Jordin Tootoo, the first Inuk NHLer, goes back to Brandon to announce his retirement

The Tootoo Train has stopped at an NHL station for the final time.

Jordin Tootoo of Rankin Inlet announced his retirement in Brandon, Man., on Oct. 19.

Tootoo was in Brandon to attended the Wheat Kings game that evening, ending his major junior and professional hockey career in the same community he launched it.

The Wheat Kings honoured Tootoo for his contributions and accomplishments at the Oct. 19 game.

Drafted 98th overall by the Nashville Predators in the fourth round of the 2001 NHL entry draft, Tootoo, 35, played 723 games in the world's top league, amassing 65 goals, 96 assists, 161 points and 1,010 penalty minutes during a 13-year career that also saw stops in Detroit, New Jersey and Chicago.

In making his retirement announcement in Brandon, Tootoo said it was a very special day for him and his family.

Coming full circle He said it's always special coming back to Brandon and it all feels like it's come full circle for him.

"I came to Brandon all those years ago and I didn't think much of becoming a role model other than what am I going to do to get to the NHL?" said Tootoo.

"This community has embraced me and looked beyond Jordin Tootoo the hockey player.

"They didn't judge me for how I played the game.

"And thank you to the city of Brandon who embraced my brother (Terence) and I." Tootoo thanked the NHL teams whose jerseys he's worn and said it was difficult to describe his emotions as he looked back.

He said the camaraderie with the players and the connection with the fans at the NHL level is something you have to experience to believe.

"It has enriched my life beyond words.

"You have helped me see the real meaning of life and you are my life."

Tootoo told the gathering on-hand for his announcement that he was retiring with no regrets.

Plans to work with Indigenous youth He said it's been a great run and now it's time for him to move on to the next chapter of his life.

"I know I will always remain close to my Native roots and will continue to work to enhance life for Native children who are suffering.

"I am deeply concerned about

some of the challenges facing our Indigenous communities, especially teen suicide and untreated mentalhealth challenges.

"I want to work with communities to create awareness around mental health and to support suicide-prevention initiatives.

"This is a national problem. I want to speak with corporate Canada about creating a culture of inspired inclusivity.

"It is important today for companies to build better teams where everyone feels welcome and is accepted."

Tootoo said he leaves the game at peace with himself, with the love

of his family and memories that will last a lifetime.

'A hell of a run' He said he owes his life to the game of hockey.

"The city of Nashville embraced me when I arrived as a youngster grieving the loss of his big brother, Terence – it was David Poile (GM) and Barry Trotz (coach) who helped me realize I needed help with my alcoholism, Ken Holland (Detroit GM) who believed in me when I was early in my recovery, Lou Lamoriello (New Jersey GM) who brought me in and trusted me when it looked like my legs were slowing down and

Stan Bowman (Chicago GM) who showed nothing but class during my final year.

"To my parents (Rose and Barney) and my sister, Corrine, you gave me all that you had to give and I cherish you.

"And to the people of Rankin Inlet... my brother Terence was my inspiration, both in life and in the afterlife. His final words to me were, ‘Jor, go all the way. Take care of the family. You are the man.'

"I can only hope I lived up to your expectations and after 13 years it's time for me to retire from the NHL. "It's been a hell of a run."

Pulling the ace Rankin Inlet Christal Kabluitok beat the odds in a big way when she pulled the Ace of Spades in the Chase the Ace draw at the Rankin Inlet arena this past Friday, Oct. 19.

There were still 29 cards left in the deck when Kabluitok nailed the Ace of Spades, which had her taking home a cool $18,858.

This marked the second go-around for Chase the Ace in Rankin.

No word, as of press time, if another chapter of the popular Chase the Ace fundraiser for the Rankin Inlet Fire Department and ambulance crew will be launched in the immediate future.

Movie screening Nunavut Director Zacharias Kunuk's latest project, Kivitoo: What they thought of us?, premiered at the 2018 ImagineNATIVE Film and Media Festival on October 21.

Kunuk attended the screening, which was announced by Isuma Distribution International this past Tuesday, Oct. 16.

Created as part of the Hunting with My Ancestors TV series, Kivitoo: What they thought of us? documents the 1963 forced relocation of the Inuit community of Kivitoo by the RCMP. The RCMP promised that the community would be allowed to return to Kivitoo and that the forced relocation was only a temporary measure.

When the community was finally able to return they found that their homes and all of their possessions had been burned and bulldozed.

The award-winning Kunuk visited the old settlement of Kivitoo with the last members of the camp, giving them an opportunity to have their heartbreaking story finally heard – a story of involuntary displacement that is all too common for Inuit across the Arctic.

Curling AGM Rankin Inlet The Qavik Curling Club will be holding its annual general meeting this coming Saturday, Oct. 27, in the curling lounge of the Rankin Inlet arena.

The meeting gets underway at 11 a.m.

All past members, or parents of members, are requested to attend and all interested curlers and community members are welcomed.

The executive positions of president, vice-president, treasurer and secretary are up for nominations at the meeting.

