up here.”

One last shot at junior championship Coach Donald Clark eyes one final trip East before leaving junior 'C' program behind

Once again, the Rankin Rock faced defeat in the big game after an impressive tournament run, as the Baffin Blizzard held on for a 4-3 victory to claim the 2019 Polar Bear Plate juvenile-junior tournament in Rankin Inlet on Feb. 17.

It was a particularly tough loss for head coach Donald Clark, who is stepping away from the junior ‘C’ program after he takes Nunavut’s team to the Maritime-Hockey North Junior ‘C’ Championship one final time this coming March 27 to 31 at the Ayr Motor Centre in Woodstock, N.B. Clark said he liked the level of goaltending he saw across the board at the Plate, and he was impressed with a young Whale Cove squad taking bronze at the event.

He said he felt early in the tournament the final would come down to the Rankin Rock and Baffin Blizzard teams.

“The difference in the final game was that the Baffin finished when they got their chances and we didn’t,” said Clark.

“It was 4-2 going into the third period and we made it 4-3 on a penalty shot to get close, but we took three or four penalties in the third period and, when you’re trying to play catch up, you can’t be taking penalties like that.

“That’s especially true when it’s three-minute penalties in run time, and it’s hard to go on the offensive when you’re shorthanded so much.

“I found the two teams were very evenly matched. We made a few mistakes that ended up in our net and that was that.”

Turning his attention to the junior ‘C’ program, Clark said the lack of funding to support the program was the main reason for his decision to skate away following this season.

He said there was no funding made available for the Challenge Cup this year, which means a new direction will have to be taken to send a Nunavut team to the

Maritime-Hockey North Junior ‘C’ Championship.

“I’m a little frustrated over the fact there’s no funding from Hockey Nunavut for the junior ‘C’ program this year after we built it up to be such a worthwhile program.

“We are getting $7,500 in funding from our branch, Hockey North, to help with travelling to New Brunswick.

“So, to the best of my knowledge, there was no funding given to the Polar Bear Plate, and I know for a fact there was none given to the junior ‘C’ program by Hockey Nunavut.

“So, it’s a good time for me to walk away now.”

Clark said what may happen, moving forward, is that the Polar Bear Plate will become the evaluation camp for the team that travels to the Maritimes.

He said he and Baffin coach Todd Gardner made a gentlemen’s agreement that Kivalliq would go this year and Baffin would go the following year “There’s no restriction on the number of players you can pick from any region, so if I wanted to go to Woodstock with 20 kids just from the Kivalliq, that would be our choice.

“Next year will be the Baffin’s turn to represent the branch in the Maritimes and it will be their choice on how they go about it and what players they select for the team.

“I don’t see the Challenge Cup coming back into play unless Hockey Nunavut agrees to finance it or, at least, a portion of it.”

Clark said it’s a little ironic that the only reason the Kivalliq is going to the junior ‘C’ championship this year is because they lost the past couple of Challenge Cups against the Baffin.

He said that left the team with money in the bank to help towards making the trip to the Maritimes this year.

“Baffin has gone the past two years, so they’re, pretty much, flat broke right now, so for them to raise $50,000 or more over the next month would be a bit of a stretch.

“So doing it this way would mean a two-year rotation for each team to go, which would provide a little longer time for fundraising too.

“It’s not ideal – you’d much rather go as the winning team – but if you have to spend $25,000 to fly to Iqaluit, or for them to come to Rankin, for a three-game tournament (Challenge Cup), and then raise another $60,000 or so to go to the Maritimes, that’s a tough order here now with all the other groups fundraising, as well.

“I just don’t have the energy for that anymore, so it’s a good time for me to leave it behind.”