Baker Lake thrift shop now staffed by volunteers Community members step up to run business after store manager let go

After store manager Sharon Alerk was let go from her job, the Abluqta Society in Baker Lake decided their recently opened thrift shop would be run by volunteers.

Many community members stepped forward to join the society and help run the shop at an emergency meeting in Baker Lake on Oct. 17.

"I was very relieved to see a lot of people come forward wanting to become society members and volunteer at the thrift store," said the organization's president Joseph Arnasungaaq. "I was overwhelmed, excited and happy that the store is going to keep running."

Arnasungaaq said he was nervous before attending the emergency meeting.

He said he honestly wasn't sure if enough volunteers would come forward to run the shop but he was pleasantly surprised.

"I said a small prayer, alone, before heading down to the store for the meeting," he said.

Arnasungaaq said the society now has eight new members and a number of others who will volunteer their time at the thrift store.

The Abluqta Society was founded two years ago with hopes of providing essential goods and services to the people of Baker Lake.

To that end, the society opened a thrift shop in the community this past May 11.

Alerk was originally hired to run the store but had to be let go recently over a number of issues, including a lack of sufficient funding to justify the position, said

Arnasungaaq.

There was also some friction between a number of society committee members and Alerk.

"Our former store manager wasn't always in agreement with the committee and, in the opinion of some, not always that polite with its members, so that and increased difficulties with maintaining our revenues led to the recent termination of the position," said Arnasungaaq.

Her termination means the shop will now be run by volunteers.

"A lot of customers were using the thrift store before we ran into problems and it was closed a lot, then they stopped coming," he said. "I would to thank the people of Baker Lake for showing their support of the Abluqta Society and coming forward to help us.

"I hope the community has a good future with Abluqta going forward."

Plans to open food bank Abluqta member Silas Arngna'naaq said the society was helped tremendously by the meeting this past week.

The society hopes to open a food bank in the community.

Arngna'naaq said there are enough people in the community who share the society's view that Baker needs one.

Moving forward, he's quietly optimistic that day will come.

"The community also needs some kind of store for those who are less fortunate, so I think support for the Abluqta Society was always there, but we probably didn't have it co-ordinated properly," said Arngna'naaq.

"I'm not sure what the direction will

be at this point, in terms of a full-time food bank, but that is the direction I think most of the members who joined are thinking of taking.

"There could be some training offered for some of our new members, in terms of being members of a board of directors, but, other than that, most of the organization is set up pretty well.

"And, when you look at things like the sewing program held during the past year, the Abluqta Society has the potential to do a lot of positive things in the community."

Arngna'naaq said the society made a good decision in moving forward on a completely volunteer basis, at least until such a time its members feel ready to be able to work with a manager.

He said what he heard during this past week's meeting has him confident the society is now moving in the right direction.

The people who were there were very supportive, he said.

"It was a very upbeat meeting and the people who came and spoke out had a lot of new ideas about how we could tackle some of the problems that we ran into before," he said.

"I thank the people who came out to support the Abluqta Society and I hope we'll be able to help our people in the community a little more now," he continued. "With the support we received at the meeting, we now have a much brighter future to look forward to." bf l A ᖃᒪᓂ'ᑐᐊᕐᒥ m4WZz 9

Arviat teens embrace theatre 'I'm more comfortable just being me'

Sometimes art imitates life and sometimes it's the other way around.

But regardless of which is the recipient of the sincerest form of flattery, there are always lessons to be learned and emotions to be explored when it comes to the art of drama.

Longtime members of the Arviat Drama Club at John Arnalukjuak High School – Russell Suluk, Justin Suluk, Edith Issakiark and Lydia Kaviok – all say drama has affected them in one or more areas, sometimes on the stage and sometimes away.

Russell, 16, can honestly say he's been involved in theatre all his life, having actually been in the cast of an Arviat Easter play as a baby.

Russell said being involved in drama has helped him learn and appreciate new words and it has helped him in using his own lan-

guage of Inuktitut.

He said it has also helped his self-confidence and communication skills.

"My time in drama has definitely helped me in communicating with my friends and family," said Russell.

"It also helped me when I had to speak in public, especially when I was down south.

"My acting has also helped me get more in touch with my own feelings and being in the drama club helped me feel better about things in general.

"And it helped a little bit with my everyday confidence."

Issakiark, 16, said she has a good imagination and her time in the theatre helped fuel that imagination more than she expected.

She said her role as Sedna (Goddess of the Sea) in the play, Inuk and the Sun, pushed her to use her imagination while adapting her voice to, basically, two different characters.

"I had to use my voice in the play to portray that of the strongest woman and then later, when Sedna changes her appearance, I had to change it again to that of a beautiful lady," said Issakiark.

"I found projecting myself to be a very strong woman on stage to be fun, but really challenging.

"And being cast in that role for Inuk and the Sun was actually the first time I had ever heard that story about Sedna, so it was also something new about my culture I learned.

"I was a little shy before the theatre, but drama has helped me to be confident all the time and not be afraid of speaking up when I feel I should say something.

"Drama has given me the confidence to just be myself," said Issakiark.

Justin, 19, said the play Night gave him a better understanding of a family struggling with alcoholism.

He said it also taught him changing one's personality sounds a lot easier to do than it actually is.

"I was pretty young at the time and I was playing the role of a father who was an alcoholic," said Justin.

"That play was really interesting to me because I had to express myself a lot more and the character I was playing was a really violent guy, which I found very difficult at first.

"It gave me more insight about what life can be like in some families affected by alcoholism and I'm a pretty nice guy, so I found it very hard acting like that.

"I also had to act like I lost a wife in a Ski-Doo accident and it really helped my confidence to be able to portray emotions that strong."

Justin said many plays give you glimpses of other situations that the world has to offer.

He said his very first role in

Floating On A Don't Care Cloud gave him more of an insight into how the world is working in regards to so many teenagers smoking weed now, which he describes as a serious problem.

"There are a lot of things happening in the world right now and being involved with drama can make you more receptive to it all.

"A lot of what was happening in the play was also happening in my town and we were using the play to try and give people more awareness of it all.

"Both plays – Floating on a Don't Care Cloud and Night – help give you a better understanding of some of the issues being faced in the North right now.

"Night and when I played the

Grinch, also showed me just how hard it can be to change your personality or behaviour. Just because you want to, doesn't mean it's going to be easy."

Kaviok, 16, said her favourite character to play was Paris in Romeo and Juliet.

She said it was fun to play the role of a man.

"It was very challenging for me to portray a man," said Kaviok.

"I had to adjust my voice to try and sound like a man and it wasn't that easy.

"I also learned how to use a sword and have a sword fight in that play.

"That role has helped me be more expressive and, overall, I'm more comfortable just being me now than I ever was before I started acting."

A criticism of Nutrition North Northern News Services

To say I wasn't the least bit surprised to learn that all five major Inuit organizations – Inuit Tapiriit Kanatami, Nunavut Tunngavik Inc. (NTI), the Inuvialuit Regional Corp., Makivik Corp. and the Nunatsiavut Government – had pulled out of the federal government's Indigenous Working Group on food security this past April would be a major understatement.

Nor was I the least bit surprised to learn NTI president Natan Obed and NTI health policy analyst Shylah Elliott saw the working group and the rhetoric issued by Nutrition North Canada representatives, to be a waste of time and no more than tokenism and optics (read: window dressing) that would produce no positive results.

This has always been the federal government's approach to Nutrition North and it doesn't seem to matter Sanikiluaq which party is at the top of the pecking order.

Nutrition North has been one of the worst examples of 'we know what's best for you and you will accept it sooner or later', to have ever come down the pipe.

And, despite, a much more impressive title, it appears the modern version of the working group is no more believable or productive than the advisory committee that used to pay us all sporadic visits

The play was delivered in both Inuktitut and English, with theatre-lovers also receiving a holiday meal with their ticket purchase on Oct. 6.

Season Opener hockey camp marks start of new season

Almost 200 minor hockey aged players got their new season off to a riveting start at the annual Rankin Rock Season Opener hockey camp in Rankin Inlet from Oct. 14 to 19.

In addition to on-ice skill development, the Arctic Inspiration Prize-winning camp also features modules on literacy and personal growth, off-ice training, healthy eating and nutrition and player development.

The camp provides instruction to the minor hockey age groups of initiation, novice, atom, peewee, bantam and midget and features both male and female participation among both players and group leaders.

Camp developer and head on-ice instructor David Clark said the number of camp participants exceeded expectations this year, especially in the camp's two youngest age groups of initiation and novice.

He said the initiation group swelled to 30 players this year.

"I can honestly say that every kid has improved a little bit during the camp, but you notice it more in the younger groups of initiation and novice," he said. "We had kids who couldn't even skate on day one and they were taking part in all the drills by the end of the camp."

The camp also attracted a handful of kids come to the camp from other communities. They had to find their way to Rankin, but were not charged for participating.

"All together there were 20 of us instructing and running the camp,

with that number going up to 30 including literacy, cooking and everyone working at the camp this past week.

Each group had an hour lunch break at the community hall, with the meals being prepared by Kelly Clark-Lindell and her helpers.

Adriana Kusugak, Laura Merritt and Shanti Dias handled the literacy components, while Panniuq Karetak did an excellent job with off-ice training, said Clark.

The camp ran extremely smoothly and Clark said keeping the kids in the arena complex during lunchtime made a huge difference.

"The kids weren't going home and coming back, or hanging around the arena causing disturbances during lunch," he said. "They were pretty much kept busy all day from start to finish.

Clark said he always talks with the group leaders to get feedback on what they feel is working well and what can be improved upon.

He said he makes a number of tweaks to the camp every year so that it runs more efficiently.

Clark said he would be offering similar camps in a couple of other Kivalliq communities this year. He hopes to be running one in Baker Lake around the end of November when their ice is ready and another in Arviat during the first part of December.

Clark said the Season Opener camp is strictly a skills-development camp.

He said camp instructors do not teach systems or team approach to the game.
